STUDENT WALK OUT Josh

Never Again.

Hundreds of Brandeis students gathered around Chapels Pond at noon Wednesday to stand in solidarity with victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to express support for gun control reform. Attendees filed in along a narrow path and spread out around the heart-shaped pond. The crowd held a 17-minute moment of silence to signify the 17 lives lost in Parkland, FL exactly one month prior. At the start of each minute, Josh Moll ’19 read the name of a victim. The newly formed group, Brandeis Never Again, organized this event as part of the National School Walkout, joining thou-

sands of students across the country who walked out of class to demand legislative action on gun control. Brandeis Never Again began with two students, Renee Korgood ’20, and Sagie Tviezer ’19, who began contacting students at Brandeis, as well as the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, about possible actions to support gun control reform. The organization now has 12 main members with a listserv of about 40 people, according to Korgood, and is planning five upcoming events to support gun control and the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. National walkouts were scheduled for 10 a.m. on March 14, but Tuesday night, Brandeis announced that there would be a See NEVER AGAIN, page 4

Candidates run for Student Union in spring elections By Hannah Schuster, Emily Sorkin Smith and Celia Young editors

Students are running for seven positions on the Student Union in the first round of spring elections. This week, The Hoot interviewed the candidates for president, vice

president and junior representative to the Board of Trustees. Hannah Brown, President Hannah Brown ’19, this year’s Student Union Vice President, is running unopposed for president, having served on the Union since her first year at Brandeis. Brown was the North Quad senator her freshman year and served as chair

of the Dining Committee in the spring. During her sophomore year, she was a Class of 2019 senator as well as the Executive Senator and chair of the Services and Outreach Committee. Brown’s role as vice president involves holding office hours, attending e-board meetings and leading weekly Senate meetings. She also meets regularly with administrators and works on the

Union’s major initiatives. This year, Brown is also chair of the Union’s constitutional review committee. Over the past three years, Brown has been involved with projects like the Midnight Buffet, a large-scale Union tradition. She introduced vendor sponsorships that helped reduce the event’s cost and invited student performers to make the night more enjoyable.

Brown also helped organize the first spring shuttles to and from campus for April break last year and contributed two new Union bylaws: one establishing an international student senator an the other, the Senate Health and Safety Committee. Brown has created a three-part See UNION, page 3
