Statement
Statement
Dear Friends,
Once again, your generosity enabled a transformational year of growth and progress at the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art.
We entered a new phase of flood recovery with a major construction project to replace programming spaces we lost on the Museum’s ground floor in September 2021. First, we opened the beautiful new Waterview Room on the second floor of the Museum, which was created out of former office spaces. With its stunning views overlooking the Brandywine Creek, the space has since hosted dozens of educational programs, public and internal meetings, and special events, providing an invaluable indoor space for the return of the Critter Sale along with many of the types of programs and events hosted prior to the 2021 flood. A new and much-appreciated space is the ADA-accessible family restroom we opened near the Millstone Café, the first facility of its kind on the first floor of the Museum. In the second half of the year, we watched as the Museum’s beloved Courtyard was transformed into a more functional space. By the end of the fiscal year, construction was nearing completion, and plans were underway for an extraordinary event to introduce the new Courtyard to our members and other friends. This important renovation not only created the needed space for larger special events and programs, but it also provided improved accessibility with new level paving and a permanent ADA entrance ramp that would finally welcome ALL visitors in through the Museum’s front doors.
There was much excitement in our program areas as well. The year’s slate of special exhibitions included a broad range of artists and styles. Our Joseph Stella and Andrew Wyeth exhibitions both showcased two very different representations of vivid nature, while the diverse artists featured in our children’s illustration exhibition captured the enduring bonds of family and nature through their colorful works created across a variety of media. The year also included important additions to the collection along with the muchawaited opening of Jamie Wyeth: Unsettled, a Brandywine project five years in the making, which opened to rave reviews before traveling to four other venues across the United States. In addition to its exhibitions, the Museum continued to offer a wide range of inter-disciplinary educational programs throughout the year. From our Creative Escape workshops and stroller tours to our accessible sensory-friendly events and inspirational Imagine Brandywine art displays, our programs welcomed participants of all ages and backgrounds.
At the Conservancy, we launched the Brandywine Flood Study in partnership with Chester County Water Resources Authority and the University of Delaware's Water Resources Center. Led by the Conservancy and its partners, this major study will evaluate flooding along the Brandywine Creek in Pennsylvania and Delaware and looks to identify mitigation measures that can lessen the impact of future severe flooding events. With its important practical recommendations, this study dovetails perfectly with the Conservancy’s new Climate Resiliency Initiative which helps local municipalities and landowners proactively address climate change in their communities. We also continued our ongoing efforts to protect more open space, working with individual landowners to draft new easements and strengthen existing ones, and helping to improve those sites further by implementing best environmental management practices. And we worked with municipalities on important planning efforts to help guide future development within their jurisdictions. By year end, the total number of acres permanently protected by Conservancy efforts exceeded 70,000, further cementing our organization’s status as one of the leading land trusts in the country.
It was a busy and rewarding year, and we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the donors, government officials, sponsors, members, and volunteers whose unwavering dedication and support during that time made our work possible and to salute our Board of Trustees and staff for their hard work. Your generous contributions have made an incredible difference in our ability to further our mission. You are an essential part of our success.
Thank you,
Cuyler Walker

Brandywine Heritage Society
Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift. Such gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life income and lead trusts, gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts, and donations of a personal residence or farm with the retention of a life estate. Through their foresight and generosity, Brandywine Heritage Society members help ensure that vital works of art and irreplaceable land, water, and historic resources will be preserved and shared with generations to come.
