Dear Friends,

After a few challenging years navigating the pandemic and then the devastating flood of 2021, the last fiscal year saw the Brandywine launch exciting new initiatives and achieve some impressive milestones.

Starting off this fiscal year, we publicly kicked off an exciting new partnership with the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, through which our Museum is now managing their nearly 7,000-object Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection—the majority of which has never before been exhibited. Through stewarding this collection, the Brandywine will plan and develop new exhibitions, make works available for loan to other institutions, and foster new research and scholarship on the life and work of Andrew Wyeth—including producing the catalogue raisonné of the artist. As a first glimpse inside this significant treasure trove, we were delighted to present Andrew Wyeth: Home Places from February–July 2023, which was curated by our first Wyeth Foundation Curator and Director of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center, William L. Coleman, Ph.D.. This exhibition was the first of many more to come featuring works from this collection.

This fiscal year also marked the 50th anniversary of the Brandywine Railroad train display. A beloved holiday tradition in our region, the Railroad once again drew in children—and generations of former children—to marvel at its size and intricacy and contributed to the uptick in visitation that brought Museum attendance back to pre-pandemic levels.

Huge milestones were equally celebrated at the Conservancy, too, as we surpassed more than 500 total conservation easements held by the organization, while also exceeding 70,000 acres of land that have been permanently preserved through both direct and facilitated easements—an accomplishment with farreaching environmental benefits. We also launched a new Climate Resiliency Initiative to help local municipalities and landowners proactively address climate change in their communities; created an online “Brandywine Outside” storymap to better connect visitors with our campus trails; and hosted a series of virtual and in-person Native Plant “Pocket Garden" workshops designed to encourage our members and friends to introduce native plants into their own landscapes, no matter the size and scale of their growing spaces.

4 FY 2023 BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART

While we flourished operationally this fiscal year, we also continued our efforts to build back from the flood and resulting damage that was caused by Hurricane Ida in 2021. Thanks to donations from dear friends of our founder, George A. “Frolic” Weymouth, we were able to renovate the existing Weymouth office building that was damaged in the flood and reconfigure it to house additional administrative staff from across the organization. With this change, we also began the reconfiguration of former office spaces in the Museum to create a new multi-purpose room that will replace some of the functionality lost when the Museum’s ground-floor lecture room and classroom were irreparably damaged by the flood. More work throughout the Brandywine’s campus will continue into the years ahead in order to fully repair and protect the Museum and other campus buildings from the impact of severe weather events. Once complete, the Brandywine will be better prepared, protected and equipped to rebound from future severe flooding events, so that we can remain focused on our core mission and serving the public.

In short, it was a busy but fulfilling year—a time of forward movement that gave us reason to celebrate. While we’re grateful for a year of success, we’re especially grateful for the thousands of members and friends who made our work possible through their support and generosity. We couldn’t do it without them.

Best regards,

20 FY 2023 BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART

Brandywine Heritage Society

Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift. Such gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life income and lead trusts, gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts, and donations of a personal residence or farm with the retention of a life estate. Through their foresight and generosity, Brandywine Heritage Society members help ensure that vital works of art and irreplaceable land, water, and historic resources will be preserved and shared with generations to come.
