REGATTA TIME Enjoying lunch at Sylvan Beach. As this beautiful place that we are fortunate to call home is an island, it is only natural that we expect to see boats of all descriptions out on the water at any given time and included in the mix are always a few sailing vessels. On the weekend of the 27th and 28th of May those few sail powered and other classic vessels will become many during the 2017 Bribie Classic Boat Regatta which has been a project of the Bribie Island Yacht Club for the past thirteen years. Now in it’s nineteenth year, the Regatta was taken on by the then two year old yacht club after six years of being run by a private enterprise. This event is known to draw participants with both small and large craft from as far away as New South Wales and throughout Queensland.

Competing in the rowing race. Council through Division One Councillor, Brooke Savige who also provided the “show bags.”

The evening prior to the regatta will see entrants gather at the Bribie Island Hotel where they will receive their “Showbags” which will contain maps, other documents and items from sponsors. Local MP Rick Williams has generously helped out with printing requirements for the regatta.

After crews have satisfied their hunger at Toorbul, they will then bring their craft back down the passage and, those who are only there for the day will depart for home whilst the majority of other participants who have come for the two days will proceed to free moorings generously provided by the Pacific Harbour Marina where, from 3pm onward, vessels are able to be viewed by the public and the Vietnam Veterans Association will provide afternoon tea. In the evening crews will gather at the Bribie Island Hotel for a dinner where there will be a few competitions with prizes sponsored by Nautilus Marine Insurance who also provide the small participation plaque which they can attach to their boat.

Early on Saturday morning the keen boaties will gather at Spinnaker Sound Marina where they will be provided with breakfast by the Vietnam Veterans Association and then make the necessary preparations for a 10am departure out into Pumicestone Passage and a leisurely voyage up to Toorbul for a luncheon courtesy of the Bribie Island Yacht Club. This well catered for lunch is made possible due to funding by the Moreton Bay Regional

At about 10am on Sunday, the boats will depart the marina and, after spending time sailing around some of the canals, will then proceed to the area of Sylvan Beach between the VMR and the Bribie bridge. The public are welcome to attend this

I thought you might BERT WILL soldiers who saw service in Vietnam and, not long after his return to Australia in 1968, he visited his grandmother’s farm in Western Victoria. During that visit, he spent some time rummaging through a shed and this led to the discovery of a very bleached and weather beaten plaque which he instantly recognised as being an important part of his family history.

The plaque in memory of Bert’s Great Uncle. Vietnam Veteran, award winning rifleman and local real estate agent, Bert Bowden regards May 28th as a day of special significance and

remembrance for his family and he has a beautifully restored plaque which helps to explain why. Bert was one of our brave

Medals belonging to Bert’s father.

This 55cm high and 45cm wide plaque with gold lettering and a photo in the centre referred to Bert’s Great Uncle, William John Beasley who served in World War 1 and had been killed in action at Ploegstreet Wood in France on May 28th, 1917 at the age of twenty seven years and eleven months. It had been presented to his family by residents of the small Victorian town of Linga and, not prepared to let it deteriorate any further, Bert took it to a French polisher in Canberra who has been able to restore this beautiful memorial to Private Beasley. This soldier who sacrificed his life for his country is officially recognised on the Memorial Wall at VillersBretonneux and official

records hold witness accounts which show that he was listed as having “No Known Grave”. This is probably an indication that he was a victim of the terrible shelling attacks which resulted in bodies being torn to unrecognisable shreds. Despite enquiries regarding the whereabouts of his Great Uncle’s medals, Bert has been unable to find them. Bert Bowden’s family have a long history of military service and, as well as his Great Grandfather, Grandfather and StepGrandfather having fought in World War 1, his father saw service in World War II in both the Middle East and New Guinea. Bert’s son Craig has served in Timor and Afghanistan and has recently been deployed overseas again. Craig’s daughter Cindy served in Kuwait during the first Iraq war. As well as his twenty years as a regular soldier, Bert’s other claim to fame is his uncanny ability with a rifle. He has won many competitions in this field, both during and after his military service, and this is evidenced by the numerous

badges of recognition that are displayed on a wall in his home. Bert represented his country during the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada and his skill was rewarded with a gold medal.

Each year, Bert attends the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and, although this is often in Brisbane, he has also been present as the sun rises over the Kokoda Track on ANZAC Day and plans to travel to Europe next year. As the 100th year anniversary of his Great Uncle’s death approaches, Bert’s dedication to our fallen serves as a solemn reminder that we should never forget.

Entertainers of the Island

by Neil Wilson

COUNTRY LINKS of music is normally of a country origin and Janice told me that the favourites are songs by artists such as Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline. ‘Anything from country and country rock to rock a billy,’ Janice explained.

The Country Links band with Compere Janice Brown. The time has arrived for me to tell you about another group of very talented people who regularly entertain the local community and are well known by the name, Country Links. Consisting of a four piece band and their compere and founder, Janice Brown, Country Links perform on the second

Sunday of each month at the Bribie District All Age Activities Centre which most of know as the Golden Age Centre on Arcadia Street at Woorim. The band members are George Marshall on lead guitar, Mike Levonis on rhythm guitar, Dave Larkin on bass guitar and Mike Spence on the drums.

Country Links - Entertaining locals for over 10 years.

The band was first formed in September, 2006 and they initially played at the Bribie Island Golf Club where they entertained audiences until April 2007. Relocating to their current venue in May200, they have attracted an increasing number of fans as the years went by. ‘At first we probably had around thirty or forty at the concerts and now it is up to an average of eighty,’ said Janice. ‘They are mainly of an older age bracket although we occasionally see a few young ones there,’ she added. During the afternoon, there is a performance by a guest artist and there is also a walk up artist segment and this is open to anyone who wishes to take to the stage to perform two songs. From time to time a group of line dancers will make an appearance. The genre

Whilst Janice explained to me that she has never been a musician due to her mum refusing to buy her a guitar in case she got bored with it, she is no stranger to the stage having acted in shows at the West End Little Theatre Group in Brisbane many years ago since then she has taken on the role of compere on many occasions when it was needed. She became involved with country music on the island twenty five years ago and this on-going association is what led her to form Country Links. This popular group of entertainers actually has a sixth member although he is mainly found before and after the shows when he can be seen setting up and taking down the sound system and I’m talking about none other than Janice’s husband Terry. ‘I just do the hard work,’ Terry told me with a bit of a grin on his face. The Country Links concerts begin at 12.30pm and finish about 4.30pm and admission is six dollars with anyone under sixteen admitted free. There is always a lucky door prize and a raffle is held during the afternoon. If you would like to find out more about this popular afternoon of entertainment, you can phone Janice Brown on 0403 481943.

SONG AND DANCE AT THE VIBE MARKETS

| 7

by Neil Wilson

As a venue that is very quickly gaining a reputation for being the best place to be on the last Sunday morning of each month, the Vibe Markets at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive will certainly live up to that reputation on May 28th. As well as the various stalls where patrons are able to purchase fresh produce and hand crafted items, this month the markets will feature displays by the Le Step Dance School and also a performance by the local ukulele players. The dance school, which is based on the Redcliffe Peninsula, will give demonstrations of modern jive to music from all eras and will be performing on the patio stage from 9.30am until 10.30am.

Getting in step at the Le Step Dance School. If market goers take a stroll down to the Woodcrafters shed at around 11.30am, they will be treated to the melodic string delights of the ukulele players while they

take in the truly amazing talents of the Woodies. If you haven’t yet visited the Vibe Markets, perhaps Sunday 28th May can be the ideal opportunity to

check them out. No one that I know has ever been disappointed by what these markets have to offer.

A REALLY HARD SEVEN DAYS

by Neil Wilson

fever, foul breath, head colds and bronchial irritations and a warning at the bottom of the label advised that the product was not suitable for children under six years old. HOW TIMES and OPINIONS HAVE CHANGED!!

There can be absolutely no doubt that the incredible advancements in medical science have not only resulted in the cure of previously untreatable diseases but also in an almost complete reversal of ideas regarding the effects of certain substances on the human organs. In the earlier part of the last century, there was a product on the market which proudly displayed the name, Dr Batty’s Asthma Cigarettes and claimed to be “For Your Health.” The list of ailments that Dr Batty believed could be cured by his product included asthma, hay

I took up smoking in 1965 at a time when the majority of the population regarded this as a perfectly normal part of life. Over the years and as opinions about whether smoking was detrimental to one’s health began to change, I never even thought about either wanting or, for that matter, having to quit for health reasons. I have always been what is regarded as a heavy smoker and, to be completely honest, never smoked a cigarette that I did not enjoy. I always said that if I ever stopped enjoying cigarettes, I would then consider giving up smoking. I have no real answer as to why, but in the latter part of last year, I made enquiries with my doctor about what he would recommend that may assist me to quit this habit that had been my companion for a number of decades. This resulted in

an almost successful three month attempt that cut my daily intake down to three or four cigarettes each day. I feel that if the course of medication had been allowed for an extra month I would probably have smoked my last cigarette in December. However, as this was not the case and for some reason, I found a mysterious motivation within me to try again, as soon as government regulations allowed me to be prescribed another three month course of Champix, I once again began an attempt to be a non-smoker. Champix are sold in the form of a tablet and contain the drug Varenicline Tartrate which apparently works to fool the receptors in the brain that tell us how good nicotine makes us feel. Although the instructions recommend that it is best to set a date on which we are going to stop smoking, different methods apply to different people and I chose a completely opposite approach to the task. I did not set a particular date and so, whilst I was committed to this attempt I probably relied more on the Champix than on my own willpower. After about the fourth week, I realised that I had more than halved my daily intake and, right at the end of the sixth week (half way through

the course) I smoked my last cigarette. I am writing this article on what is the eighth day without a cigarette and I have to admit, the past seven days have been some of the hardest days of my life. Some say that the best way to succeed when quitting is to get rid of anything that reminds you of smoking but as I am a great believer in the age old adage, “You always want what you don’t have”, I still have the remainder of the packet of cigarettes that I had on the day I stopped and I have lost count of the amount of times I have put a cigarette in my mouth and then returned it to the packet without lighting it. In my opinion this has served to help me by proving that I can resist the temptation. With another five weeks of the Champix course still to go and noticing the positive changes that I believe are the result of quitting, (sleeping better, breathing easier and definitely having more money to spare) I do feel reasonably confident about being successful and, whilst I will never be the one to preach to or condemn anyone who is a smoker, I certainly would recommend this lifestyle change as worthwhile. I am now a non-smoker. I am no longer addicted.

UNIQUE FASHION FROM CAMBODIA

by Neil Wilson

Europe and Australia. After five years of going from strength to strength, TONLE found strong acceptance in Rachel’s home country and that is now arguably the brand’s most lucrative market. The brand is marketed as “Zero Waste Fashion” and describes the product as being “clothes that are as unique as the people who make them.” There is so much emphasis placed on the zero waste policy that even the labels in the clothing items are made from material scraps.

On display in a section of First Avenue business, The Inner Room, is a selection of dresses and other women’s fashion items that bear the largely unheard of label, “TONLE” and the story behind this brand of clothing is one that I believe should definitely be told. The idea for the brand was first conceived by American student Rachel Faller who had travelled to Cambodia on a Fulbright Scholarship, the largest educational exchange program in the world. During her travels in what is known to be the poorest country in Asia, Rachel, who grew up in Boston in The United States, discovered many instances where offcuts from the mass

clothing manufacturers were being disposed of as waste and this resulted in her motivation to find a way of turning this undesirable situation into a way in which the local people could boost their economy. The young entrepreneur began reclaiming the discarded materials and in 2009, after organising a spacious and airy room at a suitable premises, set up a number of sewing machines to be used by locals who she taught to sew. As the Founder, CEO and Creative Director of TONLE, Rachel first began selling the TONLE brand to boutiques throughout Cambodia and before long found a demand for her creations in both

As someone who strives to provide the absolute best working conditions for the employees of her business, Rachel makes certain that conditions at the workplace are ideal and that each of the workers receive a good income from their efforts. The Inner Room co-owners Paula Sharam and Paula Winch have visited the premises of TONLE in Phnom Penh and Paula Winch told me that to see just how happy the workers were was proof that Rachel’s idea of being able to improve a few peoples lifestyles by providing well paid employment has certainly been successful. The TONLE stock that is on

A tonle creation. display at The Inner Room, one of only two Australian outlets, is currently being sold at cost and Paula explained to me that whilst the brand’s creations do not suit all ages, they have certainly received approval from younger customers. In an era in which the clothing industry is regarded as being responsible for creating the greatest waste in the world, the example set by TONLE and the retailers who stock their product is one that must be applauded and also encouraged world wide.

KINNAREE THAI RESTAURANT

Jungle Curry This is a little haven for you food lovers if you like asian/ Thai style food. Even if you have not tried this type of food I suggest you do, as I have eaten most types of food and been to most of the different types of restaurants there are and this restaurant in particular is one of my favourites. Pritchit the head chef told me that there was only a couple of telephone bookings for the evening, yet

The team at Kinnaree Thai Restaurant are all hands on deck. the restaurant was packed. That in itself tells a story! Phone to reserve your table to avoid disappointment. For starters we ordered the soft shell crab bao, seared scallops, petite chicken satay and Kinnaree duck pancakes. The starters were absolutely delicious and highly recommended to tantalise the taste buds, remember the food is cooked to your taste of spice, if any.

Rice Vermicelli With Spicy Pork

For the main course we ordered a jungle curry, crispy pork belly with steamed gai lan, beef with fresh chilli, garlic and basil, a bowl of fresh steamed rice and a very unusual cold dish which was the prawn egg net salad, very tasty. All in all the food was amazing, the atmosphere was great, the service was even better and everyone I had a chat with could not fault the dining experience

along with the fresh fragrance Thai cuisine that this restaurant offers. We will be back for another meal very soon, thanks again to the owners Chris and Pritchet and all the staff for such a wonderful experience. Welcome to the Kinnaree Thai restaurant situated at 1B/37 Benabrow Avenue, Bribie island. 3408 6555.

FROM THE OFFICE OF BROOKE SAVIGE

Welcome to another month of the ‘mini’. It has been a busy few weeks for Council with works being undertaken near Aldi to install a much needed pedestrian crossing. Additionally drainage infrastructure is being replaced throughout Bellara. The exercise equipment at both Woorim and Donnybrook are getting a lot of use and the park upgrade at Woorim near the old Koolamara site looks great.

Shortly, works will begin on the active transport project along Benabrow Ave. Some of this work will be carried out as night work but there will be work undertaken during the day as well. I ask residents to drive to conditions during the construction phase and follow all traffic directions. Thank you in advance for your patience during this time.

LOCAL SUPPORT FOR DEBBIE VICTIMS

by Neil Wilson

When cyclone Debbie and the resulting floods wreaked havoc throughout parts of the East coast recently, as is always the case in these situations, many people lost not only their homes but also most if not all of their possessions. Whilst the government does provide a large amount of financial assistance to victims, sadly it is usually never enough and many are forced to go without. Being very much aware of this situation and having

had a considerable amount of fund raising experience, on Sunday 7th May Bribie Island locals Barbara Butt and Geoff Franz invited people to have breakfast at Scoopys and, as well as the chance to win a prize in one of the raffles, those who came were also able to make a donation to help the cyclone victims. For the past twelve years, Barbara and Geoff have held fund raising breakfasts to raise money for causes such as World Vision and

the Red Cross, the first nine of which were held on the foreshore and involved Barbara cooking up a large pot of mince that she would then take down to the breakfast venue and those who came were able to enjoy a breakfast of mince on toast. ‘The cooking was starting to become a bit too much at my age,’ Barbara told me. ‘The last three years we have been holding the fund raisers at Scoopys. People can either buy a full breakfast or just have some

toast and a cuppa,’ she added. The breakfast in aid of cyclone Debbie victims resulted in an attendance of seventy people and Barbara was able to raise a total of $1,125 which will now be donated to the Red Cross and passed on to those who need it. Once again, this is a classic example of how members of our local community are always quick to offer their help to others when it is needed.

DON’T BECOME ONE OF THE 2,000

by Neil Wilson

Statistics tell us that there are approximately 2,000 skin cancer related deaths in Australia each year and along with that, Queensland has earned itself the unenviable title of Skin Cancer Capital of the World. ‘Eighty percent of all reported cancers are skin cancers,’ Chrissie Norton of Bribie Island Skin Cancer Clinic informed me. ‘In this region, from 2010 to 2014, there were 93 deaths that were caused from skin cancer’ she said. When we are told statistics such as these, it becomes quite easy to understand why Chrissie and her husband, Dr Peter Norton made the decision to open the Bribie Island Skin Cancer Clinic thirteen years ago. ‘There is quite a large number of retirees on the island and many of them have either worked in the outdoors or are keen on outdoor recreational activities such as fishing,’ Chrissie explained. ‘These are all factors that increase the risk of skin cancer so it is essential that people have access to a local clinic where they can be examined by trained professionals and receive the appropriate treatment if it is needed. A lot of the Bribie residents don’t wish to have to go off the island for treatment,’ she added.

Since it opened, the Bribie Island Skin Cancer Clinic has become a very well known and respected treatment centre and as evidence of just how essential it is to the local community, the clinic has an incredible 19,310 patients on the books. Chrissie told me that they currently treat about seven hundred skin cancers each month and all treatments at the clinic are able to be bulk billed.. Doctor Peter Norton is respected and highly praised by all who know him and the clinic often treats patients who have been referred there due to the clinic’s excellent reputation. The doctors at the clinic have received specialist training in skin cancer treatment at The Australian College of Skin Cancer Medicine and Dr Cassandra Faris, who has recently joined the other three doctors at the clinic, is studying for her Masters Degree at the University of Queensland. I often hear someone pass off the need to be regularly examined for signs of skin cancer as a waste of their time but, I would rather waste a bit of time than become a statistic on the list of avoidable deaths. I really believe that we are fortunate to have the convenience of a local skin cancer clinic staffed by professionals such as Doctor Norton and the team.

BRIBIE ISLAND BUTTERFLY HOUSE Meet the volunteers

by Neil Wilson

ANGELA BLINCO

Even before she began to volunteer, Angela knew a little about butterflies due to having operated a small breeding program at home. As a busy mum of two and a volunteer, one would have to think that this extremely dedicated bundle of energy has no time left to take on any other community tasks, but apparently she also takes the time to visit schools and kindergartens to give educational talks about the butterflies and their transformation from an egg through to the beautiful final result.

Marketing Manager Angela Blinco with Butterfly House founder, Ray Archer. During the previous few months, I have written a number of articles about the Bribie Island Butterfly House and it’s relocation to the great new premises on First Avenue at Bongaree, and in these articles I have made mention of the dedication of the volunteers who have helped to make founder Ray Archer’s dream a reality. However, whilst I have at times included the names

of some of the volunteers, it has only been a brief mention. As it is my belief that all of these community minded people who give freely of their time at the Butterfly House should be properly recognised for their efforts, in this and future issues of The Mini Bribie Islander I will be presenting the story of each of these wonderful volunteers, one by one.

The very first volunteer in the series is none other than long time volunteer and Butterfly House Marketing Manager, Angela Blinco. As someone who has been on board since Ray and Delphine commenced the original Butterfly House in Pheasant Avenue at Banksia Beach about four years ago, Angela’s love and understanding of butterflies has grown with the project.

Ray Archer told me that he always leaves off the “A” on the end of Angela’s name so he can call her Angel. ‘I think that Angel really suits her,’ said Ray. ‘She is a quiet achiever and a really valuable asset,’ he added. Obviously someone who believes in keeping fit, Angela also spends time training at the gym and in kickboxing. From my personal perspective, I have to extend my sincere thanks to our first volunteer in the series for taking the time to provide me with all the information that I needed to tell the story of the Bribie Island Butterfly House.

SECURITY AND VIGILANCE A MUST

by Neil Wilson

Since just prior to the Easter weekend, a Bongaree couple ensure that every door and window is securely locked whether they are home or not. Being of the need to take these precautions is the result of an extremely brazen burglary on the Saturday evening before Easter.

The absolutely astounded resident explained that at some time during the evening, and most likely whilst he was sitting just two metres away in the lounge, the thieves slid open the rear door of the canal home and stole an i Pad, two mobile phones and both of the couple’s wallets, getting away with goods that

have an estimated value of approximately $900. The theft was not discovered until the following morning and, because of this, the couple were forced to postpone their planned afternoon departure on a caravanning holiday. The wallets were both found in the canal days later and some of the cards were

located near Wright’s Fruit Barn. ‘To do something such as this they mustn’t have any fear,’ the resident said. ‘The police told us that they think they know who was responsible and they were able to lift a couple of really clear fingerprints from the door so I hope that this results in the thieves being caught,’ he added.

NEXT CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY ON ACCESS AND INCLUSION IN MORETON BAY Moreton Bay Regional Council is encouraging residents to get involved and have their say in the next stage of community consultation for the development of council’s very first ‘Disability Access and Inclusion Plan’. Once finalised, the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan will clearly set out council’s strategic approach to bettering access in the region for the very first time, exploring practical ways to continue to improve the accessibility of council’s infrastructure, services and information moving forward. Council’s Lifestyle and Amenity Spokesperson, Councillor Matt Constance encouraged residents to get involved in the second stage of community consultation by registering for one of seven free focus groups being held across the region from 22 May - 8 June 2017 or participating in council’s online survey which had

“We’re committed to ensuring residents of all abilities are able to enjoy a vibrant lifestyle full of opportunities within the Moreton Bay Region, with equal access to council’s services and infrastructure,” Cr Constance said.

“Importantly, this exercise isn’t just about focusing on the experiences of residents with physical disabilities, but council would also like to hear from residents or carers of persons with non-physical disabilities as well, so that we can ensure our plan is as diverse as possible and delivers long-lasting benefits for our entire community.”

“The drafting of council’s inaugural Disability Access and Inclusion Plan will allow us to take a good look at the services, infrastructure and information council has in place now, and identify what actions we can take moving forward to improve accessibility and inclusiveness for residents of all abilities in our region.

Councillor for Division 7, Denise Sims, who is part of the internal council committee spearheading the development of the Disability Access and Inclusion frameworks, said she encouraged residents to register for a focus group in their community, or share their feedback via council’s online survey.

“To help inform the Plan, we want to understand the needs and issues most important to the Moreton Bay community when it comes to access and inclusion.

“We’re encouraging as many residents as possible to get involved in the second stage of community consultation and help shape the drafting of council’s first Disability Access and Inclusion Plan,” Cr Sims said.

been extended until 5pm, Wednesday 31 May 2017.

“We particularly want to hear from residents with disabilities - including both physical and non-physical disabilities - in addition to their friends, family and carers, health care professionals and disability organisations. “You can get involved by taking part in council’s online survey or registering for one of seven free focus groups which will be held throughout May and June in Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Bunya, North Lakes, Lawnton, Bribie Island and Caboolture. “We want to ensure the Moreton Bay Region is a great place to live, work and play for residents of all abilities. I look forward to delivering this plan and seeing it in action for our community.”

Mini Masterpiece Curator Kate Goulding and fellow BICAS volunteer Bev Porter with the blank mini canvasses for the exhibition Just as we at The Mini Bribie Islander believe that good things can come in small packages, it seems that

those in the art world hold a very similar opinion and, as a way of demonstrating the truth of this old adage,

Now in it’s second year, this exhibition is run as a fundraiser for the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre and has now become a regular feature at the centre. Leading up to the exhibition which will be on display from May 29th to June 11th in the Mathew Flinders Gallery, artists of all mediums wishing to produce their own mini masterpiece are able to purchase a blank mini canvas from the centre for only five dollars. On the final day of the exhibition, all works that were entered will be auctioned and proceeds put

toward improvements at the gallery. Those wishing to take part in the auction but are unable to attend on the day can bid in a concurrent silent auction by registering their bid at the front desk of the centre. B.I.K.E.S. PROVIDING AN IMPORTANT SERVICE

Whilst it would be quite natural for anyone to associate the word bikes with a two wheeled contraption that is either pedal powered or propelled by means of an engine, the letters that go together to form the word actually are the initials for an organisation which provides a very important service to local students.

Bribie Island Kids Education Support has been active on the island for over six years and their aim is to assist children in our community by providing equipment that they need for their education which their families are unable to afford and therefore preventing them from being at a disadvantage.

The organisation works closely with the Chaplaincy and is actually a special works section of St Vincent De Paul. ‘We are an organisation that relies completely on donations from within the community and are fortunate that we receive help from many groups such as Rotary, Lions, BIDCA and the Vietnam Veterans,’ said B.I.K.E.S.co-founder and spokesperson Jon Wood. ‘All these groups make sure that their donations are used locally,’ he added. ‘We hold one fundraiser each year and that is the ‘Kids at Risk” Charity Golf Day at the Bribie Island Golf Club. The day is generously sponsored by REMAX and is a great day for all with a charity action and raffles available,’ Jon told me. ‘Last year, the event attracted 132

entrants and provided much needed funds. Because we provide support in various ways when it is needed, some of it becomes quite expensive and last year alone, we spent $27,000 on items like school fees, computer hire and other essentials,’ he explained. The REMAX “Kids at Risk” Charity Golf Day this year will be held on Sunday 11th June and anyone wishing to enquire about booking should phone the Bribie Island Golf Club on 3408 1457 or email them at office@bribiegolf.com. au for details. Making sure that our young receive a sound education without any disadvantages is absolutely essential and this community is fortunate to have an organisation such as BIKES to provide support to those who most need it.

GREAT FUN ON GRAVEL ROADS

by Neil Wilson

‘I will be very happy if I don’t see a gravel road for another year,’ are the words that local business owner and well known Bribie Island identity, Lulu Drew posted on her Facebook page after completing the 2017 Variety Club Brats bash at the beginning of May. No stranger to the Variety Club Bash, Lulu’s first experience with the Variety Club was in 2008 when she completed the Toowoomba to Bathurst bash and then the Townsville to Alice Springs run in 2009. As well as the annual long distance bash, the Variety Club commenced a yearly mini bash in 2010 and the

intrepid Lulu was unable to resist the urge to be involved. Using a different Mobile Party Shop van each time Lulu entered the inaugural Brats Bash and followed up again in 2011. Sadly, her plans to be in the 2012 Bash were thwarted due to the fire which destroyed her business. ‘This is the first year since the fire that I have been able to spare the necessary funds to go,’ Lulu told me. The Brats Bash is held over a long weekend and is usually over a course that is much better negotiated with a four wheel drive vehicle but, with a few variations, is able to be driven in a vehicle without this capacity. ‘They did fourteen creek crossings in the four wheel drive this year,’ said Lulu. ‘I just drove on the gravel roads and at times, it was so rough that the dash was rattling and vibrating and I think the van might have a few extra squeaks now,’ she explained. The Variety Club is a charitable organisation that believes in the notion that all children deserve

the same opportunities in life and, known as “The Children’s Charity” works hard to support children and families who are facing many challenges through sickness, disadvantage or living with a disability. Their never ending work assists in allowing children to gain mobility and freedom and to get out and about in the community The club endeavours to promote increased communication, the achievement of independence, increased self-esteem and where possible, provides assistance to help them integrate into mainstream schools and activities. Lulu told me that the 2017 Brats Bash, which covered a route from Yatala through to Warwick and Killarney and involved entrants spending two nights at the Cherrabah Resort before finishing at

Rosewood, was successful in raising almost $25,000 to purchase a special computer which will allow a little girl to communicate with her mother. This rather amazing computer is designed in a way that, when this girl, who is unable to talk, looks intently at the screen, a laser detects what she is looking at and converts this into words. I’m sure that it would not come as a surprise to anyone that Lulu is already talking about entering the Brats Bash in 2018 and, never one to resist an even bigger challenge, she is keen to be driving a four wheel drive this time. On behalf of the team at this publication and the rest of the community, well done Lulu and good luck for next year.

THE DAY OF THE DRONES

by Neil Wilson

the shape of a helicopter which still is categorised as a drone and I am told that the price tag for this beauty is $100,000. I must admit that it was quite easy to see why the chopper was so costly as it demonstrated the abilities that one would normally associate with the real thing.

Just about every occupation, invention, disease and worthwhile cause now has a specific day each year which is dedicated to promoting awareness and celebrating achievements to date. That being the case, it

should come as no surprise that there is a day which is dedicated to the relatively new hobby of drone flying. Yes, that’s right, International Drone Day was celebrated this year on May 6th

and over one hundred drone owners and pilots participated in the local event which was held at the Model Aircraft Association of Australia field on McGraths Road in Caboolture. Now in it’s third year, International Drone Day is celebrated by hobbyists all over the world and local organiser of the South East Queensland Team Jessica Culley told me that, due to the time zones, Australian teams will be flying before those in other parts of the globe. ‘There are 180 teams worldwide so this means that about 90,000 people will be flying drones today,’ Jessica explained. ‘There are three other teams in Australia and these are in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney,’ she said. As the day got underway, drones of all sizes and capabilities began to take to the skies and owners proudly displayed just what their pride and joy could do under their guiding hand. Whilst there are drones to suit everyone from beginners to the very experienced, they also vary in price and there are some that are used in commercial applications such as aerial photography. Another name for a drone is Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and, whilst most drones at the field on the day were relatively small, there was a much larger example in

Several businesses that are involved in selling drones and the necessary parts and accessories were at the field on the day and these included Hobbyrama, Scout Aerial and Impulse RC. To keep all who attended happily fed, the Bribie Island Lions Club were there with their famous BBQ stall Obviously, as with other similar hobbies, safety is the key to successful enjoyment and there are certain rules that need to be observed as a drone operator. Some of these rules are set down by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and there are a few that are more a matter of common sense. As well as operating a drone as a hobby some owners have began to use their drone in a commercial application and, if this is the case, it is necessary for them to pass a five day CASA course in which they are taught about safe operation and how to read charts. Jessica told me that she is a licensed commercial operator and uses her drone in real estate photography as well as to produce photos for postcards. Anyone who would like to find out more about this rather exciting hobby should go to the Facebook page which is DJI Owners of Australia Group. ‘As an indication of how drone flying has literally Taken Off, the Facebook group has about 7,000 members,’ Jessica told me.

With bears and snakes and ‘gaters, let the Yankee fun begin, the fishing’s great, the camping’s fun, and sport is played to win. Remember that in Memphis,King Elvis rules the day, and Dolly-wood is doing well, down Smokey Mountain way. Then of course there’s La La Land, where movies rule the day, and gambling’s great at Vegas, that’s all I’d like to say, Except to thank America, for all it’s been to me. I love the flag, I love this place, and I’ll be back, you’ll see!

the community voice

To make Australia great again, we need to get back to an Australia before the dole and drugs, we need to stop girls and women thinking they will receive money to have a baby. We need to make manners an actual subject in the schools, and when they leave High School, we need to send both boys and girls to the Armed Services for 12 months , during which they will get a chance to train in some given industry, if they like this life , then they can sign up to stay in. Going back to my first point,-the dole, all that receive it, need to be made to work for it, with employers signing that they actually turn up also they could be picked up with free buses and made to do road-works and again have it signed by the driver that they actually turn up, this would save the council money if they used dole-receivers, and disability people (providing they are not genuinely too sick to work).2nd.point: drugs, we should be building rehab. centres , where drug-people are forced to go to get off this expensive, backward step to our country , even Domestic Violence would be solved if perpetrators were jailed to teach them a lesson and their families would get a much-needed rest from their disruptive behaviour.point 3: Before this new thinking, if a daughter or anyone had a baby , their families supported them or they managed somehow, also the same with Child-care , if you wanted to work you paid for your children to be baby-sat, you didn’t expect the government to pay for it. Lastly, there should be special jails way out in the desert for peodophiles, no parole ever and a life sentence meaning actual life for murder. Lurline Thomson, Bongaree Dear Editor, Today, Thursday 4th may 2017, is a day Bill Peacock and I will remember for a long time after spending two nights in Brisbane to enable Bill a visit to the Brisbane dental hospital. We caught the Caboolture train home from the City. We then waited at Caboolture railway station for the bus to Bribie, got on the bus and settled for our trip home. We got to the roundabout near Rudds Crash Repairs and Bill’s chair toppled over flinging him to the ground on the opposite side of the bus. Some 8 hours later we were released from Caboolture hospital, I would like to personally thank everyone who was delayed by this event, especially the young couple closest to us, where the young lady held Bill’s hand while I got onto 000. Everyone of the young people who were asked for assistance to remove Bill from the bus “THANK YOU”. If you see us around Bribie come up and say hi so we can personally thank you. Thanks again to everyone involved, William Sheehan, Bill’s Carer. Dear Editor, Thanks for another enjoyable read, even if it was too late for the CCQ Mindfulness seminar. When I first came to Queensland, I was struck by the way that Queenslanders are full of complaints, but the average person was unwilling to raise a finger to do anything about them. Certainly it is reasonable to write to the local paper(s), but one needs to also write to the appropriate authority, if one wants anything done. I have saved myself about $140 over the last year or so on sewerage charges, because I wrote to Unity Water as well as the paper.

And similarly, with Charlie’s knowledge of computers, he could easily save himself from endless ads and repeats on TV, by taking the trouble to buy a hard-disk drive. This a great way to record the shows you want, so you can fast-forward through the ads and promos, and enjoy the movies almost as released. SBS has some great stuff which can teach one a lot, as well as entertaining. And if one watches things like Q & A, one can also pause the speakers long enough to read the tweets, some of which are very clever. H.Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Mr Wilson, I read with interest your story on Garry Cooper, his career and the planes he has flown. In May 2012, I was lucky enough to have a flight in the Cessna Bird Dog. This was a flight that I won during a special night at the Caboolture Warplane Museum and, being seventy five years of age at the time, it was a marvellous thrill. Garry flew me all over Bribie and it was awesome to see our island by flying over it. I have some great mementos of the pre-flight video and photos that I took in the air and your article in the last issue of The Mini Bribie Islander brought back some great memories. Thank you for a wonderful article on a wonderful man with whom it was a great pleasure to meet in person. Mrs Patricia Squire, Bongaree Dear Editor, To make Australia great again, we need to get back to an Australia before the dole and drugs, we need to stop girls and women thinking they will receive money to have a baby. We need to make manners an actual subject in the schools, and when they leave High School, we need to send both boys and girls to the Armed Services for 12 months, during which they will get a chance to train in some given industry.
