YOUR GARDEN IS YOUR FRIEND IN WINTER
by Neil Wilson
SADLY, during winter, there are some people who regard their garden in an equivalent way to that of an unheated swimming pool and completely ignore it until spring arrives. Winter is a great time for growing a range of garden favourites that extends from perennials
to potatoes and the absolute best time to grow herbs as during summer there are some that go to seed very quickly. As we approach the middle of our winter, now is the perfect time to be preparing beds and ensuring that they contain a good amount of organic matter prior to planting. July and August are not only a good time to plant roses but also the ideal time to prune existing rose bushes back by about one third, making absolutely sure that you remove any dead wood and also pick up any diseased leaves from around the area. If you are thinking about planting a tree or two, there are a few varieties that would be suited to being

started in the next month or two and another ideal plant for this time of year is aloe and if it is planted along with perennials it will certainly add an amount of structure to your garden. For something else that will add a lot of colour to the garden, try planting nasturtions and, as well as providing a beautiful array of colour, you can use the flowers and leaves in salads. The one sure fact that every experienced gardener knows is that by planting during the cooler months, it allows the seedlings time to settle in before the heat. Whilst the variety of plants that will thrive if started during July and August is far too numerous for me to list on this page, the following will provide some idea of the
preferred options. As well as roses, grevilleas, violets and salvias, there are many suitable types of vegetables that are worth considering and these include cabbage, peas, leeks capsicums, onions and tomatoes. Also on the list are silverbeet, zucchinis, lettuce beetroot, pumpkin and climbing beans. Some of the above varieties are ideal for sowing directly into the ground and others are more suited to being started in seed trays. If you are uncertain about which of these options are most suitable for growing your chosen plants, it is always best to consult the staff at your local nursery or garden centre for the answer. Happy winter gardening readers.

PHOTOGRAPHY - HOW IT WAS AND HOW IT IS NOW
THE old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” has never been more relevant than when it comes to thinking about how hard, no, in fact how almost impossible it would be to enjoy reading a newspaper or magazine if there were not any photos to accompany the written content. Along with that, it is also hard to comprehend how difficult that the original methods of taking a photo were when compared to the, “anyone can do it,” photography that we have become used to in the modern world of the twenty first century. Although the two basic principles for capturing an image, (darkened or obscure room and the fact that some substances are altered by light) had been known for some time, in fact Angelo Sala demonstrated that powdered silver nitrate is blackened by the sun way back in 1614, it was not until Thomas Wedgwood made the first documented though unsuccessful attempt around the year 1800 that the potential of
the method was realised. Wedgwood’s experiment was the catalyst for others to try the procedure and in the mid 1920’s, Nicephore Niepce did succeed but exposure took a few days and the finished results were extremely crude. It was not until Louis Daguerre developed the Daguerreotype method, the very first publicly announced and commercially viable process, that the real potential of photography was realised. Daguerre’s process was introduced in 1839 and this is recognised as the birth year of photography. The Daguerreotype system was metal based and, as opposed to the lengthy process tried by Niepce, only required minutes of exposure and remained the most common commercial process until it was superseded by the collodion process in the 1850s. As one would expect, there were soon others experimenting with photography and one of
these was William Henry Fox Talbot who invented the calotype negative and salt print processes in 1940. As opposed to the Daguerreotype method which meant images could only be copied by rephotographing, a calotype negative was able to be used to make a large quantity of prints. Another well received feature of the calotype was that the images lacked fine clarity due to it’s translucent paper negative and this made it popular for portrait photography because it softened the appearance of the human face. The Daguerreotype did however prove popular due to the demand for portraiture emerging during the industrial revolution. As the demand could not be met by oil painting, it most certainly added to the development of photography. It seems that during the development of photography in the nineteenth century, there were a number of methods tried, some more popular than others and
photographers began to discover how useful a camera was in recording events and even making a record of various landscapes and architecture. This is evidenced by Roger Fenton’s Crimean war picture and Robert Macpherson’s range of photographs depicting Rome and the interior of the Vatican. After a series of refinements and improvements in the photography process, Georgwe Eastman developed dry gel on paper which replaced the photographic plate and therefore eliminated the need for photographers to carry boxes of plates and toxic chemicals. In July 1988, Eastman’s Kodak camera was introduced to the market along with the slogan, “You press the button, we do the rest.” This innovation meant that virtually anyone could take a photo and leave the complicated part of the procedure to others and the introduction of the Kodak Brownie in 1901 resulted in

like to know The first widely used method of colour photography was the Autochrome plate which was invented by brothers Auguste and Luis Lumiere in the 1890’s and introduced commercially in 1907. Competing screen plates soon appeared and film based versions were eventually made but all of these were expensive and none of these were fast enough for hand held snapshots until the 1930’s. In 1935, Kodachrome film was introduced which paved the way for 16mm home movies and 35mm slides.

There have been countless advancements over the years with regard to the way newspapers and magazines are prepared but I honestly feel that improvement in methods of capturing images has got to be one of the most worthwhile.
On a personal note, I can remember how very different the procedure was for newspaper photography in the 1980’s compared to how it is accomplished now. When I first worked in the print media industry, the photographer used a reasonably bulky camera and, after taking a series of photos, had to spend time in the darkroom developing and printing the images. These were then scanned into the

THE BRIBIE UKULELE STRUMMERS the Locals Only afternoons which are held at the Blue Pacific Hotel. They can also be heard each year at the “Blessing of the Surf” ceremony at Woorim and take it upon themselves to put on a performance in various parks around the island from time to time.
The Bribie Ukulele Strummers are all ready to play. WHEN local entertainer and music teacher Keith Haigh was asked to give ukulele lessons about six years age, it became the catalyst for the formation of The Bribie Ukulele Strummers, a group which is made up of strummers who have all been taught by Keith. The number of group members has varied since commencement and, whilst at one stage there were fifteen strummers, there are currently only four and Keith
informed me that the reason for the variation in numbers is that people have either moved away from the area or in some instances have dropped out due to more pressing commitments. ‘New members are always welcome,’ said Keith. The Bribie Ukulele Strummers are quite popular within the local community and are often asked to play at parties and other events as well as occasionally making an appearance at
On Monday June 19th, the group will be performing at the Village Deli in First Avenue and Keith told me that this might become a regular gig. ‘We will be playing there for one hour from 1 – 2pm,’ Keith explained. ‘Nothing is set in concrete at this stage about how often we will be there so we’ll just see how it goes. The members are always ready to perform, they just enjoy playing,’ he added. With a list of over one hundred songs to choose from, the strummers never fail to find a melody that will please anyone who comes along to enjoy their performance. Keith describes the members as a really happy group who

from the 40’s and 50’s. The bar will be open and there will be lucky door prizes as well as raffles throughout the evening. The Caboolture Warplane and Flight Heritage Museum is a totally not for profit organisation run entirely by volunteers and events such as the Swing Night are
all have their own story to tell and their own favourite songs. ‘The ukulele is known as a happy instrument and I think this has something to do with the fact that the songs that are played on it are always happy songs,’ Keith told me. ‘It is an easy instrument to play and enjoy,’ he said. The current members of the Bribie Ukulele Strummers are Joy Ross, Lyn Dunabeitia, Philly Adamson and Martina Fraser. They are all talented musicians and according to Keith, the urge to play music occasionally manifests itself at the most unusual times and in a variety of situations. ‘Joy sometimes gets the urge to play a tune in the very early hours of the morning and Lyn serenades her pet donkey Diedre,’ he revealed. Anyone interested in learning to play the ukulele should give Keith a call on 0419 733 282 and, you just never know, you might become the next member of the Bribie Ukukeke Strummers.

DEDICATION TO CHALLENGE PAYS OFF

Second place. A RECENT twelve week commitment to eating the correct food and following a rigorous exercise routine has been a rewarding experience for ten clients of Jade Parker at Just Elite Performance. As participants in the twelve week challenge, the women were required to adhere to a strict diet that was managed by Jade and involved a balanced intake of protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre. Along with the diet, all those
involved had to maintain an exercise routine that involved up to eight sessions of intensive training each week and for the duration of the challenge, all food eaten had to be recorded as well as the results of daily weigh-ins. The results along with photos were sent to Jade each Friday and, after assessing what she was sent, Jade would often make changes to the required foods to be consumed. Jade always stresses the

Jade explained that flexible dieting is best suited to those people who can generally keep on track without being told what to do all the time. ‘It is for those members of a society that enjoy not having any restrictions on what foods they can eat when they go out to social evenings or for that matter, when they are at home and don’t have very much in the cupboard,’ Jade said. ‘Flexible dieting is not a diet but a way of life if it is maintained over long periods. It is perfect for all members of a family, people on a budget and those who become bored with a set
meal plan,’ she said. One of the participants in the twelve week challenge (and one of the three eventual winners) was busy mum of three and part time administration worker, Selina Whetlor. Selina totally dedicated herself to following Jade’s recommendations and, at the end of the challenge, weighed in almost eight kilograms less than her commencement weight. ‘I was doing an exercise session at 5.30 in the morning and another in the evening,’ Selina told me. ‘I was totally committed,’ she proudly said. It would seem that as a very experienced athlete and qualified trainer, Jade Parker is onto a real winner with her challenge programs and, if there is anyone who would like to enquire about taking up the challenge, Jade would welcome a call on 0466 538 165.

SOME THINGS ARE GOOD SOME ARE BAD
IN the May issue of the Mini Bribie Islander, I wrote an article which revealed details of my so far successful attempts at becoming a non-smoker and, as I still have not given in to the ever-present temptation, I felt that it was appropriate to also provide an insight into one or two of the methods that I find are helping me to resist. There are quite a number of products on the market that claim to be the best one when it comes to taking away the urge to light up. Personally, I seem to have developed an exceptional liking for the taste associated with anything minty. I find that sucking on a mint flavoured lolly leaves a really fresh taste in my mouth and, for some reason or another, this keeps me from wanting to light a cigarette. The minimal
amount of information that is available about mint seems to suggest that it is beneficial in several ways including helping with digestion and easing an upset stomach. However, as with most good things, there is a possibility of suffering heartburn if you overindulge. The various gums available as a help to those who are quitting usually contain a certain amount of nicotine and, whilst some people claim they do work, this is only because chewing the gum provides a hit of nicotine by a means other than by smoking a cigarette. Yes, this certainly prevents more damage to the bodily organs due to smoke inhalation but, as nicotine itself is addictive, creates a brand new dilemma. Once the user of the gum has definitely quit smoking, then they have to get rid of the
by Neil Wilson
nicotine addiction and, from some instances that I am aware of, that can be not only bad but also very, very hard.
the way he annoys other people due to his habit has been known to be the cause of laughter at times and serious concern at others.
What I have written in the previous paragraph has just reminded me of one particular person’s conversion from smoking to gum chewing and his so far unsuccessful attempts to quit the gum habit. The man in question gave up smoking about fifteen years ago and relied heavily on chewing nicotine gum as a substitute for cigarettes. The sad part is that he is still a complete gum addict. Instead of buying this gum in the usual retail pack that is available from the appropriate outlets, because he goes through such an almost unbelievable amount each day, he purchases it by the commercial sizes carton. As if this isn’t unusual enough,
When this gum addict is finished with his well chewed piece of gum, he just disposes of it in a completely uncaring manner and this has often been either on his dinner plate, back in the pocket of his shirt or even on the blinker control of his car. I recall one particular incident in which he had left gum on a plate and, due to the plate being cleaned by a dishwashing machine and the interior of the machine ending up with gum stuck on various parts, his partner called him words that I had never even heard. For me, I think the mint lollies will do the job very nicely but I do have to admit, I am definitely becoming addicted.
Happy birthday to owner/ editor Richard!

STRAWBERRY SEASON KICKS OFF IN MORETON BAY THE first punnets have been filled to the brim and thousands of vibrant, ripe red fruits are ready for the picking - a sure sign strawberry season has started in the Moreton Bay Region. Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said Queensland’s strawberry season, running annually from May to October, was always a berry exciting time of year in Moreton Bay, with hundreds of local job opportunities expected to be ripe for the picking over the coming months. “Queensland’s strawberry industry outputs up to 15,000 tonnes of fruit per season, equating to an incredible 60 million punnets of strawberries and injecting $180 million into the state’s economy annually,” Mayor Sutherland said. “With almost 80 per cent of Queensland’s strawberries grown right here in Caboolture in the Moreton Bay Region and up to the Sunshine Coast, it’s an exciting time of year not only for local strawberry farmers, but also for local job seekers. “As the season reaches its peak around August and September, plenty of on-farm employment opportunities will soon be up for grabs, including picking strawberries in the field or working in packing sheds
to place fruit into punnets, checking quality and organising pallets for delivery to stores. “While this type of physical, seasonal work may not be for everybody, it could be a great job opportunity for young people or residents looking for some temporary work, to earn some extra money for the family, or simply wanting to learn a new skill. Local strawberry farmer, Laura Wells, together with David Fairweather and their families Schiffke and Stothart, have been operating the ‘Taste n See’ strawberry farms at Bellmere, near Caboolture, for 26 years and at other locations within the Moreton Bay Region for 45 years. Mrs Wells said the local strawberry industry could be a significant employer of local people. “Each season, Taste ‘n’ See alone produces around five million punnets of strawberries - 100 per cent of which have been stocked in Coles Supermarkets along the East Coast of Australia for the past ten years - from Far North Queensland down to Victoria,” Mrs Wells said. “We’re always looking for more local people to join our team, as a returning workforce means less time and costs spent on training each year. “Right now we employ

taste as well.
“Our employees are like one big family during picking and packing season while there’s a lot of hard work to do to ensure our strawberries are of the highest quality, we always find time to have a laugh.
Mr Fairweather said his morning ritual involved tasting a strawberry from each block, to check whether any nutrients in the soils needed to be altered to guarantee that perfect taste.
“We do have a seasonal strawberry stall where people can buy fresh produce picked straight from the farm.” And according to Mrs Wells, that’s the best way to enjoy a strawberry, “fresh is best”. “You can’t beat a freshly picked strawberry, and we try to maintain that fresh taste, look and feel through the way we pick, pack and deliver our produce to ensure our customers can experience that great, fresh
“A nice tip - before you eat a strawberry, make sure you take them out of the fridge and serve them at room temperature. That way you’ll experience their true taste!”
“A good strawberry should be vibrant in colour, have a glossy shine and a vibrant green ‘calyx’ [the green leafy part of a strawberry],” Mr Fairweather said. “Our main aim is to provide a quality product for our consumers every time, so a lot of TLC goes into our farming practices to ensure we achieve that.” For more information about jobs visit https:// www.facebook.com/ schiffkestrawberryfarm/ or http://stohart.wordpress. com/

LEARN SOMETHING NEW THIS WINTER AT U3A MORE than 1400 senior local residents attend a wide variety of different classes at Bribie University of the Third Age (U3A) each week. At the recent AGM, President Greg Sibthorpe was re-elected for another year, together with most of the previous committee of 12, and a new treasurer Ian Corin. This hard working committee will take an end of term 2 holiday for a couple of weeks, before term 3 enrolment on Monday 3rd July, when over 150 classes will resume again on July 10th.
Richard Alan has offered to run a new class to introduce absolute beginners to its delights next term, where raw beginners will enjoy learning and playing together once a week on Monday afternoons at 3pm.
Understanding the Middle East is something few of us can truly understand, yet we hear news about it almost daily through the media. Gloria Gordon will conduct a new course in Term 3 to discuss the complex historic and current relationships in the Middle East. Richard Allan - Ukulele for beginners
U3A Committee 2017/18 (President Greg Sibthorpe & Treasurer Ian Corin on left, Barry Clark absent)
Enrolment for all available classes will take place at U3A Centre on First Avenue on Monday 3rd July between 9am and noon. The timetable of classes in term 3 can be found at the Bribie Library, Visitor Information Centre, and Neighbourhood Centre, as well as the U3A Centre during term time. Some classes are already full with ongoing students from the last term, but there are many very interesting classes with vacancies such as; Australian history, Greek dancing for fun, lawn bowls, croquet, chess, scrabble and singalong.
As well as the wide choice of existing and ongoing classes in Arts & Crafts, Language, Music, Dance, Games and other “Learning for Fun” subjects, there are a number of other new offerings in term 3. These include Understanding Plants for those who know nothing much about them. Hazel Beneke will conduct these classes and says “the class will learn about how plants work and how they can be identified, how plants reproduce and why they grow in some places and not others, and why are there so many shapes of leaves, and different colours and textures”. These new classes will be held on Monday afternoons from 1pm to 2:30pm.
There are also brand new class for those wishing to make music for the first time by learning to play the ukulele. The ukulele is arguably the most played musical instrument in the world, and may also be one of the easiest instrument to learn, which explains its universal popularity.
This is a new class for just one term where students will understand the artificial nature of many Middle East countries, and how the religious and ethnic allegiances of the people contribute to the current situation. These new classes will be held on Thursday afternoons for term 3 at 1:30pm at the U3A centre.
Gloria Gordon – the Middle East complexities.
BE PART OF U3A LEARNING FOR FUN
There are vacancies in all these classes, and many others, and new joiners are always welcome. If you are having concerns about enrolling in a class about which you know absolutely nothing, then you could consider joining one of the classes specifically for absolute beginners, such as Family History and Bridge for Beginners.
It is not about knowing all the answers, but sharing knowledge and learning new and fascinating things each week. These Global Trivia classes will be held on Monday morning between 11am and 12:30pm.
Hazel Beneke - Understanding Plants and Global Trivia.
Hazel Beneke will also run another class that was popular last year, for those wishing to improve their general knowledge and global awareness. This takes the form of a weekly question and answer session where students work together in teams to try and answer a range of questions on interesting topics.
U3A is always looking for new people with an interest or life experience to share with others. If you know someone who has a hobby or skill that could give a short presentation, or a weekly class, U3A would love to hear from you. You don’t have to be a teacher to share your knowledge with others at Bribie Island U3A. Enrolment for the all available term 3 classes at U3A will be held at U3A Centre on First Avenue on Monday 3rd July. You can contact U3A during office hours on 3408 1450.

Care
DUNG BEETLES FOR DOGGY DOO DOOS
Dogs have long been our “best friends” but doggy doo doos are a less pleasant aspect of cohabiting with dogs. Dog poo is smelly, sticks like mud to shoes, and often left out in the open. Dogs are not tidy about where they leave their poo, as cats are: cats bury theirs. Dogs leave their poo out, as a “calling card” for other dogs. It advises
CA FE
other dogs that the area belongs to said defecator, and imparts biographical information too such as the age, sex and reproductive status. Dog poo is coated with anal gland secretion, adding to its pungency, and imparting an individual signature. Beetles recycle dog poo, and to boost the beetle population, do not throw your doggy doo doos away, but move them onto garden beds. It then becomes beetle food and the number of beetles increases to recycle doggy doo doos faster. Phone Dr Jackie for Veterinary appointments on: 0400 699 704

FASHION COMES ALIVE AT TOMBOLA AT THE BONGAREE BOWLS CLUB SHOPPE 5 by Neil Wilson BEING able to select from an extensive range of labels and styles has always been of importance to ladies with a discerning eye for fashion and the opportunity to do exactly that has been greatly increased with the recent opening of Shoppe 5 Boutique on Goodwin Drive at Bongaree. Situated right next to Raine and Horne, Shoppe 5 boutique has already attracted a steady flow of shoppers who have been thrilled to find clothing, footwear and other accessories that are not available elsewhere. Owner Jean Hancock explained to me that the range of styles in the boutique are mainly to suit ladies who are forty and over. ‘I have a great range available and the labels include Lindi, CC, Bayflower, Jham and Jo Brown. Fashions by Joseph
Ribhoff from Canada will arrive by September,’ Jean told me. ‘Customers can also choose from footwear by the Melbourne label Wallnut and a small range of accessories,’ she added. Jean is already well known to some Bribie Islanders for her excellent customer service and discerning taste due to her time in business at the Banksia Beach shopping centre. ‘I have had a break for about twelve months and I decided to open up here because I think this location will be more convenient for customers,’ said Jean. With ample parking, a great range to choose from and very competitive pricing, Shoppe 5 Boutique has every chance of becoming the most popular fashion outlet on Bribie Island (Jean gives her customers yummy chocolates too).
SHOPPE 5
The Old Bribie Harbour Village Boutique is back. We are now called “Shoppe 5” and have just opened in Bongaree, in the old Bishin Shop. Accessories, Shoes, Winter Fashion with new Summer Fashion arriving. Labels include Lindi, CiCi, Bayflower, Capallo, Jham, Joe Browns and more (Joseph Ribhoff coming soon).

THE Bongaree Lady Bowlers will hold the annual Tombola on Saturday June 24th at 1pm at the Bongaree Bowls Club, 54 Toorbul St. Because of the great array of prizes, this event is always highly successful. It consists of a continuous raffle held over the afternoon. Tickets are sold at the great value price of four for $2 and are held in the barrel for all draws. In the past, this has resulted in some
lucky ticket holders winning more than once with the same ticket. The club is grateful for the many donations of goods and vouchers received from local businesses on the Island and from club members who always contribute many and varied prizes. Entertainment and fun is ensured for all who participate.
WHEN EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE COUNTS by Neil Wilson I DON’T think it matters what profession, event or situation you care to think about, the fact is that if any or all of the above are governed by many years of experience, there will more than likely be a successful outcome. With this in mind, the previous statement could never be more correct than when considering Bribie Island resident and naturopath, Irene Ward. After having her own community nursing service in Victoria, Irene now successfully practices natural therapies on the island and many of her clients who are benefitting from her twenty years of experience are from the local community. ‘Naturopathy can address the cause of the illness, not just the symptoms and this will result in an increase in a client’s sense of wellbeing,’ Irene said. ‘It is important that clients have a detailed assessment which takes into account their history
and then make appropriate diet changes as well as using nutritional and herbal supplements if necessary,’ she told me. Irene advises that possible causes of health imbalances include inadequate absorption of nutrients, chronic stress, hormonal imbalances as well as allergies and food sensitivities. As a naturopath and Bowen therapist, Irene has successfully treated many clients who have suffered from muscularskeletal problems. ‘Bowen Therapy offers a gentle, remedial therapy that can often result in long term pain relief,’ said Irene. ‘It is even completely safe to use it for the treatment of babies,’ she added. Anyone who would like to find out more about how Irene’s experience as a therapist may be of lasting benefit can call her on 0407 3378.

BRIBIE ISLAND BUTTERFLY HOUSE by Neil Wilson
MEET THE VOLUNTEERS - ROBYN BIETOLA ONE of the many dedicated volunteers who donate their time and energy to ensure that the Bribie Island Butterfly House is maintained to the standard that one would expect of any organisation which has Ray Archer at the helm is Robyn Bietola. A comparatively new addition to the team, Robyn began helping at the Butterfly House in January of this year. ‘I am so pleased that I decided to apply to be a volunteer after reading about it in The Bribie Islander,’ Robyn said. ‘Helping out here is really rewarding and the butterflies make you feel so relaxed. I really enjoy telling others about it too,’ she added. Originally from New South Wales, Robyn moved to
Queensland in 2004 and after working in both the pathology field as well as childcare, she has recently retired. Robyn told me that when she first came to the Butterfly House she became involved in helping out with plant grafting and other general nursery related tasks which gave her the opportunity to learn new skills. However, due to having extensive experience working in laboratories and now that the breeding section is operational, Robyn spends her rostered two days each week in there looking after the caterpillars and the equipment as well as passing on her skills to others. ‘I really love laboratory work,’ Robyn explained. ‘Ray Archer is a

say that in this case, and I’m sure many others, it is very easy to see how much the volunteers at the Bribie Island Butterfly House enjoy what they do. Well done Robyn.
THE BUTTERFLIES ARE WAITING
AFTER a great deal of meticulous planning and organisation as well as many months of construction and team training, the new Bribie Island Butterfly House will open its doors to the public for the first time on Wednesday, June 21st from 10am until 4pm. Anyone who is keen to see the final result of the painstaking efforts by the many volunteers but is unable to find the time on the Wednesday will be given another chance to mingle with the helpful staff and the beautiful butterflies on Sunday, 25th June during the same times.
At the Butterfly House, there is always something new to see and a great example of this is the Scarlet Jezebel chrysalises that volunteer and Bribie Island firefighter Glen Cleminson has supplied. Glen is a very keen butterfly enthusiast and
Volunteer Glen Cleminson hanging some mistletoe for the butterflies to lay their eggs on. a really valuable member of the volunteer team. The Scarlet Jezebel butterfly, which is also known as the Northern Jezabel, can sometimes be seen around coastal Queensland and New South Wales as well as around Darwin. This colourful specimen will often feed on the nectar of the Melaleuca flowers and lay eggs on some form
of mistletoe. Mistletoe is the main food plant for the caterpillars of many different butterflies and grows as an aerial plant on the branches of many trees and shrubs. There is a chance that you will spot one of these beauties flying in the wild during the cooler months, but you will certainly be able to see them at the Butterfly House on First Avenue at
The colourful Scarlet Jezebel Bongaree directly behind the Orchid House. Bribie Island Butterfly House would still like to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer. For information on volunteering, go to www. bribieislandbutterflyhouse. org where you will find a volunteer application form.

The Annual Bongaree Mens Bowls 2 day Carnival held over the weekend of June 10th and 11th was a great success. Both greens were full to capacity and spectators were treated to some great bowling displays. Teams attended from as far away as Oakey, Canungra and Mooloolaba and all agreed that the organisation, catering and greens were of a high standard and are looking forward to next year’s event. Overall winners were Pine Rivers 1st, Mooloolaba 2nd and Bribie Island 3rd.

the community voice Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
The Bribie Island Meals on Wheels delivers over 25,000 meals a year to the elderly on Bribie Island and Sandstone Point. The Federal Government only subsides us $2.88 per meal for those over 65 and the Department of Communication, Child Safety and Disabilities helps fund clients under 65 with disabilities. Currently our clients are charged $10 for soup/salad, hot meals(meat& 3 veggies), dessert and a juice delivered to their door Monday to Friday. Frozen meals are available for those needing a weekend supply. We receive no subsidies from the Moreton Bay Council who now charge us rates. Some sporting bodies do not, but we do a fact that we find unfair. All our costs - food, wages, insurances and equipment - have to by funded by ourselves. Factoring in these costs, the meals actually cost us 12.50 to produce. Busy Fingers recently paid for our new stove and the RSL Ladies’ Auxiliary replaced our defunct office computers.
As a visitor from South Coast NSW, I am very disappointed that a world class painter of Fairweather’s stature is treated with disrespect by the community of the place he loved. Some of the greatest works in Australian art history were created in that hut on Bribie.
We are holding a 3 course Fundraising Dinner on the 1st of July at the Golden Age Woorim for $35 per head, door opening at 6pm. We would appeal to the broader community and businesses to support this cause, as often we are the difference between some of our clients staying in their home or having to move into residential care. Bookings can be made on 3408 1721.

The display at the Art Gallery is frankly quite sad. Surely a room could be set aside with good quality prints of his paintings and remnants of his life on the island. Are the people of Bribie Island not aware of his massive contribution to Australian art? The tourism potential for honouring this man would be huge. Please discuss this with your friends.
