LEGENDS COME TO BRIBIE ISLAND

By Neil Wilson

The Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club became a real hive of activity on Friday August 11th when, as part of the PGA Legends Tour, forty professional golfers took to the course along with amateurs for the 2017 Ladbrokes Legends Pro-Am sponsored by Mancorp Homes as well as the Moreton Bay Regional Council and other businesses. With a prize pool of $11,000, the winning professional netted $1,900 for the event. With players teeing off for a shotgun start at 11am, the round attracted some of the top Australian golfers including seven times European tour winner Roger Davis as well as

New Zealand professional Martin Pettigrew and Scott Puzey from the United States. This was the first time that the legends have played at Pacific Harbour and following this event, the legends played at the Pine Rivers course two days later on the Sunday and spokesperson for the club told me that having the legends in the region for three days would certainly be a boost to the region.

LOVE AND A SIMPLE RULE MAKE A MARRIAGE LAST By Neil Wilson

As there are so many instances in which the age old wedding vow about staying together “until death do us part” seems to be so easily ignored, it is refreshing when one learns of a long lasting marriage between two people who are obviously happy. Celebrating their sixty fifth wedding anniversary this month are Sandstone Point couple, June and Peter Rawson and when I asked what they believe has contributed to their lasting union, they told me that as well as always loving each other, it is important to never go to sleep on an argument. ‘If you don’t sort it out that night, you wake up with a bad start to the day,’ June explained.

On their wedding day

Both June and Peter are from England and met at an afternoon dance in Doncaster. June told me that, as she was only fifteen at the time, after the dance had finished and her friend asked if she would be returning

for the evening dance, she replied that her mum would probably not allow her. ‘Peter was across the way with another group and at that stage I hadn’t even noticed him. Someone asked him if he was coming back in the evening and he said that he had to go home to get his own tea as his mother was out,’ said June. Then he looked over at me and said I could come and make his sandwiches anytime. I was allowed back that evening and Peter and I danced every dance and we’ve been together ever since,’ she added. June quipped with a smile that Peter never did learn to make his own sandwiches. One year later saw the couple become engaged and, after another three years they were married on August 9th, 1952. They moved to Australia and settled in the Brisbane suburb of Chermside in 1970. June explained that she obtained work immediately as the receptionist for a veterinary surgeon after being chosen from over 120 applicants. Peter however took a while before he became employed at the Reserve Bank as a Security Officer. ‘I had been in the Territorial Army in England so I think that helped me to get the job,’ said Peter. ‘I worked there until I retired and after I retired, they shut the place down,’ he said with a grin. After living for many years in Gumdale, June and Peter moved to Bribie Island and then eventually to their current address at Sandstone Point. To keep active they

both work as volunteers at the Beaumont aged care facilities and also take time out to go on cruises to various destinations throughout the globe. When I visited them it was very obvious that they also enjoy keeping their garden and surrounding yard in beautiful condition. As a sign of the admiration that the community has for their achievement, Division One Councillor

Brooke Savige sent them a letter of congratulation in which she said that they are an inspiration to the many generations in their family. The couple have two children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. June and Peter, the team at The Bribie Islander would like to congratulate you on your sixty five years together and wish you both all the best for the future.

GIVING HISTORY A FUTURE As advancements are made and technology is refined in every invention or situation that is known to man, the forerunners to these all become part of history and, to ensure that the efforts of those involved in progress are never forgotten, it is so very important to preserve examples and records for future reference. One example of an invention and then an industry that is rich in history is of course aviation and at Caboolture Airfield, one organisation is working hard to give the history of aviation and those involved a future and they describe their mission as “Giving aviation a future as well as honouring the sacrifices of the brave men and women who have served our country and to ensure that they are never forgotten. The Australian Aviation Heritage Centre at Hangar

104, 157 McNaught Road in Caboolture was founded by dedicated aviation enthusiast Ralph Cusack at Hendra in 2002 as the Beaufort Restoration Group and this was due to an ongoing project involving the restoration of MK VII Beaufort Bomber A9-141. After the move to Caboolture in 2007 and a change to the current title, Organisation President Ralph Cusack and others involved have worked tirelessly to bring a range of twentieth century military, commercial and privately operated aircraft to the centre. Aircraft now at the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre include a Caribou, an ex Flying Doctor Service operated DeHavilland Drover, the Piper Navaho operated by the Queensland Government in the Bjelke Petersen era

and a recently acquired Westland Wessex helicopter which had been operated by the Royal Australian Navy. As well as this line up and another five aircraft still stored in containers, there is a Cessna Bird Dog as used by Forward Air Controllers in the Vietnam War, a Tiger Moth which Ralph bought as a birthday gift for his partner Kay and of course the still being restored Beaufort Bomber. This Beaufort and others of the same type were used extensively by the Royal Australian Air Force in the defence of Australia during World War II and became known as the

Air Force’s work horse. Ralph explained to me that his aim is to make the centre into a multi-faceted facility where visitors are able to see examples of all things related to aviation and for the centre to be a part of what he describes as a heritage trail associated with the area. ‘There is the Abbey Museum, the Historical Village, the Seaside Museum at Bribie which all relate to our history,’ said Ralph. ‘I would also like to bring other collections of aircraft and memorabilia to the centre and have been talking to people about this for some time. If we can do this we will be in a much stronger position,’ he added. As well as the main floor area within Hangar 104, there is also a mini-theatre where visitors are able to view relevant informative videos while seated in seats once used in aircraft. Ralph told me that a part of the plan is to eventually have a proper I-Max theatre. As the centre is a not for profit organisation, all the aircraft restoration work is carried out by dedicated volunteers and Ralph said that at present there about forty who help with the

A TREE FOR EVERY MEMBER By Neil Wilson

At a ceremony in Woorim recently, Division One Councillor Brooke Savige officially declared the new look Rotary Park in North Street officially open before joining with representatives from the Rotary Club and the Bribie RSL to plant the first tree of a number that were planted on the day. After the first tree had been planted, other people including Rotarians and even some school children assisted with planting the remainder of the trees.

RSL and the Moreton Bay Regional Council. Rotary Club President Jeff Eustace told me that seeing the way the park looked was a great feeling. ‘It has been three years of ups and downs but we finally got there,’ said Jeff. ‘The driving force behind the project has been our co-ordinator, Rae Guyder, who never stopped pushing things along. She fought quite a few obstacles along the way until she worked her way through it,’ he added.

The morning’s events marked the culmination of a three year improvement project for the park which the Rotary Club of Bribie Island had carried out in conjunction with Bribie

Jeff mentioned to me that the tree planting served a dual purpose. ‘It was the Rotary International President’s wish this year that there is a tree planted for every Rotarian in the

By Barry Clark

Bribie Island Historical Society has been working hard for nearly 10 years to research, document and showcase fascinating aspects of local history.

Society provides valuable historical insights and records of the past, with regular newspaper articles, magazine publications and its own brochures.

It has created a Database of over 370,000 cross referenced items of local history, which include Photographs, Maps, Letters, Newspapers, Films, Videos, Recordings and personal stories spanning almost 250 years.

The Historical Society founder Barry Clark, together with past Presidents Graham Mills, Donna Holmes and current President Lynne Hooper, all give presentations to local Clubs and Groups, as well as conducting Heritage walks around the island throughout the year.

Formed initially by a few U3A local history students, the Society has grown in membership and achieved much in recent years. In conjunction with the Seaside Museum and Council, the Historical

THE PEOPLE HAVE CHOSEN

By Neil Wilson

On the final day of the very successful nineteenth Mathew Flinders Art Prize exhibition which ran at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre from 14th July to August 2nd, talented coloured pencil artist Leonie Meyer was rewarded for her efforts when she was announced as the winner of the People’s Choice award.

Leonie was presented with her $500 prize by Division One Councillor, Brooke Savige who said that she was very pleased to see Leonie win the award and that people have recognised Graham Davies received his award from Stephanie White

the amount of work that she has put in. ‘I saw Leonie’s entry on the opening day of the exhibition and I was completely blown away,’ said Councillor Savige. ‘Leonie has incredible talent and, as she is the Venue Supervisor at the Seaside Museum, I have worked with her on a professional level and I know just how brilliant she is at what she does.’ The entry that obviously won people’s hearts was entitled “Aleria” and was a coloured pencil work depicting Leonie’s niece sitting on a mangrove limb. Leonie told those present that the work had taken her 120 hours to complete. ‘Winning the award has made the effort worthwhile and I think it shows that coloured pencil is finally being recognised as a true art form,’ Leonie said.

Leonie Meyer with Councillor Brooke Savige Also recognised at the small ceremony was Hanger’s Prize winner Graham Davies who was presented with his award by Stephanie White. Graham commented that he believed that this year’s exhibition had been the best that he had seen and that the standard of the 253 entries had been excellent. As I took a look around the exhibition, I could not help but be impressed by the great variety of entries and I have to admit that I was particularly taken by one particular exhibit and this was the very lifelike dog, “Lucy the Bitzer,” which had been fashioned out of galvanised wire by Liz Edols and was the recipient of a commended award.

After the ceremony, I spoke to venue manager Julie Thomson who told me that the next exhibition at the centre will be an exciting Touring Textile Exhibition entitled “Material Matters” by Brisbane artist Kay S Lawrence. ‘This will run at the centre from August 8th until September 7th and will be the start of a month of textile activity,’ Julie said. ‘There will be workshops, talks, a knitting working bee and the culmination will be a yarn bomb/tree wrap on August 26th,’ she added. By Neil Wilson

The word around the island is that, on the weekend of September 9th and 10th, there are quite a few reasons to pay a visit to the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive at Banksia Beach and they are all related to the activities of the Gem and Fossicking Club. Whether you need to search for a special gift, replace a lost gem in a piece of

jewellery or purchase equipment for your lapidary hobby, the Gemfest weekend has it all. There will be exhibitors selling rough gemstones, faceted stones jewellery, fossils and mineral specimens as well as lapidary tools and equipment. Stall holders from all over Australia come to the island for Gemfest and as well as beautiful hand crafted jewellery and a wide range of quality gemstones, sapphires, rubies and emeralds being available for purchase, visitors can discuss their personal needs with the wide range of manufacturing jewellers that will be in attendance.

For the children, there will be fossicking tables where they are able to hunt for hidden gems as well as a lucky dip and there will be a wonderful children’s raffle to be won. A BBQ with freshly cooked food will be available and coffee, cakes and cold drinks and all at very reasonable prices. There will also be a major raffle to be won and the prize which has been generously donated by the Tangalooma

Island Resort is a family (two adults and two children) day trip to the resort. Also to be won in the raffle are three fabulous jewellery prizes that have been created by club members. Tickets for this raffle will be sold for $2.00 and are available from the Gem and Fossicking Club. This promises to be a great weekend for all and entry to the show is by gold coin with children under fifteen years to be admitted free.

Entertainers of the Island

By Neil Wilson

DREADLOCK COWBOY that it’s important to get our raw feelings across to the listening audience,’ Hayley said. ‘If we can do that it will enable their emotions to become a part of it. To make someone laugh, to help someone cry and to inspire someone to find their own voice, that’s what it’s all about,’ she added.

Dreadlock Cowboy - Hayley and Corey There is no doubt that anyone who takes to the stage to entertain an audience is blessed with a very special gift and if we apply this to those who entertain with music, there are some who limit their performances to a specific genre and others who mix it up with a wide variety of songs. If we consider those in the latter category, the duo Dreadlock Cowboy automatically comes to mind. Combining the talents of Hayley Small and Corey Conway, Dreadlock Cowboy have become well known locally due to their performances on one Friday of each month at the Blue Pacific Hotel and, with a mix of blues, folk and country as

well as rock and pop, always amaze patrons with their versatility. Whilst Corey has only recently joined with Hayley, Dreadlock Cowboy is definitely no newcomer to the music scene having released a self titled album in 2008 which, in a review by scene magazine, was described as “A wonderful album which completely instils a sense of calm and fun all at the same time.” For those who witness a performance by the duo, it becomes obvious just how much Hayley and Corey enjoy bringing their love of music to the stage.

As well as their regular Bribie Island gigs, Dreadlock Cowboy will soon be entertaining music lovers at both Beachmere and Burpengary and, in the past, have become well known through their performances at venues up and down the Queensland coast. Hayley told me that a very special part of their performance

schedule and one that is dear to their hearts is when they get the chance to entertain at charity events. Whenever Dreadlock Cowboy take to the stage, those who are lucky enough to be there to enjoy the sound of this exciting duo comment that the only bad part was when the performance came to an end. Anyone who would like to find out where they can go to hear Dreadlock Cowboy or perhaps would like to book Hayley and Corey to entertain at a function can contact Hayley on 0413 935103 or message them on their Facebook page.

INCONIC KOMBI

Beginnings

You many have recently seen this little Volkswagon Kombi highlighted in our Mini Bribie Islander or roaming the streets of Bribie and surrounds from time to time. While this iconic Kombi has been restored to show room condition it’s beginings were much humbler. Built as a VW Type 2 commercial vehicle in Wolksburg Germany on 17th January 1958 the Kombi left for Victoria 4 days later. Shipped as a CKD (knocked down kit) it was reassembled in the Victorian VW factory before being sold for commercial duties. While there were numerous Type 2 models over the years there was only one true ‘Kombi’. The Kombi was a bus that could assume commercial duties during the week and then double as a family transport on the weekend, just add seats! Over the years the

Kombi made its way to Queensland where it ended up in Samford, tired and at the end of its life. It was used alongside another bus for wood storage in a shed where it sat quietly for years. A chance happening 7 years ago meant the bus saw light of day again. It was removed from its storage and with a little love and attention actually drove out of Samford under its own steam! Finds like this don’t occur everyday and luckily for this Kombi it was destined for a complete bare metal restoration. Restoring a Kombi is a painstaking process and across the course of 6 years owners Ian and Jen ensured the bus received the attention it deserved. It’s surprising that almost every part of a Kombi can still be purchased either new or reproduced today, new metal, engine parts, interior etc. That was fortunate as the bus

needed LOTS of metal work. The Kombi was soda blasted to uncover the work that needed to be done. At some stage the bus had been on its side in an accident pushing the passenger side and roof up 1”. When the metal work was done it was time for paint. Custom blue and vintage white were the order of the day. With all the new metal that was done she only needed some high build primer (no filler or

bog), lots of sanding and the paint flowed on nicely. The underside of the Kombi is as impressive as the top. All running gear was painstakingly sanded and sprayed in gunmetal grey with matching blue stoneguard on the under floor and chassis. Then we needed the parts to get her back on the road again. In line with the ‘period look with modern engineering’ theme, modern coil over double wishbone suspension was installed up front with IRS at the rear (she now sits 3” lower). Disk brakes, hydraulic clutch, upgraded transmission, McPherson steering, bespoke wiring throughout for the hidden LED lighting and a new 2276cc engine meant the Kombi would be reliable and as safe as a Kombi can be.

Once the engineering approval was complete the focus turned to the interior. Something period looking but customised was needed. A period looking GPS driven speedo and Bluetooth stereo with hidden speakers would not only add functionality but look great. Imported TMI vinyl would ensure the interior looked like it came directly out of the factory. The middle seat was shortened from a 3 to 2 seater which allows easier rear access but again adds

a touch of customisation to the trained eye. With over 900hrs invested and every nut and bolt either replaced or refurbished the bus turned out great and is certainly a head turner. It looks like it could have just rolled off the factory floor in Wolfsburg Germany. We like to think that if those at the factory had access to modern engineering tools and materials then this is the bus they would have built. The impromptu conversations, waves and smiles we get are always welcome. If you see us on the road then give us a beep and a wave! Thank you to the following local businesses for helping to make this bus what it is today - Max Auto Paint (Tweed), Performance Upholstery (Ningi), Conti Engines (Ningi).

Islander - Mini

Welcome to another edition of The MINI. This year is flying by and as the weather warms up we will begin to see our tourist numbers increasing again. This is great for our local economy as it gives our local businesses a boost and helps them get through the quiet months. Of course though it does bring increased traffic and people, especially children. I ask you to please be aware of this and be extra safe on the roads, especially around our foreshore and park areas. One of my favourite parts of writing for the Bribie Islander is hearing the regular questions that get sent in for me to answer. This editions I will address some recurring questions. I regularly get asked about additional shopping opportunities in our area. We are lucky here to have

two Woolworths stores, Aldi and three IGA stores. What is missing is of course a Coles. Whilst I would love to see a Coles, Council have little to no say over which retails will take up space in retails areas. What we do know is we have the potential to gain another shopping precinct near the existing shopping area off Hornsby Road. This would come off Fortune Avenue, opposite the back of the Mitre 10, Indian and BOQ building. No application has been approved for this yet and there is significant constraints around the site. However if it were to proceed there is the possibility the centre will have the space for a grocery store, which could be occupied by a Coles. Another hot topic is whether a Big 4 is going

WE HAVE A PARTS SHOP TOO

Dear Customers, The Workshop will be CLOSED from 20th Sept to 4th Oct Due to Steve competing in the National Masters Hockey Championships. Sorry for any inconvenience.

in at Sandstone Point Hotel. The site plans did provide for a caravan park. It is unknown whether this would be a Big 4 or managed by a different provider but ultimately there is a caravan proposed for the site. Lastly, the most regular question is around population cap. I have covered before that there is no official population cap for Bribie Island, though it is limited by the availability of land. A very good follow up question I received is around density and what maximum heights are currently permitted and will these change. The maximum building height on Bribie Island under the current planning scheme is 15 meters. However, this does not apply to all land on Bribie Island. Blocks

are zoned differently depending on the type of development expected to be seen in various areas. If you have questions about how specific blocks are zoned you can access property reports from the council website for free. You can also see planning applications and approval information for individual properties by using the PD online tool, also available from council’s website. Do you have another question you would like me to answer? Feel free to contact me any time or you can send your questions to the editor of the Bribie Islander and I can answer it in my column.

INAUGURAL PRIZE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS

By Neil Wilson

As an incentive for young artists, the Bribie Island Community Arts Society have now launched the Mathew Flinders Gallery Next Generation Art Prize and are inviting entries from anyone between the ages of eight and eighteen who has an artistic calling. ‘Now that the Arts Centre has removed the hugely successful Mathew Flinders Art Prize exhibition, it’s time for the young to shine,’ said organising committee member Lynne Smith. ‘We want to see

entries from young artists who love to paint, draw, sketch, collage, pot or create in any medium,’ she added. Entries in the Next Generation Art Prize must be at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on September 19th after being registered and paid for by 12th September with a maximum of two entries per student and an entry fee of $5.00. Judging will be in three school year groups which are years three to six, years seven to ten and years

eleven and twelve. More than $2,000 in prize money will be on offer across the three sections. The art that is entered in the competition will be on display at the centre from 27th September until 15th October with the official opening of the exhibition happening on September 30th. Those wishing to find out more can email the centre at info@

Organising committee members Sarah Cave (L) and Lynne Smith are preparing for the onslaught of entries bribieartscentre.com.au or call on 3408 9288. Entry forms are available from the centre or from schools. ‘We are waiting to see what the young can do so we invite them to delight and surprise us,’ Lynne Smith told me.

HELPING WHEN HELP IS NEEDED When the Bribie Island Diabetes Support Group was recently contacted by representatives of the Wallum Action Group who wanted to know if there was anyone who might benefit from an insulin pump, the offer came at just the right time for a local mum who had been wanting one but was prohibited due to the cost being far beyond the family’s budget.

For many who live with type one diabetes, the routines and heralthy lifestyle choices made every day can be enough to keep them well but when something changes, routines can dramatically alter how they need to manage their diabetes. In the case of this diabetes sufferer, having her first child has caused unexplained difficulties associated in the control of her diabetes. At the beginning of this

Bribie Island Diabetes Support Group Vice-President Jan Donaldson explained to me that having the insulin pump will allow the recipient to get back her control of diabetes. ‘It will give her the confidence to know that she can look after her child without the fear of having a serious Low Blood Sugar incident,’ said Jan. ‘We are also able to provide her with a Continuous Blood Glucose device that will warn her when her levels begin to drop and this can happen one hour before hand, giving her the time to avoid a dangerous occurrence,’ she added. ‘We would like to offer our very sincere thanks to the

LORRAINE SPARKS as co-ordinator of the food distribution which happens ay the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre each Tuesday.

Lorraine Sparks In this, the second article acknowledging the wonderful efforts of the volunteers at the Neighbourhood Centre, we take a look at the very essential Oz Harvest food distribution and the driving force behind it, Lorraine Sparks. Having moved to our beautiful part of the world in 1993, Lorraine continued to work in her chosen field as a Home Economics educator until her retirement four years ago. With the belief that because life had been good to her and it was time to give back, Lorraine offered her services as a volunteer at the centre and, due to Lisa Nelson, the founder of the local Oz Harvest program needing to take some time off, was asked to take over

Because of her extensive experience in the field of home economics, Lorraine handled this task with ease and, upon her return, Lisa handed the role over to her on a permanent basis. As well as her Tuesday task, Lorraine also spends Monday at the centre during which she takes on a training and advisory role, guiding new volunteers through the various roles to be filled. Oz Harvest, the organisation which delivers the food that the centre distributes to those who need it, was founded in 2004 and is Australia’s leading food rescue charity. They collect quality food from commercial outlets and deliver it to more than nine hundred organisations throughout the country that support people in need. ‘The food is delivered each Tuesday morning and we never know what we are going to get,’ Lorraine explained. ‘ In this week’s delivery there was meat, potatoes, and tomatoes as well as apples, soft drink and even yoghurt,’ she added.

Those who come to the centre to receive food through this much needed service are required to wait until 9.10am before arriving and are issued with a number. They are then called into the distribution area in groups of three to receive their food. Lorraine told me that there currently forty regulars who attend the Oz Harvest day and, as the food has to be carried in and set out, three of the young men come early to help out. ‘As well as them, my husband Dennis has come along each week to assist with this task and he really is a great help,’ said Lorraine. Lorraine informed me that the food supplied by Oz Harvest comes from generous companies such as Aldi, Lite N’ Easy, Costco and even Qantas. She said thatr the truck does a daily pick up

from the Aldi store on Bribie which donate items such as meat as well as fruit and vegetables.

The Oz Harvest incentive is a really great idea and there is always a need for more support for the program, either by way of food or monetary donations and details about how to arrange this can be obtained by calling 07 3708 1380. The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre provides many other valuable support services as well as the Oz Harvest food distribution and anyone wishing to find out more about these services or about becoming a volunteer can either call inn at the centre on Verdoni Street in Bellara or call them on 3408 8440 Monday to Thursday.

GIVE THE SWORD TO PARALYSIS TICKS!!! or paralysis in natives because they evolved together. Not so with our introduced, beloved dogs and cats.

Each year on Bribie there seems to be more cases of paralysis ticks found on pets. Recently I was seeing a pet for a routine check- up and discovered a paralysis tick! Paralysis ticks are hard-bodied ticks and very tough customers, there are few effective treatments. The natural hosts are native animals and they cause no disease

Scalibor is the name of a weapon against paralysis ticks. It is an anti-tick collar costing and reduces paralysis ticks by 98% for 3 months. Impressive! It is rolled white plastic so is more comfortable for your dog than the traditional flat tick collar. Scalibor goes well with Comfortis, a highly effective flea control tablet given once per month. FIRST WAVE FOR MORETON BAY COASTAL HAZARD PROJECT Moreton Bay Regional Council

Griffin, Redcliffe and Toorbul.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has taken the first step towards developing its strategy to prepare for coastal hazards such as storm tide flooding and coastal erosion.

“It’s expected that the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy will encompass up to 15 per cent of the region; that’s why council’s first step has been to create an engagement plan and make sure all stakeholders can be involved in the process,” Mayor Sutherland said.

At its coordination committee meeting today, council endorsed a communication and engagement plan for its planned Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy to help identify and involve stakeholders in the strategy’s development.

“As work on the strategy progresses, council will establish a community reference group which will include community representatives from across the region.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said it was a critical first step in creating the strategy, with Moreton Bay being home to more than 170km of coastline and a number of urban coastal communities, including Bribie Island, Beachmere, Donnybrook,

“We want to make sure local residents, community groups and businesses can keep up-to-date and have their say as we develop this important strategy.” The first phase joins a $500,000 commitment by the Queensland Government towards council’s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy

through its QCoast2100 program. It follows council’s recent success at the Australian Costal Councils Conference held at Redcliffe, which saw Moreton Bay take out a hometown victory for its innovative use of remotelypiloted aircrafts to study seawalls along Moreton Bay. The project enabled council to capture information on more than 31km of seawalls in the region in just three days, including a number of locations that would’ve otherwise been inaccessible on foot, and provide data for important documents including the upcoming Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy.

“Council will also hold community days, meet with local chambers and industries, engage local environment groups and host online surveys and information on its website.

THE COMMUNITY VOICE

Dear Editor,

Re: Tree problem for Margaret and Vince Connell, Sandstone Point. If the gum tree was on a neighbours land, you could apply to Qld Civil Administration Tribunal to have the nuisance abated by removal of the tree but as the Tree is on Council land, the Council is excluded from the Legislation. Council hypocrisy is evident in that the identity of the Council spokesperson is concealed. Is the spokesperson qualified to claim the tree is healthy? The claim that trees on the shoreline provide stability for the foreshore embankment is another furphy in that the tree complained of is about 200 metres from the waters edge and on high ground perhaps 50 metres higher than the water.

If Council had any concern for the welfare of ratepayers, it would remove the tree and replant with suitable vegetation which would not cause distress.

Councillors are only too ready appear in photo opportunities to gain votes but when a complaint is made, the Councillor hides behind “a spokesperson said.” Write to your Councillor; request him or her to move a motion in Council to have the tree removed and replaced with suitable vegetation. True Arborists will advise that there is no place for gum trees in Urban areas. Gum trees are only suitable for forest locations. Let’s have some real Democratic action in our Council rather than back room decision makers. If your Councillor does not perform as required by Law, the next

Dear Editor Neil Wilson’s June 2017 “More Recognition requested” article and Robert Dixon’s letter to Editor: Ian Fairweather Park is a disgrace that would not be tolerated in any Shire of Queensland. Compare this ‘jungle’ with parks in Redcliffe Division. The Moreton Bay Regional Council boasts that it’s the third largest Council in Australia. Residents of Bribie

Island remind the Mayor and Councillor that this area is part of that Council. In the lead up to the 2016 Council election, Mayor Sutherland is on record saying, “I want to give the people who live here the best quality of life possible. That means good local roads, beautiful parks and picnic areas, nice playgrounds and world-class infrastructure.” It is not the people who are disrespectful of Fairweather or his contribution to Art Mr Dixon, look to our Council. Another classic example of disrespect is a park (sic) off Kangaroo Av. Bongaree. The Council could not even arrange the correct spelling of the person to be commemorated. NB: The parks correct identity is “Ernest Sendall Memorial Park.” Thomas J Mahon Sandstone Point
