ave you ever wondered what the natural beauty of Bribie Island has to offer apart from the normal access over the bridge to the beaches, shops and around the island’s roads and walkways?
There are a few very different places to see and visit that hold the history and protected flora and fauna that maybe you haven’t seen yet? Have you ever driven ‘up the beach’ where the glistening white sand meets the ocean and the bushland of the national park? There is another world of Bribie waiting for you which is off road and requires a four-wheel drive vehicle to go see the bouncing kangaroos, the tree climbing goannas, the bird life and much, much more. Gateway Discovery Tours offers this experience to you and friends or
family or both in a group outing to view this pristine and natural beauty that the northern part of the island offers and it’s well worth a look. The beach access is quite an exciting journey on its own and personally when I first drove up the beach with the wife and kids we were all gobsmacked as the road is the beach and on one side is the bushland and it’s residents and one the other is the beautiful ocean, that’s quite a road in itself! Gateway Discovery Tours can take a group of up to 35 persons with their 3 monster 4 x 4 passenger trucks offering this unique chance to see the places you probably would not normally venture to. An adventure for the young and old is awaiting you and it’s cheaper than you think with tours starting from as little as only $65 per person and this includes an action-packed day with lunch included (dietary options available just ask). An exploration of the inland bush tracks and the wildlife that live there with a whole lot of history to take in too. There are several war structures to see like the war bunker right at the top of the northern end of the beach and the old gunner’s concrete structure where, in WWII the soldiers would have been on guard of the

Lulu Drew ADVERTISING MANAGER Hello Readers, Another 2 weeks have passed and here we are with another great publication but this one marks a milestone in the history of The Bribie Islander.
Images by Jack Shick
When I arrived on Bribie Island back in October 2010 with my wife Selina and our 3 kids Joe, Alfie and Elly, I was thinking about a different career path other than the building industry as I am a qualified electrician by trade, a plumber, a carpenter, a cabinet maker, a wall and floor tiler, the list goes on. Still, my first job was welding trailers for a local at Ningi and then as a tiler working in the northern suburbs. Next, I was off to Caloundra as a cabinet maker for a few months until I decided to go into sales. I landed a job selling accident insurance which was a very tough gig, I then worked as a sales representative for an electrical wholesaler in Geebung until I resigned after 20 months and decided to set up a monthly newspaper back in May 2014 and The Bribie Islander was ready, born on the 1st August 2014 with issue 01 at 16 pages and here we are now with a fortnightly glossy magazine issue number 100 at 80 pages. Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. Readers, as always, enjoy issue #100. Take Care,
Richard Whetlor Editor-in-Chief

ribie Island VIEW Club has a new club banner. After 23 years of service our old banner was deemed obsolete and thanks to an anonymous member donation, we were able to enlist the help of photographer Judy Goyen and designer Cheryl Mortimer to create a modern banner that reflects who and what we are. It features a beloved Bribie pelican backed by The Glasshouse Mountains, Bribie Island Bridge and the stunning blue waters of the Pumicestone Passage.

Learning for Life sponsorship provides disadvantaged students with financial assistance, emotional support and access to learning and educational programs to help them get the most from their education. As of June 2019, VIEW Clubs sponsored 1,364 disadvantaged students nationally. Bribie Island VIEW Club currently sponsors five. Research has shown that supporting a child’s education is one of the most effective ways to help break the cycle of disadvantage. The Smith
Family’s sponsorship program enables sponsors to give directly to a child in need so they don’t miss out on the opportunity to participate fully in their education, and create a better future for themselves. There are thousands of Australian children in need of help. The Bribie Island VIEW Club will hold its final lunch meeting for 2019 on Wednesday 27th November with a Bring & Buy sale featuring Christmas themed items and foods, proceeds going to The Smith Family’s Christmas Toy & Book Appeal. The club would like to thank members of the public who supported the Smith Family by buying tickets in our latest quilt raffle which will be drawn on the day with all funds going to support our club’s LFL students.

COMMUNITY EVENT ur final Show for the year has been run and won. Despite the lack of rain over the last few months, enthusiastic orchid and foliage growers from near and far managed to bench a breathtaking blur of colours, shapes, sizes and fragrances at The Orchid House and the Indoor Bowls Club. Added to that were the various vendors with their colourful stalls with society members and the general public availing themselves of the great selection of plants and other items for sale.
O
Wrapup On The Bribie Island Orchid Society’s 2019 Spring Show By Sandy Jensen
It seemed like Mother Nature giving us the nod late Friday/Saturday with a good downpour to dampen the ground but not the spirits of our visitors with good patronage and comments like ‘what a stunning display’, ‘your benches are packed’, ‘smell that perfume’ etc. The folks in the kitchens were kept busy serving morning and afternoon teas, making sandwiches and making sure that all the vendors and volunteers were fed. Great job! Den. Chet’s Choice Champion Orchid of Show & Champion Specimen Growers — R & J Hopkins
The success of our Show was dependent on a lot of hard work, effort and support from our vendors, some from as far away as Mackay, our Society members, the general public, other Orchid Society members, our Patron Simone Wilson, Woorim Surfside Pharmacy, Gary Parsons from BIDCA (Bribie Island District Community Appeal), and by no means least our Sponsors, The Bribie Island Bowls Club, McKenzie Aged Care and Browns Mitre 10. A big thank you to all. Our Spring Show major raffle, a portion of the proceeds from which will be donated to the Vietnam Veterans Association, turned out to be a ‘family affair’ with all three prizes going to Bribie Island Orchid Society Members. The winning ticket drawn out of the box by Barry Svensson who was representing our sponsor The Bribie Island Bowls Club, was indeed his own ticket. Second Prize was won by our Treasurer, Ros Grant—duly rewarded for all her hard behind-thescenes work supporting the Show and Third Prize went to Sheron Strasser. This is a first for all three prizes to be won by our members.

The Norfolk Island Experience – it’s more that you’d expect
Y
ou may not have realised it, but over recent years Norfolk Island has begun to be appreciated for features it has always naturally possessed, yet had remained hidden to most travellers. Today, Norfolk is known as a fresh, seasonal foodie haven where food miles are counted in metres; as an unspoiled environmental playground with lush rainforests and coral filled waters; and an intriguing community with a culture and language of its own. Well known for its iconic Norfolk Island Pine trees, convict past and

incredible history, there is much to explore and enjoy on this little 8km x 5km island located 2hrs flying time from Brisbane and Sydney. In the chaos of our over-crowded lives Norfolk Island offers a peaceful, safe and unspoiled destination to either find, or get back in touch with yourself and loved ones. However, don’t for a minute think that means this is a sleepy destination! There is something for everyone to enjoy year round as Islanders host sporting, musical and special interest events, always welcoming visitors to
The Bribie Islander
There’s plenty of history with First Fleet anniversary celebrations for the 1788 British settlement, and in March 2020 a special week of events commemorating the 230th anniversary of the wrecking of HMS Sirius on Norfolk Island. The June 1856 arrival of the Islanders Bounty mutineer descendants from Pitcairn Island is celebrated each year as Anniversary or Bounty Day. The ‘Taste Norfolk’ food festival is timed to coincide with a Thanksgiving Day public holiday (yes, Norfolk celebrates this day stemming from the early Pitcairn Islanders contact with American whalers). Visiting during one of the Island’s annual events can add an extra dimension to a Norfolk Island holiday experience. It’s clear that one of the biggest myths about Norfolk is that there’s not much to do with so many departing travellers reporting that they didn’t get to see and do all on offer. You’ll find a varied number of daily and evening cafes, clubs and restaurants creating meals from local fresh produce. If you love fishing you really won’t want to miss joining a charter trip to find out why the locals call it ‘catching’ instead of ‘fishing’. Snorkelling is as easy as walking in off the beach and
Whether you visit Norfolk as a sole traveller, with a partner, family or friends, or as part of an organised (or your own) group trip, make sure to use the knowledge available from local travel agents. ‘Meeting the locals’ really is part of a Norfolk Island experience, so make sure to do so even before you travel. You’ll surely find much more than you expected on a Norfolk Island holiday!
there are many beautiful National Park rainforest walks. And of course there’s the World Heritage listed convict site at Kingston to explore by yourself or on a guided tour.

Special guests at the BIDCA Music Festival included Division One Councillor Brooke Savige, Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson, Member for Longman Terry Young and Division two Councillor Peter Flannery.
Other raffle prizes were a gift basket donated by Member for Longman Terry Young, a twenty dollar voucher for Wright’s Fruit Shop and a number of hand crafted wooden items donated by BIDCA. Last to be drawn were the two major prizes which were a half day BBQ Boat hire donated through the generosity of Robyn and Brendan of Bribie Island Boat Charters and a new acoustic guitar which was donated by a BIDCA member. The lucky door prize was a very well stocked gift basket from Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson who, along with Emma Dyson, did a tremendous job selling the raffle tickets.
During the time between performances by the really talented artists, there were raffle draws and this resulted in those who were lucky enough to have their ticket drawn receiving some very worthwhile prizes including a fifty dollar “Wish Card” generously donated by Woolworths, family passes to the Caboolture Warplane and Flight Heritage Museum and also the Tavas Aviation Museum, Vouchers donated

Birds Queensland outing to Bribie 2019 By Anne Bradley
M
embers of Birds Queensland have visited Bribie 35 times since 1975. They go to a wide variety of habitats on the island to take a census of the birds: Buckley’s Hole, Red Beach, the road to the sewage works (off First Avenue), Kakadu bird hide, Wright’s Creek, White Patch, Star Marina and Bibimulya. It is a matter of honour for them to be able
NATURE
to see over 100 different species in a day. This year and last, BIEPA has been invited to participate and I have gone along, last year with only one other member, this year with several. They make us very welcome and even supply us with good quality binoculars for the day. I am enormously impressed by the ability of members of the group to spot birds that I would never have found by myself. Believe me, it is
Kerry’s
amazing! Sometimes, they identify the calls first and then find the birds. Often, I can’t even see them when they are pointed out to me. This year, over 90 different species were identified in the first three hours and 121 during the day, with 6 others heard but not seen. The highlight for many people was the Common Sandpiper that was spotted at Star Marina towards the
end of the day. This is not at all a common bird here, despite its name. Of course, this was one of the birds that I failed to see, despite the earnest attempts of other people to point it out to me. It was a very rewarding and busy day but one doesn’t have to stay for all of it, one can ‘slope off’ at any time. Do come along next year, it is a great day out.

Faulty Towers comes to Bribie!
EVENT
By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary
A
lthough it’s over 40 years old, Fawlty Towers is still regarded as one of the best BBC sitcoms ever made. There were only ever 12 episodes produced between 1975 and 1979, but you can still watch them today. The show starred John Cleese as the constantly frustrated hotelier Basil Fawlty, Prunella Scales as the bossy, condescending Sybil Fawlty, and Andrew Sachs as the hapless Spanish waiter Manuel. I know many of us believe this show was actually based on fact, having visited England, but I’m reliably told it is meant to be fiction - even though the character of Basil was inspired by
Donald Sinclair, the owner of a Torquay Hotel where John Cleese had stayed with the Monty Python troupe. It’s been awhile since many of us have heard the dulcet tones of Basil Fawlty echoing around his majestic Torquay Hotel. Who can forget Manuel constantly asking ‘Que’ or Basil’s ‘Always reminds me of somebody machinegunning a seal.’ And about Sybil’s laughter, ‘Please don’t alarm yourself, it’s only my wife laughing.’ And the way the Fawlty Towers sign was altered at the beginning of each episode! Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal to End Polio is bringing the longest running and

he New Zealand Ladies group meet at the Bribie Sports Club at Bongaree,10.30am on the third Wednesday of the month. It is very casual and a wonderful gathering of ex-pats, from New Zealand. Some of us have been here for many years, while others are relatively newcomers. Getting together every month for twenty years is quite an achievement and we have lots of laughter and fun. We would like to encourage any more ‘Kiwi ladies’ out there, to come along and enjoy the friendship and know there are plenty of us hidden in the crowds on and around our island paradise.
New Zealand Ladies 20th Anniversary
We would like to boost our numbers, as we guess there are always new people coming to live on the Island to enjoy our weather and lifestyle. November is our anniversary month of 20 years, which will be followed by a Christmas gathering in early December. For any more information please contact Lynne on 0422 313 584.

Home care provider gaining a great reputation on the island

ome Instead Senior Care, Bribie and Caboolture provide inhome services to assist seniors to remain safely and independently in their own homes. They are gaining a great reputation on Bribie for providing high-quality home care services, at the time that you choose and matching the CAREGiver to your needs and preferences. Home Instead is also an approved Home Care Package provider, which can mean you get services at no cost to you. Jodi Doe who heads the local team on the island, states “We have a large team of CAREGivers that live locally, which makes such a difference and means we are so reliable and flexible. We design the services with you, so you get to choose the services you receive, at the time you want them, with the CAREGiver you were expecting… No surprises or disappointments…”. “I meet so many people on Bribie who are not getting the services they need to remain safe and
independent. There are services available, you just might need to know your how to navigate the system to get them…”. Some additional words of wisdom from Jodi “If you are receiving the entry-level CHSP services and feel you may need slightly more home help, please don’t wait, contact My Aged Care to discuss being re-assessed and get a Home Care Package (HCP). A subsidised HCP can provide up to 16 hours a week of services, but don’t wait until you are desperate, as there are waiting times, especially to receive the higher-level packages.” If you need any help accessing any of the home care services, or with working out what services you may be entitled to, Jodi or one of the friendly Home Instead team would be glad to help, or point you in the right direction. If you want to choose the services you receive, at a time that suits you, with the CAREGiver of your choice… Please contact Home Instead on 3482 0800.
If you are over 65 you may be eligible to receive Government subsidised Home Care services to assist you to remain safely and independently at home. Services range from the entry level Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), that provides assistance with basic cleaning, shopping and transport, to the more comprehensive Home Care Packages (HCP). A HCP recipient can receive between 4 and 16 hours a week of services designed around what you require and need to remain living at home. To register contact My Aged Care on: 1800 200 422 or myagedcare.gov.au Home Instead has local CAREGivers that live on Bribie Island and we will personally match the right carer and services to your preferences. If you would like any assistance with any of these processes, or to find out more information, please call the friendly Home Instead team.

ROTARY
Teacher in a Box! By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary
O
ne of my family’s favourite poets, Robert Frost, said, ‘I am not a teacher, but an awakener.’ Likewise a paraphrased quote from Plutarch says ‘education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire’.
These eloquent quotes are all very well for people in developed countries who have access to so many educational resources, but how do we educate, awaken, or light a burning desire to learn for people in remote areas of developing countries such as PNG and Africa? As part of its commitment to basic education, one of Rotary’s six causes, Rotary District 9600 is providing the ‘Teacher in a Box’ program, and training in its use, to people in remote areas.
26
NO, we are not packaging teachers in boxes and sending them to developing countries, whereupon they spring forth to work their magic. We are actually thinking outside the box, as well as inside, to achieve our aims. What some might call lateral thinking.
Teacher in a Box (TIB) uses re-purposed laptops, which act as both a browser and a server, to provide offline access to over 10,000 educational and vocational videos which are stored in the system. By connecting the TIB laptop with a projector and speakers, a teacher is able to provide a complete lesson to a classroom. The mini router, that comes with the TIB kit, means that it can also be accessed by any Wi-Fi enabled device for selfpaced learning. TIB is the brainchild of Jeanette Johnstone from the Rotary Club of Paddington, Queensland. Following a visit to Tanzania and Zanzibar in 2012, she recognised the need for educational resources that didn’t depend on the internet which was not only unreliable, but expensive, in many parts of Africa. Jeanette met Patrick

Charging an iphone in the Western Province of PNG Hackett, a volunteer with Computers 4 Learning, another Rotary Project, which comes under Rotary’s Donation in Kind program. Jeanette and Patrick formed a partnership and they stripped and cleaned donated laptops, uploaded thousands of educational videos, lessons, books and accompanying resources and connected the laptop to a small router. The information on this laptop can be shared to as many as 100 other devices. The TIB Project continues to grow and has been invaluable to schools in Liberia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. Recently, Jeanette and some of her fellow Club members visited our Club and demonstrated the system. I was able to connect 2 iPhones and my iPad to the system instantly and had access to thousands of free educational and training manuals. Jeanette explained that they are now using Remote Area
Community Hotspot for Education and Learning (RACHEL) as a content provider for the TIB units. You can find a list of the RACHEL modules already available at racheloffline. org. This now means that additional content can be added prior to sending the laptop, or added locally by the users. Over the past few years our Bribie Club has received district grants to purchase a number of TIB laptops and provide them to Rotary Clubs in PNG, Nauru and the Solomon Islands. Every March the incoming Presidents from these Clubs come to Bribie Island to receive training for their presidential year. They are given a TIB kit and provided with training on how to use the system. To me, one of the ‘apparent’ problems with the TIB kit was the lack of electricity needed to charge the laptops; however, my concerns were alleviated when I saw a photo of a man from the Western Province of PNG charging
Dr Russ Stephenson is ready for work after solar charging his laptop in PNG his iPhone with a solar panel during a 4 hour walk to the next village. Also, I have read that satellite charging is available to remote areas and that solar panels are being placed on the roofs of schools. Yet another problem solved.
In our developed world we take internet access and readily available electricity for granted. So this is such an inspiring innovation for rural villages and countries where there is limited, or no, internet access. Teacher in a Box is making
a huge and positive impact in places where there are few classroom resources or teachers with very little training. In closing, I am drawn back to my favourite poet, Robert Frost, who also wrote the famous poem ‘The Road Not Taken’– or to many – ‘The Road
Less Travelled’. I feel the ‘Teacher in a Box’ program is perhaps indicative of Frost’s poem where many people, never given the chance before, are being given an opportunity to take that road. A road to success and happiness – the one less travelled by. And, that can make all the difference!

said it wasn’t too late for Queensland schools and centres to join the program and enter the draw to win. “Our SunSmart Program is free, easy to join, and we have a new search tool on our website for organisations who are unsure of their current SunSmart status,” Ms McMillan said. “When schools or centres join the program, they will receive a SunSmart sign and curriculum resources to help support the continual education of sun safe behaviors. Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with more than 3900 people
diagnosed with melanoma each year. “I urge all Queensland primary schools and centres to help us protect Queensland’s next generation against harmful sun exposure that can lead to skin cancer later in life,” Ms. McMillan said. “Teaching sun safe practices to children throughout their learning years will help shape healthy long-term habits.” Competition winners will be announced during National Skin Cancer Action Week (November 17-23). Milestone Arrives O
n November 2nd 2009, Forrest Airport Shuttle Transfers – more commonly referred to as Bribie FAST Shuttle – began servicing the Bribie Island, Sandstone Point and Ningi Areas with services to Brisbane Airport. The company started out with only 2 vehicles, this has now increased to 6, comprising of 4 medium size people movers and 2 mini buses. Over the years we have expanded our coverage to include Beachmere and most recently Elimbah, Caboolture, Morayfield, Bellmere and parts of Burpengary. The 10 years has seen over 45,000 bookings received, with passenger numbers approximately topping 65,000. The first 18 months saw the company operate on a manual system but as numbers grew it became apparent that a computerised system was the only way to go.
The family run business originally started operations with Owner Garry, his wife Bev and Son Chris, but now has a total staff compliment of 13! It is the loyalty and dedication of all our staff that has been greatly instrumental in the Business being as successful as it is, and this fact cannot be acknowledged enough, well done team! We offer 24-hour service 7 days a week, 364 days a year (we are closed on Christmas day only) but stress we do not run empty and this is why bookings are essential.
As we are getting busier, we ask that bookings generally must be made no later than 24 hours in advance to be safe. We recognise and accept emergencies can happen at very short notice, and we strive to accommodate these as best we can, but no guarantee can be given to passenger preferences for collection. Hopefully we can see out the next 10 years in much the same way as our first 10 years and continue on the same growth pattern that we have experienced in the past and thank you to all our valued customers over this time.
Guiding local families through their final goodbyes for generations. Let our family guide you on this journey.

R
ecently BIDCA announced they were no longer able to take on and organise the Annual Bribie Island NYE event. Whilst this is a hard decision for them, they were looking for another community driven body to take this event on. Bribie Island Bowls Club are proud to announce they are coming to the rescue and are excited to be able to bring the island this event with Market Stalls, food trucks, kid’s activities, entertainment and of course 8.30 pm Fireworks. A big thank you also goes to Div1 councillor Brooke Savige for helping organise
some funding for their annual community event. It is due to her hard work that the bowls club can also take on this event. More information and flyers will be coming soon so keep an eye out for them đ&#x;™‚ If you would like to apply for a Market Stall please go to https://www.facebook. com/bribieislandbowlsclub/
High Tea – High Excitement Good Company Singers
O
ver 100 islanders packed the Bribie Community Hall on Saturday 26th October, for a wonderful afternoon of High Tea and Harmony. The all ticket event, which was a sellout, was well received and enjoyed immensely by all who attended. We regret that many missed out due to number constraints. The entertainment by Good Company singers was of an exceptionally high standard, the vast array of food was very tasty indeed. Plaudits a-many after the show was testament to the enjoyment of the afternoon.
Some remarked that it was one of the best events held on Bribie. Keep an eye out for future events.

y friend and I had spent a delightful evening chatting and laughing, perhaps imbibing just a little more than we should, but this made us all the more ready for a good night’s sleep.
About 2 am I was rudely awoken by a tremendous bang which I assumed, at first, was thunder. However, on waking properly, I soon realised that this was no ordinary thunder, and rushed to check on my friend to reassure myself that she was unhurt. We both looked around in the

dark, but it was only when we entered the computer room, put on the lights, and gazed out of the window, we saw that an immense tree had uprooted itself and fallen through the roof and ceiling of both the computer room and my bedroom. I do not know why I had not immediately realised what had occurred on waking, as branches of the tree were on my pillow just two or three feet from where my head would have been!
I rang the number that I was given, and the assessor said he would come around that day. A couple of hours later he was there, and after one look at the damage, told me it was definitely an insurance job, and also said he strongly suggested that I continued to sleep in the lounge room and avoid going into my bedroom, or in fact, any part of the house where the roof was damaged. I decided to finish my night’s sleep in the lounge room on the settee. Certainly, there was nothing to be done that night. The next morning my friend and I discussed the night’s events and I began to realise how fortunate I had been, escaping injury or even death! Later that morning my friend left for the safety of her own home and I rang my Insurance Company. Fortunately, I

barbeque my son and son-in-law had built for us and which had been the site of many a family feast. The next day the “tradies” or angels in orange vests arrived and began work. The whole of the roof had to be removed as the original roof was fibro, and replaced by modern steel roofing. In the interim, the tarpaulin was placed and tied down to prevent rain from getting into the house. Guess what? It did rain, and further damage was done to the ceiling. My orange angels discovered holes in my built-in wardrobe, large damp areas in my ceiling, and other cracks, but reassured me that all would be as good as new, if not even better when they had finished. Going way beyond the call of duty, amongst other things, my angels not only removed the tree from my roof but sawed it into logs for my neighbour who stacked it for the Arctic winter he lives in expectation of arriving in semi-tropical Queensland. My angels also picked me up when I fell backwards going up my drive and gave my head a nasty bump. They plastered and painted

2020 YEAR We are now into the 5th month of the new financial year. If you missed any claims for your 2019 return, now is the time to make sure you don’t again for the 2020 year. Motor Vehicle log books recording work related travel require details of the whole year if work travel is less than 5000 km. Greater than 5000 business km needs only 12 consecutive weeks but you need your receipts. Don’t forget your phone bills if you wish to claim a %. Tools receipts and PPE or uniform purchase receipts are all required to be kept. Get a couple of folders to put all these dockets and documents in ready for the end of year. Or have a look at some of the online/phone apps that can assist you with your record keeping. Taking photos of your expenses can be a good idea especially if the receipt is on that paper where the print fades quickly. If you were charged medicare levy surcharge, maybe it’s time to look at private health funds. The exemption starts from the day you join so even now you may still have a penalty for part of this year. Sub Office Carolyn now lives on Bribie and has opened a sub office at her home at Bongaree whilst maintaining her main office at Woodford. My Dearest Island fam,
I
t’s been a while! I’m sorry for not writing to you in the last couple of issues. So much has been going on and there is a lot to tell you. So let’s begin… First of all, I’ve had a bit of a job change recently which has been super exciting and captivating. The hotel where I work has some magnificent gardens that I very much admire. Often while I’m on my shift I’ll take moments to absorb the views and the singing flowers. Does the heart good. The gardens are kept beautiful, though, only through the love and care of Natacha our gardener. And boy does she put a dozen wheelbarrows full of love and care into her plants. It’s a lot of responsibility looking after living things that respond to even just the slightest changes in their routine, so when one afternoon Natacha asked if I would like the opportunity to take care of her plant babies while she goes away I was immediately both excited and scared. Of course! “I would love that opportunity; it would be an honour!” I exclaimed in response. But my heart and thoughts were racing with doubt too. I knew I wanted to do it because I have a deep love for gardens, however taking on a job that big is a whole new level of green thumb. Nevertheless, I agreed to take on this responsibility and got the training. I really wanted to impress our gardener with my attention 40
to the plants and show that I care. Which made me worry a lot about if I was doing a good job or not. I even did homework at night revising certain elements to plant care. As well as learning this new skill and taking on this responsibility my family and I were also preparing for my sister’s wedding in Cairns which would happen just when my plant sitting finalised. So a lot of my emotions have been put into important things of late, hence not getting to talk to you all much. Which makes me sad. I’m sorry! Anyway, all in all, I’m here to say it went better than well and the garden is looking happy. But I’m sure all the plants and flowers will be glad to have their Mumma back home! Only thing is, I’m not sure I want to go back to what I was doing before! Oops. I mean, I had a passion for nature before, but now I have a taste of doing it as a profession and I want more! So there’s a certain path unfolding there… So now it is a cruisy Monday-on-Bribie night, and my parents and I just got back from Cairns: much wedding festivity has been had! We all stayed

at a northern beach called Palm Cove. Yes, it is true. I traded Bribie for Palm Cove for a while and thoroughly enjoyed it. Please don’t think I’m a trader!! It feels weird to be in two different places in one day separated by a flight, but a privilege it is all the same. It’s definitely a tropical paradise, Australia showing off or something I think. Different from Bribie in its atmosphere and mountains close by the sea. The water is not as nice as ours and there is the potential for scaly and stingy things in the brackish water. But the palms and soft grass landing right upon the sandy shore is divine. Lots of places to eat and live music is everywhere. One thing I wish Bribie had is more live music flooding the streets, especially at night. But you know what they say, there’s no place like home. I hope that I have planted seeds from Bribie Island (spiritually speaking of course) on the Esplanade of Palm Cove and brought
A portion of William’s Esplanade: tropical plants everywhere!
Palm Cove at Sunrise back something from the Cove to plant on Bribie so we can all share in the goodness of the two different places. Crosspollination of cultures I suppose you could call it. Travelling has made me fall in love with the land of Australia all over again and makes me hungry to see more of its rugged and varied beauty. We live in a sacred place and our people are as unique as the land. We must nurture each other like a gardener nurture’s her plants and share our territory with those willing to respect it. So much more to catch up on Islanders, I’ll do my best to make our writings not as far apart anymore!
All the best Nikita P.s Make some happy memories with your loved ones this coming weekend. I’ve realised how much memories are important; for they give life to, well, new life. Stay safe!

There is, but the answer is not simple, nor is it the same for everyone! First step is to listen to your body again and stop supressing pain - what you feel you can heal. Red-necked Stints at Toorbul
Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis By Marj Webber
R
ed-necked stints are the smallest migratory shorebirds to visit our beaches. They are very common and descend onto our sandy beaches in flocks to mingle with other waders roosting and feeding. Kakadu Hide, the
46
beach at Buckley’s Hole and the roost at Toorbul are places where you are likely to see them. They start arriving in late August to early October and remain for the summer, so by now they should all be back from their breeding grounds in the Northern Hemisphere.
www.thebribieislander.com.au
The Bribie Islander
Red-necked Stints are tiny birds just a little larger than Sparrows. They are 13-16 cm in length and weigh just 25-40 g. Their non-breeding plumage is brown-grey on heads and backs and whitish underneath. Legs and bills are short and bodies are chunky. Male and female are similar in appearance. Their smallness distinguishes them from other shorebirds. When roosting, flocks frequently burst into flight and
then come back to their roosting spot. When feeding they dart about looking for food pecking at worms, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants and insects on wetlands and mudflats at low tide both day and night. They feed in flocks and must eat huge quantities of food before tackling their marathon flight to the north. During breeding in the tundra, they eat mostly insects.
Compare Red-necked Stints with the larger Bar-tailed Godwits
Habitats are quite diverse. As well as frequenting beaches and sand flats they can also be found in inland freshwater wetlands. The southern Summer is spent in Australia, SE Asia and NZ and during late autumn they fly off to the Arctic north to breed. Before leaving our shores, many have already developed their breeding plumage. Feathers on the throat neck and breast become a reddish colour – hence the name Red-necked Stint. Their journey takes them along the shores of the Yellow Sea where they stop to rest and eat to replenish their strength for the rest of the journey. They are known to fly 5000 km or more between stops. When reaching the Siberian Tundra or Western Alaska up to 15000 km from Aust they make their nests on damp moss and lichen.

HISTORY Bribie Bridge building 1962 In 1963 Australia was largely an agricultural economy and primary produce accounted for 77% of Australia’s commodity exports. Also, in 1963 the Commonwealth Marriage Act came into force legitimising children born out of wedlock by the subsequent marriage of their parents. In 2019 we have different issues occupying our minds, including thoughts about an additional bridge, or a replacement bridge, and when and where it might happen.
Quiet holiday destination In 1963 the resident population of Bribie Island was less than 600 people, with thousands more coming for weekends and holidays.

Next year Australia will be celebrating the so-called “Discovery” of Australia by James Cook, 250 years ago in 1770. 48
The arrival of Matthew Flinders on the sloop “Norfolk” in 1799 was perhaps the most significant date for Bribie Island, when he was the first white man to land here. Perhaps the most significant social and economic event since then was the building of the Bribie Island Bridge. When the bridge opened on October 19th 1963 life on Bribie Island, and in Queensland, Australia, and

But Bribie Island was still a quiet and peaceful holiday destination. There had been much speculation about building a bridge to Bribie Island for over 30 years. In those days, even with a small population, two Councillors were representing Bribie on Caboolture Shire Council and the community worked hard creating what they needed with their own volunteer efforts. Steamship excursions from Brisbane to Bribie had carried thousands of people

Bridge Toll Gates 1963 for weekends and holidays since 1912, but this had stopped in 1953. A car ferry service had become popular since 1947, after the military built a road from Caboolture in WW2, and motor car ownership increased. Politicians talked about a bridge to Bribie during election campaigns in the late 1950s and had considered having it paid for by Developers, in exchange for land on the island. This did not eventuate, but in 1961 a Contract was awarded for a bridge to be constructed at a cost of 358,000 pounds.
The 10-shilling Toll was a significant cost and came as a complete surprise. Residents and Visitors were very disappointed, and it impacted growth and development for some time. Better roads and increased car ownership had led to population growth on both the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, but this did not immediately eventuate on Bribie Island. In 1963 the 10 Shilling Bridge Toll would have paid the cost of Petrol to drive
a car from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and back, and you could buy a pound of Beef for 2 shillings. The Bribie Bridge toll was 10 times that on the Hornibrook Highway, and was the most expensive road toll in Australia Land prices and rates on Bribie had risen significantly in anticipation of change, but the expensive Bridge Toll lasted 12 years and was finally removed in 1975 when the bridge had been paid for by
Bribie residents were outraged at the expensive toll and threatened to boycott or disrupt the opening ceremony. The opening day was however a big success, with large crowds and processions of floats, horse drawn carts, vintage cars, marching bands and hundreds of vehicles driving to the island for the first time. It was so busy that the bridge was declared “OneWay” on to Bribie in the morning, and then “OneWay” off in the afternoon. This photo, taken on the opening day, shows the two lanes of vehicles coming onto the island. If you look carefully at the photo you will see many things that are different today.……. footpath handrail, overhead lights, sealed road …… how many more differences can you see? First cars cross bridge 1963
The Bridge was opened by Premier Frank Nicklin on 19th October 1963 and was the longest precast prestressed concrete bridge in Australia. The complex construction had involved driving 206 piles, weighing 12 ton each, laying 38 spans of concrete beams to span the 832-metre length. Just weeks before the opening an expensive Toll was announced, to be paid by all vehicles coming to the island. ISSUE 100 | 8 November 2019

HISTORY CONTINUED

The Past …and Future
An Aerial photo of the mainland end of the Bridge, taken on the opening day, shows the huge number of buses, cars and people that gathered for the event, with the Toll Gates in the divided road surrounded by people waiting to walk across for the first time. The “Bribie Star” local newspaper of the day produced a special complimentary souvenir edition documenting some fascinating history of the island by many of the pioneer residents. There had been an expectation that Bribie residents would not have to pay the toll, and eventually they did get a small concession. Books of tickets for multiple crossings could be purchased at a small discount and there was an exemption for Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Royal Mail and Government vehicles. 14,000 cars crossed the bridge in the first week it was open, paying 7000 pounds to the two toll collectors, who were each on an annual salary of 5000 pounds. Many of the new visitors were very disappointed with inadequate parking facilities and amenities on the island, and may never have returned. In the first two years of the new bridge over 300,000 cars crossed over, but population growth was much lower than anticipated reaching just 2000 by 1975 when the toll was lifted. 50

50 years of Bridge Anniversaries For the 10th Anniversary in 1973 the toll was still in force, but by the 20th Anniversary in 1983 the toll had been lifted and a major celebration was held in conjunction with the “Bribie Island Festival” organised by the Lions Club, who sold “Passports” to the island as a fundraiser. In 1988 a “Silver Jubilee Carnival” was held for 25 years, together with a special edition of the local newspaper, and a souvenir T-shirt was produced. The 30-year anniversary in 1993 was held in conjunction with a “Bribie Aquatic Festival”. I had only just come to live on Bribie Island in 2004 and knew nothing at all about Bribie History, or the significance of the Bridge, but I organised a fundraising walk for Rotary in which several teams of 10 people each walk over the bridge and back 4 times. So, each sponsored team walked 40 kilometres and raised $4000 for Rotary causes. As a result of organising this event I met Stella Ray, a very long-term resident of the island, who sparked my interest in the unique history of this island community. In 2008 I founded the Bribie Island Historical Society, and in 2013 the Society placed a 50-year commemorative bronze plaque on a stone beside the bridge, and

There has been much talk in recent years about the age and limitations of our 56-year-old bridge, and the need for a second or replacement bridge. There are some who say “Bring back a Bridge Toll” and other who say “Blow the bridge up” and return to the peaceful days of water access only. In four years’ time in 2023 the Bridge will be 60 years old, and will still be very much in use, whatever decisions are made about the location and timing of a second bridge. As there is currently no shared community “Vision” for what Bribie should be like in the future, it will just go on drifting and developing to become like every other coastal town. It is a pity that the people of Bribie don’t demand more of their representatives, to make sure that it remains the unique place that has made it so different for so long.
MORE BRIBIE HISTORY The Historical Society have monthly public meetings at the RSL Club on the second Wednesday of each month commencing at 6;30pm. with interesting guest speakers on a wide range of topics. At the next meeting on Wednesday 13th November I will be giving a presentation titled “Who really discovered the Brisbane River”. Come along. ur very first extended weekend photoshoot was held at lovely Tin Can Bay with 16 of our keen photographers attending. Some of us booked in earlier in the week and stayed for a longer period. We were invited to attend the Tin Can Bay Photography Club meeting held on the third Wednesday of the month. Gordon and Marj attended, were made most welcome and met many of their members. Friday night was when the activities began at the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club. Members from both clubs 52
met for a “get to know you” drinks on the deck and dinner afterwards. This was a very friendly and enjoyable night. The host club had an interesting itinerary mapped out for the rest of the weekend. On Saturday morning there was a “Hunt and Shoot” where participants were given 8 subjects to photograph in order and within a certain time. After photographing the first four, a scrumptious morning tea at Crab Creek was provided by the Tin Can Bay ladies. After morning tea, we dodged showers while trying to photograph our final four subjects. Photos were downloaded to be judged at lunchtime. An Astrophotography shoot was proposed for Saturday night, but a huge hailstorm intervened so instead the

crew met up for dinner at the Marina Bar and Grill. The rain was much needed in Tin Can Bay. On Sunday morning some members went for an environmental photoshoot on the wallum Wildflower Walk photographing mainly wildflowers and birds. There was ample time during the weekend for us to explore some of the surrounding attractions such as Dolphin feeding at Barnacles Café, Searys Creek, Rainbow Beach, Carlo Sand Blow and Inskip
Point. Some members stayed on for a few more days. The Bribie Island Photography Club meets on the fourth Monday of each month except December at 7pm in the boardroom at the back of the Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive. New members are always welcome. The first few meetings are free. If you wish to come along ring Gordon at 3408 2649 or Gail at 0419638865 or just turn up on the night.

MENTAL HEALTH
Human Instincts In The Modern World - Part 2 By Veronica Mercer, Mental Health Accredited Social Worker
“We exist in a bizarre combination of Stone Age emotions, medieval beliefs, and god-like technology.”
doing in serving the needs of others.
Edward O. Wilson
O
ur instinctive behaviours were adaptive during prehistoric times (they enhanced our ability to survive and reproduce), we see that some of our instinctive emotions (mental health) have become serious impediments and may threaten our very survival.
Social Anxiety:
Human instinct is to fit in by being connected to others. In today’s world we have evolved an obsession with what others think of us, a craving for social approval and admiration, and a paralysing fear of being disliked. If we look at today’s mental health issues, depression, social anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) these may be instinctual behaviours from our ancient ancestors, and how they dealt with survival in the world of their times.
Depression: In today’s world, depression can dictate withdrawal from day to day life and these experiencing this disorder are often totally consumed with the traits and behaviours that would result. In a highly structured, oppressed society, there are clear definitions between the leaders and those that serve them. Stress and fear may have given people the need to separate themselves from the work they were 54
www.thebribieislander.com.au
Often depression affects motivation, energy and sleep and in a world filled with violence and uncertainty our ancestors may have experienced times when there was little to look forward/work towards. This has evolved to the more dominating type of disorder today. This disorder leaves many people fearful of being singled out in a social situation. This may have prevented our ancestors from challenging the leaders of their tribe. The traits of social anxiety would have benefited our ancestors in times when there was a formal hierarchy of social ranking. Our world today tends to have less structured social ranking, and the opportunity is there to move up the social rank. Survival instincts may cause challenges when we try to improve our standing, and our instincts may be encouraging us to keep our distance and not challenge those higher ranked, whether socially or in employment situations.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): OCD behaviours possibly stem from a mother’s instinctual way of preparing for protecting their young. By maintaining safe and clean surroundings, they are keeping their children as safe as possible. In ancient times there was no knowledge of germs, or the ability to live in conditions we dictate in today. This disorder can be a hinderance to those with severe cases and has
The Bribie Islander
evolved to be far removed from the initial drive to provide a safe home for our young. Mental health disorders can take over a person’s life and make them prisoners to the disorder and its behaviours. Examining how these behaviours could have been vital under the living conditions of our ancestors, gives us a better idea of what drives and creates them, and may assist in improving treatment. Instincts can be good and bad. A good instinct is self-protective, having a feeling someone might be a threat or a new friend may not be very trustworthy. A bad instinct could be an urge to cause harm to others, usually out of hurt or resentment. Human cultural contexts have changed but our brains and bodies have not. We still have the same fears and desires as our ancestors, but now those instincts are out of sync with life conditions. - Wishing you all good mental wellbeing - Veronica The evolution of our society is sometimes in conflict with the instinct of the individual. HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY Eyes That Tell A 1000 Words A MILLION (1966), LION IN WINTER (1968) GOODBYE MR CHIPS (1969), to name just a few of Peter’s films.

elaxing in comfortable armchairs, Peter’s extravagant voice tempts me to close my eyes and just enjoy the sound: “I recently returned from a year’s sabbatical in Ireland where I designed and helped build a new house and also wrote a journal. I was trained as a journalist, so my writing is immediate, not premeditated. The house we had wasn’t big enough for us with our daughters Katie and Pat growing up. There is a Chinese proverb ‘BUILD A HOUSE AND BECOME A PHILOSOPHER!’ “Not sure about that, but it was a great learning curve, mostly the frustrations when everything goes completely wrong: workmen, materials – the lot. And then all of a sudden it goes right again.

is broken. O’Toole has challenged the old bear and got away with it. The relief grows a little strained when Peter makes it plain that he’s no respecter of personalities and insists on treating Preminger like any other human being. By Helly Kemp
O
TTO PREMINGER is in full bellow, roaring up and down his film set of thriller ROSEBUD (1975), blasting an actor here, flattening an actress there and terrifying cameramen everywhere. Just one person is totally unaffected. In a corner, his star, British stage and screen icon of Irish descent, PETER O’TOOLE, watches with detached amusement as the yelling builds into a crescendo and in the total silence that follows Peter lets fall a simple request: “Excuse me,” says the 41-year-old innocently, “But could you speak up? I can’t hear you very well.” The ear-splitting roar that follows is of laughter this time. Tension on set
56
www.thebribieislander.com.au
I am not surprised, as it is not the first time I am interviewing him. “Scared? Who’s scared? And why should I be?” he declares, when I hesitatingly mention Preminger’s reputation as a monster. “Nonsense. I absolutely adore working with him. I’ll do another picture with him any time, any place. As for dictating my performance – he simply never tries. He gives me complete freedom to do it my way.”
“Don’t forget. It’s all most solid. I worked physically on it. My normal work is very insubstantial, very abstract. But when you deal with granite and you make a mistake, it’s there forever. I ended each day physically exhausted, which was lovely. I was just unskilled labour: dug, fetched, carried things and built a pump house with a pump. I was as proud of it as if I’d built the Taj Mahal, because I built it. And I was in charge of the drains, so my wife (Sian Phillips, as brilliant an actress as her husband) christened me, ‘Drain Brain.’” He grins wickedly, like an imp waiting to detonate a firecracker. His long, sensitive hands are a bit bashed around by the Irish building-site and his passion for archaeological hunts he joins at the drop of a hat is all encompassing. You expect a snort from the unsentimental Mr O’Toole, yet a selfdescribed romantic, as he enthuses:
A
nd O’Toole certainly did it his way, when together with OMAR SHARIF, they both set and dominated the genre of the romantic and drama movies of the sixties after both were launched to international stardom in their breath-taking performances in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962). Then came BECKET (1964), HOW TO STEAL

“The greatest pleasure in the world is to pick up a shovel and potter about, especially in a barren part of South America, completely ignored by the archaeological world, where we discovered enormous evidence of a complete culture. “I’m a dabbler. I dabble in hundreds of things - other than my own work, I hope. If you can keep your feet in this age and your mind in another, that’s the trick.” It sounds right coming from an actor whose roles have included so many madmen and dreamers.
F
or a time O’Toole was more associated in the public eye with drinking and hell-raising, but nothing could eclipse his artistic achievements with that brilliance as an actor. He received eight Academy Award Nominations, but only one Academy Award that will be presented by Meryl Streep in 2002, an HONORARY ACADEMY AWARD FOR HIS BODY OF WORK. Nothing annoys O’Toole more than mentioning his hell-raiser days with mates Richard Harris, Richard

Yes? And while filming I used to go into a lot of bars at three in the morning.” He was once arrested for drunk and disorderly behavior with a 10-shilling fine. But those days will end abruptly in the 70s, as will Peter’s 20-year-long marriage. Doctors will perform life-saving stomach cancer surgery, removing his pancreas, parts of his stomach and yards of intestines, thus turning him into an insulindependent diabetic. His health had been damaged by years of heavy drinking and chain-smoking.
B

A
nd it was at 17 when Connemara born Peter wrote in his journal: ‘I will not be a common man because it is my right to be an uncommon one.’ Now, hearing those words, Peter shudders and shakes his head in dismay. “The arrogance of that statement!” There is a smile and a nostalgic pause. “They were heady years, those late forties. All of us were busy scribbling. A lot of it was rubbish.” But that statement wasn’t. At 17 Peter O’Toole had predicted the future of his incredible life over the next 64 years. Fishing REPORT
By Vin Donovan
I
sn’t it funny how all the different party’s in politics and all its members seem to all have some type of plan for the future of Australia and Australians? Generally, it’s something to do with infrastructure, medical/hospitals, schools, jobs, cost of living etc. Depending on which side of the table you sit, well that’s everyone’s right to vote for whichever political party that you fancy. I mean nowadays the ballot form is folded over ten times to fit all those parties on. The fishing, hemp, lifestyle party comes first for me, but sadly in reality that’s probably not going to happen lol!! All jokes aside what do these political parties actually represent for the people, and what’s their future Great eating fish snapper, pearlies, sweetlip, cod and Moses perch.

plans going to bring for this country. Obviously, we need a government to put the people first in issues relating to any cultural, religious, environmental and certain problems that affect the community. The biggest problem facing us all as humans is climate change. It affects every single living being on earth. More forest destruction, mining, fossil fuel burning and more agricultural/ industrial runoff means mother nature is taking an absolute beating more than ever before. Act now or maybe face an uncertain future. Over the last few months has seen more and more people get involved in the extinction rebellion movement which I fully advocate and agree with. I believe that this movement and these protests are truly needed. Sometimes you need to disrupt the flow of society and life to actually get the point across of how dire the earths actual scientific analysis is from scientists, professors, meteorological experts and climate change experts across the world. It truly seems ridiculous that these expert opinions and statistics aren’t taken more seriously from a

somewhat ignorant and misguided Government. Hopefully, in the future, this Government can think more seriously about doing everything it can to work on trying to restore mother nature and look at all possible ways to try and change or reduce our footprint on the earth. Anyways back to what’s getting caught around the Bribie Island and Moreton Bay marine park. The summer whiting and flatties are really on the chew over the last few weeks with most of the passage and ocean beach producing the goods. Live blood or beach worms for the whiting. Try anywhere up the surf beach from the start of skirmish point right up to the northern access track. Look for any gutters or whiting melon holes on the incoming tide. Early morning and late afternoon high tides are the best time
REGULAR FEATURE to fish. Southeast winds are also the best winds to fish. Nearly any sandbank or creek mouth up the passage are all worth a fish and some beautiful fish over the 40cm mark are getting caught. The flatties have been widespread with the area from Caloundra bar right down to Buckley’s ledge are producing the goods. Live baits, pilchards and lures working well. Generally, you will catch flatties on really any tide but usually the last two hours of a run out tide is the best bet. As the water temperature warms up the mangrove jacks, cod, trevally and javelin fish will start to bite. Live baits, flesh baits, plastics and hardbodies. Try up around the rock bars and deep holes in most of the creeks Coochin, Ningi and Elimba seem to be the better creeks to target the bigger fish.
Quality sand crabs from the bay Out on the reef snapper, sweetlip, cod, husser, gold spot, parrot, jew, kingies, cobia and Moses perch getting caught. Caloundra and the reefs off the Cape producing quality fish.

Beach REPORT
By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours. The access track from Woorim to the beach is really chopped up, just before entering the beach 62
immediately you get on the sand a deep hole has appeared, so be careful so as not to damage your vehicle. We are seeing a lot of gutters along the beach where some good size fish are being caught. Remember with the summer sand deposits or replenishes on the beach, hence soft patches exist even on the hard sand.

The Bribie Islander
The recent fires followed by the rains means the National Park is now starting to turn green but please remember to not drive on the dunes, we need to be mindful of this and the fines are heavy. Norfolk or better known as the second Lagoon is still the best place for the kids to have a swim, watch the 30km speed limit. The dry beach is very soft if driving at high tide you need to watch the tides and travel 2 hours before the top of the tide and 2 hours after the high tide, travelling on the wet hard sand, just Monday saw us recover a camper trailer from an Ocean Beach Campsite, the tow 4x4 had overheated due to the soft sand and the weight of the trailer.
There are lots of Kangaroos and wallabies in the southern end of the National Park around the Pacific Harbour Golf course, it must be driving the golfers crazy with the increased numbers. The blue markers on the sides of the tracks are necessary for firefighters to escape oncoming fires, here again, we see people pulling them out and using them to try and get their vehicle out of a bog and then discarding them, these are lifesaving devices please leave them alone. Stay safe, take all rubbish with you and keep to the speed limits and look out for kids playing on the beach whilst driving.

MARINE
Algal bloom a wakeup call for Bribie Stormwater R esidents at Bellara on Bribie Island were on alert last Monday when a substantial slick of a brown, oily substance was observed entering Pumicestone Passage around lunchtime from a stormwater drain near the end of Warrigal St. Suspecting an oil or paint spill, authorities were alerted as well as local marine scientist Dr Ben Diggles. Locals were quickly on the scene attempting to wall off the oily mess with a tarpaulin to try to prevent it entering the passage and potentially threatening nearby seagrasses and the Pumicestone Shellfish Habitat Restoration Trial around 1 km to the north. Moreton Bay Regional Council staff arrived on the scene early afternoon and upon inspection announced that the culprit was not an oil or paint spill, but instead was most likely to be a bloom of a blue/green algae called Trichodesmium. Dr Diggles inspected the scene and took samples, later confirming that the cause was indeed a very dense bloom of Trichodesmium. “Fortunately most locals know to NEVER pour any oil or paint on the road or down local stormwater drains, as they all lead directly into local waterways”, Dr Diggles said. “However, this time the algae was blooming from the pipe and forming dense oily brown mats at the top of the tide. These mats became stranded on the nearby sand on the outgoing tide, drying into a thin grey/blue paint-like layer, which is due to the blue pigments from the blue/green algae”, Dr
Diggles said. “Underneath the dried crust was a reddish tinge on the sand, which was due to the very high Trichodesmium cell density. This sort of multi coloured bloom has a distinctive foul odour and is very unusual for Bribie Island, but similar blooms have become relatively common down on the Gold Coast where they have been linked to excessive phosphorous and iron in stormwater runoff from nearby developments” Dr Diggles said. “Some of the local residents who helped clean up the bloom have been coming to Bribie since the 1950’s and have never seen anything like this, so its a sign that development on Bribie has now reached critical levels that are directly impacting local waterways.”
“Yesterday I also observed this algae blooming in Pacific Harbour, which is a bit of a worry as these blooms are unsightly and smelly. The lipid oils exuded by the algae are of the omega-3 type, which are useful when eaten by fish (as an aside, fish get their omega-3 oils from the fatty acids produced by algae in the food chain below them - fish can’t generate fish oil by themselves!), but humans are discouraged from contacting water affected by these blooms because high algal cell counts can cause irritation or dermatitis, and some species of Trichodesmium are also toxic, while all are smelly” Dr Diggles said. “Collapse of the blooms can also cause localised oxygen depletion and fish kills. Because
Banksia Beach resident Ron Russell raking up the dried crust from a dense Trichodesmium bloom originating from the stormwater drain at Bongaree. The dried algae looks like blue/grey paint. Trichodesmium blooms are limited by organic iron and phosphorus availability, its important that Bribie Islanders are aware that excessive fertiliser application during the warmer months encourages these sorts of blooms”, Dr Diggles continued. “In other jurisdictions the frequency of these blooms are reduced by encouraging the local populace to limit or cease fertilizer use during the summer months, while nutrient loading can also be mitigated by running stormwater through reconstructed artificial wetlands like they have done down the Gold Coast in the Broadwater Parklands Mangrove Wetlands Habitat Area”. “The area just north of Warrigal St would be a perfect place to make a wetland to scrub nutrients
from local stormwater. We will need this sort of wetland mitigation on Bribie sooner or later”, Dr Diggles concluded, “better sooner if we want to be able to swim when the water is warmer, especially given the toxic Lyngbya blooms already tend to occur during the cooler months. For more information on how other councils in SE Queensland have used reconstructed wetlands to control nutrient loading and algal blooms, see http://www.burchills.com. au/projects/broadwaterparklands-mangrovewetlands Contact: Dr Ben Diggles, 0403773592, info@ restorepumicestone passage.org, www.restore pumicestonepassage.org

Letters Dear Editor,
Many thanks to Veronica Mercer for her article ‘Human Instincts’ in your last issue, especially for acknowledging evolutionary psychology and the fact that we are animals. Uncomfortable areas for many of us who seek reassurance of our place and purpose in this world. Like it or not we are a social ape with all the baggage that brings, add to that our acquiring consciousness along the way and we are a potent mix. As Veronica points out, without accepting our origins and examining how our legacy influences our thoughts and actions we cannot hope to manage our behaviour; a behaviour

that needs to match the environment we now live in. An environment which is radically different to the one that shaped our minds, Regards, Jim Tasney. Bongaree.
Hi Richard, A few months ago, you were kind enough to publish a poem that I wrote on the “River of Life”. It was received by many of my friends very positively. I was so grateful for their kind emails & conversations. I have been told that I have only a few months to live. Lymphoma has returned in a much more aggressive form from my past ten years of remission. At least these few months will give me the time to
adjust all my affairs to make life easier for my family & wife, the love of my life. I have to say that I am no poet & I know it, but I do write from the heart & believe that is what poetry is about? Kindest regards William (Bill) HINTE. A young Man & his wife strolled the banks of this River called LIFE. Just as this river started in a trickle, so did our lives form & mingle.
Would she be so kind to consider this young man to share the rest of her life?
The river twists & forms its way, just like this couple in every way.
It turned out that way for she told me in time that this young man was the love of her life.
The River of Life.
For life has its tricks as all of us know, the problems to be solved as their lives on go.
The plans of the young are often astray & vary with

We talked all that trip & it went in a twice, she left at her stop. I had just met my Wife. We were young as is right & I awaited next night with great trepidation just for the sight of this young girl. I was sure would become my Wife.

I met my wife on a train in the rain, for it was wet as a flood in the city Domain. Both wet as a fish & cloaked up to suit, rain gear the disguise, it was not just a fluke.

time as life has its way. We married in time that was long to come, with lots of work that had to be done, for life is not simple no matter one tries, but sent to test us in ways that are trite, while we worked through these problems both day & by Night. Our Children did come as one would expect of love that had blossomed with work on both sides, our love to become our comfort in life. The joys of parent-hood are there to be found, as we mould the Life of our Children in ways that are sound. We build on experiences both good & the bad to develop our off-springs to make one proud. For that River of Life flows on as ways are found that one hopes will bear fruit in their space, just as ours has become the rock in its place! We grow old as life moves along, for we have done all for our Children, not always so sound. What we have done is less than the best, but we have done it our way so to hell with the rest. Our twilight is near & yet far away for we are that Family that goes on its way. The river of life is a thing of delight; its beauty is sublime just so is our life. Our Children themselves found our River of Life, their children in turn will experience the life that they chose, as is just & their right. For no Family itself can follow their Parents & do things their way, times change & Parents must know when to let things just lay. It has often been said that the young do not know how to raise their children these days, but think that years gone by, we to were those parents our self. We ambled our way with advice as required & made
YOUR SAY life our way! For families must work out the best that they can the ways to make life successful, never a Ban. These Children of our Children will grow with that River Of Life, just as we did & my God what a fright, those trials that we went through at times very rough. So our Children will have what many of us did not! Times change for good & for bad, but the river of Life goes on with the lives that flow along, as one is so proud of off- spring that delight & at times disappoint. Their lives are theirs to control & abound, in ways that are not always sound. We look at them with a shake of our heads, for we have been there & still we are proud of the ways that they think & work as we did, to make life what it is, along the River of Life.
The Bribie Island Community Kindergarten had its annual market day fundraiser on the 19th of October. Thank you to the community and local businesses for all their support and generosity to help make the day such a success.
We are older than we were, that’s the way life works, wiser perhaps now that childhood has passed & hoping that life’s mistakes are well in the past. Our Love for each other is strong as ever, with family to tend to & guide without temper, with great memories that last as we go on together. For Family life is important as ever, as one strives to be that person so clever, that in the folds of this Family that one holds secure are sound & forever the ones that are true. May the River of Life continue this way, for Families are life for ever & a day as we were once young & looking forward to a life that is shared with great love, our children & their Children, can now share this River, making it theirs to share & behold the wonders of life along this splendid river that I have called Life! Bill HINTE, 2016. Š
