NOV/DEC 2017 - ISSUE 11 candidate has declared to be their priorities and also which of those mean the most to you. Be sure about who you wish to vote before you go to your chosen polling booth and definitely don’t change your mind at the last minute, that usually results in an incorrectly filled out ballot paper. Make sure that you do number every square on the ballot paper to prevent your vote being declared invalid.

HERE WE GO AGAIN Wow! Only a week or so left until we go to the polls in order to choose those who will be in charge of our state for the next few years. This election campaign seems to have gone by somewhat

faster than normal but the one thing that does appear to be the norm in every run up to an election is that each of the candidates wants us to believe that they are going to do more than any of the

others if the voting goes their way. Perhaps we should put them all in at the same time. I reckon that if they were all to achieve what they say they will, we would end up with the most liveable place in the world. Seriously though, the important issue when it comes to voting on election day is to make sure that you are totally aware of what each

WOODCRAFTERS’ SKILL ON DISPLAY By Neil Wilson

Visitors to the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre during the last week in October were amazed by the astounding number of beautifully crafted wooden items that were on display in the Mathew Flinders Gallery. All these handmade pieces were the result of many hours of dedicated work by members of the Bribie and District Woodcrafters (The Woodies) and were in the gallery for their annual exhibition and to be judged for their quality of workmanship.

The Bribie and District Woodcrafters is situated at the rear of the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive in Banksia Beach and is a venue for those who enjoy working with wood and is a wonderful way for retired folks to spend time being creative.

Woodies President Ian Trail told me that he was more than pleased by the amount of visitors who came to view the exhibition which was entitled “Island Magic.” ‘People came from all over the state and further to see

TRAVELS WITH DOUG SKUSE AND CHRIS FINCH

Hi, on the road again - this time for work and pleasure !!! Early July saw us heading for Bileola for the “Old Wheels in Motion” Event that takes

dog demonstrations and information sessions to educate us all on how life used to be before modern technology.

items. But you need to be up early for this one as customers are in the gates at sunrise for the best bargains until close around 3pm.

There is also a range of stallholders (where we fit in) who have old and new merchandise for sale as an extra bit of amusement.

Anakie Gemfest is our next destination to show our wares. This is a four day event held every year in early August. This event has a spectacular display of gemstones, jewellery and

Calliope market was our next stop at the end of July. This market is held in the grounds of the “Calliope River Historical Village” and is normally held approximately every two months. This not only has the market to attend but also is a great place just to visit to see the original buildings that were once part of Calliope and its surrounding towns. Some of the buildings of interest are “Clyde Hotel, Rosevale

Homestead, Larsons Cottage, Wright Cottage, Machine Creek School, Mt Larcom Police Cell and Many Peaks Masonic Lodge. There is also a mini train ride for the kids and rail carriages to explore. Definitely worth the visit !!! Off to Rockhampton now for the “Rocky Swap” which is on the first Saturday in August in the showgrounds. Here you will find anything and everything that you have been looking for, whether it be tools, spare parts, china and collectables, books (old and new) plus stallholders like us who sell general

general stalls for all your needs. You can “stake a claim” for many great prizes, bid at the “silent auction” as well as peruse or purchase a vast array of precious stones. This is a community based event and all proceeds go to local projects. The last show for us is the Moura Coalfest which is held over two days. Various market stalls are set up to sell merchandise and there is also many fun things to see and do. There are “coal shovelling” competitions for

all ages and “pile driving” competitions for the men plus a rodeo and entertainment at night. Heading back towards Bribie gave us a chance to relax as we stopped off in Bundaberg to visit friends and take in the “Bundaberg Rum Distillery” made famous now in those television commercials. A visit to the soft drink factory is also a must if you don’t want alcohol plus you can do a very informative tour of the premises to find out where it all began. Once again it’s time to hit the road again back to our favourite place on earth, beautiful Bribie Island - to live where others love to come for holidays - our piece of paradise !!! BILLY’S BACK

A Story About one Man’s

Total Commitment After completing a thirty four day ultra-marathon which began at Warragul in Victoria and ended at Woombye on the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture pharmacist and dedicated father of one Billy Tindall is back home and enjoying spending time with his wife Bec and two year old son, Ashton. I had the chance recently to catch up with Billy along with his support team, Sharon and Gary Parsons for a chat about the 1,612 kilometre trek which resulted in an impressive and much needed $31,000 being donated to the Morcombe Foundation. There were quite a number of highs and lows during the journey and, during the first week, Billy not only had the misfortune to roll his ankle on the edge of the road, on the morning of the sixth day, he and his team narrowly avoided injury when a Mack truck sideswiped the pilot vehicle, necessitating a trip by Sharon and Gary to get a replacement vehicle.

The eighth day saw Billy out of Victoria and heading ever Northward through New South Wales and, as Woolworths were a major sponsor, supplying food for the team and fuel for the vehicles, Billy took time out to pay a visit to the various Woolworths supermarkets along the way where he met the staff and stocked up on supplies. When the journey began, Denise and Bruce Morcombe

Garry told me that, during the time spent with Denise and Bruce, he developed a great sense of respect for the couple and the wonderful work they do. ‘They work hard to educate children on how to recognise when they are in danger, teaching them the three R’s which are Recognise, React and Report,’ Gary explained.

when he was joined in Dubbo by Bec and his son Ashton. ‘They flew down so we could be together to celebrate Ashton’s second birthday,’ Billy told me. ‘That was pretty special and I think another welcome moment came when we crossed the border into Queensland,’ he said.

Billy found this appropriate sign after a strenuous day one.

The badly damaged pilot vehicle ‘When Bruce gets up to talk to the kids, he has the ability to hold their attention and you can tell that they understand what he is talking about,’ he added.

Billy said that out of the many special moments along the way including when family friend Mark Colless joined the team and rode a pushbike beside Billy to keep him company as well as when Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Adrian Raedel arrived to cover a few sessions of ten Kilometres with him, the best one was

The generous folk at Coff and Co bakery.

On numerous occasions during the trek, people donated various amounts and out of the total amount, $2,100 was placed in the donation tin that the team carried. ‘All along the way, people were stopping us for a chat and to put money in the tin,’ Billy said. ‘One kind bloke even brought us a big bunch of bananas,’ he told me. While all the donations were greatly appreciated, special mention must be made of the generosity shown by the folk at Coff and Co. bakery in Kilcoy who added $500 the total. ‘They told us that they felt really touched by Denise and Bruce,’ Gary said. Sharon told about the time when she pulled up next to a field full of beautiful yellow canola plants to get morning tea ready. ‘Just as the boys arrived for their smoko,

Gary reckoned that it was doing a fly-past for Billy. As the culmination of this incredible effort by Billy was planned to end when Billy arrived at his destination on October 27th which is recognised as the Day for Daniel, he and the team had

When I asked Billy if there were plans for another run in the future, he told me that, although different options have been talked about, at the moment he will just be concentrating on getting fully fit after the injury to his ankle and leg that is still causing him some pain. ‘I also want to be at home to spend time with my wife and son,’ said Billy. ‘Also, we are expecting a daughter in January so I will need to be around to help look after her,’ Billy said proudly. A visit to Billy’s workplace such as Bec and Billy Tindall should be truly admired for the ongoing contributions that they make towards keeping the kids in our communities safe. The team at The Bribie Islander would like to offer our congratulations on the fantastic commitment shown by all involved in the UltraMarathon for Daniel and we are proud to have been involved.

Turning Bribie Island Road into a 4 lane road is important for future planning. To fix the the issue, when widening, place a set of traffic lights for corners of Bribie Island Road and both Regina Aver and Rita Ave. It will allow people to cross safely, and vehicles to turn left and right without trying to beat the traffic. A footpath will be installed for motorised mobility scooters and extra lighting at intersections to ensure safety. I believe in making it 4 lanes from Bruce Highway to other side of the bridge. the amount of traffic going to and from Bribie Island is increasing. making small widening parts will just add bottlenecks and create congestion in those areas. The only time traffic should stop is for traffic lights. proper planning and funding should be a priority for the person elected at the state election.

As a driver I know that the stretch from the 90 kph zone to the 80 kph zone (travelling from the island) is a nightmare at times. As a pedestrian I know from experience how dangerous it can be to cross it. And don’t even think about riding a bike along it! There needs to kerb and channelling work, lane widening and bike path improvement. In the meantime, pedestrian-controlled traffic lights and/or a footbridge should be installed. The piecemeal approach to infrastructure by alternating ALP/LNP State governments is frustrating and inefficient - long and short-term plans need to be made easily accessible online. Ultimately what you are talking about is four lanes from the highway all the way to the island. This would bring even more traffic to the island, and put great pressure on our National Park and infrastructure. I know from talking to voters that there is a lot of unease about the prospect of becoming just another tacky resort full of trashy high-rises.

Simone Wilson LNP The LNP has committed 20 million dollars if elected for the upgrade to Bribie Island Road which will ensure safety for all users. The section from Hickey Road through to Saints Road not only floods but is dangerous. There have been several serious accidents along this stretch of road therefore, we need to address this section first. I have spoken to many emergency service workers who have advised this section of the road is a priority and needs to be fixed. 12 years ago there was an opportunity to build a Ningi Bypass Road, however, this was rejected by residence of that time and the Labor government. There was also a pedestrian island in close proximity to the Theo Green Park however, this was removed due to several accidents and some road users using this as an opportunity to overtake other vehicles at high speed. I am committed to consulting and communicating with residence to ensure their concerns and ideas are heard so action can be take that will support all in our community

Q1.

My question is about Bribie Island Road, Ningi. What are the plans? Lets forget about the bridge as a bridge is only as good as the road that leads to it. Ningi has one spot along the whole stretch where people can cross safely. There is a park with swings and barbecues and further down a shopping complex yet nowhere to safely cross

Rick Williams IND

Shop Local, Spend Local, Support Our Local Economy with 500meteres or more. This road has no gutters, overgrown and untidy footpaths and poor lighting.

Q2.

Bearing in mind that it is alleged that their is funding for duplicating Bribie Island Road from Hickey Road to the Shell Service Station, wouldn’t it be appropriate to duplicate the road

Greg Fahey ONE NATION

Q1.

Q1&2

Q2.

Firstly I would ask for people who use this road regularly to form a task force/ action group (which I would support) to come up with what they feel is needed to make the road safe, easy manageable and traffic flow friendly (with the assistance of professionals) which would then form the rectification plan. This ‘new plan’ will need strong representation by their local member to be implemented.

The section of road between the roundabout at Bestmann Rd West (711 roundabout) to the 90 zone (Transfer Station) is an estimated cost of $135 Million. The State Government has refused to spend money on that section of Bribie Island Rd which is why it was so hard to get the bus platforms approved. I want a crossing at the Ranald St shops and one across to Theo Greene Park. Lighting, curbing and channelling will come with the 4 lane upgrade. Bribie Island Rd needs to be 4 lanes completed from the bridge to the highway. The section between Saint Rd and Hickey Rd is estimated to cost $80 Million, less the ten million that I have already successfully gained for the traffic lights and realignment at Old Toorbul Point Rd. I also secured $3 Million to do the design work on the flood section, hence I would assume that if re-elected it will be the next section to be done.

“ The future modifications to the Bribie Island Road needs a complete review, the truth of the matter is there will already be a plan in place, drawn up by the engineers and traffic management team of the Department of Main Roads. I have been in meetings with State officials before and regardless of any positive input of further improvements to their plans they are very unresponsive to accepting changes to original plans.

Regardless of whether there is an ‘alleged budget’ or not, it will take an influential MP to get this across the line.”

through Ningi and duplicate the Bridge at the same time. Just the duplication of the road to the Shell servo will only cause bottlenecks through Ningi and onto the bridge?

Michael Hoogwaerts ALP

Q1.

I have raised my four kids and worked as a teacher on Bribie Island for 20 years, this community means everything to me. I agree, there are some issues that need to be resolved, not just congestion but overall safety for cars/ pedestrians. The footpaths are in poor condition, verges are overgrown and untidy and no safe area to cross, this is something the Council and relevant department need to address, if elected I will work with them to resolve those and many other issues. I will make sure all levels of government are doing their part, I care about this community and will fight everyday on the issues that matter.

Q2.

If elected, I will make upgrading Bribie Island Road my number one priority. It was the LNP who: Dumped plans for a major upgrade of the intersection at Old Toorbul Point and Bribie Island Roads, and promised to deliver a second bridge to the Island and never did. The LNP cannot be trusted when it comes to Bribie Island Road, they will promise anything to get elected then never deliver, Labor has and will again deliver real infrastructure and services for Pumicestone.

THE MINI BRIBIE ISLANDER

Pumicestone Passage has earned an A-minus for its excellent environmental condition in the latest Healthy Land and Water Report Card unveiled today at the Bribie Island Seaside Museum. The waterway, which garnered a B-plus rating in 2016, was rated excellent overall for the first time by not-for-profit Healthy Land and Water (HLW) following significant improvements to the health of freshwater streams and estuarine water quality in the catchment. Each year the HLW Report Card grades the health of catchments across South East Queensland, including the Pumicestone Passage and Pine and Caboolture catchments, using extensive computer modelling and field monitoring. Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said the strong showing for Pumicestone Passage demonstrated the combined effort of Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast councils, local businesses, community groups and

residents to deliver the 20132016 Pumicestone Passage Action Plan. “Since we launched the action plan in four years ago, 36 major projects have been delivered with the goal of enhancing the passage’s habitat, water quality, and social and economic benefit,” Mayor Sutherland said. “For the health of the passage to go from a B-minus to an A-minus in the space of two years is an incredible feat and we need to continue to ride the momentum.” Mayor Sutherland said council and stakeholders would now look to implement a further 32 projects in the recently adopted 2017-2020 action plan to further enhance the passage’s environmental habitats and biodiversity. Division 2 Councillor Peter Flannery said estuarine water quality was also rated excellent in the Caboolture Catchment and freshwater health along the Pine Catchment also improved, with both catchments

maintaining their respective B and B-minus grades.

“It’s encouraging to see that water quality continues to improve, and we certainly have no intention of getting complacent now,” Cr Flannery said “Whether it’s the Wamuran Bushcare Group removing more than 1,800m2 of weeds along the Caboolture River, or the installation of a new fishway at Brendale to help native fish navigate the South Pine Rivers, it’s all hands on deck when it comes to improving our waterways.

RESIDENTS URGED TO HAVE SAY FOR COASTAL HAZARD STRATEGY Moreton Bay Regional Council is inviting residents to share their thoughts on the region’s coastal areas and help shape how the community can adapt to coastal hazards and a changing coastline.

From November 6 until December 8, residents can complete a survey on council’s website (www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au/chas/ consultation), and provide feedback about how they interact with local beaches, foreshores and waterways and what they think some of the challenges these areas may face in the future, such as storm tide flooding and coastal erosion.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said it was important to understand how the community viewed their coastal areas and encouraged residents to have their say.

“To make sure we can develop the best possible strategy for our community, we need your feedback and want you to tell us how you see Moreton Bay’s coastal areas now and into the future,” Mayor Sutherland said. “Whether you live on the coast or visit our foreshores and beaches, this is your chance to have your say. The survey is the first step in an ongoing consultation process, that will also include the formation of community reference group. An expressions of interest process for the community reference group is expected to commence later this year.

Independent Member for Pumicestone Fax 07 34742109 Email: pumicestone@parliament.qld.gov.au

About Rick- Rick and his wife Cheryl have lived in this area for many years, with a university degree

in Financial Planning he has old school values, to serve for the benefit of our whole community. Rick admits he has warts and pimples just like most of us and his yes is his yes and his no is his no, with proven track record of down to earth honesty and fairness, many know that he has had his battles with MBRC, Unity Water, Banks and Insurers, put simply, if what they’re doing is wrong he challenges them. Rick comes from a family of seven, with no silver spoons, five of his siblings have passed on, his mum Betty is 86 and lives on Bribie where she enjoys her freedom. Rick has seven grandchildren and four adult sons, one of his sons is in a wheelchair having lost his legs in an accident many years ago.

Rick Fight’s for What’s Right

As an independent I can achieve as much if not more than I have achieved in my last term. A hung Parliament is expected and the crossbenchers achieve a lot in hung a parliament as seen by The Katter Party and Peter Wellington (Independent) for their electorates. Law & Order  Stronger Police presence for all of Pumicestone but especially Beachmere that has 4200 residents and no regular presence.  A curfew from 10.00pm for youth’s up to 16 Years of age when not accompanied by a parent. Education  Banksia Beach State School car park will be achieved as Mrs. King, Mr. Freshwater and I took a petition to Parliament.  Covered walkway/shelter from school to the Auditorium at Bribie Island State School is way overdue.  Power supply, Additional class rooms, upgrading of facilities, these things are on the way and I will see them come to fruition. Health & Lifestyle  Power Price Reduction – LNP will sell off your assets, Labor is price gouging, that’s why they had $771 Million to rebate to the community. Why not discount in the beginning and reduce the cost of living up front. Only the Crossbenchers can deliver this.  See the Millions of $’s of improvements promised for the Caboolture Hospital completed I’ve delivered so much in my last term.  Bribie Island and surrounding areas deserves to have a GP Super Clinic (mini Hospital) with our population and remote location.  Upgrading the bus time tables and service noting- Beachmere has no Sunday bus services at all for their 4200 residents.  Junior Boat Licenses (restricted) for youth over the age of 12, other license are available from this age QLD drags it heals.  Photoelectric Fire Alarms in all homes earlier than the proposed 10 years, Govt. Subsidy of $10 for health care card holders.  Homeless and Domestic Violence Accommodation - I have worked on getting this for the last 3 years. With the support of several community groups in our area, as a member of the cross benches this will happen. Infrastructure  Deputy Premier, J. Trad, turned a blind eye to developments behind Woolworths and high-rise proposals on Bribie Island this comes without the proper infrastructure planning I.E. a 4 Lane Bribie Island Road and followed by a new 4 lane bridge.  Beachmere Road is well overdue for major works and Pumicestone Road needs flood upgrades. Environment  The Vegetation Management Act.(tree clearing) has to be restored to safeguard the Great Barrier Reef and other water ways. Right the Wrong  ADANI has a bad financial and environmental global track record and can’t be trusted, crossbench scrutiny is paramount.  Revisit the compensation paid to Taxi License holders who were duped out of the real value off these superannuation retirement investments for many owners.  A new Parliamentary owned constituent database to replace the current systems that breach everyone’s privacy by allowing personal and delegate information into the hands of PARTY OFFICIALS who own the current electoral office data bases. The LNP use (Feedback) and Labor uses (Campaign Central). This is not good enough, I and my staff refused to use it in my office.

Election Pre-Polling

Election Pre-Polling will be held at unit 2 / 42 Cessna Drive Caboolture from 14th November 2017. Street parking available and you must have identification with you when you vote. 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday except 9am to 6pm 24th Nov.

in firstly the ukulele and then the acoustic guitar during his early teenage years and of course, the rest is history. ‘My good friend Rick Purdee taught me all these good chords and this resulted in my liking for what I refer to as straight melodies, music like The Shadows are famous for,’ George explained. ‘I went on to join my first band and that was The Vedettes. As there were several bands that had been named after various models of cars, we chose that name after the Simca V8 called Vedette,’ he added.

When you talk to very dedicated amateur or professional musicians, there is one particular fact about their musical experience that almost all of them seem to have in common and this is that they began at a very early age and guitarist George Marshall is definitely no exception. Although George has spent most of his life playing guitar in quite a few bands and

George Marshall at a variety of venues, his love of this instrument did not develop until ten years after he became involved with musical instruments as a pipe band drummer. ‘My father was a Pipe Major and a foundation member of the St Andrews Pipe Band in Brisbane,’ said George. ‘During my time as a drummer I won an Australian championship,’ he told me. George became interested

The Vedettes began with a regular spot at The Cleveland Sands and later moved to the Treasury in Brisbane. George told me that during all of his time with this band and after that with a band by the name of Replay which played at the Queensland Cricketeer’s Club, they always played the pub scene. ‘Sometimes I filled in for a band called The Dominoes that played at Cloudland,’ said George. ‘They were a seven piece dance band and I never really took to it,’ he said. As what I suppose was a natural progression, George later joined Iron Duke, and, after a time at The Waterloo Hotel, began playing at night clubs, backing internationally famous artists such as The Delltones, Ricky May and Julie Anthony. ‘This was usually six nights every week and seven hours a night, George recalled. ‘It was hard work,’ he told me. Other bands that benefited from the sound of George’s guitar included The Country 4, The T-Birds and also The

Mustangs and, as well as having regular spots with these bands, George was often asked to stand in for members of other bands who were unable to play. About four years ago, George moved to our beautiful island as a way to be closer to some of his family who live here and it was at this point that his friend and Country Links founder Janice Brown enlisted his musical expertise for the Country Links Band. ‘Our lead guitarist was about to give it away due to ill health and although George said that he would just fill in until we found someone permanent, I talked him into staying with us,’ Janice said. ‘I have known George for many years and to hear what he does with that guitar, it is really special. He is very respected by the other band members,’ she added. Although George has previously played mainly a mixture of rock and middle of the road genres, he told me that he is enjoying playing country music and he says that the people are really nice. The Country Links afternoons are held on the second Sunday of each month at the Golden Age Centre on Arcadia Street in Woorim and Janice brown can be contacted on 0403 481 943 if you would like to find out more about this popular venue where you can hear both the regular performers as well as the walk-ups and all backed by the Country Links band featuring the unforgettable sound of George Marshall’s guitar.

DINING OUT AT CHARLIE’S

Shop Local, Spend Local, Support Our Local Economy

By Richard Whetlor

oday we are off to The Bribie T Island Hotel at Bellara to visit Charlies to experience the “New Chef...New Menu” for a lunch dining out review and a couple of beers (it’s a tough job but someone has to do it!). We were greeted at the entrance upon arrival by the always welcoming Hotel Manager Ben and Bistro Hostess Linda. I am also always amazed just how big the dining area is “It is huge!” and very nicely done as there are kind of chill out areas where you can sit down and read a book or enjoy a drink with friends on one of the many sofas positioned in different areas of the eating area, pretty cool I thought. We all grab a drink from the bar area and head to our table

which has a beautiful view of Pumicestone passage, we have a browse through the menu, a good varied selection and very, very reasonably priced. The ladies choose first and we all order starters to come first and then our main meals after. The selection of starters we ordered and shared were sticky chicken wings which were very sticky and tasted perfect with the spicy BBQ sauce (not too spicy) Deep Fried Camembert with plum sauce, very moreish, I could eat plates of these! The coconut crumbed prawn cutlets were cooked to perfection and again I could eat plenty of these especially with the mango mayonnaise and the squeeze

of fresh lemon over them. The roasted Pumpkin and avocado salad (very low gluten) was a good mixer and consisted of rocket leaves, cos lettuce, red onion, and ranch dressing all together tasted very nice. Selina ordered the “best” steak sandwich which came highly recommended from Tiffany as her and her mum Carol were at Charlie’s for lunch a couple of weeks back and Carol had the “best” steak sandwich then. Selina reported the same outcome, the steak was cooked as asked and was very tasty which included grilled rib fillet steak and toasted turkish bread with a fried egg, bacon, lettuce, tomato, chips and Aioli. Karen decided on the Pesto spaghetti with fresh tomato, rocket leaves and grated parmesan cheese which was very nice, and I ordered the daily special which was the mixed grill. I was under

| 17

pressure to finish it there was a heap of food but it was a really good feed and great value again. The meal came with a flat mushroom, bacon, sausage, jacket potato with sour cream, tomato’s, salad and a nice steak. Charlie’s restaurant at the Bribie Island Hotel in Bellara comes recommended by the Bribie Islander team for sure! Visit them and grab a table and try a feed with the family, they also do a wicked daily roast dinner too.

PAT CANHAM Oz Harvest which distributes food to those who need it and there is a bargain shop where people can get some great items at low cost. Any profits from the shop go to help with the services that we provide’ he added.

‘The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre is a place where people who are doing it tough can go to get help and no one judges anyone else,’ said Pat Canham who has been a volunteer at the Neighbourhood Centre for over three years. When Pat moved to Bribie Island from Armidale, he decided to pay a visit to the centre just to see what they do. ‘While I was there, Lisa Nelson asked me if I would help carry some of the Oz Harvest goods upstairs and it all went on from there,’ Pat told me. ‘After I had being doing the Oz Harvest for a while, I did the induction course so that I could be of assistance in the other areas,’ he added.

Pat Canham Pat explained that he had been a volunteer for the Salvation Army in Armidale before moving here and believes that volunteering is a great way of keeping the mind active. He spends two days behind the front desk each week and also makes himself available on other days if the centre is short staffed. ‘My role there involves being able to refer anyone who comes to the centre to someone who can assist them with whatever their problem is,’ Pat said. ‘We have many services available, both on site and at other venues. We can offer help in a really wide range of areas including financial counselling, legal help, general counselling and emergency relief as well as

Whenever I have had the opportunity to call at the Neighbourhood Centre during one of Pat’s days there, he always seems to have a big smile on his face and while I was talking with him, he made the reason why very clear when he said, ‘I always look forward to my days at the centre, all of the volunteers are great people and we all get on so well.’ He also told me that he finds

it good to be able to share information with the other volunteers because each person there has their own skills and knowledge which, when shared, can then be of used to help others.

One of the reasons that I enjoy my job so much is because I get to talk to people like Pat Canham and his fellow volunteers at the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre. The centre is situated at 9 Verdoni Street in Bellara and is open from Monday to Thursday from 9am until 3pm. For more information about the services available there or to enquire about becoming a volunteer, you’re welcome to phone them on 3408 8440 or call in to say hello, they would love to meet you.

AN IMPORTANT DAY IN DECEMBER

By Neil Wilson

General Assembly resolution 47/3 when the annual observance of International Day of Disabled Persons (now International Day of People with Disabilities) was proclaimed by the organisation in 1992.

As each year passes, more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of working towards total inclusivity for people with disabilities by the removal of all the attitudinal, physical and technological barriers which they face on a daily

basis. This can only be achieved by focusing on inclusive education and complete access to justice, health care services and infrastructure as well as accessible communities and this has become a part of the global framework set down by the United Nations

The date set down for the International Day of People with Disabilities is December 3rd which is now observed by countries all over the world and each year since 1997, the UN has provided a relevant theme for observance of the day. This year, the theme is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all” and the main principle of this theme is to ‘leave no one behind,’ empowering people with disabilities to be active contributors within society.

bongareevillage.com.au

In Australia, all governments are committed to a nationwide approach which is aimed at improving the lives of people with disabilities as well as their families and carers under the National Disability Strategy 2010-2020. This ten year framework seeks to create a society that encourages people with a disability to fulfil their potential as equal citizens. Prior to the 1992 proclamation, the United Nations has constantly worked towards more recognition for people with disabilities by naming 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons and then 1983-1992 as the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons.

For many years now, (twenty or more, I think) the talented members of The Bribie Island Orchestra have helped to kick off the Christmas season by holding a concert for locals and visitors and orchestra Director/Conductor Martin White tells me that the tradition will definitely continue this year. ‘The evening will feature tuneful orchestra pieces with a Christmas flavour and there will be carols for the audience to sing along to,’ said Martin. ‘In the past, people have always enjoyed being able to

TOO OLD, TOO FAST

Despite being an experienced private pilot and having flown a variety of aircraft including Cessna 150’s, 152’s and 175’s as well as his own Grumman, Bongaree man Garry Kelly never thought that he would ever own a plane that he had built himself but, after some prompting by good friend Ken Warland who had a set of plans for a single seat sports aircraft, Garry began to make the preparations that

were necessary for him to construct the ‘Teenie -Two” in the garage at the back of his house. ‘Ken and I shared the initial cost of the materials and for the powerplant, we obtained an 1835 cc VW engine which was ideal for the size of the Teenie-Two. I am a motor mechanic by trade so I was able to completely re-condition it,’ Garry told me. ‘I worked on it every day and Ken would come to help on a

couple of nights each week. The instructions that came with the plans said that it could be built in around three hundred hours but to do that, we would have to have taken too many shortcuts,’ he added. To ensure that the little plane was built perfectly, Garry and Ken spent many hours on structural improvements, and

The Teenie-Two - Fun to Fly did extra tasks such as using twice the recommended amount of rivets on the wings. ‘According to the specifications, this aircraft is rated as being able to withstand a 9g positive or negative loading and we worked out that the double rivets would put that up to 10g,’ Garry explained. ‘I think that the build took us a total

Most important and the largest question is why do our petrol prices move so dramatically either down or up???... Mr & Mrs public demand that federal MP capped our petrol prices Bruce. It’s actually funny you should mention this Bruce – I’m currently working on this issue with a local Caboolture resident. Last year, George made enquiries with the previous Member for Longman about the disproportionate prices of petrol in our area as compared with inner-city areas. He lobbied Mr Roy

at the time, presenting a petition filled with the signatures of fed-up locals like you. Not much had been done since then. With poor George left in the dark, I have followedup with the ACCC who tell me that 38 capital cities in Queensland are currently monitored by the consumer rights body. It’s still unclear as to what monitoring activities have been undertaken and further actions (if any) the previous Member and his Government have taken. I am in the process of making representations on behalf of George to investigate this further. Please feel free to follow-up with my office on the progress of this issue.

pocket. We’ll continue calling on the Government to take action like stopping the freeze to GP and specialist rebates. Hi Susan, I would like to know from you what your difference to our everyday living will be please? Others are talking about power bills, car rego etc. While it would be great to have lower bills, there are so many things... What difference will you bring to Bribie Island and its wider area? Many thanks, (moved from Melbourne last year) Kes.

Kes, with an upcoming State election you’ve asked a great question. Your local Labor candidate for Pumicestone Michael Hoogwaerts and I are both solid advocates for a strong and healthy community on Bribie. Michael has clearly demonstrated this with a recent announcement of $253 million dollars to upgrade to the Caboolture Hospital. As your Federal Member, I’ll make sure I work with a State Labor Government to fight against further cuts to federal hospital funding, like the $171 million we saw Malcolm Turnbull slash in this year’s Budget to make way for a $65 billion company tax cut. Your local Labor team stands up for working families, and unlike the Liberals, we put our communities before multinational corporations. Please reach out to Michael if you have any questions at michael.hoogwaerts@ queenslandlabor.org. You can also email me at susan. lamb.mp@aph.gov.au.

AM I THE ONLY ONE? By Neil Wilson

Whilst I do go for a walk occasionally, for some reason I hardly ever get to walk along certain sections of our beautiful Pumicestone Passage waterfront and this, I suppose, is the reason why I have only just discovered the public exercise area that is situated in the park across from the Bribie Island Hotel on Sylvan Beach Esplanade in Bellara.

There have been many times in the past that, when I announce to someone that I have just discovered something that I think is new and amazing, I get told, “That’s been there for ages, why don’t you open your eyes and look around a bit more.” Well, the fact of the matter is, I tend to focus more on where I am going rather than gawking at everything around the place. Okay, enough of that, at the

risk of being embarrassed because everyone other than me knows about this park based gym equipment which I presume is the result of an incentive by Council to reduce the growing rate of people who are overweight or obese, let me tell you about what I have discovered. Although I have been informed that there are several of these exercise areas situated at various locations in Bongaree and the installations began about ten years ago, I would presume that the one that has caught my attention is the same or similar. The area is made up of five separate exercise stations which offer three different pieces of equipment at each one. Walking through the area, I was impressed by the range of exercise options on offer and these include a step-up unit, a sit up and push up bench, a pull down

machine and an aerobic cycle. Each machine comes with basic instruction for it’s use and appears to be very well constructed with rubber, slip resistant hand grips.

According to the signage on the equipment, it is from what manufacturer A Space calls the “Fit for Parks” range and is designed to be totally compliant with AS 4685:2014 which is the relevant Australian design rule for all such equipment. A Space advises that each piece of the equipment incorporates an innovative high load bearing internal stopper system which is engineered to eliminate dangerous crush points. When discussing the “Fit for Parks” range of exercise equipment, A Space Managing Director and Chief Fitness Advocate, Dean Joel, said that he has the vision that all Australians should have accessible and easy to use outdoor equipment

Everything from a step-up unit to an aerobic cycle that is suited to all ages and fitness levels. As yet I have not returned to the park to try out this equipment which I regard as an excellent idea which hopefully will result in those who cannot afford to attend a gymnasium taking advantage of the opportunity to regularly workout for free. This article is dedicated to those of you who, like me, are always the last to know.

THE SIGNS ARE ALL THERE

NOV/DEC 2017 - ISSUE 11

By Neil Wilson

Somewhen and somewhere during our lifetime, each and every one of us will encounter someone who fits the description of a toxic person and, whilst some of us are able to recognise the signs almost immediately, others, to their detriment, will take much longer to correctly analyse what they are dealing with.

to lay blame on anything or anyone other than themselves. Another common trait of a toxic person is the tendency to constantly criticise you when you are doing something for them and to only see things from their perspective and they will very seldom or never accept that they could be wrong and you are right.

Toxic people all share very similar behavioural patterns and, although some display these patterns openly and more frequently than others, the signs are always there if you know what to look for. They commonly refuse to accept any responsibility for the bad situations in their lives and are always quick

A toxic person will only point out what you can do for them and will often attempt to twist their requests around so it appears that they are doing you a favour. They are never really interested in what they can do for you. This is best summed up by the old adage, “When people treat you like they don’t care – believe

them.”

Some of the other signs displayed by a toxic person include the tendency to get even more toxic if you try to please them as this only feeds their belief that they are better than you, to always blame a bad memory when they don’t do something that they told you they would and they also tend to be constantly in “me” mode, not caring about the feelings of others as they have always got better things to do than display a bit of empathy of patience. They will never accept that to be so selfcentred and completely clueless is just rude. When you associate with a toxic person, before long they

will tell you that they have noticed a change in your attitude towards them but they will never notice or for that matter ever accept that it is their behaviour which has made you change. This is due to their self-centred nature and is just one more way of saying, “nothing is my fault.” As I said at the beginning, we will all come across a toxic person at some stage and the best advice that I can give for when this happens is, “Don’t let negative and toxic people rent space in your head – raise the rent and kick them out.” You never realise just how toxic a person is until you begin to breathe fresher air.

BECAUSE... The following story of mine is wanting to give my late mother many thanks for the performance in her day of youthfulness.

My mother in her youth and family came from a small area south of England called Portsmouth which serviced passenger ships. My youthful mother plus a female friend would visit these passenger ships in the hope of gaining something for themselves. One passenger ship called Titanic was where they managed to score a meal for a small job performed. This passenger ship was awaiting servicing, then to board quite a number of passengers, and sail away

on the seas. My mother and her girlfriend decided they would like a trip away, so they booked a passage. However, before boarding they came to the conclusion to cancel. On this particular cruise the Captain was informed of icebergs on his track.

CHRISTMAS IS

ALIVE AND WELL At Banksia Beach

In a world where in many instances Christmas has become nothing more than an opportunity to overindulge in food and drink and spend too much on expensive presents, one Bribie Island couple are doing their utmost to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive.

Nola and Ted Knight live at 90 Foxtail Crescent in Banksia Beach and from December 1st, will be operating what could arguably be the most extensive Christmas display in the local area. As well as the beautiful lighting that adorns the couple’s front yard and has taken approximately two weeks to put in place, inside the garage is an absolutely incredible display that is made up of everything from miniature figurines participating in the various attractions of a fairground to the quaint houses in a Swiss village and all accompanied by the various sounds that one would associate with the display. ‘When we started fifteen years ago, all we had was one string of lights on the roof and then we got the bug,’ Nola explained. ‘This became our protest against the disappearance of all things that used to be associated with the Christmas season. We just want to make people happy,’ she added. ‘People ask if we

are collecting and I tell them that all we want to collect is smiles,’ Ted told me. Nola and Ted began their light displays when they lived in Schooner Court and have continued the tradition over the years, adding to the features each time that Christmas came around. They moved from Schooner Court to Laidley and then to D’Aguilar and at both these addresses had a house on high ground resulting in their light displays being seen for kilometres. Having moved to their current residence two years ago, this is Nola and Ted’s second display there and if the amount of people who visited their display last year is any indication, they are in for a busy time. ‘All up I think we had about one thousand people came for a look,’ said Nola. ‘There were two busloads from the retirement villages and even the teenagers who came loved the display. They put it on Facebook which resulted in more visitors,’ she said. Each year, the couple spend about six weeks setting up their display and normally begin in early October. ‘When we start each year it always seems a bit daunting but once we get going, we get motivated by how it looks,’

A part of the beautiful Christmas lights display at 90 Foxtail Crescent in Banksia Beach. Nola told me. ‘When we take it all apart, each piece has to go into it’s own box and all the figurines are individually bubble wrapped,’ said Nola. The effort that Nola and Ted Knight go to each year in order to make Christmas a bit brighter for all who take the time to visit their wonderful display should be commended

Nola and Ted Knight - Keeping the spirit of Christmas alive.

and I sincerely hope that they keep up with the tradition for many years to come. From December 1st, the display at 90 Foxtail Crescent in Banksia Beach will be open for two hours from 7pm until 9pm each night and I can promise you that, from what I have seen, you won’t regret going for a look.

Bribie Simply Healthy By Heenam Kim

I would like to talk about money or wealth this time. Some people may wonder what is relationship between a health shop and money? But our health and wealth is something to do with our mind. I would like to ask you a question “What is the difference between rich man and a poor man?” What is the difference between a rich man and a poor man? Interestingly there is only one difference between them, what would that be? It’s a perception of oneself. A rich man believes that he deserves the wealth and a poor man believes that he is not worthy of such wealth. In another word what we believe about ourselves changes and direct our fate/ life. Since I learnt that the banks create money out of thin air, money doesn’t seem to be real to me anymore. Banks

create new money whenever they give loans. 97% of the money in the economy today is created by banks, in the form of bank deposits. Whilst just 3% of money is still in that old-fashioned form of cash that we can touch. The numbers that you see in your account are just accounting entries in the banks’ computers. In this case money doesn’t seem to be so real, it’s merely numbers on statement and if I am cleaver enough I can transfer millions dollars into my bank account without a trace. I am just not cleaver enough to do so. We pay interests to bank that we borrowed, but the physical money doesn’t exist yet we are paying mortgages interests for the phantom money. Someone is definitely getting richer by every minute (though but not majority of public). We are being trapped by the

| 31

bank system. Anyone who is interested in this matter can do further investigate by visiting www.positivemoney. org , this is a good starting point. And an Academy Award for Best Documentary feature, documentary ‘Inside Job’ directed by Charles H. Ferguson in 2010 is worth watching. I felt there must be a formula to make money so I started to do some research and surprisingly there were plenty of books and information available. Especially the book called ‘The science of getting rich’ written in 1910 by Wallace D. Wattle is interesting one. This was the book that inspired Rhonda Byrne to create the movie, The Secret. And the other book is called ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill published in 1937. After encountering those books I realized that one’s wealth is depends on one’s subconscious belief. Our conscious mind has no saying it in, our life journey all to do our subconscious mind. The conscious mind is our brain, which is responsible for logic and reasoning; where as subconscious mind is responsible for all of involuntary actions. Our bodily functions are controlled by the subconscious mind. Our emotions are also controlled by the subconscious mind. That’s why sometimes we feel afraid, anxious or down without wanting to experience such a feeling. Our beliefs and memories are stored in subconscious mind. Once a ten-years old boy who was suffering from massive migraine and insomnia came to the shop with his mother. He couldn’t put himself to sleep because he was so worried while his entire family was in sleep some people might come to his house with weapon and attack them. His conscious mind knows that is not likely to happen; yet he suffered from that thought. His subconscious mind’s belief was creating his illness.

EQUAL PRIVILEGES AT THE GOLF CLUB ??? Bairnsdale golf club didn’t allow women on the golf course. Eventually, there was enough pressure that they decided to allow women on the course during the week. The ladies were satisfied with this arrangement, formed a women’s league and became active. After about six months, the club board received a letter from the women’s league complaining about the men urinating on the golf course. Naturally, they just ignored the matter. After another six months, they received another letter reminding them of the previous letter and demanding action. After due deliberation, the board sent the women a letter advising them that they had been granted equal privileges.

ELDERLY GOLFERS Russ Buttacovoli, an 80-year-old Italian goes to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor is amazed at what good shape the guy is in and asks, ‘how do you stay in such great physical condition?’ I’m Italian and I am a golfer,’ says Russ, ‘and that’s why I’m in such good shape. I’m up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a glass of vino, and all is well.’ “’Well’ says the doctor, ‘I’m sure that helps, but there’s got to be more to it. How old was your Father when he died?

“Who said he was dead?”

The doctor is amazed. ‘You mean you’re 80 years old and your Father’s still alive. How old is he?’ ‘He’s 100 years old,’ says Russ. ‘In fact he golfed with me this morning, and then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had a little vino and that’s why he’s still alive. He’s Italian and he’s a golfer, too.’ ‘Well,’ the doctor says, ‘that’s great, but I’m sure there’s more to it than that. How about your Father’s Father? How old was he when he died?’ ‘Who said my Nonno’s dead?’ Stunned, the doctor asks, ‘You mean you’re 80 years old and your grandfather’s still living! Incredible, how old is he?’

“Sounds to me like she’s been sweeping around” !

And the best man says :

“BROOM BROOM”

‘No, Nonno couldn’t go this morning because he’s getting married today.’ At this point the doctor is close to losing it. ‘Getting married? Why would a 118 year- old guy want to get married?’ ‘Who said he wanted to?

SO MANY TALENTED YOUNG ARTISTS

By Neil Wilson

As was proven by the amount and quality of the entries in the Next Generation Art Prize at the Mathew Flinders Gallery recently, Bribie Island is home to so many talented young artists whose wonderful works can be seen as proof of their total dedication to what they are striving to achieve. The

Year 6’s Trash or Treasure

Elijah Coutts created this acrylic piece students at Bribie Island State School are a great example of this, having not only been successful in the Next Generation competition but also recognised for their entries in the Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards in October. The Bribie students entered an impressive eighty three works in the regional awards and arts teacher Cheryl Thornely said that some students even worked on their entries in their

lunch breaks and at home in order to have them ready for the exhibition. ‘My congratulations go to all students that were involved for such diverse and creative work,’ Cheryl said. ‘I commend them for their dedication to their art practice and the courage that they have shown by putting their works on display in the public domain,’ she added.

At the Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards, two of the Bribie Island State School students won first prizes with Jayme Felschow getting the nod from the judges for her imaginative collage and painting and Elijah Coutts being successful with his acrylic image of a tranquil scene of sunset over water and mountains. Addison (Addie as she told me that she likes to be called) Coutts picked up a well deserved second with her colourful painting, “Sailing into the Sunset” whilst both Evelien Lambert and Gene Eady were recognised with third place awards in their individual categories. A number of other entries received a commendation award. As well as the individual entries, there were four collaborative works entered by students from year two, year three and year six. All of these showed a great talent for creativity and dedication to the task. Apparently, the year six students who were working on the “Trash or Treasure” exhibit gave up their time over the holidays to create the piece at school. Entries from both the Next Generation exhibition and the Region Youth Art Awards are currently on display at the Bribie Island State School and are available for viewing by members of the public during school hours

until November 23rd. The official opening of the display at the school was held on the evening of November 13th and each of the artists received a participation award which was presented by Division One Councillor Brooke Savige.

Another event that has attracted a range of entries from the students at the school is the Lions International Peace Poster competition which is organised worldwide and allows students to share their unique image of peace with others. This is the seventh year that the school has entered the competition, sponsored by the Bribie Island Lions and a total of one hundred keen artists from year six have created entries that display this year’s theme of “The Future of Peace” and, after the judging on November 3rd, Brooke Pollock was selected the winner and her poster which displayed how technology would contribute to create a more peaceful world, will now go on to the next level for judging in the district competition. Six other entries received highly commended awards and one artist whose entry attracted the judge’s attention received an encouragement award.

Brooke Pollock’s entry will now be entered in the district competition

The team at the Bribie Islander would like to say well done to all our local young artists and we wish Brooke good luck in the next level of judging.

THE BENEFITS OF KENNELING

Best Friends for Thousands of Years

It seems that people and dogs have co-evolved through history to live together for mutual gain. They hunt together, and both human and dog eat based on their mutual successes. Humans and dogs form a unique interspecies social circle with all of the complex emotional bonds this entails. No wonder we love our doggies and they love us to the bone: it is written in both our DNA! Dogs have evolved a highly keen sense of smell and rather poor eyesight, while people have lost their sense of smell (largely) and developed keen eyesight; a perfect pairing! Dogs

SUPER SPECIAL! provided an early warning security service for human villages using their superduper hearing, and still do. Luckily the social systems for humans and dogs are very similar, and dogs have a late social development period, with dogs being most imprintable prior to 4 months of age. We mesh together very nicely and have stood the test of time.

MAD POETS SOCIETY

The Country Boys

now

There is an RSL Club where everyone meets It is the Country Boy Band that delivers the beat This live band can hold a tune While the women and men create their cocoon

He is an instructor I am told Fred Astaire moves from long ago By the look of the women they don’t give a toss He transforms their lives as they glide across There are people at the tables that just don’t dance They sit and watch this ceremonial trance

Some dance jive swing or hop The shoes the dresses and the bobby socks It is like stepping back in time on the dance floor room As you sit back and watch each persons swoon There is the lady in black who is very tall Dancing with the man that is very small She has to bend down as she iniates her spin He elevates his heels and smiles with a grin Now there are a couple that bop in perfect time No smile no glance in this lifetime She is thin with long red hair that she ties in a scarf Her dress is the same it is white with red cars But under all that is a tiger I say Hiding in a cave looking for play She is controlled and intricate in every move As her body moulds to the music grove In the far corner are two women dancing the jive Flat white sand shoes on with a dresses so divine Where are the husbands died or left home Sorry it is new age leave that alone Now in the middle of the crowd just burning the floor Is a young man all the women adore They line up just for a chance to swing Hang onto his hand to be with him Smiling and laughing as he spins them around Age and time are showing

How people unite and listen to the beat Dance with the music and look at their feet Some make mistakes and go the wrong way But you learn pretty quickly which turn to obey Some make a living out of teaching these moves We all want to dance kiss and swoon Look good in that dress and move our hips Feel young and energetic and bare our bits Retreat to the chair and have a drink While the men grab their breath And look for a chance to meet That new lady new love a soul or a mate But chances are it just a dinner plate Internet meet ups are a new age thing The photographs lie and the women are not keen The picture had hair and a flat chest Now this guy is in a real mess You can be short or tall fat or thin Male or female and all join in When the music starts and you hear the beat Find the rhythm and your feet Look for some space on the dance floor Throw your head back and do an encore Now the music stops it get awkward again The Asian man places his

hand and then The red head looks around pretending to be dumb He does it again but it is on her bum When all of a sudden she stops and looks down Their eyes make contact there is no frown

She smiles and laughs and he looks her way Music and movement are the new foreplay These couple are hooked romance is sealed All of this before an evening meal

Christ! Darby “You’re only a man” He plucks up the courage to dance to the beat She shakes her head being discreet Peyton Place has nothing on this You can sit hear all night and watch this list Of men and women from all walks of life Trying to dance to the rhythm of life Written by Sharmayne Kurtz 5/02/2017

Now in the far corner there is Darby and Jane He missed his steps and is going the wrong way She mouths the words” You’ve done it again “

A NIGHT OUT AT SUE’S BAR & GRILL

By Richard Whetlor

I haven’t had as good night out for ages and when Mike Early told me he was having a party at Sue’s Bar and Grill for Deb Neill’s and his Chrissy get together with a couple of guest stars to play along side, I thought yes to the question Mike had asked “Why don’t you come later on tonight, it will be a really good night, great live music”. I called Allan the Butcher from Woorim Beach Meats to see if he fancied a night out and it was on like Donkey Kong. Arriving at the restaurant it was clear to see it was a busy Friday night, we got there around 7:30pm. Straight to the bar! Live music is great, I love it! Never really went out in

the UK to live music in a restaurant, it was usually a club or a pub with music playing through speakers. Well, where I went anyway, not to say that there wasn’t any live music of course! The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone was happy, having a good time and some dancing and/or singing to the live music. The ‘Muso’s’ did a Really good session and I enjoyed the night, met loads of nice people and, at one point I even had a go on the tambourine and think I was in beat? Mike was singing so I decided to also have a go and never got any feed back which was nice, because I know I can’t sing. Still I was game and I tried to sound like

a pro :0) Earlier i was in the kitchen with Sue and watching her cook, whilst she was talking to me and there several steaks cooking behind her, all different requests for rare, Medium rare etc. I mentioned in our conversation that the steaks were going to burn but Sue looked at me without saying anything. I knew she was all over it and I forgot that she has been doing this for decades and, literally, could do her job with her eyes shut! Master chef! We will be interviewing Mike Early and Deb Neill for our next publication, so watch this space for more details and more unique interesting local content from The Bribie Islander or MINI. Have you booked your Christmas party yet or new years

Brenton Ferguson, Will Clarke, Alex Chapman and Georgia Serginson enjoying their evening at the new restaurant.

eve event? I suggest you pop in to Sue’s Bar & Grill for a bite to eat, either lunch or dinner and book your slot before it’s booked out! Bloody brilliant night out and thank you to the staff, the live music and a great time had by all. Looks like Sue’s Bar & Grill is off to a fantastic start and as a small local business that has already achieved success with Sue’s Cafe & Takeaway in Banksia Beach, is now growing this fabulous restaurant to achieve the same success. Well done to Sue and Chris Venderly on their hard work and achievements, even though Chris has a funny accent, we won’t hold that against him :0) Can’t wait for the next one guys!

THE COMMUNITY VOICE

Dear Editor,

Thank you for a wonderful community newspaper. We look forward to receiving each new edition. Interesting to see the five candidates for the up coming election on page 23 of your November issue. Maybe it might be good to get the”Famous Five” to comment on the subject of a hospital for bribie on their run up to the poll. Dear Candidates, Fahey, Hoogwaerts,Williams,Wilson and Longland running for the up coming election in the seat of Pumicestone. Please find the following letter to which your comments on the said topic would be greatly appreciated.I wait in anticipation of your reply. MP Rick Williams stated in an article in another publication, June 18th that Bribie Islanders would be jumping for joy re the shared millions for the Caboolture hospital. I’m not jumping. Why doesn’t Bribie have its own facility?? Prior to moving to Bribie I previously lived in a country town in the central west of NSW with a population of just 1500. It had its own community hospital with a basic Emergency Dept. and several general wards. I have lived in Victoria, also in a rural town of approx 1000, which had their own small hospital again with ED etc. Bribie now has a population heading towards 18000 so why do we not have a basic hospital???. New retirement communities are popping up and the continual sound of sirens coming over the bridge to rush our fellow islanders to Caboolture Hospital (thank God for our Ambo’s) only highlights the necessity for a BRIBIE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL. Even Kilcoy has its own hospital. How about forgetting the roads and concentrate on the real problem of no hospital

facility. It may not be a “million miles away” to Caboolture as stated but does seem like it when you have an emergency in an ambulance. I also find it unbelievable that there is no late night roster(to at least 9.30pm or so) between our numerous pharmacies to cover a late night chemist on a Saturday night as I recently had to leave my ill wife alone to travel to Morayfield late chemist to have a script filled after waiting three hours for the after hours medical service to arrive. Thankfully she was ok when I arrived back after being away for the one and a half hour round trip. Forget the diatribe. Lets get real. OUR ISLAND NEEDS A HOSPITAL!!

Kind Regards R.Cox, Bongaree. Dear Editor,

generations are so divorced from nature. They live in cities and want city comforts when on vacation. We should encourage them to enjoy the natural wonders - not provide them with more “high-end” facilities which they can find on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. If they don’t want what Bribie has to offer, there is no reason to destroy it just to get their dollars.

Dear Editor,

On the subject of turning down your aircon, why are so many premises set at 22-24°?

I agree that we need to fill all the empty blocks, instead of paying for the current pyramid-scheme style efforts of MBRC to gain revenue by opening new developments before existing ones are occupied.

THE MINI

Has Arlidge ever considered that one reason for increasing mental health problems, is that recent

We all delight in that time of the year when it is around 26°, and we don’t need heating or cooling. So why not try 26°? You’ll be surprised how cool it is, and you’ll save on your power bill. Kind Regard H.Beneke, Banksia Beach.

Car

So Farley wants to double the parliamentary waffle, does he? Because that is what happens if you divide by a half!

Philip Arlidge’s letter cannot be left without comment.

Also, the “high-enders” are the ones who are the chief destroyers of our vital natural environment. They are the ones who prefer “plastic” entertainment, like theme parks and noisy PWCs and 4WDs, which disturb the wildlife of this declared sanctuary.

assault on the senses and probably does nothing to help the immune system, only assisting in the spread of infections.

Kind Regards H.Beneke, Banksia Beach.

When one enters, it is an

However, I do not agree we should concentrate on the high end of the market. There is too little tourism provided for those who have not been in a position to build a fortune. I was 49 before I could afford a proper holiday.
