WE SAY NO TO BULLYING (Bribie says NO to Bullying) PLEASE STOP BULLYING NOW! DON’T BE AFRAID TO
STAND UP & SPEAK OUT By Neil Wilson
During my time as a primary then secondary school student, I was the victim of frequent episodes of bullying, some of which were physical and some not and, as seemed to be the culture of that period, the teachers seemed to take the attitude that I needed to toughen up and they were never interested in taking any action against it. I clearly remember one particular instance when I was tackled from behind, resulting in me falling down onto concrete and laying there
semi-conscious for several minutes. This then meant that I was late for parade and I was sent to the office whereupon I was given six strokes of the cane for being late and, even though I explained why, nobody believed me. From that time on I have had very little time for schools or school teachers. Those who work in the education system in modern times would have us all believe that they take a very tough stance against bullying in the schools and that there are programs in
place to address these issues but, following my recent discussions with parents of children who have been the victims of bullying in our local schools and the community, I do question the effectiveness of those programs.
These discussions have led to people (myself included) with a resolve to speak out against this very deplorable conduct making a decision to work together to develop new and more effective strategies which can then be used, not only at schools, but by other community groups as well. We believe that the more people who are willing to join with us in this campaign, the better our chances are of presenting a strong voice to those who we need to convince. Whilst these decisions have
only been made within recent weeks, there are already indications of support from a number of people in the community and we would welcome a call from anyone whose has experienced instances of bullying, either to your children or perhaps yourself. You can give Kylie Coulstock a call on 0421 235919 or myself on 0448 932484. Please help us make a difference by standing up and saying a very big NO to bullying. I contacted the Bribie Island High School to arrange an interview to discuss these issues with the principal but she was not available. I also sent an email inviting comment from the Media section at Education Queensland but a reply has not yet been forthcoming.

THAT’S A LOT OF BOWLS
Organisers of a twenty four hour bowls challenge which took place at the Solander Lake Bowls Club on last weekend in January are still in a state of awe at the unexpected amount of support they received from both local businesses and the community at large. The event was held as a way of raising much needed funding for twenty nine year old father of two Jordan Grant who is a c4 incomplete quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair after being the victim of an accident in 2012. Solander Lake Bowls Club Greenkeeper Dan Pritchard, Jordan’s brother in law,

got together with club staff member Jaydene Hughes to arrange the fundraiser and, along with Jaydene’s husband Anthony, Jordan’s dad Trevor, Charlie Neave and Jordan’s brother Alex, they played a total of 250 ends of bowls over the twenty four hour period. During the challenge, each bowler played an incredible sixteen hours and when the final bowl was put down, Dan’s blue team were declared the winners. Dan told me that he could not believe the total amount that was raised. ‘I had hoped that we might be able to raise somewhere around the three thousand mark between the donations and the proceeds of the raffle,’ said Dan. ‘When we came off the green, I was told that the figure was at $9,400 and then the club made that up to an even $10,000. give their donation to Dan at the Solander Lake Bowls Club and he will pass on any money received to the fund.
There is an ongoing “Go Fund Me” campaign to help raise the $60,000 that Jordan requires for stem cell treatment that will hopefully allow him to walk again. The campaign is called “Help My Dad Walk Again” and the family are hoping that people’s generosity will result in the target being reached. Also, if someone would like to donate by other than the Go Fund Me page, they can
The result of this rather unusual fundraiser has demonstrated to Jordan’s family just how caring the local community really is and Dan said that the family and the organisers are so grateful for the support. ‘There are just not enough ways to say thanks to this wonderful community,’ Dan told me. ‘We want everyone to know how much their help is valued,’

ALMOST DIDN’T BOTHER
By Neil Wilson
A last minute decision to enter her artwork in the 2018 Faber-Castell Urban Sketching competition on Facebook has produced a surprising outcome for Bribie Island artist and photographer, Kathrin Dierich. Kathrin, a local resident for fifteen years, has said that when she sent in her entry, she really wasn’t expecting to get anywhere. ‘It hasn’t sunk in yet that I have won first prize and I’m black and blue from pinching myself to make sure that it’s not just a dream,’ she explained. ‘I wouldn’t have got there without the amazing support

As the winner of the competition, Kathrin will not only receive $1,000 worth of Faber-Castell art supplies but, due to the competition being run in conjunction with The Art Gallery of New South Wales, her winning entry will be displayed in the gallery and an excited Kathrin told me that she can’t wait to see it in there and get a photograph of it. When I spent time talking to Kathrin a few days after the result had been announced, she was making preparations to fly to

IT’S A LONG WAY BACKWARDS By Neil Wilson
Once upon a time, (and no, this is not a fairy tale) I spent many years as a heavy vehicle driver and one bloke that I used to work with always said that if semitrailers were meant to go backwards, they would have a steering wheel at the rear. THE LONG WAY
ROUND TO BRIBIE! Burnett Heads Episode 1 By Sabine Von Graz
going on a 15 month trip of misadventure in a bloody big rig around Australia, on a mission to find the place to call home. Our plan was to start our trip heading South, however my father Herbert from Austria decided, that in my 27 years of living here, now was the perfect time to come for his first visit to Australia to celebrate his 80’th at the Barrier Reef!
Hi there, here is just a quick rehash in case you have missed the introduction from the last Bribie Islander. My short stories are all about our family, Richard my hubby, Ginger our then 9 year old daughter and myself,
Flexible is our ‘middle name’ and so we changed tack and left our rented house in Mapleton to our new tenants, locked up the double garage packed to the rafters with our belongings, furniture and spare car, and headed North to meet my father in Cairns. Our journey got up to a rocky
start with the arrival at Burnett Heads and by that I don’t just mean the rocks on the beach… It all started with the ‘parking in’ and a larger than usual on-looking crowd, checking out the ‘oversized rig’ (32 foot 5th wheeler) and how we possibly get it into any spot, let alone the allocated one… Richard was ready for the deed, while I was still hopping around like a stunned rabbit with no real task at hand apart from totally confusing Richard of where to go with the big van. I was dashing around to the other side of the rig, while in full speed, getting my undies caught on the water supply pole! I was being snapped back and forth like in a cartoon

In slight distress I frantically tried an intricate maneuver to untangle myself without undressing myself. Meanwhile Richard had free range to park the van without anyone even noticing, due to my ‘side show’. However this was not our only experience of this sleepy Burnett Heads, as apart form an amazing bike path, endlessly leading along the foreshore sea to the turtle beach and Bargara, there is also an amazing array of aggressive wild life. Not one bike ride passed without being attacked by multiple magpies, plovers or by a massive amount of sandflies if you fell off your bike on your escape. Ginger had a particular bad fall, cutting a curb and slamming into a pole! At least this incident did not draw any blood like our first

“What is being done about bullying in schools?” Nicki
Being a mother and former Teacher Aide, I understand the serious and heartbreaking consequences of bullying in our schools. Our State Labor Government has put in place immediate measures to combat bullying, such as the establishment of an antibullying taskforce. “Why does gov allow private health insurance premiums to rise so much every year when this results in people cancelling their insurance due to affordability thus resulting in more people using the public health system?” Andie
This doesn’t make sense to me either, Andie. This year, we’ve seen insurance premiums skyrocket, doubling the rate of inflation by 4 per cent! Meanwhile, the pre-tax profits of private health insurers have increased by 7.3 per cent in the 12 months to 2017. That’s $1.86 billion before tax being pocketed by these already incredibly wealthy corporations. I’m with you all the way on this, which is why I’ll be taking to the next election a policy to cap private health premiums by 2 per cent for two years. For families in our area, this means a saving of around $340 to household budgets. I’ll also be advocating for the Productivity Commission to conduct a comprehensive review into private health insurance schemes.

At the rear of hangar 102 and Complete Aircraft Care sits an aircraft which, when fully restored, will be a testament to the unwavering determination of one man to achieve a goal that was set many years ago. David Kingshott was only fifteen when he commenced his training as an aircraft engineer and it was in this early part of his career that he first discovered his passion for the twin engined Dakota C-47A. ‘I remember one day at Shoreham airfield in East Sussex when a Dakota landed with serious engine problems,’ Dave told me. ‘After it had

similar facilities would be very welcome.
Following ongoing requests by residents, the provision of extra off leash areas has now been confirmed. Division One Councillor Brooke Savige told me that a dog park is about to be constructed on Bestmann Road East, adjacent to the Sandstone Point Sports ground. Provision for this is in the current budget and construction will begin in the near future,’ said Cr Savige. ‘As well as the one at Sandstone Point, we are also in the process of selecting a suitable sight for a dog park in Bellara,’ she said.
Division One Councillor Brooke Savige is passionate about making sure that there are safe places to exercise our furry pals
I am sure that these extra facilities will be of great benefit to local dog owners and it is good to see the Moreton bay Regional Council recognising the need to cater for the ever increasing number of dog owners in the area.

Entertainers of the Island
FEB/MAR 2018 - ISSUE 14
By Neil Wilson
BOBBY GUNN The one undeniable fact about any piece of music ever written is that it has a beat, be that very discreet or very evident and in the case of music which is performed by more than just a solo artist, that beat is most often kept by the drummer. Whilst to date in this series I have features a variety of performers who sing and play various instruments, I have never written about the career of a drummer so for our “Entertainer of the Island” in this issue, I take a look at a man whose music career has spanned many decades, local entertainer, Bobby Gunn. Bobby (born John Robert but because his dad’s name was Jack, he was always known as Bobby) grew up living with his grandparents and, in 1951 he became a victim of the world polio epidemic causing damage to his right arm. Now we know that people learn to play musical instruments for various reasons, whether it’s because they have a musical family or their talent is discovered at an early age but in Bobby’s case, his ability as a drummer came about following a suggestion by a physiotherapist that drumming may help him to recover from the effects of polio. “My grandmother took me to Palings Music Store and

It so happened that Bobby was friends with the son of the Bardon cop and he was interested in singing and song writing and they got together and the two of them used to practice in the cell at the rear of the Bardon police station. ‘After a while I got to know a few musos and one day I got a call from a bloke by the name of Col Collis who needed a drummer for a gig at the View World in South Brisbane,’ said Bobby. ‘He told me that I didn’t need to bring my drums as there was a set at the pub. The bass drum was like something from the Salvation Army band and the snare was terrible. I would have been able to do as good with a saucepan,’ he added. After a few gigs with Col and then playing with Norm Messinbird at the Brunswick hotel for two pound a night, Bobby joined a band called The Hucklebucks and their gigs were at Cloudland on Saturday afternoons and Tuesday nights. Bobby related that on Saturday afternoons, the Bee Gees used to come to Cloudland and as the band was practising, the Gibbs used

With the Moreton Bay region being the home of many environmental and geographical wonders, it seems fitting that the Bribie Island Seaside Museum is currently featuring an exhibition that explores all the nooks and crannies of the area and is entitled “Hidden in Plain View” The display was officially opened on February 9th with those who attended able to hear guest speaker Dr Ian

A SACRED EXHIBITION By Neil Wilson
In an recent exhibition in the Mathew Flinders Gallery in the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, artists Deidre Nelson and Christine Miles joined forces to present a thought provoking display entitled “Disintegration of the Sacred.” The exhibition, which ran in the gallery until February 11th, revolved around the demise of so much that we hold sacred due to the shameful contribution to environmental destruction that is continually made by mankind and featured coats that were crocheted from plastic shopping, newsprint covered twigs, rubbish collages and a structure which was made from plastic bottles. Christine Miles, currently studying for her Bachelor of Visual Art at the Canberra
University Southbank Campus, describes her contribution to the exhibition as “looking at the fundamental nature of the psychology of our generation to have immediate gratification at the expense of the environment.” Coexhibitor Deidre Nelson says that her work was motivated through her belief that these days we look to the forest, beaches and wild places to renew and find ourselves again. ‘In this exhibition I make small offerings, a few twigs and plastic bottles as a gentle reminder of what we truly treasure and hold sacred,’ she explained. For those who would like to expand their knowledge of being creative, the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre is continuously the venue for

To reconcile individual health and herd (or group) health, that is the challenge… Vaccinations are very safe for the individual, and are essential for herd health too. In times past, there were higher rates of negative vaccine reactions. Current vaccines have never been safer or more effective. Without greater than 90% of a population vaccinated, dangerous illness can continue to exist and circulate. In the pet world, the real danger is to pups that are too young
to be fully vaccinated, and very old or sick pets. If vaccinations are allowed to slip, middle aged strong pets will become vulnerable again to deadly diseases, such as Parvovirus and distemper. Vaccinating your pet is very easy with our home visit service.

meet the volunteers
DEBBIE GILLETT
Whilst most of us are finally settling down to our normal routine after a time of overindulging and relaxing during the Christmas holiday break and the changes to our lifestyle that were brought on during the holiday season, there are some members of our community for whom this time of celebration was not so joyous and would probably have been even less enjoyable were it not for the wonderful support provided by the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre and the dedicated team of volunteers who are responsible for it’s ongoing operation. In previous issues of this magazine I have told of a number of these volunteers, some who have been at the centre for many years and some who have joined the team in more recent times so for this month’s “Meet the Volunteers” I would like to introduce one of the newest team members, Debbie Gillett. Having moved from New South Wales to our beautiful island with her husband Peter twenty six years ago, Debbie, a proud mum of three boys, Scott, Matt and Luke, is a well known member of the
community, having worked at both the RSL and the Bribie Island Bowls Club in catering and then as an A.I.N. in the aged care industry. Debbie explained to me that, while working at her job in aged care, she was the victim of an unfortunate accident that ended her career. ‘You are always busy in aged care and one day, while in a hurry going up a set of stairs, I tripped,’ said Debbie. ‘At first, tests revealed that I had fractured my ankle but, after this was operated on, I was still in pain and they discovered that I had also broken my hip. A resulting recent hip replacement meant that I could no longer go to work,’ she added. As I had already realised that Debbie was not the type of person who enjoys doing nothing and is passionate about being able to help people, it came as no surprise to me when she said that she decided to become a volunteer at the Neighbourhood Centre because she just could not sit around at home. ‘I just had
to get out and do something and wanted to be a useful member of the community,’ said Debbie Having commenced her role as a volunteer in December, Debbie works in the reception area for two days each week and is also training in the really important role of emergency relief worker. She told me that being able to play a part in helping those who come to the centre is really rewarding and it is such a great feeling to know that you have helped to make someone’s day a bit brighter. The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre at 9 Verdoni Street in Bellara is open from Monday until Thursday and provides access to such a large variety of services and these include legal help, financial counselling,

family counselling, access to Centrelink, free food through the Oz Harvest program each Tuesday and of course, emergency relief to those who find themselves in a less than desirable situation. There is also a thrift shop where a great range of goods can be purchased at bargain prices and as well as what is available at the centre, the staff there are able to refer clients to other outside services. Anyone who would like to find out more about what is available at the centre, or perhaps about becoming a volunteer, should either call in to 9 Verdoni Street or contact them on 3408 8440 between 9am and 3pm. In case you were wondering, yes, Debbie is mum to well known Broncos and State of Origin footballer, Matt Gillett.

LEADING THE WAY IN YOUTH
DEVELOPMENT
As we are all well aware, there are a number of organisations that play an important role in the training and development of the youth within the community and one of these which continually strives to live
up to their motto which describes them as “The Leading Youth Development Organisation” is the Australian Navy Cadets. The organisation operates ninety units throughout the country and I recently had the pleasure of being given a guided tour of our local unit, T.S. (Training Ship) Koopa by two of the staff members, Petty Officers AJ Hughes and Dave Withers. The T.S. Koopa has been operating since 1990 and, due to it’s location on KalMa-Kuta Drive at Sandstone point, is ideally situated for a naval training station with direct access to Pumicestone Passage at the back door. Included in the equipment that is available for training are a number of vessels including an open runabout, an RIB which was donated to the unit by the Australian
Navy, two sailing boats and a number of canoes. The cadets attend the unit each Friday evening from 6pm until 9.30pm and during that time, are instructed on all things nautical as well as carry out extensive drill and parade training which is an important part of learning discipline. Obviously, the cadets spend quite a bit of time out on the water and on occasions have the opportunity to sail on the tall ship “The South Passage.” Petty Officer AJ Hughes explained that during their time on board the tall ship, the cadets get to do a lot of the work such as handling the sails and driving the ship. Another very special activity that the cadets participate in from time to time is weapons handling and when this is on the agenda, they participate in live fire exercises at the range at Burpengary
Flags of the various countries that are part of the International Sea Cadets Association Petty Officer Dave Withers, who served in the Australian Navy on a variety of ships including the HMAS Perth and the HMAS Sydney, is in charge of weapons, boat maintenance and ceremonial training including the Drum Corps. ‘We are often asked to attend ceremonies at venues such as Anzac Day and the Drum Corps always play an important role in that,’ Dave told me. ‘We are currently going through the procedure of training more drummers,’ he said. Hughes mentioned that the T.S Koopa has a very special reason to be proud of their reputation. ‘Each year, cadets are selected to participate in exchange programs with other cadet units from around the world,’ said AJ. ‘This is all governed by the International Sea Cadet Association and in 2017, the association held it’s annual conference. During the conference, the delegates were invited to inspect one of the local units and apparently, because they had all heard such good reports on the T.S. Koopa, they insisted in coming here. We held a special day for the visit and the parade was inspected and the salute taken by a Captain from the Japanese delegation. I’m told that they still haven’t stopped talking about it,’ he added. When the two staff members showed me through the well appointed training facility, I was impressed by the spacious layout of the various areas and this included both the male and female accommodation and the kitchen (whoops, I mean galley) area. Whilst the beds in the female accommodation are conventional double bunks, the male accommodation is furnished with bunks which were donated from the HMAS Manoora. The unit has accommodation for twenty male and twenty female cadet as well as ten staff members of each gender. Dave and AJ explained to me that the unit had to make the necessary alterations to the premises to be declared as fire compliant before it could be suitable for accommodation. The Navy Cadet trainings are supported by the Australian Navy which provides all uniforms and some funding for activities. “As well as the funding from the navy, we

The cadets train in a number of vessels rely on support from parents and the community at large to continue providing the necessary activities,’ said Petty Officer Hughes said. ‘Local organisation Busy Fingers have been very generous over the years and theyare providing funds for some renovations on the upper level in the near future,’ he said. Petty Officer Hughes also pointed out that the very reasonable fees that are required for membership of the unit are all used to fund
the activities. Not only is being a member of the Australian Navy Cadets a wonderful way for young people to prepare themselves for the future, for those who are considering a career in the navy, this is such an important step toward the recruitment process. Anyone who would like to find out more about the T.S. Koopa can send an email to aj.hughes1@navycadets.gov. au or give AJ a call on 0400 884662.

Balgowan were spotted making their way along the waterfront on what appears to be for all intents and purposes, a skateboard
but, on closer inspection, these very strange means of transportation only have one wheel. These guys purchased the One Wheels second hand on the internet and they told me that there is nowhere in Australia that offers them for sale. ‘They are manufactured by a company called Future Motion in California and, although there used to be a place in Brisbane which sold them, it has since closed down,’ Steve Balgowan told me. ‘They are self balancing and, after a charge which takes about twenty five minutes, they are capable of running for over 1.5 hours and taking us between ten and fifteen kilometres,’ he added. This is just one of the many unusual sights that we see in our travels so, watch this space.

A number of people have enquired about brewing Kombucha and now SCOBY is available in the store. Scoby is a mother culture to brew Kombucha. Scoby stands for Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast. Symbiotic means that the bateria and yeast strains live together in a complex, mutually supportive community. Kombucha is a fermented tea known as the ‘immortal health elixir’ by the Chinese and originates in the Far East around 2000 years ago. Kombucha is a beverage with tremendous health benefits. Due to the fermentation process, it contains large quantity of healthy probiotics. These probiotics line the digestive tract and support
immune system. Kombucha generally contains seven strains of probiotics along other nutrients. Also it has vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin B1, vitamin B3, vitamin B12 and various acids and esters that give the drink its characteristic tang and fizz. B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12, are known to increase energy levels and help to improve overall mental health. Kombucha is renowned for gut health; it has beneficial acid, probiotics, amino acids and enzymes. Kombucha contains powerful antioxidants and can help to detoxify the body and protect against disease. Antioxidants help to reduce inflammation, oxidative stress that can damage cells and decrease the risk for cancers.

Kombucha has powerful antibacterial agent and good for the cardiovascular system, it helps regulate cholesterol levels and helps maintain a healthy liver. How to make Kombucha You need 1 large glass jar (or bowl), 1 piece of cloth or dishtowel to cover the jar to secure the glass jar. 1 SCOBY disk, filtered water, if possible. ½ cup organic cane sugar (for 8 cups of water) if available. Directions: 1. Bring your water to boil and add the teabags and sugar, stirring until the sugar dissolves. 2. Allow water to sit and the tea to steep for about 15 minutes. 3. Let the mixture cool down to room temperature, and add the tea mixture to your jar/bowl. Drop in the SCOBY disk and 1 cup of pre-made kombucha. 4. Cover the jar/bowl with a peice of cloth and by using a rubber band or some sort of tie. You want the cloth to cover the wide opening of the jar and stay in place but be thin enough to allow air to pass through. 5. Allow the kombucha to sit for 7–10 days, depending on the flavor you’re looking for. Less time produces a weaker kombucha that tastes less sour, while a longer sitting time makes the kombucha ferment even longer and develop more taste. Some people have reported fermenting kombucha for up to a month before bottling with great results, so taste test the batch every couple of days to see if its reached the right taste and level of carbonation for you. MAD POETS SOCIETY
ABOVE THE CLOUDSBy Hazel King
Fleecy, soft, cotton wool clouds Tinted pale grey with one splash of sunset coloured hues. The sky’s canopy pale blue With a pink tinged horizon As the sky thrusts through the cotton wool clouds.
To unknown destinations.
Slowly descending earthward now Excited anticipation of meeting loved ones. Journey’s end And a bright new beginning to welcome. By Hazel King Bribie Island
Gliding across the clouds like an alpine skier, With the noise of the jet engines Masking every other sound. Red beacon light Flashing against the fuselage, Warning other sky travellers of our presence.
SOMEONE TO GROW OLD WITH
Then slowly the darkness descends And the cabin of the sky bird becomes brighter, Lighting the inside against the outside darkening For those intrepid travellers journeying together
Sitting there on the beach, Imagining you beside me, Perhaps with your strong arm Across my shoulder, Sitting quietly and enjoying just being there together.
CHRISTMAS TREE ANGEL
cupboard, he discovered the elves had drunk all the cider and hidden the liquor.. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.
When four of Santa’s elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the PreChristmas pressure. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where. Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered. Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the
Surf sounds, gulls cries, Waves washing on the shore, Couples passing by hand in hand, Some silent, others engrossed in each other.
For things which can never be,
Tears began to well in my eyes Spilling over, slowly tracing a pattern down my cheeks. Like raindrops on a window pane On a cold winter’s evening.
The ache in my heart Seemingly inconsolable Knowing that circumstances Will not permit anything but a growing friendship For the moment. The balmy sea breeze And the warm summer’s sun Dry the tears before they can fall. And somehow the fresh sea air And the summer’s breezes, Bring about a peace, Knowing that our friendship Is special and not too many would understand. Your care and concern beyond compare Knowing your thoughts are with me
LAUGH RIOT
Just then the doorbell rang, and an irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said very cheerfully, ‘Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn’t this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?’ And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree. Not a lot of people know this.
MY LAST ROUND OF GOLF
While golfing, I took a quick turn to avoid hitting a rabbit hole, and accidentally overturned my golf cart near the base of a tree on the fringe of the cart path, and severely banged my head. A very beautiful and extremely attractive lady who lived on the edge of the golf course heard the noise, ran out of her villa and shouted, “Are you okay?” As I looked up, I noticed she was wearing only a silky see through robe which was partially open, revealing what appeared to be a VERY, VERY nice figure. “I’m okay I think,” I replied as I pulled myself out from under the twisted cart. She said, “ Follow me over to my villa so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head, then you can rest a while, and I’ll help you get the cart back on its’ wheels later on.”
From time to time Brings about an incredible feeling of awe That I may have just a small place In your very large heart. Oh that I would meet Such a man as you To grow old with and to love. By Hazel King Bribie Island

“That’s nice of you,” I answered, “but I don’t think my wife will like me doing that!” “Oh, come now, I am a nurse” she insisted. “I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly.” She was really pretty, and very persuasive and being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, “I’m sure my wife won’t like this.” We walked to her place just 100 feet or so away, and after a couple of Scotch and waters and the bandaging, I thanked her and said, “I feel a lot better, but I know my wife is going to be really upset, so I’d better get going.” “Don’t be silly!” she said with a smile, letting her robe fall even more open. “Stay for a while. She doesn’t have to know a thing, is she close by?” ”Yes”, I answered, “Probably still under the cart….”

Ever attempted to draw a person and ended up with an image that more closely resembles the missing link than the person? Well, if you answered yes to that, perhaps you should consider enrolling in the upcoming Life Drawing classes at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre that commence on February 28th. The classes begin at 6.30pm, will be all about

Anyone who would like to have a bit of fun andtry something completely new should book themselves into Noelene Johnston’s Mixed Media Art Classes that start on march 7th. Dear Editor,
Hi there I found a few items that may be worthy of putting into print as food for thought? “Sometimes the message has to be blunt so you will see the point” “Its very easy to avoid criticism: say nothing, do nothing, be nothing” “If at first you don’t succeed you’re running about average” Kind Regards, Farley Dear Editor, After seeing so many negative stories in the newspapers and on T.V about Queensland Health, I for one would like to share a positive one with the readers. Approximately four months ago, I was diagnosed with a heart problem. From day

one, every person that I came in contact with (from the administration staff, my G.P, to the cardiac surgeon) were understanding, kind and caring; nothing was too much trouble for them. The nursing staff at Prince Charles Hospital were the same, sometimes under very difficult circumstances and I cannot thank them enough. The hands-on workers in Queensland Health must rate as some of the best in Australia. P.S. if you get a chance to give to the Heart Foundation, don’t hesitate;you never know, it could be you next.

N.E.Street Bribie Island Dear Editor, WHY: (If any person so desires, arrive at your own conclusions) Unfortunately, in my opinion, some sad pathetic, individuals go through life doing very little other then attempting to ridicule, insult or and intimidate at various, possibly selected times, potentially future well meaning in most instances, future positive achievers. To be candid, I personally am in no way interested in spending any
of my time, concentration or attention on trying to discover or even to take the time to understand why. “ Good Riddens” I say and the only thing positive to come out of a situation such as this (if there really is one} is while these types of individuals such as these spend time continuing to insult, ridicule or talking down any particular person at any random or particular time is the fact that, in my opinion while they are perpetrating these potentially selfish, possibly self serving, in most instances totally misguided or possible thoughtless activities they are leaving some other potentially future, in most instances innocent poor victim alone.
