REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS Anne Matthews
Dear Readers, We would like to wish you all a very happy Easter and hope you are all enjoying some time off with friends and family. Speaking of family, the front cover is a picture of my beautiful little great-niece Ella Chalk. She was our cover photo for Easter last year, her lovely mum Shannon took both photos, so thanks very much for letting us use them, Shan! And in my completely biased opinion Ella is the most beautiful little girl who is growing up way too fast as time seems like it is flying past! This Easter I hope everyone can have the chance to relax, catch up with loved ones and take time to reflect on the meaning of Easter. Whether you are religious or not, there are still some valuable lessons we can take and apply in our own lives. As the story goes, Jesus was betrayed, trialled, beaten, rejected, and hung to die on a cross on Good Friday. (Pretty sure I would be debating that that was not a good Friday, as it doesn’t seem much fun to me). Then a miracle occurred, and Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday, to show us that through all adversity, there is hope. According to the Bible, Jesus' death was a sacrifice for the sins of others, but his resurrection represents something even more powerful: the potential for rebirth, salvation, and renewal of faith. and the hope that loss leads to something new. Anyway, my point is, that if we apply what Easter means to our lives today, we may be able to become a nicer community and better people ourselves. It has been a difficult few years, our businesses have suffered, the vaccination debate pitted us against each other, and we lost precious time with loved ones, but having faith we will get through difficult situations, gives us hope that there are better days ahead. Treat each other with love and respect, (something that badly needs to be resurrected) stop and help, be humans with empathy again instead of ripping each other apart for laughs and at the end of the day, we will all be better off for it. As individuals and a community! I hope you all have a wonderful Easter and please be careful on the roads! Take care, Stay safe,
Cherrie

PDO THREADS +
Filler Package
$
1460 $
1290
What are Matrix PDO threads made from? Our mono threads are made from Polydioxanone – an absorbable polymer. This material is both flexible and durable. Results may be seen in 6 weeks and will continue to improve over 2 to 6 months. While the threads slowly dissolve, their effects may last up to 12 months.
Dermal Filler As we progressively age, our skin loses its natural elasticity and we may notice the first surface wrinkles. As you know, wrinkles get deeper and turn into unaesthetic lines with time. This makes the face look tired, saggy and less radiant. It’s time to put an end to the ageing process!
A Unique Filler for Each Treatment Area We have dermal filler designed with dual purpose: to improve the appearance of both superficial lines and moderate to severe wrinkles. After a careful personalised facial analysis, Registeted Nurse Lisa can determine the best possible treatment plan for the patient based on their unique needs, skin condition, age, lifestyle and depth of the wrinkles.
Where can this product be used? • Correction of fine lines and superficial wrinkles (crow’s feet, perioral lip lines) • Tear trough treatment under the eye • Naso-labial folds(lines either side of nose), chin, cheeks, marionette lines, hollow temple area, earlobe reshaping • Hand rejuvenation including volume loss treatment on the back of the hands

I Have you ever experienced dizziness? WHAT IS DIZZINESS?
HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY
t is a vague term that encompasses various symptoms and conditions, one of which is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV. A condition involving your inner ear where an individual will experience episodes of dizziness and imbalance usually in association with head movements. This can be a debilitating experience for an individual that can significantly negatively affect your quality of life. BPPV can affect anyone of any age at any time, although the older population experiences a higher incidence of reported cases. Many people that do experience these episodes go without treatment, mistakenly assuming it is “normal” or “part of getting older”.
Did you know your Physiotherapist can assess and treat your dizziness? After a thorough history and assessment your Physiotherapist will determine what treatment course is suitable for you. The good news is that BPPV is very treatable with a simple at home exercise that can be taught to you by your Physiotherapist. These treatments usually see rapid improvements in individual’s symptoms and can be paramount to minimising the risk of falls in the elderly population. If you have been experiencing BPPV, consider talking to your Physiotherapist. Daniel O’Connor and Alexander Piva at Bribie Island Physiotherapy and Lifestyle Gym provide treatment and advice for those suffering from dizziness.

HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY star Christine, the amazing healer Ben and the centre’s leader Leanne’s yoga classes. Christine is a soulful and calming presence in the massage room with more than a decade working in natural therapies and energy healing. Recently Christine provided deep relaxation treatments unlocking the ability of the body to heal itself. It’s well known in natural therapies many if not most physical, mental, stuck emotions, stress and disease can be dealt with using hot stones. These volcanic rocks release tremendous benefits, working with what’s gained through ayurvedic massage motions. These sit perfectly with the time afforded by relaxation - an express train to deep meditation. Christine’s special sauce is to add healing energy to aid the whole self into balance, harmony and homeostasis. Bliss will be your reward. The other team member is Ben, an amazing healer with plentiful modalities on offer. However, hypnosis is his passion.

The TRUTH About
TEETH
WHITENING
T
he Australian Dental Association (ADA) has unmasked some home truths about teeth whitening with new consumer findings. Of a survey sample of 25,000 Australian adults conducted for the ADA, the peak dental body found that 22% of us have whitened our teeth - an 8% increase since it first started recording this data in 2017. More than twice as many women than men have teeth whitened, and it’s most popular in the 24–34-year-old age group. But as of 2021, whitening treatments done by dentists is a downward trend with unfortunately only 1 in 3 adults whitening their teeth under the supervision of a dental professional – with 19% of respondents using take-home kits and 14% opting for in-clinic whitening. The other two thirds of Australians teeth whitened by other means, with all three of these methods on the rise: • 39% bought a teeth whitening kit online • 16% bought an over-thecounter product like strips or gel from a pharmacy or supermarket • 9% used whitening services provided by someone other than a dental professional. “The theme for WOHD is 'Be Proud of Your Mouth', and people seem to be trying to do this by undertaking cosmetic procedures to lighten their teeth,” said Dr Mark Levi, ADA
12
spokesperson and Sydney dentist who focusses on whitening procedures. “But as people do so, the ADA has unmasked some home truths about teeth whitening based on tracking of consumer oral health habits. “The problem with home treatments that are not supervised by a dental professional or being treated by someone other than a dental professional is that you’re exposing yourself to a range of injuries including soft tissue burns from peroxide, extreme pain if the bleach gets into a crack or hole, blotchiness, and damaged enamel - and even swallowing the bleach. “A high percentage of my patients who’ve tried to whiten their teeth themselves report pain - but when done correctly, there shouldn’t be any pain. That’s why seeing a dentist for teeth whitening is best.” He added: “People need to get their oral health assessed first to ensure there are no cracks in teeth, untreated dental decay, leaking fillings or other unresolved dental issues that could cause pain, discomfort, damaged nerve pulp - or even more serious problems down the track. One problem with buying off-the-shelf products is that you may not know how effective that product will be. As Emeritus Professor Laurie Walsh from UQ’s School of Dentistry reports, “the blue light sold with peroxide whitening gels speeds up the

The Bribie Islander
tooth whitening process by warming the gel or even better, by using special light-based chemistry. “But there are some peroxide products on the market where the gel does not include chemicals that these lights will work on, so they’re essentially being sold as a gimmick.” Another issue is that in some products the bleach trays are not customised to mouth shape so with a one-size-fits-all tray, peroxide from the bleach can escape and burn the mouth’s soft tissue, or worse, be ingested. “Sometimes too high a concentration of peroxide in the bleach is used and many of the online and off-the-shelf products are unregulated so it’s a bit of a wild west and you take a chance with them as you just don’t know how well they will work,” said Dr Levi.
is to see a dentist to assess
A further concern is that online and over-the-counter products sometimes make claims of using ‘all natural’ ingredients, which do not stand up to scrutiny - some products contain sodium chlorite, an industrial chemical also used in swimming pool cleaning. Dr Levi added: “Nor do many people know that whitening doesn’t alter the shade of existing fillings, veneers, crowns, or artificial teeth such as dentures which are already in the mouth. Yet there are no clear warnings of this lack of effect visible on sale websites or on over-the counter products. “The safest option recommended by the ADA
the extent of the whitening
your mouth first, to see if it is suitable for whitening and for any problems to be fixed. Then you can decide with your dentist on a course of action to ensure you get the best outcome.” The ADA has long held serious concerns about this unregulated space and has written to the ACCC on several occasions about the availability of teeth whitening products that contain illegally high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which have no safety warnings, as well as concern over false advertising claims about the nature of product ingredients, effect consumers can expect, and the claimed expertise of non-dental practitioner teeth whitening service providers. As the peak dental body, the ADA has asked that the ACCC and its regulators act to better protect Australian consumers by enforcing compliance with relevant Australian laws and educating consumers about the health risks associated with undergoing teeth whitening procedures without first seeking the advice of a dental professional.

COMMUNITY LINK As Community Link enters its 28th year of sharing the ANZAC spirit with young Australians, we join with our island’s school students to be thankful to the founder, Scotty Barrett for his vision.
Scotty was intent on creating a bonding link between the RSL, our youth and the community. With support from the RSL,
fellow members and the community, his dream evolved into a national program for school students. And for some of the island’s students there was an added privilege of being taken to Canberra to attend the dawn service and lead the march at the national ceremony. Bribie Island being the only
school allowed to do so because of Scotty’s link. Covid has impacted our biennial Canberra visits, but we hope this will lead to a bigger contingent marching at home. Any Community Link members from over the years are welcome to march with us.

"My work is conceived to uplift the viewer, is intensely focused and very time consuming. Viewers are invited to sink into the work like a meditation and open their heart to the beauty and life energy within the bloom. These paintings offer peace, tranquillity and joy. My paintings are built from many layers of transparent oil paint, each one adding luminosity to the work. Strong contrasts, vibrant pure

transparent colour, intense detail and nuances of tone and light are a strong feature of my work" Also present is a passion for good design as the basic structure. Harmonies of line and form, the surprising fine detail in nature infused with living energy as light combine creating high impact visual engagement. It is meaningful to me that these elements still, uplift and enhance the human condition. Cecily Slade’s works will be up all of April at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre 191 Sunderland Drive Banksia Beach, Bribie Island.

‘36 HOLES PER DAY’
HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY ‘36 holes per day’ Golf Championships are no longer as numerous as they once were on District calendars, yet Qld’s Sunshine Coast Wide Bay Burnet District Womens Match Play Championships sponsored by Sporte Leisure, is among the more intriguing. Not your typical knockout match play format, the field is limited to 30 starters for each division (off the stick and handicap) and then broken into 10 groups of 3 where players go head-to-head in three-way match play for two consecutive days. A fresh draw after each 18 holes provides players with new competitors. Each Player competes in eight matches and acquires points on each result. A rolling point score determines the final 18 holes with a seeded draw determining the action. Members from all 31 Golf Clubs in the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay District are eligible to enter with entries closing on April 10. A strong field is expected for what is the last hit out for many before the Pennant Season commences. COURSES: The SCWBD Sporte
Leisure Match Play is being hosted over two Championship courses with all players playing both Noosa and Mt Coolum Golf Courses. Noosa Golf Course was the pioneer of golf in the Noosa area and continues to stage major tournaments and test the skill of top golfers. Situated in the centre of Noosa Shire, the club’s attractive championship-rated 18-hole course is set over 6,016 metres. The tranquil natural bush setting has an abundance of wildlife and interesting flora. Mount Coolum Golf Course sits at the foot of the iconic Mount Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. With water on twelve holes, it provides a perfect challenge for the serious golfer. Mount Coolum Golf Course features tight fairways with well placed sand traps to be a challenging par 72 course. The event is scheduled for Sunday 24th and Monday 25th April (a long weekend) from 7.30am.and galleries are welcome at no charge. Check out the website for more details. scbdwg.com.au

S
CATTERING MY PARENTS’ ASHES WAS ON MY MIND BUT I WAS WARY. FOR STARTERS, I THINK IT MIGHT BE A TINY BIT ILLEGAL. PLUS, I SAW WHAT HAPPENED TO DONNY IN THE BIG LEBOWSKI (A BAD CASE OF BEREAVEMENT BLOWBACK) AND TO RICKI GERVAIS’ CHARACTER’S DAD IN AFTERLIFE. Neither my mum nor my dad was especially religious or spiritual in life, but my brothers and I wanted to make some kind of statement about their passing. It seemed like scattering their ashes (mixed together … I know, a bit creepy and presumptuous) at the beachside suburb where they grew up, met and fell in love would be, well, appropriate. Touching even. Days earlier, like any conscientious criminal, I’d done a recce. I found a pleasant spot with a seat where the grandchildren could rest quietly looking at the ocean, checking their iPhones and contemplating their dear grandparents.
thingy. Impossible. After about ten minutes, an oversize screwdriver and a hammer, Olympic swearing and sweating, and more tears (of frustration this time) I was no longer wistful and sad. I was mad. Damn you, Dad! Why must you be so difficult? One last frenzied attack (think Netflix serial killer) and I’d made a hole the size of a tennis ball in the receptacle. Small gusts of my father were starting to escape. Did I mention the wind? The weather had become unseasonably blustery. I carefully tipped a small portion of dad into the jar of mum’s ashes (Mum died in 2000 – we buried her ashes under a tree in Dad’s back yard, so her portion dug up from the base of the tree was mainly gravel and rocks. Sorry Mum). Then I unceremoniously closed up the original container with gaffer tape. Oh well.
Task number one. Release Dad from the receptacle. I was emotional when I put the box of my dad’s remains on the table on my back deck, ready to liberate a respectful portion of his ashes for our little ceremony. Miss you, Dad.
Next, my brother, daughter, nieces, and I head off to the beach to do the deed. There was a definite sombreness, a gravitas about what we were about to do, and my family doesn’t really do gravitas at the best of times. Or should that be at the worst of times? By the time we reached the designated spot the wind had really picked up. Let’s face it, it was blowing a gale. The sea was angry-grey and whipped into a maelstrom.
I’m not sure what these boxes are made of. Maybe kryptonite? Or the stuff they use for black boxes in planes. Talk about hermetically sealed! I tried to open the plug
We all got out of our cars, hugged, removed shoes, and yelled greetings at each other over the howling wind. My brother had brought a bottle of Guinness to add to the ceremony. I

shyly showed the pickled cucumber jar that contained Nana and Papa. This would be their last trip together. Down to the water’s edge, we stagger, the mighty wind almost blowing us all over. I stumble into the grey, roiling waves, my brother beside me with the opened bottle of Guinness. By this stage, all sense of decorum was lost, as we struggled with the cyclonic wind, the wild water and uncontrollable laughter. On my count, the contents of the jar along with the Guinness were hastily tipped into the ocean. The wilful wind scooped up the ashes and the Guinness and blew them across the water (we had the sense to empty the contents upwind) and we all stumbled back up the beach overwhelmed by the wild weather, the stinging sand and the absurdity of it all. We face-timed another brother in Cairns and a niece in Melbourne and all sang our parents’ favourite duet, ‘Quicksilver’, the weather making hearing our harmonies and keeping in time near impossible. Pathetic. We couldn’t wait to get back into our cars and into the calm and warmth of a local Italian restaurant. It was here that we finally reflected on Mum and Dad, sharing our favourite memories, a few tears, and funny stories. The irony of this whole sorry affair? Dad really loathed the wind, and Mum hated the water. Ashes to ashes. Seriously, what was I thinking?

NEVER TO OLD TO LEARN
Barry Clark- U3A Public Relations
When does a Senior become an Oldie, or even qualify as an old Fart? However old you are, you are never too old to learn, and over 2000 such people on Bribie are enrolled in more than 150 different classes at the University of the Third Age (U3A), enjoying the company of likeminded people, and participating in new and stimulating things. From humble beginnings 30 years ago, Bribie U3A has grown steadily to be among the very best in Australia. This was acknowledged at last week’s AGM, by President Maree Mosslar, and outgoing Treasurer Ian Corin, when they spoke of the achievements and challenges of recent years. After almost two years of Covid lock downs and limitations, Bribie U3A has remained closed for the first term of this year, while compliance and infection remained a concern to members. Hard work by the Committee, in particular the Program coordinators, will ensure U3A reopens safely for Term 2 after Easter, on Tuesday 19 April, with a full program of daily classes, with just a few vacancies.
COMMITTEE
At the AGM, President Maree Mosslar was reelected, together with her former Committee members, and a new Treasurer.
New U3A Committee 2022-23 (L to R front) Greg Sibthorpe (Treasurer) Jenny Faulknau (Sec) Maree Mosslar (President) Judi Irvine (Functions) Margaret Spooner (Vice Pres) and (L to R rear) Barry Clark (PR) Kaye Keene (Reception) Rose Barnes (Program) Robyn Connolly (Program) Chris Clark (Program) Juri Linins (Vice Pres)
The Committee, plus more than 100 volunteer Tutors, Receptionists and helpers make Bribie U3A a very successful business. In recent years
Bribie sponsored new U3A operations at Caboolture and Beachmere. Bribie is one of 36 U3A’s throughout Queensland, represented at annual Conferences, and works closely with 5 other U3A’s in Moreton Bay.
LIFE MEMBERS
Since it started 30 years ago Bribie U3A has had 9 Presidents and awarded 4 Life Memberships. At last week’s AGM three new Life Members were recognized for their years of service, both as Committee members and other volunteer contributions. Past President and Life Member Ann Brooks spoke about the significant contribution of each recipient, and President Maree presented Awards.
LIFE MEMBERS x 3 - (Photo L to R ) Shona Shergold was recognized for years as assistant Treasurer and Theatre Outings, Roger Platt for Computer systems and Technology strategy, Past President and Life Member Ann Brooks, and Barry Clark as Bribie History Tutor and Publicity/PR.
CLASS VACANCIES
The complete timetable and summary of classes can be seen on web site www.u3abribie.org. au . There are minimal vacancies in some classes, including an opportunity to learn and play some exciting new Twentyfirst Century Board Games or investigate special interest topics such as the A-Z of Aussie Myths and Legends, Development of the Modern World, Bribie’s Natural Environment, and Australia History. Vacancies also in classes for Birding, Cardmaking and a variety of exercise and dance classes. U3A will be closed until Term 2 starts on Tuesday 19 April. Enrolment in the above classes with vacancies can then be done in person at U3A on weekdays between 9am and 3pm. Annual membership is just $10 and class fees are $15 per term. New and returning members are welcome to discuss their programme options during the first week of the term. Enquiries can be made by phone on 3408 1450.

Your resident Accountant with over 25yrs experience As an Australian resident, income from all sources both in and out of Australia is to be included in your annual tax return. Any associated tax paid regarding that income can be offset against your Australian tax assessment. As long as there is a tax treaty with that country, most offset tax will reduce your tax bill but many are not refundable on any excess. Pensions received from other countries are included using the rate of exchange on the date of each payment or just the amounts received into your Australian bank account. Foreign income received and/or deposited to a foreign account must also be included. The actual income received will be the correct figure to include, not the amount you have transferred over. Anyone who hold investments overseas, including shares and property must disclose income received. Sale of investments held overseas also attract Capital Gains Tax and the taxable component is included as income. Taxpayers must expect that their tax affairs will be reviewed by the ATO regardless of where their accounts are located. By not making a voluntary disclosure you risk penalties of up to 90% of the tax to be paid. FOOD, WINE & ISLAND TIMES soul sisters, Julie Earner and Nicole Parsonage-Watts as Lucille and Doris respectively. Patricia Leo rounds out the full cast as Mildred. We’ve been having fun at rehearsal, playing with accents, exploring Jewish custom and gesture and enjoying dress-ups with costume. What To Look For In 2022
Despite the craziness that has been the last couple of years, 6Mangrove Productions Inc. managed to get itself off to a flying start in 2021. The October weekend of three one act plays, “Wonderfully Wicked Women” was the first staged production for the company and was very well received. Audiences were eager to see what next year would bring and we managed to garner the interest of several new members, both potential performers and crew. So it was not surprising, but nonetheless delightful, to see some new faces come along to audition for our first production of 2022, The Cemetery Club. Written by Ivan Menchell, The Cemetery Club, was first produced in New York in 1990 and features three best friends who meet once a month to catch up on gossip and visit the graves of their husbands. That is until a chance meeting at the cemetery threatens to ruin it all. The cast, that is comprised of both experienced performers and those new to the stage, is well into rehearsal and having loads of fun bringing to life this ‘Sex and The City” style comedy for the more mature of age.
We are also excited to announce the following events planned for the rest of the year:
We look forward to seeing you at a performance of The Cemetery Club.
• The launch of a new tradition, The Pumicestone Passage Annual Stage Writers’ Symposium in October; for the closet writer in us all.
2022 MEMBERSHIP
• A bus tour to the Noosa Arts Theatre production of ‘Money & Friends’ on 13th August; for those that just love great theatre wherever they can get it. • Our inaugural Christmas Pantomime; fun for all ages…and maybe a pie fight or two. We are also hoping to bring you at least one Special Screening Event but are still working with Bribie Cinema’s on an appropriate date amid a plethora of new movie releases planned for the year. 6 Mangrove Productions continues to work with Moreton Bay Regional Council Bribie Project supporting youth activities on the island as well as building our relationships with other local groups.
6 Mangrove Productions Inc is excited to produce this comedy as a Dinner Theatre Experience on the last weekend in April. Ticket price of $40 per head for an evening performance, includes a 3 course meal and a glass of wine, as well as the entertainment of the play. The Sunday Matinee will be $35 per head and include a shared platter and glass of wine. We will open the doors at 6.30pm for entrée, with the performance beginning at 7pm. With only 60 seats available for each of the three performances, follow this link to TryBooking.com to secure your seats now. (Due to catering requirements, bookings will close one week before production and no tickets will be sold at the door. Leading lady, Ida Goldstein, will be played by the talented Hazel Mepham, whom you may remember from ‘Roses are Red, My Love’ in ‘Wonderfully Wicked Women’, last October. Hazel is partnered with leading man, Glen Telford as Sam Katz and gloriously supported by her fabulous 26

rom the humble meat tray to Holden cars and a herd of cows - an amazing array of items have helped fund the Endeavour Foundation’s initiatives over the years. But a custom-built home in Maleny is the most impressive, and expensive, prize so far. While early draws featured homesteads in rural Queensland, complete with cane farms or cattle, the 2022 Sunshine Coast Hinterland prize home swaps the paddocks for powder rooms. Endeavour Foundation Head of Lotteries Kirsty Moore said the $2.19 million luxury Maleny home showed just how far the Endeavour Foundation Lotteries’ fundraising efforts had come over the past 60 years. “In the early days, we were relying on meat trays and hat parades to fund our valuable programs,” Ms Moore said. “In 1962, we offered our first prize home a property at Cecil Downs on the Darling Downs. Before long there were art unions for seaside blocks, sugar cane farms and cattle properties across Queensland. “Our prize homes have changed over time to

reflect the great Australian dream. Now we can offer a custom-built four-bedroom home with two living spaces, an outdoor lounge with a wood log fireplace, two bathrooms, two powder rooms, mudroom and an inground pool.” Offering a high level of luxury, the sprawling home features Herringbone dark wood floors throughout, integrated appliances, Velux skylights and even a Ralph Lauren pendant light in the lounge. Set on 3071 square metres, the expansive property boasts stunning views and comes complete with a pool and a John Deere rideon mower. Prize Home #442 was one of the most expensive builds that Endeavour Foundation has ever committed to and building designer Peter Taylor says the home is a showstopper. “The house is absolutely stunning and has captured the incredible views,” he said. “It has a strong connection to the outdoor living verandahs and pool, and the indoor spaces are very inviting, warm and calming. The lucky winner is going to really love
living in this magnificent home.” Life-changing wins for six decades In her role as Head of Lotteries, Kirsty has had the honour of breaking the news to multiple winners – something she says is her favourite part of the job. “People scream, they cry, or they don’t believe me at first. It’s not an understatement to say that winning a prize home will change your life for better,” Ms Moore said. “But by buying a ticket, you are also changing the lives of many people living in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. “If it wasn’t for the support of the lottery draws, we would not be able to fund our initiatives which help provide employment, accommodation and greater social connections for people living with an intellectual disability.” Tickets are now available for this incredible property, which is open for viewing at 155 Tallowwood Street, Maleny. To celebrate 60 years, Endeavour Lotteries is conducting a number of promotional giveaways throughout the ticket sale period. This includes the 6 Decades of Lotteries Daily Draws (30 May – 4 June), with great prizes being given away each day for six days, including a $2000 Freedom Furniture Voucher plus a one-hour consultation with the Maleny home’s interior designer Kate Cooper, a $2000 JB Hi-Fi Voucher, and $2000 cash. HOT-CROSS BUNS with Boiled Eggs.
W
hen I was young, High days and Holidays always followed the security of what was, to me, a pleasing ritual. The same phrases were repeated, with the same food, the same people, the same places. As a child, I hated any disturbances in these repeated observances and, misguidedly, thought the entire world would be following the same customs. My most unhappy times were when these expectations were not fulfille. I have written about our Christmases, spent with my Mother's family previously,
but now it is time to turn to Easter. It may come as a shock to all good Aussies, it certainly shocked my Australian husband, to realise that in the UK at that time, there was no holiday for Good Friday. It was a work-day like any other! However, there was one gastronomic observance on that day that shook him rigid! This concerned breakfast. It was not so much the heated-in-the-oven hot-cross buns, or the soft-boiled eggs that accompanied them. The buns were liberally buttered, at least when butter was “off the ration”, and used to dip into the salt and peppered

I told him that this was a sacred tradition, and one he had better become accustomed to, as he would be expected to observe it for as long as we both shall live. I am not sure whether this tradition originated in Yorkshire, my father's birthplace, or Leicestershire, where my mother hailed from. No matter, it is one to which I still adhere! However, there are hot-cross buns and hot-cross buns! Does anyone but me remember the best buns of all? Those emanating from Mr Kling's Bakery at Bongaree. Large, full of fruit, properly spiced, cross on top, with never a suggestion of a chocolate chip! Who was responsible for that heretical idea? Shame on you! Not only were these Easter buns a special treat, but one which was not available all year round. As Ecclesiastes 3 says, To everything there is a
Season! I do not hold with this modern notion of Anything at Any time. Half the joy of special foods was that of Anticipation. Even strawberries have lost their flavour ever since they became available throughout the year. I digress. Easter Saturday was not associated with any particular traditions that I remember, although, since it was the weekend, we might take the opportunity to motor into the countryside and have a picnic with friends. Egg and cress sandwiches, of course. The big day was Easter Sunday, one which we children of middle-class parents would receive that which we had been panting for all week! A hollow chocolate egg, wrapped in bright foil. This would just be waiting for us, on the window ledge, no attempt at concealment. It was only when I came to write this article that I did the research to discover where the tradition of the Easter Bunny hiding coloured eggs in the garden
for children to find, came from. According to Mr Google, that fount of all knowledge, it arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare, a zoological mystery, called the “Osterhase”. A quaint tradition that, with a few tweaks, has given joy to children everywhere. Hence, our very own Easter Bilby. I gather that the Easter Bonnet is another American import, although the tradition of wearing one's “Sunday Best” for Church was already well established.
eggs, dried fruit, glacé cherries, almond meal and mixed spices. This cake had a marzipan topping, traditionally decorated with eleven marzipan balls representing those disciples who had not disgraced themselves. Judas was not given a place on the cake. Daringly, Aunty Vera, would break with tradition and substitute the marzipan balls with sugared almonds, to general applause. This was, by far, Grandpa's favourite cake! His slice was twice the size allotted to everybody else. We did notice!
Certainly, we can blame our American cousins for another anathema, the candy egg! I am prepared to tolerate our European neighbours who hardboil, then dye and decorate their own eggs. Perhaps they know no better, but give me a chocolate egg, courtesy of Mr Cadbury.
Actually, I always feel rather sorry for Judas. Not only did he not get to enjoy his illgotten gains, but had a lonely, uncomfortable, self-inflicted death, followed by permanent notoriety. I like to think of him and Lucifer, having a quiet drink together, mulled wine perhaps, given the ambient temperature Down There, consoling each other by saying, “It really wasn't meant to end like this”.
Sometimes we would find ourselves spending Easter staying with Grandpa and Aunty Vera. She would bake a Simnel Cake, made with butter,

Brekkie At The Bowlo. Held at the Bribie Island Bowls Club on Tuesday March 29th the breakfast was not just a fundraising event but also a chance to increase awareness about the important work the B.I.K.E.S. organisation provides directly to local Bribie kids. Paralympian and world champion swimmer, and B.I.K.E.S. When kids are able to get the most out of their education, they are able to create better futures for themselves. “B.I.K.E.S. works with all three local state schools through their chaplaincy program to directly help local children in need by providing school supplies, uniforms, footwear and computers, as well as payments for camps and excursions. “Anything that helps to ease the cost of providing children with an education, because an education has far reaching effects beyond the school gates that can help end the cycle of poverty.”

hy talking relieves isolation
The old saying “a problem shared is a problem halved” has stuck around over the years, and for good reason. An opportunity to voice how circumstances and occurrences impact us helps relieve the burden, even if it doesn’t fix the problem. The idea too, that men don’t talk has stuck around, however a recent study has uncovered that men are not necessarily reluctant to talk about life issues, they simply seek a safe place in which to share; one they feel confident

Bottling up thoughts and feelings, particularly in the wake of life-changing events or trauma, can lead to growing social isolation, which in turn has an enormous impact on mental health. Some of the expected characteristics of socially isolated men include a steadfast observance to traditional masculine norms – that they are expected to be strong, self-reliant and in control. They typically describe themselves as ‘fixers of problems’ and not ‘people who talk about problems.’ Patrick Westwood, who has spent 15 years as a first responder for NSW fire agencies and now works for Resilience NSW, saw a need for a men’s group in his southern NSW community that encouraged social connection and an opportunity to talk. “It’s been a tough couple of years with bushfires and COVID lockdowns and restrictions, “he says.
"It's affected a lot of business and families, individuals and men and there's a lot of pressure on many people out there. Things are going to remain in this upset state for a while and people need a safe place to talk about what's happened to them and how they are feeling. We - men don't tend to do that so well
to talk about what’s going on for them. “Men are encouraged to share but they are welcome to just listen until they are ready,” says co-founder David Pointon. “It’s as much about helping others as it is about helping yourself and sometimes an attentive ear is all another man needs.” Belonging to a Men’s Table
or troubled can really help someone before illness or despair develops.” Further work is required to support the growing need of Australian men for the social connection that is essential for mental health and The Men’s Table are planning to launch more Tables, currently 52 tables. George Abramowicz from Sydney saw such a need on Bribie Island and sent out an invitation to form a table. The overwhelming response was very gratifying. Over 120 women like the idea of the men in their lives to belong to such a table.

any people died within the walls of Brisbane’s old Boggo Road Gaol during its long history. Not surprisingly, former wardens and prisoners believe that it is haunted. There are ghost stories that have been handed down by guards from generation to generation since the nineteenth century. Even today, retired officers and ex-prisoners claim that they had a few ghostly contacts, and one in particular, who has haunted the gaol for over a century. It is the ghost of Ellen Thomson that they claim is the dominant apparition that haunts the old prison.
The GHOST of ELLEN THOMSON By: Al Finegan 36

The Bribie Islander
That the Gaol was haunted was something rarely mentioned outside its walls when it was in operation, as officers largely kept their experiences to themselves. Usually when they talked about such things their mates would laugh it off or even ridicule them. Prison prankster Ron Darby, a veteran officer, loved nothing more than to play jokes on new officers by running a rolled-up sheet up a wall on the backtrack, as it was called. Occasionally on a dark night, cloaked with a sheet, he would ride a bike slowly along darkened hallways, appearing to float, leaving terrified new wardens in his wake. Then occasionally an officer would cry out in terror. And it wasn’t a prank – just inexplicable. Since its closure in 1989, touring visitors have sworn they had unexplained experiences. Some say they have been touched, grabbed or even spoken to by a spirit. Many claim to have seen a female figure on the upper floors of the cellblocks – leading to speculation as to who it might be. They are always told it is the ghost of Ellen Thomson. Sometimes startled nighttime visitors jumped in fright, claiming that a spooky threelegged cat had rubbed himself on their legs or had been heard meowing. It was undoubtedly
“Tripod”, Ellen’s only companion in the last three weeks of her life – Tripod, aptly named, had only three legs. If you knew Ellen’s story, you would understand why she still tries to terrify the living. Not only was she the only woman to have been legally hanged in Queensland, but it was also the appalling injustice of her arrest, trial, and execution that would make any soul angry and restless. Just who was Ellen Thompson, and what was her crime?
Ellen Lynch, 11 years of age and her sister Mary, 9, arrived in Australia on the 6th of April 1858 on board the ship "Joshua". The ship's manifest lists their widowed mother Mary Lynch as a native of County Cork, Ireland. They would join her sister residing in Goulburn, NSW. When only 16 years old, Ellen married William Wood and they soon had two children. In the early 1870's William took his family to the Palmer River gold rush in North Queensland. Sadly, William was killed in a mining accident. The gold mining areas were muddy and dusty. A woman alone with young children would have had a very tough time just trying to find enough uncontaminated food to feed her brood, so Ellen moved to Cooktown. It was a time of huge excitement with the gold rush attracting people from all over the country. She found work as a laundress to the miners coming in from the diggings, but her living conditions would have been far from ideal. Moving to Port Douglas about 1878, Ellen commenced work as housekeeper to William Thomson who had selected a farm on the Mossman River, eventually marrying him a couple of years later after giving birth to another daughter, known as “Little” Ellen. William would have been looking for
REGULAR FEATURES someone to help him manage the farm, and the arrangement of a more stable and secure life for Ellen and her children would have been the attraction that sealed the deal for them both. There were reports that William was jealous, violent and drank too much, at one stage throwing a kerosene lamp at one of Ellen’s daughters because she refused to conform to his wishes that she marry his brother, then aged in his fifties. He also threatened Ellen, throwing a knife at her. At a time in Australia’s history when equality of the sexes meant nothing, Ellen was at a distinct disadvantage as she was also illiterate. Despite this, she was a woman ahead of her time. She was not the normal docile and obedient wife and was known as hardworking and gregarious, a devoted mother with a strong sense of justice, who felt restricted by her inability to read or write. One time, when the Governor passed through the district she went along with other women to meet him, hoping to persuade him to provide their children with a school. She wanted her children to have the opportunities that she had not. In 1886, William hired John Harrison to work on the farm as a labourer. He was flirtatious with Ellen, but when challenged by an angry William, they both denied there was any impropriety. Over the last few weeks of 1886, William increased the tone of his accusations. It all came to a head in January 1887 when William was shot dead. The police immediately arrested Ellen and John, charging them both with William’s murder. An overjoyed press seized on a front-page story that they believed had everything - infidelity, betrayal, jealousy, rage, collusion - and bloody murder - and to hell with the facts. As a sign of the narrowminded attitude toward women at the time, and despite a lack of evidence, their supposed affair was published as fact, and of course, it was Ellen, the femme fatale, who was to blame. The story was huge news, and the journalists were in a fever of excitement at the attention they had generated, as the story dominated the telegraph lines throughout Australia. They branded Ellen a “loose woman”, and John Harrison her latest “fancy man”. They went on to portray William as the innocent party, a victim of an insidious plot by a sinful, grasping woman and the man she seduced to remove her husband, so she could own the farm. The public lapped up the ever-expanding story. The court case was pythonesque, riddled with bias and prejudice that we would find laughable today if it were not true. The judge in the Townsville Supreme Court, known as a hanging judge, had, according to his notes, made up his mind beforehand. He had also been given evidence that some of the witnesses were paid to ensure a conviction, and he took no action. A reporter at the time wrote that the Judge was, “… contemptuous of Ellen, harsh, uncompromising in the extreme and clearly prejudiced”.
During the trial, William Thompson was portrayed as helpless and vulnerable, being backed up by several witnesses who took great pains to explain that he was sober on the day of his death, despite having had no contact with William for days before his murder. Out of court, the opposite was described by those who knew him, adding that he was also well known for his violent temper. The trial can only be called a farce. Consider the following: The jury was all male, as was normal for the time, as women could not possibly have the intelligence required to serve(?). Her court appointed lawyer was a country solicitor with no criminal law training who even apologised for his lack of experience, saying, “He wasn’t up to it”. The law at the time did not allow for character witnesses to be called on an accused’s behalf. Ellen was not allowed to take the stand and her lawyer could only cross examine crown witnesses. The prosecutor made it clear, Ellen not only murdered her husband, but was involved with a much younger man. She was not allowed to argue or put her point of view across to answer any of the charges against her. It was not a fair trial, even by the standards of the day and it was pointed out by many at the trial that there was definitely, “reasonable doubt”. The Judge in convicting Ellen and John stated, "Prisoner Ellen Thompson and you, prisoner John Harrison, have been found guilty of the crime of murder on evidence which I must say to my mind is quite sufficient. One of the jury has thought to make a recommendation of mercy on the grounds that he is of the opinion that there may have been a quarrel between the murdered man and Harrison immediately preceding the murder. I will, of course, forward that recommendation to the proper authorities. I can give you no more hope than that. That you, Harrison killed the old man Thompson, I have no doubt whatever. The jury have found that you did so, and I confidently believe that Thompson's wife was present at the time, aiding and abetting you. You committed a most cruel murder, and you did it, in my opinion, for sake of gain. Nothing now remains for me but to pass upon you both, the sentence of the law. I have no option in the matter. The sentence that I have to pass on you, Ellen Thompson, is, that you be taken to the place
from whence you came, and thence to the Brisbane gaol; and thence on the date to be appointed by the Governor-in-Council, you be led to the place of execution, and that you be hanged by the neck until your body be dead." There remains a lot of conjecture regarding Ellen’s part, if any, in the planning and execution of the actual murder. Ellen proclaimed her innocence to the end, not understanding that she could be an accessory to the crime when she didn’t actually pull the trigger. As there were no condemned cells for women, Ellen’s last few weeks were spent alone in the deserted hospital block at Boggo Road Gaol with only Tripod for company. In the week before the execution was to take place, there were several pleas for clemency for Ellen by several businessmen in Brisbane, and the Harbour Master and Customs Official in Port Douglas. All were ignored. On the eve of execution, Harrison swore to his Priest that he alone shot and killed William Thomson, and that it was in self-defence. The Priest’s plea to the Governor fell on deaf ears. The execution went ahead as planned. On her last day, the Chief Warden reported that Mrs. Thompson conducted herself with the greatest respect towards the Sisters of Mercy, and Father Fouhy, who visited her in the last half-hour of her life. She bore up bravely to the last, and even when standing on the scaffold her fortitude was remarkable. Attended by Father Fouhy, she stepped on to the drop, and her voice was unshaken as she said, "Good-bye everybody. I forgive everybody from the bottom of my heart for anything they have wronged me in this world. I never shot my husband, and I am dying like an angel." Only once, within a few seconds of the fatal moment was there a perceptible quiver in the unhappy creature's voice, when with almost her dying breath she murmured, "Oh, my poor children, take care of my children will you, Father". The next instant her body was swinging in mid-air. Justice was indeed swift in 1887. Ellen, at 41 years old, and John were arrested on 6th January 1887, convicted in May, and executed on the 13th June. There were no legal appeals allowed and none of the appeals for mercy considered. They were both buried in unmarked graves in the South Brisbane cemetery. Today, the graves are well marked with headstones and lovingly tended by her descendants. It is obvious that she was a victim of the society in which she lived at the time. Even so, it was a huge miscarriage of justice, overseen by a clearly biased judge, a smart prosecutor, and an inexperienced defence lawyer, all influenced by public opinion generated by a self-serving press to provide an unforgivable result. That Ellen still haunts the gaol in protest at her treatment is no wonder. Issue 163 Apr 8, 2022 37

LOOKING back at BRIBIE’s FUTURE.
Barry Clark Bribie Island Historical Society
Long term residents, and new comers, like to be reminded of Bribie’s unique past by reading my regular articles. We all hope Bribie continues as a special place long into the future. Since 1912, people have come to Bribie Island to appreciate the unique history and community spirit. Things change, but the reasons you came, and many thousands of others before you, is the special charm of this island and its clearly defined geography and environment. This article reflects on aspects of the past, and raises questions about the future. Bribie needs a “Vision” for its future, to ensure it continues to be special 100 years from now If you do not know where you are going ….any road takes you there.

SPECIAL BRIBIE Bribie Island has the unique distinction of being the first landing place, on what is now Queensland, after the First Fleet arrived in Sydney. Years later three Sydney convicts The Bribie Islander
were washed up on Moreton Bay islands before the Penal Colony was established in Brisbane. Other than a few remaining Aboriginals, no one lived on Bribie Island before 1900. When a Jetty was built at Bongaree in 1912 the island opened up as a unique destination for steamship excursions from Brisbane. Within a few years, it was a booming tourist destination, with thousands coming regularly for cheap camping and fishing holidays, enjoying isolation and abundant wildlife. For 50 years Bribie remained isolated, self-sufficient, creative, imaginative and independent. The few residents developed a unique approach to diverse business opportunities to meet tourist needs and seasonal variations. They were special people. It was called a “Zoo without a Fence” and sometimes known as “The Three D’s” as it also attracted more than its share of Drunks, Dogs and Defacto’s.
REGULAR FEATURES BRIBIE NOT EASY
It was a three-hour steamship trip from Brisbane, often with rough water across the Bay, which attracted rich and poor to this haven of peace, fun and solitude. The resident population of less than 100 people got their first honorary Councillor to represent their interest on Caboolture Shire Council in 1933. For him to attend a Council meeting involved a two-day journey by ship and train with an overnight stay. Bribie was part of the Caboolture Divisional Board, established in 1880, as a huge area of largely undeveloped land stretching all the way from Kedron Brook to Maroochydore River. Caboolture was the closest town to Bribie Island, but there was no road access until after World War 2. Over the years, different areas and regional communities sought independence from Caboolture, and the new Councils of Maroochy, Kilcoy, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe and Caloundra were established. Bribie remained part of a smaller Caboolture Shire. A large military training camp was constructed on the site of the now Sandstone Point Hotel in World War 2, a rough road was built from Caboolture to a ferry crossing at Sandstone Point. After the War, with the growing popularity of private motor cars, a barge began operation as a vehicle ferry to Bribie. This eventually resulted in Steamship trips ending in 1953, but Bribie remained a very popular destination as the residents and visitors had created their own successful economy. Bribie residents wished to be independent and establish their own Shire, and three unsuccessful attempts were made to succeed, and establish Bribie’s own Council in 1913, 1931 and 1967. The “Succession” movement continue to be active for many years, and a street parade of large floats was held in Bi-Centenary year 1988. However, sadly, Bribie become an even smaller part of the huge Moreton Bay Regional Council in 2009.
PROGRESS & DEVELOPMENT
For many years from the 1930’s, there had been talk and political promise to build a bridge to Bribie, and this eventually happened in 1963. It was a major event in the history of Bribie, but when the new Bridge finally opened, there was a surprise announcement of an expensive Toll charge to cross it. A Toll of 10 shillings had to be paid by all vehicles crossing the bridge, equivalent to about $16 in today’s money. That huge and unexpected imposition limited the expected resident population and business growth for several years.
The bridge toll remained for 12 years until 1975 when the bridge had been paid for. However, by that time most of the resident population of 1200 were keen that the Toll be retained, to be paid by all non-resident visitors, to fund the extensive maintenance and infrastructure improvements required to support the thousands of visitors. During those years there were proposals to construct a Horse racing track and a commercial airport on Bribie. These did not eventuate, and Bribie was not regarded as part of the “Sunshine Coast”, which did get these facilities. For many years, Council rates for Bribie were considered disproportionally higher than the rest of the Shire, and little of it was spent by Council on the Island. The year 2023 will be the 60-year anniversary of the Bridge opening. We might anticipate the announcement of a new replacement bridge to be built at some future date. Might we anticipate a new “Toll” being introduced to pay for it?
Bribie Island continues to attract more and more residents and visitors. Numbers are set to rise by up to 40% in the years ahead, with increased development and living pressures. We will soon have the next round of Federal, State and Council election, but I wonder if we will have an opportunity to vote for a “Vision” for the future of Bribie.
FUTURE VISION We are all-different and have our own views and ideas about how Bribie could or should be. A bigger bridge, a second bridge, more roads, parking stations, Traffic lights, high rise, public transport etc. Should a new bridge have a toll? Should driving on Ocean beach be limited? Bribie should have an efficient and effective public transport system that meets community needs, rather than big empty buses driving around to a timetable and to places that do not meet community needs. Many suburban roads are too small for big buses. Big buses drive around Bribie empty, because they are available. For the same cost, we could have a fleet of smaller vehicles travelling to all suburbs and required destinations, at more regular intervals. That would keep some private cars off the roads for short local journeys, and meet the needs of more people who do not drive.
LARGE COUNCIL
In 2009, Government amalgamated the three large Councils of Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Caboolture into one enormous Moreton Bay Regional Council. Bribie Island became a very small part of a much bigger Regional Council. The justification for amalgamation was to achieve cost savings, economy of scale and improved services. Today, 13 years later, we have no information or advice about what has already, or will be achieved in future. In the 1930’s, when Bribie had a resident population of about 100 people, there was just one honorary Councillor. Over the years, as the population grew above 3000, Bribie was permitted to have two elected Councillors, representing Bribie residents on the Caboolture Council. These Councillors were very personally involved in virtually all community and group activities and experienced first hand the issues and concerns of residents. Today, with a population well over 20,000, Division 1 has just one Councillor representing a much larger area, including part of the mainland. This is a challenging job for anyone, with Bribie located on the boundary of a large Regional Council. No Council senior or managerial staff live on Bribie, to be involved in the lifestyle and community issues, or personally experience the good and bad things about living here.
INCREASED POPULATION. Our Postcode 4507 is said to have the highest percentage of people over 65 years of age, of any postcode in Australia. This is clearly an aspect of Bribie to be recognised in any “Vision” of the future, as the population is to increase by 40%. There are many elements of a future Vision including Community Services, Employment, Recreation, Transport, Environment, Heritage and of course Life-style. If we don’t recognise and value the special aspects our past and present, we won’t have much of a future. Without a plan it is likely that things will just drift along, largely driven by developers, and Bribie will become just another seaside suburb. I think that would be a pity. How about you? Black-Tailed Godwit – LIMOSA LIMOSA
By: Marj Webber
O
ver the years I have written several articles on the more common Bartailed Godwits so today will write on Black-tailed Godwits which are far less likely to be seen on Bribie Island. A probable place to view them is at Kakadu Shore Bird Roost. The above photographs were taken at Toorbul. Black-tailed Godwits are largish birds 3643 cm in length, 201-300 g in weight with a wingspan of 63-75 cm and an almost straight pink and black bill 7.5-12 cm in length. Females are a little larger with bills longer than males. They are brown birds, less streaked than Bar-tailed Godwits with black tails, white rumps and wide, white streaks in the wings which are all visible during flight. On the ground, they can easily be mistaken for Bar-tailed Godwits but in flight, there is no mistaking the difference. During breeding, heads and necks turn a bright chestnut colour while chest feathers are broken into short streaks. Females are less colourful during this time. Many birds have begun to colour up before leaving for their mammoth journey to the north which is about to begin right now. Black-tailed Godwits have longer legs, straighter bills and are smaller and leaner than Bar-tailed Godwits. While breeding in the Arctic their calls are melodious but, on our shores, during non-breeding, they usually only call when threatened or to connect with each other. Their average lifespan is 5 years, but some birds have been known to live for over 30 years. During the month of August Godwits begin arriving after flights of thousands of klms from Mongolia, Siberia and Alaska to our area, coastlines and inland muddy areas around Australia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and PNG. Although they prefer mudflats to sandy areas, they are often in the company of their more prolific relatives
40
www.thebribieislander.com.au
Bar-tailed Godwits on sandy shores. Their stay lasts till late March- April when they fly off again to breed in the Northern Hemisphere. Some birds, mainly young ones, remain in Australia for one or two seasons before they begin to develop their breeding plumage. After their long flights, their feathers are often damaged, and they have lost a big proportion of their body weight, so spend their time resting and feeding to recuperate and gain weight ready for their next long journey. That is why it is important not to disturb them when resting and feeding. They are more common in northern areas and often congregate in small to large flocks in the inland. It has been estimated that up to 80 000 Blacktailed Godwits spend their summer in Australia and around 160 000 flies the East Asian-Australasian flyway twice a year. When flying long distances, they can sleep using half their brain while still being able to navigate. Preferred foods are insects, worms, frog eggs and tadpoles, crustaceans, and molluscs. These foods are collected by foraging in water, often up to their bellies, and stabbing with their sharp bills into the mud. Aquatic vegetation is added to their diet during migration. They arrive at their grassy, wetland breeding grounds during May in Mongolia, Siberia, and Alaska. Black-tailed Godwits are monogamous, and their partnership lasts for many years. Each year after their long holiday to the south, pairs meet up again in their breeding grounds within 3 days of each other. If one of the pair does not arrive, then another mate is selected. Unattached males perform colourful flights to attract females. Nests are shallow scrapes on the ground usually amongst low vegetation. 3-6 brownish-olive eggs are laid. Both parents incubate the eggs for about 22-24 days.
The Bribie Islander
When the babies hatch, they are guided away from the nests by their parents to wetter areas where there is more food. Chicks fledge after about 25-30 days. The mortality rate in their first couple of years of life is very high. Black-tailed Godwits were first described in 1758. The name Limosa is from the Latin word limus meaning “mud” and were probably named because they prefer muddy areas to the sand. The Black-tailed Godwit was named the national bird of the Netherlands in 2015. Their main threats are disturbances at their roosting sites with people walking, fishing, boating, swimming, letting dogs off their leash, riding horses and driving 4WDrives. Development has claimed some of their habitats in Australia and along their flyways. Water pollution can be a factor in harming their health and erosion may make their grounds inhabitable. In the past hunting claimed the lives of thousands of birds each year. Conservation status has been classified “Near Threatened” in 2006 by Birdlife International. Populations are decreasing.

Don't overfeed your dog
it will significantly impact their health and happiness Overweight dogs are at increased risk of metabolic abnormalities, cardiovascular disease, joint diseases, a lowered immune system, and many other health problems. They also are less mobile and can’t run, play, or do other activities as much as they’d like. Do your pet a favour, feed them the amount recommended by their vet and don’t give in to those puppy dogs eyes when they ask for more!
Touch your dog’s nose
Your dog’s nose should feel wet. The level of moisture will vary between dogs and by the time of year, but a healthy dog will have a cool and slightly wet nose because dogs secrete sweat through their nose to cool down.
Make annual vet appointments
Let the experts examine your dog regularly to screen them for any health issues and to provide you with the best, personalized information to keep your precious pup healthy for many years.
Make a "pet first aid" kit
Accidents and emergencies happen and being prepared with all the essentials to
help your dog is a crucial step in being a responsible pet owner. This is especially important if you take your dog out hiking or camping, whenever you may be far away from help. A DIY pet first aid kit is something every dog parent should have.
Get pet insurance
Emergency and unexpected accidents and illnesses often cost $800 to $1500. With as many as a third of pets needing emergency care per year, this can quickly become a financial burden. Pet insurance can help to cover these unexpected costs, prescription medications, long term health conditions and more making it an important investment for the furry members of your family.
Brush your dog’s teeth
Brushing your dog’s teeth is often overlooked, but hugely important to their overall health and avoiding expensive dental treatments in the future. Make this a part of their normal routine and make sure to use toothpaste made specifically for dogs. With a little bit of time and training, teeth brushing can be a fun activity for your pet every day!
TRAINING TIPS – WALKIES PART 4 The next couple of issues I’ll cover the various problems one may come across whilst out walking either with your dog or another. One of the most common problems I see a lot, especially in small dogs, barking and lunging on the leash towards another dog, sometimes directed at a person. Common problems people do to correct their dog is to tell them to stop, tighten and shorten their lead or pick the dog up, or carrying a spray bottle of water. These will only exacerbate the problem not solve it. First, at all times keep the lead long and loose it is easier to walk away from a problem holding it this way, then on a short lead. Secondly don’t acknowledge the dog whilst he’s barking etc as this may encourage him to continue or he is so fired up that you know longer exist so
it doesn’t matter what you say, he doesn’t hear you. Instead, as soon as he is quiet praise and reward his behaviour. Thirdly by picking him up he will become braver and bolder and you can risk getting hurt yourself. It is much better to walk away either cross the road or turn around and walk away calmly. And never spray water in your dog’s face whilst he is carrying on as he may redirect his aggression on to you. It is important to understand that punishing a dog does not teach him how to behave. What will help him is to walk during quieter times, praising and rewarding his calmness and slowly build on it and eventually the dog will look to you for the reward rather than barking and lunging at another dog. Happy training Yvonne
Yvonne's Dog & Puppy School
Have an emergency plan in place
It’s not pleasant to think about, but it’s crucial that you have a plan for your dog in place should anything happen to you. Make a list of important information about your dog’s lifestyle including how often they’re fed, how much they’re fed, medications, their vet’s phone number, etc. Give copies of this to someone in your life that could take care of your dog in the case of an emergency. It’s also worth your time to ask around and make sure you have at least one or two people who live close by that could help your dog on short notice.

island gardens HOME AND GARDEN
by Peter Schinkel there are so many beautiful varieties, some with more
yellow than orange, some with a splash of blue or red. All you have to do to maintain these is to chop off the spent flower stalks and about twice a year chop a few stalks from around the outside to keep the desired spread. They like lots of sun and will thrive in wet or dry years. There are many more not-tootall plants perfect for back in the garden a bit deeper, or to hide the fence a bit, and we'll check some more out down the track, but in Issue 163 on 8th April, we're going to look at some beautiful autumn colours. Until then, thanks for reading
H
ello all, welcome back and welcome to Autumn. Wow, we've had some good rain and a nice slight downward trend in temperatures to enjoy being outside in the garden at more times during the day.
Sometimes we need a little height here and there without having to constantly prune down tall plants (around 1.5 to two metres). In issue 159 we looked at Jazzie Tibouchinas, Dwarf Wattles and Leptospermum, all of which not only add just the right height but have beautiful flowers too. Today, let's look at the three more (pictured here). While the scent of a Murraya (mock orange blossom) is quite stunning, we'll be pruning three or four times a year to keep them manageable. That's not a lot of maintenance, but some of us are looking for extra-low maintenance. Check these out.
and happy gardening. On the left is an old favourite - the Poinsettia. The oldies are mostly 3-metre varieties but nowadays there are lots of one to 1.5-metre plants with various coloured bracts. Pictured here is a red one, but there's also lime green, cream, soft pink, and a newcomer called glitter. They'll all grow maybe up to your eye level, they like part-shade, and show off their colour from late Autumn to Spring. In the middle is a mediumsized Gardenia. There are large shrubs and ground cover/dwarf varieties, so be sure to find this beauty which grows to 1.5 metres. With flowers that have an amazing aroma, sometimes we need white to help the other colours in the garden stand out. They'll handle some sun, but place in a part-shaded area for best results. And on the right is another long-time favourite - the Bird of Paradise. Left unattended some varieties can become massive and messy, but that is only with years of neglect. There is a variety with the purple flowers that grow to 8 metres. Only buy if you have a large space away from pipes. The good news is

BEACHMERE
HOME AND GARDEN
Community Hall Garden Update BCGI has been asked to help redevelop the front gardens of the Beachmere Community Hall in Progress Avenue. Each Saturday, members have been clearing and re-planting the gardens. This has really made a difference to the area, and we have received many positive comments from passers-by. It has been great to do some actual gardening while we await Council approvals for our own garden to proceed. We will be moving two sculptures into position as well. Garden member Marina and Karen from Beachmere History and Research have unearthed the story behind the sculptures which tells the story of local indigenous fisherman catching mullet with the assistance of local dolphin. This will be included on an interpretative sign at the garden. We had to cancel our regular morning gardening session on the last Saturday of Feb due to the rain but hopefully we are back into it this month. As you can see in the photos, the gardens have really been transformed. OSCA HAS LEFT THE BUILDING Last year Beachmere Community Garden won the tender to adopt OSCA the On-Site Composting Apparatus. We can finally announce that OSCA the Composter has been picked up (literally) from Bribie State School and taken to a temporary location before being set up at the garden. We can't wait to get OSCA set up and turning all your food scraps and garden waste into beautiful compost. Thanks to Jill, John and Bill for their hard work removing the compost bays and fence so the truck could get in. Also, thanks to driver Paul for expertly squeezing the truck into some tight spots to pick up and drop off OSCA. Finally,
thanks again to Bribie Island State School for holding onto OSCA the last few months. We can't wait to invite you to the garden soon to see OSCA back in action. CAROLINE AND BOB MOSS SCULPTURE GARDEN It’s funny how one thing leads to another on this community garden journey. While looking at timber for the garden's fence, we ended up in the amazing sculpture garden of Caroline and Bob Ross. The garden showcases the lifelong work of both artists, featuring sculptures and artworks displaying Carol's amazing talents in an array of styles and media with Bob's distinctively styled sculptures interspersed throughout. Carol donates many of her sculptures and has kindly offered BCGI the amazing flower totem shown below. We are extremely grateful for this wonderful act of generosity and look forward to displaying it in the garden. The garden members have been invited back to view the collection, which we will organise after Covid restrictions ease. You can view a tour of the sculpture garden on YouTube. Type in "Caroline Moss sculptures" to watch the video. Thanks again to Carol and Bob for the invite, tour and delicious morning tea. COMMUNITY SPIRIT DURING FLOODS An example of the amazing efforts from the local community during the flood crisis. This group of animals was rescued from floodwaters and then housed in the front yard of a property on the main street of Beachmere until paddocks were repaired. WELL DONE 4510!

Meet Jack Martin, Bribie Islands Area Manager for Coochie Hydrogreen. If you see Jack around the area, be sure to say hello and give him a wave! Feel free to contact Jack & the Coochie Hydrogreen team by calling 1800 245 955. Follow "Coochie Hydrogreen Bribie Island" on Facebook to stay informed with the latest information.
The Coochie Hydrogreen Lawn Care Program (LCP) is a year-round schedule of lawn care treatments. These are positioned throughout the year to ensure optimum lawn results. Keeping your lawns a lush green and weed, disease and pest free from summer through to winter. As the weather cools down and you spend more time under the blanket than out on your deckchair you may ask yourself, "why am I still getting my lawn looked after?" Well here is why..... 1. The LCP is scheduled for 6 treatments each calendar year. These treatments are spread out slightly more during winter and occur more often during spring and summer. We know what your lawn needs and when it needs it. 2. Autumn and winter treatments are packed with pre-emergent herbicides which helps to reduce outbreaks of pesky weeds like bindii. 3. Damp, colder conditions are the perfect environment for fungal diseases to thrive. To avoid dollar spot and moss taking over your lawn, regular treatments are advised but outbreaks can also be treated on the spot. 4. The LCP comes with a warranty, which means if you have all 6 treatments during a calendar year and something in your lawn doesn't look quite right or you're not 100% satisfied then your local Coochie technician will come and spray free-of-charge. Preparation For Winter Keeping your lawn healthy throughout winter starts with good preparation in autumn and there's no better way to prepare than with Coochie HydroGreen. In many other countries, winter is when lawn care takes a break, for Australian’s this is not the
case. Australian lawn owners truly have their work cut out for them during this season. Due to the comparably warm temperatures year-round, with the majority of Australia experiencing a mild winter, lawn care is essential year-round. It may be tempting to stop lawn care due to the slowed growth and lack lustre look of your lawn, but if you put in the hard work this winter you can have your lawn looking lush and green ready for next Spring. Follow these 6 tips to have your lawn looking the best it can right through until Spring! 1. Get on top of weeds Weeds take advantage of the low growth rate of your grass during winter and overrun your lawn. Winter weeds germinate at lower soil temperatures and weeds such as Bindi and broad-leafed weeds can be relatively easily controlled with the help of some pre-emergent herbicides. 2. Mow higher During winter set your mower blade to be around 3-4 cm, and never cut lower than 2.5cm. repeated scalping will weaken your lawn and make it more vulnerable to diseases and weeds. Your grass will also be growing at a slower pace, so now is the time to be more relaxed with your mowing regime, and only mow when the turf needs it. Depending on the type of lawn you have you may only need to mow once a month! 3. Be wary of frost It's important to try to keep off your lawn whilst it's covered in frost as walking on the frozen grass blades can cause them to snap and the lawn becomes damaged. Frost occurs when low
temperatures cause morning dew to freeze, this, in turn, can lead to leaf discolouration, stunted growth and sometimes the leaf to snap or break. 4. Aerate Soils often compact during the winter so it is important to aerate as the soil warms up. Compacted soil is more susceptible to diseases, weeds and brown patches due to the lack of nutrients that are able to penetrate the soil. 5. Fertilise Your lawn can and should be fertilised during winter to ensure it has all the appropriate nutrients to keep it green and healthy throughout the colder months. This being said, a different type of fertiliser should be used at this time of year, winter fertilisers typically contain higher levels of iron which will strengthen your lawn and keep the leaves healthy and happy. 6. Less water Overwatering in winter can leave your lawn vulnerable to fungi and diseases. Only water when the lawn is visibly dry, and only water in the early morning until the frost is removed from the leaf. Having too much water in your soil can also lead to compaction, meaning you may need to aerate more frequently. Jack says “At the end of the day winter lawn care isn’t any harder than any other seasons, small adjustments just need to be made to cater for the changing conditions”.

LETS TALK DRAINAGE THIS WEEK LET’S TALK DRAINAGE AND SOME SIMPLE STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO AVOID THOSE UNWANTED BLOCKAGES AND MESSY DAMAGING FLOODS.
There are two types of Drainage Systems commonly found in our area: 1: STORM WATER 2: SEWAGE
STORMWATER PIPES Storm Water goes from your roof, yard or nearby ground. Storm water lines take rainwater from your house to the street gutter in most cases. This helps to keep excess water away from the footings of your house, and helps prevent White Ant infestation, movements in your footings that can cause cracking and damage to your houses structure, and also to keep water away from Pool and BBQ Areas. You should do an annual check on your storm water pipes to make sure they are clear to the street. You can do this by getting your hos3e and hosing your roof, and after a while you should see water flowing out into your gutter. If you don’t see this, you may have a blockage. In a newer house you may find that your roof water goes in to a rainwater tank/s – in this case put your hose in the overflow line of this tank and check that water flows to the street.
Alternatively, you may wish to wait until there is a heavy downpour and safely go outside to check that the pipes into the street gutters are flowing at a good pace. Here are a few tips to help maintain healthy Storm Water lines:
SEWAGE PIPES:
The last things anyone wants is raw sewage flowing into their home or yard. We are lucky to have great infrastructure sewage systems that prevent your home from flooding in the vent of a Mains Blockage. If the system has been installed to code then the likelihood of in house flooding is minor. You probably would have seen the steel or plastic grate that will be outside your kitchen, laundry or bathroom – This is an Overflow Relief Gully or ORG. In the event that there is a blockage in the mains sewer, this grate is lower than the house floor level , thus
Fully COVID Compliant
preventing the internal house from flooding. These ORG’s cannot be above the floor height of the house – if it is, then the likelihood of internal flooding in the event of a Mains blockage is high. The other problem that we find is people covering this ORG with pavers, concrete or even a big pot plant so you cannot see the grate. Any and all of these will block this ORG and in the event of a mains blockage your house will flood. Some of the most common blockages we see in Sewage pipes are as follows: 1. Tree Roots 2. Cooking Oils/Fat/Grease 3. Hair 4. Cage rim block toilet deodorisers that clip onto the side of a toilet bowl under the seat.
SIMPLE SOLUTIONS TO THESE ARE:
1. Know where your sewer line runs, to avoid planting trees over it 2. Wipe dishes/cooking items down with paper towel to absorb the majority of fats
before rinsing or washing them, and DO NOT pour left over pan juices down the sink. 3. Every 12 months or so put an approved drain cleaning formula down your kitchen sink. 4. Hair – if any one in the household has long hair, put some sort of mesh strainer in the shower/bath that you can clean out – this may take a bit of effort, but hair is very hard to remove from a drain once it has caused a problem. 5. Cage rim deodorisers – Use an alternative such as bowl dots. These cages cause most toilet blockages that we see. Better to just not use them. I hope that these hints will help you and may prevent what can be expensive and messy repairs. Remember if you need further information, or need your sewer mapped or a blockage cleared, please don’t hesitate to call us on 0482 799 571 to make a booking. It’s official, the Sunshine Coast has a brand-new coastal crossing – and another island! After mapping dramatic changes to the northern part of Bribie Island, the State Government has gazetted the impressive breach that has become a dominant feature opposite Golden Beach. This means the new entrance will now be known as the Bribie Island Bar and included in updated charts used by SouthEast Queensland mariners. The revised charts also will show two islands in the area: Bribie Island (North) and Bribie Island (South).

SAFETY DAVE SAYS FOR THIS COMING HOLIDAY PERIOD CHECK YOUR LIFE JACKETS: • do you have the appropriate life jacket for the whole trip? • are the life jackets suited to the activity being undertaken? • do you have one jacket for everyone on board? • are the jackets in good condition and correctly labelled? • if boating at night, do the jackets have reflective tape on them? and • do you have an appropriate sticker/label showing where the life jackets are stored? Many boaters have their jackets still in their original packaging – this leads to lack of effective inspection and the deterioration of the straps. This in turn also makes it difficult to fit in an emergency. The bottom line – life jackets should not be stowed and forgotten. They are difficult for a novice to put on in an emergency, and then it’s too late to realise they are inappropriate for the intended person in that emergency. Skippers should inspect each before each trip, show all passengers how to wear and have them easily accessible for use, preferably worn. “PLEASE WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKETS!” “BUT importantly – Always remember if you are heading out on the water LOG ON with your local VMR or Coast Guard, its a free service for everyone, so why wouldn't you! - It just may save your life!"

BEST ALTERATIONS TO MAKE IN YOUR CAR By Himanshu Singh
ON THE ROAD 1. START WITH TIRES
have iridium or platinum tips are likely to last longer and are less likely to fail. They also improve the gas mileage and power. Instead of opting for cheap paper air filters, upgrade to a reusable, washable, and cottonbased air filter to improve the airflow to the engine. Air filters open up paths to let ambient and cooler air into the engine thus, prolonging its life. Better still, if you have the budget, you can upgrade to a performance air intake system. You can get anyone to replace the air filter, which can be done in 5 minutes. However, for spark plugs, it’s best to seek help from a professional who has the proper tools to avoid any complications that might occur.
2. CHANGE THE BRAKING SYSTEM
4. DON’T FORGET THE EXHAUST SYSTEM
Changing the tires is one of the most incredible ways to elevate your car to the next level. It’s one of the easiest ways to give a vehicle a new look; without much effort. A better tire set would maximize the performance of your car. Replace those stock tires with performance tyres. You can change the look of the car by replacing the hubcaps. However, if you want to go the extra mile, use rim protectors to protect your rim alloys. You can get customized wheels at a dealership of your choice. Go for one that suits the appearance of your cars. A change of tires can also give you a more fulfilling experience on the road. Transitioning towards a quality brake setup could improve your car performance. It’s one element that ensures your safety and those of other people. A good setup of brake pads reduces the stopping distance of a vehicle. Also, they eliminate the braking situations that you are likely to encounter daily. A brake pad replacement is one of the easiest ways to elevate the vehicle’s performance.
3. TUNE-UP SPARK PLUGS AND AIR FILTERS FOR BETTER ENGINE PERFORMANCE
Traditional engine tune-up is surpassed by time, thanks to modern technology. Nonetheless, you have to replace some wear and tear parts of an engine to boost its performance. Examples include air filters and spark- plugs. The best part of owning these parts is they are affordable and would take your car to the next level. Spark plugs that

Exhaust systems are one of those modifications you might ignore, but they make a massive difference in your car. Exhaust systems are split into two categories which are ‘fully realized systems’ and bolt-on. When you upgrade the air filter system, it’s also essential to upgrade the exhaust system. Your vehicle would get sound enhancement from the new exhaust system. It also changes how the engine of the vehicle runs.
WRAPPING UP You can make some of these alterations yourself or look for professional help. If you are seeking help, ensure it’s from a place you trust. Also, regardless of the car alteration you make, it’s vital to ensure they match the model of your vehicle. You have to make considerations depending on your budget and also style.

YOUR HOME SECURITY...
There are often typical circumstances which occur to a home being burgled. A burglar will usually act on easy or tempting opportunities, especially when it is evident no one is home or the risk of being caught is low.
REDUCE THE RISK OF BREAK IN......
Homes with windows or doors left open or unsecured are more likely to attract a potential burglar. Similarly, curtains closed during the day and mail left to accumulate will indicate you are not home and increase your risk of an opportunistic break in. Thieves are often looking for cash or credit cards, small valuable items and electronic items which can be quickly sold for cash. Thieves also target car keys which are left in sight. Always ensure your car and house keys are secured and stored out of sight, and in the event, they are stolen, have your locks replaced or have keyless security reprogrammed immediately as thieves can return after their break in.
visibility to your home. 8. Consider installing perimeter security lighting including sensor lights. 9. Check around your home and see if you are security minded.......

WHAT YOU CAN DO...........
1. Ensure external doors are locked with a key even when you are at home. 2. Install a door viewer that allows you to see the person before you open the door. 3. Fit secure locks to your windows which meet Australian Standards and never leave the keys with the window locks. 4. Ensure security grills and shutters are properly installed and allow an exit in case of emergency. 5. Consider fitting security doors, security cameras and alarm systems to cover all external doors, windows, garage and sheds. 6. Lock all items such as bikes, lawn mowers, garden implements and tools, ladders and mobile BBQs. 7. Ensure trees and shrubs are trimmed to allow good 70
