NIPPERS LED THE WAY

APR/MAY 2018 - ISSUE 16

By Neil Wilson

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are well and truly over and all the athletes, supporters and volunteers are getting on with the next stage of their life, whatever that may be, and for many, especially those who played a role in the event, their time at the games has given them memories that they will cherish forever. There are eight Bribie Island Junior Surf Lifesaving Club Nippers who can be included in that group due to having been a part of the contingent of fifty-seven Nippers from as far away as Ayr in North Queensland who were tasked with leading the teams from each nation into the arena at

the opening ceremony. Liz Palmer, the Bribie Island club’s Publicity Officer explained that after Surf Lifesaving Queensland sent out a request for Nippers to apply for the role, Vic Fioran, the Bribie club’s Junior Activities Officer, suggested that the parents forward an application for their youngsters to be chosen. ‘I was probably the last of the Bribie parents to apply and that was in late January,’ Liz told me. ‘My three kids were chosen and I was surprised to find out later that they were actually short of the required number. Whilst we had eight who attended, some of the clubs, even the ones nearby

to the games, only had sent one or two,’ she said.

identified by the lightning bolt insignia on their caps.

Liz described how they had to make the trip to the Gold Coast every Thursday for about nine weeks to attend the training sessions and, in the final week before the opening ceremony, she made the decision to rent accommodation nearby. Liz said that this was to result in the other Bribie Nippers stayed there with her and her children and she regarded this as a win for all concerned. ‘It was great. My three had company and they all bonded over the time we were there,’ said Liz. ‘As well as being close to the practise sessions, we had free passes to the various theme parks and I took them there in our downtime,’ she added.

As the teams made their way out, it was Bailin Haji who ushered Australia into view, Abigail Van Haren showed the way for Bangladesh, Madeline Palmer brought out Trinidad and Tobago and Joshua Palmer was in front of Sierra Leone. The lightning bolt again came into the view when Blake Schmid led Singapore, Ngaire Harris was in front of Mauritius, Oliver Palmer brought Montserrat out and Zara Mould kept Dominica heading in the right direction. Bailin Haji was the one from Bribie who was chosen to bring out a second team which was Lesotho.

When the time for the opening ceremony arrived, it was announced that, as there were seventy-one countries and only fifty-seven Nippers, it would be necessary for some of the Nippers to return in order to lead out the second team. Liz told me that it was so good to find out that a Bribie Nipper would lead the Australian team into the arena. For the uneducated, (myself included) the Bribie Island Nippers could be

These young Bribie Islanders who played such an important role in what can best be described as a truly splendid ceremony must be congratulated for their efforts in front of the world stage. Bailin, Abigail, Madeline, Joshua and Blake, along with Ngaire, Oliver and Zara, you have done your country, your state and your island proud. If anyone would like to enquire about their children joining the Bribie Island Junior Surf lifesaving Club Nippers, they can call 3408 1188 for details.

TWO MONTHS AT CAMEROON

Mary Olive reading up on the work of the Africa Mercy When retired nurse Mary Olive left Bribie Island to begin a two-month visit to Douala in Cameroon recently, even though the time was to spent on board a 152-metre ship, she was not going for a holiday. The ship that Mary has gone to join is the Africa Mercy, a vessel that is They played through the night

so the work that is done on board the ship is absolutely essential,’ she added.

Mary also explained that the Africa Mercy will remain at the port of Douala until June when it will go for its yearly service.

Mary has volunteered her services and will be working as an admissions nurse and she told me that she will be a part of a team consisting of three nurses and two doctors. The Africa Mercy features the same facilities as a medium sized hospital with five operating theatres, an intensive care unit, an ophthalmic unit and a recovery unit. There are beds for eighty-two

For the convenience of the 450 volunteers who are responsible for all aspects of the ship’s operation, the Africa Mercy has a small supermarket, a library, a laundrette and a restaurant. Also on board is a school for all ages through to the final year of high school, a daycare centre and a gymnasium.

‘I really don’t know what to expect when I get there and I am going with no preconceived expectations,’ Mary said. ‘This is something that I have wanted to do for quite a while and I am looking forward to being able to help with this service. In Cameroon, the population is over twenty-three million and there are only eightythree trained surgeons along with twenty anaesthetists

The willingness of Mary Olive to dedicate two months of her time in order to be of help to others is just one more example of the wonderful spirit of those who are a part of the Bribie Island community.

The Africa Mercy will be Mary Olive’s home for the next two months

THE TIDE SHIFTS INTO THE GALLERY By Neil Wilson Whilst it is only fair to comment that art depicting the foreshore and waterways can very often be found on display at the various venues throughout the area, one also must admit that the “Shifting Tides” exhibition currently on display at the Mathew Flinders Gallery in the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre seems to provide a rather fresh and varied perspective to this popular theme.

The exhibition features the combined works of Aaron Hill, Frances Egan, Glenda Chaplyn and Kieran Robinson along with those of Bronwyn Doherty who has organised the event. ‘When I organised this show, I Asked a few friends to join me as we share a passion for the coast in all its guises,’ Bronwyn explained. ‘Together, we hope to share with our audience some of the joy and fascination that we experienced when

creating these works,’ she said. The individual styles of the five artists responsible for this exhibition are very evident and Bronwyn took the time to describe the strengths of each artist. ‘Aaron’s works on paper are abstract mappings of the ephemeral forces that form our coastline whilst Frances Egan’s whimsical works on

Glenda Chaplyn

paper are small snapshots of her life which take a metaphorical approach to the theme,’ said Bronwyn. ‘Glenda has explored the coastline as a journey of place and history through her use of lyrical line and Kieran has a selection of paintings with a naïve approach to the shoreline that are bold in colour and texture. Bronwyn Doherty contrast, my own work is soft of texture and in essence is a study of the silence of the backwaters,’ she added. The “Shifting Tides” exhibition will be on display until April 28th in the Mathew Flinders Gallery and is an exhibition that should not be missed. Following closely and commencing on May 1st will be an exhibition entitled “Scratching the Surface” which combines the works of four artists from the

Contemporary Art Practices Group and will run until May 13th. The Mathew Flinders Gallery can be found within the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre which is on Sunderland Drive at Banksia Beach and is open each dat except Monday from 10 am. LOSING HIS HAIR AT THE RSL By Neil Wilson In late May, Bellara resident Doug Philp will undergo surgery that requires him to be completely free of any hair on his head and, as one does when told about something such as this, I asked him what the operation was for and his reply was, ‘They are going to see if I have a brain.’ Now I’m sure that this is not the reason but there is one thing for sure, no matter what they find in Doug’s head, no one can dispute the fact that he has a very big heart. In times gone by, Doug has been the manager of an organisation which was involved in supporting those in need is therefore aware of the growing number of people in every community who find themselves without a home and need help. With this in mind, Doug has made the decision to use the necessity of having to lose his hair and beard as a

fundraising event to help with the support of the homeless within our local community. ‘People become homeless for many reasons that include domestic violence, bank foreclosure and of course, unemployment,’ said Doug. ‘With the issue of domestic violence, statistics have shown that in as much as ninety percent of cases, it is verbal abuse that is the main factor,’ he added. Having been a resident of our island for almost eighteen months, Doug is aware of the support that is desperately needed for our homeless sector and knows that the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre plays a very integral role in providing that support. He has therefore decided that whatever funds are raised at his cut and shave event which is to be held at the Bribie RSL on 5th May at 1 pm in the Sports Bar will be donated to the centre.

Doug Philp will look different without that hair Doug also knows that, despite there being some organisations that participate in fundraising and claim some of the monies raised as expenses, Rotary is a charity which ensures that all the funds go to the intended recipient so he has enlisted the help of the Rotary Club of Bribie Island to make sure that his fundraiser is successful. There are several ways that donations can be made including to the Rotary

Club of Bribie Island bank account which is at Bank of Queensland, BSB 124390, account 20314486 or the Go Fund Me page that is https://www.gofindme.com/ doug039s-donate-to-thehomeless. Also, collection tins are located at various businesses on the island and of course, donations will be welcomed on the day. Come along to the Bribie RSL at 1 pm on May 5th and support Doug in his efforts to help a very worthy cause.

in the Air

For our April “In The Air” feature, we take a look at the circumstances that led to well known Bribie Island Tai Chi instructor Pam Farrar deciding to buy that almost as well known yellow Tiger Moth that can regularly be seen in the skies above the island and which Pam has christened, “The Barefoot Contessa.” Pam and her late husband Frank came to Australia in February 1967 after they had both been employed by British Airways, Frank as a pilot and Pam as a stewardess. Pam, who was actually born in Bavaria to an English mother and a German father with some Jewish heritage, told me some interesting facts about her childhood. ‘I was christened Maria, my father was Count Leo von Meuter and my parents knew people such as Adolf Hitler and Herman

with PAM FARRAR and THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA (From Tai Chi to a Tiger Moth) By Neil Wilson

Tai Chi instructor and Tiger Moth enthusiast, Pam Farrar holds her free classes at Banksia Beach Goering,’ Pam explained. ‘My mother Doris was friends with Adolf Hitler’s girlfriend Eva Braun and they would often play the piano together,’ she said. Pam told me that, due to the Jewish heritage in her father’s family, when World War II broke out, her mother wisely took her to England where, after having her name changed to Pamela, she was to spend the remainder of her childhood and many years of her adult life. When Pam and Frank landed in Australia, they settled in Cairns where they operated a motel until selling it to a member of the Ashton family (of Ashton’s Circus fame) and moving to Brisbane. The couple purchased a snack bar in the city and this was to be their last venture prior to retirement and their move to Woodford and then

The Barefoot Contessa is a familiar sight in our skies

to Bribie Island some thirty years ago. Prior to becoming a member of our community, Pam had attended the Tai Chi Academy of Australia where she had attained her qualifications as an instructor and has since become what I would describe as an icon of the island with her free waterfront Tai Chi classes each Tuesday and Saturday. My Tai Chi classes are always very well attended and I now have about one hundred students,’ said Pam. ‘As a matter of fact, it was because a student treated me to a joy flight in a Tiger Moth about ten years ago that I made the decision to purchase the Contessa. The owner of Aero Dynamic Flight Academy, Brian Carpenter, helped me to arrange the purchase of the aircraft from someone on the Sunshine Coast. She added. Pam said that although she did commence flying lessons, a heart condition prevented her from being allowed to hold a pilot’s licence so she decided to place her beloved Tiger Moth in the very capable hands of Nick Maylor, one of the instructors at the academy.

‘Nick, who Pam told me is a great pilot and instructor, recalled when he took Pam on her joy flight. ‘Pam was absolutely blown away by the experience and she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face,’ said Nick. ‘When I take her up in the Contessa, it doesn’t matter what I do, whether it is spins or loops, she just loves it,’ he said. When I asked Pam about how the little plane earned its name, she pointed out that, if she wanted to she was entitled to use the title Countess. ‘I never use the title but, when I bought the Tiger Moth, I combined the Italian word for countess with the fact that I drive barefoot,’ she told me. ‘From then on, the plane was christened, “The Barefoot Contessa,”’ Pam said. The ‘Barefoot Contessa” and pilot Nick Maylor can both be found at the Caboolture based Aero Dynamic Flight Academy and a phone call to 5428 1195 is all that you need to do if you would like to experience the joy of a flight in the Tiger Moth and, as Pam Farrar has done, fall in love with open cockpit aviation.

I WONDER WHAT THEY DO IN THERE By Neil Wilson

It is no secret that what happens in that most secret of organisations, The Masons, is actually a secret but what is not so unknown is their history through the centuries. Research by Masonic historians suggest that the movement originated somewhen around the fifteenth century. Documents known as the old charge which dates from the Regius Poem allude to the membership of a lodge of operative Masons relating a mythological history of

the craft, the duties of its grades and the manner in which oaths are taken by new members. The first evidence of ceremonial regalia is also from that period.

The oldest Masonic Lodge in the world is thought to be the Lodge of Edinburgh No 1 and the minutes from it show a continuity from an operative lodge in 1598 to a modern speculative lodge. Many efforts have been made to discover the true origins Masonry and Thomas De Quincey theorised in his

The same Masons a week later at the meeting work, ‘Rosicrucians and Freemasonry” that the movement was possibly an outgrowth of Rosicrucianism and this was also taken up by the German professor J.G. Buhle in 1803. As I have said, nobody other than the Masons really knows what goes on except that their meetings abound with rituals, secret rly UT! 00 signs and grips passwords, a e 0

and, as was discovered when a camera was allowed into the local lodge, they even have practices before a meeting. Entertainers of the Island

PETER ORR Wow, how quick do the months go by?. I have just realised that I have been featuring our locally based entertainers for over twelve months and I am beginning to form the opinion that, as well as the many younger talented artists that we have in the area, there is a myriad of musicians within the community who, as well as having been in the industry for a few decades, can claim to have played with some of the most wellknown artists in the country. Someone who certainly fits into that category is our April ‘Entertainer of the Island,” Peter Orr. Peter can best be described as a guitarist who adept with a diversity of styles and genres. He grew up in Sydney and began his musical career playing in bands such Cold Cash along with Johnny O’Connor, Jimmy Lyris and Reverend Ted Knox’s son, David. ‘When I was about eighteen, we used to play with a lot of the guys who were not famous yet,’ said Peter. ‘A lot of us came from around the Cronulla area, people from bands like Sherbet and others,’ he explained. Having started to be aware of who the bands of Peter’s early career were, it came as no surprise when he mentioned that in 1976, he joined with Ol’ 55 and The Skyhooks on their national tour. ‘They rang me one afternoon to say that I had to be at the airport straight away for a flight that departed at 4.30 pm and this presented one big problem,’ Peter told me. ‘I had left my guitar at a studio in town and so I rang them with a request for it to be sent to the airport in a taxi. When I got to the

By Neil Wilson

airport, there were about two hundred cabs there and I had no hope of working out which one had my guitar so I had to borrow a guitar from one of the other band members and all during the tour I worried about where mine would end up. After the tour, I had a great surprise when I found out that the taxi driver had returned it to the studio,’ he added.

As seems to be the case with quite a number of professional artists, Peter spent a number of years passing on his skills to others and he said that at one point, he began to ponder about whether he would still be playing Rock ‘N’ Roll when he was in his sixties. ‘This motivated me to attend the Conservatorium to increase my knowledge of other genres, especially Jazz,’ said Peter. ‘I thought I could play until I heard how good some of the people there were and I didn’t realise just how much I didn’t know. Peter commented that, before musicians such as Don Burrows came to that Conservatorium, jazz was off limits there. Another three years of Peter’s time as a teacher was spent at the Sacred Heart College in Adelaide where he was once again amazed by the talent of some of the other musicians, many of whom had a Master’s Degree in music. Peter has also travelled around, playing gigs in various places including North Queensland and he did point out that, whilst a musician works in his chosen field whenever possible, there are times when other employment has to be sought and one of these times resulted

in him being employed in an aircraft factory. ‘I was going around knocking on a few doors and I came to a building that carried a sign which read, “Aerospace, and I thought I may as well ask so I got to see the boss who said, ‘What do you do?” I told him that I normally play the guitar and he replied, ‘I play the guitar.” Well I ended up being employed as the storeman and was there for quite a while. It was the factory that produced the Thruster ultralight,’ explained Peter. ‘He was a good boss and because he knew that I played whenever I could, he didn’t mind if I needed time off,’ peter recalled. It only stands to reason that, when an artist is known to have the ability such as Peter Orr has, they get to play some very popular gigs at some very well known venues and also get to back some Nationally famous artists. Peter’s musical talent has been responsible for him performing at various venues that he refers to as hallowed ground, having been stages where bands including the Beatles have performed. He has backed a range of recording artists including Normie Rowe and others from that era.

Since moving to Queensland some thirty-six years ago, Peter has worked as a solo artist as well as with bands and he did point out that he always prefers to play as a member of a band. When “Locals Only” founder Alby Lincoln had the music shop at Woorim, Peter spent a while teaching budding musicians at the premises along with continuing to perform at various venues. ‘In my opinion, Peter Orr is arguably one of the best guitarists in South East Queensland,’ said Alby. ‘He is so good with so many different styles,’ he added. He moved to the local area about three years ago from the Sunshine Coast and has quite often teamed up with another well-known performer, Michael Early, adding the great sound of his guitar to Michael’s band, ‘The Doodads.” During the time that I spent talking to Peter about his life, his music and his preferred genres, he told me that over the years he has been called on to play everything from to rock to jazz, funk and country. He commented that at the moment, he has teamed up with another musi for a few country type gigs and he said that this involves what

thebribieislander he refers to as “Chick’n Pick’n” which is a very unique part of the country genre. Once he had said this, he produced from his collection of more than ten guitars (some of them Fenders), a guitar which he referred to as a B-Bender which he explained is the one that he uses for this style of country. When I asked Peter about who he would regard as having the main influence on his music, he listed artists such as Larry Carlton, The Doobie Brothers and Wishbone Ash as the main ones. Apparently, Peter is performing a few gigs with Michael Early at the reasonably new and very popular new eating establishment on First Avenue, “Sticky Fingers” so I would definitely recommend a visit to that venue for what I can promise would be an unmissable evening of great music.

RICHIE LANGFORD Singer, songwriter and foot stompin’ blues man, Richie Langford hails from Melbourne, and has been touring various parts of the country playing festivals, bars, cafes and pubs for several years. After a recent successful run of gigs in Europe and New Zealand and acclaimed performances at 2017 Blues on Broadbeach, he will be

embarking on his seventh east coast tour in April 2018.

It’s hard to believe that one man can produce so much sound……Richie employs hands, feet and mouth on assorted guitars, harmonicas, foot pedals and an old suitcase converted into a kick drum to deliver a well-honed repertoire of originals and blues standards with a rockin’ groove. This

year sees the release of Richie’s latest studio album, Bluestone Road. A fantastic solo outing, with cameo performances from his Blind Creek Blues Review’ bandmates and backing vocals by Australian music legend, Grace Knight, Bluestone Road is already getting radio play around Australia and receiving rave reviews. You can catch a show at Sticky Fingers Grill on Saturday 21st April 6pm.

TECHNOLOGY

Just How Amazing Is It? By Neil Wilson

I know that there are times when modern technology can be almost enough to turn anyone to hard liquor, especially when system failures result in a task taking twice as long as it did when it was done with more manual input, but let’s be completely honest, technological advances that

have been made throughout the years have certainly made life easier.

One of the most welcome changes that have been brought about by these advances in conjunction with increased knowledge is the increased ability to cure and/or prevent diseases. An example of this is that over the twenty years

following 1991, the mortality rate associated with cancer fell by twenty percent and in the same twenty year period, the percentage of children who died before their fifth birthday dropped by almost half. Between 1990 and 2013, the worldwide maternal mortality rate decreased by almost fifty percent. Also as a direct result of advances in medical science is the statistics relating to human life expectancy. In the last fifty years, human life expectancy increased more than it had in the previous 200,000 years of human existence. In 1950, the average life expectancy was forty-seven years and by 2011, that had increased to seventy years. One of the largest issues faced by the medical profession has been the battle to eradicate polio and an encouraging statistic is that between 1988 and 2001, reported cases of

APR/MAY 2018 - ISSUE 16 the disease dropped by an incredible ninety nine percent. This result is due to mass vaccination campaigns which have not only saved millions of lives but have also prevented many from suffering a disability. Scientists have also found that between 1971 and 2009, nuclear and renewable power has prevented 1.8 million deaths due to lower air pollution resulting from reduced usage of coal. When we consider that the above statistics are only a very small example of how much technology has improved society in general, it is easy to understand why there is constantly more and more funding spent on research in both the medical laboratories and industry.

meet the volunteers

By Neil Wilson

JULIA and JOHN WATSON By Neil Wilson

Since they retired, locals Julia and John Watson enjoy being able to spend time doing the things that they enjoy including taking their two dogs for a walk on the beach and going out for a meal. Something else that the couple are passionate about is volunteering and, as a way of helping within the local community, they spend their Wednesday mornings manning the reception area at the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre. Julia and John moved to this beautiful area after coming to Australia from England twenty five years ago. They had both been serving members of the Royal Air Force and on arriving here, John found employment with The Red Cross and later on with Angel Flight whilst Julia worked for the Blood Bank prior to taking up a position with the Caboolture Council until accepting a redundancy package when the mergers took place. Until commencing at the Neighbourhood Centre in September 2017, the pair devoted their efforts to the Bribie and District Wildlife Rescue, caring mainly for sick birds, with Julia taking on the position of Secretary and John becoming the organisation’s Training Officer. Both Julia and John are what I would refer to as “people persons” and as such are ideally suited to being the ones who become the first

point of contact for those who come to the centre for assistance. They are tasked with making sure that people are referred to the right service, either at the Neighbourhood Centre or at another agency. ‘It is a terrific feeling when, after someone comes here with a problem and are unsure about how to handle it, we see them leave feeling a lot happier,’ said John. ‘One person said to us, “This is the first time in ages that I have felt good and it’s so nice to know that someone cares.” I think we all had a bit of a tear in our eyes that morning,’ he added. As well as their role at the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre, this couple do have other individual pastimes and for Julia, it is cooking, now that she has the time, whilst John enjoys nurturing his Bonsai trees. They told me that as a way of keeping fit, they have set up a small gym at home but they have yet to take proper advantage of it. ‘The wallking machine is the dustiest thing in the house,’ Julia quipped. Julia and John Watson are two of the many wonderful volunteers who give of their time to ensure that the Neighbourhood Centre is

kept operating and Centre Manager Cecelia Taylor told me that they would love to have more volunteers who can spare a few hours each week to help out. ‘We need new volunteers who are caring and nonjudgemental and are able to maintain confidentiality to work with people who attend our service,’ Cecelia explained. ‘Communication skills along with a great telephone manner are really appreciated and I would ask that if there is anyone who would like to make a positive difference in their community by joining our team, they contact us either by calling in at 9 Verdoni Street at Bellara or by phone on 3408 8440,’ she said. The many services that are available at the centre include Professional Debt Relief, Counselling which can help people to work out how they can deal with the challenges they are facing, free Computer Tuition for seniors, a service that teaches people to use the various options associated with the internet and also Emergency Relief along with free Legal Advice. Each Tuesday morning from 9.30am, the Neighbourhood Centre provides Fresh Food for people in need through

the Neighbourhood Harvest program and the centre also has a Bargain Boutique which offers a great variety of good quality pre-loved items at low prices. There are a number of free courses and other groups that operate at the centre and this includes the MultiCultural English Conversation Group which is held from 9 am to 12 noon each Monday. The Understanding Addictions Course begins on April 23rd at 5pm. This is a three week introductory course which is suitable for anyone who is affected by addictions, either their own or the addictions of their loved ones. The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre provides help to so many within our community each week and the work of the volunteers is absolutely outstanding Anyone who would like more information about how to become a volunteer at the centre should make contact with them as soon as possible. They can be contacted by phone on 3408 8440 or by calling into the centre at 9 Verdoni Street at Bellara during opening hours which are Monday to Thursday form 9 am until 3 pm.

BOARD GA MES ARE AN ESCAPE (In More Ways Than One)

Out of all the board games that have been made, both in the past and in current times there are very few people in the world that can honestly say that they have never heard of, and more than likely played at some point, the somewhat old fashioned game, Monopoly.

Initially mass marketed in America in 1934, the game can be said to hold fond memories for many families who spent quality time of an evening attempting to send each other broke and most of us remember the tokens like the little dog, the horse, the hat and the shoe that were used to track each player’s movements around the board. Sadly, the manufacturers have recently that some of these iconic tokens are to be replaced with what they believe are symbols that more accurately represent modern times Included in the new pieces will be a cat, a helicopter, a guitar and a robot with a moustache.

Pet Tribalism

Care

Being profoundly social beings, dogs and their humans should come with some important disclaimers: Tribalism, Autonomy and Jealousy. Tribalism is the “us and them” mentality and can lead to conflict between packs or Villages. In profoundly social beings, the potential for this to occur is backed by history’s numerous battles, usually between neighbours. It springs from the group

identity of each Village (a type of ego on a group level) justifying an attack. It is fed by excluding other Villages e.g. “others are not like us”, or through belittling another Village. One healthy way to outlet tribal tendencies is to watch or participate in sport, especially group sport. For example, in supporting your choice of team during the state of origin football series.

like to know with this, the Crown was always looking for ways to help them. One of the most useful items for an escaping POW to have was of course an accurate map which not only provided information on their location but also marked the position of “safe houses” where an escapee could find assistance. Other useful items included currency from various countries, a compass and a two part metal file. A very difficult factor to overcome in the successful supply of all this was not only the difficulty associated with smuggling the items in but the problem of both paper maps and banknotes getting wet and unusable so someone at MI-5 came

up with the idea of printing the maps on silk which is durable, can be scrunched up into very tiny wads, and can be unfolded as many times as needed without any noise being made. Only one manufacturer in Britain had the necessary technology to print on silk and that was John Waddington Ltd who, as luck would have it, was also the U.K. Licensee for the board game Monopoly. As a part of the conditions allowed for prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention, Games and pastimes were permitted to be included in the “Care” packages which were regularly sent by The Red Cross to those who were interned and of course, among the games was

Monopoly. The Waddington company was only too keen to be of help and, under the strictest of secrecy, in a guarded compound within the company’s premises, a specialected group of employees began to manufacture the necessary maps which, along with the other useful items, were then included in a number of the Monopoly sets and these were marked with a tiny red dot in the corner of the “Free Parking “ square. All of them were consequently sworn to secrecy indefinitely in case the British Government might have to use the same strategy in a future war As we approach the one hundredth anniversary of the World War one ceasefire, we, as proud Australians, should take the time to remember not only those who paid the supreme sacrifice for their country but those who suffered as prisoners of our enemies. UNDERSTANDING THE LOGIC

By Neil Wilson

The age-old adage, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” appears to ring true when examining a situation that has members of a local service scratching their heads.

An ongoing upgrade to our public transport facilities that includes the replacement of the local bus stop shelters have Lions Club of Bribie Island members a little perplexed considering that many of the current shelters have been erected by the Lions Club to the required standard and are constantly inspected and maintained in an appropriate manner. Lions Publicity Officer Gordon West told me that prior to the replacement program, there were thirtyfour shelters that had been erected by the club. ‘I think

that there is only about twenty left now and we are about to lose another thirteen, said Gordon. ‘The shelters were erected by volunteer workers from the club and the cost of the materials, ($850 each in 1999 currency), was met by the club. The Lions Club began erecting the shelters not that long after they were formed forty-seven years ago and we have relied heavily on the money raised from the advertising space to fund some of our community projects,’ he explained. Lions Club of Bribie Island President Cheryl Williams pointed out that it is not only the club that will be adversely affected. ‘Besides the obvious loss of a source of funding for the club, local businesses

Lions Club members Hans Werner (L), Cheryl Williams and Gordon West are concerned about losing their bus shelters like the one pictured here situation,’ she told me.

will be deprived of a cheap way to advertise,’ said Cheryl. ‘Unless we can get something done to ensure the continuation of the advertising and the funding that it produces, there are no winners. It’s a lose, lose situation,’ she added. This matter has now been brought to the attention of Division One Councillor, Brooke Savige and she has since had discussions with the various council department heads. ‘Once I was made aware of the concerns of the Lions Club members, I have talked to the appropriate people in an effort to resolve the situation,’ said Councillor Savige. ‘It is my intention to ensure that the matter is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties concerned and it appears that there will be a good outcome to this

Councillor Savige explained that the replacement of the shelters is part of an upgrade that is required by the Federal Government and it has to be carried out within a certain time frame. ‘Along with the shelter replacements, we are remodelling the bus stops to be disability friendly,’ said the Councillor. ‘We want to ensure that everyone in the community has proper access to public transport,’ she added. The Lions Club of Bribie Island are instrumental in supporting many worthy community causes and new members are always welcome. For more information about the club, you can make a call to Gordon West on 0403 018 727.

Bribie Simply Healthy

By Heenam Kim

Vitamin C Shower.

This NEW product has just arrived at Bribie Simply Healthy. The Sonaki Vitamin C Shower Filter removes 99.9% of chemical residues and impurities in tap water. This product is good for those people who suffer from dry, itchy and allergic skin conditions and prevent anti-aging and eczema. The Sonaki Vitamin C Shower Filter would be especially beneficial for asthmatics and people with respiratory problems. Our tap water is treated with harsh chemicals such as chlorine, chloramines and more to kill bacteria and small organisms. A long-term exposure to chlorinated water has a harmful effect on our health. When chlorine and chloramines penetrate our

blood system, calcification will occur in our bones causing stiffness of joints and bones, it will also go into the Pineal gland. The Pineal gland releases serotonin and melatonin and is responsible for how you think and feel. Serotonin is known as a happy chemical that controls our mood, appetite and memory. Melatonin regulates our sleep

pattern and when we don’t get the required levels of melatonin, our sleep pattern will be disturbed. Chlorine and chloramines also aggravate and increase hair loss and fine lines. Many of us try our best to avoid harmful chemical intake, using high quality water filtering systems. However, we have to realise that our skin is the largest organ with over 3 trillion pores breathing in and out. Each time we take a shower, we are also absorbing chemicals through respiration, which goes directly into our bloodstream; it only takes a faction of time for our skin to absorb chemicals, like a sponge. The average person absorbs more chlorine into their body during a shower than they would drinking 8 glass of pool water a day. Also, when we wash organic fruits and vegetables under tap water they will also soak harmful chemicals, which defeats the purpose of eating organic food. Not too long ago, I installed the Vitamin C Shower and soon felt the results. Usually after a shower your skin feels quite squeaky clean and I never objected until after I began using The Vitamin C Shower filter and noticed my skin began to feel, much softer. We need our natural body oil to protect the skin by strengthening and maintaining its lipid barrier; this lipid barrier accelerates the skin’s natural healing and repairing process. Sonaki Vitamin C shower filters are affordable, they contain 100% pure Vitamin C with no added artificial colours or scents. You can even use Vitamin C filtered water direct to fish tanks with no need to treat water with any other chemicals and fish will not die. Vitamin C is proven to be the most superior filter media - 100% organic and softens water by reducing hard minerals and heavy metals. This shower system generates negative ions and promotes nature’s powerful antioxidants. Vitamin C shower will prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles. A PLACE TO FIND TREASURE By Neil Wilson

The catchphrase “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure” is probably a reasonably accurate way to sum up the reason for recycling and going bargain hunting and, with this in mind, the right place to pick up a bargain on May 19th at the Uniting Church’s annual Trash and Treasure Trove. This is an event that has proved popular with locals in the past and is one of the two major fundraisers that is held by the church each year. It will, as usual, offer a great variety of goods from a real mix of stallholders. Trash and Treasure Trove Co-ordinator Lynne Mellers told me that the response from stallholders has been excellent. ‘There will be over thirty stalls on the day and the items available will include craft, plants and cakes as well as what will

I have tried to arrange attendance by as many community groups as

possible and this includes other churches, the Girl Guides and the RSL Fishing Club,’ she added. The Trash and Treasure Trove will run from 8 am until noon and, due to the dedicated effort by Lynne to

MORETON BAY PLEDGES TO GO TO PLASTIC STRAW-FREE straws from council’s venues, like the Queensland State Equestrian Centre, and from local council-run programs.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has today pledged to phase out the use of single-use plastic straws at its council-operated venues and events. In what is believed to be a first for South-East Queensland councils, Moreton Bay councillors adopted a motion at their Coordination Committee Meeting on Tuesday, April 17, to remove single-use plastic

Economic Development and Tourism Spokesperson Councillor Peter Flannery spearheaded the motion and said he was inspired by Queenslander Molly Steer and her Straw No More project. “It’s a simple measure, which will hopefully make a huge difference on the overall amount of single-use, non-biodegradable plastic straws being ending up in landfill or being littered in our waterways,” Cr Flannery said. “It might not seem like much

when you use a plastic straw to drink, but multiply that by the thousands of people who visit our venues every year, and you can start to see the scale. Moreton Bay joins Cairns Regional Council in being among the first councils in Queensland to vote to remove single-use straws from its venues and events. “Other areas across the country, including Cairns, are taking up the pledge to phase out single-use plastic straws, and we don’t want Moreton Bay to lag behind everyone else. “Our own name is a nod to one of the country’s most

important coastal resources: Moreton Bay, and with simple measures like this, we can ensure that it thrives for generations to come. Single-use plastic straws can have a devastating impact on waterways, with marine animals easily being able to choke on the small pieces of plastic. Cr Flannery hoped the move would also inspire local businesses to follow suit. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism will review the use of single-use plastic straws at its events and functions too. “Already a number of businesses and cafes in Moreton Bay are taking up the push for greater sustainability through re-usable cups and biodegradable cutlery, and I hope this move encourages them to also ditch the singleuse plastic straw from their menus.”

ON THE ROAD TO DARWIN f o r T he Can c er C o u ncil

most atrocious roads,’ Vaughan commented. ‘It will be a six night and seven day event and, judging from the previous years, it will receive great media coverage,’ He said.

The 1990 Falcon van that Vaughan bought for $200 By Neil Wilson In just a few weeks time, local resident, Vaughan Girouard and his mum Carla will make the drive to Darwin in a Falcon van that he has bought for the bargain basement price of only $200. Vaughan (34) and Carla (62) have decided to make the journey as one of the 250 teams that will compete in the Cancer Council’s “Shitbox Rally,” an event which is regarded as the largest fundraiser for the council on a national basis.

Vaughan explained to me that the rules of the rally require competitors to be driving a vehicle that was bought for less than $1,000 and is not a four-wheel drive. ‘As the event is all about raising both funds and awareness of the fight against cancer, fundraising is our main priority at the moment. Entrants have to have raised at least $4,000 before the event gets underway,’ said Vaughan. ‘We are now seeking both last-minute sponsors as well as donations and anyone

who becomes a sponsor will not only have their business advertised on the van, they will also be given a link to their business on the “Shitbox Rally” website,’ he told me. The 1990 Falcon van that Vaughan and his mother will drive in the rally has before endured the conditions that are commonplace in a rally and Vaughan pointed out that when he bought the vehicle, it was following the completion of the 2015 rally in which the old vehicle had competed as “Team Surf and Turf.” We are competing as “Team Gold Fever” and the journey will take us on some of the country’s

Details about becoming a sponsor can be obtained by giving Vaughan a call on 0450 264297 and Vaughan said that there are a range of sponsorship deals available and the prices start at $100. Anyone who would like to make a donation should log on to the website which is https:// donate18.shitboxrally.com. au/gold-fever or they can also donate goods which are able to be raffled. Team Gold Fever are dedicating their time to help the Cancer Council in their constant efforts to make a difference, through both research and education and, as there would not be too many of us who have not been touched by the effects of cancer at some time, either to parents, partners, close friends or ourselves. With this in mind, it is important for all in the Bribie Island community to show their support for Vaughan and Carla as they give freely of their time to help make a difference.

A BLUE MONTH By Neil Wilson

Researchers estimate that autism affects over twenty-five million people throughout the world and in developed countries, 1.5% of children had been diagnosed with ASD as of 2017, this figure more than doubling since the year 2000. It is known to occur four or five times more often in boys than in girls and whilst the number of people diagnosed has increased dramatically since 1960, it is thought that this could

be attributed to changes in diagnostic practices.

Autism is a developmental disorder which is can result in troubles with communication and social interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviour and the signs can become apparent in the first few years of a child’s life and often develop gradually although some children with autism will reach their developmental milestones at a normal pace and then worsen. The disorder affects the information in the brain by altering how nerve cells connect and organise although exactly how this occurs is not yet completely understood. It is included within the autism spectrum along with the less severe Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified. Although there is no known cure, early speech or behaviour intervention can often help children with autism gain social and communication skills and not many children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood, there have been cases in which children have recovered from the condition. Over time, an autism culture has developed with some people seeking a cure and others believing that autism should be accepted as a difference and not treated as a disorder. Queensland’s “Go Blue for Autism” campaign, which continues until month’s end, is when supporters are asked to help raise awareness and funds as a way of assisting them to provide support for people and their families who are living with ASD. This can be achieved in a number of ways which include holding an event, attending one that is being held within their local community or making a purchase from the great range of merchandise that is available from their online shop. All funds that are raised through the “Go Blue for Autism” campaign in 2018 will be used to

help Autism Queensland to provide education, therapy and support services for children and adults who are living with autism. No-one knew of the pain That was deep within her heart Her unheard cries for comfort As her heart was torn apart. They didn’t know the love That was hidden deep within She had become so transparent With this very special man. Even if you’re certain you’re included in the will, it’s rude to take your ute and trailer to the funeral. Eating Out: 1. ‘THAT’S NOT THE RIGHT NAME’ (SORRY BETTY) By Neil Wilson I got in trouble last week and, as if that in itself isn’t bad enough, when you get told off by a Scottish woman, the rather strong accent seems to make you feel as if you’re in twice as much trouble as you really are. Seriously though, following an article that I wrote about the great voices of the members of The Golden Entertainers Association, I had a call from Publicity Officer Betty McEwan informing me that I had got the name of their regular meeting venue wrong. Betty explained that the correct name of the place that was once called The Golden Age Centre is now The Activity Centre, not The Respite Centre as I had called it. Apparently there is

AN AUTUMN AFFAIR By Neil Wilson I don’t think that there are too many more enjoyable ways to spend an Autumn Sunday evening than listening to beautiful music played by a group of very accomplished musicians and, on Sunday, April 29th, music lovers will once again have that opportunity when the members of the Bribie Island Orchestra present their Autumn concert in the Bribie Island Retirement Village hall at Foley Street. The concert will commence at 6.30pm and as always, the evening will feature music by a variety of composers including Handel, Hadyn and Heykens. Concert goers will also be treated to a selection of tunes by The

Amber Trio, three talented ladies whose performances are consistently well received wherever they perform. Members of this trio are Pam Bowyer (cello), Pam Handley (violin) and Beryl Meyers (piano) Concerts by the Bribie Island Orchestra are always a much anticipated event on the calendar and as such are very well attended. Orchestra Publicity Coordinator Heather White explained that bookings for the concert are essential and anyone who would like to attend should call 5497 5818 to confirm their ticket. ‘This will be a great evening with beautiful music and we even provide a really good supper after the concert,’ Heather told me.

T H E LO N G WAY ROUND TO B R I B I E ! and myself, going on a 15 month trip of misadventure in a “big rig” around Australia, on a mission to find the place to call home. After a couple of nights of outback experience at Clairview we were on our way to Horseshoe Bay nestled on the outskirts of Bowen.

BOWEN Episode 5

By Sabine Von Graz Hi there, here is just a quick rehash in case you have missed the first episodes from ‘The Bribie Islander’. My short stories are all about our family, Richard my hubby, Ginger our daughter

This was actually our third visit at this particular caravan park, which is one of our favourite parks when heading North. It’s an older caravan park with even older amenity blocks, one of which did not have any lights anymore and I never saw them being used or cleaned. This however

APR/MAY 2018 - ISSUE 16 owner/farmer who also owned a huge tomato and mango farm.

does not keep us or the Grey Nomads away in the Winter months, when it is completely booked out and packed to the rafters. Although this time around the park felt eerily empty, as we arrived out of season in November, it was to our advantage and we scored a great shady spot with the most amazing water views. We also had the warm pool to ourselves , which we sought out at least two times a day to escape the heat, and due to the lack of other guests we had the full attention of the charming

As soon as I thanked him for the free tomatoes, we got a pawpaw, telling him how yummy the pawpaw was, we ended up with two large bunches of bananas, mentioning to him the great lemon aftertaste of the bananas…he rewarded us with some watermelon. Still don’t know the mystery man’s name with his blue twinkling eyes, however he offered to take us to his farm on our return trip. But the owner and the pool were not the only attractions at Horseshoe Bay. The huge boulder rocks with scenic walks and lookouts, three different swimming bays, a Chinese, Indian and Western cuisine restaurant all in strolling distance from the park. And not to mention the amazing sunsets over the water along the bike path leading to the Sunday

Horseshoe Bay market. However it’s hard to beat the markets of Bribie Island, with the variety of stalls, entertainment and gorgeous locations. Apart from Horseshoe Bay, the town of Bowen itself is quite unique with those wide, wide….very wide streets, like in the ‘wild west’ including the dryness and lack of people, who only come out when they have to, making it a perfect set for a cowboy movie, only the brown good looking muscly chests on top of horsebacks are missing…. No wonder this place was used in the movie ‘Australia’ starring Nicole Kidman. Nearly 10 years ago, we were heading North on our honeymoon on a Goldwing motorbike, just to discover that the whole of Bowen was booked out due to the making of that movie!!! Exhausted, tired and hungry I swore I would never set foot in this place again – I am glad I changed my mind though…

Boulder Rock

This time around however we were not on a motorbike, brought our 9 year old child and travelled in the comfort of the Dodge, the 5th wheeler and the old Ford station wagon, our support car. For every trip I would pack some snacks for the whole family and the wagon, more than occasionally, would end up in a messy state, which Richard turned a blind eye to.

Let’s Keep It Local ! | 41

Ginger is also part of this logo inspiration, where she is hugging the Mango sunset, standing on the rocks at Horseshoe Bay. She loooooves the story how the Mango got stolen… it was big news, heard all over the radio, even being on TV overseas! The huge 10 tonne, three – storey Bowen Mango was stolen and could not be found!!!!

Local Walkways Voila, a few days later it reappeared fully installed – so what happened ???? Turned out it was stolen as a publicity stunt by a restaurant chain, who was releasing their new Mango flavoured drink…… Something to keep in mind when promoting your next business idea? Leaving you with this inspiring thought I have

Not so however when it came to the Dodge Ram, which on longer drives was fed by Ginger’s lunch box and the shiny black exterior occasionally wearing smeared handwriting like ‘IT WASN’T ME DADDY’. All those mishaps, knocks and leftovers earned Ginger the nickname ‘Crumbs strikes again’ (by Daddy), and while working on her assignments for Brisbane Distance Education she occasionally would sign her work with…. ‘Crumbs strikes again’!

The Big Mango

Farmers Gifts Thinking off it…. you would need a huge crane and truck to steal it while making lots of noise dismantling it, not to mention all this next to a busy road. - so where did the big Mango go????

come to the end of this episode, but I do hope you can join me in the next edition of ‘The Bribie Islander’, when we head North to Forrest Beach on ‘The Long Way Round to Bribie’!

RANTS & RAVES Im contacting you to please help create social action by raising awarness that this needs to stop! Regards, Desiree, Bribie Island. Dear Editor, Hi. My name is Desiree and I am a local resident at Ningi Qld. On Saturday morning 6th of April my husband and I went out on the boat near Bongaree about 500 metres from the jetty is and sadly saw a dead turtle, this is not the first! Sadly watercrafthave been impacting and destroying wildlife, injuring the animals, sometimes left for dead which Ive attached picture. Ive reported to RSPCA and sadly this is not the first report this week! Another local resident reported a dead turtle on Wednesday 4th of April.

Dear Editor, Hospital suggestion for Bribie Island Sir sometime ago I suggested the possibility of a Medical Centre/Hospital for Bribie Island, and recently I read a suggestion regarding the same. I am not sure if it would be feasible for a Hospital, however I believe that what we could have built at the rear of the Main Shopping Centre on the island is a Medical Complex where most if not all new Doctors could have rooms and a small medical theatre

for simple non life threating surgical treatments, rather than spread as is all around the island. Plus an area to stabilise patients before transporting them off the island to various Hospitals. It is certainly worth discussing to see if it is viable. Regards Farley, Banksia beach Dear Editor, Another great issue with enlightening local news and articles of interest bringing our community to the forefront of living. Neil your skills are sensational and your role as a wordsmith carries us into your stories with interest and we leave with knowledge. Kind regards, Bill Bill Peacock OAM Dear Editor, Koala Safe Haven Bribie Island I have seen a couple of Koala signs on the island and after enquiring cannot find out if in fact we have any Koalas? I have suggested in the past that we get the gums that are sort after by Koalas planted in areas available, and begin a safe haven/refuge for Koalas, creating a habitat and possible tourist attraction. It would be good to hear from others their thoughts on this suggestion, and why the Wildlife service are not more proactive in regards to this and other native animals. Regards, Farley, Bribie Island Dear Editor, Bribie Islanders, especially the business people, frequently complain about the cost of

power. However, when I suggested a while back installing a community power system, I only met with one response and that was negative. There are tens of thousands of community power systems worldwide, and seventy within Australia. In Dalesford, Victoria two wind turbines supply enough power for 2,000 households. In Yackandandah (also in Victoria) shareholders contributed between $7 and $15 thousand each to join a system which their community owns. We live in the Sunshine State, in the sunniest country on Earth, so what is wrong with having a community power system on Bribie? Most systems are connected to the national grid, and with rooftop solar feeding into their mini-grid, contributors survive with battery backup, allowing others to use their excess, such as their local council.

It only requires one of the business people to get off their backside, and ask for contributions from the wealthy people who live here (the houses and boats betray their presence). A system which can pay dividends to its shareholders, and make contributions to the community, is something we should do before so many others take up the challenge that the result will be higher prices for those who don’t. If you go to www.cpagency. org.au you will find good information to get started. H.Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Editor, When I moved to Bribie Island many years ago, I quickly noticed that some individuals complain about anything and everything. Last Sunday morning I noticed that the two Jehovah’s Witness who stands next to the pathway in Pumicestone Lions Park were not there. I proceeded to the Sunday markets and after a

look around I made inquiries at the JW’s marquee. I was told that one person lodged a complaint with council about the billboard they have on the parkland. This billboard measures approx 600mm by 800mm and has free literature on it. When I was told this I looked towards the Library and within 50 meters I could see five advertising billboards on the footpath. Every weekend and school holidays from the Marine Rescue to the jetty there are multiple billboards advertising boat hire, paddle boards, electric scooters, segway, and kayak hire. All of these businesses are conducting a Commercial Enterprise in a public park, and many drive trucks onto the parkland as well as lining the side of the pathway with kayaks etc. Why would someone complain about the JW’s who are only there until 9 am when the others are there all day? Regards, Eric Adams Bongaree
