Dear readers,

Welcome to our special edition featuring Queen Elizabeth II, where we are looking at the life of an amazing woman, who achieved many wonderful things and the passing of an era. I by no means am a royalist. However, my beautiful grandmother was, and I remember as a child, listening to my Gran talk about the Queen and tell us stories about her. I guess it brings such fond memories of that time, that when I heard of her passing, I was hit with a wave of genuine sadness. While putting our feature about the Queen together, I learnt more about the Queen as a person as well. Whether you like her or not, you must admire the things she achieved in her lifetime and do so with such dignity and grace. Then it hit me…

Queen Elizabeth is the end of an era. The things that I grew up with are all, one by one, fading away. Making room for the next generation's way of life. Kids being out on their bikes with friends until the lights came on, the video shops that were a fun outing just in itself, Saturday morning cartoons, creating a mixed tape off top 40 Australia, Rubix cubes, elastics, our music made sense and we had a large variety of magazines like Dolly, Smash Hits, Cleo and Seventeen just to name a few. I grew up wearing pantyhose, did a beauty grooming and deportment course and was taught how to dance for the balls that were frequently held. I made my debut like every

other girl around me did and it was a chance for us to dress up and wear a beautiful white gown. Sadly, there are little to no debutante balls anymore, you arrange a blind date over the internet, I can’t tell when one song finishes and another starts as the music all sounds the same, the only mail I get bills, no handwritten letters, I could go on and on.

But all good things must come to an end they say, so I will look back and smile about the era I enjoyed and bid it, and Queen Elizabeth II a fond farewell, thanking them for the wonderful memories. Let’s see what the next chapter will bring us!

Until next time,

Take care,

Cherrie

daily sun protection

This might be obvious but it’s still important enough to warrant a first place on the list. Australia’s climate can be brutal. The sun is harsh, and desert air dries out the delicate skin of the face. That’s why most Australian women makes proper protection an essential part of her beauty routine. Quality sunscreen with an appropriate protective factor saves you worlds of problems.

Skin cancer is obviously the scariest concern, especially for ladies who have exposed moles or other sensitive spots. Additionally, damage from the sun’s rays can exacerbate wrinkles or make them appear too soon. It can also provoke the appearance of dark blotches on the skin.

All in all, if you live in a hot sunny place, choose a broad-spectrum product and make sure it has an SPF of at least 30. Apply it every day. Don’t forget to use it in winter, too!

Natural skincare

Healthy skin and a clear complexion

are something we all strive to achieve. While we do still indulge in various beauty treatments and skin care products, natural ones are definitely the top favourites.

There’s a lot of love for probiotic skincare in Australia, as well as for skin-friendly oils. Tea tree and jojoba oil are the most popular. These treatments help with a whole host of skin issues, including acne, wrinkles, and dryness.

mild curls and pick the intensity of the waves that you like best. Then give them a few targeted strokes to make them look windswept and charmingly disordered. If you don’t like curlers, use some mousse instead. Gently scrunch up your hair while it’s still wet and you get gentle waves that look more natural.

We already mentioned that particular beachy quality that Australian beauty seems to have. Aside from a healthy tan, this is thanks to a particular way of our hair. The key is to have it looking messy on purpose, and the best way to achieve that is with some strategic tousling. The most popular hairstyle for this aesthetic is the loose beach waves.

With exactly the right amount of subtle messiness that gives off that “just woke up, but luckily look pretty in the morning” kind of vibe.

Excessive sweating is characterised by abnormally increased sweating, more than what is required to regulate body temperature. Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis affects millions of people around the world. Excessive underarm sweating, also known as axillary hyperhidrosis, & it can cause wardrobe issues that no-one wants to live with, those

tell-tale sweat marks which can ruin your clothes and make you feel self-conscious.

The most common areas of the body that are affected by hyperhidrosis are the hands, feet, underarms, scalp and groin, due to a higher concentration of sweat glands in these areas.

At L J Aesthetics clinic, we perform treatments for hyperhidrosis using muscle

relaxant (also known as anti-wrinkle injections) this treatment has been found to be very effective in the treatment of excessive sweating, especially for the underarms, palms and feet. The effects of these small injections usually last from six to twelve months. Topical local anesthetic or ice can be applied to the area before the procedure for your comfort.

Now, there’s a lasting solution that can make embarrassing sweat patches a thing of the past.

COMFORT &; SAFETY

There is little to no downtime, no surgery and minimal discomfort but you may experience some tenderness and bruising to the area treated.

Back Local Businesses with New Moreton Money Gift Card

Businesses can now sign up to be part of the new Moreton Money gift card promotion to help support local businesses get back on their feet after a difficult year of disruptions due to the weather.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Moreton Bay economy and they’ve been doing a lot of heavy lifting over the past few years with COVID-19 and the disastrous recent flood events,” Mayor Peter Flannery said. “This is just one small way we can all show our support and help them to not only get back on their feet but start thriving again. The way it works is local businesses sign up to be part

of the Moreton Money gift card promotion through their local chamber of commerce.

And once we have enough businesses onboard, residents will be able to purchase gift cards for their friends and family to use in local Moreton Bay businesses like a regular gift card. This means the money and jobs stay in local hands, and with Christmas shopping looming, this is the perfect way to spoil that special someone while saying thank you to our hardworking local businesses.

The gift cards will be valid for three years and can be used more than once, allowing plenty of time to support businesses affected by the pandemic, flood events, staff shortages, and supply chain issues. Small businesses who want to cash in on the program and accept Moreton Money gift cards should register their interest on MoretonMoney. com and they will be contacted by the nearest participating

Chamber of Commerce. Council has also marked the first anniversary of joining the Queensland Small Business Friendly Council initiative.

“Small businesses are at the heart of our local economy, so when small business succeeds, we all succeed - they are more likely to use local suppliers, hire locals, and create local opportunities,” Mayor Flannery said. “We want to instil and celebrate community pride in the region’s business community and make sure the

businesses grow and employ more of our residents.”

This is all part of our Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), a blueprint for a bigger, bolder and brighter economy which will ultimately create 100,000 new jobs in the Moreton Bay Region through to 2041.”

CONNECT WITH THE CHILD WITHIN

Last Sunday, I had the privilege of being a part of the Birali “Creative Spirit Fair” in Beachmere. It was a beautiful day, both with the sun shining, and the gathering of like-minded people coming together to celebrate children, their spirit, and creativity.

It reminded me of why I send my daughter there; how she has a love of learning because she is being taught gently and creatively which enhances her curiosity and encourages her to ask more questions about the world around her.

I always love being a part of such events as it reiterates what is truly important; “To celebrate life and the simple things, that it is in simplicity that we can find the most rewards.”

Remember, we all can connect with the child within, no matter what age, when we allow time to be curious about the world around us, and open to all possibilities. To make sure we enjoy time to play, dance, share moments with friends, have conversations, including an abundance of laughter and hugs, embrace the benefits of connecting within and with those around us, to welcome those simple moments to help replenish and heal our souls.

Whilst I wasn’t able to fully participate in the day, as I was overseeing a Mosaics and a Health and Wellness tent, one thing was evident, that they both shared; it was a place where people came to be still, even if it was for a short time.

As I witnessed children and adults play with tiles and exercise their creativity, I observed that their focus became so fixed on their designs, that it became a short form of meditation, where their minds became unburdened.

Those that came to visit me for health and wellness either wanted to experience the peace, calm and relaxation of a massage or Reiki and to find a sanctuary from the busy world or came for guidance and clarity in their life path. They became so focused on what I was saying that they became very present in the ‘Now’.

At the end of the day, I spent time in reflection, wondering how often people make a conscious effort to enjoy space in stillness, whether it be in the form of healing, creativity, or guidance.

How often are we present in just a moment we are in, enjoying just that, without the mind taking us away somewhere else?

It made me realise that when we connect with the child within, we remember to play and just be present at the moment that we are in.

Need to find your inner child, have more fun, or play and have peace?

MANGO HILL
Issue 175 Sept 23, 2022 11 HEALTH, WEALTH & COMMUNITY

Hi again.

Today Instead of giving you things to try I am going to explain how yoga as a philosophy works. So, yoga was originally started as a way to purify and detoxify your body by moment and breath and channelling energy. The concept is by using your breath and movement of your body you can remove blockages and help eliminate the damage that stress does to our body by blocking the natural flow of energy and tightening our muscles.

A good example of this is a stress headache stemming from tension in the shoulders and neck. This practice stems back 10000 years or so and some of the poses were taken from nature and animals which also explains some of the names e.g., Down dog cobra etc. Yoga is not just about movement and stretching it incorporates using your breath with the movement and training your mind to be in the present moment concentrating on your movement and breathing instead of letting your mind run wild like the crazy circus it can

be. (Speaking for myself here). So, you may ask why is this person always banging on about yoga?

I am going to share some personal insight as to why I think it's important to share this info. It has helped me overcome asthma and injury, in very trying and stressful times in my life it has been my rock. In this day and age of the quick fix and everything costing a small fortune, I am constantly grateful for this practice which cost me nothing, but my time and I do not need fancy things or places to practice.

So, I feel if I can help one other person by sharing what I have learnt it is well worth it. Remember you don't need to turn yourself into a pretzel to benefit you just need to breathe, stretch and be in the moment.

Sending love and light your way.

Namaste, Karyn.

One of our grandchildren asked me (not long after I’d qualified for the aged pension), “How much are you paid for being old, Granddad?”. After I’d stopped chuckling, I explained that the Government was giving me back some of the massive taxation revenue I had given the Government in almost 40 years in the workforce (in simpler terms than that, of course).

That seemed to satisfy his query, at the time. I often wonder how he views what we call “the process of ageing”, and looking after our elderly, today.

For my part I am becoming aware, more and more, of just how fortunate we are to reach that “process of ageing” stage in life; many people don’t make it. It’s a privilege, I reckon.

The World Health Organisation

(WHO) tells us there are just over 1 billion (1000million) people over 60 years “young” in our world, and the WHO estimates this will rise to a 1.4billion by 2030, and 2.1 billion by 2050. (That 2050 level would represent 20% of the world’s total population, then).

So where do we (in Australia) stand in relation to how we care for our elderly? In some official world ratings (by British and U.S. authorities, and a couple of European agencies) we rate as high as #5 in the world…… others, in the top 10 ….and in others still, we don’t rate at all! Few people – especially those touched by “the process of ageing”, daily - would regard our aged care record as perfect (or even close to it). There is always room (and a need) for improvement.

GROWING OLD: It’s A Privilege !

But we are fortunate (rather than “lucky”) to have the support systems that we do have, when we see, hear, or read about conditions (for elderly people) in so many areas of the developed world. We are also very fortunate in the number of volunteers and privately sourced (and staffed) services that swing in to fill in some of the “gaps” in the publicly funded programs available for our elderly (and not-so-elderly people) in need, all around the country. We see evidence of this, every day, in our Bribie Island region alone (which represents a good microscopic example of what is happening around Australia, every day).

The plain truth is, many services for people in need would grind to a halt – or just

stagger on, unable to meet many needs or requirements – without the thousands of volunteers and privately-funded service workers in action, every day, among our needy. We owe them, big-time!

One very pertinent fact emerging from the WHO studies and projections is that, as our population ages, those over the 60s (as a bloc, or percentage of the population) will become increasingly important, to governments everywhere, in deciding their electoral fortunes, in future. No doubt this “message” is not lost in our political circles – or among advocacy groups pursuing the best deal they can get from our governments, for our elderly…. and nor should it be.

Thank you to our Community

The Bribie Island members of D950 Passport Rotary Club would like to thank our wonderful community for supporting our very successful fundraiser on 7 September 2022.

The performance of Confetti & Chaos, at the Bribie Island RSL, was a sensational night of fun, laughter, and scrumptious food. This was our third show with Interactive Theatre International, a professional theatre company, that produces and promotes highquality interactive comedy theatre, children's shows, and cabaret around the world.

The show was a surprise wedding for Will and Stacey, and the couple have no idea that Stacey’s parents were putting on this wedding for them. The guests very quickly work out that they are part of the show and take on roles as bridesmaids, dressmakers, aunts and uncles. It was very funny and worked brilliantly as an immersive dinner, with two hours and 15 minutes of constant activity and laughter.

The cast for the Bribie Island show featured four remarkable actors who played numerous roles throughout the night. Monique Lewis-Reynolds, Jack Newell, Liam Seymour and Rebecca Fortuna, are all well known in the Australian entertainment world. Jack,

Liam and Rebecca have featured in Australian movies, musicals and cabarets. Monique has worked for over 20 years both on and off stage in Australian musicals. Over 20 years both on- and off-stage for various Australian musicals.

A big thank you to Samantha Thornton, RSL Events Manager extraordinaire, and the RSL staff. The three-course meal, service and set up were superb.

And best of all our Rotary Passport team, who should not be confused with the Rotary Club of Bribie Island, raised muchneeded funds for Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal to End Polio campaign. For every dollar we raised, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation add another two. With this contribution, we anticipate that we have raised over $7,000.

Two stories of parental love, the first of which I must admit to finding somewhat irritating, but the second leaving me full of admiration.

It would seem that a certain Australian Magpie has taken a strong dislike to my Latin Lover, Ferrari. I understand that this is the time of year when mother magpies are intent on protecting their eggs and young, and this is quite commendable. Any intruder into their territory will be threatened with swoops and dive-bombing from behind, coupled with angry clicking of beaks and a menacing flurry of feathers, together making a quite alarming noise. No doubt you will have noticed pedestrians and cyclists wearing atop their protective headwear, a series of rods sticking out from the same, in order to preserve the wearer from attack.

A truly Australian millinery fashion, producing many a scornful comment from our Overseas visitors, that is, until they too are attacked by an angry mother bird, intent on defending her young.

What I fail to understand about this particular magpie is that, despite seeing my scooter and myself venturing past her territory several times a day, she never seems to learn that we pose no threat at all to her offspring. She is expending a lot of energy which might be far more usefully employed in gathering food and feeding her young! Further, has she not learned that Ferrari remains impervious to her threatening behaviour, whilst I remain protected beneath his canopy? Maybe she has realised that we can do no actual harm but is expressing her artistic critique of my “circus tent” in the only way she knows how. Should I write an angry Post on social media defending everyone's right to individual cultural tastes? “Twitter” perhaps?

Whilst wishing Mother Magpie and her brood well, I will turn to another breed of bird, exemplifying virtues that can be universally applauded.

The other morning, I was making an early-morning trip to my letterbox when two “healthy walkers”, as my husband

used to call them, drew my attention to a baby mickey bird (Noisy miner, or on more formal occasions, Manorina melanocephala). This poor bird had somewhat prematurely fallen out of his nest and was calling for his mother. She, equally distressed, answered him with encouraging calls of her own, only leaving him for a minute or two to collect food which she pushed into his ever-gaping beak. Obviously, the fall had not diminished Junior's appetite! He was able to flutter his wings, but not to properly fly. However, he seemed lively enough and never ceased in his demands to be fed. We debated as to the best course of action. Should we put a fast end to the suffering of the bird? No one volunteered for the job, especially in front of his mother, lest we should be visited by a real-life playout of Alfred Hitchcock's “The Birds”. It was suggested that we take Junior to a Vet or Wild-life Carer, but later I decided that this would be traumatic for both mother and baby. We did try moving Junior off the concrete

driveway, where we felt he might be more comfortable, but he fluttered his wings and half flew, half hopped, back to his original position. He was a very determined baby bird, with a mind of his own.

In the end, I decided to let Nature, red in tooth and claw, take its course, and bow to the inevitable. The Healthy Walkers went on their way, but during the day I kept checking on Mother and Child's progress. Mother kept up her non-stop feeding of her demanding youngster, but when I made my last check, just before dark, I could not find Junior, and neither could I find his corpse. Sad, as I felt the least I could do was to give the little bird Braveheart an honourable burial, with a short, but respectful Eulogy.

Early the next morning I checked again, but the night had been bitterly cold and, as I expected, I could find neither Junior nor hear his mother. I thought the worst! But then the Sun came out, both literally and metaphorically. I heard the same call as the previous day.

Joy of Joys; there was Junior!  He

had survived the night and was able to flutter into the sunshine, hungry as ever, and being fed by his ever-caring mother. And not only her; it would seem that she had spread the word and Father, too, had been reminded of his responsibilities and was also feeding Junior. Along with Junior's parents, I noted with interest that other “aunts” were giving a helping 'beak' enabling Mother to gain some nourishment for herself. What an inspiring example of, “it takes a village to raise a child”! Again, I kept an eye on his progress throughout the day. Junior appeared to have gained more strength and weight and the last time I checked, just before dark, he had actually managed to fly to almost the top rung of a wire fence. His demanding cries were still being attended to by his mother. I began to feel more optimistic about his chances of survival if he managed to pull through the cold, dark night ahead.

As soon as I woke up the next morning, I rushed to see how he had fared. Alas, I could not

find him. Had he fallen from his perch again, perhaps been eaten by a predator? I went indoors and tried to cheer myself up with a restorative cup of coffee. I tried to be philosophical about his fate but failed.

Later, seeing my Slovenian neighbour, I joined her for a chat, and she pointed out to me how noisy and excited the birds were becoming.

You have guessed correctly; there was Junior in a tree, making valiant attempts to feed himself, encouraged by the other members of his mob. He had flown and gained height, no mean feat for a young bird. He had found his wings! Independence was within his grasp!

Now, I do not want to hear from any Ornithological Pessimists, telling me what I already know; that Junior has a long way to go before he can father birds of his own. Yes, the statistics may be stacked against him, but I am sure my readers will join me in wishing him all the best! He certainly deserves it!

LADIES OF THE LINKS DINNER CLUB NEWS FUN FUNDRAISING

Charity Begins at Home

During the financial year 2021/22 the members of the Ladies of the Links held 10 memorable dinners spread across the RSL and the Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club.

It is the friendship and camaraderie amongst like

minded women that makes this club the success that it is.

Springing from this success is the support that members and their friends, including donations from local businesses and political representatives, put behind the two main fund-raising events that were held over this period.

Fashion Parade Auction

The first event was held in October 2021 at the RSL. This was a fashion parade with the theme ‘Melbourne Cup and

Evening Wear’. All garments were sourced from the Bribie Island based charity stores with a budget to be adhered to. The Committee each invited a member of the dinner group to dress in the purchased garments to which accessories were added. At the conclusion of the parade the clothes were then auctioned. The amount raised from this evening provided a pleasing boost to the charity fund and much fun was had by all!

Elvis – the Movie

The second fund raising event was the premiere screening of ‘Elvis’ – the movie. This ticketed, red-carpet event saw 160 patrons fill the two Bribie cinemas thus making it the resounding success the Committee believed it would be!! This event added significant funds to the charity accumulation.

Charity Recipient

On the evening of Thursday 23rd June, members attending the AGM voted overwhelmingly to donate all monies raised during the past financial year to Bribie Island Kids Educational Support (B.I.K.E.S). The following dinner held on Thursday 25th August 2022 we were honoured to present a cheque for $3,500.00 to Mr Ken Pica a representative of B.I.K.E.S.

Dear Pumicestone

Have your say about the next Bribie Island Bridge

Everywhere I go, people want to talk about our Bribie Bridge! Next year the Bribie Bridge will have its 60th birthday, and the Bridge has a special place in the heart of our community.

I love looking back at photos of the building and opening of our Bridge to be reminded of a simpler time, and certainly a time when there was a lot less traffic!

While the Bridge is safe and regularly inspected and maintained, it’s time to look to the future.

Our community is passionate about this issue, so I worked hard to get our Bribie Bridge on the agenda.

I was elected in 2020 with a commitment of $4 million towards early planning and design for a future Bribie Bridge, and now our Palaszczuk Government has commissioned a business case to deliver on that promise.

Consultancy firm AECOM have secured the contract to prepare the business case for a future Bribie Bridge, including by doing broad community consultation to find out what is most important to residents.

bridge? How could a future bridge maximise safety for boaties?

Community consultation is expected to start later this year. It’s important that you have your say so TMR knows what’s most important to our community as we plan for the future.

If you head to my website, you can sign up to get notified when consultation opens and updates on the Bribie Bridge business case.

Sign up at www.aliking.org/what-ali-s-workingon/bribie-island-bridge/ to be notified when the community consultation opens.

I don’t want anyone to miss out of having their say, so make sure you sign up so I can get in touch with you when community consultation opens.

In the meantime, you can visit www.tmr.qld.gov. au and search 'Bribie Island Bridge planning' to read more about the business case.

If you’ve got any questions or need more information please get in touch with my office on 3474 2100 or at pumicestone@parliament.qld.gov.au

Soon I'll be asking you to have your say on what matters most for a future Bribie Bridge. Are better active transport facilities across the bridge your priority? Is it the aesthetics of a future

THE SPIRIT OF NATURE ON BRIBIE

We live on an island jewel, surrounded by sparkling water and clean blue skies. We are privileged to inhabit this space where each day, we can enjoy the natural beauty around us. We feel the spirit of nature in the leaves on the trees, the ebb and flow of the tides, the birds on the wind, the sand in our toes. We watch this spirit manifest itself in the growth, movement, tranquillity and death of natural elements.

The earth is alive. Nature is alive. There is spirit in all natural forms. Everything is alive The spirit of nature that we enjoy

AUSTRALIA POST AND BEYOND BLUE TEAM

UP FOR A MENTAL HEALTH CHECK-IN

Australia Post’s popular free postcards will arrive in millions of letterboxes and at post offices around the country, helping Australians to check in and support one another with R U OK? Day and in the lead-up to Mental Health Month.

In partnership with Beyond Blue, Australia Post will once again deliver three million free postcards, which Australians can send free of charge to show they are thinking of family and friends.

As well as a blank, prepaid postcard to send to family or friends, there’s also a tear-off part that contains helpful information about the importance of connection for our mental health.

Australia Post General Manager Community and Stakeholder Engagement Nicky Tracey said the postcards were a popular way to stay in touch when first launched in 2021 during lockdowns, and she was proud to continue to partner with Beyond Blue to connect millions of Australians.

“We were thrilled with the response to this wellbeing

initiative last year. It was great to hear stories of people writing postcards for the first time in years and also the joy of finding a surprise message from a loved one in their letter box.”

“This year, with many Australian households under cost-of-living and other pressures, this is a really simple way people can reach out to check in on loved ones or send messages of love and support.”

Beyond Blue Chief Executive Officer Georgie Harman said the partnership with Australia Post played a significant role in sharing important mental health messages with the community.

“Australia Post has delivered mental health information to more than 7 million households since our partnership began in 2020. This postcard campaign is another way to get people talking about mental health and supporting each other.”

The postcards will be delivered to suburban and regional households and are also available at selected post offices around the country.

Everyday tips for mental health and wellbeing

When we connect, we feel better. That’s why we’re helping to connect more people with mental health information. Keep this postcard on the fridge so everyone at home can use it.

Stay connected time with a letter, them a call.

Keep active Exercise is great for your mental health. Choosing something with a social element that you really enjoy is ideal.

Reduce stress

It’s important to keep an eye out for stress and to find healthy, practical ways to manage it.

Sleep well Quality sleep helps you better manage your emotions. for six to eight hours and avoid devices before bed.

Everyone has a story to tell, but no one can tell your story like you can. Lots of us think that one day we would like to document our stories before they are lost, but writing it is not as easy as it seems, and it can become a task you never get around to. At Your Life, Your Words, we work with you to create a story of your life, written by us, but told in your voice. Talking with one of our talented professional writers in the comfort of your own home, the stress of writing is taken away, you simply talk, and we listen. Your writer will then begin crafting your memoirs, working with you through each step until your beautiful book is ready. Should you choose, your writer can also arrange for a professionally edited video to be filmed of you to compliment your memoir, a fitting

way to ensure that your voice is captured forever.

And it’s not just the beautiful memoir and video that you will enjoy. Our customers are often surprised at how much joy they experience recalling the special moments of their lives, as well as remembering events and special times that are often rediscovered after years of being trapped in memory. Your writer will bring their experience and trustworthiness as a confidante, ensuring you can be authentically yourself. This can be a very liberating experience for many as one memory triggers another and another. Often, we hear that hours after our writers leave, customers find themselves deep in their photo albums or trawling for documents and letters, special memories and mementos. Your Life, Your Words, presents the experience of reflection

as well as a document and video of your story for others to share.

The feedback we have received from family and friends of clients is overwhelmingly positive too, with loved ones afforded the chance to hear the stories of your life in your own words and for families to develop a better understanding of their history and the forbears that shaped them. Whilst online family history data, military records and Electoral roles give families never-before access to their loved one’s biographical history, no information source can ever provide the stories of your life like you can. Families treasure the book and video as a documented connection to you that is a give from the heart – a gift for future generations that you are yet to meet, and a way for them to know much more than just their genetic

heritage. Even families who have a lot of access to their family history report that your memoir is unlike anything else they have.

And did you know telling your story is good for you? Studies have shown that cognitive benefits occur when old memories are triggered. Sleeping can improve when memories are recalled and released, and even personal relationships can improve.

Psychologists have also discovered the power of storytelling on resilience for both the individual storyteller and their family.

Working with Your Life, Your Words to document your story is an irreplaceable and timeless gift to yourself and to those you love Please contact Caroline on 0401 544 153

Your talented and empathetic writer will open the door to your heart, to let your story come to life. The discussions you will have will result in the most beautiful and heartfelt memoirs.

If you choose to, you may have a special video recording taken with you speaking directly to your loved ones.

Perhaps you will share some wise words and some special messages you may have for them.

You may say I love you as many times as you like!

Grey-crowned Babblers were to be found on Bribie Island some time ago, up until about 2011. There was also a small group at Sandstone Point near the Lotus Pond, but I am not aware of any sightings recently. We can always live in hope that they will return.

They are the largest of the four species of Babblers found in Australia being 26-29 cm in length and weighing 60-85 g. The upper parts are brownish grey with brown tones underneath. Crowns and breasts are grey, and throats and the tips of their long tails are white. Eyes are yellow and dark patches of feathers streak across the face to their bills, which are curved downwards. Babblers are very sociable and noisy birds and chatter continuously with other birds living in their groups of sometimes up to 20. Members of these groups are mostly family and young birds from earlier broods. Movements on the ground are usually a series of bouncing hops. Their flying skills are poor, and their preference is to hop rather than fly. Their life expectancy in the wild is about 4 years.

Babblers prefer open woodlands with grassy areas such as eucalypt and acacia forests and farmlands. They are territorial occupying areas of up to 50 hectares with 10 hectares being the most common. It is not uncommon for neighbouring groups to battle over territories. Because of their undeveloped flying skills, they are mainly sedentary as they find it difficult to cross large areas where food and water are scarce. They are found in northern, central and eastern Australia and are also in PNG and Indonesia.

By: Marj Webber

GREY-CROWNED Babbler

Pomatostomus temporalis

Insects are their main source of food. These are obtained by foraging on the ground, lifting the bark off trunks of trees and hopping from branch to branch to the tops of trees, but their food source is mainly on the ground. Seeds are occasionally on the menu. While feeding they are continuously on the move and chatting with other group members.

Breeding takes place usually between July and February. Nests are large domes of untidy sticks of about 4050 cm in diameter with an entrance tunnel on the side. This is protected by protruding sticks above and below the hole forming a roof and landing platform for the opening. Nests are

usually 3-7 m above the ground in upright forks and lined with bark, grass, feathers and sometimes man-made fibres. Nest building is a communal activity where the brooding females do most of the work but are helped by other members. Many nests are built by the group – one nest for breeding purposes, and others for the rest of the family to roost. 2-3 chestnut and cream patterned eggs are laid by brooding females. Females on the nests are fed by members of the group that also pitch in to help feed the young. Two broods are usually produced in a season. Nests are maintained throughout the

year and often used again in the following seasons.

Grey-crowned babblers are often called “Yahoos” after one of their calls. Females call “Ya” and males answer “Hoo”. This interaction might continue for some time.

Threats to nests can be Butcherbirds, Crows, Currawongs and reptiles, which given the chance may steal the eggs and attack the chicks.

If their territory has an oversupply of Noisy Miners, they may feel threatened by their bossy and aggressive behaviour.

Conservation status is secure in Qld and NT, rare in SA, endangered in Vic, vulnerable in NSW, and not present in Tasmania.

Sometimes I wish I had a recording for the information I regularly discuss with clients. Someone even suggested I do that – maybe.

Starting up new businesses in a new entity is a lot of initial work with all the registrations that are required. These include Tax File Number, ABN and possibly GST, registration as an employer, STP set up with the ATO, superannuation set up for employees and a choice of computer programme. And then there is the choice of entity in which the business will be established.

The list can be daunting at first, but once completed the only concern is getting the information into the computer correctly to enable all the reports and requisites to move forward smoothly.

This is where having a computer programme that allows me into your accounting package is so useful to you and allows me to adjust and show you where improvements can be made.

Unfortunately, in todays’ work environment, the responsibility for much more data information falls on client shoulders. Monthly or quarterly, there is a BAS statement for GST, wages and income tax instalment. Monthly or quarterly employee wages information must be sent digitally to the ATO under the new STP reporting. Super data and payments of same are generally quarterly reporting and can be made via the ATO or directly to the chosen superfund.

My office is entirely up to date on all these areas, and I am more than happy to help you get your business going and assist in the everyday running and preparation of the reporting. For some clients, they have thrown their hands up and left me to do all but the actual data entry of the bank accounts.

It is important to get everything correct and balanced else you will have the ATO or employees complaining. At the end of the year all the different facets within your business must balance with each other. Carolyn Wheeler

“Before that, it wasn’t long ago that bushfires ripped through parts of Moreton Bay in 2018 and 2019 - so we need to be prepared for threats on all fronts to keep our residents prepared and resilient.

“To do this we review our Local Disaster Management Plan so residents can update their disaster response plans with the most up-to-date information to prepare their families and their homes for the worst.

“We want to be upfront with the community about these risks, so we can continue to work positively towards building the resilience of our region and our communities together.

Constance said he was proud of the Moreton Alert text message system that helped inform residents with key information throughout the February/March floods.

“The Moreton Alert system is a free subscriber service we’ve provided to the community since 2012 to provide SMS, email and voice alert messages for all types of different hazards that they may be exposed to,” he said.

“It allows us to target specific areas to deliver flood warning messages and with that residents are able to respond accordingly. During that time, we’ve sent out 1.185 million SMS messages, 461,565 e-mails and 11,638 voicemails to residents.

“During the events of February and March we sent out 253 targeted flood warnings to residents, and by context, we only sent out 53 warnings for

the previous four months, which shows how important it can be in a disaster.

“We currently have more than 67,000 locals who are subscribed to the service but ideally, we’d like every resident in Moreton Bay to be subscribed, so please jump on Council’s website and subscribe if you haven’t already.

“We are now beginning work to provide this service catering for languages other than English, relevant to the needs of our region. We've launched this in Arabic and we're looking at developing further languages to make it even more accessible.

“This is a great function of the Moreton Alert system that makes it so much more accessible to provide key lifesaving information to as many ethnicities as possible.”

Dining with the Queen

When it comes to food Queen Elizabeth’s tastes were mostly traditional. Of course, like the Queen Mum, one of her favourite beverages was a nice gin mixed with Deboned on ice with a nice slice of lemon. The drink became a favourite during the Diamond Jubilee and was renamed the Diamond Dubonnet. A fun fact about this is she enjoyed this stiff drink just before bedtime. Traditionally her Royal Highness ate a very healthy breakfast that consists of cornflakes and Special K. This was often topped with dried fruit and macadamia nuts.

Lunch for the reigning Queen was usually very simple and healthy. A typical offering would be a grilled Dover sole, placed on a bed of wilted spinach. At tea, her favourite food is another simple one. Homemade

bread and butter and strawberry or raspberry jam sandwiches. Her favourite fruit was peaches. She also enjoyed fresh berries that she would pick with the family and then enjoy with clotted cream later at dinner.

Her tastes tended to be simple and when she dined alone, she usually just has a dish of fruit. If she had sandwiches, the crusts had been cut off. She didn’t like spicy or exotic food and liked plainer dishes like Coronation chicken.

The Queen was very considerate and told her Royal Chef to prepare any favourite foods of other members of the family. For instance, if Prince William was over then she would tell the chef to cook Chocolate Biscuit Cake which is one of his favourites. When it comes to dessert her main passion was chocolate.

She loved chocolate cake and forbears her favourite was a royal specialty called the Chocolate Perfection pie. Other cake favourites included ginger cake, honey and cream sponge cake and chocolate éclairs.

Another favourite royal treat was Jam Pennies. These are coinsized raspberry jam sandwiches that are cut into circles the size of an old English penny.

Queen Elizabeth also enjoyed wild game or fish from the land such as venison or salmon from Balmoral or pheasant from Sandringham. A traditional roast beef and potato dish were also one of her favourites, especially for Sunday lunch at the palace. At all times of the day, her favourite kind of tea was Darjeeling! She hated waste and her kitchen staff and footmen usually got to enjoy any leftovers.

President Eisenhower and his wife Marnie had visited the Queen at her Balmoral estate in Scotland and were so taken with the baked goods they

enjoyed during their stay, that she decided to share her recipe with the couple.

Her Majesty wrote a personal message alongside the recipe in her letter to the President.

"Dear Mr President," the letter began.

"Seeing a picture of you in today's newspaper, standing in front of a barbecue grilling quail, reminded me that I had never sent you the recipe of the drop scones which I promised you at Balmoral. I hope you will find them successful.

She continued: "Though the quantities are for 16 people when there are fewer, I generally put in less flour and milk, but use the other ingredients as stated."

And she offered up some extra cooking tips. “I have also tried using golden syrup or treacle instead of only sugar and that can be very good, too.

"I think the mixture needs a great deal of beating while making and shouldn't stand about too long before cooking."

Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

AND A QUEEN IS BORN….

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was never meant to be Queen, but even in the early days of her reign, it seemed she was fulfilling a destiny.

Arriving at 2.40 am on April 21, 1926, at 17 Bruton Street, Mayfair, she became the first sovereign to be born in a private home. As third in line to the throne, her caesarean birth was witnessed by the home secretary, as dictated by tradition – one that the Queen later ended. Crowds on the street for the general strike meant the new baby’s pram had to be ushered quietly out of a back door for her daily walks. Elizabeth was educated at home and her education included constitutional history and law in preparation for her assumption of the throne.

The future queen was barely a teenager when World War II threatened her nation, but she was determined to do what she could for her country — and she soon became the first female member of the royal family to enlist in the British Army. When World War II broke out in 1939, Princess Elizabeth was just 13 years old. Throughout her teenage years, she contributed to the war effort in any way she could — and even enlisted in the British Army. Despite her perpetual prim and proper demeanour in her later life, there are many surprising stories about the future Queen Elizabeth II during World War II.

Princess Elizabeth was the first woman in the British royal family to join the military. In her role as a mechanic, the future queen took apart engines, changed tires, and learned to drive trucks and ambulances. The press dubbed her “Princess Auto Mechanic,” and Elizabeth reportedly enjoyed getting her hands dirty and showing her hard work off to her family and friends. After the war, she could

often be seen driving her cars around her estates. She was even known to diagnose and repair the engines in her own vehicles at times. Though she was royalty, there wasn’t always special treatment for Princess Elizabeth during World War II. She was determined to serve her country the same way others were required to. And when the Allies emerged victorious in the end, she slipped out of Buckingham Palace and partied in the streets of London — just like everyone else. The Queen not only served in the Armed Forces but was royal head of the British Army, Navy, and Air Force

Falling in love

The Queen and Prince Philip's story began when the pair met in 1939 and the Queen was just a teenager. During a visit to the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Philip was given the responsibility of entertaining 13-year-old 'Lilibet' as she was known, and her nine-year-old sister Margaret. Elizabeth wasn’t the only one taken with the handsome prince. King George VI reportedly felt Philip to be “the right man for the job” of the soon-to-be queen’s consort. The young lovers spent years keeping in touch by

exchanging letters with each other during World War II. Their engagement was finally announced in July 1947, just after Elizabeth turned 21. Philip renounced his rights to the Greek and Danish thrones, and the couple was married in November 1947. Like other brides in the years

is their only daughter. She was given the Princess Royal title in 1987.

Prince Andrew was born in February 1960. He was given the Duke of York title in 1986 when he married Sarah Ferguson. The youngest of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s children, Prince Edward, was born in March 1964. He was given the Earl of Wessex title in 1999 when he married Sophie Rhys-Jones.

ration coupons to buy the materials for her wedding dress. The wedding itself was a grand affair, with 2,000 guests at Westminster Abbey, a reception at Buckingham Palace and a 9-foot-tall wedding cake.

The royal newlyweds spent the first couple of years of their marriage in Malta, where Prince Philip was stationed with the Royal Navy. However, the relocation proved to be short-lived, with King George unexpectedly passing away in 1952 after several years of illness. This was just six years into their marriage, Elizabeth, then 27, became the Queen of England in 1953.

With Prince Philip, the queen gave birth to four children, The queen’s oldest son is Charles, who was born in November 1948, before she’d ascended to the throne. Anne, Princess Royal, is the queen and Prince Philip’s second child, and she

After months of meticulous preparation, on 2 June 1953, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey. Much of Britain shared the moment too as it was the first time a coronation was televised. The following year, The Queen and Prince Philip spent six months touring the world. She was the first reigning British monarch to visit Australia in what was the first of 16 visits to this country.

And the message was all about helping others; the Queen was a patron for more than 600 charities, including military, medical and animal organisations.

"I often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things: volunteers, carers, community organisers and good neighbours; unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special," she said in one Christmas Day address.

During her reign, she awarded thousands of people with honours - from MBEs and knighthoods to the Victoria Cross. From the annual Trooping the Colour to Royal Ascot, people of all ages embraced the monarchy under Elizabeth's reign, but her popularity was tested in 1997.

Family ties..........cont
Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

The death of Princess Diana in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36 saw a huge outpouring of grief from the British public. But the Queen was not seen publicly for five days. Following a public outcry, she made a national address in which she paid tribute to her daughter-inlaw.

The British royal family continued to expand - and her brood of great-grandchildren grew with it. But the changing family dynamic ushered in an unexpected development. Prince Harry along with his wife Meghan Markle stepped back from senior duties and later went public with damaging accusations of racism within the royal family. The Queen was said to be deeply hurt, but Harry made it clear his relationship with his grandmother was strong.

Throughout her life, the Queen’s dedication to her family – and the Commonwealth – was unwavering, even in the difficult early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was forced into isolation with her husband in Windsor Castle but remained in the public eye. A rare TV address - only the fifth of her reign - offered hope. "Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it, " she said.

"I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge. And those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any."

A new chapter

As Britain’s pandemic death toll soared, the monarch experienced a profound personal loss with her husband of 73 years dying two months before his 100th birthday in April 2021. COVID-19 restrictions meant Prince Philip's funeral was as he wanted it, without too much pomp or ceremony.

Government regulations also saw The Queen sitting alone during the service, an image which resonated with the thousands of families who were forced to honour loved ones in a similar way.

She soon returned to work, with video calls from Windsor Castle, and before long she was back meeting world leaders. After a short hospital stay, she addressed the COP26 climate summit virtually, reflecting on her own mortality.

"Of course, the benefits of such actions will not be there to enjoy for all of us here today: none of us will live forever,” she said. "But we are doing this not for ourselves but for our children and our children's children, and those who will follow in their footsteps.”

Her absence was felt a week later on one of the most important days on her calendar, with health reasons forcing her to cancel her appearance at Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee - 70 years on the throne. She was the longest-reigning British monarch, surpassing the 63year reign of her great-greatgrandmother Queen Victoria. But in May she withdrew from the State Opening of Parliament and the reading of the Queen's speech because of "episodic mobility problems." It's the first time since 1963 she has not attended the event.

The Queen handed her duties at the opening to Prince Charles and Prince William, with Charles reading her speech and Charles and William jointly opening parliament. Her health had been in decline, and she cancelled a virtual meeting with senior ministers after being advised to rest by her doctors.

In a statement early Friday morning Australian time, Buckingham Palace confirmed: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon".  She was 96.

Australias Visit With The Queen

Her visits to Australia – from her first in 1954 through to her last in 2011 –offer a snapshot of the changing relationship Australians have had with their sovereign and with the monarchy.

The queen liked Australia and Australians. She came here 16 times throughout her reign and was, famously, on her way to our shores in 1953 when she learned her father had passed on and she was now queen.

The eight-week tour saw her visit 57 towns and cities across Australia, with her official duties including meeting 70,000 exservicemen and women at the MCG and opening parliaments across the country.

Among her more memorable moments were the grand opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973, closing the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in 1982, opening the Games in Melbourne in 2006 and her two trips to central Australia.

But there were controversies too, including when then Prime Minister Paul Keating guiding the Queen with his hand during her 1992 visit, led to accusations he had breached royal protocol and a UK newspaper headline labelling him the ‘Lizard of Oz’. But asked later if he was insulted by the episode, the then Prince Charles said: "No. Nor was the Queen".

The Queen's visits stalled during the late 1990s to avoid heated debate about the future of the monarchy.

The most notorious incident came in 1975 when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was dismissed from office by the Queen's representative.

A long legal fight to make public 220 Palace letters between then Governor-General Sir John Kerr and the Queen's private secretary prevailed in 2020 - showing she was not aware of, nor sanctioned, his actions.

Her next trip was timed well after the 1999 referendum on the republic, with its defeat partly attributed to the Queen's significance to so many Australians.

The Queen's final visit came in 2011, when she was 85. She received praise from then prime minister Julia Gillard, Australia's first woman in the job and also a staunch republican.

"In this, the home of Australian democracy, you are a vital constitutional part, not a guest, just as in this nation you can only ever be welcomed as a beloved and respected friend," Ms Gillard said.

While 2011 was the Queen's last visit here, she welcomed a number of Australian prime ministers during visits to London, including Scott Morrison and Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Morrison created headlines during a visit in June 2021 when he told the Queen she had been "quite the hit" at the earlier G7 conference in Cornwall.

Following her death, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "This time of mourning will pass but the deep respect and warm regard in which Australians always held Her Majesty will never fade"

During Queen Elizabeth's reign there were 15 Australian governorsgeneral and 16 prime ministers.

AS WE BOTH CELEBRATE THE LIFE, AND MOURN THE LOSS, OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II, LETS HAVE A LOOK AT HER TIME IN AUSTRALIA
Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

Paddington Bear And The Queen

The duo first ‘appeared’ together in a book in 1986 Paddington Bear, created by British children’s book author Michael Bond, first appeared in Bond’s 1958 book, A Bear Called Paddington. Then in 1986, Bond wrote the book, Paddington at the Palace in which Paddington Bear visits Buckingham Palace, where he crossed paths with the Queen. The pair don’t actually meet, though Paddington says he spotted Queen Elizabeth II in the window. Paddington made a ‘real-life’ visit to see the Queen in 2006 He once again visited Buckingham Palace in 2006, this time in ‘real life’ for a pantomime play called The Queen’s Handbag. It was held as part of the Children’s Party at the Palace, in honour of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebrations. Paddington and the Queen were seen again in a drawing created by a British artist

Earlier this year, the Queen’s friendship with Paddington was celebrated in an illustration by British artist Eleanor Tomlinson. The image, which is being shared by fans on social media following Her Majesty’s death, depicts the pair walking hand-in-hand alongside one of the queen’s beloved corgis.

Finally, they had tea and a very special sandwich – together for the final time – in June This was presented to the Queen for her approval, originally with an actress playing the Queens role. The Queen gave her permission, but only if she could star along side Paddington herself. Obviously, the request was well received and of course, granted.

In the clip, the duo is sitting down for some afternoon tea with the beloved animated bear. At one point, Paddington accidentally splattered some food on a butler’s face, before revealing he had a marmalade sandwich stashed away for safekeeping.

The Queen then did one better, unclasping her handbag on the table to reveal she had a sandwich of her own. The first

Wattle Painting

In late 1954 William Dargie, a well-known and respected Australian artist, travelled to London to paint a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait, which came to be known as the ‘wattle painting’, was commissioned to commemorate the visit. James Beveridge, owner of Melbourne-based printers McLaren and Co, commissioned the work because he wanted a portrait of the Queen ‘by an Australian artist for Australia’. Gifted to the Australian Commonwealth, it quickly became a popular and familiar image of the Queen. While Dargie was an accomplished and well-respected artist, he was still nervous about meeting, and painting, the Queen. Fortunately for Dargie,

artist to perform on stage for the Jubilee concert was Queen, with Adam Lambert singing as lead in place of the late Freddie Mercury.

As the music began, the Queen and Paddington tapped their cutlery in time with the music. What a pair.

he was put at ease and described the Queen as behaving ‘as naturally as if I were a friend who had called in for afternoon tea’. The Queen had agreed to wear the wattle gown, created by Norman Hartnell, which she had worn during her tour in Australia. To safeguard the painting, Dargie made a copy after turning the original work upside down so it would appear to him as a series of colours and forms. This is a well-known technique and reduces the temptation to try to improve on the original. Both paintings were sent back to Australia on separate aircraft. The original arrived safely in January 1955 and was presented to the Australian Government. As the copy was no longer required, Dargie gave the reproduction to his hostess in London, Lady Hamilton Fairley, later that year. It remained in her family’s possession until 2009 when it was purchased by the National Museum of Australia.

Writer of the sketch, Frank Cottrell-Boyce said, ‘when we asked the Queen to tea with Paddington, something magic happened – the most lovely goodbye’.

HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THEIR QUITE FRANKLY ADORABLE HISTORY TOGETHER:
Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE QUEEN you may not know.

mirror, lipstick, pen, mint lozenges and reading glasses. On Sundays, she added crisply ironed banknotes to the bag to hand out at church. Her Majesty uses her purse as a way to signal her staff. Apparently, if she places her bag on the table, it means that she wants to leave within five minutes. And, if she puts her bag on the floor, it shows she’s not enjoying the conversation and wants to be rescued.

ON THE PROPERTY

She became the Britain’s youngest homeowner at the age of just six – when the people of Wales gifted her a house (a Wendy house) in the grounds of Windsor’s Royal Lodge. It was called Y Bwthyn Bach, which means ‘The Little Cottage.’

After the war, she partied incognito on the streets of London When the second world war ended, on 8 May 1945, London’s streets were lined with people, all ecstatic at the news that the war was finally won. Wishing to celebrate alongside other Londoners, with her parents’ permission, Princess Elizabeth went out incognito and

joined the party on the city’s streets. At the time she noted the experience in her diary, writing: “Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly, Pall Mall, walked simply miles. Saw parents on balcony at 12.30am – ate, partied, bed 3am!”

SHE WAS A DAY DRINKER

A regular tippler, her majesty liked a gin with plenty of ice and a slice of fresh lemon before lunch, then “she will take wine with lunch and a dry martini and a glass of champagne in the evening”, her cousin, Margaret Rhodes, said. The Queen made no secret of enjoying life: “For me, heaven is likely to be a bit of a comedown.”

SHE HAD NO PASSPORT OR DRIVER’S LICENCE

Accomplished behind the wheel of her Jags and Range Rovers since joining the British women’s army as a truck driver and mechanic in 1945, the Queen was the only person in Britain who could drive without a licence or registration plates on her car. And because she issued British passports, QE2 didn’t need one, and instead confirmed her identity through basic questions such as her date of birth and address.

When given exotic animals, she rehoused them

During her reign, the Queen was given animals including an elephant, a jaguar, two tortoises and a pair of beavers. She donated them to the London Zoo, where she opened a Land of the Lions exhibit with Prince Philip in 2016.

SHE SPOKE FLUENT FRENCH

Educated at home in literature,

Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

language, history and music, the Queen learnt French as a girl from French and Belgian governesses. The monarch delivered an address at a 2014 state banquet en Francais and often used it “when speaking to ambassadors and heads of state from French-speaking countries, and when visiting French-speaking areas of Canada”, according to the official royal website.

SHE DEMOTED A FOOTMAN OVER A PRANK

When a footman spiked her corgis’ water with whisky in 1999 to amuse other palace staff, the Queen demoted him, according to reports.

A “fantastic” dog trainer, according to royal corgi trainer Dr Roger Mugford, the monarch had 30 corgis after being given her first, Susan, on her 18th birthday. She also became an accidental owner of dorgis – a corgi-daschund mix – after one of her dogs mated with Princess Margaret’s dachshund, Pippin. The Queen technically owned the UK’s swans and dolphins

In the 12th century, the Crown claimed ownership of all unmarked swans “swimming in open waters” in the UK because the birds were highly valued as a delicacy at banquets and feasts. The Queen – who also owned all the whales and dolphins (“fishes royal”) in the seas around the UK – didn’t go around claiming swans but celebrated an annual swan upping, where her official swan marker counted the swans in part of the River Thames. And she loved racing pigeons Racing pigeons has been a hobby of the royal family since 1886, according to the Royal Pigeon Racing Association. The Queen owned about 200 racing pigeons and was a patron of several societies.

PUTTING HER STAMP ON THINGS

The Queen took such delight in her stamp collection –worth more than $3.5 million, it was built on the collection of her father and previous monarchs and filled about 300 albums – that she would take it out and show it to visiting heads of state.

SOCCER HEAD

Elizabeth was an Arsenal fan, as revealed by former star Cesc Fabregas, who met the monarch when she invited the team for afternoon tea at the palace in 2006. The late Queen Mother was also a Gunners fan, as is Prince Harry.

SWEET TOOTH

A rich mint and chocolate ice cream bomb known as a bombe glacée royale was the Queen’s favourite dessert, according to her former chef Darren McGrady. She had a chocolate birthday cake every year, and every day, a whole cake was sent up to her for tea. She sometimes took a slice, then the cake went to staff for their afternoon tea.

A HEALTHY TREAT

She always carried a bag of carrots as a reward for her horses.

THE QUEEN’S FAVOURITE SONGS

A top-10 list in honour of her majesty’s 90th birthday in 2016 revealed she loved show tunes such as Howard Keel’s Oklahoma and Dolores Gray and Bill Johnson’s Anything You Can Do from Annie Get Your Gun.

HER STEAK ORDER

Not a fan of starchy foods, including potatoes and pasta, the Queen had a favourite dish called Gaelic steak, made from venison, mushrooms, flambeed Irish whiskey and cream. She had hers well done with a good sear.

THE HOTEL SHE HUNG OUT AT MOST

While the Queen very rarely dined out, she had a soft spot for Claridge’s Hotel. After the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, she hosted a gala dance at the hotel, where a simple supper of sausages, baked beans and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon was served. “Lilibet does things so well,” guest Nicky Haslam heard another say.

HER HACK FOR BREAKING IN SHOES

Being the same size as the Queen, her dresser and close friend, Angela Kelly, was roped in to break in the Queen’s handmade shoes from Anello

& Davide. Their bespoke styles were a royal favourite for more than 50 years.

TRUSTY JET LAG REMEDY

The most travelled monarch in UK history, the Queen relied on barley sugar sweets to help her blood sugar match the eating schedule of the destination.

HER LUGGAGE

For her 1947 honeymoon, the Queen bought a set of GlobeTrotter suitcases and never used anything other than those original bags, according to the company’s site. Her luggage tag was yellow with “The Queen” written on it. Each royal family member reportedly gets their own colour: the Duchess of Cambridge also has yellow, Prince William and Prince Charles use red, and Princess Anne goes green.

HER TRAVEL MUST-HAVES

When on tour, the Queen took her own toilet paper (sealed with stickers only she and Prince Philip were allowed to break), a personal supply of blood that matched her blood type and a defibrillator. Someone called the cops on her In 2017, an anonymous driver dobbed in the Queen for not wearing a seatbelt while travelling to Westminster with Prince Charles, according to the BBC. Under UK law, the Queen could not be subjected to civil or criminal proceedings. The West Yorkshire Police Contact Centre tweeted about the incident the next morning: “Let’s hope the Queen is behaving today.”

WEDDING-DAY DRAMA

On the day of the Queen’s wedding (she bought the material for her Norman Hartnell dress using World War II rationing coupons), a hairdresser was securing her veil with her chosen tiara when its metal frame snapped. The court jeweller was summoned to repair it after the Queen Mother told her daughter to stay calm: “We have two hours and there are other tiaras.”

UNUSUAL ALARM CLOCK

The Queen woke every day to a bagpiper playing outside her window for 15 minutes from 9am.

BRAND LOYAL

Crowned wearing Clarins make-up after commissioning the brand to create a lipstick that went with her coronation robes, the Queen used Clarins for the rest of her life. She was also a fan of Elizabeth Arden’s lipstick and Eight Hour Cream, and exclusively wore Essie’s pale pink Ballet Slippers nail polish after discovering it in 1989.

GRANDMA TO THE RESCUE

As the royals waved Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson off from their 1986 wedding, little Prince William darted after the newlyweds’ carriage. His grandmother broke into a run to chase a sailor-suited William and grab his hand before returning him to safety.

SHE ONLY RARELY HAD HOSPITAL STAYS

The Queen’s overnight stay at King Edward VII hospital for “preliminary investigations” in October last year was just the fourth of her reign. In 2018, she had cataract surgery. In 2003, she had knee surgery and two lesions removed from her face, and in 1982 she had a wisdom tooth removed. Her four children were home births, including the caesarean section delivery of Prince Charles in 1948, when the Buhl Room at Buckingham Palace was converted into an operating suite after the Queen laboured for 30 hours.

SHE DISTRACTED AN INTRUDER WITH A CIGGIE

When Michael Fagan broke into Buckingham Palace and confronted the Queen in bed in 1982, she ran from the room (wearing a Liberty print night dress) and sought help from a maid, Fagan said in a 2012 interview. While waiting for police to arrive, the pair ushered the uninvited guest into a nearby pantry and offered him a cigarette, according to Scotland Yard’s official report

CHICKEN PINEAPPLE SKEWERS & COCONUT PEANUT SAUCE

Yawn, chicken can get oh-so-boring. Add some pineapple and a coconut peanut sauce to add some flare!

• 2 cups teriyaki sauce

• 2 lbs. chicken breasts or tenders

• 1 can of Pineapple pieces

• Optional: sesame seeds for garnish Coconut Peanut Sauce:

• 1/2 can light coconut milk

• 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter

• 2 tablespoons brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon chili sauce

• 1 teaspoon soy sauce

• Gather your skewer ingredients and preheat your oven to 180c

• Begin by slicing your chicken lengthwise and crosswise into 5 cm chunks.

• Transfer your chicken to a bowl and add the teriyaki sauce. Let marinate for about 30 minutes.

• Meanwhile, drain your pineapple chunks and place in a bowl.

• Time to skewer the chicken and pineapple chunks! We alternated meat and pineapple, but you can create your own combo.

• Lightly grease a pan with rimmed sides and place the skewers inside. Bake for about 20 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink inside. You may need more or less time depending on the size of your chicken chunks.

Voila! You're done. We sprinkled our skewers with some sesame seeds for a little something extra but it's totally optional! Another fun extra is the Coconut Peanut Sauce. Just mix all of the ingredients together and you're done.

doggie DENTAL

Dental disease (especially periodontal disease) is the most common disease in our canine companions. It is also one of the most preventable and treatable diseases. Fortunately, we can reduce or even prevent dental disease by feeding a crunchy diet, appropriate chew treats and toys and daily tooth brushing. The following are steps to guide you on how to brush your dog’s teeth:

BEFORE BRUSHING

The first step is to start with a clean, healthy mouth. Good dental hygiene should start with a young pet with healthy new teeth and gums, or after your pet has had a professional dental cleaning. You will need a soft-bristled toothbrush and veterinary toothpaste. Human

toothpaste and baking soda may cause problems. Furthermore, veterinary toothpaste has flavours that are appealing to dogs. Anything other than a bristled toothbrush will not get below the gum line, which is the most important area to brush.

There are several important facts about our pets’ mouths that tell us when, where and how to brush. Periodontal disease usually affects the upper, and back teeth first and worst. Plaque builds up on the tooth surface daily, especially just under the gum line. It takes less than 36 hours for this plaque to become mineralized and harden into “tartar” (calculus) that cannot be removed with a brush. Because of this progression, brushing should be done daily, with a brush to remove the plaque from under the gum line.

Pick a time of day that will become a convenient part of your pet’s daily routine. Just before a walk or before a daily treat can help your pet look

MY DOG WON’T

LISTEN TO ME PART 1

For easy writing I’ll refer to puppies and dogs as puppy because this is where it all starts.

“It doesn’t matter how many times I tell my puppy not to do something they’ll go back another time and do it”.

“My puppy knows he’s done wrong or knows the word NO and yet to spite me he’ll go and do it again”. “My puppy won’t listen to me and some times when I yell at him, he barks at me”.

These are common issues that my clients have dis cussed with me. One of the most common feedbacks in my classes is people want

forward to brushing time. Take a few days to let both of you get used to the process. Follow with praise and a walk or treat each time.

B R USHING YOUR DOG’S TEETH

· Start by offering your dog a taste of the veterinary toothpaste.

The next time, let him taste the toothpaste, then run your finger along the gums of the upper teeth. Repeat the process with the toothbrush. Get the bristles of the brush along the gum line of the upper back teeth and angle slightly up, so the bristles get under the gum line.

Work from back to front, making small circles along the gum lines. It should take you less than 30 seconds to brush your pet’s teeth.

· Do not try to brush the entire mouth at first. If all that your pet lets you brush is the outside of the upper teeth, you are still addressing

the most important area of periodontal disease –prevention. If your pet eventually allows you to brush most of his teeth, so much the better.

Even with the best tooth brushing, some dogs may still need occasional professional cleaning, just like humans. By brushing your pet’s teeth daily and curtailing the amount of periodontal disease, you may reduce the frequency and involvement of dental cleanings and provide your pet with a healthier, sweeter smile.

their puppy to listen to them. But, how do you get your puppy to listen to you? The most important question is to ask yourself, is how to learn to listen to your puppy. By listening and understanding them, then they we will be in a better position to listen and understand us. I jokingly say in my classes for our puppies to understand English we need to understand Doglish!

In the next few issues I’ll cover these problems and by learning them we will have a stronger and happier relationship with our puppies. Happy training - Yvonne

AGE DOESN’T MATTER.

Some readers may know of Mary Berry the chef who is on TV in “The Great British Bake off” She recently announced that “Croquet saved my life “

After she fell and broke her hip she was struggling to get back to normal. Her doctor told her ‘You could sit in a chair all day and do no exercise and quite probably be dead in 4 years.’

She now claims to have a new lease of life after taking up the lawn sport. Croquet literally saved her life. But Age Doesn’t Matter. At Bribie Island Croquet Club the youngest member is 47 and the oldest is 91 . To play croquet you have to think “What is the best strategy here “which is good exercise for the brain. You

have to walk the length of the courts numerous times. You are out in the fresh air rather than stuck indoors. What could be better?

In the photograph you can see Kevin Reeves our oldest member and an exceptionally talented player and Gareth Vincent the new recruit learning from the older members. Why not come and give it a try?

It would be great if you could come to the Club Treats and Treasure Fund Raising Day on Saturday the 29th of October raising funds for Bribie Kids having a tough time. That way you can have a go at croquet and see if you like it .

Watch this space in the next issue for all the details. See you there!!

SOUL OF THE TREE

From our extensive collection of milled and carefully seasoned timber, the woodies members now examine each piece, looking for interesting grain, colour and shapes. A skilled eye can see in each piece what can be made from it, by way of incorporating it into furniture, turning, fashioning beautiful boxes, or burning it using Pyrography. Each species of tree displays a different personality. It is up to the craftsperson to craft, by whatever method, a finished piece that enhances that personality. In this way, the soul of the tree can live on.

In subsequent articles, we will look more closely at the various woodworking disciplines that produce the final products that can be seen at our Exhibition. This will be held in the last week of October, at the Matthew Flinders Art Gallery, Community Arts Centre, Banksia Beach.

Tacky

kitchens are all fun and games until you're the one who's staring down a ceramic chicken every morning while you wait for your coffee.  While there is no shortage of amazing kitchen styles and trends out there, there are even more that will make your home look like an interior design nightmare. From outrageous design themes to half-way remodels there are many mistakes to steer clear of.

They say the road to Hell is paved by good intentions, and the same could be said about a tacky kitchen. No one sets out to own the kitchen all their friends refer to as what not to do, it just happens. Don't worry though, that's why we're here! We've collected the tackiest trends we've seen in the kitchen to help innocent people steer clear of these kitchen blunders.

SHORT BACKSPLASHES

Nothing says, "I'm willing to settle for less." like halfway tiled backsplash! The backsplash is meant to protect your walls from ALL the messes that can happen in the kitchen, not just HALF of them. Don't render your backsplash useless by only installing half of it, you'll regret it when you're scrubbing tomato sauce off your wall.  Besides, short backsplash is totally tacky. No one thinks that looks good, so don't make this mistake.

Installing only half of your backsplash is literally cutting corners over only two or three more rows of tile, and in most people's opinion, that's just cheap. Ask any real estate professional and they'll say that kitchens and bathrooms are the most important part of any home.

FLUORESCENT LIGHTS

Nothing makes an already-tacky kitchen look worse than horrible lighting. That harsh glow and sterile feel of fluorescents make your warm and inviting home feel like the operating room at a morgue. Remember this, if you can find it in a morgue, it definitely doesn't belong in your home's kitchen. Fluorescent lighting isn't just ugly, it's also horrible for your eyes, so do yourself a favour and remove them as soon as you possibly can.

WHITE APPLIANCES

White appliances look great right out of the box. But give them a year and your shiny white appliances will go from pristine to stained and dingy. Those pearly white appliances have also become the calling card for an outdated and low-end kitchen, and nobody wants that! Just don't even think about replacing them with black appliances, because those are really just as bad. If you’re looking for a sign to replace your dingy appliances, this is it. It’s time for them to retire.

Not only do white appliances show every speck of dirt and grime, but they also are prone to stains and discoloration over time. So next time you're in the market for some new appliances spend a few extra bucks and go for the stainlesssteel set. There are even more cost-effective options these days! Just make sure they're a matching set because that’s just as tacky as the old white appliances.

TILED COUNTERS

One word: grout. That tile will look amazing until your grout suddenly turns the colour of sludge through normal kitchen wear and tear.  Also, how in the world do you get that grout cleaned, and cleaned well? You DON’T and that's exactly why tiled countertops are both tacky and completely gross. It’s just not a good look and we wouldn’t even recommend them to our worst enemies.  Besides being totally nasty, tiled countertops also make simple cooking tasks like rolling dough virtually impossible! Over time, those tiles will inevitably start to crack and separate leaving your countertops in shambles. Your friends and family will absolutely comment on the condition of your countertops because we guarantee theirs aren't coming apart at the seams like yours are. It will literally be the topic of the evening every time they come into your kitchen.

Recipe for Regeneration: Compost

Regenerate the soil and we regenerate our food. Compost is a key ingredient to improve our soils and the nutrition of the food we grow and consume. There are various methods for creating compost and household items can be reused to create a system that suits your needs.

From a worm tower made from a large bucket or a compost bay made from star pickets and pallets in your garden to a small compost tumbler or worm farm suitable for people with limited mobility or small spaces such as units or balconies, there is something for everyone.

Try composting organic materials at home. Items include:

• peelings and other fruit and vegetable scraps

• out of date food items

• leaf litter and pruning's (remove any with disease or pests)

• paper towels, shredded paper, egg cartons and cardboard (including cardboard bread tags)

• mulch

• cut flowers from a vase (remove wire and fastenings)

• coffee grounds and tea bags (avoid plastic mesh tea bags that are not made from paper)

• manure.

Avoid placing these in your home composting system:

• pet faeces if recently wormed OR using compost on food plants. Compost with these added are OK to use on natives, flowering, and decorative plants

• compostable packaging, toothbrushes or other items that requires commercial composting systems to biodegrade appropriately

• plastics and other non-organic materials

• oils and too much liquid.

Why do we need to reduce food waste?

We are wasting one third of the world’s food. Which means we also waste water, labour, energy, transport, packaging, and other resources in the food chain.

Australia wastes approximately 7.3 million tonnes of food per year, or one in five bags of groceries. Up to five percent of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions from landfill are caused food waste.

We can make a significant difference in reducing food wastage and composting unwanted organics, instead of disposing in the general waste bin.

struck so come along to The Orchid House at Bongaree to see the massed display of Orchid blooms and Foliage grown by members of Bribie Island Orchid Society and other regional societies at the forthcoming Bribie Island Orchid Society 35th Anniversary Spring Orchid and Foliage Show’. This Show is proudly sponsored by the Bribie Island Bowls Club, Bribie Island RSL, McKenzie Aged Care and Brown’s Mitre 10.

The Show runs from Friday 7th October to Saturday 8th October with the venue/s being The Orchid House and the Indoor Bowls Hall (Foliage), Entrance 3, 156A First Avenue, Bongaree. Entrance is $4 per person, with wheelchair friendly premises. In addition to lots of stunning blooms, there will be potting demonstrations and cultural supplies available. Our kitchen will open for Morning/ Afternoon Tea purchases.

Despite challenges Mother Nature has inflicted on the State over the last couple of years – drought, flooding rains, and lately unseasonably cold

weather, the Society is hopeful of presenting many different types of quality blooms and foliage to the public, with budding orchid/foliage growers, and seasoned growers able to purchase plants from vendors from Tamborine, Woombye and elsewhere who set up at the Show, along with members and local growers. Beware –Orchids are addictive! What starts out as that gift of a pot of pretty flowers can easily turn into many shelters with dozens or hundreds of orchids.

Secretary, Teresa Watson indicated that the major raffle prize will be drawn towards the end of the Show. The only way people can get a raffle ticket is for them to come along to the Show.

Bribie Island Orchid Society Inc. founded some thirty-five years ago, currently has around 80 enthusiastic members from all walks of life, some beginners with just a few plants, through to those more experienced with large collections. President Diann Sirett is confident this Spring Show will be bigger and better and those attending will not be disappointed.

The society welcomes new members, as well as visitors. Our New Growers Group, teaching the basics of orchid growing, is very popular. For more information, log onto our website www.

Welcome back to Spring everyone.

Wonderful to see the return of so many bees and flowers, including lavenders, orange crossandras, and multiple-coloured kangaroo paws, cosmos, paper daisies, petunias, and of course so many more.

Remember as the temperatures rise, it's a good time to add some mulch to help retain moisture, help keep weeds from spreading too fast, and to add nutrition to your garden soil when it breaks down.

Choosing the right mulch can be important, so here's a few tips, starting with compost.

If you have kitchen waste/ compost, that's a wonderful start, otherwise other composts (e.g. mushroom), and organic fertilisers specific to your plants are great too.

Lucerne and pea straw are often the best mulch choices. They're both rich in nitrogen which is great for most plants, particularly for fruit and vegetable gardens. Two signs of nitrogen deficiency include yellowing leaves and the presence of clover.

Sugarcane mulch is less rich in nutrients but is a great soil improver, so use with additional fertiliser. The light colour of all these straw mulches reflect sunlight and keep the soil cooler, compared with weedmat or plastic which can raise the soil temperature.

Grass clippings are rich in nitrogen too, but keep an eye out for any grass seeds trying to germinate in your garden. It's also good to mow occasionally with the catcher off because, in moderation the clippings are very good fertiliser for your lawn too.

More established shrubs and trees prefer bark and woodchip mulches, but it's fine to put straw down first. Likewise it's fine to put these woody mulches on top of straw, just keeping in mind that they do absorb a little more heat than straw, so keep up the watering during hotter spells.

Living mulches are another great idea. In other wordsground cover plants. Dichondra (pictured here around pavers, also known as Tom Thumb lawn) is a good example. There's the standard green

variety or the even hardier Silver Falls, named for its colour.

They are both quite beautiful trailing around rocks or in a hanging basket (Silver Falls are pictured here), and both can handle light foot traffic.

Which reminds me of a wonderful idea, a customer told me recently (thanks Diane).

Peppermint in a contained garden (because it loves to spread) is delightful to walk on, releasing its aroma as you go, and can be picked to pop in a jug of iced water. Yum!

Creeping thyme has a nice aroma too, but best not to walk on it. Same goes for various chamomiles and oregano, among others. Ask our friendly local market and nursery people who have lots of information to share.

Thanks for reading folks, happy gardening, and I'll see you again in issue 177 on 21st October where we're going to look into the wonders of bees, including having your own native bees in the garden.

BIEPA TREE PLANTING EVENT

9AM ON SAT 8TH OCT 9AM ERNEST SENDALL PARK, KANGAROO AVENUE, BONGAREE

As part of the Queen’s Jubilee Planting Scheme, BIEPA has received a grant to plant 50 trees. The grant specifies shade trees so the trees will be well established.

BIEPA would like this to be a community event so that families can watch these trees grow. As each tree grows, it will attract native fauna to the area.

Each tree will require a twoperson lift so we invite ablebodied people to help plant these trees on Saturday, 8th October. Volunteers will need to sign in as they do for bushcare events so that health and safety regulations are adhered to.

We will begin the day with an

Acknowledgement of Country and a briefing of the morning’s planting process.

PLEASE REGISTER at www.biepa online/events to participate in this community event. Registration will ensure that you get reminders and notifications of any changes by email.

On the day, wear sun safe clothing (long sleeves and long pants). Do bring a hat, gloves and a water bottle.

We hope participants will stay for a congratulatory morning tea to admire our work. We look forward to hosting this event and making it a fun and productive morning.

Thank you in anticipation, Glenda Charles & Mark Stanton-Cook BIEPA and the Jubilee Native Tree and Plant Greening Project

Hello anglers, Fishing from our surrounds has been good. Great catches of Flathead and Tailor have been recorded.

2023, which currently allows recreational fishers to take twice the in-possession limit for charter trips longer than 48 hours.

• Developing a new smartphone app for recreational fishers to voluntarily report their Spanish mackerel catches on the east coast and shark depredation; and

• Introducing a new education and awareness program promoting best practice catch, release and handling techniques for recreational fishers.

Flathead from the Bribie Bridge are on fire,

1st July 2023.

The Bongaree Jetty has had catches of School Mackerel, good size Jew fish, Bream and Grassy Sweetlips.

New Fishing Rules for Spanish mackerel fishery, commencing

• Changing the recreational in-possession limit to one fish per person, or two fish per boat with two or more recreational fishers on board from 1 July 2023. (The boat limit does not apply to licensed charter fishing trips.)

• Removing the extended charter trip limit from 1 July

Jason Barnes (see pics RHS) is Bribie’s plastic man; his catches are legendary.

I hope families that come to Bribie for holidays have a wonderful time, I saw a lot of them Friday and Saturday, thanks for your patronage.

Dear Editor,

It appears that nobody has yet held MBSC to account in providing crossings dedicated to wildlife and thus discriminating against domestic animals – or even humans, come to that (although some of us could be classified as a bit wild, maybe.)

Never having seen the crossings ever being used by those privileged beings, I doubt that domestic animals

will either, as they have the same problem – they, also, can’t read so, fortunately, they are not likely to be offended – Not sure about the humans, though. Ruggles

Dear Editor, Whatever has happened to prepositions? I had to learn to put “from” after “different”, but now everyone uses “to” or “than”. Americans love to follow

“meet” with “with" and “off” with “of”. But I was quite surprised to find a dropped preposition in your recent issue. Since when did we go “shopping vegetables”? What happened to the “for”? Cheers, Hazel

Dear Editor, Thank you, H Beneke, for reminding us that water vapour is a greenhouse gas just like Carbon Dioxide, CO2 (Tansey 1859). Those of us who have spent winters in the high country, for example Armidale or Canberra, don’t need a 19th century Irish Physicist to tell us that water vapour is a very efficient greenhouse gas. In July, when the night sky is clear the temperature drops well below zero. A couple of days later, when some clouds roll in, the minimum temperature is often 10 degrees higher. The water vapour is acting as a blanket trapping in the Earth’s heat. Since the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is about 400 ppm, ie 0.04% and water covers over 70% of the entire surface of the planet then it’s not difficult to fathom which would have the greatest effect. (CO2, really?)

It would appear that the concentration of CO2 and global temperatures over the last 200 years are indeed correlated. This doesn’t necessarily mean that increasing levels of CO2 cause increases in global temperatures. Ian Plimer makes a strong case that it is increases in global temperature, from whatever cause, that gives rise to increases in atmospheric CO2. Just the opposite of what Al Gore proposed and which all the

Climate Change adherents believe. Next time you fill your champagne glass to celebrate the election of another progressive to one of our parliaments, note that the CO2 gas bubbles out as the liquid warms to room temperature. Unlike many gases CO2 is less soluble in warm water than in cold water. Oceans absorb CO2 emitted by volcanoes, both on the surface of the Earth and under water and then give off CO2 when the oceans warm. CO2 in the atmosphere is a result of global warming rather than the cause.

Enough is enough with E. Scooters.

They really are a danger to our community of elder citizens.

There is one smart rider who everyday speeds out of Boronia Drive turning left into Verdoni Street

Always around 2.50pm. He would be in his late 30's early 40's.

Obviously on the way to pick a child up from the primary school. First time I encounter him

I nearly had an accident with him not giving way. Oh! and no helmet!!! Since then, I often see him on his way to collect his child. Sometimes with a helmet, and a stubby, or on his phone. Very smart.

Last Thursday the 15th one was driving on the path outside of Woolworths shopping Centre. Weaving in, and out between shoppers. (Oh! he was wearing a helmet). I could not believe it.

Today Sunday the18th A child probably no older than 12-14 years wearing a light greenish hoodie was riding an old whitish unregistered real petrol fuel scooter. No muffler taunting shoppers, in Hornsy parade, and playing chicken with

motorists. That’s not good!!!

1.  If they drive into an innocent pedestrian how is that person able to be compensated. After all they are not a registered vehicle. Have no insurance. What then?

2.   I see many using phones. Are they above the law?

3.  They have no age restriction, and no licence...???

Surely the law should apply to them the same as any other vehicle.

A concerned resident .

Hello Ed,

Over the last 75 years I have been fortunate enough to enjoy a privileged life, I have lived a comfortable existence in the fact that I have had a regular income, a roof over my head, have travelled the world, I have been able to switch lights on whenever I needed light, turned on a fire when I needed heat, enjoyed meals cooked on electric or gas cookers, quenched my thirst with a turn of the tap and used the bathroom at will, in fact most of those in this country, Europe, America and parts of Asia have also enjoyed this privilege. It is also therefore interesting that this is the very segment of the world’s population that is calling for changes to how we enjoy our lifestyle at a time when the majority of the world’s population struggles to survive without any of the afore mentioned luxuries. China and India are countries that between them house half of the world’s population and would have little likelihood in the foreseeable future of supplying the power needed to improve the lives of the masses without the use of coal driven power stations as this still remains the cheapest form of producing the power that has powered

the developed world for the last 150 years.

The fact is the haves are quite happy to deny the have nots any form of improving their lives, take for instance the destroying of the Amazon rain forest to convert the area into farmland, the world holds their hands up in horror forgetting conveniently that our lifestyle was funded several hundred years ago by chopping down the forests both here in Australia and throughout Europe and converting the land to farming.

The argument on climate change seems as divisive as religion or politics and both sides are convinced, they are correct. The Greens are demanding closure of coal mines which will reduce the income Australia receives in the form of royalties and employs many thousands of workers and have given no short term solution to solving this issue, in fact Adam Bandt will take this country back to the horse and cart days if he were to get his way, the fact he won’t address the Australian flag shows the nature of this individual and some of his cohorts.

My thoughts that no matter what action we take on climate change it will have little or no effect on the current climate situation whilst the population continues to advance towards 10 billion and above and this is where action needs to be taken, this is unlikely as self interest groups such as religious groups would see their hold on society diminish. We will just have to be more inventive in how we adapt to the changes in climate in the future and move forward with our lives.

MY POLICE CAREER1974 to 2006

Part 5....

The next day was tear gas training. What happened here was an instructor and a squad of probationary Police had gas masks on inside an old building a tear gas bomb was set off and at a given signal we all had to remove our masks and give it to the instructor and walk outside. If any person ran out or ran to or from the instructor then they would fail this section of training. Once outside the tip would be to face the wind and let the tears flush the effects of the gas away. If you rubbed your eyes then it would make the effects more apparent as the particles of the chemical would be rubbed further into the eyes.

Our new Instructor for out final training stage was Inspector Richards - what a gentleman he was too!

This segment of our training involved arrest and charging procedures and giving court evidence.

We all used to arrest each other and lead our prisoners off to another building. It was emphasised by our Inspector that arresting Police had to actually hold the prisoner's arm in a recognised and taught 'come along' hold as some prisoners were told to run away if the opportunity presented itself! It would not be the first time in my long career I have seen prisoners run away into the night after having been arrested and in the process of being led to the police car just because the arresting office adopted a nonchalant attitude to keeping physical hold of the prisoner!

When it was Wiffin's turn to be arrested and taken to the Station for charging

the Sergeant listed all of his property as usual - including some presents from us like packets of condoms etc! We had to present the cases before a mock courtInspector Richards was the Magistrate. I remember Dave the re-joiner being so eager to give his evidence in front of a packed court. He was going to show us how it should be done as he had done so many times previously when in the job. He rushed up to the Witness box clutching his ARB (Arrest Report Book) and with a superior grin on his face, stepped into the witness box, missed his footing on the first step, tripped and fell into the box with a lot of banging and ended up inside the box completely hidden from view! We all roared with laughter and even Inspector Richards couldn't resist a

chuckle. When Dave poked his head up from the Witness box a few seconds later we were still laughing and falling about. I remember one of our recruits was on the floor clutching his stomach through laughing so much. This carried on a little while with Dave smiling weakly still wanting to save the situation from becoming a complete Brian Rix farce. He started his evidence but it was no good, a titter would start from the audience and then it was on again. Inspector Richards started to laugh and with eyes watering and trying to compose himself and act the part of a serious Magistrate. The rest of our squad gave evidence but Dave's act was really a hard act to follow and the day ended uneventfully.
