MORE MONEY FOR HOSPITALS NOT BANKS I will fight Malcolm Turnbull’s $2.9 million cuts to Caboolture hospital Hi I’m Labor’s Susan Lamb, Labor’s candidate for Longman. I was born in Mackay, I live locally and I spent 30 years living in Dakabin raising my four boys and working as a teacher aide. I will fight the LNP’s decision to cut $2.9 million from the Caboolture hospital.

– Susan Lamb

The LNP had to come kicking and screaming to give the banks a royal commission. Even now they are still going to give $17 billion to the banks. The LNP chooses the big banks. I choose the Caboolture hospital.

THE BRIBIE ISLANDER | thebribieislander.com.au

By Neil Wilson

A small group of invited guests attended a ceremony at the Bribie Island Fire Station recently to mark the official handover of a new appliance by Fire and Emergency Services Minister, Craig Crawford. As well as senior QFES personnel, the guests included representatives from Queensland Ambulance, National Parks and Wildlife, Queensland Police and Bribie Station officers and crews. On handing over the keys for the shiny appliance which is fitted with state of the art equipment, Mr Crawford told those present that this was the third appliance to be handed over on that day alone. He said that the Palaszczuk government and QFES is delivering on it’s commitment to community safety which will mean that vital frontline firefighters and volunteers have access to the most up-to-date equipment. ‘This vehicle will allow firefighters to have immediate access to new breathing apparatus and HAZMAT equipment as well as improved level road

crash rescue capability,’ Mr Crawford explained. ‘We know that in an emergency, every minute counts, which is why this new vehicle has the capability of technical rescue along with command and control. The appliance has onboard water and foam supplies which means that it can deliver water and safe A Class foam at emergencies,’ he added.

Mr Crawford also said that the new vehicle was also fitted with Compressed Air Foam that can be propelled further than water and will stick to surfaces, suppressing oxygen, fuel and heat in order to deal with especially difficult situations. Following the handing over of the vehicle keys to Station Officer Wayne Brown, QFES Chaplain Major Lyn Cook performed the blessing of the appliance and all who are called to operate it. Guests then enjoyed a selection of tasty snacks which were provided by ladies from the Lions Club of Bribie Island. Whilst I’m sure that most of us are aware of just how dedicated and caring QFES members are, anyone who was at Waterfront Place in Brisbane on Sunday, June 10 would have witnessed a first-hand example of their commitment when QFES

THE WEATHER DIDN’T MATTER Left: Division One Councillor Brooke Savige(L), Simone Wilson MP and BIDCA’s Gary Parsons with the male, female and junior 10km winners do not know what we would have done without your assistance,’ she added.

By Neil Wilson After talking to the event organisers, I think that they were overwhelmed by the number of competitors and supporters who turned up for the Diabetes Dash and Walk with Us which was held on the waterfront recently. Bribie Island Diabetes Support Group Vice-President Jan Donaldson told me that the event was such a wonderful success despite the cool and at times rainy weather

and the combination of registrations, donations and raffle proceeds resulted in a total of more than $2,500 being raised on the day. ‘I would like to say thank you to all who helped to make the day such a great success,’ said Jan. ‘Thank you to all the participants for making the effort to do the run or walk and to all those who were there to cheer them on. To the Diabetes Support Group President, Les Orman, we

Jan also pointed out that without the local community groups and businesses, the day would not have been anywhere near as good. There were many sponsors for the event and they included SPORTF1RST, Victory Press, Bribie RSL and the Jadin Pharmacy Group as well as Moreton Bay Regional Council, Division One Councillor Brooke Savige, Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP and Phil Hungerford who provided the time clock and other essential items for the run. The members of BIDCA were there to keep the hunger at bay with their sausage sizzle

and the Bribie Island Road Runners and Walkers Club joined in as well. I believe that they will now regard the annual event as a part of their calendar. Among those who attended were Simone Wilson MP who cheered everyone on as they crossed the finish line and Division One Councillor Brooke Savige who, along

He’s not Heavy - He’s My Brother. Blake rode his bike so Dylan could take part in the 5km walk with her family, did the fivekilometre walk all the way to the finish. Vice-President Jan remarked on how exciting it was to see so many of the children who live with diabetes taking part in the five-kilometre walk alongside many of the adult members. ‘They are wonderful examples to all of us,’ she said. From any event there is always one or more especially notable stories which emerge and, whilst all who took the time to attend and compete should be congratulated, the

Simone Wilson MP and BIDCA’s Gary Parsons (R) with the winners of the 10km event attendance of two young boys, Blake and Dylan, is deserving of special mention. Early in the day, some people had made comments about seeing two boys who were there on a bike, asking if they were a part of the event and apparently it was not until later when everyone realised that it was brothers Blake and Dylan. Two years ago, Dylan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and since then, Blake has taken on the

big brother role perfectly and his bike is the trademark. Blake has been using his bike to raise funds for the support group, offering rides in exchange for donations in order to help his family “pay it forward” and he understands how much his brother’s life changed after being diagnosed. In order for Dylan to take part in the walk, Blake rode his bike while Dylan sat in the back. Dylan’s family have been continuous supporters of the group for over twelve months after funding by both the Diabetes Support Group and the Wallum Action Group enabled Dylan to receive his insulin pump. As well as supporting group events, the family has also been raising awareness of diabetes within the community and highlighting sponsorship programs such as Kids to Camp, insulin pumps, medical devices and adult education. With the Diabetes Dash and Walk with Us day being

WHAT’S THE VIBE IN KIDS ALLEY

By Neil Wilson

Already renowned as somewhere to go for a great Sunday morning outing and to select from the great range of handcrafted items that are always for sale, the monthly Bribie Vibe Markets have increased the range of entertainment that is available by introducing “Kid’s Alley,” and Vibe Market co-ordinator Kelly Vass has told me that the Alley is a place where both kids and their parents can find a lot of fun activities. ‘The alley is located around the Gem Club and as well as the Animal Farm and gem fossicking, there is face painting, children’s clothing

and other hand-made items such as bears and Raggedy Ann dolls along with tie-dyed t-shirts and wooden toys,’ said Kelly. Held on the last Sunday of each month, the Vibe Market always has a large selection of stalls and activities and as well as handcrafted items, marketgoers can choose from a variety of fresh produce. The Gem Club and the Woodcrafters always have their work on display and available for sale. The June market will feature entertainment by local guitarist Tom Kimmet who will be playing music from the 1950’s through to the

HI S TORY P RES ERV ED AT CABOOLTURE AIRFIELD By Neil Wilson

After countless hours of toil and research along with total dedication, Andrew Carter, Nathalie Gochel and the volunteers at The Australian Vintage Aviation Society (TAVAS) witnessed their dream become a reality on June 2nd when Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP declared the TAVAS Museum officially open during a ceremony which was attended by a selection of Society members and other invited guests.

who has worked tirelessly to bring the selection of aircraft to the required condition and also paid tribute to the enormous amount of time that Nathalie has spent on research, especially uncovering the history of the Australian air aces whose stories are featured along the front wall of the museum. He pointed out that very special thanks is owed to Jack McDonald who owns the hangar in which the museum is housed.

In welcoming those present, Andrew who, along with Nathalie founded TAVAS in January 2012, talked about the commitment of volunteers such as engineer Dave Walsh

Following the cutting of the ribbon by Ms Wilson, all present made their way through the door to what I can best describe as a simply outstanding array of exhibits. Along both of the side walls are placards

Suspended from the museum ceiling are replicas of aircraft from the beginning of the twentieth century including the No. 21 Condor which was the aircraft that was piloted by Gustav Whitehead in August 1901 and now recognised as the first successful attempt at achieving sustained powered flight, replacing the belief that the Wright Brothers’ attempt in 1904 was the first. Suspended near the Condor is the 1933 Mignet HM.14 Flying Flea On the floor of the museum, visitors are able to take a close look at replicas of several aircraft which were used by both the German and Allied pilots during World War 1 including of course the red Fokker Tri-plane made famous by Manfred von Richtofen (The Red Baron) and the Sopwith Tri-plane.

Whilst most people are aware that there were Australian pilots involved in WW1, very few would know just how many and would be amazed at the number of aces whose stories adorn the tribute wall at the front of the museum. The brave pilot’s who are featured include Frank Alberry who became a pilot after he lost a leg during the early part of that war whilst fighting with the British Expeditionary Force in France and also Patrick

The wings were strengthened in order to carry bombs,’ he explained. By way of explanation about the decision to produce the Wirraway, this happened after the Australian Government realised that, due to the need

An investigation into various European and American designs resulted in the purchase of the North American NA-16 and a development process that resulted in a modified variant called the Wirraway receiving official approval. The aircraft was designated as being intended for a training/ general purpose role and was fitted with a 600 horsepower radial engine. In June of 1938, the Australian Government placed an initial order for forty Wirraways and on March 27th in 1939, the first CA-1 Wirraway, RAAF serial A20-3, performed it’s maiden flight. Whilst tis aircraft was retained at the factory for testing and evaluation, on July 10th of that year, the first two Wirraways, serials A20-4 and

in 1959 when CA-16 A20-86 was flown to Tocumwal for disposal. Speaking about the history of 695, Ross told me that the aircraft was delivered to the RAAF in February 1945 and from when World War II ended was flown less and less until being sold in the mid fifties. He said that

a number of the type were converted to be used for crop dusting and re-named “Ceres” but that was not the case with the aircraft that shares space in his hangar with the T-28 Trojan. ‘695 did the rounds of a number of owners until a syndicate, mainly of Cathay Pacific pilots, was formed in 1993 with the intention to obtain and restore a Wirraway and a Mustang,’ said Ross. ‘The aircraft was brought to Caboolture where the restoration began and from when she flew again in July 1997, Wirraway 695 has been continually operational,’ he said. Something that indicates just how very important it is to have this aircraft operating at Caboolture is the very limited existence of the type in the country. Ross remarked that there are now only three airworthy Wirraways left flying in all of Australia and 695 is the only one in Queensland. As I’m sure most Bribie Island residents would be aware, this aircraft is a very familiar sight in the skies over our island and as well as bringing many Adventure Flight passengers for a look at Pumicestone Passage and the beautiful surf beach, the Wirraway has participated in the Bribie Island Anzac Day flyover for each of the past twenty years. Ross recalled that although he has not

early stages, everyone wanted him to be the singer when all he wanted to do was play. (Must be tough having such a good voice Col.)

Col Shields, a passionate guitarist As an indication of both his versatility as a musician and also his determination, our entertainer for this edition started his professional music career as a vocalist despite having a burning desire to be accepted in a band as a guitarist. He told me that in the

Longtime Locals Only band member Col Shields grew up in Brisbane and developed a love of music through his mother who was an accomplished singer and of course, had a guitar which Col began playing when still a boy. He broke into the local music scene as a singer at the then very popular TC’s Sound lounge, a sixties music venue in Elizabeth Street. At the ripe old age of seventeen, Col replaced George Marshall, who by the way has previously featured in this segment, as a member of The Diamonds who had a similar sound to the Shadows. This, however, was not to be the case for long and, due to

Col’s first gig was as a singer at TC’s his personal passion for the genre, Col turned them into a blues band. Understandably, every band dreams of having a regular gig and for The Diamonds, this was as the resident band at the Pearl Hotel in Caloundra. Col told me that they became quite friendly with one of the local constabulary. ‘When we finished our show at the Pearl, we would spend the night sleeping on the beach after a few drinks,’ said Col. ‘One night, the copper came down and had a few drinks with us and he got so drunk that we had to drive him home in his police car. Not long after that we became victim of a very antiquated law which prevented anyone under twenty one from being in the lounge and as I was the only one who was, the rest of the band used to get fined every time because we had to go through the lounge to get to where we were playing. The pub had to pay the fines,’ he explained. With this situation beginning to get out of hand, a bit of anonymity was called for and so this brought about a change of name to “Three of a Kind.” Around that time, bands were all eager to compete in a competition that was big in the late sixties and known as Hoadley’s National Battle of the Sounds. The competition was run at a state and then a national level and it was while paying as “Three of a Kind,” the ex-Diamonds members progressed all the way through to fourth in the Queensland

Col made sure that he could find his mug section. From “Three of a Kind,” Col played with a variety of other pub bands including Atmosphere and the Cruisin’ Fairlanes as well as the 50’s and 60’s rock band, Stepback. Moving to Bribie Island about eleven years ago, Col spent a short time with the country band, Janice and the Jamdrops until he came to the decision that that genre was not really his cup of tea. He had also become friendly with another keen musician, Alby Lincoln and when Alby founded the Locals Only afternoons at the Blue Pacific Hotel Col found his place in the Bribie music scene and is still a regular to this day. Apparently, he received the Locals Only “Stork Award” in both 2014 and 2016 for being the one who always delivers. Entertainers such as Col Shields must be acclaimed as a large part of the reason that Locals Only has maintained its popularity with both locals and visitors for over ten years.

OPA!

Celebrating all things Greek

According to a Greek friend of mine, Opa is an untranslatable Greek word that has many meanings. It may be used as an ‘Exclamation’, or ‘Utterance’, or ‘Declaration’, or ‘Affirmation’. It is a way of saying “don’t worry” … no matter what has happened you are still alive, … “don’t be harsh on yourself,” there’s another minute and another day ahead of you to right what’s wrong, … and we are here together to make sure of this. …( So, as an example when someone accidentally drops and breaks something, no matter how valuable, we yell: Oooooopa !!! … kind of “It’s ok,” … everything can be mended if your mind is healthy and still open to music, dance, mezedes, and wine !!)

And in that spirit, everyone is invited to kick up their heels at the Bribie OPA! 2018 Greek Festival on Sunday, July 1. The event is held at Third Avenue Woorim and runs from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and entry is by a gold coin donation. According to event organisers, there is something for everyone. Experience traditional handmade Greek cuisine, Indulge in mouthwatering freshly made Greek sweets. Kick your heels to the live Greek music, including Zorba, played by Greek band ‘Melodia’. Watch authentic traditional Greek dancing from different regions of Greece Swing your hips to the sounds of ‘Elvis Parsley’. Try wine

samples from KOMINOS Wines. Watch Greek Cooking demonstrations. Enjoy Greek coffee and traditional sweets in our ‘Kafenea’ (traditional coffee houses) Bribie is a sand island, so organisers will also be creating a unique sand sculpture during the event You can treat your kids to the children’s fun zone. The organisers have put on free shuttle buses every half hour from 11 am till 5 pm from the Park’n’Ride behind Woolworths, cnr Victory Rd &

TIME TO CRUISE By Neil Wilson

Following what has been a long period of ticket sales in a Dragons Abreast Bribie Island raffle I had the pleasure of drawing the winner from the bulging bag of tickets recently and, if Derek Adams hadn’t been thinking about taking a cruise, he can now. As the winner, Derek can now plan a cruise to the value of $3,000 with raffle sponsors, italk travel Bribie Island. The draw took place at one of the Dragons Abreast Saturday morning “post paddle” gatherings which

involve the club members and a few supporters sharing morning tea outside the Kal-Ma-Kuta Drive take-away. Club President Leonie Dyer told me that the raffle prize is due to the generosity of Dragons Abreast member Ros Layton from italk travel who have supplied the cruise at cost which means that profits from the raffle can be put toward the expenses associated with running the club. I have to make the comment that I have never seen a bag so full of raffle tickets and my

arm disappeared up to my shoulder as I went right to the bottom when I made the draw. I took careful hold of just one ticket and removed it from the bag, handing it to Ros Layton who announced the name of the winner. In one of those eerie twists of fate, Derek’s mum Roslyn Adams was seated right there beside us and so she claimed the ticket for her son while very much in a state of disbelief. (I’m not saying that it’s true, but I did hear that Roslyn might have actually bought the ticket.) Dragons Abreast Bribie Island can often be seen out in their boats on the waters of Pumicestone Passage and, even in the cold of Winter, these ladies, all who have experienced the trauma of breast cancer, assemble before daybreak to go paddling. I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW By Neil Wilson

THERE ARE WAYS In case some of you hadn’t noticed, (only joking,) the cost of electricity has continued to rise over the last decade and from time to time power company executives along with government spokespersons have offered a number of reasons why. Local environmentalist and retired engineer John Oxenford took the time recently to explain about what he believes is the reason and also give me some tips on how to reduce electricity costs by following a few quite simple rules.

John began by saying that, no matter how often the idea of reducing the cost of power to the consumer is addressed, the reality is that it will never happen. Whilst the reasons why are too technical to discuss at any length, analysing the various methods of electricity production will provide enough evidence to prove that the only movement in prices will be upward. As for the reasons why, John pointed out that they are mostly the result of a mid-2000’s projection which was proven to be wrong. ‘There was a belief that with the increase in the population, electricity usage would rise dramatically, so in order to cope with the extra demand, millions of dollars were spent on upgrading the transmission systems,’ said John. ‘The expected increase in demand never occurred and in fact, usage dropped which means that, because all the upgrades have to be paid for, the only way to achieve that

will be by increasing the price to the consumer,’ he told me.

So, with the knowledge that our power costs will not be falling any time soon, we need to examine the various ways in which we can conserve power and after what I imagine has been an extensive examination of the statistics, John has suggested the following steps. Firstly, the ways that we cool or heat our homes can certainly have an effect on our power usage and John advises that, whilst there are many options available, the important rules when selecting products for

this purpose include being aware of exactly how much space will need to be heated/ cooled and to ensure that the product is energy efficient. Also, when using the product, we should be aware that glass has very minimal insulating qualities so windows should always be curtained and any cracks in doors or windows should be sealed. There is an increasing number of homeowners who have converted, either in part or totally to solar power and this warrants the devotion of a few sentences to the subject. When a house is equipped

with sufficient solar panels to produce enough energy for the whole building, there are two options regarding times of use that will be determined by the rebate that applies. If the excess power is sold back to the grid at a premium rate, it is best to use minimal power during the daylight hours and so maximising the power export but if the rebate is only minimal, all major use of power is best to occur during the day and then exporting power to the grid at night. For those who are having a new house built, the installation of solar energy is definitely advisable. Some householders only take advantage of solar

energy for water heating and, if the installer has done the job in the correct manner, this can certainly result in a considerable reduction in power usage. No matter whether your water is heated by solar or electricity from the grid, it is also essential to consider how much water is needed at any given time and install the correct sized reservoir. Regarding temperature settings, water must be heated at sixty degrees or more to prevent the risk of Legionnaire’s Disease and it is essential to have a temperate valve installed to limit temperature at

the tap to fifty degrees, even less if there are children under two years of age. Although only accounting for a small part of power usage, lighting systems are still an area that can be assessed for ways to decrease usage and, along with the advent of LED lighting which uses minimal power, fitting the new T-5 fluorescent tubes can also produce a saving. Time now to consider the numerous appliances that are used throughout the house, especially in the kitchen and number one on that list is, of course, the refrigerator. (Has anyone ever wondered why there is a D in fridge but not in refrigerator.) There are many styles and sizes of fridge on the market, some much more efficient than others, and John pointed out that one of the most efficient designs are the models with the freezer at the bottom and draws which therefore prevent the cold air from falling out. Factors to be considered when placing a fridge in the most appropriate position include keeping the unit well away from appliances which produce heat such as an oven or microwave and ensuring that there is ample space to the sides and rear for sufficient ventilation. A fact to be aware of is that old fridges use massive amounts of power in comparison to the new units so the best option is to dispose of them. However, if the decision is made to keep the old one as a “beer fridge” out in the shed, it is wise to only turn it on when really needed. When choosing appliances,

Choosing the right television is possibly more about what

21

is right for the individual room or situation but it is always advisable to select a unit which uses no more than two hundred watts each hour. Obviously, reducing power usage and therefore cost is to a large degree dependent on lifestyle choices but certain points should always be kept in mind. When choosing an electrical product, take into consideration the efficiency rating and current draw, preferably selecting a product with better than a three-star rating. Devices that are left on standby are still drawing a certain amount of power so turning them off at the wall is advisable, QFES statistics have revealed that TV’s left on standby are a common cause of house fires.

L OCAL L ADS

In conclusion, the numbers in the total column of your power bill are usually always an unwelcome shock to the system and bank balance but just how big that shock is will largely depend on your efforts to conserve our usage.

it is essential to consider a number of factors, for instance, someone who has had a hip replacement should probably choose a wall oven as opposed to a drop in stove and frequency of use should be determined. For those times when food only needs to be heated up, the most efficient method is to use the microwave. Washing machines, as an appliance which can be responsible for varying parts of the power usage, can certainly be operated efficiently. The best option is to only ever use cold water new age detergent products are designed to disperse in water at any temperature and the difference in costs is quite astounding. A top loader machine will only use approximately seven cents per hour whilst the same machine using hot water will be responsible for a fifty cents per hour usage.

Gas and Bloating Digestive Enzymes

Lately, I was having some problem with my stomach. It seemed like the food was stuck in my upper stomach and it was causing some discomfort. I often tell people when you don’t feel right try eliminating gluten and lactose from the diet. There are many study findings suggest that the human digestive system was not designed to digest gluten and lactose. However, I love eating bread, pasta and rice. To ease my stomach discomfort I started taking gluten enzyme and it has been working wonders. So I look into more about digestive enzymes. The most common causes of gas and bloating are the indigestion of our foods. Which means that we are not digesting our proteins, our starches and our fats completely and those undigested foods sit in our digestive system and create gas and bloating. The number one cause of this is that the body is not producing enough digestive enzymes from the pancreas, especially with carbohydrates. The first stage of digestion of starches begins from salivary amylase. When we are just washing the foods down and not chewing them properly. This means then that the first stage of digestion in carbohydrates is compromised. Unfortunately, as we get older, we do not produce as many digestive enzymes from the pancreas as we do when we were younger. When we eat food, it enters the stomach, the stomach liquidise it and it passes from the stomach into the small intestine, the gallbladder releases bile and the pancreas releases digestive enzymes to break

the food down into useable nutrients and send them to the right area for proper bodily function. The enzyme called Protease from your pancreas digest protein, amylase for starch and lipase digests fats. It takes from large molecules to small molecules so that it can pass through the digestive lining into your bloodstream as useable nutrients. Taking digestive enzymes as a supplement will help to digest foods better. Undigested food sitting in your digestive tract will ferment creating more gas and bloating. And over a long-term the fermenting starches can develop into nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, why because starch ferments in the small intestine and produces alcohol, therefore it causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. When you choosing enzyme supplements, it is advised to look for at least the three enzymes that help with the three main foods that you are eating. Protease for protein, Lipase for fat and Amylase for starches. One of the popular enzyme supplements from Bribie Simply Healthy is MultiGest Enzyme by Bioceuticals. It has a high potency of Amylase, Protease, Lipase as well as Tilactase, which helps to break down lactose, Cellulase breaks down cellulose, Bromelains and Papain break down protein into amino acids. Protein digestion is very important because undigested protein can create the most toxins in the body. It may seem too simple to be effective and feel a little weird and awkward at first. Anxiety or stress creates definite changes in brain activity, both electrical and chemical. Stimulating acupuncture points sends signals to various parts of the brain, but especially the limbic system or emotional part of the brain. While making a statement or affirmation about a past or present stressful event you stimulate an acupuncture point, it alters the electrical pathway and ‘releases’ the energetic connection and hold that it has on us emotionally. AN ALARMING STATISTIC By Neil Wilson

A glance at the calendar will confirm that Winter is now officially here (I’m sitting here in a short sleeve shirt at 8.30 am with the thermometer reading of twenty- two degrees – go figure) and, as opposed to bushfires, cyclones and floods, there are many Queenslanders who believe that house fires will never happen to them. With this in mind, one only has to consider recent statistics released by Queensland Fire and Emergency Serviced (QFES) to understand the inaccuracy of that belief. In one Winter period alone, QFES attended 554 house fires and Bribie Island QFES Station Officer Wayne Brown told me that compared to any other time of year, the highest number of structure fires typically occur during

Winter. ‘Fire happens fast and occupants only have a small period of time to get out of the building so having an escape plan could mean the difference between life and death,’ said Wayne. ‘It is important for every member of the household to prepare, practice and discuss the escape plan so they all know what to do. When creating an escape plan, people should make sure that there are two ways to exit every room in the house, check that there is a set of spare keys for windows and doors handy and agree on a safe meeting place outside to check that all are safe before calling Triple Zero (000),’ he added. QFES is asking everyone to “Fire Safe a Mate” in order to keep your friends and loved ones safe and so, for those

who have friends or family who live on their own or in a share house, it is essential to make certain that they know what to do in the event of a house fire. They advise regularly practising an escape plan with all in the house and to make the scenario realistic by using a blindfold and crawling on all fours to keep low in case of smoke. Wayne explained that there are many steps to take which will help in reducing the risk of house fires. ‘I would recommend that people have electrical devices such as electric blankets and heating devices checked by a qualified electrician to ensure that they are working properly. Also, it is essential to avoid placing items too close to heaters and to make sure that appropriate safety precautions are taken when using fireplaces,’ he told me. The very experienced firefighter also remarked that other important ways to reduce the risk of fire include

Left: A selection of the beautiful hats that Elizabeth has designed and made Leuteneggers where her task in the production was to insert the headband. To indicate how hard she was expected to work, Elizabeth pointed out that, if she did thirty-six one day, she was expected to do thirty-seven the next.

Whilst visitors to the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre often expect to be treated to displays of art in various styles and dimensions, I think that not many would be expecting to see the beautiful array of hats arranged as examples of the work by current “Artist of the Month,” Elizabeth Coghill. Each month, the centre features the works of one particular artist and along with this comes the opportunity to attend an

informative talk by the artist and I must say that I was pleased to be there while this talented and rather witty lady told her audience about her journey from a young girl to a talented milliner. Elizabeth described how, when only fourteen, she refused to stay at school. ‘My mother told me that if I wasn’t going back to school, I would have to get a job so I got one at a chemist shop,’ said Elizabeth. ‘I wasn’t very good at it however, I didn’t know where the cough mixture was and I wouldn’t answer the phone so they didn’t take long to realise how wrong I was for that job,’ she explained. Apparently, an interest in hats led Elizabeth to attend a course on hat making at night and from this, she found employment at the well know firm of Brisbane hat manufacturers,

From Leuteneggers, Elizabeth went to work in a city workshop where she was appointed to the job of picking up pins until she worked her way up to assisting one of the milliners. As time went by and she became more talented, Elizabeth made hats which were sold in various Brisbane outlets until, as she put it, hats were out, due mainly to the rather high hairstyles of that era. This resulted in her putting her talents aside while she raised a family and it wasn’t until the public began wanting to wear similar fashions to those of Lady Di that hats again became popular. This, of course, was the catalyst for Elizabeth’s return to the industry and from then on her designs were sought after by many. For a time, Elizabeth worked at a TAFE college, passing on her very obvious skills to others and from what

Milliner Extraordinaire Elizabeth Coghill she talked about during the morning, it is obvious that her talent as a milliner has most certainly been responsible for current influences in hat design as well as the success of those who have learned from her. As I mentioned earlier in this article, the Art Centre features a different artist each month and for July, the “Artist of the Month will be the very talented photographer and artist, Kathrin Dierich. Although the exhibition is finished now and the 2018 Eclectica display is on show in the Mathew Flinders Gallery, I must make mention of the outstanding art that was created for the Mini Masterpieces exhibition. What can be achieved in such a small area never ceases to amaze me. To find out more about what the Bribie Island Community Art Centre has to offer, you can either call them on 3408 9288 or call into the centre which is on Sunderland Drive in Banksia Beach. Opening times are Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am.

In issue sixteen of The Mini Bribie Islander, I wrote an article entitled “I Wonder What They Do In There” which highlighted the secrecy that is associated with the Masonic Lodge and its members. THE LONG WAY ROUND TO BRIBIE! Australia, on a mission to find the place to call home.

ROLLING STONE EPISODE 9

On our visit last year in September, Rolling Stone (just north of Townsville) was very windy, but this time at the end of November, it was perfect with lots of sunshine, getting hot and hotter every minute, only to be cooled down by the amazing ‘best ever’, huge lagoon pool.

Hi there, here is just a quick rehash in case you have missed the first episodes of ‘The Bribie Islander’. My short stories are all about our family, Richard my hubby, Ginger our daughter and myself, going on a 15 month trip of misadventure in a “big rig” around

Luckily we got a spot right on the water under a group of trees, which gave good shade to Opa’s tent, my Dad from Austria, who was visiting Australia for the first time. And as for Opa… well, he was in heaven, Rolling Stone heaven… and if you have not been there, well it’s like a tropical island with palm trees in combination with Australian wilderness of washed up

trees and crocodiles to keep you company. Soooo beautiful, wild and scary all in one go, you need to head straight to the new caravan bar and wash it down with some ouzo or two or three. However, we did not encounter anything scary and only saw turtles in that clear amazing turquoise water surrounded by ‘rolling stones’ of course! Ginger watched those turtles standing on the edge of the water for ages, little did she know that 15 months later she would meet some great turtle carers right here at Woorim beach, who demonstrate how they keep track of their nests and like Linda and Lyn collect any rubbish they can find on a daily basis to keep the way clear for those precious Bribie turtles!! When we were on the road the previous year with our little Jaco pop top, we also travelled with a saltwater fish tank, which we acquired in Bowen to keep our own catch alive. To add some colour we purchased two clown fish, who survived the rough sea when the caravan was on the move. At every possible destination we would collect water from the sea and store it in our bar fridge, which meant we never had any cold drinks as the fish came first and first they also came when we arrived at a new destination,

where to the amusement of all onlookers, we would set up a table outside the van with the fish tank and fill it back up with more cool sea water. Nevertheless, this care was not enough and Nemossa died and was buried at Rolling Stone the year before. This time however her boyfriend Nemo, who survived a whole year with our limited salt-water knowledge and all those other critters in the tank passed away and was waiting in the freezer to be buried at Rolling Stone. The same as last year, Richard’s nephew, Edward was back from his overseas trips with the air force and was just in time to speak a few mellow words at Nemo’s beach funeral, with the last words spoken by Opa…just as well, having a doctorate in theology. But Nemo was not the only burial we had in Townsville (60 minutes south of Rolling stone)…you guessed it?? The Ford Station Wagon!!!!!! At 560,000 km we finally had to let go of our so treasured family Wagon! It still made it up to Castle Rock lookout at Townsville but died at its last park in, a very suitable spot, back down at the Strand.

Outdoor Setting With all that excitement and lots of sightseeing for Opa, we decided to stay another few days at Rolling Stone, however, it turned out that our specific caravan spot

Ginger on the beach new spot, which was just as amazing, right under a group of palm trees, where one could relax and watch the tide come in. Although this is the end of this episode, I hope you can join me in the next edition of ‘The Bribie Islander’, with some more adventures on the

Even animals get down, but when it is persistent and they are neglecting their own needs, action is needed. Animals in zoos are commonly treated with provision of bigger, better enclosures and environmental enrichment programmes. Interestingly, the repetitive, aimless, compulsive behaviours displayed by some of these animals (such as swaying of elephants and pacing of tigers, to name a few) are usually

persistent and lifelong even after improvements to their routines and environments. Symptoms can be subtle, such as withdrawal, or having a “hair trigger” when defending the pack’s yard. Furthermore, the very same antidepressant medicines used to treat humans are also frequently used in animals, often to good success.

The 29th Abbey Medieval Festival, in all its colour and grandeur, will take place over the weekend of July 14-15, at Abbeystowe, off Bribie Island Road, Caboolture. A special Medieval Matinee will take place on Friday 13th July, from 10.30am-12.00 with a number of hospitals, foundations and allied care organizations attending. This event which is free for pre-registered organizations to attend has a unique program of medieval events designed to put a smile on the faces of sick children and their families. The event will include a medieval joust display, a demonstration of strength and skill, a generous helping of medieval sparring, an obstacle course featuring

well as Dutton Park, Pelican Waters, Solander and Bribie Island,’ he told me. John also remarked that he would never have been able to organise the two-day event without the wonderful assistance that the ladies of the club provide. ‘They are the best ladies in the game, both as bowlers and with the catering,’ John pointed out.

AND THE RADISH AWARD GOES TO…. By Neil Wilson After twenty-eight teams of four had competed in two days of competition at the Bongaree Bowls Club recently and the winning teams announced and prizes presented, there was one more team that received recognition and that was the team skipped by B. Burke who took out the Radish Award. I know that you just

Twenty eight teams took to the greens for the men’s two day carnival at the Bongaree Bowls Club. said to yourself, “What the hell is a Radish Award?” Don’t worry, I’ve never heard of it either but apparently, the Radish Award is presented to the team who has the dubious distinction of coming last. The Men’s two-day carnival is a long-standing and very popular event at the Bongaree Bowls Club and

Tournament Director John Johnson explained to me that, after a break of a few years, Barry France and himself decided to revive the tradition. ‘We have twentyeight teams of four competing in the carnival,’ said John. ‘The players are from clubs in Oakey, Pittsworth, Adelaide and Lismore as

Okay, so we’ve already talked about the team who came in at the wrong end, so now we had better give credit to the winners. The overall winners were the team led by P. Hughes with second place going to R. Strawbridge and his team while the team led by W. Cowan picked up third spot. Winners of the individual rounds were the teams skipped by B. Hudson, M. Miles, K, Smith, G. Ryan and R. Masden. Anyone who would like to find out more about the Bongaree Bowls Club is welcome to give John Johnson a call on 5497 5264.

RANTS & RAVES Dear Editor, The government’s new laws banning plastic bags are very weak. The bags used for loose fruit and vegetables will still be allowed. Likewise, the campaign to ban plastic straws is only half-hearted. When I used to regularly partake of bushwalking, the three most persistent pieces of rubbish were cigarette butts, orange peel and the tiny straws from cardboard drink cartons. Unless the last are included in the ban, the effort will be wasted. H.Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Editor, About twice a day now I am receiving calls from scammers - as I have caller id, I do not answer the phone if for instance the number starts with a 03 and eight digits, or if it is

a short number with only five digits in it. So far today I have had three such calls and it is only 2pm. On top of this I now have an Australian political party who is calling to find out how I am going to vote in the upcoming election which is nobody’s business but mine and to make matters worse, it is not even a real person on the line but a recorded message which I think is a gross invasion of privacy. It is usually from a believable number so I answer it and don’t even get the satisfaction of hanging up in their ear!! When are these practices going to stop. If you have a solution, I would be very happy to hear it. Getting a private number does not work as I know people who have them and they still get these calls. H King

Dear Editor,

Scaly lorrikets at White patch

Gordon Ramsay Master mouth. I am sorry but it doesn’t matter how good a chef Gordon Ramsay is, his foul mouth and bad behaviour negates all that he is.

With so many gums and Paperbarks currently flowering the White Patch area is host to at least three species of Lorikeets including Scaly breasted, musk, and Rainbow…………..with so many large trees offering good nesting holes the attractive birds are delightful to watch as they examine holes available.

It would be better for all to keep him off television until he can control his mouth and attitude; there are more deserving chefs out there worthy of replacing him. Farley, Bribie Island
