COMMUNITY NEWS

SOMETHING DIFFERENT THIS TIME Rae Guyder (rear), with volunteers Claire and Desley was joined by local QAS Station OIC Jarred Thorne

ust when I thought that I knew all of the many organisations that are involved with the community, I had a call from the President of a group which she said is the LAC. And obviously, my response was to ask what those letters stood for. Well, for those of you who don’t know, LAC stands for Local Ambulance Community and President Rae Guyder was calling to tell me that people from that committee would be running a public awareness stand in the Bongaree shopping centre as part of Ambulance Week. She mentioned that in the past the committee has been a part of open days at the Queensland Ambulance

Stations which are regarded as a way to engage with the community during Ambulance Week but they decided to do something a little different this year. Rae explained that whilst the LAC is affiliated with the QAS, they are their own entity and have their own finances. ‘The community is very good to us,’ Rae told me. The awareness stand was manned at the centre on both the Thursday and Saturday of Ambulance week and LAC volunteers were kept busy explaining about what they do and how they provide support to QAS which includes fundraising to purchase extra equipment

for paramedics and also raising awareness through community engagement. There was a large range of informative brochures available which provided the public with information about CPR and other courses

as well as an insight into what the QAS does. Our LAC fills a diverse role within the community and this includes providing CPR courses and teaching first aid to the children, mainly through visits to Guide and Scout meetings. Rae remarked that teaching people about what they should do while waiting for paramedics is essential. ‘There have been many instances when people’s lives have been saved because someone had that knowledge,’ said Rae. Joining the volunteers on the stand was Bribie Island Station Acting OIC Jarred Thorne who praised the work done by the ten volunteers of the Local Ambulance Committee.

A GREAT WEEKEND FESTIVAL

F

or those of you who were wondering why there were so many vehicles parked on the nature strip outside the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on a recent weekend and thought, “It’s not the time for the Vibe

By Neil Wilson Markets,” you were right, it wasn’t. Although it is only when the markets are on that so many vehicles are parked there, the attraction this time was the Bribie Island Gem and Fossicking Club’s annual Gem Festival. Held on the 8th and 9th

The Bribie Islander

There were more than eighty stalls at the 2018 Gem Festival of September, the Gem Festival offered the many who came for a look the opportunity to inspect the wares of over eighty stall holders and I’m sure that many visitors came away with one or two pieces of

the beautiful handcrafted items that were on display. Many of the stallholders have been coming to the festival for a number of years and one of those is Beachmere man Bob Saunders. He told me that

Catherine Bilson offered a great range of hand crafted pieces at her stand he has begun to slow down as far as fossicking and gem making is concerned. ‘when I was doing it all the time, myself and a few others travelled over ten thousand kilometres in just on just one fossicking excursion,’ said Bob. Another stall which offered a great range of jewellery was that of club member Catherine Bilson and after inspecting the great range of products that Catherine had on display, it became very evident why she is

also a respected teacher of her craft. For those who worked up an appetite while checking out all the stalls, the Gem and Fossicking members had a tasty range of burgers and rolls available at their food stall. Anyone who is keen to find out more about the Bribie Island Gem and Fossicking Club should call Colin Thorpe on 0420 917 625 for details.

hen I spoke to Bribie Island Orchid Society Secretary Teresa Watson about the upcoming “Spring Orchid and Foliage” show recently, she told me that there are more varieties of orchid than there are of any other plant species known to man and I would reckon that a great percentage of those varieties could be found growing at the homes of the more than 140 members of the society. Founded thirty-one years ago the society has many very keen growing members and these include Zelda Holmes who has bred an orchid which has the registered name of The Zelda Star. ‘We also have two qualified judges and three other members who are training to become qualified judges,’ said society President Paul Thomas. ‘Judging orchids

By Neil Wilson is quite a complicated process and even involves measuring certain parts of the plant with a micrometer,’ he added. The annual show has been held in the Orchid House on First Avenue at Bongaree for the previous eight years and in other locations before then and has always attracted the attention of orchid growers from far and wide. From what both Teresa and Paul have said, this year’s event will be even bigger and better and those who attend will not be disappointed. As well as numerous displays of beautiful orchids, there will be plant sales, a cake and craft stall, a potting demonstration and a sausage sizzle. Teresa mentioned that Mitre Ten have generously donated a wheelbarrow which is filled with gardening goodies to be raffled during

the two-day show. ‘The only way for people to get a ticket in that raffle is for them to come along to the show,’ said Teresa. ‘We will also be selling tickets in another raffle which has a $150 Woolworths voucher and an orchid as first prize and a $50 Woolworths voucher and an orchid as second prize. These will be sold at a number of locations around the island prior to the event,’ she explained. The Bribie Island Orchid Society “Spring Orchid and Foliage” Show will be held in the Orchid House and the Indoor Bowls Hall on October 12th from 8.30 am to 4 pm and on October 13th from 8.30 am until 3 pm. The premises is wheelchair friendly and groups of ten or more will receive a discount on the admission price. The society is always ready to welcome new members

or anyone who just wants to come along to a meeting or two for the chance to find out what goes on. For more information about the show or the society itself, those interested should log onto the website which is www. bribieislandorchidsociety. com.au or give Teresa a call on 0407 782 290.

didn’t want the heading of this article to be too long so I missed out the word “Spring” from before it but I was actually referring to the theme for the September Bribie Vibe Markets which organisers have told me is “Spring Fever.” ‘As well as all the other normal attractions for marketgoers which include stalls selling handcrafted items and fresh produce, displays by the Gem and Fossicking Club and the Woodcrafters, there will be a very special Spring raffle,’ said market coordinator Kelly Vass. ‘There are seven prizes up for grabs and they all have been donated by our very own stallholders,’ she added. Kelly explained that the prizes for the Spring raffle are an original artwork by Dianne Sherras, a $50

gift voucher for Concrete Products, jewellery by Joyce Davies and craft from Crafty Di as well as a terrarium by Walkabout Creations, a macramé pot plant holder by Jackie Brice and a tablecloth by Michelle Louise. ‘To go into the draw, marketgoers only have to spend $15 at a market stall,’ Kelly told me. ‘The raffle will be drawn on the day and this will be a great opportunity to pick up a handmade original gift for Christmas,’ she said. The Bribie Vibe Market is held on the last Sunday of each month at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive in Banksia Beach. The event offers a large number of stalls, children’s activities, food and music as well as a chance to view the art on display in the Mathew Flinders Gallery and, since its inception, it has been

STRONGER COMMUNITIES A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN

Many of you will receive my newsletter in the mail soon, thanking you for your support in the recent election. But it’s important you know how humbled I am to be chosen by you again to represent the people in this wonderful community. Since my re-election, some things have changed and some things have stayed the same. Scott Morrison is our new Prime Minister, although, we’ve got the same old Liberal policies. The cuts to our local schools and Caboolture Hospital are still being swept through and the Liberals are still fighting with each other. Meanwhile, I’m getting on with the job that you elected me to do. I’m continuing on, working with people in our community to improve our healthcare and education system, local services and jobs. Your Electorate Office has hit the ground running, working on lots of important things like the Stronger Communities

Programme. With help from a team of local community leaders, we’re working to identify funding for projects that will make our great area an even better place to live. We’ve also planned some upcoming mobile offices – you can find the details below. My team and I regularly get out and do community outreach, knocking on doors and helping people with issues. If you see us out-and-about, please stop by and say hi!

STANDING WITH OUR VETERANS – LABOR’S COMMITMENT TO SIGN A MILITARY COVENANT Over time, Governments have provided a system of Veterans Affairs and support, which I think we can agree, has let our veteran community down at times. Whenever I hear of a veteran being let down by the system, it frustrates me. It frustrates me because I know about the sacrifices our veterans have made, and the physical and psychological trauma they’ve undergone to keep our country safe. It should be

government’s responsibility to stand behind and look after our defence force personnel. Our veteran community desperately needs a solution, which is why I’ve made it a priority to work with a Shorten-Labor Government to sign a military covenant. This is a formal pact entered into by the Prime Minister and the Chief of Defence which promises to look after personnel who are currently

serving, and those who have left. Part of Labor’s plan is to put in place a reporting and accountability mechanism which will require governments to report annually to parliament on how they are meeting their responsibilities under the covenant. I’ll be working hard to make sure Labor is elected, so that we can put this important agreement in place and make sure that our defence personnel are getting the support they need.

MOBILE OFFICES AND EVENTS

I know it’s hard trying to make it into the office during the week. So, we’re coming to you! Feel free to come along to any of the mobile offices below and raise any issues – we’re here to help!

ENTERTAINERS OF THE Island

NICK COMINO

S

By Neil Wilson

ince I began to write articles for The Bribie Islander and The Mini Bribie Islander, I have pointed out on a couple of occasions that Elvis is alive and well and living on Bribie Island and in case anyone has been wondering just how I came to that conclusion, perhaps I should explain that I was talking about local entertainer, Nick Comino, aka Elvis Parsley. The following article can be seen as an excellent example of how the right choice of words and quite a lot of talent enabled someone to use one career to pave the way for another. Nick was born in Gympie where his father was a farmer and fruit shop proprietor and after spending the youngest portion of his life in that area, he attended high school at Strathpine when his parents relocated to Kallangur. Jumping forward a few years, in what would seem to be a natural progression for someone who was brought up in a family of fruit growers and retailers, Nick became the owner of a fruit and vegetable shop in the town of Woodford. ‘The bloke next door knew that I liked to sing

Elvis Presley songs and one day he said that I was Elvis Parsley because I sold fruit and vegies,’ Nick told me. ‘I sat on that for about a year and after a bit of thought, I decided to call my shop, “Grapelands,”’ he said. Nick explained about how from there on, the whole Elvis persona took shape. ‘I learned to sing properly and then, after getting together with a few local muso’s, we formed a band called, “Elvis Parsley and The Swinging Zucchinis” and did a couple of shows for the locals before starting to perform at the shop. It was then that I began to really play with words and thought, “I could be The King of Salad Roll.” Word got around fast and we started to get tour buses coming to the shop and then the media and someone suggested that I was the “Singing Salad Seller,”’ Nick recalled. When asked about where his artistic talent comes from, Nick credits his mum for passing on her abilities to him. Encouraged by the sudden popularity, Nick began to play with words and came up with song titles such as “Suspicious Limes,” “Artichoke Hotel”

The Bribie Islander

Top Left: The King of Salad Roll Top Middle: Making an appearance at Locals Only Top Right: Elvis Parsley entertained customers at the Grapelands fruit shop in Woodford

and “Viva Los Vegies” and television shows like Rove Live and Great Outdoors featured him in one of their segments. Sadly, Nick closed “Grapelands” in 2010 and due to having made many visits to Bribie Island to indulge in his love of fishing, he moved here and has been a well-known member of the community ever since. He pointed out that he still owns the property where his rather famous shop stood and has left the “Grapelands” sign there for people to see. From when he moved to our beautiful part of the world, Nick has performed at a number of events including Locals Only and the Vibe Markets although he did say that he doesn’t do many shows anymore. ‘I definitely don’t perform off the island and I just liking helping out the community now,’ said Nick. ‘It is more of a hobby now and I spend time composting and composing. If Elvis were alive now I would sing a song to him that has the words, “A little more fruit and vegies – A little less fat in here,”’ he remarked. As well as his proven talent as a singer, “The King of Salad Roll is also an accomplished

poet and I had the privilege of hearing him recite the following poem which was for his father. “Farming and fishing occupies my time – and also the odd word written in rhyme. My life is simple but its rewards are great – because it’s happiness I’ve found, that makes me relate. Working with nature I see life in perfection – but man’s own doings take the other direction. The riches I have are not in wealth – but in the life I lead that brings happiness and good health.” As we sat on Nick’s balcony, I commented on all the herbs that he has growing in his front yard and it really didn’t surprise me when he replied with, ‘It’s parsley, I have to keep the name going,’ As another example of his love affair with all things green, when I arranged to pay him a visit, Nick told me that I should just look for the greenest grass at the front of any home in the street and, I must say, he definitely wasn’t exaggerating. As I left after what was a very pleasant hour spent learning about this very popular entertainer, Nick presented me with a pot filled with parsley plants so I have called it Elvis. So for anybody who had doubts, I think that this is ample proof of Elvis being alive and well on Bribie Island and for a chance to hear him perform, I would suggest a visit to the Country Music Club’s October concert.

BRIBIE ISLAND RADIO MODELLERS ASSOCIATION By Neil Wilson

I

n the very first article of this series, I pointed out that I would devote each article to a person or organisation that is associated with the Caboolture Airfield but, as it so happens, I may have told a teensy weensy lie. Whilst the following article is certainly about a group of people who have a keen interest in aviation, the aircraft that they fly are a little on the small side to use the facilities at the airfield.

The Bribie Island Radio Modellers Association (BIRMA) was founded over five years ago and prior to moving to their current location at Rutters Road in Elimbah, the members used the Sandstone Point Oval as a base. ‘The area was rather unsuitable and all too often we had to retrieve our planes from the surrounding trees or the swamp,’ said founding President Kel Bartlett. ‘We knew that we had to find a better location and when Lance Blatchford offered us the use of a field on his property at Elimbah, our problems were solved. He told us that the rent would be a bottle of Scotch whiskey and a carton of beer per year,’ Kel told me. Founding Secretary Murray Dennis explained that when the club was first formed, it was done so by a small

A meticulously built model of a Hercules transport

group of radio control model enthusiasts who sailed their boats on the Sunderland Drive lake. ‘As it happened, some of us were keen to fly model planes so we made the decision to form a more official group,’ said Murray. ‘We gave it a name which would allow it to include members who were not model aircraft enthusiasts,’ he added. As founding members, both Kel and Murray have handed their roles as President and Secretary over to other members at the last AGM

and now just enjoy being able to concentrate on flying their numerous models. Murray told me that both he and Kel, as well as a few of the other members, have also been licensed private pilots and owned their own aircraft. ‘I owned a Cessna 150 for some time but eventually sold it,’ said Murray. Because I had always hired it to the local aero club, the only expense that I had when I flew it was the cost of the fuel. After I sold it and wanted to hire a plane, I was shocked at how

much it cost me so I gave flying away,’ he said. Kel described about becoming interested in becoming a pilot after a friend had flown him to a customer who wanted to buy a swimming pool and, after he came home with a deal, he had learned to fly. ‘I went halves with someone in a syndicate to buy a V-Tail Beechcraft Bonanza,’ Kel explained. ‘That was a beautiful aircraft and, after some time, the other guy bought me out,’ he said. As an organisation which now has over forty members, BIRMA has been able to fund a number of improvements at the Rutters

Road location and these include BBQ facilities, a four-station charging facility, two containers for storage of equipment which includes their ride-on mowers and they have also provided two portable toilets. Kel and Murray told me that the members of the club own a really diverse range of model aircraft in all sizes and types which include military and general aviation planes. They pointed out that whilst some of the aircraft are still powered by the older type of glo-plug or diesel engines, many now have electric motors and this is the reason for the charging stations at the club’s field. During my conversation with Kel and Murray, Kel

Volunteer IS?

A

local politician once made the comment to me that this island survives because of its volunteers and as far as I’m concerned, never a truer word was spoken. Over the time that I have been writing articles for both The Mini Bribie Islander and The Bribie Islander, I have been privileged to tell the story of so many volunteers within the local community who give freely of their time to improve the life of others and whilst talking to these dedicated people, I have gained an insight into

just what it is that drives them when they commit to whatever task is required without the benefit of any financial reward or in many instances, any recognition for their efforts. Whilst each person who becomes a volunteer has their own specific reasons for doing so, they all share a willingness to undertake a service and a belief that they are capable of inciting change and making progress. In most situations, volunteering means working side by side with others and this

connects them to other human beings as they are working toward a common goal.

Volunteers have their own skill set and for someone to gain a sense of satisfaction from what they offer, it is a wise idea to volunteer in a position that makes use of those skills, meaning that the cause they are working for also receives the most benefit as well. All of the wonderful volunteers who I have talked to tell me that they always feel good when they can put a smile on someone’s face and in my opinion, that is the true meaning of making a difference.

this list does not mention all the opportunities for volunteering.

Within our community, there are many organisations that continue to operate due to the commitment of volunteers and anyone who is thinking about dedicating some of their time to help the community should perhaps contact one of the organisations listed below. I should point out that

As I have said, that is not even close to being a complete list of organisations who support the community but is an indication of places which need volunteers. Remember, it is important to devote your time to doing something that you enjoy, therefore ensuring that all involved receive the most benefit. If anyone would like to know about other volunteering opportunities, they are welcome to give me a call on 0448 932 484.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

LISTENING SAVES LIVES Pastor Ray introduced Chaplains Ken Piva, Wendy Nelson and Rebecca Andrews

n our school community, there are a number of necessary roles which are undertaken by dedicated people and, as well as those who fill the roles of teachers, special education teachers, administration staff and maintenance people, there is someone who has taken on the task of being available to all at the school when needed and that is the School Chaplain. School Chaplains

have been providing social, emotional and spiritual support in schools for more than twenty-six years and their roles include promoting positive spirituality in all that they do as well as providing opportunities for students, staff and families to take advantage of the spiritual strengths, assets and resources available to them. Scripture Union Queensland (SU QLD) is the major

provider of School chaplains and have placed chaplains in sixty-three percent of all Queensland state primary schools and eighty-eight percent of all Queensland state high schools with all three Bribie Island schools being included in those statistics. Chaplaincy at Bribie Island schools is funded through a combination of a Federal Government grant and donations from community organisations as well as fundraising which is organised by the Local Chaplaincy Committee (LCC) and the most recent of these events was the 2018 Annual Chaplaincy Breakfast at the Bribie RSL on September 7th. A large crowd attended the event which was opened at 6.30 am by MC Pastor

Ray Airosa who is the LCC Chairman and Bribie Island Baptist Church Pastor. After thanking everyone for coming along, Pastor Ray introduced Division One Councillor Brooke Savige who welcomed the distinguished guests and also gave the apologies of those who were unable to attend. Councillor Savige also thanked all the local businesses that have supported the event through their donations and she pointed out that this support happens because they believe in chaplaincy and also believe in our young people. Prior to the hungry crowd beginning to eat breakfast, Pastor Ray said grace and then introduced the special guest speaker, Adam James. Adam is a seasoned community worker who started a café called “A Cup From Above” in 2012 with the idea of training those who were struggling with

Guest speaker Adam James gave some examples of how the chaplains work within the school community

significant issues to become baristas and consequently find employment. During his talk, Adam explained that it was always about more than the coffee and before long, the café accidentally became a drop-in centre for people in extreme crisis situations. ‘People who were domestic violence victims, drug dealers and fugitives from the law all came to

the café to see the “Café Chaplain” and try to turn their life around,’ said Adam. Six years on from opening, the café served its final cup of coffee and now Adam and his team continue to serve by supporting individuals through the most extreme crisis situations within our community. Adam went on to provide examples of how the school chaplains make such an incredible difference within the community and also mentioned some of the situations which he had faced during his time as a community worker. As I have found to be the case whenever someone is giving a talk, whilst they pass on varying amounts of interesting information, there is always one thing that stands out, and in this instance, it was when Adam told the audience that “Listening Saves Lives.” Following the talk by Adam James, Pastor Ray

welcomed the Bribie Island School Chaplains, Mr Ken Piva (Bribie Island State Primary School), Ms Rebecca Andrews (Bribie Island State High School) and Ms Wendy Nelson (Banksia Beach State Primary School) to the stage and they received a strong round of applause for their dedicated efforts. The next item on the morning’s agenda was the auction of numerous items which had been donated by supporting businesses and private community members. These included a framed Broncos jersey, a gift voucher for Savige’s Seafood,

a signed swim cap which had belonged to gold medalwinning swimmer, Bribie’s own Lakeisha Patterson. The bidding was strong for all items and auctioneer Barry France seemed to always to rake in a few extra bids which increased the total that was raised from the auction. The final part of the program was the drawing of the raffles and quite a few people were the lucky winners of a range of items before Pastor Ray closed the fundraiser by thanking all who attended and made the event such a success.

B RIB I E S IMPLY HE A LTH Y Can we stop money dictating lives?

By Heenam Kim Most of us worry about money every day; most of our stress is around money. We often feel hopeless and beaten by the economic structure. It doesn’t matter how hard we work, we don’t seem to go anywhere. The little money we earn busy paying the bills, paying rent or mortgages and credit card debts. For our struggle banks are making a lot of money with our hard . I dare to call this is a modern slavery. We are so conditioned about MONEY, we can’t imagine living without it. What if there is no money? I found a very interesting movement called ‘UBUNTU’ it began in South Africa. At the Nelson Mandela’s memorial service Obama talked about UBUNTU, which he believes captures Mandela’s idea. ‘Oneness of humanity, we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves by sharing ourselves with others and caring for those around us’. About two hundred years ago America’s third president Thomas Jefferson once said “Banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to

control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs to.” UBUNTU Communities where everyone contributes their natural talents or skills for the benefits of the community. It began from a small town of around 5000 people who wanted to participate in their own salvation, their own rescue mission by contributing three hours a week. Use the special skills and talents of the people. Then develop the sound business plan to start a variety of community projects to match the skills and individual potential. These businesses will belong to participants. Analyse how much it needs to consume among the community then produce at least three times as much. Everything people produce is distributed to everyone who participates and the other 2/3 are sold on open markets. This income will go to the investors and will be used to run and expand the organisation. There is also a great community multi-level marketing company called ATOMY recently opened in Australia. This company also thrives with a masseconomic system, offering prestige products to its

The Bribie Islander

members at the lowest price possible. Allowing the masses to enjoy quality products and improve their life by sharing an income from product sales through a generous commission scheme for the members. The company growth is beyond our imagination. This company started very small in Korea in 2009 and less than 10 years the company expanded to the USA, Japan, Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, Cambodia, Philippine, Malaysia Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, Russia, India, and Colombia. The most famous and popular product Atomy is Hemohim, which designed to improve cancer patients among their ever-popular skincare products. The skincare sets were sold out within a month after opening the company in Australia. Please come and experience a free facial treatment from the

shop that you will fall in love with. By using and sharing experiences these wonderful products, we can eventually be free of the financial burden. I am currently interested in forming a community organic garden as a part of UBUNTU movement; if anyone can help and would like to participate please let us know.

s most people would be aware, the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre is arguably one of the most pro-active local organisations which support the needy and homeless

within our community and to continue in that role, ongoing funding is essential. Whilst the centre does receive a small amount of government assistance, this falls far short of what is required to provide the vast range of services that

are available to those who need them. With that in mind, Neighbourhood Centre volunteers have been collecting donations from businesses throughout the area in preparation for a Cent Auction which will be held at the Bribie Island Hotel on October 6th at 1 pm and centre manager Cecelia Taylor has told me that the event is expected to be very well attended by people

who are eager to grab a bargain. ‘Items up for auction include DVDs, craft, paintings and homewares as well as vouchers, linen, shoes and lots more,’ Cecelia explained. ‘The entry fee of two dollars will include a door prize ticket and a cent auction sheet,’ she added. The services that are available at the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre include counselling, food parcels, access to Centrelink and a range of courses such as anger management and handling addiction. The funds raised by the cent auction will assist the centre to continue with their never-ending work within the community. For more information about the services that are available or to enquire about becoming a volunteer, those interested can either call 3408 8440 or pay a visit to 9 Verdoni Street in Bellara. HEALTH

IT’S ABOUT THE PIECES

By Neil Wilson

F

or those living with diabetes, either as a sufferer or as family or a carer, there a number of necessary steps that need to be taken in order for them to live well and, as a way of providing those within the diabetes community with the information and tools which will enable them to achieve that, the Bribie Island Diabetes Support Group are hosting a seminar on October 20th at the Bribie RSL. Entitled “Putting the Pieces Together” the seminar will feature a number of guest speakers who all, in their professional roles, are regarded as an individual piece of the diabetes jigsaw. As a GP for more than thirty-five years, Dr Chris Michaelides has a strong interest in the management of chronic disease and has been running structured mini-clinic care of diabetes for almost all of his career. He has a passion for the development of programmes which will help optimise outcomes for GPs and their patients. He will talk about what piece of the jigsaw puzzle relates to a general practitioner. Local pharmacist Naz Hudda

has been working with our diabetes community for over ten years and during his presentation, he will provide information about new medications on the market and how taking medication when and as directed is so important. Diabetes educator and dietician Lisa Diggles, who is also Patron of the support group, is in a unique position to look at diabetes management from two sides and her presentation will help people to better manage their diabetes and also put another piece of the puzzle together. Joining the other guest speakers will be a local personal trainer who has been running a special programme for more than seven years. Her programme is supported by Moreton Bay Regional Council and is beneficial for everyone, especially those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes. She will talk about how all exercise is beneficial and is a positive towards better diabetes management. With diabetes reported as on the rise within the Moreton Bay region, this seminar will be of benefit in helping people to understand how

the various members of their health team fit the puzzle. ‘If we can have a positive and respectful interaction with our health team, then putting the pieces together should make,’ said Diabetes Support Group Vice-President Jan Donaldson. This very informative seminar will be held in the Conference Room at the Bribie RSL on October 20th and doors open for registration at 9 am. The seminar will run from 9.30

am until 2 pm and the cost of $15 per person will include lunch and all day tea/coffee. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Rhonda on 0418 675 494 or sending her an email to rhondaorman13@Hotmail. com. Payments to the group can be made to The Bribie Island Diabetes Support Group Inc NAB bank account which is BSB 084566, Account 943 971 216.

has been in their family for decades. This situation has prompted members of many communities to raise funds which can then be

used to provide some relief to our country cousins and this includes local organisations, one of which is the Ningi based Crafty Shed. The Crafty Shed was founded twelve years ago and is home too a variety of groups, the most pro-active being the quilting group, Pumicestone Piecers. There also the Crafter Critters who practice card making, embroidery and crocheting and there is also some who are accomplished artists. As a contribution to the Farm aid appeal, Crafty Shed President Beryl Higgins recently presented a $2,000 cheque to the Lions Club of Sandstone Point and that money will go directly to those who need it. Eager to contribute more to the appeal, Crafty Shed Vice-President Stephanie Domagala, an artist of some note, has donate a painting which will be raffled at the end of October and she told me that anyone who would like a few tickets in the raffle can either call in to the Crafty Shed or give her a call on 5497 5013. Stephanie also mentioned that the organisation which has about eighty members at present, is always keen to welcome new members anyone interested can give her a call to find out more.

ART Art fron the Woodpile

IT’S FROM THE WOODPILE

A wonderful example of the pieces that are made by the Woodies

By Neil Wilson

T

hroughout the ages, humans have crafted many items from timber, not as much in modern times as they did prior to the introduction of products such as plastic and other man-made materials, but still there are some for whom the desire to create beautiful wooden items will never fade and the almost two hundred members of the Bribie and District Woodcrafters Association (The Woodies) can definitely be regarded as belonging to

that group. Founded in the 1990’s, The Woodies is based at the rear of the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre complex and over the years, dedicated woodcrafters have produced a countless number of items for both their own use and for other organisations. As a means of demonstrating the level of skill that can be found amongst members, the association hosts an annual exhibition to showcase their work and this year,

the event, entitled “Art from the Woodpile” will be held from 20th until 28th October in the Mathew Flinders Gallery at the Arts Centre. As it is also a competition, “Art from the Woodpile” will feature the works that have been lovingly created by members and will fall into several categories which include carving, wood turning, pyrography and furniture making and

this time around. ‘We send out invitations to other woodworking clubs in the South-East Queensland area and we get visitors from everywhere,’ said Ian. ‘Some people regard exhibitions like this as somewhere to pick up an early Christmas present and, as well as some

ABBEY MUSEUM HOSTS KIDS DIG IT! ORIENTAL FAMILY FUN WEEK

T

he award-winning Abbey Museum presents ‘Kids Dig It! Oriental Family Fun’ week from September 2428th offering families and children aged between 3 to 13, an affordable, immersive, educational experience based on the wonders of the ancient Orient.

The Museum is the custodian of some amazing Oriental artefacts including water pots, bowls, snuff bottles, jars, chess pieces, a Chinese cast iron bell dated between 200BC-200AD, an array of knives and swords from Japan and a Museum favourite - Chinese Tan-era

tomb artefact of a female musician dated from 6-9th century. The ‘Kids Dig It! Oriental Family Fun Week tells the stories of this unique Oriental collection fulfilling the vision of the Abbey Museum ‘enhancing lives through the stories created from our collection’. The well-loved series of Kids Dig It! family fun weeks take place each school holidays and in addition to Oriental, also includes Viking and Egyptian, Medieval and Stoneage cultures. Ms. Melanie De Regt, Small Events Manager at the Abbey Museum and former school teacher commented on the event’s aims. ‘We want to create a unique and enriching experience for the children in the community, something that

AWARDS

COURAGEOUS KIDS

By Neil Wilson The Lions “Children of Courage” Awards were introduced as a way of recognising a very special group of young Australians and their families, firstly in Western Australia and then in other areas of the country. There four categories for which a child may be

nominated and these are Special Needs, Courageous Act, Sibling Recognition and Inspiring Sporting Achievement. The Lions Club of Sandstone Point has recently been proud hosts to children from the district who were

selected to receive The Children of Courage Awards and Project Co-ordinator Keith Hadley explained to me that whilst there are many awards that recognise the achievements of young people, children with special needs are not catered for. ‘Tye Children of Courage Awards fills that void and it is not a competition as every recipient of an award is a winner in their own right,’ said Keith. ‘The purpose of the awards is to act as an encouragement for the future, help them to believe in themselves and also to help increase their self-worth. All children want to be accepted by others, regardless of any special needs that they may have,’ he added. When the awards are presented, each child is

called forward and a short summary of the reasons for the award is read out and the recipient is then presented with a plaque or a medallion and a certificate. At the ceremony, District Chairperson of Children of Courage Awards, Diane Unwin and Division One Councillor Brooke Savige shared the presentation of awards to some very excited and happy young people with the recipients and their families being then treated to afternoon tea.

Good Tricks – Masked Lapwings

Have you wondered why Masked Lapwings (colloquially referred to in Australia as “Plovers”) repeatedly put themselves in the way of your car while driving? They fly or run in front of passing vehicles, then peel off at the last moment and head back

to their nest and mate, who are often located on the traffic island in the centre of the road where they are safe from cats (relatively) and other predators. Mr and Mrs Lapwing are a team, and one of them deliberately lures away threats using themselves as bait, while the other remains with the nest. The luring Lapwing stays close to the car or “threat” it is leading away, under the pretense that it is an easy target. Sometimes they even pretend to be injured, flying slowly or low to the ground – but make no mistake, this is simply playing the “lame duck”, and is a very good trick!

HEALTH

SPRING TIME ALLERGY TIME By Justin Gribbin, Eye Envy Optometrist

S

eptember marks the start of Spring and for many, it also marks the beginning of red, itchy and watery eyes. Justin Gribbin from Eye Envy Optometrist at Morayfield, says the chance of suffering from an eye allergy this season, is much higher than usual. “With such little rain fall this year, airborne agents that cause irritation, such as pollen and grasses, are more active and likely to cause eye allergies,” said (insert name). “When not treated correctly, eye allergies can become so severe that they affect your concentration and ability to work. So, if you experience a new or unusual allergic

reaction this spring, it’s important to have your eyes checked.” Justin Gribbin says the most common of all eye allergies is Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis where the body’s reaction can cause swelling of the conjunctiva, the thin layer lining the whites of the eyes and inner eyelids. “Some people also experience cold and flu-like symptoms such as sneezing, sniffling and a stuffy nose.” “To manage allergic conjunctivitis, it is important to determine the cause of the allergen to enable you to avoid it, and to therefore reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms.” “Having your eyes tested as soon as any signs of an

allergy present themselves, gives you the best chance of eye allergy relief.” The commons symptoms to watch for include: • Itchiness • Redness

• Lid swelling • Watery eyes For further information please contact Eye Envy Optometrist Morayfield 5432 3077

LIVING WITH A DISABILITY By Anne Matthews, Public Relations Director, Bribie Rotary

M

any people think having a disability is quite rare. However, global estimates in 2017 found that one in seven adults (over 14%) have some form of disability. We tend to judge our fellow man quite severely – yet strangely do the opposite when dealing with animals, eg the lame seagull is always given the first chip, the odd looking dog is affectionately patted and loved. Wouldn’t it be nice to treat disabled people this way? The word “disability” covers a range of functional restrictions – physical, mental, intellectual and sensory. These can vary from mild to severe, and might affect a person at any time

in their life, from an infant born with an intellectual impairment to an older adult who becomes unable to walk, hear or see. Rather than turn away we should all try to help these people, as – there, but for the grace of God - (might) go I. At a recent Rotary meeting on Bribie Island one of our members gave a heartfelt presentation about the isolation and loneliness of being hearing impaired. He talked about the difficulties involved in finding a support group; the fact that because he is over 65 he is not entitled to assistance under the National Disability Insurance; and the treatment he receives from shop assistants when he tries to communicate - many of whom think he is slightly mad because he cannot

hear perfectly. Somehow he managed to bring humour into a situation that is really just deplorable. Next time you meet a person who is hearing impaired, remember – they are not lacking in mental prowess nor in intelligence – they just cannot hear you perfectly. So face the person, speak clearly, or turn the computer screen towards them so they can see how much they owe, or write on a piece what you want to tell them. Remember this disabled person is someone’s mum or dad, brother or sister, best mate, or next door neighbour. The same principle applies to the blind, those in wheel chairs, and those suffering other disabilities. Treat them as you would any other person who needs your help. People react badly to those with “Disabilities” – generally due to ignorance and lack of information. Our World has some important lessons to learn about understanding how to relate to people who are living with disabilities. People living with physical and sensory disabilities are some of the smartest people in the world. You just never know what someone with a disability is capable of! For example, the achievements

of the late Stephen Hawking, a man in a wheelchair who couldn’t speak and the much loved blind singers Andre Bocelli and Steve Wonder. Often a Disability results in other senses being heighten for example the fictional Marvel’s “Daredevil”, who is blinded as a child and becomes a superhero because his other senses are so enhanced. To celebrate the achievements of local people with disabilities and raise awareness of their plight, the Rotary Club of Bribie Island and Spinal Life Australia are combining to hold an afternoon tea and Fashion parade on the International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD) - Monday 3 December. The event will be held at Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club, Banksia Beach staring at 2.00pm. The cost is $35 per person and the parade will feature both able-bodied members of Rotary and those in our community living with a disability.

Guest speaker on the day is Susanne Rea, OAM from the World’s Greatest Meal/End Polio Campaign. All proceeds will go to Rotary’s End Polio which means for every dollar we raise, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $2. This is such an important cause at the present time with the eleventh case of polio located in PNG. Please ring me on 0409 244 005 if you would like any further information.

CHERYL MORTIMER

Cheryl demonstrating how it’s done

Prior to attending Artist of the Month Cheryl Mortimer’s Artist’s Talk, my knowledge regarding the art of printmaking was limited to not much more than knowing how to spell the word and I have to make the comment that, after watching Cheryl demonstrate the basics of how it’s done, I now understand why she regards the results as UN.B.LEAFABLE. Yes, that is the title that Cheryl gave to her informative and sometimes humorous talk at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre recently. Cheryl Mortimer has exhibited her works in various exhibitions for thirtyfive years and some of those works are held in private collections throughout Australia and overseas. She admits that she has been fascinated with the arts from when she was just a young child and has been fortunate

that her working career as a visual art teacher allowed her to become heavily involved in art practices. ‘In my own art practice, I like to explore the chemistry of resist, the happenstance of shape and colour and, amongst other things, the interplay of mediums,’ said Cheryl. ‘I like to explore new approaches as well as experiment and break the rules and I am not a particularly realistic artist. I believe that if you want the work to look like a photograph, you should use a photograph,’ she explained. With regard to her demonstration of printmaking, Cheryl pointed out that she has a real fascination with the art, especially the more spontaneous technique of mono-printing. ‘I mostly reflect on aspects of the landscape and lately, I have been exploring the printing that is left behind when leaves are boiled in proximity

Artist of the Month coordinator Debra Mieth introduced Cheryl to the audience

to paper and cloth,’ Cheryl said. ‘This is an intoxicating and very addictive process,’ she added. During her talk and demonstration, Cheryl told her audience that learning the art of printmaking is a long process and as with most things that we attempt, there can be failures but there can also be some spectacular successes. I have

no doubt that everyone who attended Cheryl’s talk came away with new ideas and perhaps even the desire to become more involved with the art themselves and I would also suggest that many will make a point of attending “Print.ed,” the fourth annual exhibition of the Bribie Printmakers which will be on display in the Mathew Flinders Gallery from September 25th and officially opened on September 29th. A spokesperson for the group has said that whilst sometimes people form an incorrect idea of what printmaking is all about and think it is only an image which is copied on a photocopier but in fact, the process actually began as a way to tell stories, mainly religious in nature, to people who couldn’t read.

The results can be spectacular

NEXT MONTH

Each month, the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre Artist of the Month gives a talk/demonstration regarding their work and this is held on the second Friday of the month at 10.30 am. For October, the Artist of the Month is “The Working

Together Group” and, as is required as a part of the program, their work will be on display at the centre from the beginning of the month. For more information about what the Arts Centre has to offer, either give the helpful volunteer staff a call on 3408 9288 or pay a visit to the centre on Sunderland Drive in Banksia Beach.

and afternoon tea will be provided. The Golden Entertainers are well known on Bribie Island and nearby areas for their melodic voices and those who have been to one of their many concerts wait in anticipation for the next one to be announced. This year alone they will perform twelve times and as well as the October concert, they will give a concert at Respite and Support Services in November and will back that up with a show at the Foley Street Aged Care facility in December. The “Golden Jukebox” concert will commence at 1.30 pm on October 17th and, as these shows sell out fast, anyone who would like to come along for what promises to be a really wonderful few hours of entertainment should call either Cora on 0447 144 725 or Jean on 3408 1441 without delay to secure their tickets.

ike a pint of Guinness, (available on the day) there’s definitely a sense of charm, beauty, and mystery to Celtic music. Some hear the word Celtic and conjure images of faeries; others immediately think of Ireland. Who’s right? Well, both are! In the broadest sense, anything related to the Celtic nations (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Cornwall, and Brittany) can be Celtic. The distinctive music that emerged from this region all falls under the umbrella of Celtic music, with the Irish as the main producers

of Celtic music’s traditional reels and jigs. Bribie is extremely lucky to have a talented core group of musicians who regularly play together at various venues. Such is the array of talent that musicians travel some distance to play with them. The furthest have come from Tasmania and many from the Brisbane and Gold Coast area. You can enjoy a great meal at The Jetty Restaurant or just roll up and hear great Celtic music from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on September 23rd at Bongaree.

n one of my early morning walks together with my camera complete with a big zoom lens (which often gets a few remarks from fellow walkers on the size, so I have to explain …….if you want to photograph birds you must have a really good camera and lens to do it with.) whilst in the National Park to the east of the Pacific Harbour Golf Club I came across this “Big Grey” who was a little miffed I believe that I should be sharing his domain so early in the morning. Anyway after exchanging a face to face confrontation he and his companion decided that there was other paths to follow, so he bid me good morning and hopped away. ..

TRAVEL

THE LONG WAY ROUND TO BRIBIE! By Sabine Von Graz

A

fter our wonderful outback experience in Coober Pedy, we decided to head to Alice Springs as it was time again for Richard to fly back to Brisbane for work. We enjoyed the long days on the road, with the Dodge pulling our cosy house on wheels and overtaking road trains with ease. Once on the outskirts of Alice Springs one drives through the MacDonnell mountain range, before the dry desert town reveals itself, stretched out in the valley and surrounded by the red and yellow colours of the bush and sand. At the same time, it was back to civilisation with large shopping centres, restaurants and industrial areas.

Episode 15 - Alice Springs

Reading up on Wiki camps in regards to safety and petfriendly parks, we decided to stay slightly out of town. At Coober Pedy, we met a gorgeous family from Victoria with two children who were heading north as well, and as luck had it, they decided to stay in the same caravan park, and both of us needed to get our cars fixed. None of those big trips around Australia would be any fun without some sort of car trouble, and apart from a broken bolt on one of the wheel hubs, the Dodge also revealed itself to have an ejector seat! This means the seat was not fastened to the car anymore but rather fancy -free, and all hubby needed was that special button to

catapult me out of the car, when he was sick of my driving tips. With our friends however it was a simple radiator hose for a Mazda BT50, which took over a week to arrive, and we were not sure if that was a tourist trap to make you stay longer, or just the sheer remoteness of the town. The Dodge, even though being American, was actually not too bad for parts, but nevertheless left Ginger and me stranded without a car for nearly a week. Luckily there was a good bike path leading into town, as long as one could avoid all the broken, bent and melted wine bottles along the way. I decided not to comment on those bottles, but Ginger could not help herself and had to mention to our friends that those bottles, with the birdies on them, were the same brand that mummy was drinking!!! Well, it looks like the ‘economic’ chardy is a favourite along the Todd river as well! The week flew by with Ginger and her friend Makayla painting birdhouses, getting fit with ‘Gummihupfen’ (elastics) and asking me to crochet some matching beanies with ears. Not to mention BSDE, Brisbane School of Distance Education, which kept us on our toes.

Pulling the rig

Turns out I was the ‘home tutor’, with Ginger being online with Skype for around 4 hours a day, followed by homework and assignments, which often left no daytime hours for museums or sightseeing. The advantage was, that you actually got a pretty good idea if your child understood the lesson, and one could troubleshoot to clear up any shortcomings, which Richard did when it came to maths. Although she worked with headphones, I could hear her answer or posing questions combined with intense concentration and smiles when she got a tick from her teacher. We could not detect any

Girls doing BSDE

bullying and the camaraderie grew when once again there was a computer glitch making the teacher disappear from the screen, causing excitement with kids chatting to each other online, pitching in ideas on how to

fix the technical break down. Busy with school but stuck in the van with cabin fever, I was starting to reminisce about Bribie, and how great it would be to dip into the waves at Woorim! Needless to say, I was relieved when I finally got the call that the Dodge was ready. A mature lady, dressed in a beautiful suit, who was working for the service centre came to pick us up. Talking to her I found out that she was from New Zealand, and people come from all over the world to find their special something in Alice Springs. She loved the rough edges,

The town of Alice Springs

weather, and history of this desert town, offering all the mod cons one needs nowadays. At the same, time Alice Springs is still a bit of the ‘wild west’, if you seek it out,

especially in bars we were told by a nurse, who is kept very busy stitching people back together. Nevertheless, one can avoid most of that and instead soak up the feeling of being and living in the centre of Australia, in a town in the middle of the desert! As the lady from New Zealand pointed out, if you find your vibe in Alice Springs then that will always be home for you. By now you have probably got the idea that the town grew on us, giving me the

MacDonnell Ranges

inspiration to develop a logo, and calling my new art studio in Caboolture ‘Welcome to Alice’, a combination of outback, fairytales and Alice Springs! Although this is the end of this episode, I hope you can join me in the next edition of ‘The Bribie Islander’, when we soak up some more desert vibes at Uluru on the ‘The Long Way Round to Bribie’! ‘The Long Way Round to Bribie’! sabine@svgdesign.com.au

the team arriving just before kickoff. The game started at a furious pace and the Caloundra side scored in the first few minutes. Bribie clawed their way back into the match and a superb through ball saw Hannah Bulley one on one with the

goal keeper and she calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to equalize 1 all. Late in the first half, Caloundra broke away from their half and an unlucky deflection off a Bribie player made the game 2-1 at halftime. Both teams put it on the line in the second half and with a succession of 6 corners to Bribie it looked likely they’d

score, alas the ball didn’t drop their way and the game ended at 2-1 to Caloundra. It was a tough game and the Bribie ladies showed courage, determination and never gave up. There is no single player of the match, they played hard and as a team and also deserve the recognition. Congratulations to the Caloundra team and also their players that backed up to play in the Premier Women’s’ Grand Final after our match. Look out next year!

HAVE YOUR SAY

RANTS & RAVES

Dear Editor, CENSUS SENSE OR SENSELESSNESS Where is the sense in everyday people filling in census forms when we have senseless people in George Street and Canberra who take no notice of the facts presented to them? For years the big wigs, who know all, have been stating that the population of Australia will not reach 25 million until the late 2030’s. Hello, this happened on 7th August this year. This mismanagement of planning has a profound effect on all our lives. A complete lack of infrastructure investment that is running at least 20 years too late. All the population of the island and surrounding areas know this to there detriment. The connection from Caboolture to the island is a complete mismatch where the

governments, local, state and federal cannot make up their minds whether the road should be one, two or three lanes wide. This is a highly dangerous situation that causes many accidents. As for the final connection to the island, as a matter of urgency, the bridge needs to be duplicated. If for some reason the existing bridge was put out of action with no connection to the mainland the people on the island would not have any water left after 24 hours, nor could they get to or from work, school, no supplies getting to the island but worst of all medical evacuation could only be performed by helicopter. When are the politicians who we vote to run the country on our behalf going to do the job they are paid for instead of bickering and arguing amongst themselves? Peter Grove, Sandstone Point

The Bribie Islander

Dear Editor, Bribie Island residents helped contribute to providing 762,948 meals to Aussies in need for Woolworths Foodbank Winter Appeal We would like to say a big thank you to Bribie Island residents for their incredible support of Foodbank this winter through the Woolworths winter fundraising appeal. With demand for food relief outstripping supply, you have significantly helped warm-up winter for some of the most vulnerable people in the community. 16 years and 16 million kilograms of food donated that is the equivalent to over 30 million meals donated to Foodbank by Woolworths since our partnership began in 2002. And this winter, thanks to Woolworths customers, that number is growing even larger, providing much needed help to some of the 3.2 million Australians who require food relief assistance each year. By generously adding so many $2 Foodbank tokens to shopping trolleys, Bribie Island residents helped us reach our national goal of providing 762,948 meals to Australian families in need. With each $2 token enabling Foodbank to provide four warming meals, Queensland contributed 235,468 meals. With 40% of food insecure households families having

dependent children, the funds raised during the winter appeal have helped struggling families make ends meet. Thank you once again for your generosity at a time of year when families most desperately need assistance. Woolworths’ aim of supporting the growing need for hunger relief and helping feed millions of Australians in need would not have been possible without your support. Regards Clint Freeman, Woolworths Banksia Beach and Woolworths Bribie Island Group Manager,

Dear Editor, BRIBIE HI-RISE There have been a number of comments recently in the press about the five-storey block of units being erected just over the island bridge. It’s a pity these comments are a little late as there are already five, six and even seven-storey buildings on the island mainly on the surf side. Likening the developments as being similar to Redcliffe is a bit hash as they have far greater height requirements. At least one thing about Redcliffe is they have TWO bridges as well as a land connection. Not isolated like Bribie Island. Peter Grove, Sandstone Point
