A part of the beautiful Christmas lights display at 90 Foxtail Crescent in Banksia Beach.
THE SIXTEENTH YEAR By Neil Wilson
A
bout this time in 2017, I introduced readers to a Banksia Beach couple who are absolutely addicted to sharing their love of Christmas lights with all who take the time to visit their home at 90 Foxtail Crescent. When I called to see them recently, Noela and Ted Knight were busy setting up their lighting display and they told me that 2018 is the sixteenth year that they have lit their home up for
the festive season and the third time at their current address. The couple readily admits that they don’t have a clue as to how many lights there are in the display and, whilst they say that there is no room for more, Ted did tell me that they were going to check out the upcoming Aldi sale to buy just a few more lights. As well as decorating their front yard with beautiful lighting, the Knights spend many hours setting up a wonderful Christmas theme

in their garage and they explained that the process usually begins about six weeks before they open their display to the public on December 1st from 7 pm until 9 pm. ‘We used to finish on Christmas Eve but because there are people telling us that they want to show their families that are visiting for Christmas, we now open on the night of the 25th as well,’ Ted pointed out. Arguably one of the most popular in the area, the display at 90 Foxtail Crescent in Banksia Beach attracts an astounding

number of visitors during December and last year saw an estimated two thousand people come to enjoy the results of Noela and Ted’s efforts. Whilst the couple do not expect any financial reward for their dedication to keeping the spirit of Christmas alive, there will be a collection box beside the display and, as it was last year, the money that is collected will be donated to the local Vietnam Veterans Association to assist them with the work that they do within the community.

t is very seldom that I only use one word as the title of an article but, to be perfectly honest, I can not think of any other word to adequately describe the recent combined exhibition by both the
Bribie Island Watercolour Working Together Group and the Thursday Painters Working Together Group. On display in the Mathew Flinders Gallery earlier this month, the works of the two groups reflected a diverse
cross-section of Australian animal and bird life as well as examples of the country’s landscapes. The Watercolour Working Together Group meets at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre and the co-ordinator Gail Greening can be contacted on 3410 8794. The Thursday Painters Working Together Group meets, as the name suggests, on Thursdays at the Arts Centre and anyone who would like to find out more about that group should
call Maureen Gough on 3408 2716 or Bev Power on 3408 7882. The Bribie Island Community Arts Centre is on Sunderland Drive at Banksia Beach and is open each day except Monday from 10 am. They can be contacted by phone on 3408 9288.

he members of the Banksia Garden Club are dedicated to playing an active role within the local community and as such are often committing the funds that are made from plant sales to worthwhile causes whenever the opportunity presents itself. Over the last two months, the club has collected the takings from a craft stall and plant sales at their meetings and these funds will be donated to the drought relief appeal. Another example of the club’s generosity was when, at the Garden Club’s November meeting, President Desley Horsfall handed over a cheque for
$500 to Bribie Respite Centre Service Manager Joanne Allison-Chouw. The amount donated to the Respite Centre was the result of plant sales made when other garden clubs visited the local club. The Banksia Garden Club is a well-run organisation which has become popular with local green thumbs and club meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre complex. Anyone who would like further information on the club’s activities is welcome to either come along to a meeting or call Desley Horsfall on 3408 8470.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY
IS IT SOMETHING IN THE AIR?
By Neil Wilson
W
hilst those who are a part of the Bribie Island community know, there are so many talented people that live in the area among them, there are many adults and children who are gifted musicians. In fact, following the recent successes of the
Banksia Beach State School bands at Music Fest, some outsiders have been left wondering whether there is something special about the air at Bribie Island that stimulates such wonderful talent. School Performing Arts Manager Martin O’Callaghan
08 | thebribieislander.com.au |
The Bribie Islander
told me that the contingent of students from Banksia Beach State School was the largest to attend the event which was held at Iona College. ‘The two hundred students that we took to Music Fest made up the Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced bands and each of those bands were recognised for their talents,’ said Martin. ‘The Beginners Band received a Gold Award whilst both the Intermediate and Advanced Bands took out the Platinum Awards,’ he added. The achievements of the school’s bands have been consistent for some time and an example of this is that only a short time prior to their victory at Music Fest, the Advanced Band were
winners of the St. Columbans Music Spectacular for the sixth year in a row. I guess that it really doesn’t matter whether it’s something in the air or just the result of total dedication by all those involved, knowing that these young people are a part of our community makes one proud to be a Bribie Islander.

The restoration work is progressing slowly
In The
Air
with the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre and BEAUFORT A9-141 By Neil Wilson
B
uilt in Australia by the Department of Aircraft Production under licence to the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Bristol Beaufort was arguably one of the most important aircraft employed in the defence of Australia during World War II and became known as the “Workhorse of the RAAF” in the South Pacific region.
Sadly, there are none of these beautiful aircraft still flying anywhere in the world but, thanks to the dedicated effort of the volunteers at AAHC (Australian Aviation Heritage Centre), DAP Beaufort A9141 will one day take to the skies again. The twin-engine Bristol Beaufort was designed to be used mainly in a
reconnaissance role and as a torpedo bomber and was manned by a crew of four. As well as being capable of carrying torpedos and/ or bombs, the aircraft was equipped with two wingmounted machine guns and a number of other machine guns in both the nose and turrets along the fuselage. A9-141 went into service with the RAAF in 1942 and was operated by bot 7 and 14 Squadrons as well as being used for flying training at 1 O.T.U. and 5 O.T.U. A crash at Tocumwal in January of 1944 signalled the end of its service. A9-141 was bought by aviation enthusiast and AAHC founder Ralph Cusack in 1983 and brought back to Queensland where the restoration work commenced in 1984 at a building in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra. ’I
decided to take on the project of restoring a Beaufort after I had read that there were none flying,’ said Ralph. ‘Also, someone said that I couldn’t do it and at first, we thought that it would not take much to get her flying. How wrong we were,’ he added. In 2007, the Beaufort was relocated to Caboolture and, after a time in what is now the TAVAS hangar and another short period away from the Caboolture, A9-141 was finally moved to its current home in Hangar 104 where restoration work is progressing. ‘Our biggest problem with the work on the Beaufort is funding and we are having to do it on a shoestring budget,’ Ralph told me. ‘At times we take on a bit of contract work such as restoring the Bofors gun for the Bribie RSL. We have also received a few donations from some generous people and it all helps but restoration work is expensive and we have to be precise with everything that we do,’ he said. Ralph told me that, as well as A9-141, AAHC is also restoring other aircraft including a Westland Wessex helicopter along with a Caribou and he said that he has even had a DC2,

a Percival Proctor and a Wirraway and others in the past. ‘Although I learned to fly, I enjoy fixing them more,’ he remarked. At present, there are twenty-five volunteers who spend time working on the restoration of the Beaufort and whilst they are slowly achieving their goal, they are always keen to welcome new volunteers. Ralph pointed out that everyone has their own skill set and although some have no experience with aircraft, their help will not go astray. While on the subject of volunteers, Ralph said that Len Brock, who has helped with the restoration work at AAHC turns 100 soon and he was actually an inspector at the factory where the Beaufort was
built. When DAP Beaufort A9-141 finally takes to the air as the only flying Beaufort in the world, it will be a proud moment for all who have contributed to her restoration and considering Ralph’s statement that he intends to work until he drops, I can only imagine what his next major project will be. If anyone would like to find out more about either the AAHC, the restoration work of A9-141 or about becoming a volunteer, the number to call is 5495 4951 and the email address is info@aahcqld.org.au. AAHC is situated in Hangar 104 at 157 McNaught Road in Caboolture.

CHARITY
THEY DON’T
FORGET By Neil Wilson
A
s Christmas draws nearer and the stores are crowded with shoppers who are in search of that special gift for a loved one, there are some who, due to any of a number of circumstances, are unable to afford a present for those that they care about and this, of course, means that not everyone will get a present this Christmas. In order to lessen the impact of this very sad situation, the team at TAVAS (The Australian Vintage Aviation Society) have joined forces with Caboolture Community Action, an organisation which helps those who are experiencing financial hardship and people at risk of becoming
homeless, to make sure that these people will get a present at Christmas. TAVAS co-founder Nathalie Gochel explained to me that, from when the society opened the doors to the public in June, giving back to the community has always been a central part of their operation. ‘People. Especially the young, don’t forget that it is Christmas just because the family is experiencing difficulties and in an effort to help Caboolture Community Action provide presents to all that they support, we are asking for help,’ said Nathalie. ‘We would like people to buy a gift, wrap it and label it with gender and age, and place it under the Christmas tree that
is in our hangar (Hangar 106) on McNaught Road at Caboolture Airfield. This will finish on December 15th and the gifts will then go to CCA for distribution,’ she added. Nathalie said that apparently there is always a shortage of gifts that are suitable for teenagers so presents for adolescent males and females are a priority. Gifts for female
and male adults are also required. This is an opportunity to brighten the Christmas period for those who are struggling and, if anyone would like to know more, they can either call TAVAS on 5495 7069 from Wednesday to Sunday or Nathalie Gochel on 0421 799 431. MEET OUR VERY OWN “MISS WORLD” By Anne Matthews Public Relations Director Bribie Rotary

e may chuckle to ourselves about the standard beauty pageant contestant’s answer to such questions as “If you could get world leaders to work together and achieve one thing, what would it be? Every one of those stunningly beautiful contestants answers “world peace”. Indeed even Gracie Hart (aka “Miss
Congeniality”) answers “harsher punishment for parole violators” but quickly adds “... and, world peace”. In all our wishes and prayers, “world peace” gets a mention, along with health, wealth and happiness. However, to many, the concept of World Peace is a mere pipe dream. Currently, conflict and violence displace millions of people each year, with half of those killed in conflict being children, and 90 percent civilians. It is worth

stopping to think about this staggering figure! 90 percent of the deaths are civilians! Rotary International lists Peace and Conflict Resolution as one of its main causes. Through service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, Rotary members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, which include poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. Each year, Rotary pays for 100 of the world’s most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centres. Through training, study, and practice, Rotary Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution. Many go on to careers in national governments the military, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and World Bank. Presently, our Club is hosting Raina Fox who is studying for a Masters Degree in Peace and Conflict at the University of Queensland, which is a designated Rotary Peace Centre. Raina is an inspirational young woman from Minnesota USA and has dedicated her life to working for “world peace”. She says that peace is not just about the absence of wars but also about the absence of injustice. Raina’s aim is to support people who are leading work in their own communities
towards durable peace and human rights for people of all social identities. She is a strong advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 SDGs are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. As part of the degree, Raina has to complete an internship over the academic year break and has chosen to do this internship at the United Nations Development Program in Amman Jordan. Raina told me she likes to

ask what people need rather than say this is what we are going to give you. Perhaps a good rule for us all. Last year’s Peace Fellow, Laurie Smolenski, completed her Master’s degree and is now working at the Institute for Economics and Peace; a World think tank dedicated to developing metrics to analyse peace and to quantify its economic benefits. We wish Raina and all our Peace Fellows every success in their careers and in achieving “world peace”.

n 1992, the United Nations General Assembly sanctioned December 3rd as International Day of People with a Disability and proclaimed the day as a means of increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Each year, the day has a specific theme and is celebrated throughout the world with a variety of events. The theme for 2018 is “Empowering People with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality” and on Monday 3rd December, that theme will come to life at the Bribie Island Rotary and Spinal Life Afternoon Tea at the Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club when those who attend will be treated to a Fashion Parade for all Abilities. As well as the fashion parade, there will be art and craft auctions and I’m told that the art auction will include a number of unique pieces and feature Paul Constable Calcutt. Many local businesses have generously donated items for the auction and Spinal Life member Sue Ellen has made and donated some beautiful craft items. Entertainment for the afternoon will be provided by local well-known artist, Shane Kells who in the past has dedicated many hours to community work as an entertainer, raising money for worthy causes. Shane, aka Kellsy, has recently been touring
with Phil Emmanuel and Strangebrew in the “Back to Basics” tour and he reckons if there is one thing that he has learned over his years of performing, it is that you

have to be adaptable. He describes his one-man show as being suitable for all ages, including soft songs for older folk as well as blues, rock and roll and even a bit of heavy rock Spinal Life Australia Bribie Island Network Community Connector Bill Peacock told me that all proceeds from the event will go to Rotary’s “World’s Greatest Meal to End Polio Now”. ‘We are hoping that this event will raise muchneeded funds,’ said Bill. ‘In light of the polio outbreak
in PNG, we have to be extra vigilant as it is only a plane trip away,’ he added. Anyone wishing to attend this special event which commences at 2 pm can purchase tickets ($35.00 each) now by depositing payment into the Rotary Club of Bribie Island account at the Bank of Queensland. DO YOU SNORE OR FEEL TIRED DURING THE DAY? With CPAP DIRECT CPAP Direct Managing Director Bryce Perron used to sleep for eight hours a night but always felt tired.
“Quality sleep is more important that quantity,” he said. “A diagnostic test showed that I stopped breathing 28 times per hour, so it’s no wonder I felt wrecked the next day”. “After my first night on CPAP, I lost the need for an afternoon nap at 2pm”. So what is CPAP? Short for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, it provides a steady stream of pressurised air while you sleep which stops the throat from becoming blocked and waking people up. The CPAP machine features a
quiet motor and filter system to pressurize and humidify the air, a hose and mask that delivers the air to the nose and mouth. The newest CPAP devices are compact, easy to travel with and have many battery options. Mr Perron said sleep was something precious to everyone. He said that we spent a third of our lives in bed and the environment we sleep in has a direct impact on our body’s ability to heal and regenerate. MSM MIRACLE
T
here is a doctor in Korea who became popular for his effectiveness in treating cancer patients; amazingly his main remedies are MSM powder and pure vitamin C powder. So I have some more research about MSM and it seems like a miraculous product. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is 34% Sulphur, 34% Oxygen, 26% carbon and 6% hydrogen bonds. MSM is high in sulphur helps boost glutathione. Glutathione is present in our cells but it declines, as we grow older. MSM’s role in increasing the production of the antioxidant glutathione adds to its benefit for degenerative conditions such as .Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. MSM is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory and detoxifying to the body. MSM has been used to treat a number of conditions such as headache, fibromyalgia, arthritis, back pain, muscle soreness, sclerosis, whiplash, tennis elbow and joint high blood pressure, allergies, joint injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome. MSM is excellent for dissolving unwanted calcium deposit in the joints, which often causes joint stiffness. MSM is known for releasing of metal accumulation in the body, it even passes through the blood-brain barrier, which assists in flushing out toxins build-up and cleans the harmful metal from the brain. MSM is also a commonly used for decalcifying the pineal gland and may be helpful for dissolving old scar tissue. It helps to improve metabolism
and immune functions. According to some study MSM at high doses is an effective cancer treatment for even advanced cancer patients because of it’s ability to get rid of lactic acid in the bloodstream and kill microbes in the bloodstream. MSM is an excellent addition to chemotherapy, it will help the chemotherapy target the cancer cells and will make the chemotherapy more effective and protect of the non-cancerous cells. MSM is also an excellent source of sulphur, known as the ‘beauty mineral’ Sulphur provides support for strong, thick lustrous hair, a complexion free from blemishes and wrinkles and nails that are strong and promotes detoxification. Sulphur is directly linked to antioxidant glutathione, irregular metabolism and insulin functions, in addition to obesity and weakness in the joints. The bio-available sulphur provided by MSM produces generous quantities of keratin and collagen, both of which are essential for healthy nails, hair and skin. MSM is available both in capsule and powder form Bribie Simply Healthy; the price varies according to the brands, they are within the reasonable price range. The further information available about MSM ‘The miracle of MSM, the Natural solution for pain.’ By Dr. Stanley Jacob’s. Indulge yourself with a therapeutic massage treatment. mental and physical fatigue, and you will feel wonderful! Releases headaches, neck and back pain, reduces stress. Promotes therapeutic, healing, relaxing and revitalizing. ‘Massage Therapy’ is a holistic procedure that affects all system of the body such as the digestive system, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and endocrine and nervous systems. Massage can release the tension and allow the body’s own energy to heal itself. HICAPS and Gift voucher is available from the shop. EFT/Emotion Code Therapy. My name is Heenam Kim and I am an EFT therapist. A stressed middle-aged woman walked into the shop a few months ago. She was stressed to the max with her mentally challenged 18 years old daughter. Even though her daughter was the one with a problem, in this situation the mother’s stress was much grater than the daughter’s. Therefore I would say the mother was the patient. She had many health problems but one of the most difficulties in her life was having itchy skin. There was nothing, which would release her itchiness. She would scratch her arms in every 2,3 minutes. I believe in many cases we are ill in pain due to emotional imbalance. There is a new compelling evidence to believe we don’t inherit DNAs, we inherit emotions,
which means we handed down the programs to think and feel certain ways. This influences our DNA pattern. It is well explained a book called ‘Biology of Belief’ by Prof. Bruce Lipton. I often describe these phenomena as an emotional virus. Once we were injected with emotional viruses (stress/trauma) the virus would stay in our energy field and whenever something happens it would trigger the virus to activate and cause the problem in our body. Combining EFT with Emotion code is effective way to release these trapped emotions. So we had three sessions to release her emotional trauma in order to improve her wellbeing. The miraculous difference before the session and after was she stopped scratching her skin! So far she was much happier than before. Please come and see Kim, if you have any queries.

rom when the very first “Entertainers of the Island” series appeared in the April/May 2017 issue of The Mini Bribie Islander, I have written about many talented entertainers including “Wings of Fleetwood” (the very first of the series), “The Plumbdogs” and “The Ukulele Strummers”, each of them well known among the music lovers of our community. As a complete coincidence, our “Entertainer of the Island” for this issue just happens to be a member of each of them Keith Haigh pointed out that it all began because a number of his relations
were accomplished musicians and it was after hearing them playing their various instruments and getting together for family singalongs while he and his parents were visiting them during the holidays that he knew where he was going. ’That was a big influence for me when I was only about four or five,’ Keith said. ‘Then I heard the Mary Ford and Les Paul song “How High the Moon” and I used to sing it a lot. That really made me want to be a musician,’ he recalled. From when Keith’s mum bought him a guitar in 1966, and he received lessons from Vic Dean, Keith’s musical career went from strength to strength. Although he

continued to study classical for a period of ten years, as a lad he got together with three other budding musos and their parents used to arrange gigs for them. ‘We used to get work playing at private functions such as BBQs and we were paid one dollar each,’ Keith explained. ‘Then we began playing at a garage outside Garden City of a Saturday morning and we would get bookings from that,’ he added. As time went on, Keith teamed up with a piano accordion player and used to play at some of the country dances around the area. It was at this point that reality saw him become an apprentice baker and, after
his employer closed down, he found employment with Arnotts and remained there for a period of four years. By this time, his passion for all things musical took over and, as well as working in a Brisbane music store, he began to pass his talent on to others as a teacher. Being an obviously talented musician, Keith plays and teaches a number of instruments including guitar. Bass guitar, banjo and ukulele. He also teaches singing and stage presentation and over the years he has played in a number of bands and also performed as a solo act, moving to our beautiful Island about thirteen years ago.

HIS ANNUS HORRIBILIS
O
n 24th November in 1992 during a speech to mark the fortieth anniversary of her accession to the throne, Queen Elizabeth II described the recent events that included the devastating fire at Windsor Castle as being part of an Annus Horribilis that she will not look back upon with undiluted pleasure. That description immediately came to mind following my recent conversation with David Levick in which he recalled what had happened to him during the first six months of 2018. Dave and his wife Jenny are what can best be described as professional house sitters and whilst living in a very well fitted out RV, make themselves available to look after properties whilst the owners are away. The beginning of 2018 saw the couple taking care of a small cane farm outside of Mackay
A croc’s tail did this to Dave Levick
and Dave told me that the first tragic event of his Annus Horribilis was when he slipped over on wet floor tiles, severely injuring his head as he fell. ‘The following morning, my head was aching badly so I went to Mackay Hospital to get checked out and, after scans and so on they told me that I had a bleed on the brain,’ said Dave. ‘I was told that I would have to go to Townsville to be treated as that was where the nearest neuro-surgeon was. I pointed out that this was not possible as my wife suffers from mild dementia and there was nobody to be there for her,’ he said. This resulted in Dave being monitored at the local hospital before returning home the next day and, soon after his return, an urge to drive the farm ATV into a shed was to result in him once again damaging his head on a low beam as he walked back out. ‘I kept on working around the place but

had bad headaches so I went back to the hospital, only to be told that I had an even more serious bleed on the brain,’ Dave explained. ‘There was no choice this time so, after making arrangements for someone to look after Jenny, went to Townsville courtesy of the Flying Doctor and when I arrived at the hospital, they drilled a twenty -five millimetre hole in my skull into which they inserted twenty-two centimetres of drain tube around my brain,’ he said. With the procedure achieving the desired result Dave’s condition improved to the point where he was only two days away from being able to return to Mackay when a twist of fate saw him trip over a nurse’s chair, fracturing his arm in the process. As well as being disruptive in itself, that accident then presented a whole new problem. ‘In ten days time, myself and a mate who lives in America were booked to go on a fishing safari out of Cairns. And so we had to hurriedly cancel bookings including my mate’s flight over, Dave pointed out. ‘This resulted in us eventually going on the safari during May, me with my arm still in a sling but about seventy-five percent healed,’ he told me. As I sat there wondering how anyone could experience so much bad luck in such a short time, Dave described how, after two days of deep sea fishing, the pair then joined up with a guide who took them fishing in a remote river system near Innisfail. ‘On the second day, we launched the boat in a little creek and, after a good few hours of catching Spanish Mackerel and some Barramundi, we made our way back to the ramp. Because the ramp was a narrow area between two big rocks, the guide said that
Arriving in Mackay after the stint in Townsville Hospital
we should get off the boat onto the rocks and then help him to get the boat back on the trailer,’ recalled Dave. ‘ My mate Chris jumped off onto a rock and, as I tried to do the same, I grabbed an overhanging branch to steady myself but it wasn’t attached to a tree and I fell into the water up to my neck. With the guide yelling out for me to get the #@** out of the water and Chris starting to drag me out, there was a big splash where I was a second before and we were confronted by a big crocodile,’ he said with a bit of a shudder. Dave told me that, as he was being dragged out by his mate, and with the croc intent on making a meal of him, he kicked at its head and missed with the beast snapping its jaws shut in between his legs. ‘The croc then spun around, dragging its tail over my head causing some damage to my face. They eventually got me out and kept throwing rocks at the croc until it gave up and went away. All I could say when it was over was, “Gee their breath stinks”,’ Dave said. When I caught up with Dave and Jenny, they were relaxing at a house sit in Ningi and, although the unlucky events of this year are now behind him, I reckon that this will definitely not be a year that Dave Levick will look back on with undiluted pleasure.

REAL ESTATE IS IN THEIR BLOOD
F
or Debbie and Brett Boettcher, who are newcomers to the Bribie Island real estate scene, it is a case of transferring their very impressive property career skills to the new place they are proud to call home. Hailing from Ipswich the genial couple has an impressive background working in the real estate industry with more than twenty years of shared experience and a generational family pedigree in the property game to boot. “Real estate is in our blood. My father started his real estate career in 1972, two of my brothers have been agents since 1990 and my son has been involved in real estate for almost twenty years and is currently ranked in the
top one percent of agents in Queensland,” Brett proudly says of his lineage. While the couple has lived on Bribie for the past eight months they have had a long association with the island as weekend and holiday visitors. “We simply fell in love with Bribie and now that our grandchildren have grown we felt the time was right to uproot ourselves from Ipswich and put down new roots here on Bribie,” said Debbie. Brett and Debbie explain that they took some time looking around the real estate market before settling on the Industry Award winning NGU as their franchise real estate agency of choice. As NGU agents they will be seeking to sell
vendor properties on Bribie and the nearby mainland suburbs. “In our opinion, NGU offers us the best opportunity to help our clients sell their homes,” said Brett. Brett and Debbie both agree that NGU’s approach to supplying their agents with the very best in vendor marketing tools such as professional photography, videography, online marketing and signage were key to their decision in joining the group. “At the end of the day it is all about being able to negotiate the correct price on the property that pleases both the seller and the buyer that makes a real estate transaction possible,” he said. “The superior marketing support
that we receive from NGU allows us to do our job more effectively on behalf of our vendors in finding the right buyers.” Both now regard themselves as Bribie converts and have been spreading the word far and wide about what a beautiful island paradise it is, which will come as no surprise to local Islanders. “We already have friends and acquaintances back in Ipswich who are asking us to find them a house on Bribie that they can call home or purchase as a weekender. We just need the property listings so we can match the buyer to the seller ” said Brett. And given the recent near 40-degree temperatures in their former hometown, an expected exodus of Ipswichians to the cooler climes of Bribie is definitely on the cards if Brett and Debbie have their way. So if you have a house you want to list give them a call.

MEET the Volunteers BRIBIE ISLAND COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE By Neil Wilson
KAY KOINA As the second in this series of articles about the wonderful volunteers who give their time to keep the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre operating like a well-oiled machine, we meet someone who describes herself as a “Jack of All Trades” where art is concerned. Kay Koina first became acquainted with the Arts Centre after moving here from Brisbane three years ago and offered her services as a volunteer when she joined the Contemporary Arts Practices Group. Kay explained that she has been interested in art from when she was in kindy. ‘Rather than getting my face stuck in the sandpit, I
preferred to stay inside at the art table,’ said Kay. ‘I used to get all the butcher’s paper and crayons and draw. My mum encouraged me a bit and I used to send my drawings into the Courier Mail, winning about two shillings,’ she recalled. In what seems to be a normal situation in people’s lives, Kay lost touch with her creative side as she concentrated with her life and she said that it was only when she moved to the Atherton Tablelands that her interest returned. ‘I became interested in wood carving and the area had an abundance of timber for that,’ Kay told me. ‘I mainly worked with Camphor Laurel but occasionally I used one of the other types of beautiful timber that is

found there,’ she added. Whilst Kay now enjoys painting with watercolours and acrylics as well as oils, she has also developed a passion for printmaking and she remarked that she is especially keen on the processes involved in cyanotype and linotype. She is a member of the U3A Printmakers and also the Art Tarts and her works are often found among the pieces that are featured in exhibitions by these groups. As a volunteer, Kay’s main areas of responsibility are as one of those who man and the reception desk and she is also a member of the display that arranges the works within the Mathew Flinders Gallery and other parts of the centre. The Bribie Island Community Arts Centre is a venue for many activities and as such, is regarded as one of the focal points within the community. The Mathew Flinders Gallery

hilst art in itself can be any one of many mediums, there is probably no form of
art which can be said to feature as many processes as printmaking which is a means of producing multiple impressions of an article that was first
invented by Chinese artists centuries before it became established during the German Renaissance era of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The art of printmaking has become popular among many people with an urge to be creative and that was clearly demonstrated at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre recently when Wendy Luscombe gave her artist’s talk as the representative of the U3A Printmakers. who are the “Artists of the Month” for November. After being introduced to the audience by Artist of the Month co-ordinator, Debra Mieth, Wendy began her talk by telling everyone about the group’s background and expressing thanks to the Printmakers’ tutor, Cheryl Mortimer, who she described as someone who is extremely patient when organising activities. ‘Cheryl sometimes describes that job

as being similar to herding cats,’ Wendy said. She also explained that when she was elected to give the Artists Talk, she couldn’t object because she wasn’t even present. Wendy told those present that the theme for the group’s display, “Shades of Grey” is based on the principle that life is not black and white and there are many shades of grey in between. She pointed out that the prints in the display explore that idea and are a reflection of the

During her talk, Wendy described some of the processes used in the various styles of printmaking that include monoprint, collagraphy, collage and screen printing and she remarked that the result when doing a print can often be pleasantly surprising. The “Shades of Grey” exhibition was originally created last year to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of U3A and Wendy said that it involved each artist doing two copies of a face and

then adding to it, with their own style of processing and when I inspected the faces, I was impressed by how the artists had used a variety of commonly available materials that included steel wool and plastic shopping bags to create the different shades of grey. In closing what was a very interesting talk, Wendy
said that in January 2019, some of the printmakers will be exhibiting their works as part of the “Masters and Apprentices” series of exhibitions in the Mathew Flinders Gallery. ‘Cheryl is the Master and we are the Apprentices,’ she told everyone. The U3A Printmakers ‘Artist of the Month” exhibition will remain on display at the Arts Centre until the end of November and I seriously recommend taking the time to check it out. SPECIAL ADVERTISING PROMOTION
INDUSTRY FIRST TECHNOLOGY WITH 2019 MODELS AT BRISBANE SEA-DOO S ummer is almost upon us, and things are really starting to heat up here at Brisbane Sea-Doo and CanAm. Based on Brisbane’s Northside at Zillmere, we are a Platinum BRP Centre, and have been servicing the needs of our customers since 1985. Over the years, we have certainly seen many changes in the industry and in the range of available personal watercraft, with a focus on larger, more stable models which are well suited to open water riding. BRP continue to dominate the watercraft industry, with their latest range of Sea Doo’s once again featuring industry first technology
and accessories. The new ST3 platform sets the industry benchmark for stability and control, and is available on seven models across the GTX, RXT and Wake Pro ranges. This new platform also offers consumers maximum comfort with a smart reconfigurable rear seat, a manufacturer installed waterproof Bluetooth audio system and improved storage. 2019 models are already in store, and we are particularly excited to introduce the innovative Fish Pro ski, the first and only watercraft built for fishing, equipped with
features that allow you to explore all fishing locations, get closer to the action, and experience fishing like never before. Sea Doo’s Fish Pro ski comes standard with:** Fishing cooler ** Garmin Navigation and Fish Finder ** 70 litre fuel tank ** Trolling mode ** Fishing bench seat ** Extended rear platform ** Direct access front storage Sea Doo’s new Fish Pro offers a new perspective
on fishing, and with it’s low maintenance and ease of launching, is ideal for use around Bribie and its surrounding waterways. Here at Brisbane Sea-Doo and Can-Am, our aim is to provide an enjoyable buying experience, which includes organised rides throughout South East QLD. Visit us in store or call to chat to one of our friendly staff about how to get you and your family out on the water this Summer.

n our way from Broome to Darwin, we decided to embark on some new stopovers and finally do some touristy things! We were planning to spend a couple of nights at the Bungle Bungle bush camp, located between Fitzroy crossing and Kununurra, from where you can venture out to see the Bungle Bungle mountain range and gorges. The last powered site was snapped up just before our arrival, leaving us with no aircon for the next few days. As I am a very generous being, I volunteered to stay behind making sure the guinea pig wouldn’t die of heat stroke. This also meant that I would miss out on being shaken to the core on a two hour, 50 km corrugated trip on a very bumpy dirt road… However, I agreed to hop into the Dodge for a twentyminute trial run to check out the first river crossing. When we finally found a spot to pull over, losing our thongs in the mud while walking the last few meters, we were confronted with a vision that left us speechless…The river

Episode 19 - On the Way to Darwin bank was littered with halfburied car parts accompanied by people, who were forcefully camping out on the side of the river because their car did not make it past that first hurdle. (never mind all the others) It turned out that up to five cars can get stranded there daily!!! Some even left behind for good, as occasionally insurance companies refuse to pay for the towing and often it’s the young backpackers that run
standstill on the other side of the creek. Ginger sprang right into action, handing out progress notes to passing vehicles so they could drop them off for Mummy at the caravan park, while Richard tried to work out what was wrong with the masterpiece of a car. Multiple passers-by stopped to offer help and to take the ‘ note in a bottle ‘ …. and then out of nowhere a car approached and a

Richard was positive as always, telling Ginger that it’s not the car but just a part of it, to which Ginger replied – ‘Yes Daddy but the car is totally made out of parts!‘ Once again our Dodge the Show Pony was in the bad books! To top it off Richard was supposed to be back at work in Brisbane, which had to be postponed as we ended up being stranded for nearly two weeks!! This meant serious rationing of our food, sharing just an egg, one tomato and crisps for each lunch, as there was just a little office fridge at the van park, selling ice Ginger’s break down notes to mum
out of options and money! Nevertheless, Richard and Ginger were on a mission and took off early the next day, equipped with food, water, jackets, blankets and even pens and paper – just in case they got stuck, I thought. Later I was told that Ginger was disappointed they made it through the first creek without a hitch… However adventure soon caught up with them and the car started spitting water, making noises and running hot! Richard with the ‘shiny black impressive Dodge’ was at a loss and decided that they had to turn around, luckily making it back through the deep water, before they came to a

voice said: ‘Are you Richard who studied at Townsville?’ Turned out it was one of Richard’s old house and study mates who now lent a helping hand filling up the car with water every few minutes, enabling the Dodge to crawl back to camp. It took us three days to finally get the huge Dodge loaded onto a big enough truck, which towed it to a mechanic at Kununurra. Turned out to be a worn out water pump spitting the dummy, with a replacement being flown in from who knows where!!
creams, Cola and crisps only. We also run out of juice and bottled water, forced to stick to the brown water that came out of the tap. Never mind that this water was not good enough to clean the Dodge as Richard mentioned earlier… However, we loooved the reinforced relaxation, going for morning exploratory walks and taking a dip in the creek at sunset. Originally the plan was only to stay a couple of nights and therefore we parked the rig under some trees…But now that we were

there for nearly two weeks, we desperately needed some solar power…but we could not move the van as we had no car!!! With hardly any power, no aircon, no TV, no charging, and only a couple of dim lights at night, we were very fond of our functioning fridge on gas protecting our valuable rations from going off…and then…you guessed it?? The fridge died… With all those circumstances the only place where Richard was able to get his work done and phone and computers charged was at the communal tent, where we spent the hottest part of the day, setting up a large table as our office and putting the guinea pig on ice when it got to an unbearable 43 degrees. In comparison, our nightly routine, when the temperatures plummeted, included a trip to the communal fire pit after our ‘dinner’. There the latest arrivals returning from the Bungle Bungles were sharing their experiences, especially how their car made it…or not… One day even a bus tour from Darwin was stranded,

eating ice cream and crisps for a whole day... those buses, are more like tanks than conventional buses and partly to blame for the condition of the road, we were told. But Richard was so peeved with the Dodge breaking down, that he refused to pay $300 per person to go on a bus trip, which meant that Ginger and Richard actually never saw the Bungle Bungles... However, not all was doom and gloom, dusty and hot, as luckily we were close to the amenities, which had no roof… but against all odds, I grew fond of the loo with a view! Here I do need to mention the most obliging, helpful Firepit and office tent
caravan park staff who in the end let us use their tiny office fridge, offered me a job, and tried to get a free seat for Richard and Ginger on the bus (which was booked out). And Yayyyy they also brought us the news that the Dodge was fixed! But we were not happy! We did not want to leave!!! We had found the outback vibe!!! We grew so fond of the place, even the harsh conditions, the rationed food and the loo with a view that we had to stay just one more night! Our last chance to stare at the starry sky, while

philosophising around the fire pit, over why we always seem to want more, when in reality less brings more happiness. But all good things have to come to an end, and if the Dodge is willing, then we will be embarking to Kununurra in the next episode of The Long Way Round To Bribie!

Care
Storm Phobias
Many dogs are panicky during storms, and it worsens slightly with each storm. I have seen dogs that eventually become so panicked they hurl themselves off balconies, or literally run the skin off their pads.
Bacon? Is that bacon? Is it?
This is dangerous, selfdestructive behaviour and impossible to cure and difficult to treat. While in a panicked state, the brain is not functioning normally and affected pets learn to become more sensitive to the feared stimulus (the storm) rather than less sensitive (which is what should occur, if the brain were functioning as it should). Curiously, storm phobic pets becoming deaf will eventually learn to ignore storms. Do your storm phobic pet a favour and medicate them during storms to prevent them worsening.

Dear Editor In the past, it has been difficult enough to gain access to the heated indoor therapy pool but it is now almost impossible, requiring the other elderly, sick, injured and disabled patrons to swim before 9 am or in a window of 45 mins at 6 pm when most are retiring for the evening. Weekends are worse as the new managers now open the pool to the public including unsupervised children who have been known to accidentally kick or collide with an injured swimmer. The truncated hours are causing overcrowding and distress amongst Bribie’s elderly who use the pool regularly. What was the original intention of building this pool? As Bribie is a retirement community, I assume it was for the elderly? With over 1000 new residents over 55 to move
into the community at Solana and Gemlife, I would think the pressure on this facility will only increase. If it is a question of economics, then one therapy user at $4 per session three times a week equates to one learn to swim at $12 per session once a week surely? And therapy swimmers swim all year round, not just in school terms. Will Council build a dedicated learn to swim facility (they only use 1/4 of the pool but it is closed to everyone) and support the island’s most vulnerable but long-term ratepayers many of who probably helped fund its construction? At the very least will they allow better access for therapy including excluding children and non-physical therapy patrons for at least some hours each weekend? A Jones, Banksia Beach
