in a small tinny, who disappeared soon after the search was activated and were in fact safe on land and that they had only climbed the beacon for something to do, then returned to their boat. Congratulations to all crews and radio operators involved. Whilst finishing this rescue, Energex Bribie One received another call for assistance with a vessel spotted on the surf beach at Woorim. VMR Bribie members attended the scene to discover no persons on board or in the vicinity. With waves reaching 2.5 metres in the bay, grave concerns were held for the occupants of this vessel and another search was arranged by Water Police together with Energex Bribie One. Water police finally made contact with the owner of the boat only to find out that they had deliberately beached the boat on a return trip from Tangalooma as the seas were getting too big. Unfortunately they did not have the presence of mind to advise anyone after beaching their boat and decided to head home.
Both situations involved quite a number of volunteers and police personnel manoeuvring their vessels in high seas during a storm and placing their own lives at risk in the process. These situations can be avoided by using a little commonsense and ensuring you keep the authorities advised of any unusual situations.
RESCUE WITH A DIFFERENCE A rescue with a difference for our crews on Saturday morning 17TH Dec 2016, a member of the public called VMR Bribie to report a wallaby swimming in the canals and unable to get out. The crew with the help of some residents managed to get the wallaby on the boat and off to the vet who will be sending it off to Australia Zoo for some R & R. A NEW YOU FOR NEW YEAR (Or Not)
by Neil Wilson
Some of us will and some of us won’t but I reckon that most of us at one time or another have made a New Year resolution. I suppose that the big question to be asked about these once a year promises to ourselves about self improvement is, do any of us ever keep them? New Year resolutions can be many and varied and can relate to personal health, bad habits, employment and even family situations. Probably the most commonly made (and broken) is to give up smoking and, whilst not actually the result of a New Year resolution, yours truly hopes to have achieved that goal by the time this goes to print. Another one that I hear with regularity is, ‘I’m going on a diet so I can lose some weight.’ Well, I suppose after the excess indulgence associated with the festive season, there’s probably no better time but sadly, what seemed like a good idea at the time often becomes all too hard with the realisation that no diet is very
successful without a regular exercise regime. Other very often made resolutions include promises to be nicer to people, to not work so many hours, to spend more time with family and so the list goes on. I am suddenly reminded about the single bloke I know who made a resolution to not spend so much time at the pub with his mates so he could save money. Although this is a promise that he kept admirably but he then proceeded to stock up with beer so he could have a few while watching television each night. The result was approximately the same spend but with no one to talk to. Although I can honestly say that, no, I will not be making any New Year resolutions, and yes, part of the reason for that is the fact that the chances of me succeeding are admittedly very remote, I sincerely hope that anyone who does make a resolution is able to keep it and I offer my sincere congratulations on your efforts.

support, succumbed to her injuries. Her mum Nicole and father Jesse have two other children, Chelsea and Jaxson and, due to Jaxson having some disabilities, Jesse has to fulfill the role of stay at home care giver. Nicole has been a much loved and valued employee at Happy’s Café but due to the tragic recent events, has not been able to return to work. In the months leading up to the passing of her daughter, Nicole has been the victim of a bank account hacker and had all her savings removed from her account. As if this was’nt enough to go through, she also was involved in an accident that resulted in both vehicles being written off with no insurance. Though none of us can truly understand the trauma that this family is suffering, we can show our support for them by way of a donation, even if it’s only five dollars, to one of the many donation points around Bribie. If you prefer, you can donate to the trust account that has been set up and these are the details.
As the Steinhardt family attempt to come to terms with the tragic loss of little Jazmyne late last year, the local community is being asked to show their support for this family in their time of need. Community announcement CRIME STOPPERS CALLS
FOR DONATIONS
On Sunday 11th December Kim Bowers, the president of The Bribie and District woodcrafters Association, presented a cheque for $1500 to the “fight for Ethan fund.” 9 month old Ethan is the youngest of 5 children and was born with a rare brain disease that causes him to have hundreds of seizures a day. He also requires surgery in the near future as his throat doesn’t close off his airway which causes him to choke on fluids and solids. Kim Bowers said that each year the Bribie Woodies choose a local cause to donate money to. Kim said this year “When hearing of Ethan’s condition our membership wanted to donate to Ethan’s cause”. The Bribie Woodies raise funds throughout the year from Bunnings sausage sizzle and other projects. We are in the fortunate position, said Kim of being able to give back to the community where we see a real need. For more information go to www.facebook.com/ FightForEthan
Since 1989, Crime Stoppers Queensland has played a vital role in the arrest of over 33,590 offenders due to information received from members of the community. The organization has become the Queensland public’s most effective tool in the fight to solve crime and has some of the best results per capita in the world. Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and volunteer organization and for the past twenty seven years has been able to operate on government funding and corporate sponsorship but now, due to some funding cutbacks and a call centre that costs over one million dollars annually, they are appealing for added corporate involvement as well as donations from the public. Other statistics that have stemmed from public tip offs to Crime Stoppers include the recovery of eleven million dollars worth of stolen property, the seizure of over $641.8 million worth of drugs, $4.8 million in proceeds of crime seized and the solving of twenty five murders and twenty one attempted murders. These results are the result of the hard working and dedicated volunteers and police officers at the call centre receiving and processing almost one thousand calls every week. ‘The Queensland public trusts us to anonymously and confidentially manage their crime intelligence information,’ said a Crime Stoppers spokesperson.
by Neil Wilson
It is essential that this organization which is so vital to the fight against crime be allowed to operate without the restrictions that lack of sufficient funding would create. So, keeping in mind that at some stage, a tip off to Crime Stoppers by a concerned member of the public will more than likely play a part in maintaining the safety of your community, consider making a donation to help them in their great work. There are several ways that donations can be made. You can SMS ‘’Crime’’ to 0437 371 371 if you wish to donate using your phone, you can log on to www.supportcrimestoppers.com.au and fill out the online form or, if it is more convenient, just call the state administration office on 1300 309355 and provide your credit card details. If you use any of these three options to make a donation, you will be able to receive a receipt and donations over two dollars are tax deductable. However, if a receipt is not required, you can donate direct to a bank account and the details are, Account name: Crime Stoppers Queensland Limited, BSB: 484799, Account Number: 082195165. However much you wish to donate and whichever way you do so, please make sure that Crime Stoppers Queensland can continue to achieve the wonderful results that help keep our community safe. Imagine if they closed for good...

Brisbane Water Police recognised for their efforts
The Brisbane Water Police and Dive Unit have taken out the coveted ‘Best Display’ award for the 2016 Emergency Services Expo that is held at Bribie Island each year. The award was this week presented by the Bribie Island Volunteer Marine Rescue in recognition of the time and support provided by them to help ensure the success of the Expo. The Emergency Services Expo is run by the Bribie Island Volunteer Marine Rescue and provides an opportunity for the public to get up close and personal with the officers and machines that keep the community safe. This year, the Expo attracted exhibitors from various government emergency services, including the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, and the Queensland Ambulance Service. A number of volunteer organisations such as Surf Lifesaving Queensland, the Volunteer Coastguard, and the State Emergency Service also participated with equipment and displays. The Brisbane Water Police arrived in style with the 24 metre patrol vessel ‘W. Conroy’, which anchored overnight near the expo, while the Dive Unit turned up in their impressive dive truck that was very popular with the public. Lucky members of volunteer groups were ferried out to the Conroy on the tactical response vessel ‘C. R. Bagley’ and given a guided tour by water police officers.
Master of the W. Conroy, Sergeant Daniel Moyle said they had an amazing response from the people they took out to the vessel. “Those lucky enough to be selected from their various cadets groups or volunteer organisations got to ride in a genuine tactical response vessel out to the Conroy and receive a tailored tour through the boat. It’s a rare opportunity and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves,” Sergeant Moyle said. The Water Police faced some stiff competition for the award from a Surf Lifesaving Queensland helicopter that put on an impressive water rescue display and a water bombing demonstration that was provided by a fire fighting helicopter. QFES also performed a vehicle rescue display that drew huge crowds. Sergeant Moyle said the Brisbane Water Police are really honoured and surprised to receive recognition for the effort the officers put into making sure everyone had a great day. “We work very closely with the volunteer rescue groups and enjoy helping out at events like these. It gives us a chance to showcase our capabilities to both the volunteers and the community,” Sergeant Moyle said. The Emergency Services Expo is held each October at Bribie Island by the Bribie Island Volunteer Marine Rescue. Entry is free and next year’s Expo promises to be even bigger than ever.

WISHING YOU A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
YOU’RE IMPORTANT TO US
by Neil Wilson

We at The Bribie Islander are well aware of how fortunate we are to have the continued support of each and every one of our many readers and we hold this support in the highest esteem. This being the case, we have a duty as a community magazine to use our pages to provide information that may be helpful with regard to maintaining your health and wellbeing, so with this in mind and the hot weather now here, I thought it relevant to devote this article to some of the ways to survive the heat and avoid the drastic consequences associated with not taking measures to stay cool. Sadly some of us, this writer included, don’t always properly look after ourselves when it comes to minimizing the effects of the summer heat even though we are well aware of what precautions should be taken. Some of the precautions recommended by the health authorities include making sure that you drink more water than normal to avoid dehydration, wear lightweight clothing and a hat, liberally apply sunscreen but stay out of the sun when you can, limit outdoor or strenuous activity to the cooler part of the day if possible and keep windows open to allow a through breeze. Other actions that should always be taken are to check the temperature of playground items before allowing children to use them, check on elderly and vulnerable persons to make sure that they are coping with the heat and to make that your pets have plenty of water and shade. Although to most of us it is something that is hard to comprehend, every year we repeatedly hear about someone leaving an infant or pet in a locked vehicle though thankfully most of the time the situation is reported promptly by a concerned member of the public and the consequences are minimized. It makes you wonder how anyone could be so thoughtless and uncaring! There are three main heat related illnesses that can occur and these are heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps. Everyone should have a basic
awareness of the symptoms related to these and be able to provide the appropriate treatment. Heatstroke symptoms are: extremely hot skin, an altered mental state (sometimes even progressing to a coma) and seizures are also a possibility. The recommended treatment is to move the person into a half sitting position in the shade, call for emergency help immediately (dial 000), spray with water if humidity is below 75 percent or apply ice to neck, armpits or groin if humidity is above 75 percent and do not give aspirin or anything to drink. Heat exhaustion symptoms are sometimes similar to the flu and can include severe thirst, headache, nausea and vomiting. As uncontrolled heat exhaustion can quickly escalate to heat stroke so treatment should begin immediately and the steps to take are to move them to a shaded or air conditioned area, provide water or other non-alcoholic beverages and apply wet towels or if possible, have the subject take a cool shower. Heat cramps are muscle spasms and usually affect the legs or abdomen, often after prolonged physical activity. Workers or athletes are the most often affected by heat cramps and, if symptoms manifest themselves, it is important for the person to avoid any more activity for a number of hours. Recommended treatment is to sit or lie down in the shade, drink cool water or a sports drink, stretch affected muscles and seek medical attention if you have heart problems. Whilst the summer months can be a great time to enjoy the outdoors, your health should always take first place and being just that little bit more aware of the effects of the heat can often ensure that the only difference the heat makes is that we don’t have to wear as many clothes. The team at The Bribie Islander wish to thank you for your support and positive comments and we hope that you continue to enjoy our publications.

THOSE PESKY LITTLE BIRDS
by Neil Wilson
Indian Myna normally lives in open areas such as parks, gardens and cleared agricultural areas. They can breed one to three times each year and their lifespan can range from four years in the wild to a possible twelve years. These birds are quite aggressive and are often known to attack and sometimes kill native birds as well as depriving them of nesting hollows and killing nestlings. They are also proven to have a negative impact on the breeding success of some native parrot species and even evict native parrots fron nest boxes or tree hollows. Indian Mynas can also kill small mammals and remove sugar gliders from hollows. Common Myna Quite often I hear someone say, ‘’I wish I could do something about those damn birds, I can’t get rid of them, they just make a mess and steal the pet’s food all the time.’’ The species of feathered intruder that they are talking about is the Indian Myna, sometimes known as the Common Myna. The Indian Myna was first released in Australia in the 1860’s in an effort to control pests in the Victorian market gardens but, as has been the case with so many of these types of fix-it ideas, there was no positive result. Since that time, this species has thrived and is now to be found in abundance in suburban and agricultural regions along the East coast. Sadly, this very intrusive pest is not a prohibited or restricted invasive animal under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

Another relevant concern related to the behavior of this unwelcome import is their ability to cause damage to fruit, vegetable and cereal crops and they are often responsible for the spread of weeds such as lantana and fireweed. They are a potential reservoir for diseases such as avian malaria and their large nests can cause noise, mess, potential allergies as well as posing a fire hazard. They have been known to swoop and attack people. These birds should be discouraged by depriving them of food sources, chasing them from the yard and disturbing them whenever they try to nest. Apparently a hose is very effective. Some councils are investigating ways to reduce their numbers as reports indicate that the population of the Indian Myna is increasing, especially in south east Queensland. Sounds like the cane toad scenario all over again, doesn’t it?

Businesses are being asked to be aware of a recent increase in counterfeit notes circulating in South East Queensland, including Moreton District. Offenders are targeting businesses, mainly fast food outlets and service stations during busy times and paying for a small purchase with a fake fifty dollar note. Police have launched operation Oscar Commit and have a team of detectives and uniform police are currently investigating the matter. As part of the operation police have charged a 43-year-old Kallangur man with two counts of possessing counterfeit money, uttering counterfeit money and possession of a dangerous drug. He was arrested on November 23 after allegedly been found with 290 counterfeit $50 notes. He is expected to appear at the Caboolture Magistrates Court on January 19. Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Green from Moreton Criminal Investigation Branch said: “Obviously this is a busy time of the year and it is easy to become a target which is unfortunate for what often is a small family business.” “We are aware people can inadvertently receive these notes in change. Check $50 notes and if you think you have been
given a fake $50 note, report it to police. “Information from the public is crucial to this investigation and I urge anyone who has further information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” he said. Tips to spot counterfeit notes: 1. I s it plastic: You can scrunch the banknote in your hand and a genuine banknote should spring back 2. L ook for the Coat of Arms: If you hold the banknote to the light, you should see the Austalian Coast of Arms 3. L ook for the star: Diamond-shaped patterns are printed inside a circle on both sides of the banknote. If you hold the banknote up to the light, the patterns should line up perfectly to form a seven-pointed star. 4. C heck the clear window: It should be an integral part of the banknote not an addition. More information on detecting counterfeit notes can be viewed on the Reserve Bank of Australia website: http://banknotes.rba.gov.au/assets/ pdf/counterfeit-detection-guide.pdf.

Area Governor Claude Fullinfaw, making a point at the Club’s Christmas break up. Bribie Toastmasters a vibrant club of people dedicated to advancing the skills of public speaking, is in recess till the 17th of January. The club has had a successful year just ended and looks forward to seeing some new faces in 2017. 2016 saw the club advance in terms of membership and achievements with several new faces adding to the ranks of those who have already been helped to overcome their natural fear of speaking in public. How many times have you felt that cringing terror when told, “……hey we’d like you to propose the toast to the Bride’s parents” or we need you to explain to the people how this machinery works and where we see it being of greatest benefit to the industry in the future. The fear is very real but can be overcome.
At Toastmasters we have seen people nervously coming along to find out what goes on in our meetings, actually joining the club and go from their first assisted speeches to working through several speeches to become proficient at delivering the spoken word and getting results and awards all within a few months. The club suggests that you add a visit to Toastmasters to your New Year’s resolution list and come and meet some great people whose main aim in life is helping nervous speakers lose their nerves and butterflies. Toastmasters meet on the first and third Tuesday nights upstairs in the ANZAC room of the RSL Club at 7.00.PM.

THE ESCAPE ARTIST
Some dogs are escape artists. First check your yard for any escape routes, get down to your dog’s level and view it from their point of view. Repair all holes no matter how small they are, remove trees, you’d be surprised at how some dogs can climb trees and jump over the fence. Another make sure the fence is high enough so the dog can’t leap over. Then try and work out why he escapes in the first place. The answer is quite numerous. It can be boredom, fear of thunderstorms, an entire male will go searching for a female, separation anxiety or he visits a neighbour who gives him special treats. I will touch on these in later articles.
If your dog is missing make sure he is microchipped and the details are up to date, that way when he is found the vet or council will be able to contact you. It helps if the dog is desexed as they are unlikely By Photoangel / Freepik to go wandering following the scent of a female dog in season. Phone the local vets in the area, council, and the RSPCA. Put notifications on Facebook such as in Pets on Bribie Island or Bribie Island and Moreton Bay Community Page. Then it becomes a painful waiting game. Most dogs do turn up on their own accord. This is one reason it is important to let them sniff when walking in the streets from your home as it will help them to recognise the location so if they are lost then their nose can bring them home. Then let’s hope it ends well. Happy training! Yvonne

Pet

CAN WE SHARE OUR FOOD WITH OUR PETS? eaten by them. It causes the red blood cells to burst in circulation with terrible consequences, leading to rapid kidney failure.
Dogs and cats are not as well adapted to consuming a varied diet as we are. The simple reason is that we are omnivorous and they are carnivorous. Omnivores (including people) are tolerant of the widest variety of foods whereas carnivores are much less tolerant being designed primarily to live on meat based foods, which of course includes whole animal consumption, gut contents and all. Dogs and cats lack the enzyme required to break down onion (or any vegetable in the onion family) and onion is often fatal if
Also, our dogs and cats don’t do well on diets with a lot of fats in, fats and certain foods trigger some very serious gut diseases such as severe vomiting and diarrhoea and even bleeding into the gut. Meats with a lot of fat and any meat from pigs (including bacon, port and ham) appears to be particularly nasty for triggering severe bouts of gastro-enteritis in many of our dogs and cats. With pig based meats it is probably both the high fat content as well as the actual pig protein source that triggers gastro-enteritis; pig meats are simply too rich for our dogs and cats to stomach! Please avoid feeding crackling or Christmas roast to your pet. If we feed our beloved dogs and cats on our own food, we run the real risk of literally poisoning them with onion or pig meats, to name just 2 of the more common foods which are fine for people but can have terrible (even fatal) health consequences for our pets. It is just too easy to accidentally poison our pets if we feed them on people food. Phone Dr Jackie on 0400 699 704 for an appointment.

CONSCIOUS LIVING
By Nikita Chee
Time to Shine
What was 2016 like for you? From the people I encountered or worked with over the year, one story kept repeating there seemed to be a lot of upheaval. Upheaval happens when there is change afoot and the more we are resistant to that change the more struggles arise. Struggle can show up in many ways, often as sickness, physical pain, fatigue, conflict or more life drama. So ask yourself that question again….what was 2016 like for you and how do you want 2017 to be different? Is there something you know you want to change, something maybe you’ve known for a while but have been avoiding dealing with? The good news is that 2017 is all about new beginnings. The universe literally will be supporting you IF you decide to jump and put your needs first. Women in particular are very good at putting the needs of others first and feeling the guilt, blame and shame of well…just about everything! But when you neglect your own inner needs, you are running on empty, life becomes a struggle, trying to be all things to all people, wondering why you are not appreciated the
way you should be, feeling dull or anxious. “You can’t be the light you want to be in the world if you are not tending your own flame”. CALLING ALL WOMEN! This is why I want to offer you a unique FREE* opportunity to experience what it’s like to be seen and heard the way YOU want, to connect to your own infinite energy source, to feel free of the ‘shoulds’ and tap into your intuition instead, to make 2017 a year for Relief, Freedom and Happiness! Country? Not everyone’s cup of tea. Country rock infused with middle eastern twangingflavour? A new taste everyone should try. Keith Urban’s latest album, “Ripcord” (May 2016), showcases just that in, “Gone Tomorrow (Here Today)”, the first of 13 new tracks featuring the likes of Carrie Underwood, Pitbull and Nile Rodgers. “Gone Tomorrow”, begins with a blast of ganjo that gives the song it’s middle-eastern undertones and is accompanied by country rock guitars, a drum loop and backing vocalists, testing the limits of traditional country music. The song was inspired by his late father and is the epitome in believing there’s more but living in the moment. Urban summarises this by using that age-old phrase in the first verse, “But I won’t live with regret, carpe diem is the secret”. “Taste of Country”, describes it as an infectious slap of reality” (YouTube, 2016). Respect goes toward Urban for intertwining music genres and developing hybrid world-entertainment with a valuable message.

WISHING YOU A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
islander extraordinaire George Goold
When George Goold told his wife Sally that he was thinking about buying a taxi, her response was, ‘Is there any money in taxis?’ Well, I suppose there must have been a bit because, almost thirty five years later, George operates a fleet of sixteen cars under the banner of Bribie Island Taxis Service.
was some antiquated law that prevented me from having a taxi in Brisbane as well as one on Bribie. Because my plan was to use the cab in Brisbane to subsidise my island taxi until it showed a profit, I offered to enter into an interim agreement to dispose of the Brisbane based taxi as soon as was feasible’, he said.
George made the decision to enter the taxi industry after having been a coach driver for Ansett Pioneer and a representative of the Transport Worker’s Union. ‘Whenever I applied for a job and I mentioned my time with the union, the attitude of the person interviewing me became very cool and it was like, ‘’don’t call us, we’ll call you’’, George told me. ‘After having this happen a few times I then decided to check out the possibility of buying a taxi’, he added.
As luck would have it, before George relinquished the Brisbane license, the law that had caused all the trouble was overturned. As Bribie Island Taxi Service became more established, it was only natural that the fleet would increase and, it was also natural that from time to time George would have to do battle with the Transport Department over one rule or another. As is evident by the business that he operates now, George’s willingness to take on all challenges including government officials has paid off .
Securing the license for a Brisbane based cab under the banner of Ascot Taxis, George began his taxi career in 1982 and it would be another ten years before he was to offer his services to the residents of Bribie Island. ‘I built a house at Banksia Beach in 1979 and, as well as the one taxi service that was operating on the island, there was a more recent operator was trying to get out so I tried to take him over’, said George. ‘The Transport Department told me that there
‘I remember when Commonwealth cars were in short supply and I was asked by the Department of Veteran Affairs to fill in transporting veterans to their medical appointments. This was the motivation I needed to start operating a limousine service and that has now become a very incremental part of the business’ Said George. ‘As well as working for Veteran’s Affairs we also offer a full range
of limousine services including airport transfers at the most competitive rates available,’ he added. Obviously a very astute business operator, George knows the importance of tailoring his business to suit the needs of the local community and, as well as the fleet of taxis and limousines, George takes pride in being able to offer vehicles with wheelchair access. ‘Unlike other companies, we can provide single wheelchair vehicles that are not just a commercial type van but provide the comfort associated with a normal passenger car including airbags. We use the well respected Toyota Tarago for this part of our service,’ George told me. Until early last year, Bribie Island Taxi Service was based at George’s home in Banksia Beach where there were two offices as well as a three car garage and workshop. George finally decided however, that the time had come for his business to operate from a commercial premises and, after an estimated expenditure of $300,000 to purchase and renovate the building, Bribie Island Taxi Service relocated to the current location at Verdoni Street in Bellara. The new premises boasts a modern office, ample workshop facilities and vehicle parking areas and staff have the use of a fully
By Neil Wilson
equipped kitchen and dining area as well as a well maintained bathroom. Whilst being the first to admit that the business is doing quite well at the moment, George has great concerns about the impact that Uber ride sharing is and is going to have on the Taxi industry. ‘The Brisbane taxi operators are feeling the effect a lot more than we are here. However, the one statistic that does directly impact my operation is that taxi licenses are now virtually worthless so instead of having a business that I could sell for a good amount if I ever needed to, I now have a business that would be very hard to sell at all,’ said George. When discussing his concerns about Uber, George told me that one thing which does worry him greatly is that if it ever came to a point where Uber were to dominate the island taxi market, people in the local community that he has been passionate about providing a quality service to would no longer have the availability of vehicles with wheelchair access because that facility is not offered as a part of the Uber operation. Even someone who obviously spends a great amount of time running his business must have an outside interest and for George, it is collecting and maintaining vehicles from a bygone era. His collection includes several and varied models of Mercedes Benz cars that were manufactured in the 1960’s as well as beautifully presented Diamond T trucks which on occasions are transported by George’s Kenworth prime mover and drop deck trailer to specialty truck shows throughout the country. Speaking of trucks, George is still fully licensed to drive the big rigs although he admits that the Diamond T’s are a bit hard for him without the help of power steering. In 2005, George’s association with all things truck related was recognized when he was inducted into the Truckie’s Hall of Fame in Alice Springs. Providing the Bribie Island community with a quality taxi service for twenty four years and going from strength to strength despite at times battling adversity, Sally and George Goold should be proud of their achievements. George Goold is just one more example of the extraordinary residents that make up the population of our beautiful island.

available at the newsagents in Bellara or Woorim and also at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre. Apparently the 2017 calendar is selling quite quickly and Lissa told me she might have to do another print run. Having seen the ‘’Now and Then’’ 2017 calendar, I can honestly say that, regardless of whether you need a calendar or not, the images alone would make this a worthwhile purchase.
These calendars are produced in two sizes and each year, Lissa uses a different theme to display her images. The one that is currently available for 2017 has a ‘’Now and Then’’ aspect and displays two photos of various areas, one taken a long time ago and one captured recently by Lissa. Last year, Lissa’s calendar featured photos of all areas of the island taken from an aircraft. ‘I wanted everyone who lived here to be able to find their house in one of the photos,’ said Lissa. Whilst admitting that at times, producing the calendar has not always gone to plan, this talented island resident continues to look forward to producing calendars for years to come and also has plans to produce place mats and other useful items which will display the great images captured by her camera lens. ‘I did do a small run of place mats and they sold out in no time,’ said Lissa. ‘So I definitely will be working on those in the near future. I am finding that many of those who are buying the calendars are sending them off as Christmas presents and I think that the place mats could possibly be used for the same purpose,’ she said. For anyone who wishes to purchase one (or two) of Lissa’s calendars, they are

After many years of coming to Bribie Island for holidays and weekends, Lissa and her parents finally moved here in 1983 and her parents still live at the same address that they moved to at that time. In 1989, Lissa left home to join the army and, after a three year term, moved on to other ventures along the East coast of Australia. It would be twenty two years before Lissa finally made the decision in 2011 to once again make the island her home. ‘Over the time prior to that I seemed to be getting closer with each move. It was almost like a magnet was slowly drawing me back,’ she said. ‘I absolutely love living here and I know that I will never want to live anywhere else,’ Lissa told me.
Lissa decided, as her grandfather had done, to make postcards with up to date photos of Bribie as anything that was available in the shops was usually of poor quality and the photos were out of date. Not long after, with the encouragement of one of the newsagents and some of her friends, she decided that, as nothing like this was available, it would be a great idea for some of her images to adorn the pages on a calendar and her first one on the market was for the year 2013.

With a family association with the island that stretches back to the 1920’s, Lissa is a wealth of information when it comes the development of Bribie during the 20th century. She told me about her family being tobacco farmers on the island with a large tobacco farm situated immediately behind Welsby Parade and also owning Winston’s store which was on Toorbul Street Just past First Avenue. ‘My grandfather Frank Winston was an avid photographer back in the early 1900’s and took many photos all around Bribie,’ said Lissa. ‘He made a lot of them into postcards and sold them through the store,’ she added. Another connection that Lissa has with earlier Bribie is that, for a time, her maternal grandfather ran one of the barges that brought people across to the island from the mainland.
As well as working part time in retail, this now passionate exponent of all things Bribie has started a venture in which she is able to use her interest in photography to promote the island near and far. ‘I want to share Bribie Island with the world because I believe that it’s such a special place,’ Lissa said. ‘My parents have many boxes of the photos that my grandfather took and I guess that looking through these was partly responsible for what I decided to do,’ she said.

If you ever want to know what a particular area of Bribie Island looked in the earlier part of the last century, the chances are that local resident and photographer Lissa Winston will be able to show you a photo.
It never ceases to amaze me how fortunate the community of Bribie Island is to have so many residents who not only have a talent to share but use their talent to promote our beautiful island. I believe that each and every one of those public spirited members of our community deserves the title of Islander Extraordinaire. Lissa Winston you are definitely one of the

HOLIDAYS ON BRIBIE 100 YEARS AGO The following information is provided by Barry Clark, Founder of the Bribie Island Historical Society, and tells the story of the Guest Houses on South Esplanade, as a posh alternative to pitching your own tent. Bribie had become a small resident and tourist destination as early as 1912 when the Jetty was built at Bongaree, and Steamships made regular trips from Brisbane via Redcliffe. In the twelve years before the first basic road was constructed in 1924, holiday-makers would walk from Bongaree along hot sandy tracks through the bush to swim in the Ocean surf at Woorim. This insight to Bribie Island history is one of numerous Bronze Plaques placed along the foreshore at Bongaree as part of the Q150 Commemoration. Brochures for this Heritage walk are available at the Seaside Museum.

In the 1950s and 1960s cyclones caused extensive erosion and the road was eventually washed away, and now turns inland at Renton Lane “Glan-y-Mor” was another guest house run by Bob Davies for board and residence in conjunction with his twin sisters, Rose and Lil, situated a little further away on the corner of Campbell and Banya Streets. When the main residence was fully occupied, external accommodation was provided in the form of thatched roof open air shed with an added luxury of drop down mosquito nets for protection against midges and “mossies”. The Davies family also had a kiosk at the jetty and established “Novelty Gardens” around Glan-y-Mor which featured shapes of animals carved and trimmed from young pine trees, which quickly became a tourist attraction and a garden venue for Rose and Lil to entice visitors for a cup of tea. Their dining room was renowned for their pea and ham soup and fresh fish dinners.
Memories There are references to guest houses and kiosks that catered for the tourists arriving on the Steam Ship “Koopa” as early as 1915. Guests disembarking from either the “Koopa “or the “Doomba” would be met at the jetty by the proprietors of the guest houses and assisted with their luggage. The walk along the Esplanade at this time was a sand track through grass and trees. There were as many as six guest houses as well as private homes, along South Esplanade. In those early days the sand track of South Esplanade continued further south, following the beach, past the
For those who chose not to pitch their tent along the foreshore, the choice of guest houses along South Esplanade provided a more comfortable alternative.

A couple of years ago we were fortunate to purchase a 1 & 1/4 acre residential property here on Bribie. The lot consists of a separate yard for the residence and then a long narrow paddock that runs between the rears of adjoining properties. Over the past year and a half, we have been working on creating new gardens for the residence yard. The property has a low lying area along the middle of the entire length, so we have built up garden beds on either side. This allows for short term collection of water that occurs during heavy rains that coincide with king tides, without the gardens being flooded. Concrete footings with a single layer of retaining blocks now define this area.
Geranium and Gin Gin Gem prostrate Grevillea
Our soil is very sandy so we have enriched it with animal manure (alpaca), sugar cane mulch, used ground coffee from our local deli, copious amounts of mushroom compost, and topped it off with mulched tree chips. Plants have then been chosen for the various areas, depending on their preferred growing conditions.

CRAFTY 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
by Neil Wilson
In 2006, when Crafty Shed founder Stephanie Domegala felt that there was a need for a venue that would help to draw the local community together, she ran an advertisement in a local paper and as a result, commenced the Crafty Shed with only five members and could never have imagined just how popular the group would become. ‘Within a year we had ninety members and the numbers are approximately the same as we celebrate our ten year anniversary. The reason that our numbers don’t seem to have grown past what they were after twelve months is only due to member’s health and people moving away’, said Stephanie. ‘The Crafty Shed is just as much a place for people to come for a bit of company as it is for participation in any of the various groups’, she said. Located behind the community hall
in Ningi, the Crafty Shed has become a venue for quite a diverse range of activities including quilting, acrylic painting, knitting, crocheting and card making. Charmaine Ludlow who is another very keen member told me that one of the great things that she enjoys is that group members are able to share their skills with each other. ‘I had heard about the Crafty Shed while I was still working so when I retired, to make sure that I was not like some retirees who just waste away due to having nothing to keep them active, I became a member and I look forward to being here. One of the aspects that I find quite wonderful is that there is never any conflict between members,’ she told me. Due to the number of groups that make up the organization, there is activity at the Crafty Shed each day except
Sunday and the building is packed with participants. ‘Sometimes there are that many members here that we ended up having to buy more chairs,’ Stephanie told me. Items that are made at The Crafty Shed are usually available for sale to anyone who is looking for something that is hand made with a lot of love and care. The proceeds from these sales are donated to worthy community organizations and I was told that one donation made during December was an amount of $500 which went to the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre from the quilters. As part of their anniversary celebrations, the members gathered together on Wednesday December 14th for a catered Christmas lunch
which was held in the Ningi Community Hall. Division one Councillor Brooke Savige was one of the guests who attended on the day and she told me how much she admired the dedication of the members of The Crafty Shed. ‘I think that it’s a real testament to the group that they have managed to create such an important focal point and I think that the drop in aspect is even more important than the arts and crafts side,’ Brooke said. ‘As a Council, we are proud to support any organisations that make such a difference in the community,’ she added. Anyone who would like to be a member of The Crafty Shed or would just like some more information on the organization can contact Jill on 5429 5117 for details.

Memories of Florence
Island Walk
The Land
Lurline Thomson, Bongaree
Sharmayne Kurtz16/07/15

I remember when we first met, I remember your beautiful smile, and the way, your Irish eyes twinkled, as you said “come in for a while.”
Soft lace bubbles brace the shore Silver water giving an encore Putty colour sand beneath my feet Soft blue grey sky where the horizon meets
A trickle of sweet Runs from my brow. To the beat of the sun Over head of my plow. In the pasture I toil With hands full of seed. For a crop to be grown For the mouths in the need.
Now I was thirty and you were too, with our youngest just babies on hips, that’s when the memories started to grow, with laughter and sadness and kids. Florence was named for her Aunty Flo and though she hated the name, Just like Florence Nightingale, she nursed the sick and the maimed. Florence could sing like a bird, they wanted to train her in Sydney, but she took one look at Trevor, her love and said “marriage for me completely.” I remember one day at the shops down-town, I heard a voice that I knew, “Hey, Lurl, is that you over there ?” “Yes!By the toilet rolls, where are you?” Well, our kids were embarrassed as every eye turned, but we did not give a hoot, cause whenever we met it was always joy and always the chatter was beaut. The years went by with movies and trips, and the kids had all grown and gone, Florence decided that Bribie was nice, I also made Bribie my home. By then her heart was failing, there was nothing the doctors could do, so we lived and laughed but the bad times came frequently too. Now Florence has gone to her home on high, and I can picture it clearly, she’s nursing the babies and singing along with people she missed so dearly.
Beautiful Bribie Hazel Cameron A little piece of heaven, Tucked away to be enjoyed. Sitting on the beach, Listening to the waves, froth tipped And crashing on the shore. Washing the sand, leaving it smooth and imprint free, Then retreating back into the ocean, Again lifting skywards to return once more In a constant tidal cycle. Sand, pock-marked by an early morning shower, Damp grains clinging tenaciously to everything it touches, The sand a beautiful shade of creamy white Broken by the tough beach grasses fusing it to the shore So that it may not slip away
Chains Mark Boyle With fear in our hearts. They sent us away. To a land strange and new. For the err of our ways. Despite how we came, We made this country our home. With back breaking toil. Sweat, pain and more than you’ll ever know. Chains that once bound us Have become part of our souls. Forged iron of hero’s. reaching our goals. Those that stood before us. Now take to our sides. Our strength is in numbers. There’s nothing beyond us. Just you hear us cry.
And be enveloped once more into the hungry mouth of the sea. Early morning beach wanderers Towel-enshrouded to protect against the rays of the sun, Strolling the shore Enjoying the peaceful surroundings, And the mystical magic of the rolling surf Muting a cacophony of everyday sounds, Broken occasionally by the screeching of gulls As they watch intrepid fishermen, Hoping for some tender morsel to come their way. Serenity and tranquility abounds Bathing one is a soft mantle of peace Helping to relieve the stressors of everyday living. Yes, Bribie is indeed very beautiful And a wee slice of paradise To relish, savour and enjoy.
“Thank you so much for putting my poetry in your paper. It is a great paper full of useful information and I read it cover to cover each time. Thank you again.” Hazel Cameron
Water so soft flat and low A speedboat creating a bit of a show It heads to the point and out of view Just the silver water and the colour hues It quietens the mind and creates a space Your heart slows down and you can feel its pace I glance over the water and to my surprise A lone dolphin on the evening tide He swims in a line and keeps his pace His movement so slow I am fixed on his gaze His dark silhouette against the evening mist Adds to the rhythm of this magic bliss I forget my thoughts and he takes the space I hold my breath until he breaks So quiet so lonely so comforting too It is as if he is there just to view To change my thought my life my chance To serenade and twirl with this handsome man I stand and watch this charismatic site Of how sand and sea have a magical plight No matter what time of the day you come Just sit and watch this environmental hum The white sea gulls fishing for pipi on the evening tide The black wrens gather for the white bait glide The children playing in the soft white sand As the dogs just runs because they can All of this just here at the Woorim Beach Soft white sand beneath my feet.
My muscles are sore As fire in the wind. The horse draws the blade From the crack of the whip. I dream of my fortune Away with my wife. Living in town with A job and a life. But then what would happen To my farm and my name? A car park or house block My guts twist with shame. To hell with the riches And the new job in town. The weight of temptation Twists my face to a frown. So, I plow through the dirt, I cut through the pain. My farm is in drought, I prey it will rain. It’s not just a job On land or in soil. I’m a farmer first and last And proud just to toil.
Memories Mark Edwards Sun, sand, water and blue skies; the cries of gulls. Memories. A young boy with wonder in his heart on a journey with Ma and Pa, to where two worlds stand apart, stitched together by a bridge. I remember that skeleton, bare bones in water and arching skin, and like bent fingers the light poles stark and thin. Memories. But most of all I remember them, calm majestic and regal and to a small child, mystical in their clumsy elegance. Oh how I wished I could be with them to scan the passage with their eyes, to be a part of their world in my disguise. Memories. I have come back here after all those years to live in a world caught between ocean and a wide wondrous land. Glimpsing those distant memories of childhood I now understand, that the wonder of then is the exhilaration of now. I know that when my body is wan and my breath draws thin, I will soar from that bridge across water and land in graceful flight with them. To finally be as one with The Pelicans of Bribie. Memories.

friends forever

Bridging Leaders
Happy year of newness my precious Bribie Islanders. I hope and pray that your Christmas break has been splendid and lots of magical moments were shared. I know that I’ve made lots of those this last season, ones that I will squish into my heart forever! One thing that I’ve come to find to be quite a nice thing to do at parties and gatherings when all the colour and sound of festivity is alive around you and all the conversations seem to blur into a delightful symphony of celebration, is to just sit and watch. You’ve partaken in your fair share of social interactions, eaten food, sung songs and been merry, worked in the
kitchen, danced. Whatever you do at such occasions! But now, you have found a brief gap in the current of merriment to observe from a distance. I like this part a lot. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gala event or a simple gathering of friends, after a short amount of time you usually discover who has the heart-beat of a group. The official or unofficial host if you like. It is herein that you find that the, “one-in-charge”, is the one who serves everyone else. These people are the ones calling the shots and controlling the situation and can often come across as arrogant or dominating. Yet, if you watch closely enough, they are also
catering, protecting and nurturing for all those that are present. These people are leaders. We can often talk down those who are in positions of authority. Just get people talking on the topics of celebrities, political leaders or, well, parents! We dissect their every move and magnify their flaws because we expect perfect leadership (which should always be the ultimate goal) from imperfect people. Little do we realise the enormity of what it takes to get the job done right in these roles. It is easy to just look at the status and accolade that people who are, “at the top,” so to speak, receive and criticize their earnings.
Turn on the corny tap! What do these folk need? Grace and understanding mostly. They really are serving us. They might look like they’re at the top, but good leaders are always letting everyone else stand upon their shoulders, always lifting up, always being the bridge over troubled waters. Think upon a King or Queen of a Kingdom. What do you often hear them say, that they are here to, “Serve the people”. The greatest shall always go beneath the least so the least can be the greatest. Leaders are heroes.

In the vegetable aisle, New Zealand asparagus is expensive and average quality broccoli, Victorian brussels sprouts and top quality cabbage, cauliflower, capsicum, carrots, parsnips, squash, potatoes and sweet potatoes are firmly priced. Beans have fluctuated in value for some weeks and are of average quality but cheap. Good quality celery and eggplant are also cheap.
You will find beetroot, fennel, leeks, snow peas, silverbeet, sweet corn, zucchini, mushrooms, onions and pumpkin are of good quality and affordable. Salads are the go-to item for anyone looking to spread their dollar further with avocados, lettuce, mixed salad leaves, cucumbers, eshallots and all herbs reasonably priced.
Tomatoes have taken a dramatic upswing in price and are expensive with some good quality stock arriving from the Bundaberg growing region. The best fruit buys are reasonably priced
bananas, limes and New Zealand and Italian grown kiwifruit.
Expect to pay firm prices for apples, all berries, navel and valencia oranges, figs, passionfruit, pawpaw, pomegranate and grapes, with the red grape varieties the best eating. Mangoes and stonefruit are falling into two markets – reasonable to firm prices for the not so tasty offerings and top dollar for the larger sized, juicy fruit that is the quality expected for the Christmas table.
Poor growing conditions in the harvest regions have meant fewer top quality rockmelon, watermelon, honey dew, pineapples and cherries are available, pushing prices for good quality fruit upward to become the most expensive seen all year.
Other festive fruits, such as dragon fruit, lychees, and rambutans are available but expensive. It is noted that lychees and rambutans are perishable at room temperature and fluctuating heat and will dry out quickly, so store them in the refrigerator in a sealed plastic bag in the vegetable crisper until they are ready to be served. By contrast, dragonfruit will keep on the counter for a few days but will store longer in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

In the centre of Bribie as we head toward the eastern side, we come to the industrial area opposite the sports fields in Bongaree and among the many businesses to be found on First Avenue are Bribie Pontoons, First Avenue Tyre and Mechanical and also Bribie Boat Sales. By now I guess that you’re starting to realize the extent of the goods and services that are available on our island home.
In case you are spending time at Sandstone Point, pick up a paper, magazine or Gold Lotto entry from the Sandstone Point News Extra in the shopping centre on Bestman Road East. They have everything you would ever expect to find at a newsagent.
First Ave
Back on First Avenue after leaving Woorim, if we take a left turn at the first roundabout, we are actually continuing on First Avenue in Bongaree and after we go past the schools, on the right at the shops there we find The Village Deli and Grow Plant Nursery. Both these businesses are owned by the same dedicated local residents and have a great reputation for providing quality service to their customers. Turn left at the end onto Toorbul Street and on the right hand side you will see Scoopy’s Family Café, an exceptionally popular venue for a relaxed outdoor meal. Down just a few metres on the left, there is an arcade which, as well as being the home of Bribie Island Solar and The Bribie Islander, is also where you will find the Bongaree Arcade Naturopath where patients can feel confident about receiving the right treatment that result from twenty five years experience.
P
Let’s keep going up to the next roundabout, (the really big one just past the Police station) and turn left onto Sunderland Drive. This will take us to Banksia Beach and, on the right hand side at the corner of Endeavour Drive, we come to a small shopping centre. If you’re feeling hungry by now, would suggest that you try one of the award winning burgers from Sue’s Café and Takeaway. Inside the centre are a range
Okay, as we head back along Sunderland Drive, on the left at the first roundabout is the Community Arts Centre where you’ll find a large variety of art on display and there is also a souvenir shop on the premises. When we get back to the roundabout at Bellara, if we turn second left into Goodwin Drive, we go past the large shopping centre, (by the way, Gloria Jeans is in there opposite Woolworths if you want a great coffee) at the roundabout where Maccas is, you will find a great range of fruit and vegetables at Wright’s Fruit Barn. Further along on Goodwin Drive, at the corner of Cotterill Avenue is Twiggy’s where you can buy a tasty pizza or a variety of takeaway meals.
is Serenity Café, another excellent example of the quality dining venues that the island has to offer. About half way between here and the bridge on the left is where you can hire a Segway Kayak, Paddle Boat or an Electric Bike at the Bribie Island Hire Hut. Guess what, we’ve more or less come full circle so I hope that this little guided tour has helped and, by the way, if you don’t feel like driving to any of the wonderful areas on the island, you can always rely on the service provided by Bribie Island Taxi and Limousine Service.
Cos
Back out on Benabrow, a few metres further along brings us to Waterama Pool and Irrigation, a very handy place to get expert advice on all things related to their areas of expertise. Just along from them is SportFirst, they have everything from pushbikes to sports shoes and other accessories.
end of First Avenue in Woorim, there is a small shopping complex just past the hotel and hidden in there are two very popular local businesses. Woorim Beach Meats is the butcher that attracts customers from near and far due to their quality meats and smallgoods. The Crab Pot is also a business with a reputation for tasty takeaways that is known by both locals and visitors alike.
l
Coming off the bridge and approaching the first roundabout, on the left is Aussie Blokes Clothes. They have such a great range in there including sizes to fit really big blokes. If we keep going through the roundabout on Benabrow Avenue, in the second little shopping complex there is an arcade and at the front we find Bellara News, a great place to pick up a magazine or even a few convenience type items. Just a bit further down the arcade is The Art Shop Café where the coffee and food is first class and you’ll find a wonderful display of paintings by local artists, some of which are available for purchase.
of specialty shops including Bribie Island Pilates and Beauty as well as Landed Urban Wear. Both of these businesses are owned and operated by locals who have a commitment to provide excellent service to their customers. Also, situated at the Woolworths end you will find Banksia Beach News, a well stocked range of magazines, stationery and gift items is available there.

THOSE SNEAKY TREES by Neil Wilson
Frank Keppler and his colleagues at the Max Plank Institute for Nuclear Physics in Germany. His lengthy investigations have shown that plants are responsible for the release of between sixty and two hundred and forty tones of methane each year. ‘It is a new pathway of methane formation,’ said Keppler. ‘It will change our thinking about plants and their role in climate change,’ he added.
Planting more trees helps produce more oxygen and reduces carbon dioxide, right? Well, it’s not as straight forward as you might think. Yes, during daylight hours most vegetation does, during the process of photosynthesis, takes up carbon dioxide by day and releases oxygen. However, at night, apparently, the process is reversed and carbon dioxide is released by way of natural respiration. As a tree is growing the release of oxygen definitely outweighs the amount of carbon dioxide put into the air at night
but when it is fully grown, well, that’s a different story. When a tree, or for that matter any plant reaches it’s full size, the difference between the amount of carbon dioxide taken up by day and released at night lessens. Trees will still normally take up more carbon dioxide than they release due to continually growing leaves and adding to the trunk. A lot of this carbon dioxide still ends up in the air though, because when leaves and branches fall and rot, the carbon is simply released again. There
may also be times when a tree will raise it’s respiration rate above that of photosynthesis due to producing lots of flowers and leaves but this is normally only for a short time. Research has shown that, whilst trees don’t give off more carbon dioxide than they take up, the difference in many cases is minimal at best.
Although Keppler’s findings have seen some scientists react with disbelief, others have said that his experiments were so thorough that there can be little doubt about his claims. Under Kyoto protocol rules, countries with high emissions of carbon dioxide are allowed to use the planting of new forests as an offset but in light of Keppler’s findings, scientists will now be scrambling to calculate the net carbon emissions from trees. Keppler also believes that there could be a link between rising temperatures due to global warming and the increased methane emissions from plants. ‘This effect could be much more pronounced than the benefit that you get from reforestation,’ he said.
So, while we’re on the subject of trees and their adverse effects to the atmosphere, it has been discovered that animals are not solely responsible for the release of methane according to
With all this new information about the secrets of these sneaky trees and plants that are part of our environment, it makes you wonder if you can look at them the same way ever again.
By Philip Arlidge
THE BRIBIE WINELANDER The festive season has now concluded and I hope everything went as planned with no last minute hic-ups. This year let’s start by setting the record book straight and have a look at the one wine I have avoided over the last two years and that is Sauvignon Blanc. It’s not that I have an aversion to the wine, after all I do drink the odd bottle every now and then, but I find in comparison to other grape varieties it lacks a bit of style and character. To make a great Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz or Cabernet takes great winemaking skills whereas there is a great similarity in inexpensive Sauvignon Blanc’s to very expensive ones. Perhaps that’s being a trifle cruel as I am referring to our neighbours across the pond in New Zealand as the wines produced in Australia bear very little if any resemblance to those wines. It is hard to criticise a wine style that has taken the whole white wine drinking world by storm in every country across the globe, but put a Wahoo Geison, Mount Riley, Amiri, Toi Toi, Catalina Sounds, Kim Crawford, Villa Maria and a Oster Bay in a blind tasting with an everyday wine drinker and I wonder in what order they would be marked, I have a feeling that price wouldn’t dictate the order of preference! Sauvignon Blanc certainly isn’t a new grape variety it has been around for many years and has been made in many styles including the use of barrel fermentation
which often gives a smokey character resulting in the name Fume Blanc. It was the winemakers refusal to change the style of Australian Chardonnays in the mid 1990’s from being dominated by the heavy use of oak that opened the door for the refreshing New Zealand style of wine to enter the market and enter it certainly did.
is widely cultivated in France, Chile, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Washington and California where Fume Blanc is used widely on the label. Depending on the climate the style varies from aggressively grassy and high acid such as New Zealand to sweetly tropical in warmer climates and can lose a lot of the aroma if over ripe.
An interesting fact is that Dan Murphy, which is by far and away the retailer that carries the largest selection of wine of any retailer, carries 375 Sauvignon Blanc labels, 989 Chardonnay labels and 439 Riesling labels so perhaps the Australian wine drinker is a little more selective than I first thought, but it should be remembered that as good quality Chardonnays and Rieslings do age very well, and Sauvignon Blanc’s don’t, a lot of aged cellar release wines are carried in their stock, but it could also be that Sauvignon Blanc drinkers are pretty well set in their ways and stick to their favourite brands making it silly to carry a lot of stock of labels of wines that taste very similar, which was my point in the first place.
Strangely most of the wine produced in America still uses cork (even plastic ones on cheaper wine) but the largest selling white wine is from New Zealand and are all screw cap! A favourable description of Sauvignon Blanc is “crisp, elegant and fresh” especially from The Loir Valley of France and The Marlborough Region of New Zealand, but for a change look for Sauvignon Blanc’s from The Adelaide Hills of South Australia, one I particularly enjoy is from The Wicks Estate Winery.
Sauvignon Blanc originates from the Bordeaux region of France where it is used to make some of the finest dessert wines in the world especially Chateau d’Yquem . This wine could be purchased for under ten dollars a bottle some 40 years ago but today expect to pay hundreds for a 375ml. Sauvignon Blanc
There actually is an International Sauvignon Blanc day on The 24th of April, which surprises me that New Zealand haven’t jumped on that band wagon to promote the variety. Since the market has exploded with more brands appearing there has been a definite reduction in the pricing of these wines as the larger companies who have huge estates planted have to clear their stocks prior to picking the next vintage so it pays to look around, one I was impressed with the other week was Toi Toi and I paid less than $10 for a bottle, also look for the wine from Chile where there are some
very impressive wines appearing and at very reasonable prices.
Spare a thought for those in despair: The Old Testament recommends wine for lifting sorrow: Give wine unto those that be of heavy hearts, Let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. Also: From a wise old Roman, Horace, who had a similar opinion: Who, after his wine, prates of poverty? Smooth out with wine the worries of the wrinkled brow, Quaff sweet forgetfulness of life’s cares. The name of god Liber was fancifully derived from the fact that wine frees men from care. And from a practical Japanese proverb: Wine is the best broom for troubles (I’ll drink to that!)

By Veronica Mercer Mental Health Social Worker
Understanding
Mental Health Removing the Stigma Here’s to a happy 2017 to all. It’s a new year and many of us will have made some resolutions. It is believed that the Babylonians were the first to make New Year’s resolutions around 4,000 years ago, and people all over the world have been breaking them ever since! Today, resolving to change and improve yourself and your life is an almost unavoidable part of the transition to a new year. New Year’s resolutions today are a mostly secular practice. Instead of making promises to the gods, most people make resolutions only to themselves, and focus purely on selfimprovement. What is Mental Health? Well mental health and self-improvement go hand in hand. Good Mental health is a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with challenges. Mental health is essential to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships, and the ability to contribute to community or society. Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, and/or behavior that are associated with distress and/or impaired functioning. Mental disorders contribute to a host of problems that may include disability, pain, or death. Basically, everyday things that are often beyond our control contribute to poor mental health. (https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/ topics-objectives/topic/mental-healthand-mental-disorders) A great deal of my practice is focused upon assisting people to explore their
feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Counselling and therapy can be used by people with mental health conditions, and it can also be used by people who want to understand themselves better; for selfimprovement. What is mental health stigma? I ask you what is the difference between, arthritis, asthma and a broken leg compared to depression and anxiety? NOTHING, ZERO, ZIP, NADA and DIDDLY-SQUAT. There is no stigma attached to arthritis, asthma or broken bones Mental health stigma can be divided into two distinct types: • social stigma is characterized by prejudicial attitudes and discriminating behaviour directed towards individuals with mental health problems as a result of the psychiatric label they have been given. • perceived stigma or self-stigma is the internalizing by the mental health sufferer of their perceptions of discrimination (Link, Cullen, Struening & Shrout, 1989), and perceived stigma can significantly affect feelings of shame and lead to poorer treatment outcomes (Perlick, Rosenheck, Clarkin, Sirey et al., 2001). Common Misperceptions 1. The most commonly held belief was that people with mental health problems were dangerous – especially those with schizophrenia, alcoholism and drug dependence, 2. People believed that some mental health problems such as eating disorders and substance abuse were self-inflicted.
3. Respondents believed that people with mental health problems were generally hard to talk to. Nearly half (45%) of Australians will experience a mental illness at some stage of their life. Despite this, people living with mental illness will often experience stigma and discrimination from friends, family, employers and the community. Sometimes the disadvantages and isolation they feel can be more disabling than the mental illness itself. People experiencing mental illness stigma may feel isolated which can lead to loss of hope and a relapse, or worsening, of their condition. Importantly, it can stop people from seeking help and support, because they fear the reactions of people they are seeking support from. Stigma makes many people feel ashamed or embarrassed of their mental illness. Part of the reason for negative attitudes and behaviour towards people with mental illness is a lack of knowledge and a fear of the unknown. Everyone’s got an opinion about mental health, but opinions based on myths add to stigma and make life harder for people affected by mental illness. There is no doubt that our knowledge of mental illness is incomplete. What we have learnt is that mental illness is not laziness, attention seeking, bad diet, mental, physical or spiritual weakness or a failure of character. Mental Illness is illness, as real as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. www.sane.org There is no immunity to mental illness. Not everyone develops a mental illness during their lives, but anyone could. The media also plays a role in reinforcing
a stigma against mental illness by: • portraying mentally ill people with inaccurate stereotypes • sensationalising situations through unwarranted references to mental illness • using demeaning or hostile language. For example, if a part of the media associates mental illness with violence, that promotes the myth that all people with a mental illness are dangerous. In fact, research shows people with mental illness are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence. https:// mhaustralia.org/tags/stigma What can WE do? • Educational approaches – This includes information resources (for example, books, flyers, movies, websites etc.) which challenge inaccurate stereotypes and replace them with factual information. • Contact approaches – This includes interpersonal contact with people with depression/anxiety. • Protest approaches – This involves highlighting of the injustices of stigma and requesting, or demanding attitudes or behaviour’s be suppressed. www. beyondblue.org.au I encourage you all to consider when making your New Year’s resolutions to aim for being part of the solution rather than part of the problem of mental health stigma in this country. Wishing you all good mental health Veronica Mercer Mental Health Social Worker

The five new speed camera trailers will be managed remotely and used in high-risk areas where it is not currently safe or practical to deploy a police officer. Commissioner Ian Stewart said the cameras will begin enforcement as the Road Safety Campaign moves into the Festive Break phase. “Queensland has had a devastating start to the Christmas holidays on our roads, recording 15 fatalities since our road safety campaign commenced on December 9,” Commissioner Stewart said. “Excessive speed continues to be a significant issue in Queensland with about one in four road fatalities involving a speeding motorist. “That is why speed management and enforcement remains a priority for police as we do everything we can to create a safer

“Scapes” was the theme for this month. The photograph could be of a landscape, seascape or cityscape. Roger Bawden’s lovely seascape of “Hastings Point” was the winner in this category. Lions were a popular choice on the night and Vince Bowser’s majestic “Lion King” took out the Mono Projected Image section. John Cupper with another beautiful lion shot titled “Sisters” and a print of a gannet ready to fly titled “My Concord Impersonation” won the two print categories. Marj Webber won the Open Colour with a shot of a Cattle Egret with fluffed out orange feathers during the nesting season titled “Egret in Breeding Plumage” Our judge for the night was Georgie Caldwell a PSQ accredited judge from the Sunshine Coast who drove to Bribie Is for
the meeting. The feedback from Georgie’s critique was informative and entertaining. She stayed and enjoyed supper and a chat with us after the meeting. The Caboolture Heritage Village was the venue for our monthly photography prac outing. Club members braved the 36 degree heat and spent some hours photographing the many interesting features at the centre. After the shoot a trip to the air-conditioned kiosk for a cool drink was a very welcome break. It was interesting to note the range of photos produced by different individuals. Some amazing images were posted on dropbox for the perusal of all. For Several years now towards the end of the year the Photography Club has been taking photos of the Nippers at their annual

Christmas party and donating them to the Surf Life-saving Club. This year was no exception with a few of our photographers giving up their time to help the Nippers. Camp Quality is another worthy cause where some of our crew spend the day in Brennan Park photographing the activities of children enjoying themselves. These photos are also donated back to the organizers. Our Xmas party was graciously hosted once again at the lovely home of Gail and Max Goodair. A great spread was provided by members. The AGM was held before lunch and the winners with the highest total score for the year were announced with Marj Webber first, followed by Vince Bowser second, Ron Le Huray third and Gordon Bentzen fourth. The Bribie Island Photography club meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm in the board room at the Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive. New members are always welcome. The first two meetings are free. If you wish to come along ring Gordon or Gail or just turn up on the night. You will be most welcome.

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
The Soft Side of the Aggressive General with a Heart of Gold Chief of the Army in 2000 – all resulted in his selection as Australian Of The Year in 2001. And right now, having only recently retired from active service as Australia’s Chief of the Defence Force, Cosgrove, at 59, is the obvious choice to restore the 2006 devastated Innisfail cyclone region. The father of three sons and a grandson (his soldier son, Phillip, wounded in Iraq last year) has concerns in leading the taskforce to rebuild the communities, concerns that far outweigh the immediately obvious ones. “Part of the reason I’ve been asked to come here is so that people can put a face to the recovery. When I walk the streets, there are always people approaching me with, ‘Ah, Peter Cosgrove, can I talk to you?’ Helly Kemp As I enter the Innisfail Council building after category-five Cyclone Larry, asking for the publicist who has arranged today’s meeting, a bounding voice resonates from way across the far end of the hall, beckoning, “You don’t want him. It’s me you want!” And there, framed in a doorway, towers a huge man, shirt sleeves rolled up above the elbows and a boyish grin that totally captivates. What an unexpected way to meet one of Australia’s greatest ever generals: Sir Peter Cosgrove! His remarkable career - serving in Malaysia and Vietnam, awarded the Military Cross for “aggressiveness and outstanding courage,” commanding the international peace keeping mission in East Timor, as commandant of Duntroon’s Royal Military College and
“I’d rather be pulled up a hundred times in a hundred metres, than lock my door or be in another place. No one gets turned away. Everybody gets a hearing. “In my first week here I understand the scope of the devastation and see how determined people are to get back to where they were, to restore the individual’s quality of life: a roof over their heads, schools, power – all the things families need. So many people are homeless. However, everyone has been so courageous, like the two ladies rescuing an elderly man trapped in his car.” But, while helping the economy recover from this trauma, Cosgrove is even more concerned with people’s immediate morale and the long term mental health of the shattered lives of so many victims. He worries about the emotional aftereffects that farmers and business owners who can’t sleep, worrying about losing their livelihoods, will feel in the coming months.
“In many cases the most precious things people have lost are their memories,” he says sadly, “their photo albums or their only photograph with their parents. Women, especially feel that very strongly. Emotional welfare is such a big thing.” When Sir Peter talks, it is humble and down to earth – the voice of a sensitive man who at 28 wooed his wife, Lynne, in purple flared trousers on their first blind date in 1975, before they wed in 1976. “We must provide services to relieve the strain,” he insists, “and increase community awareness and response and perhaps have a greater understanding when people get cranky. We must make people feel it’s still worth being a citizen of the Far North.” Cosgrove’s message is simple, “ You live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia – hang on, have faith, stay with the community you know and love and see if we can help you recover.” My husband, John, has accompanied me to this special interview. Having been one of the Queen’s Grenadier Guards both at Buckingham Palace and in Germany, John’s life-long passion is for all things military and he has followed Sir Peter’s career with interest. As once before with Sir Harry Secombe, Cosgrove, born into a Sydney Paddington military family, now becomes the interviewer, asking John about his army time, the two men exchanging anecdotes and Sir Peter talking of his days while serving in the USA, India and the U.K., when he spent time at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, with which
John is only too familiar. When I take a photograph of Sir Peter outside the building with the cyclone devastation in the background, he steps next to John, gently nudging him with, “We’d better smile to keep her happy!” And when we finally leave, Cosgrove opens the door for John, stepping back and holding the door to let him pass. John is flabbergasted. How can a general open a door for a NCO Lance Sergeant, a mere guardsman! “Generals in the British Army are like gods,” John assures me. “They are totally unreachable. You don’t even raise your eyes to look at them unless they speak to you. What a lovely man General Cosgrove is. He makes you feel totally at ease. He is the Soldier’s General.” So it’s no real surprise when eight years later in 2014 Sir Peter becomes our new Governor General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC – a fancy title, but still the same unassuming, lovable mate next door. Australia’s perfect choice!

Committed to Safer Motoring
12 Years on Bribie!
Bribie Car Care has been servicing the locals for over 12 years, they are based at 4 Armitage Street Bribie Island. They offer servicing from as little as $149! They also have many specials that offer discounted rates and more deals to keep you happy. They can provide you with a courtesy car available free of charge as one of their customers. They even offer a free local pick of your vehicle from work or home to enable your servicing experience as ‘too easy’. Talking to Adam he said ‘Our business is based on customer satisfaction along with all the up to date high Tech equipment that we have invested in. We are here to help’.
With the changes to pension eligibility coming into effect as at January 1st, it seems that, yes there will be some that win and also some that will lose and the only question that remains to be satisfactorily answered for those who will be affected in the negative is, ‘’What rebates am I still entitled to, if any?’’ Those who hold a pension concession card have always been entitled to rebates on a variety of state and local government services including land rates, water charges, electricity and vehicle registration and the concerns held are by those who will no longer be entitled to a pension due to their assets exceeding the allowable limit. Whilst it would seem that those in this category will still be able to access rebates on electricity and vehicle registration as well as some health related services due to being the holder of a health care card and/or a Queensland Seniors Card, there is uncertainty about their ongoing full range of entitlements. Prior to January 1st, 2017, singles with assets (other than their home) which were valued at up to $783,500 and couples with assets valued at up to $1,163,000 were entitled to receive a part pension however, that asset limit has been reduced to $547,000 for singles and $823,000 for couples. On
the other side of the coin (pardon the pun) pensioners with modest asset levels will receive an average increase of about thirty dollars each fortnight. Also about 50,000 part pensioners will be increased to full pension as a result of the changes. A spokesperson for the Minister for Social Services has advised that anyone who loses their part pension will receive the Low Income Health Care Card which will entitle them to most available government concessions as well as those offered by private companies. It seems that those who will be most affected by the changes are residents who lose their pension entirely. Inquiries by Bribie Island home owner Dave Williams have revealed that being issued a Low Income Health Care Card will not entitle the holder to concessions on land or water rates. This will mean an added expense of $55.96 per quarter for any one who falls into this category. So, are you or someone you know a winner or a loser? You can find out more by calling 13QGOV, (137468) or at www.qld..gov.au/concessions. HAVE YOUR SAY?? Write a letter to the editor on how this affects you. Email: thebribieislander@gmail.com

Azure Kingfishers are one of ninety species in the world and the second smallest of the ten species of kingfishers in Australia. They are 17-19 cm long and weigh about 40 grams. The smallest is the Little Kingfisher which is found in Northern Australia and is only 12-13 cm in length. Both of these species eat fish and have very short tails unlike all other kingfishers in Australia. They both have large heads, short necks, and long strong bills. The main diet of Azure Kingfishers consists of fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects and frogs. To obtain this food they leave their perch and dive into the water then return to a branch with their catch which is swallowed head first. Sometimes they beat their prey on the branch before it is eaten.
Both male and female are similar in appearance. They are monogamous and their breeding season is usually from September to February. Sometimes two broods are produced during this time. Their nest is in a long burrow up to one metre in length high up in the bank of a river or creek which has been hollowed out by the adult pair. This is lined with bones, shells and fish scales. The nest slopes upwards and 4-7 white roundish eggs are laid on the bare earth in a large chamber at the end of the tunnel. The eggs are white so that the parent birds are able to see them in the dark tunnel. Both parents incubate and feed the chicks. Incubation lasts for about 20-22 days with the young fledging after 22-28 days. In a very wet season flooding can become a problem.

WILD PARSNIP
Ceyx azurea Reasonably common to Bribie Island but not often seen are the brilliant blue, orange and white Azure Kingfishers. They are usually very close to fresh water amongst thick vegetation and their habit of perching for quite lengthy periods on low branches over water makes them hard to find. Usually the only indication that they are there is if you spot the bobbing of the head and the flicking of the tail as they wait for their prey to appear, or if you see a sudden flash of colour as they dart towards the water. When they fly they often make a high-pitched shrill sound.

Opening Umbels
Azure Kingfishers are found in Northern and Eastern Australia and also in Indonesia, PNG and surrounding islands. Their conservation status is of least concern.

Opening flowers Wild Parsnips sometimes known as Wild Carrots are found growing in the infertile sandy soils in heathlands and sheltered forests in coastal Queensland and NSW and are common on Bribie Island. They grow in clumps and flower from September till the end of summer. Flowers are very small, white with sometimes a dash of pink and arranged in umbels made up of four flowering rows. The umbels are about 20 mm in diameter with sometimes up to 72 flowers producing over 1000 seeds. Leaves sprout from the bottom of the native herb

The flowers attract a variety of insects including the European Honey Bee and Australian Native Bee. Tap roots resemble parsnips in shape and colour. Each tuber takes on a slightly different shape and the taste varies slightly in each one. These can be eaten raw or cooked. Early Australians cooked them in campfires in the coals. I dug two Wild Parsnips from sandy soil by the road side and tasted the raw tuber as well as a piece which I had cooked. I found them very palatable with a distinct carrot taste. They are classed as one of the tastiest of the bush tucker foods. During a drought Wild Parsnips become dormant until rain falls when they spring to life again. If burnt in a bushfire they will respond quickly with new growth. Wild Parsnips are easy to cultivate. They are self sowing and slow growing but can be harvested after about 12 months, 2 years or even later if necessary but will become tough if left too long.

WISHING YOU A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST JANUARY MONTHLY FORECAST FROM OSCAR CAINER
Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. Happy New Year! I’ve written much about the excitement that 2017 brings, so these predictions will focus on matters a little closer at hand. This month features the Sun and Mercury both conjuncting Pluto, Mercury turning direct, and Venus and Mars both moving signs. With a Grand Cross at the Full Moon, it’s going to be ‘action stations’ for all! With so much extraordinary planetary activity, we’ll feel the effects of January reverberating throughout the year.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Can you remember how things were for you a couple of years ago? Was there a point you were trying to prove? Some precious objective you were extremely keen to attain? How did all that work out in the end? Might there be a residual issue that’s still hanging around in your life? Your ruler Mars’ long-awaited return to your sign this month, speaks of the chance to recognise some unfinished business, and the ability to resolve it to your satisfaction at last. The Grand Cross ensures you’re not going to be stuck in the past. You’re leaping forward to the right kind of future. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) What are you trying to achieve now? Is it just a pipe dream? Or is it something that, with a few changes and the right help, you could see turned into a reality. Each of us has passing fancies: we like the look of that holiday destination, or see the appeal in a particular designer outfit. But I’m talking about your deeper desires. Yearnings that can’t be satisfied by a splash of cash. This month, listen to what your heart craves. Here comes the chance to restructure and adjust. An exciting, positive new approach will activate a process which restores balance, and brings success. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) This month, the Full Moon creates a Grand Cross with the powerful Jupiter-Uranus opposition. In the midst of this, your ruler changes signs and Venus conjuncts Neptune.
These are amazing messages written across the sky. Where the heavens sometimes send secret coded signals, now they’re shouting through a megaphone. And what are they saying? ‘STOP WORRYING!’ It’s as if the cosmos has noticed what a dreadful state we’ve all got ourselves into. It thinks, ‘This can’t be right. These people deserve better.’ And for you in particular, they’re now saying, ‘All is well.’ NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) If you don’t like where you’re going just turn the wheel. Don’t worry about going off-road. The vehicle you’re in has great big tyres and four-wheel drive. It’s amphibious too, so that torrent of water ahead won’t matter. What’s that… a ravine? Just press the button on the dashboard marked ‘canyon mode’ and you’ll jump right over using your rocket boosters. Will you be bumped, get wet or feel dizzy on the ride? Possibly. But if you want to succeed this month, be prepared for all terrains. With the right attitude they’ll pass by in a flash, and you’ll soon arrive to triumphant scenes. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) With the Sun entering your opposite sign this month, let’s reverse the roles. I’ll be the client, you be the astrologer. Now, I know that you aren’t fully ‘au fait’ with all the celestial information, so I’ll help you a bit. Your ruler conjoins Pluto and there’s a Full Moon forming part of a Grand Cross featuring the historic Jupiter-Uranus opposition. So now you’ve got to tell me how everything I face, even if it’s nerve-racking or difficult, is part of an incredibly profound and positive process. What advice would you give? Well, indeed! Step back now and look from another viewpoint. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) ‘Finally someone let me out of my cage’ rapped Del in the cartoon band Gorillaz. Perhaps this seems an odd point of reference? Yet it is pertinent. There comes a point, in January, when you’ll start to feel as if someone has finally released you from a burden of responsibility… and that you’re disentangled from a tiring response to a problem from the past. Its time to move on, and move
on with style! You’ll be presented with a new concept; a vision that, though far-fetched, is strangely exciting. And if anyone is able to turn a fantasy into a reality this month, it’s you! NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) A dismantled engine is of little use to anyone. The parts just sit on the workbench, creating an oily mess which is of interest only to a keen mechanic. When that same engine is reinstalled in a vehicle it becomes a powerful machine that can take you almost anywhere. With Mercury retrograde, you’ve been looking at various parts of your life and wondering what possible use they could have. You’ve been affecting repairs without much thought to what you might be rebuilding. This month, as Venus changes signs, the parts will all fall magically into place. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) In the movie Fantastic Voyage, scientists shrunk themselves small enough to travel through the human body. It featured state-of-the-art special effects which created awe-inspiring images of the structures in the human body. This month, the most important journey you embark on, though not quite so adventurous, encourages you to look deep within yourself to find answers. The cosmos is asking you to believe that more is possible than you’ve previously dared to imagine. You may not have a shrink ray, or develop magic powers, but you can have your own fantastic voyage of discovery. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) With both Mercury retrograde and Saturn in your sign it can feel as if you have a ball and chain attached to your ankle. You’ve learned to bear this burden gracefully. You’ve even managed to construct a wheeled cart, so that you can push it along beside you when you have a long journey ahead. But, this month, you’ll realise that the shackle has been unlocked. You’re free. Are you going to celebrate? Or start worrying about what you’re now going to do with your cart? The Grand Cross suggests that an apparent problem is really just proof of an amazing
opportunity. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) It’s no good having lofty ambitions if there’s no plan to make them a reality. And if your plan hasn’t a cat in hell’s chance of working, you might as well have no plan at all. Yet it’s not enough just to criticise established ideas for their obvious frailties. You need to be part of the solution, not the problem. This month you’re encouraged to break away from the past in order to explore the opportunities of the future. But you can’t do it alone. And you won’t have to! A moment arises when you discover just how much you, with the help of someone special, can make happen. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Let’s imagine, for the sake of argument, that you’re a nutty professor. After all, even if you don’t tinker with scientific gizmos and gadgets, you certainly love coming up with new ideas. So, here you are in your lab, when you realise that you’re missing a screwdriver. Rather than walking to the shop, you decide to create a teleportation device. It’ll get you there much more quickly. As Mercury turns direct and the Sun moves into your sign this month, surely anything is possible? Well, almost. Though Saturn’s influence on the Grand Cross grounds you in reality, you can still make an exciting and innovative discovery. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) This month, not only will you feel more love in your life, you’ll be more confident and assertive too. Does one feeling beget the other? Perhaps this situation is akin to the chicken and the egg dilemma. Actually, thanks to evolutionary theory, we now know that it was the egg that came first. And I’ll venture to suggest that by acting upon your convictions and being unafraid to approach the world, your ‘je ne sais quoi’ can become your ‘raison d’être’. With your unique style and visionary perspective, you’ll win yourself more than a few admirers. Be bold and you’ll enjoy January. NEW! Want to know what 2017 has in store for you? Call 1900 959 005.

Almost 1400 local residents participated in 120 different classes at the Bribie Island University of the Third Age (U3A) last year, and it is expected that numbers will increase in 2017.
More and more people are retiring to discover the inspiring range of learning and participation offerings at U3A. With major classroom extensions recently completed at U3A, student numbers have increase, and several new Tutors are offering new subjects of interest.
Many new and entertaining offerings such as “Burlesque on a Chair” will appeal to those with a wide range of abilities, while “Tap Dancing” is specifically for beginners, and “The Didgeridoo” can be studied and appreciated or even played. There is also an “Introduction to Dog obedience” on offer.
Many students enrolled for Term 1 classes at the end of 2016, but the next opportunity to join U3A and enrol for 2017 classes will be on two days in late January .
For those interested in “Australia” a chance to understand its history and geography in the context of Explorers and Settlers. Closer to home one can appreciate the local flora and fauna of “Bribie’s Natural Environment”.

This year will be the 25th Anniversary of Bribie Island U3A, during which time it has grown from a handful of people doing just a few classes, to one of the most successful and efficient U3A’s in Australia. There is something there for everyone...and lots of new friends, stimulation and laughter to be had.
Sixteen different computer courses are on offer with vacancies existing in some of the beginner and intermediate levels, as well as courses focussing on the Microsoft Office bundle of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) The teaching of languages (French, Indonesian, Italian and German), musical instruments (Keyboard, Guitar, Ukulele) and the many forms of Art and Craft generally require more than a short term commitment. laugh riot Do you have a maid? The maid asked for a pay increase. The wife was very upset about this, and decided to talk to her about the raise. She asked: “Now Martha, why do you want a pay increase?” Martha: “Well, Madam, there are three reasons why I should get an increase.” “The first is that I iron better than you.” Wife: “Who said you iron better than me?” Martha: “Your husband.” Wife: “Oh yeah?” Martha: “The second reason is that I am a better cook than you.” Wife: “Nonsense, who said you were a better cook than me?” Martha: “Your husband did.” Wife: increasingly agitated: “Oh he did, did he?” Martha: “The third reason is that I am better at sex than you in bed.” Wife, really boiling now and through gritted teeth: “And did my husband say that as well?” Martha: “No Madam....it was Phil the gardener.” Wife: “OK, how much do you want?” After being married for 48 years, a wife asked her husband to describe her. He looked at her for a while, and then said, “You’re an alphabet wife... A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K.” She asks, “What the hell does that mean?” He said, “Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful, Elegant, Fabulous, Gorgeous, and Hot”. She smiled happily and said, “oh that’s so lovely, but what about I, J, K?” He said, “I’m Just Kidding!”
Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance with shots fired arrive on scene. After discovering the wife had shot her husband for walking across her freshly mopped floor, they call their sergeant on his cell phone. “Hello, Sarge” “Yes” “It looks like we have a homicide here.” “What happened?” “A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just mopped.” “Have you placed her under arrest?” “No sir. The floor is still wet.” A hotel guest calls the front desk and the clerk answers, “May I help you?” The man says, “Yes, I’m in room 858. You need to send someone to my room immediately. I’m having an argument with my wife and she says she’s going to jump out the window.” The desk clerk says, “I’m sorry sir, but that’s a personal matter.” The man replies, “Listen you idiot. The window won’t open…. That’s a maintenance matter. It’s All About Timing! or Horses for Courses Late at night, a cop was patrolling, in a well-known area for “parking.” He saw a couple in a car, with the interior light on. He got closer to the car and saw a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine and a young woman on the rear seat, knitting. Puzzled by this surprising situation, the cop walked over to the car and knocked on the window. “Yes, officer? “What are you doing?” “Well, isn’t it obvious? I’m reading a magazine.” Pointing to the young woman, the cop asked, “And her, what is she doing?” The young man shrugged, “I believe she’s knitting a pullover.” The cop was totally confused. A young couple alone in a car at night and nothing unusual is happening! “What’s your age, young man?” “I’m 19, sir.” “And her, what’s her age?” The young man looks at his watch and said, “She’ll be 16 in 20 minutes.”
SENIOR JOKE OF THE WEEK The triumph of age and experience: A farmer stopped by the local mechanics shop to
have his truck fixed. They couldn’t do it while he waited, so he said he didn’t live far and would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store he now had a problem - how to carry his entire purchases home. While he was scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, “Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?” The farmer said, “Well, as a matter of fact, my farm is very close to that house I would walk you there but I can’t carry this lot.” The old lady suggested, “Why don’t you put the can of paint in the bucket. Carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?” “Why thank you very much,” he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way he says “Let’s take my short cut and go down this alley. We’ll be there in no time.” The little old lady looked him over cautiously then said, “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and have your way with me?” The farmer said, “Holy smokes lady! I’m carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?” The old lady replied, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I’ll hold the chickens.” The Best Divorce Letter, ever! FIRST LETTER: My Dear husband: I’m writing this letter to tell you that I’m leaving you. I’ve been a good wife to you for the last 20 years & I have nothing to show for it, and the last 2 weeks have been hell. Your boss called to tell me that you left your job today which was the last straw. Last week, you came home & you didn’t even notice I had a new hairstyle, had cooked your favorite meal & even wore a brand new nightie. You ate in 2 minutes, & went straight to sleep after watching your TV soaps. You don’t tell me you love me anymore; you don’t want sex or anything that connects us as husband & wife. Either you’re cheating on me or you don’t love me anymore; whatever the case, I’m gone. Your EX-Wife. Don’t try to find me. Your BROTHER & I are moving to New Zealand together! Have a great life! REPLY: Dear Ex-wife, Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It’s true you & I have been married for 20 years, although a good woman is a far cry from what you’ve been. I watch TV soaps so much because they drown out your constant whining & bitching. Too bad that doesn’t work any more. I DID notice when you got a hair do last week, but the 1st thing that came to mind was ‘You look just like a boy!’ Since my father raised me not to say anything, if you can’t say something nice, I didn’t comment...... and when you cooked my favorite meal, you must have got me confused with MY BROTHER because I haven’t eaten prawns for 7 years. About the new nightie: I turned away from you because the $299.99 price tag was still on it, & I prayed it was a coincidence that my brother had just borrowed $300 from me that morning. After all of this, I still loved you & felt we could work it out. So when I won the $20 million Lotto, on Saturday, I left my job & bought 2 tickets for us to Paris , but when I got home you were gone. Everything happens for a reason, I guess. I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My lawyer said that the letter you wrote ensures you won’t get a dollar from me. So take care. Signed, Your Ex-Husband, Rich As Hell & Free! P.S. I don’t know if I ever told you this, but my brother Carl was born Carla. I hope that’s not a problem. Send in your best jokes and give everyone a laugh! Another quality crab over 1.5kg
Wow now didn’t that year fly by quickly. With so much time spent on the waterways and beaches, it’s no wonder why. That’s the beauty of living in such a wonderful part of the world.Yes our backyard has many different options and beautiful places to visit. From a day over at Tangas, to a trip up the passage to Caloundra. Crabbing up the passage, to beach trips to the bunkers, then a slow cruise back through the Northern Access Track. These are just some of the a wesome options to fill in a couple of
days over the Christmas break. One thing to keep in mind over this period, will be the massive increase in vessels and jet skis using the waterways. Always ensure safety gear, battery systems, and all vessels equipment is in date and in good working order. Radios, GPS, Epirbs and flares should be checked for dates and ensure are working properly. Make sure you know all marine regulations and marine park rules and regulations as well. With so many people tubing, jetski ing, boating and fishing, it gets pretty

crazy out through the passage over the Christmas period. So always keep a good eye out for all other vessels and watercraft. Know all the regulations for skiing or tubing, and make sure kids/ adults have the correct jackets on. Yachts have all right of way, so give way to all vessels under sail. Common sense tends to go a long way too . Now back to what’s getting caught throughoutthe area at the moment.
couple of months. Longtail Tuna have also turned up in the bay. Live baits, Pilly or Slug/Plastics the best option for these two fish. The shallow reefs have also been firing up with some nice Red Throat, Moses Perch, Goldspot, Husser, Grassies, Snapper and Cod. Still some nice Snapper and Pearlies around the 65-120m mark.
Up the passage, Whiting, Muddies, Flathead, Jacks and Cod are all getting taken. Live Worms and Yabbies for the Whiting. Mullet, Tuna, Chook frames, for the Muddies. Live bait, lures, plastics nod flesh baits for the Jacks, Cod and Flathead. There has been a mountain of Baitfish around the Bridge at the moment. Jewfish, Mackerel, GT’s, Queenfish and Giant Herring patrolling the Bait schools. Plenty of Sandcrabs throughout the passage, and they are widespread from Lime Pocket Way to out in the Bay. The Mackerel numbers in the Bay have been pretty consistent over the last
The Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo, Dolphin fish and Marlin have also been working down the coast, over the last couple of months. Yellowtail King, Amberjack and pretty much anything else getting caught at the Hutchies Shoal. Just hard to pull the fish through the Sharks out there at the moment. Well a great time of year to get out and enjoy the fishing over the break. I hope that all the Islanders and their families have a safe and a we some festive break, and get out and enjoy hopefully lovely weather too. P.S. Tight lines and hope y ou have a great new year!

letters to the editor
Dear Editor, Thank you for taking the necessary action to correct the errors that occurred in your previous issue and acknowledging these errors as you have. I have been away for the past week and have only collected my issue from the Beachmere I.G.A. and I was pleasantly surprised not only for your apology (which I acknowledge) but for taking action in ensuring that the “Mad Poets Society” page was correct. The layout of the page was first class – I would go so far as to state that it is the clearest and best since its inception. Whatever action you took is a credit to you and your principles – congratulations. Best wishes for the Festive Season and may you have a safe and prosperous New Year. Merry Xmas to you and your Staff, Regards, Harold Meston ditor: You’re most welcome Harold! E Best wishes to you and your family, have a wonderful new year. Thanks for your contribution and help. Dear Editor, Thank you for the opportunity to respond and support C Frost for both his items in your last publication dated November, 2016. Waste of Taxpayers funds is a disgrace with much more deserving of criticism than only those few items mentioned in the C Frost letter. The Andrews payout of $1b for a Victorian road which was not built, the disgraceful antics of the CFMEU which adds huge costs to building infrastructure throughout Australia, the human and support costs required to comply with renewable energy targets, the payments to so called training establishments when no training is given. Where will it all end? Additionally we appear to have created Commissions which have either become power drunk or have lost sight of their reason for being. One only has to consider the HRC and give regard to their most recent exercises, the Bill Leak cartoon and the QUT computer lab fiasco, to ask is the cost to maintain these monoliths justified or is there a need to review their mandate? A cost benefit analysis perhaps. There is now a cry for a banking Royal Commission and to what end? What will it cost and what will the eventual outcome be if it does go ahead? Will it go in to the too hard basket like the Heydon Royal Commission into Unions? We now have an emasculated Government which is totally reliant upon a Senate which is intent on obfuscation. We have a Labor Party which is wholly dependent upon Unions for any policy or actions. We have The Greens who have no concern for unemployment created by their actions. Is there any wonder that Australians could feel disillusioned. Yours in frustration, John Davis (34107473) Dear Editor, Many of your readers will be aware of the changes about to be made to the assets test for age pensioners. As a consequence of these changes, a large
number of pensioners with modest savings will be worse off. Some, such as ourselves, will be facing reductions of over 60 percent of their current rate. Even allowing for budgetary concerns, a cut of this magnitude seems excessive.
Dear Editor,
Furthermore, such changes do little to encourage any saving for retirement and make planning almost impossible. Under the new rules, each $1000 in excess of the assets limit reduces the pension by $3 per fortnight or $78 per year. Since, with current interest rates, $1000 in the bank is likely to earn no more than $26 a year, clearly pensioners in this situation will be better off spending their savings and drawing the increased pension.
It is so refreshing to read a magazine that promotes our wonderful Island in such a positive way
One is left wondering whether this is really what the government had in mind when formulating the new policy. Yours faithfully, Cliff Fowler, Bellara Dear Editor, Letters to the Editor Is this what the PM is all about. With all the comments about the lack of performance by the Prime minister I saw something on the News which seemed to epitomise what our PM is all about? It showed Mr Turnball taking a selfie of him with President Obama at the Whitehouse. I could not believe that he was so self ingratiating? Mr Turnball stay home and get on with taking care of duties here rather than travelling around and getting photos for your scrapbook.
I recently had the good fortune of reading your December issue. It was well-written and contained many items of local interest, (even the adverts provided a useful tool when looking for services)
I feel you have found a niche that meets the community’s needs where other local magazines/papers have probably failed . I look forward to reading your next informative issue so keep up this quality standard. Thank you, Chris Cook Dear Editor, Almost forgot the other seemingly big Rip Off is the Telephone Companies that continually RIP OFF customers with PRE-PAID mobile phones. Why is it that after buying a $20 dollar recharge for a pre-paid mobile phone that the pre-paid recharge is CONFISCATED if not used within a month. It is absolutely a RIP OFF, it would be fair to have the recharge last 3 months rather than the one month. A lot of seniors use the mobile phone purely for emergencies, I challenge why it is a necessity to make you use the top up/re-charge in 30 days, start being fairer. Originally it was a lot longer (I believe up to 12 months).
Is it any wonder that we are not forging ahead and creating a better place for Australians.
ACCC where are you and what are you doing about such dealings, they are certainly not fair!
Consider saving at the top and get your Finance Minister to create the saving at the top.
C Frost
SUGAR Tax what ever next? Get real all that is doing is creating more revenue? Reduce the size of Parliament, stop paying over the top salaries to people you use to do your work, now wonder they are on a salary more than the PM. It is ridiculous, but then what are the media doing to keep the “Pollies” straight. Start considering reducing the Federal Government numbers, plus cost of State Government. Get rid of those who cannot do their jobs, I am referring to the Railways Minister, the “buck” starts at the top! Get off Pensioners backs, Unions etc., stop winding back hard fought for conditions etc. whilst always pushing those on high Salaries further ahead from the ordinary worker. Bring on “Grey Power” and more Independents who seem to have more common sense. I hope the “Pollies” come back refreshed from their huge holiday break and get on with running the Country better than they have in 2016. PS I wonder if the PM will be taking more selfies of him and his fellow Ministers before they go on their break? C Frost

English speaking countries (who 10 years and more of living here still cannot speak English). This is not racist but a burden on schools and infrastructure. I noted that the Parliamentarians rushed away for their 2 month holiday without voting on abandoning the perks and jollies they get on top of their lucrative salaries. To achieve success of a news print such as the Bribie Islander one must rely on advertising and the value of the advertising dollar to the business in getting out to the community using the service, a service well provided, you are to be saluted. How many billions go to such countries as Indonesia, or India etc.? Create essential jobs in Industries for the Future – Solar, Tourism, Farming, etc.. Stop Government Wastage on suggested plebiscites, schemes that do not come to fruition.
