LIFES CHALLENGES and OPPORTUNITIES REVEALED and lessons with the people of Bribie at a presentation on Friday 24th February at U3A. Diane is an internationally recognised speaker and author, who spent most of her life in Africa before moving here. She has experienced many adventures in her life that others would find very daunting, but these experiences have made her a survivor and thriver. She has canoed the Zambesi river, crossed the Tanami desert, raced cars, climbed glaciers, swum with Dolphins and been on many African Safaris. Married with two children, she spent many years living under the oppressive regime of Mugabe in Zimbabwe which shaped her views of life. Eventually she followed her heart and “eloped” with her first love, whom she had not seen in over 40 years.

DIANE CARTER will share her life experiences to U3A on Feb 24th

Readers of this newspaper have all had very different lives which have been lived in many different ways. How we cope and deal with life’s challenges can be very different.

One local lady has had very interesting and challenging life and has faced numerous physical and emotional challenges along the way. Her name is Diane Carter and she has kindly agreed to share her experiences

Diane Carters talk at U3A is titled “Life and Other Animals” in which she speaks from the heart about her personal experiences in a positive and passionate way. Her engaging and often humorous message is about the power of positive Mindset Energy, and provides inspiration to listeners about their own life and views of the world.

It’s about turning problems into challenges and focusing on solutions, about making the most of any situation, and developing an attitude for success. This will be your opportunity to meet someone who has even survived a wild animal attack. Diane’s new life on Bribie is as exciting as the life she previously led in Africa, so she will share her “never say die” attitude and show how to achieve success by embracing diversity and winning against the odds. The talk is on Friday 24th February at 1pm at the U3A Centre in the Recreation Hall on First Avenue. This “Life & Other Animals” presentation is open to members and the general public, but bookings are essential. You can add your name to the list on the notice board at U3A or phone U3A on 3408 1450 during office hours and register your attendance. There will be a $3 change for the presentation which includes afternoon tea served following the talk. Another interesting U3A “Insight” presentation is scheduled for Friday 10th March when Phillip Williams will reveal some remarkable stories and images on the subject of “Earthquakes and Tsunamis”.

DUMPING Due to the continual dumping of rubbish over the weekends, a practise that is costing us not only time but also funds that should be available to the many island associations we support; we have to resort to chaining off the car park after the shop closes on Saturday. Arrangements are being made to install the chain and we hope to commence this practise by the end of the month. We will make white bins available for clothing and soft toys deposits.

THE SHOP Finally, after 4 years of planning and building our shop extension is completed. We now have room for so much more stock including clothing, toys, shoes, bags, books,

linen, electrical, sporting and camping and furniture. Our opening hours are the same as before Monday to Friday 8.30 to 3 pm and Saturday Mornings 8 until 12. We arrange for delivery

We have been advised that we can prosecute people dumping unhealthy items, this is something we have not wanted to do in the past, but we no longer have a choice. We must try to stop the dumping; on Monday our bins are overflowing with rubbish that people will not take to the dump or just put it in their own bin. We have had to lease 3 commercial waste bins

SO PLEASE, if you need to get rid of rubbish do it correctly and do not use a charity as a dump, as we will check our security footage and report any dumping to the police in future. PICK-UP GOODS We don’t want to inconvenience anyone wishing to donate their preloved goods, so we will continue to pickup any donations that cannot be brought to the shop during opening hours, please call 3408 1014 to arrange a free pickup.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED With a much larger shop we require more volunteers to help us sort, check, price and place the many donations we receive, if you can give us some of your precious time we would be most grateful. We are involved with the new “Work for the Dole Program”, which helps young out of work people to obtain skills before they go on to arranged courses or permanent work. We are also registered with Volunteer Australia enabling us to accommodate the over 55’s ‘Volunteer for Newstart’ applicants. So come along and make some friends while helping your community, please call Sonia on 3408 1014 or drop into the shop to speak to her and take a look around. To finish on a positive note, I have included the list of items Busy Fingers donated over the financial year.

JADE PARKER from BMX to

When you hear that someone has achieved the status of world champion in the sporting arena, you are left with no doubt that they are blessed with the ability to totally dedicate themselves to achieving their goals in life, no matter what they may be and this would certainly be the most accurate way to describe Bootcamps Australia owner Jade Parker. After moving to Bundaberg with her family at the age of eight, Jade discovered the sport of BMX and due to total commitment and her seemingly natural talent for the sport, became a

respected competitor at both national and international levels. During her time in the sport, Jade was selected to train at the Australian Institute of Sport under very elite coaches and went on to become world BMX champion during her teenage years. Boot Camps Australia was started on Bribie Island about five years ago and, after her time at university, Jade began work there over two years ago. Jade is a qualified personal trainer and nutritionist and has been the owner of the business for over a year. Whilst still competing in BMX at a local level, Jade admits that

owning a business has meant putting her beloved sport on the backburner to some extent. Bearing in mind her previously demonstrated competitive nature, I was not surprised when Jade told me that she now competes in fitness competitions, not only as a way of achieving her own goals but also as a means to demonstrate what can be achieved by following the regime that she passes on to her clients. ‘I like to show those who attend the classes that I can walk the talk’ Jade told me. ‘At Boot Camps Australia, we are totally committed to helping

our clients achieve their goals and our classes extend over a range of subjects that include strength and endurance, boxing and teamwork, and we also have Boot Camp for kids,’ she added. As well as the classes on Bribie Island which are from 5.30am to 6.30 am on weekdays excluding Thursday, Boot Camps Australia also has sessions at Beachmere and Caboolture. Jade is looking to employ another trainer which will enable her to add extra classes to the timetable. Anyone who would like more information on Boot Camps Australia should contact Jade on 0466 538165.

A CENTRE FOR ALL VETERANS

Based in the Recreation Hall at 156 First Avenue is an organisation that has played what I consider to be an extremely important role in supporting Vietnam Veterans as well as other ex servicemen in our community. Their motto is “Honour the Dead but fight like hell for the living” and, after spending time talking to some of the dedicated people who man the

Vietnam Veterans Association Bribie Island & District Sub-Branch premises, I would have to say that this is exactly what they do on a daily basis. The Bribie Island branch was started in 1990 by a group of local veterans including Allan Robinson who became their first president. The Association was operated from the Bribie RSL building until 2005 when they gained a lease from council for the premises where they are now situated. Facilities at the premises are quite wide ranging and include computer and internet access, a library and of course, tea and coffee is always available to anyone who would like to call in for a chat or advice on issues that they are dealing with. ‘Probably one of the most important services that we provide is assistance with making claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs,’ association secretary Jock Young told me. ‘If the necessary paperwork is not filled in correctly, it can

create long term problems,’ he said. The Association’s aim is to assist all veterans and their dependants, and descendants in matters relating to their health, welfare and wellbeing. Current servicemen are welcome there as well as all exservicemen from all theatres, not just Vietnam. The Association has a meeting on the first Wednesday of each month at 9am which is followed by snacks and a cuppa. The Vietnam Veterans Association looks after the lawns and gardens surrounding the Recreation Hall and welcome any member who would like to help out, green thumb or not. Another task undertaken by members is the upkeep of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park opposite the RSL and this is done every second Thursday and followed by a BBQ breakfast. As a means of raising funds, some of which are donated to other worthwhile local organisations, the Association

Bribie Island Vietnam Veterans Association Inc

by Neil Wilson organises events such as triathlons and sausage sizzles. From time to time, activities including bus trips are held and Jock Young told me that these are all part of the important task of providing members with a way to be involved. ‘It is always important for them to have an opportunity to get out,’ said Jock. Anyone who would like to become a member or perhaps just find out more about the Vietnam Veterans Association should either call in to 156 First Avenue at Bongaree between 9am and 1pm or phone 3408 0405. With this area recognised as having one of largest numbers of veterans, the services provided by this association is so very important and I personally believe that those who make themselves available to help out should be congratulated for their dedication to helping their mates.

whilst they are trying to come inside. Then once visitors have settled inside and the door is shut release the dog from the mat. Otherwise the well trained dog will remain sitting them for a long time.

Training starts when there are no activities and it’s quiet at home. Teach your dog to sit on the mat and once he does, give him a treat. He will begin to associate good things with the mat. Then progress to him sitting on the mat and you walking to the front door by telling him to stay. If he obeys he gets a treat. Progression continues to you opening and shutting the door. Eventually working up to someone being on the outside, knocking on the door and you answering with your dog calmly sitting or lying on the mat. Remember to reward each step and only progress when he has successfully mastered the previous step.

legs), reduced activity, difficulty breathing, heat stress, cardiac strain and irregularity, and dilated pupils. The venom causes ascending paralysis of the nerves that supply the muscles, affecting the longest nerves first hence the paralysis appears to travel forwards, starting at the back legs. Pets can die suddenly from cardiac irregularities or paralysis of breathing muscles, or slowly from complications, such as inhalation pneumonia.

Another common problem owners have with their dog is stopping them escaping from the front door or an opened gate. It is holiday season where a lot of households have visitors or family members going out. A lot of dogs can’t resist walking out that door, most will come back inside with you but there are some that the opportunity to go walkies is irresistible. My recommendation is to place a mat somewhere in view of the front door (but not too close) and teach your dog to sit or lie on it whenever the front door needs to be opened. The advantage of this is not only to stop him leaving but if you have visitors it will prevent him jumping all over them

Happy training!

Care

During the warmer months, paralysis ticks are most active with potentially deadly consequences to people and their pets. These ticks are an Australian native and have evolved alongside native animals. Native animals are their normal hosts, and are immune to the paralysis and sickness characteristic of paralysis tick bite. On the other hand, humans and introduced animals, such as dogs and cats, are highly susceptible to the paralysis tick. Early signs of tick bite are: vomiting, wobbly legs (especially in the hind

Paralysis ticks are not very common in our local area but if you take your pet on a day trip even to Caboolture or Maleny, you may return with a tick. Tick antisera is expensive and dangerous to administer. Prevention is much better than treatment and there are some fantastic products available to reduce paralysis ticks by up to 98%. Bravecto or Nexgard are highly effective against fleas and paralysis ticks in our area. They are given by mouth and can’t wash off during swimming or washing your dog. If you find a tick on your pet, get it off as quickly and completely as you can, look for another tick (where there is one, there are often more), and contact your Veterinarian. During the course of our everyday life we are constantly interacting with people in a variety of situations and these can include situations such as saying hello to the neighbour, meeting friends for a drink, talking to those in the places where we do business and at times meeting someone for the first time without realising how much of an impact that person will have on your life in the long term. Sadly, two people who have had such a positive impact not only on my life but also on the lives of many others, will soon be saying goodbye to beautiful Queensland and leaving for the south. Everyone whose life has been touched by this wonderful couple can think of one or two special moments by which they will be remembered. ‘I remember when I went to pay for the place that I had just bought, he told them that I probably could not even write my name so for a laugh I signed my name with an X,’ was how someone described a memory that he had. ‘I always remember his dear wife for the lovely food that she used to bring when there was a party but I don’t think that I can remember a time where she lasted until the end of a State of Origin game,’ he said. In describing some of his memories of this couple who earned the respect of so many, another of their friends recalled the time when, during a trip to McDonalds on the way home from the RSL Club, a certain female made unintented contact

with a concrete block and deposited an armful of food on the bitumen. He also tells the story of the time when, during a trip on his boat, that woman’s husband seemed to spend more time falling into the water and trying to get back into the boat than he did sitting in his seat. ‘It used to have me a bit puzzled,’ said someone else that I talked to. ‘ I’d see him wheeling a fridge along on his trolley and then, a short time later I would see him going the other way with a different fridge on the trolley and this seemed to happen quite regularly.’ Actually, now that I think about it, I seem to recall how that trolley used to go missing on occasions and the poor bloke used to have to conduct a search of the area to find it,’ he added. Obviously, I also have a few special memories of the pair and no matter which of these comes to mind, it always seems to involve their never ending willingness to offer their help when it was needed although I never thought that anyone could become lost when leaving Caboolture hospital. Most people who have come to know them will tell of how for a time we heard so much about grief and then there was always a touch of romantic spirit to go with the lager. There are many more stories that should be told but I am not allowed to take up this whole publication. I guess that the only thing left to say then is, “Lorraine and Max, we wish you all the very best, enjoy whatever comes next in your life, we will all miss you. Adios.

islander extraordinaire John Gollan

very much at all. At age seventeen I had told God that I would always be prepared to go wherever he wanted me to and do whatever he wanted me to,’ he said. After thinking and praying about it I made the decision to look around for a suitable college where I could become more qualified to fulfil my promise to God and I began studies at the Adelaide Bible College in Victor Harbour, South Australia. In my third year there and with our family having grown with two more children, the local Baptist Church called me as their Student Pastor in 1974,’ John explained. He told me that it was then that he cut his teeth as a Pastor, performing his first wedding, officiating at his first funeral and other significant occasions. In 1998 John and Robyn felt that God was moving them on and, after packing all their belongings on a truck purchased from a logging company, the Gollan family headed for Sydney. Not long after this, John wrote in response to an article by David Morley, the General Superintendent of the Baptist Union of Tasmania who had commented that it was hard to entice men to move to the Apple Isle. An offer to take a trip there resulted in John being called as Pastor of the Somerset Baptist Church in 1979. Whilst there, John and Robyn were responsible for the commencement of a Christian school which is still operating now. John feels this was probably the highlight of their time in the area. ‘I feel privileged to have had that time there and we still have many friends there,’ John said.

Robyn and John Gollan cutting the cake at their farewell luncheon

Inviting Jesus Christ into his life at the age of twelve proved to be a decision that would determine most of the next fifty five years for retiring Baptist Church Pastor John Gollan. Born in the Victorian town of Kyabram and the eldest son of a farming family, John tells of how, after making the decision to move away from the daily commitment of operating a dairy farm, his parents acquired firstly a 320 acre mixed farm near Shepparton and after some time moved to a 500 acre mixed farm near Finley in New South Wales. As was normally the case with the sons of farmers, perhaps more so back then than in current times, John was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a farmer after leaving school at the age of fifteen and, of course, when that time came, John proceeded to do so. Sadly, very soon after this his father lost his life in a bus accident and, being the eldest, John had a farm to run. ‘As a family we thought about it and prayed about it and decided that, if we could establish a good crop for the season and the farm looked good, it would be the right time to sell up,’ John said. ‘We did this and moved to Sydney where, due to my uncle being a bank manager, I went to work in the field of banking,’ he said. ‘Whatever I have decided to take on I have always been the type of person who believes in giving 100 % and I knew that to progress in the banking industry

I would have to learn much more than I had during my schooling to date. I enrolled in night school and attained my high school certificate,’ John told me. ‘By this time I was at the age where I had to register for national service. It so happened that my number came up and the next thing I knew I was being trained to be a soldier,’ he added. John explained that, after basic training, he was posted for training in an artillery regiment and sent to 1st Armoured Regiment which was a tank regiment. ‘Tanks had been proven to be of little use in Vietnam so I was not sent out of Australia. Of course it was not long after this that our troops were withdraw from Vietnam and the national service guys were given the option of being discharged from service so I took that option,’ said John With the possibility of being sent to war behind him, John was able to fulfil a commitment made when he joined the army. ‘I went ahead and married Robyn who has been my wife and support from then to now. It had been decided that it would not be the right thing to marry before I had finished my term in the army due to the possibility of Robyn being left a widow or even worse a young mother without my support,’ John told me. ‘I returned to working at the bank but very quickly realised that I no longer enjoyed the job. By this time we already had one child and we were thinking that if this was all there was to life, then it was not

When asked by a friend if he would move to Gymea if God wanted him to, John’s answer was, ‘If God wants me to, of course I will.’ This resulted in the Gollan’s relocating to the area where John became the Pastor and also started home schooling in 1988. John accepted the responsibility of becoming the New South Wales co-ordinator for accelerated Christian education for home school families across the state. He continued in this role until he agreed to a request by the Director of the Australian Christian Academy that resulted in him relocating to Queensland in 1992 and becoming the first Principal of the Academy. This role meant that for six months each tear, John travelled around Australia and New Zealand conducting seminars on Christian education. After about four years in this role, circumstances saw John wondering what the future held for him and Robyn. For a time he worked as a business consultant and then as a book keeper for a company that was involved in making and restoring desks. After realising that this was not what he wanted, John began thinking and praying about what the future held and it was around this time that he received a call from some men who belonged to the Baptist Church on Bribie Island. They asked if he would be prepared to fill a preaching plan due to the previous Pastor having resigned and of course John did so and this was on June 8th, 2001. A week later John was asked if he would be the interim Pastor for three months while it was decided who to call as the permanent replacement. John was

eventually called to be the senior Pastor for the Bribie Island Baptist Church and this was a role that he filled for almost sixteen years until his retirement on January 31st, 2017. Having purchased a two acre property in Morayfield, John and Robyn have spent some time there each week as well as in the house belonging to their Bribie Church. During his time with the Bribie Island Baptist Church, John has worked tirelessly to provide support to various organisations that play an important role in the community including school Chaplaincy and school religious instruction programs. John told me that for some reason he had always thought of Bribie Island as Heaven’s waiting room but realised how wrong that assumption had been once becoming involved with the general community as well as the congregation of his church. ‘I would describe the members of the Baptist Church here on the island as “the youngest old people that I have ever met,”’ said John. ‘I feel privileged to have been here,’ he added. Talking about when it was the right time to retire, John said that this is a choice made solely by the members of the church. ‘I believe that God makes his will known through a company of Godly people,’ he told me. ‘I have always told the church members that whatever decision they make as to when they should call a new pastor, I will be content with that,’ he said. John says that he is very happy with the development and growth of the Bribie Island Baptist Church during his time here and has listed the commencement of the Sandstone Point Community Church as a very important event that he has been involved in. John will also be remembered for his commitment to the yearly Beach Mission which makes all young people welcome. ‘I am just an ordinary farmer boy who loves and serves an extraordinary God,’ John explained. The church will induct Pastor Ray Airosa into the position of senior pastor after John’s term has come to an end. Pastor Airosa comes here from Hervey Bay, is married and has three children. Robyn and John have a number of children who are spread throughout the country and even overseas with a son and daughter working as missionaries in the Ukraine. Only their youngest daughter who works at the Prince Charles Hospital still lives at home with them. Obviously the Gollans have no definite plans for their retirement although John told me that there is a chance that they may even visit their children in the Ukraine. ‘As far as taking up another role as a pastor goes, if I was to ever hear of a little church somewhere out in the country that was in need of someone, I would be prepared to take on that role at no cost to them,’ said John. John Gollan, the Bribie Island community has benefitted greatly from your time amongst us and I’m sure that all who have known you wish you and Robyn well for the future. Your devotion to helping those who required that help will be remembered as extraordinary.

CONSCIOUS LIVING What are you hungry for?

Are you world weary but hungry for life? What happened to your dreams and aspirations? Have they died a slow death, now buried beneath obligations and doubt? Or are you living your dream only to find that you’re not feeling as fulfilled, happy and energized as you thought you would? Do you feel lacklustre, waking up each day with a sense of just more of the same? Women are especially good at putting the needs of others first…caring so much that it hurts! When was the last time you did something for you? I’m not talking about getting your hair done, going on holiday or to the movies, I’m talking about going deeper. When was the last time you did something that re-kindled your inner spark, that gave you a renewed sense of who you really are, that helped you put your life back into peaceful perspective, that gave you hope for the future and relief NOW from the heavy burdens you carry? Isn’t it about time you did?

Follow the Sun Review

There’s a very special reason that you are here in this world, don’t hide it. Pain, stress or overwhelm doesn’t have to stop you, but often you don’t know where to turn for help, that’s why I’m inviting women to:

“When you feel life coming down on you, like a heavy weight. When you feel this crazy society, adding to the strain. Take a stroll to the nearest waters and remember your place.” Sometimes you needn’t even lift a foot to be taken to that place, but simply listen to a song made from the heart. Xavier Rudd’s, “Follow the Sun”, does just that. Xavier knits this story together with acoustic guitar, simply and solid drum beats, harmonica, beautiful sounds of Australian natural wildlife and narrates it with his iconic earthy voice. Overall, there is a wonderfully rustic feel to this song. “Follow the Sun”, is all about stopping, taking a breath and re-connecting back to the natural environment around you. It is a song of reflection. Often times in our life can get chaotic and confusing but a simple detour, an off road track perhaps, can get us feeling right as rain again. A “ridgy-didge” feel-good song indeed!

Bringing the First Car to Bongaree • Did you ever wonder about the first car trip made to Bribie Island? It was, of course, done 45 years before the bridge was built and when there were no roads at all on the Island. • In 1918 Artie Bestmann and Ian Hall drove a 1914 Talbot motor car from Brisbane to Bribie Island , the trip taking 2 days. A raft, which was used to bring cattle from Toorbul Point to Bribie Island was used to transport the car across the Passage. • It was appropriate that Artie Bestmann was the first to drive across the new bridge when it opened in 1963.

History of the Sunbeam Talbot Motor Car •T he car has an interesting history since its first trip across Pumicestone Passage. •A fter many active years travelling the beach and sand tracks on the Island the car was burnt when the shed in which it was housed caught fire. • The engine was salvaged and used to power a boat where it served for many more reliable years. •T hat particular motor boat was used to carry the soil for the first bowling green at Bribie Island Bowls Club.

WE CAME HERE BY SEA

by Neil Wilson

MV Mirimar. Photo credit: State Library of Queensland. As we go through life there will always be regrets about the things that we did or did not do and about happy experiences that we cannot fully recall. Whilst I am fortunate to have been a resident of our beautiful island for quite a number of years, one regret that I have is not being able to remember very much about the time that my parents brought me on a day trip to Bribie Island when I was only a small child. At that time we always holidayed at Scarborough on the Redcliffe Peninsula and I do remember that we came to the island on a vessel that ran a service from Brisbane to Bribie Island and called in at the Redcliffe Jetty for passenger pickups. This vessel was the MV Mirimar, a ninety six foot diesel powered launch that replaced the coal burning SS Koopa, a much larger vessel which was licensed to carry 1,153 passengers. The SS Koopa is arguably the most well

known of all the vessels that plied the waters of Moreton Bay and has a long history of service on the Brisbane to Bribie run as well as being used as a supply ship by the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. Built by Ramage and Ferguson in Scotland for the Brisbane Tug and Steamship Company, the 58.7m Koopa was launched in October 1911 and sailed into Brisbane on December 24th of the same year. Her name is an Aboriginal word that means “Flying Fish” She originally ran from Brisbane to Bribie Island via Woody Point and Redcliffe and the fare at that time was two shillings and sixpence. As well as a ding saloon that seated 100, she boasted a main and promenade deck, saloon, confectionery stall and was advertised as combining speed and comfort. Koopa plied the bay on this run for thirty one years until being requisitioned by the navy. After returning to Brisbane at the end of the war, and was

returned to her original owners in 1947 and resumed the Brisbane to Bribie service until her final trip in May 1953.

holiday makers was sent to be dismantled in October 1960.

My parents travelled on the Koopa several times before I was born and told me that, when the Koopa ran through heavy seas in Moreton Bay, she rolled quite a lot and there many sea sick passengers. These unfortunate victims of nausea would usually head to the side of the ship to vomit and there were times when too many were leaning over the rail on the same side. Of course, this caused the ship to develop an even greater lean and the captain had to order them back. This fiasco would occasional when everyone would head to the other side and on and on it went.

The MV Mirimar, was built in Brisbane by Norman Wright and Sons from Queensland timber and launched on June 13th, 1934 served in a number of rolls carrying passengers to the various bay islands which of course included Bribie. She also saw service as a supply vessel during the war with the Australian Army. As well as her time locally, she spent seventeen years in the North Queensland area as a tourist vessel and she was then returned to Brisbane in 1986. After being restored, the Mirimar spent the rest of her days sailing the Brisbane as a tour vessel and showboat until she was finally retired in 2009.

After plans to convert the Koopa for other uses were scrapped by the new owners, the Moreton Bay Development Company, this wonderful old ship that had been the source of many good memories for many

Sadly the days of going for a day trip to Bribie Island by sea have come to a close and I’m sure that there many tourists who wish they had experienced a trip here in the times when we came by sea.

I WONDER WHAT HE WOULD SAY

by Neil Wilson

Pumicestone Passage. It was strictly a case of making their way through the most accessible parts of bush and farmland as there was nothing even faintly resembling a road from Caboolture to Bribie Island at the time. Upon arriving at the shores of the Pumicestone Passage, Artie and Ian had to float the vehicle, a 1914 Talbot, across on a small barge that had been used to transport cattle from one side to the other.

I don’t think that there is anyone who could accurately estimate how many motor vehicles are driven on Bribie Island each day but whatever the number is, I wonder what Arthur Bestmann would say about it.

for bringing the first car to the island in 1918 and I don’t think that he would be able to believe his eyes if he was able to see the constant flow of traffic that comes and goes across the bridge each day.

A local bee keeper, dairy farmer and part time shopkeeper, Arthur “Artie” Bestmann was responsible

When we consider that to travel here from Brisbane the average time it will take is about an hour,

imagine what an arduous journey it must have been for Artie and his passenger, Ian Hall when it took them two days to arrive at Bongaree. Once they had driven what was not much more than a track from Brisbane to Caboolture, they were then faced with the daunting task of a drive through the scrub to get to

Once on the island, the Talbot spent many years travelling the beaches and sandy tracks of the area until sadly, it was destroyed when the garage where it was housed was destroyed by fire. Although this hard working vehicle was unable to be saved, it was a different story with the engine which, after being removed from the unfortunate Talbot, was installed in a boat. The vessel was then put to use, reportedly working around the area for quite some time and it apparently carried the soil for the first bowling green at the Bribie Island Bowls Club. Thank you to the Historical Society for posting some of the information necessary to write this article about the Bribie Island of yesteryear.

Natures Dance

FLYING THE THERMALS

Sharmayne Kurtz

Sharmayne Kurtz

Nature is a wonderful thing If you have the time in Spring To sit and watch a massive display Of how birds animals and reptiles play

Quiet and silent gliding high Floating on the winds in the sky Broad and open are your wings

Butcher Birds sit on our patio chair Waiting for dinner not a moment to spare For they have their young waiting you see Demanding something for their next feed

Brown and white like fingerlings Searching the ocean for your catch Keeping your young big and fat

The magpies have a different approach They will gladly eat your piece of toast But when you go for a morning walk They will swoop and dive with full force

Swooping down to the beach Checking out the old prawn meat Landing on the branch above Peering down for the reluctant dove

Now a morning walk can be a game of chance Bush pythons and their mating dance Just as we walk over the rise I saw a dark snake starting to glide

Your babies are waiting for their dinner I hear their calls your getting thinner No time to rest you ancient Mother

As I got closer would you believe Rearing like cobras at my knees Intertwined and stroking one another They rolled and coiled and danced with each other The pattern on the sand a mandala of time Magic serpents from a land gone by How intoxicating these reptiles glide Just by the ocean on the early morning tide

Raising your young again and again Nurturing and feeding until they mend Teaching them to fly until they are strong

So Woorim Beach has a wild habitat The locals and visitors must mark on their map The need for heath lands trees and grass Can be important message to link with the past This mating dance is as old as time So watch your footsteps and your behind The bush pythons balance the ecology of the bush How lucky we are in this Bribie nook

Mark Boyle

In a far off place, Down a long country road, I came upon a path, Where it went I did not know. Through the long tangled grass, Through the wire that was once a fence, I crawled and I climbed, Through each barrier, so dense. Pushing on through the scrub, The wire clawing my skin, Each vine and viscous thorn, Attempting to keep me from within. My drive was assured; I now, could not be stopped. I must know the secrets to all the things, In this place that had been lost. Memories of places, faces I had know. Friends and family, some now distant, Some now far from home. The pieces that had been lost, From the fabric of my mind. Perhaps had ended here, Behind this barrier of vines. What drove me to this place? Down this path, I did not know. Leaving the safety of my friends, My family. And my home. Perhaps we all need to walk down,

You fly over me and hold your pace Looking down and full of grace Your presence is a magical thing I wish I could fly but I don’t have wings Your nest is made of very large twigs You gather the wood as your ancestors did Your mate is there for the rest of your life Bonded by nature even in strife

Seasons come and season go But nature’s time clock is a magic show No matter what year or what lays ahead The mating season still goes ahead

In a Far off Place

Your nest is tendered they hug for cover You travel at the speed of light Here one moment and then out of sight

LIFE IS A JOURNEY Hazel Cameron (King) Life is a wonderful journey With many stops on the way, Some stops sad and others leaving behind a delicious feeling, Indelible memories, and newfound friends. Each stop has an air of excitement A discovery of new places, new friends, new interests, Leaving impressions on our minds and hearts Which no man can take away. New friends can touch our hearts with a tenderness only shared between two people discovering one another, Leaving silver meandering trails On the heart and soul. And beautiful memories, borne of sweet moments Sometimes shared in silence, Sometimes in the passion of the moment, Never to be forgotten on life’s journey. New places stirring up excitement, Opening wonder-filled eyes At new and thrilling sights Outside the sphere of one’s own space. New interests, creative moments, stimulating and inspirational, Crafts bringing out the artist in one’s character Limited only by the imagination, Total absorption in the craft at hand To the exclusion of all else. Life has many pathways. We reach a point at which we take the left or right fork The choice is ours and each fork leads to a different adventure. People cross our paths, each one leaving an impression Something of themselves, to be grasped and treasured As we leave something with them.

Allowing them to play until they are gone Osprey eagle your are a delight I watch you on sunset and in the morning light

It would seem as though some master plan Is continually at work in our lives Guiding, directing, gently enfolding when the times are tough. Never underestimate the importance of that plan for your life…..

The power and skill when you are flying high Is poetry in motion on the afternoon tide

Reach out, take hold and embrace your journey, Savour every breathtaking moment.

A path we have not been. Even if those lost memories we seek, Are lost and gone, Never to be seen. Will I find the answers to my questions? Will my needs be met with calm. Will I traverse this hidden world? And return to mine, unharmed. As I venture deeper onward, Consumed by forces unknown. I leave behind an afternoon walk, Down a lonely country road. But to my back I hear a calling, Like a voice from a distant time. My faithful dog is fearful, Warning me to return, as he demands.

Mans best friend some may call them. To me he had saved my life. With his bark ringing in my ears I turned away from my useless plight. I turn my back to my urges, And the dark forces that called me here. I close my ears to the gentle voice, That says he will calm my fears. With more strength than I thought possible. More effort than I thought I owned. I turned amidst the wire and tangle, And ploughed back towards my home. With hair all filled with burrs, My skin all scratched and scared, I emerged on that dusty road

Life is a journey…….

And lay there, heaving for breath So hard. My face was licked and nuzzled. He was sure I had been lost. Mans best friend now seemed the master, And I the useless mutt. I used him to get upright, And hobbled down the road. I no not what dark force drove me in there, But I was happy to be home. And as the moon rises that evening, My thoughts are clear and true. What would have become of me. If I continued to plough right through. Perhaps this is what has become Of so many people who stray. Vanishing without a trace. Until their body is found one day. I know now darkness is a force, With dark, deep pleasures to lure. It drew me in that afternoon. As I took that deadly tour. And as I lay here, safe and sound, In my bed all safe and snug. My dog lay silently at my side. My head still overcome. Was I really taken, My mind swept far away. I’m safe is all I can think of. It was not my time to go today.

THE SUPERMARKET DATE Sharmayne Kurtz It was at the IGA store and what do you know Elise was shopping to and fro All of a sudden there he was A big bold smile and his mind in a fog Hello chickie babe how about a date? She turned and looked her mouth a gape “How about a coffee this afternoon”? “Don’t be silly you big baboon” He slid up closer and he gave her a wink “How about a coffee my honeysuckle thing” “No not today or tomorrow as well But later next week does that gel” “Sorry “he said “It could only be today” “My cheque from Centreline is 6 weeks away” She stood and she pondered about his request So she decided to flick him and forget his bare chest The morale of this story and Elise’s shopping trip Take a list with you and you won’t be hit By that Prince charming in isle six Who thinks you are a bit of a soft touch For the Bowls Club meal or a nice lunch She may be old but her mind is sharp This smiling free loader was left in the park.

Growing pains of the heart – dependency/independency the world, being knowledgeable, being street-smart or culture-savvy). And contrary to popular belief, it is certainly not being independent from others. Actually, the thought of independency being at the height of maturity is extremely offensive.

Dearest Islanders, Happy Love Month! I pray thee have a plethora of people around you give you slices of love-cake in their smile, words, gifts, deeds or attitude. And that it be a season of ‘passing it on’ too… The coming of age is not a sudden growth spurt that happens at particular intervals or ages. Rather, it is a life-

long process of maturing as a result of wisdom. True maturation is not catalysed by hormones, it does not wait for you to reach a certain age to kick in, it must be desired and sought after. Diligence is required, but the reward is a very powerful and attractive and life-changing characteristic. To me, the mark of maturity is not age, status, wealth or success. It is not even life-experience (i.e. travelling around

If anything, independency is the epitome of immaturity. Independency says I do not need anyone and I can do it all by myself. It is selfish, highminded, stubborn and arrogant. Independency is not required to individuate. You are an individual from birth. A licence, a house, a job are all good things, but they do not govern your individuality but are birthed from it. Otherwise what happens if all of a sudden these things are taken away? Are you less of a person? Certainly not! What they do allow for is a platform to display to the world who you already are are, they do not make you who you are. I do have to pardon the identity that is found within family and a lifelong marriage-relationship however as we are intricately connected to these things. Independency is a lonely and embarrassing road. The good news is you can always turn around. Although, it does take maturity to do so.

Maturity is a muscle that you must work in order to grow. You must exercise it! It comes in the simplest of ways too, you’ll be shocked. It comes by exercising your ‘pleases and thank yous’. Real maturity is when you realise how much you really do need people (saying your ‘pleases’/ asking for help) and being grateful for help when it comes (saying your ‘thank yous’). It is not an embarrassing thing at all to admit, in-fact, it is so loveable, attractive and brave. The sooner we realise this the easier life becomes. I mean, nature doesn’t complain, it knows it relies on a whole range of factors to determine its welfare. Thus is the symphony of life. Dependency is the sum total of humility. And it is a very praiseworthy thing. In saying that, dependency does not give licence to laziness. It is not asking for the hard work to be done for you. It is knowing how to work as a team to get the job done quicker, more efficiently, more effectively and, well, more enjoyably! It’s just smart. To me, this is the true mark of maturity, the true mark of wisdom. Dependency is not defeat, it is deliverance!

Asian vegetables, beans, beetroot, capsicum, carrot, eggplant, leeks, onions and pumpkin are good quality and value-for-money. Sweet corn has fluctuated in quality and price in recent weeks and is eating well at a reasonable price. It’s the end of the Australian asparagus season with top dollar being paid for local and imported stock.

Salad lovers will struggle to find bargains on tomatoes or lettuce, both being firmly priced along with avocados, with the shepard variety

late, leaving a gap where New Zealand supplies of the popular hass variety can’t keep up with the demand.

Spinach is harder to source but you will still find reasonably priced mixed leaf salad, cucumbers and eshallots.

The heat has affected herb stocks with good quality coriander, continental parsley and dill hard to find and expensive but the remaining varieties are reasonably priced.

The best buys for school lunch boxes and snacks are cut watermelon and pineapples at bargain prices along with juicy peaches. Otherwise, look to value-for-money bananas, grapes, figs, kiwifruit, apricots and plums or cut up some rockmelon.

Some fruits are already firmly priced and expected to rise further including apples and navel oranges. Other firmly priced fruit includes all berries, valencia oranges, honey dew, lychees and nectarines.

The recent weekend sign-on was a huge success for the Bribie Island Soccer Football Club with player registrations exceeding last year’s numbers. John Aldous, club president, said that “2017 is shaping up to be our best year yet. The players are excited, I’m excited and there is a lot of enthusiasm around the club.” This year the club is fielding an over 35s team along with senior men and senior women teams. If you are interested in playing football the senior men and women both train on Mondays and Wednesdays with the over 35s team training on a Tuesday. There will also likely be pre-season senior’s games leading into the start of our season, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for all the details. Over the next few weeks we will be forming up our junior and Miniroo teams and working with our coaches and team managers to get the season underway. There are always opportunities to make a difference to our kids, so if you want to coach or be a team manager, let us know. THOSE ROMANS AGAIN

by Neil Wilson

Claudius had decreed that, due to his belief that married men did not make good soldiers, no soldier was allowed to wed. Valentine was eventually arrested and sentenced to death but, during the time leading up to his execution, he cared for his jailer’s blind daughter and apparently cured her blindness. On the eve of his execution he wrote her a note and signed it, “Your Valentine”. The Catholic Church then honoured Valentine’s death on February fourteenth by celebrating Saint Valentine’s Day. In the fifth century, Pope Gelasius I confused things more by combining Saint Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia to expel the Pagan rituals. Apparently it ended up being little more than the same old drunken feast but the Christians had put clothes on it. The day remained a day of love and fertility.

“All Roads Lead To Rome” the saying goes and this seems to even be applicable when one goes looking for information on some of our more recognised traditions. In light of this, it did not come as a surprise to me that Valentine’s Day can be attributed mainly to events that occurred in Rome in early times. Whilst in current times we associate Valentine’s Day with all things romantic, it would seem that the origins of this

day are a lot darker and slightly unclear. Historians have never been able to accurately pinpoint where it started but suggest that it was very likely to do with the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia when, from February 13th to 15th, men used to hit on women, literally. According to University of Colorado historian Noel Lenski, the Roman romantics were drunk and naked and during Lupercalia the young women would line up for men to hit them as it was believed that this would

make them fertile. This brutal fete also included a lottery in which men would draw the names of women from a jar and would remain with them for the remainder of the feast or longer if the match was working out. It is also likely that the ancient Romans are responsible for the modern day of love as we know it and the theory is that in the third century A.D., a priest named Valentine fell foul of Emperor Claudius II by agreeing to marry Roman soldiers.

As time went by, the day became more popular with poets and playwrights, (Shakespeare in particular) often romanticising about it. The sending of cards trimmed with beautiful lace became popular and, in later times, Valentine’s greetings were often sent as an anonymous declaration of affection. Today, this special day for lovers has become big business throughout the world and yearly expenditure associated with the Valentine’s Day tradition is estimated to be in the vicinity of twenty billion dollars. Whilst the name, the traditions and often the results of lovers’ attempts to woo the one of their dreams vary throughout the world, Valentine’s Day will always have a special place in so many hearts and be remembered by many as the day their dreams came true.

WHAT A WIZARD wizard when it comes to cleaning solar panels and air conditioners as well as domestic and commercial water filtration. After a quick phone call, I had my clean organised. Right at the agreed time, a knock on the door announced the arrival of my wizard in the form of Gary Young. After showing Gary where the system was, I stood back and left him to perform his little bit of wizardry which firstly meant removing filters and panels to allow him access to the grime and dirt that had built up in the parts that we as normal humans don’t realise need cleaning. Gary’s process begins with cleaning the filters and leaving them to dry and then he goes to work with his purpose built cleaner to remove the build up inside the unit itself. Always aware of the need to protect the surrounding walls, ceiling and floor, Gary incorporates the use of a large container which fits around the unit to contain the excess spray produced whilst cleaning is in progress.

Everything gets dirty, right? Of course it does and there are some things we clean ourselves whilst at times we rely on the services of someone with the knowledge and specialist equipment that can achieve a much better result than we can. I recently experienced a very pertinent

example of this when I organised for someone to carry out a thorough clean of my split system air conditioner.

After completing the cleaning procedure and returning the removed parts to the unit, Gary then insists on running the unit to not only assist in completely drying the interior but to gauge the difference in efficiency that has resulted from the clean. Whilst waiting for this procedure to run it’s course, I took the time to ask Gary a few questions about what I had just witnessed as well as the other main area of his business which is solar panel cleaning.

Fortunately, one of the many advertisers in The Bribie Islander is a business that goes by the name of Waterwizard and is operated by someone who is a true

‘Thorough and regular cleaning of an air conditioner results in improved efficiency, extends unit life and can also save on power,’ Gary told me. ‘Most people do

not realise that the interior of the unit needs to be cleaned as well as the filters,’ he added. ‘When it comes to the importance of having a regular inspection and clean of solar panels, Gary told me that there are several advantages associated with the process. ‘Clean solar panels have a much reduced chance of deterioration as well as providing improved power output which obviously saves money,’ Gary said. Sitting down after the Wizard had packed up his wand and left, I had the chance to reflect on my decision to use his services and to ask myself was it worth it. The only answer that I had to that question was, “Definitely”. After my personal experience and hearing what Gary had to say about the importance of the work he performs, all I can say is, call the Waterwizard on 0402 018047. We all need a wizard in our life at times.

THE BRIBIE WINELANDER The Swan Valley area of Western Australia is a wine growing region that lives in the shadow of Margaret River and The Great Southern wine growing areas, yet Houghton Wines was established in 1836 around 130 years before Margaret River was considered as a potential grape producing area. Only four years after the fledgling colony of Western Australia was founded by three British Army officers, a vineyard was named after one of them Lt. Colonel Richmond Houghton, and started producing wine early afterwards with the first commercial vintage a modest 25 gallons in 1859. In 1880 they won their first award, the ‘Order of Merit’ at The Great Melbourne Exhibition and this became the first of many triumphs that have paved the way for Houghton to become Western Australia’s most awarded winery. Last year at the 2016 Western Australian wine show the company was awarded an impressive 8 trophies including Best Wine of The Show and Best Shiraz.

Jack Mann’s best known creation was The Houghton White Burgundy or Blue Stripe which was distinctive on the label first crafted in 1937 and is still one of Australia’s favourite white wines to this day, although the wine now goes by the name Houghton White Classic. Those of you that read this column regularly are aware of the support I have given to the Houghton Classic Range as I believe they represent fantastic value for money across the whole range and those of you with an eye to the future could do no worse than to cellar a couple of dozen of the White Classic for five years or more and be rewarded by a white wine that improves with age. I bought Several of The White Classic, The Red Classic and The Cabernet Sauvignon from BWS and Liquorland recently for the absurd price of $7 per bottle which is probably about half the recommended price and one reason why Houghton is now the tenth largest red and white bottled brand in Australia.

Houghton has had just 13 winemakers in its rich history and under their custodianship have produced wines with a remarkable consistency of style. In 1922 a 16 year old Jack Mann, under the guidance of his father George, began his winemaking apprenticeship at Houghton and became the driving force of the company for 51 consecutive vintages and he brought passion, creative genius and influence far beyond Houghton, to the whole Western Australian wine industry.

However Houghton is not restricted to producing wines solely from The Swan Valley and has in recent years developed vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and The Great Southern which gives it access to premium red and white grape varieties which add to their value for money Swan valley range. For those of you that have the resources to purchase top drawer wines I would suggest The Jack Mann Cabernet a single vineyard wine from The Frankland River region,

The Houghton Gladstone Cabernet Sauvignon, which recognises Doctor John Gladstone who first saw the Margaret Rivers wine growing regions potential. The Crofters Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon, The Wisdom Range from Margaret River and Pemberton, The Houghton Margaret River range (on price reduction in Liquorland) and The Bandit Cabernet Sauvignon. On a lighter note I had the pleasure of hosting a Houghton tasting/lunch a few years ago with a business men’s club in Perth and after winemaker Ross Pamment had concluded his excellent presentation he approached with an “excuse me Mr. Arlidge do you recognise me”? Taken aback by his politeness I had to admit I didn’t and he reminded me that over thirty years before I had coached The Wycombe Wanderers under 12 soccer team and he was the goalkeeper. He had indeed changed! Houghton has been subject to several take overs in their history, in 1950 the vineyard was acquired by The Emu Wine Company of South Australia which in turn was purchased by Hardy’s in 1976. The current owners are The Accolade Wine Group, a global player whose other labels include Hardy’s, Stanley, Leasingham, Reynella, Grant Burge, Omni, Arras, Bay of Fires and many other labels from around Australia, New Zealand and The Americas.

Writer D.H. Lawrence pulls no punches in a letter to short story writer Rhys Davies on his feeling about Spanish Wine. The Spanish wine, my God it is foul. Compared to Champagne it is catpiss, this is a sulphurous urination of some aged horse. It would be interesting to market such products, thank goodness modern winemaking techniques have changed all this, Spanish Wines are very good today! Mark Twain had a few similar words about German Wines. The Germans are exceedingly fond of Rhine wines, they are put in slender bottles and are considered a pleasant beverage. One tells them from vinegar by the label. Don’t mention the war!

Making Choices for a Good Life.

They say life is from B to D; birth to death. So, what is between B and D? It is C and this is about CHOICES! Our life is all about our choices. By Veronica Mercer, (Mental Health Accredited Social Worker) At some point in our lives we all ask ourselves ‘What is the purpose of my life?”, “Why am I here?” If anyone has the answer, please let the rest of us know. In my practice one of the basis for many client issues is around trying to fit in and manage their lives. A great deal of this is associated with being happy and feeling useful. There is no doubt all of us need to hang on tight on this rollercoaster ride of life. Whilst holding we must also be aware of needing to seek the knowledge and opportunities that will aid us in making good choices for ourselves. One of the aims of counselling is assisting us to look at the way we think about situations, how we respond and to help us make sense of why we feel and think the way we do. This is critical when we are making important decisions; like those through life’s transitions and when the choices we have made or intent to make may have negative repercussions for us and/or for others. There are numerous aspects to the purpose of life, but today I want us to explore one aspect; free-will if you like; that is to make choices/decisions. There are many things that impact upon our decision-making and some that can leave you feeling like you have made the ‘wrong’ choices in life. Unfortunately, we do not come into this world with a set of instructions or a road map. In its simplest sense, decision-making is the act of choosing between two or more courses of action. There are several components we need to consider when

making choices. 1. I ntuition where we use our ‘gut feeling’ about choices. 2. R easoning is where we use the facts and figures in front of us to make decisions. 3. E motional attachment can make it difficult to decide because this often involves a change process; and we find change difficult. There is no doubt that our modern world; developed countries; consist of a series of choices which would have absolutely “gob smacked” our forbearers; whom had little choice of the work they did, where they lived, or even what they thought. The choices we make will be fateful and determine; in good measure; how we live our lives and importantly how we feel about our lives. Tips for considered decisionmaking. 1. L et go of any fears associated with making the wrong decision. Remember that failure is a prerequisite for success. Identify and create options; think outside of the box.

thought over another. 4. T ry and be ‘Open Minded Action’ and make a choice but don’t get too attached to the outcome. Try to not allow emotions to drive your choices. 5. L isten to your ‘instinctive’ feelings around decisions you’re about to make. Do not confuse ‘instinct’ with ‘desire’. Try sitting with your choice for a while to see if it ‘lingers’ before taking any action. Trust yourself, remember that there are no guarantees and wrong decisions are always part of hindsight. So, choose... decide... believe that you are choosing the best option at the time. 6. R eflect upon your values. Ask yourself “Is what I’m about to do for the benefit of everyone involved?” 7. T ry and have a balance between your head and your heart –don’t throw logic out of the window, it’s important to listen to your gut. Instead, learn from it and remember that you always have the chance to make better decisions in the future.

2. A ccess as much knowledge about the given situation before making any decisions. Be well informed.

8. R emember that poor choices are always at hindsight; which is how we learn from our mistakes. We are human and living is about learning with the purpose of making the world a better place for all of us.

3. I f the voice inside your head is starting to repeat its-self, switch it off! Try getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper to structure your thinking. Stop over-thinking and remember we get to choose one

Perhaps it is that “Each man must look to himself to teach him the meaning of life. It is not something discovered: it is something moulded” Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve. This thing called “freewill” is perhaps the “thing” that makes

us unique and allows us to do what feels right in our hearts and our minds. It allows us to make sound choices specifically for us and our circumstances. I can remember as a child, hearing my Grandfather talk about his legacy. I learnt much later in my life that this was how my Grandfather saw his purpose in life; in what he left behind, his children and grandchildren. His purpose had been to raise his family, and teach them right from wrong. I can see now that his choices certainly centred around his family and their wellbeing; he worked hard and was a loving and caring man. It was his choices that gave him purpose. I have a strong sense of us all being part of a ripple effect. Mother Teresa summed it up well “I alone cannot change the world, but I can caste a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Our choices are the stone and the ripple effect is the outcome of those choices and quite possibly from which our purpose originates? The Dalai Lama states that “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from our own actions”. He also states that “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others, and if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them”. This is a choice that we all can make, because with good intent one person can make a difference as can a community, a nation and all of humanity. Wishing you all good mental wellbeing – Veronica Mercer (Mental Health Accredited Social Worker)

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

THE QUIRKY HUMOUR OF SIR HARRY SECOMBE in the army. Sir Harry: Yes. The Long Range Snipers. John: What on earth is that? Sir Harry: The Royal Field Artillery! And when Secombe visits the Falkland Islands to entertain the troops after the Falklands War, his old regiment promote him to the rank of Sergeant – 37 years after he has been demobbed. As Sir Harry and Lady Myra walk us through each cosy room with arches, high ceilings and a relaxing atmosphere, we come to the master bedroom with a huge window, taking advantage of the spectacular views below and beyond, including the fish pond encircled by tall Rhododendrons in full bloom. John: What a tranquil view! Sir Harry: Yes, on a quiet day you can hear the fish fart! Helly Kemp Sir Harry Secombe may have captivated the world as the comedy genius, entertainer, singer, actor, author, broadcaster, director and TV presenter all of which he is - but I love him mostly for his innate, quirky sense of humour and spontaneous wit. Since knighted in 1981, Sir Harry jokingly calls himself ‘Sir Cumference’ in recognition of his rotund figure, with the humorous motto on his coat of arms ‘GO ON’ as well as the court jester, both referring to the outrageously funny, 10-year-long Goon Show Series. This show set the British humour for the 1950’s, where Secombe starred as the hero Neddie Seagoon in the crazy company of Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan. But we also love Secombe in his films like ‘Oliver’ and the ‘Pickwick Papers’ as Mr. Bumble and Mr Pickwick. So it is a real privilege in 1991 being invited to photograph the Surrey hilltop country home of Sir Harry and Lady Myra. What a tranquil change from their previous house in Cheam, where, at the busiest of bus stops the conductor would always shout, “Harry’s Corner!” Here in a 3-storey, 4-bedroom Listed Victorian House at the end of pastures, farms and winding hills, the Secombes have finally found their dream house. Although their four children, Jenny, Cathy, Andrew and David , have their own families now, each still has a room of their own in the house as well, and everyone enjoys the picturesque 9-acre grounds. As I approach the elegant front door on arrival, Sir Harry welcomes me, and noticing my John sitting on the bonnet of the car, calls out, “What are you doing out there, lad? Come on in!” And that is the end of my interviewing Sir Harry, as I don’t get a word in edgeways after that. Instead, this lovely summer afternoon turns into a hilarious, veritable Goon Show, once John mentions how he always used to rush back from the NAAFI not to miss the Goons on the regular 1800 Club show. Sir Harry: Which regiment were you in? John: The Guards. I know you too were

As we leave the bedroom, John comments on an unusual door stopper on the landing just outside the bedroom door. It is a horse’s hoof and lower leg up to the fetlock joint. And now there is no stopping Sir Harry with his stories: “One rainy afternoon in Paris, Peter Sellers, Brigitte Bardot and I were going for a walk, when I noticed this strange door stopper in an Antique shop on the opposite side of the street. So I hopped across and bought it. “Then, before calling out to my party on the other side, and wearing my Trilby and raincoat, I stayed just outside the shop’s doorway, lifted my own leg and settled the horse’s one under my right knee . From across the road this looked very authentic. Peter was in uncontrollable laughter, while Brigitte went into squealing hysterics.” And Sir Harry nearly goes into hysterics himself one night recently on returning home one Sunday night from his ‘Songs Of Praise’ TV series trips. He is totally clueless why an assortment of TV vans and crews are buzzing about like busy bees in front of his house. This is a surprise Lady Myra has arranged in his absence. Yet even once inside the house Sir Harry still can’t see what has happened. Then he spies it at last! Lady Myra has had his humorous personal ‘Goons’ coat of arms installed as a stained glass leadlight in a large pane of glass, right in the centre of the gigantic entrance hall window. As we keep wandering further throughout the house, you can understand why Secombe is called ‘The Book Fanatic.’ There are book cases everywhere not just in the library. So far, Sir Harry has published seven books of his own: children’s, fiction, documentary and biographical. Currently he is working on his autobiography and there will be more books. But it’s not books Sir Harry wants to talk about right now. It’s supermarket plastic bags! He recalls the day when Spike Milligan turns up at his doorstep unexpectedly. Sir Harry: What are you doing here? Spike: Could you put me up for a night or two?

The Listed Victorian House

Sir Harry: Yes, of course, but why? Spike: I’ve sold my house today! Sir Harry: How much for? Spike: All this! And with an extended movement of both hands, Spike stretches apart the handles of the carrier bag - his only luggage - a shopping bag filled to the brim with money. Well, this afternoon has certainly been our money’s worth. As we are leaving and Lady Myra shows us to the door, I wonder why Sir Harry has disappeared without saying goodbye. How Strange! We walk to the car and turn around to take one last look at the yellow shuttered house ,when lo and behold, standing in the doorway, in full regalia, Trilby, trench coat and horse’s leg under his knee, the great comedian waves us goodbye! AUSTRALIAN BRUSH TURKEY

Clerodendrum floribundum

Alectura lathami Brush Turkey

Lolly Bush - Fruit

Lolly Bush Flower I found a few interesting, spread out and straggly bushes growing at the edge of two separate eucalypt forests on Bribie Island. The white flowers with long stamens were quite impressive but the fruit are what caught my eye. It is from the fruit with the black seed surrounded by a red star that the Lolly Bush got its name. Even though the fruit look good enough to eat they are not edible for humans. Lolly Bushes grow in NT, Qld, NSW and PNG. They are about 3-5 m high. Birds and insects are attracted to the nectar and fruit. Their nectar is a favourite food of the Hawk Moth and the leaves are host to the caterpillar of the Fiery Jewel Butterfly. Indigenous Australians used the Lolly Bush in many ways. The main roots were used as a

food source. They have a starchy flavour and were roasted before eating. A concoction was made from the wood and used as a medicine for aches and pains. Sticks from the Lolly Bushes were rubbed together to create fire. It was believed that water could be found close to where the Lolly Bushes grew.

Mound building on Bribie Island

Shifting leaves and large sticks

Australian Brush Turkeys are megapodes which are birds that build large mounds of leaf and vegetable matter where their eggs are incubated. They are fairly common in the bush areas on Bribie Island but sometimes come into the urban areas to build their mounds. This causes them to be unpopular with some residents if they decide to build their mounds in garden areas.

to lay. Males tend the mound and eggs till the chicks hatch. The eggs are incubated by the warmth of the decomposing vegetation. It is vital that they are kept at just the right temperature which is 33-38 degrees and the males regulate this by moving the foliage. Their beaks are sensitive to temperature and they are able to gauge this by inserting their beaks into the mound then adding or removing foliage as needed.

A great deal of work is done by the male birds to construct a mound well enough to catch the eyes of prospective females. They use their large strong feet to scratch leaf matter from sometimes quite a distance away into a large pile which will eventually become the mound up to 4 metres in diameter and approximately 1 metre high. I once watched a male move leaf matter from an area some 30 metres away from the mound even scratching the mulch across a bitumen road .Their mounds often have to be defended from rival males. Females will decide on the best mound in which to lay their eggs. If the mound is well built several females may decide to lay their eggs between September and February. They are laid in a circle along the outer edge of the mound. Up to 50 eggs from several females have been found in a single mound. After laying the females wander off and maybe find another mound in which

Lolly Bush samples were first collected by Sir Joseph Banks from Palm Island during the exploration up the Queensland coastline by Captain Cook in 1770. Banks later ordered that copperplate engravings be made of samples collected. Clerodendrum floribundum was a very attractive piece.

Brush Turkeys grow to a length of about 75 cm and have a wingspan of approximately 85 cm. They can weigh up to 2.27 kg. Males have large yellow wattles on the neck which become larger and brighter during breeding season. Juveniles and females have a dull yellow skin on their necks. They are ground dwellers and do not often fly. Insects, seeds and fruit are their staple diet. They are normally quiet but sometimes make soft squawks. Males make a deep booming sound. Early settlers hunted Brush Turkeys for their meat and raided their nests for eggs. They were killed and eaten extensively during the depression till they were almost extinct during the 1930’s. Laws were introduced to protect them and now their numbers have increased considerably and their conservation status has become secure. Brush Turkeys and their eggs were also a favourite food for the aborigines.

Lolly Bushes are also known as Lottery Trees. The word Clerodendrum comes from two Greek words - cleros meaning chance lottery and dendron meaning tree. This probably is in reference their chance healing qualities.

There are three species of megapodes in Australia. The Mallee Fowl and the Orangefooted Scrub Fowl are also megapodes. Megapodes are the only birds to use a natural incubator to hatch their eggs. The word megapode is derived from two Greek words – Mega meaning large and poda meaning foot. They are sometimes referred to as Bush Turkeys.

I photographed the flowers in October, the fruit in November when the centres were green and in December when the centres had turned black. Conservation Status is of least concern.

By Marj Webber Lolly Bush - Fruit

Males defend their nests and will vigorously attack predators such as snakes, monitors, dingoes and foxes that come to steal the eggs. The eggs hatch after about seven weeks. When the chicks emerge they are immediately able to fend for themselves and have no need to be looked after by the parents. Chicks have a very small survival rate having about 1-200 chance of surviving predators such as raptors, foxes and cats. Mounds are used for several years and each year more vegetation is added.

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FEBRUARY MONTHLY FORECAST FROM OSCAR CAINER

Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. With Mars conjunct Uranus opposite Jupiter, and Jupiter trine Uranus and two eclipses, February is under a shadow of hefty astrological influences! But being in shadow doesn’t mean that we have a cold dark time ahead. Far from it, there will be plenty of sugary treats to help any medicine go down. The Lunar Eclipse forms two aspect patterns known as ‘Kites’. These are like Grand Trines with the wind in their sails. So can we reach the highest heights promised by Ms Poppins? The Solar Eclipse suggests we can!

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Why do people turn minor concerns into big issues? It may be because they inwardly feel that this will help them to keep even bigger issues at bay. If they keep themselves busy with small stuff, they won’t have the time or the energy to tackle anything else. But big issues aren’t always problematic. As Mars conjuncts Uranus, in your sign this month, a situation that you’ve been inclined to see as major, may prove to be well within your capabilities. The solar eclipse urges you to concentrate. You can easily adapt to your new target. Discover why February has so many opportunities. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Have you ever rallied to a cause and then found yourself sharing a platform with people you’d normally distance yourself from? It’s in such moments that we have to consider whether the change we wish to bring about is important enough for us to compromise some of our values. This month, context is paramount. You can achieve something that will have great influence on your day-to-day life. Yet, it may cause you to distance yourself from an old path. By embracing the new way, you’ll discover a new, more compassionate you. There is inspiring news in your in-depth February forecast. Call 1900 959 005. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) Since the dawn of time, great philosophers have pondered both the meaning and mechanism of existence.

Some concluded that the universe is intrinsically perverse. It has been designed to ensure that nobody ever gets exactly what they want. Let’s hope they’re right. Because, if so, there’s a loophole in the cosmic law! All you have to do is want not to get whatever you want! Then, you’ll have to get it… won’t you? With Mercury speeding through the sky, you can perform mental gymnastics. And there’s no end to what you can achieve. Your in-depth forecast for the whole of February can really help. Call 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) We can’t take success for granted until we hold its results in the palm of our hands. Even though they say that seeing is believing, our eyes can be fooled by a simple trick of the light. The real proof comes when we can touch, grasp and benefit from the results of our endeavours. Yet the physical manifestation of desire means nothing if our spirits aren’t lifted by our achievements. We need to feel the effect in our hearts. This month, look beyond the superficial. The meaning you seek is hidden deep below. Dive right in. February is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) We applaud great illusionists who can apparently make something out of nothing. When they reach into their top hats and pull out rabbits, or unfold their silk handkerchiefs to produce doves, we’re highly impressed. Yet what truly takes skill, and is far less often appreciated, is the ability to pour oil on troubled waters, and bring calm to situations that have been tense and full of potential for conflict. This weekend, with a solar eclipse conjunct Neptune, you can expect to be blessed with the helpful ability to make nothing out of something. In February, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) I can’t write your forecast today, I’m much too thirsty. Could you bring me a glass of water? Good. On your way, could you pop to the shops, as I’ve run out of bread. No, not the supermarket, I need one of those special loaves from the artisanal bakery. Thanks! Hang on. Does it feel

as if you’re doing too much for someone? Think again, about the division of labour, and how you view a key partnership. Oh, it looks like I’ve written your forecast without requiring your services! Perhaps you can afford to relax after all. February brings great potential for change. Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) You don’t have to be fair. You’re under no obligation to dispense justice, or even to act with reason. Plenty of people consider themselves to be excused from such social requirements, and they appear to get clean away with their acts of staggering selfishness, so why shouldn’t you? But then, ‘doing the right thing’ isn’t something we do for the benefit of others. We do it because we know it makes us feel good. As your ruler moves into your opposite sign, you’d like to encourage a sense of harmony. How can such a noble plan be wrong? Four minutes on the phone can make February special. Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) The most inspirational artists play with imagery. Even musicians, whose art is invisible to the eye, paint pictures with their lyrics to further their art. Life’s asking you to channel your inner David Bowie this month. His work captured our imagination through the exploitation of images. It wasn’t enough for him to master the sonic arts. The pictures he painted performing his work shocked, delighted and explored the frontiers of creativity. Don’t be afraid of the ch-ch-changes life now instigates! Even amongst the challenges, all Scorpios can be heroes. Inspiring times await you in February. Call your NEW forecast: 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Normal procedures need not be followed or, at least, not strictly in accordance with the usual protocols. Such times occur more often than we might imagine, but they’re rarely advertised or announced. Those who know, tend to keep the information to themselves. Those who don’t know just follow the rules and never even realise that they could have broken them. I’m not saying you can get away with anything this month. But as Mars conjuncts Uranus, during a solar eclipse, where it looks

as if you can push your luck, you probably can! Be ready for the magic on offer to you in February. Call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) If you want to make an omelette you’ve got to break some eggs. And if you want apples to fall into your lap, you’d better shake that tree! But if we’re not careful, we have more than just apples landing at our feet. Sometimes, we find ourselves struck, like Newton, by revelations that transform our lives. Like an egg that’s been broken, we can’t just put everything back the way it was. This month you’re leaving old processes behind, and creating the opportunities you seek. Don’t pine for the past. You’ll soon have reason to justify your sacrifices. February brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1900 959 005. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Endings are never easy. Unless we’ve reached the point where a situation has become untenable, we can’t help but regret the realisation that things can no longer be as they were. Yet every ending is rapidly followed by a new beginning. With Mars conjunct Uranus, at the Solar eclipse, look at what’s about to start for you, and allow yourself to be inspired. And if, as the Sun moves out of your sign, there’s something you feel you’ll truly miss, there may yet be a way to keep the very best part of it current. You’ve more options than you think. Don’t miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for February. Call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) It often feels as if the more we know, the less we understand. That every answer leads to more questions, queries and searches for truth. And, with some subjects, we have to learn to live with mystery. At times, this month, you may feel less confident… not quite so sure about what you really value. Though the cosmos is asking you to re-examine some of what you’ve learned, it doesn’t question who you are. Quite the opposite. So, don’t let doubt creep in. Be true to yourself, and explore your imagination. A great journey begins with an open mind. Your in-depth forecast for February is ready. Call 1900 959 005.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Stewart and said “By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t, I am impressed!”Stewart replied, “Well, to tell you the truth I almost said something when Barbara fell out, but you know, seventy quid is seventy quid !!

Many people had tried, over the years:

The Winter Boots (Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this)

weightlifters, longshoremen, football players etc., but nobody had ever been able to do it.

Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her pupils put on his boots?

Cabernet Sauvignon may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use it. However, women who wouldn’t mind nursing or becoming pregnant are encouraged to try it.

One day, this scrawny little fellow came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit.

He asked for help and she could see why.

At a local bar in Tamworth The owner & bartender, was so sure that he was the strongest man around, that he offered a standing $1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and then hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze two more drops of juice out of it, would win the money.

He sat down, ordered a glass of draft, & started looking around the bar. After reading the sign on the wall about the lemon challenge, he said in a meek voice: “I was just reading your sign, and I’d like to try the bet.” After the laughter in the pub had died down, the bartender grabbed a lemon and squeezed the heck out of it..... Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little fellow. The Crowd’s laughter turned to total silence.... as the man clenched his little fist around the lemon....

Even with her pulling, and him pushing, the little boots still didn’t want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, ‘Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.’ She looked, and sure enough, they were. Unfortunately, it wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off, than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet.

and six drops fell into the glass.

He then announced, ‘These aren’t my boots.’

As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the guy his $1000, and then asked little man:

She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream, ‘Why didn’t you say so?’ like she wanted to.

“Do you mind if I ask what do you do for a living?

Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet.

Are you a lumberjack, a weight-lifter, or what?”

No sooner had they got the boots off when he said,

The little fellow quietly replied:

‘They’re my brother’s boots. But my Mom made me wear ‘em today.’

no “I work for Australian Tax Office”.

Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past and you will discover many talents you never knew you had. Stop hiding and start living.

Side effects may include: Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, loss of motor control, loss of clothing, loss of money, loss of virginity, delusions of grandeur, table dancing, headache, dehydration, dry mouth, and a desire to sing Karaoke

and play all-night rounds of Strip Poker, Truth Or Dare, and Naked Twister. Warnings: The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may make you think you are whispering when you are not. The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may cause you to tell your friends over and over again that you love them. The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may cause you to think you can sing. The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may create the illusion that you are tougher, smarter, faster and better looking than most people. BOWLS BRIBIE ISLAND Susan Lamb MP, Federal Member for Longman, taken when she presented a replacement Australian National Flag to the Bongaree Bowls Club on Wednesday 25th January.

Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. Stewart and his wife Barbara go to the County Fair. And every year Stewart would say “Barbara, I’d like to ride in that helicopter”. Barbara always replied “I know Stewart, but that helicopter ride is seventy quid, and seventy quid is seventy quid!”. One year later Stewart and Barbara went to the fair, and Stewart said “Barbara, I am 75 years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter I might never get a chance”. To this this Barbara replied “ Stewart that helicopter ride is seventy quid and seventy quid is seventy quid”.The pilot overheard the couple and said “ Folks, I’ll make you an deal. I’ll take both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don’t say a word I won’t charge you a penny. But if you say one word it’s seventy quid” Stewart and Barbara agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kind of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his dare

But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots BACK onto his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, ‘Now, where are your mittens?’

Susan discussing the friendly club with bowls club Patron Andy Anderson and Chairman Barry France

He said, ‘I stuffed ‘em in the toes of my boots...’ She’ll be eligible for parole in fifteen years.

Do you have feelings of inadequacy? Do you suffer from shyness? Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive? Do you feel stressed at times? If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon is the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident about yourself and your actions. It can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world

fishing bribie

Alot of gummy sharks in the passage at the moment.

Nice bay eustary cod Hope everybody had an awsome and safe Christmas and new years break. With the fair amount of reasonable weather days, I went quite a few days camping over at moreton and trips up the passage crabbing and just enjoying the scenery. With big tides over 2.6m for quite a few days meant plenty of run. The moon is one of the major contributers to the size of the tides. The moons gravity combines with the earths rotation in orbit to create different stages in the lunar cycle... this is turn means the size of the tides always change throughout the months. Its amazing to think what affect the moon has on the crabs fish wildlife plants and of course,us! The bigger tides and stronger runs always occur around the new or full moon. Planning the right tide to cross the bay, so the wind and tide is flowing together.High tide is generally a lot better on Moreton Bay, due to the increased water over the banks. Run in tide in the bay flows in hard from the north, and run out tides flow hard from the south to north. So a ten to fifteen knot wind, with the current on a sandbar can stand up and become a washing machine of waves and white water. I watched it one day heading back from a camping trip. It was predicted to be 15knt to 25knt se, with 3pm hightide and tide change flowing back with the direction of wind at 3.30ish to 4 we decided to wait for the wind and tide to be running together. From 10am till 3pm the bay in the 25knts plus was real messy. After the tide change, it dropped the cross chop dramatically and was actually not a bad run home in 25knts, as i used the wind and tides to predict the best time to cross the bay. Not obviously what weather you

want to be out in, also most wind ratings can be up to 40%stronger than the forecast. Wind gusts also pick up around the tide changes throughout the day. Knowing this vital information can change a trip from being not that great to one that’s quite a lot better. The fishing of late has been exceptional, with most of the usual spots and species firing up hard in the warmer water. Increased bait schools and prawn schools providing plenty of tucker for the many different species. Whiting, Cod, Flathead, Javelin and Jacks getting caught up the passage . Trevally and Queen fish also harassing the bait schools throughout. There has also been a big influx of Grass Sweetlip and Moses Perch in the passage at the moment. Its really becoming such an awsome fishery throughout the passage system with many weird and somewhat strange species being caught. Good mackeral venturing well up the passage over the last month, with many chopping up at the big numbers of Hardys through the passage. Sandcrabs have been taken through out the entire passage. Offshore fishing too of late has been awsome with a whole mixed bag of species getting taken. Its not uncommon to land 10 to 15 different species on one days fishing. The bay has been holding all its usaul predators as well with some quality fish coming in. The prawns too have been firing up of late and will only get better over the next month or two. Good numbers up most estuary systems. So get out there yourself over the next month or two and chase a few yourself! Dont destroy what you came to enjoy and tight lines.

letters to the editor

Dear Editor, Every edition of your paper has multiple letters by C Frost, always similar subject matter. He is always critical of Malcolm Turnbull, but he didn’t criticise him when he paid over $100.000 from his own pocket to finish the renovations to the Lodge. More importantly, every time I read one of these letters I can’t stop thinking of a song that was played on the radio about 50 years ago by Johnny Ashcroft who became famous for recording “Little boy lost”, “They’re a weird mob” and “ Holy Joe, the Salvo”. The song I refer to is “Billabong Bill the Whinger” because the lyrics go something like this, “Billabong Bill the Whinger, he write the whingers book, whenever things are going extra good he tell you things are rough and things are tough and they’re going to get worse”. So, come on Charles go outside and look down at the grass and be happy that you are still on the green side. Here is a footnote, Johnny Ashcroft is living on the Gold Coast, he was born 1st February 1927. Regards. Eric Adams Bongaree Dear Editor, What has happened to the delightful ‘Stripey Tree Coats’ that decorated the Bongaree area. I thought they were innovative, colourful and fun and don’t we all need a little more colour and fun in our lives? Thank you to the persons who originally put some fun into our lives and I am sad that they have been removed. Sincerely. Wendy Baldwin, Bongaree Dear Editor, It has been stated on TV that Woolworths are to remove a large amounts of goods from their shelves – no explanation why? I would like to hear from a Woolworth’s Media person just what goods they are unilaterally going to remove? I hope it includes many of their own name branded items that have caused many popular brands to be removed? Woolworths has to remember Shopping is about choices and if they remove products I like I will shop elsewhere to get those items. I am already fed up with their differences in pricings on products on a Monday being increased by the end of the week or Week ends. ALDI keep their prices the same on any day of the week, when will all other retail businesses look and learn! I would like to know what goods are going to be removed and whether they are Woolworths own Brands or just other brands? Disgruntled by this dictatorial form of bureaucracy. C Frost Dear Editor, Relating to issue 30 page 30 ‘Those Sneaky Trees’ Europeans know the importance of closed doors and windows, but your journalist Neil, recommends keeping them open in hot weather, which is not good advice for oldies who have trouble regulating their body heat. When Bribie experiences unbearable hot

humid weather, it is because hot winds are blowing from the north. At such times, the way to keep a house cool is to close up at 8am and don’t open up until after dark. Owners of air-conditioning know this. Even if there is no hot wind, it is a good way to keep the house cool until the sea breeze arrives in the early afternoon. Using fans to keep the air moving is better than air-conditioning at most temperatures. It might help to use a dehumidifier - usually available in winter because the southern states rule the availability. And if you want another way to assist in staying cool - plant trees on your boundaries, transpiration requires energy (heat) which it removes from the air. In spite of Neil’s dislike of trees, they have managed to regulate our climate for millions of years before man came along. H.Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Editor, Justification of large Price Hikes. We have just been advised via the media that Electricity will be increased by 25% . Why is it that the media doesn’t ask the necessary questions? Why the large Hike in Prices? How do you Justify that figure when the inflation rate is far below that figure? How much of that figure is inflation costed or profit costed? What has \the PM and State Premiers said about this or have they nodded approval? How are low income families and Pensioners going to handle this? Increase pensions to deal with these sorts of increases? Make these large corporations become more efficient, cut the salaries of those who do not create efficiency? There is no justification to increase an essential service by that amount, without a inquiry as to why the the massive Hike? I ask the media to start investigating why, no merely print that the hike will happen. Bring back Grey Power and start Challenging Local MPs/Federal MPs that do nothing for everyday Australians. C Frost Dear Editor, In response to the article “ Ride Share Raises Concerns” in the issue of Jan/Feb 2017, I wish to point out a few facts that were either not mentioned in your article, or the facts reported were incorrect. There are a few rideshare services available, the most used being Uber. In order to qualify as an Uber driver, the applicant must apply for and pass a Driver Authorisation Licence. To make a point about how extreme the measures are with obtaining this Authority, the applicant must fulfil criteria via a full medical assessment, police check, driving record and court check, sometimes taking up to six months to be approved depending on how quickly the government organisations get through this process. On a side note, the Driver Authorisation Licence also gives a rideshare driver the ability to legally drive a taxi. Once a Driver Authorisation Licence has been approved and finalised, your car must be checked and registered by Uber at their central vehicle inspection station. The driver needs to carry a copy of the vehicle inspection report at all

times, of course, along with the Driver Authorisation Licence. These vehicle inspections are done at the beginning of a driver’s tenure, and the driver can be requested to bring their car in for another inspection at any time; failing to do so would log the driver out of the system and unable to provide a service. The comment “…the comparative ease of entry into the industry…” is thus illinformed. Also, many rideshare drivers have cameras in their cars, as a personal choice. In response to the comment that “rideshare drivers are not there to do the hard yards…they are normally only available in the early part of the night so if someone needs to go somewhere late at night...”, I would point out that the rideshare drivers currently available on Bribie Island are still working at 1.00am and even just last week as late as 2.30am taking clients when no taxis were available. Uber drivers are not rostered to work any particular shifts, but unfortunately, there will always be a time of the day or night when a driver, be it a rideshare service or a taxi, will be unavailable for the exact time you need them. Uber driver’s fares are not subject to tariffs like taxis, so the comment “…the fares will be absolutely enormous…” is not justifiable. The only time you may find a fare to be above normal is if there is a high demand in that area, but the client will receive a warning notifying them of any surge rate increase prior to requesting the service. This is a rare occasion for our local area. In response to the comment “Mr Goold feels that the public should think carefully about the ongoing consequences of giving their business to rideshare..”, I am appalled to think that an upstanding community member and local business owner would criticise or discredit others within the same community trying to earn a living and provide a very helpful service to the Bribie Island area and its surrounds. Many clients have used a rideshare service because their taxi has failed to show up with a booking, or there were just none available. The rideshare service, especially here on Bribie Island and its surrounds, will not replace the taxi service, it is merely another choice for people within our community. In closing, I hope that Bribie Island and and its surrounds embraces a choice for this type of service within their community. The more services we can provide our community, the better quality of life we all will have. Wife of a Local Uber Driver Lynn Smith, Bellara. Dear Editor, Bribie Island Library alterations obliterate essential Community Meeting Room – Big Mistake; Huge! Dear Mayor Sutherland The closure of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s fantastic Bribie Island Community Meeting Room facility was a big mistake – Huge! Bribie Island’s community is special. Together our community contributes several diverse, voluntary, not- for-profit services to support the broad needs and interests of our residents and Council – often at no cost. But Moreton Bay Regional Council, without explanation and without arranging a suitable alternative, recently closed the much loved and well used Bribie Island Library

Community Meeting Room which was at the centre of delivery of these services. One only had to peruse the extensive booking list of groups previously using and appreciating this wonderful and welcoming facility to understand how important and essential it was to our community. Health, Well-Being and Fitness; Education and Training; Environment and Heritage; Community awareness, information sessions and forums etc - all these services and groups have now been suddenly and unceremoniously “evicted”. Council claims to value such generous community contributions but their recent closure of this essential and locally unique Bribie Island Library community meeting room has been a real kick in the teeth for us all and leads us to ask the question: Is nothing of value safe? What were they thinking? If Council’s motto for the region: “Where Lifestyle Really Matters” is to be taken at all seriously then arrangements for an equivalent standard replacement local meeting room must be implemented immediately. Yours Sincerely. Ian Bell Dear Editor, Sincere thanks to the kind person/s who handed my bag, purse and contents to the Desk Staff at the Bribie Island R.S.L. Monday afternoon 30th. I asked if the person had left a contact number...they hadn’t, therefore, this is the only possible way I know how to say,”Thank You!” I’d withdrawn $$$’s; Credit cards; Saving Card etc etc..... to have my purse returned, intact, how the honesty of this special person/s has blessed me. From the bottom of my heart....I thank you! God bless you and yours, this day and all your tomorrows. Margie Clarke
