ART PRIZE
TALENT ON DISPLAY By Neil Wilson Photo Credit: Art Prize Photos by Kathrin Dierich Within both the local and distant art community, the Mathew Flinders Gallery at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre has become incredibly well known for it’s continuous schedule of outstanding exhibitions and, following the official opening which was attended by what was estimated to be more than two hundred art enthusiasts, the gallery’s premier exhibition for 2018 is now on display. The Mathew Flinders Art Prize, now in its twentieth year,
always attracts entries by some of the most talented artists from near and far and this year, the gallery walls are taken up with a record-breaking 277 works of art encompassing several mediums.
On the evening of July 27 and in wonderfully mild conditions for the time of year, those who attended the opening enjoyed drinks and an array of finger food on their arrival and then waited in anticipation to hear the names of the successful artists. Venue Manager Julie Thompson began the proceedings by welcoming all who were there and then paying tribute to the judges, the artists and the many volunteers at the centre who had helped to make the evening

Craig Rohse discussing his Three Wise Veterans with an admirer possible. Following a few words from judges Wyn Vogel and Karl De Waal, LNP Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson declared the 2018 Mathew Flinders Art Prize officially open and in doing so, she pointed out that we are fortunate to have such a vibrant art society and she acknowledged the fantastic job that is done by Julie in making art a feature of our community. At this point, the judges began announcing their decisions. First to be revealed were the names of the four artists whose work had been judged worthy of a commendation and these were Dylan Jones for his work “Seen Better Days,” Jan Singleton
for “John West Rejects,” Kym Barrett for “Down to Earth” and Jennifere Thompson for “Bird in Vines.” Next to be recognised were the two winners of the Highly Commended prizes, Dennis Forshaw for “Early Spring” and Graeme Spencer for his acrylic and mixed media work “Pink Formica and Vegemite.” As the time arrived for the announcement of the first and second prize winners. A hush fell over the crowd before judge Wyn Vogel told everyone that Jennifer Pullman’s impressive “Canefields Innisfail” had won the second place prize and Karl De Waal congratulated first place winner Craig Rohse on his rather poignant

As a regular visitor to the Art Centre and

The Mathew Flinders Art Prize exhibition is on display until August 17 and, after having the absolute pleasure of attending the opening and viewing the astounding entries, I can only recommend that anyone who appreciates art takes the time to pay a visit to the Bribie Island Community Art Centre on Sunderland Drive for a wander through the gallery. MAN'S BEST FRIEND
GUESS WHO’S GETTING A DOG
Ann Ward and Julie Rigg from the Wallum Action Group enjoying some time with little Dylan
loyal companion, a dog can be trained to work with sheep or cattle or to be a valuable asset in law enforcement and, as well as these roles, there are many ways that a dog can be of assistance to people with a medical condition. Following a rather long battle by Bribie Island mother Renee McCann to raise the funds which were necessary to provide a trained assistance dog for her young daughter Dylan, the target has now been met due to the wonderful generosity of the Wallum Action Group. Renee explained to me about her daughter’s medical condition and how little Dylan, who is not yet three years old, will be able to benefit from having a canine assistant.
By Neil Wilson Researchers have determined that dogs and humands have co-evolved for thousands of years and although the subject of when is hotly debated, all agree that the domestication of dogs occurred much earlier in time than was previously thought to be the case. Whilst an ancient dog-like skull that was discovered in the Siberian Mountains has fostered a theory that the first domestication of dogs occurred about 33,000 years ago after a split from grey wolves, genetic analysis suggests that dogs in China were domesticated in the vicinity of only 10,000 years agoand in fact some researchers believe that Chinese indigenous dogs might represent the missing link in the domestication of man’s best friend. As to why dogs and humans are able to co-exist together so well, there are many parallels between the behaviour of the two species and these include a territorial nature, the ability to emotionally bond and even to hunt cooperatively. Experiments have shown that dogs can be astute readers of human body language and have an enhanced ability to predict what their owners are going to do and it is for these reasons that our canine companions are able to take on various roles which can be of great benefit to humans. As well as a

‘Dylan was born with Fibular Hemimelia and PFFD (Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency) and she also has only partial Corpus Callosum. She has shorter than normal legs with one being about six centimetres shorter than the other and there is no ACL in one of her knees. She will soon begin to undergo extensive rounds of surgery which will result in full reconstruction of her legs and the aim will be to create one good leg,’ said Renee. ‘It is hoped that she will eventually be able to walk at home with the use of a crutch but for any distance she will still need a wheelchair. An assistance dog will be trained to alert someone if she is having any difficulties, either falling over at home or perhaps if she falls out of her wheelchair at school,’ she added.
Assistance dogs are specially trained for a variety of situations and this can be for autism assistance, seizure response, medical/diabetes alert or vision assistance and the dog which Dylan will receive will be trained for mobility assistance. There are a number of organisations which are involved in training these dogs but some of them do not prepare the dogs for working with young children and, with this in mind, Renee has chosen Sunshine Coast not-for-profit organisation Smart Pups for the task of training Dylan’s furry companion. ‘Smart Pups specialise in dogs for children and don’t train assistance dogs for adults,’ Renee told me. ‘They begin training the dogs while they are still a puppy and the process can take up to eighteen months and six weeks prior

to handing the dog over, Smart Pups will introduce Dylan to her dog for the integration process to begin. They will also provide some training to teachers at the school and talk to the other students about how to behave around an assistance dog,’ she said.
The payment (about $18,000) by the Wallum Action Group was made after Treasurer Ann Ward asked Renee to call in for a talk and upon hearing about the need for a dog, agreed to pay the remainder of the balance that was owed so that training could commence. Renee pointed out that there have been small amounts raised in the past by very kind people and businesses and she recalled that one little girl who was having a birthday asked people to donate to Dylan’s cause instead of buying her a birthday present. As a way of showing her gratitude to the team at the Wallum Action Group Community Nursery, Renee brought Dylan for a visit and also provided the volunteers with a sumptuous array of goodies for morning tea. The Wallum Action Group has provided assistance to many worthwhile causes within the community and does so by raising funds from their Community Nursery which is next door to the Orchid
Renee McCann and her daughter Dylan House on First Avenue and always has an incredibly large variety of plants for sale. The organisation is operated entirely by volunteers and anyone who would like to help out is always welcome to make contact by either paying a visit to the nursery which is open each week day from 8 am until 11 am or by calling 0407 699 953.

PETS WELCOME AT SEASONS BRIBIE ISLAND Looking for a pet-friendly aged care community where you and your furry friend can both feel at home? At Seasons Aged Care Bribie Island, pets are more than welcome and are a valuable and much-loved presence in our communities. Moving into an aged care home or facility is a big step that can bring with it a sense of loss. This sense of loss can be even more profound when you need to leave your much-loved pet behind. While Australian households have one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, this doesn’t carry through to our aged care services, according to a study by the Animal Welfare League of Australia (AWLA). The 2017 AWLA Pets in Aged Care Study revealed that while 63 per cent of Australian households are pet owners, only 18 per cent of residential aged care facilities allow pets to reside with their owners. Those ageing in their own home can’t always access the support to keep their pets either, with only 9 per cent of in-home services saying that they offer pet friendly services. The result is that many seniors are
forced to give away or surrender their beloved family pets when they make the move to aged care. According to AWLA figures, about 7 percent of surrenders are directly related to the necessity of aged care, but this figure is believed to higher when taking in other issues facing senior pet owners such as unsuitable pet accommodation and lack of financial means to take care of a pet. An estimated 9,600 surrenders to the RSPCA were elderly-related. According to Seasons Aged Care Chief Executive Officer Nick Loudon, elderly people moving into aged care can already feel a level of sadness due to leaving their family home and this sense of loss can be even more profound when they need to separate from their muchloved pets. “Part of the reason that we encourage pet ownership within Seasons communities is that when a resident is strongly bonded to their pet and the care of that pet is well-supported there are huge benefits for that resident which creates a ripple affect across to other residents and staff,” says Mr Loudon.
Benefits of pet friendly aged care services Aged services that support and encourage pet ownership may be in the minority, however the wide-ranging health benefits of pets for seniors is well documented. Pet ownership helps to decrease feelings of loneliness and isolation, while increasing social interaction, providing purpose and meaning and improving the quality of life of their owners.
Some further benefits of pet friendly aged care services include:
• Eases the transition to aged care • Reduces feelings of loneliness • Health benefits include reduced stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and increased aerobic activity. • Greater uptake of aged care services due to not having to surrender their much-loved pet • Reduces animal surrender rates to shelters
• Helps increase feelings of independence • Boosts morale and happiness for both staff and residents At Seasons Bribie Island, you live in your own private apartment with your pet by your side while all the care you need comes to you. LISSA WINSTON
A LOOK AT THE PAST
By Neil Wilson One of the inescapable facts of life is that more often than not, the most interesting items are discovered by accident and this was certainly the case when well-known photographer Lissa Winston and her father went searching for a lost bowl on Christmas Day in 2016. ‘Mum wanted us to find a bowl that she hadn’t seen for a while and so we started searching through various cupboards and boxes. During our search, I happened to notice some old tins and a little box with Kodak on it and I just had to have a closer look. In them were more than one hundred glass negatives and other photographic items that had belonged to my grandfather Frank Winston,’ said Lissa.
This Frank Winston image shows anearly attempt at a wall to prevent erosion ‘All except one of the glass negatives were in good condition, even though they were stored on top of each other and rubbing together. I recall that he always liked working with glass because it produced a much sharper image and when I look at what I have been able to develop from the negatives that I have found, I can see what he meant,’ she added.
Lissa explained that the Winston family had a long association with Bribie Island and had grown tobacco on land which was bordered by what is now Winston Drive in Bongaree. She said that that was grandfather Frank’s two brothers who,
after experiencing a downturn in the tobacco farming, had bought Bestmann and Hall’s shop in the 1930’s and when her grandfather produced postcards with some of his many photos, he used to sell them through the store. As well as being an avid photographer and taking hundreds of photos of the area, Frank Winston was also an adept movie maker and along with being a member and later on the president of the Queensland Amateur Cine Society, his talent with a movie camera won him a number of awards. Since her discovery, Lissa has been working hard to prepare her grandfather’s images and is now going
to offer both locals and visitors the chance to view them at an exhibition in the Bribie Island Seaside Museum from August 10th until November 4th. Whilst the exhibition will feature a great many of Frank Winston’s beautiful images of Bribie Island in the early 1900’s, his movie “Bay Trips” will be playing at various times in the museum cinema. Lissa told me that the movie has scenes of coming to Bribie via Redcliffe on both the Koopa and the Doomba as well showing a journey through the island and then on Pumicestone Passage. For anyone who has an interest in the way this island once was, this exhibition should be regarded as a “must Visit.”
Photos such as this one of the three jetties will be exhibited at the Seaside Museum

HOW DID THEY LOSE THAT?
Division One Councillor Brooke Savige with Steven Palmer (L) and club president Jeff Butler
A well-publicised statistic reveals that there are many people in Australia who are either overweight or even obese and whilst this is rather alarming, the good news is that there is a certain percentage of those people who are determined to remove themselves from that classification. Within our local community, sixty-five weight loss enthusiasts meet every Tuesday as members of the Bribie Island Healthy Slimmers Fellowship and to celebrate their successful efforts to lose a few kilograms, they recently attended a graduation lunch at the Bribie Island Golf Club in Woorim. Fellowship President Ellen Beechley told me that the graduation event was held as a way of recognising the efforts of all

who had lost weight and also for those who had reached their goal to graduate. ‘The statistics that were revealed at the graduation are a very good example of what can be achieved by an ongoing commitment toward reaching a goal,’ said Ellen. After the overall gains were subtracted from the overall losses, the nett losses were a rather amazing 111.1 kgs,’ she added. Ellen explained that the slimmer who loses the most weight is named Queen and the one with the nearest loss to her receives the title of Princess. ‘at the graduation, Cheryl Ronque was announced as Queen and Anne Hanlon received the Princess sash,’ said Ellen. The Bribie Island Healthy Slimmers Fellowship was founded by Gwen Clayton and as an indication of how popular the organisation has been, there are some who have been members since not long after it began in 1982. Ellen pointed out that whilst anyone can lose weight, not everyone can keep it off and this is where being a member of the Slimmers can Be an advantage. She said that weights are recorded at every meeting and everyone is there to support each other. ‘When someone joins the fellowship, the first step is for them to consult with their doctor to set a weight goal and provide an indemnity,’ Ellen told me. ‘Weight loss is all about
HEALTH
A royal pair - Queen Cheryl Ronque and Princess Anne Hanlon staying healthy and being healthy is more important than being slim,’ she remarked. As well as assisting members to reach their ideal weight, Healthy Slimmers is also a very friendly and sociable organisation and members have outings throughout the year and parties at Easter, Mothers Day, Melbourne Cup Day and at Christmas time. There are sister clubs throughout the Brisbane area and some of the members from those clubs were present at the recent Bribie Island graduation. Bribie Island Healthy Slimmers Fellowship meets every Tuesday in the Toc H Hall at 36 Banya Street, Bongaree from 7.30 am and new members are always welcome. resulted in her taking a position with Ray White Real Estate as a sales agent. I guess that her determination to succeed became known to many during her time there and that was the catalyst for an approach from the Remax group who told her that they needed to have an agency on the island and would like her to start the ball rolling. ‘We commenced with a small office at Woorim six years ago and, as the business grew, we began operating from our Bellara premises,’ Victoria explained. ‘The Woorim office is still operating as well,’ she added.
From the time that The Bribie Islander began the “Islander Extraordinaire” features over two years ago, the majority of those who have appeared in this very popular section have been either retired or not far from it. As a way of keeping everything on an even scale, the Islander Extraordinaire for August is well-known business owner and extraordinarily community spirited Victoria Nicholson.
Victoria moved from the New South Wales border towns of Albury Wodonga to Bribie with her mum and dad in 1991 and has been a member of our community from that time. She told me that she has been athletic from a very young age. ‘I became involved in equestrian sports when I was only six years old and that was mainly in show jumping and gymkhana. I was playing in A grade ladies netball at thirteen and I became a coach of senior ladies netball
I only own work clothes and pyjamas at a very young age,’ said Victoria. ‘I guess that I grew up in a competitive environment,’ she remarked.
After coming to our beautiful part of the world, Victoria worked for some time as a fitness instructor in local gymnasiums until what was a defining career change

When talking about her involvement as a sponsor of various causes and events, Victoria pointed out that she is especially passionate about being involved in helping with children’s education. ‘I believe in making sure that they all have an equal opportunity and I want to do what I can to prevent kids coming to school without shoes or with no food,’ she told me. ‘This is when cycles can change,’ she said.
As well as being obviously kept busy with her real estate agency, Victoria is also dedicated to her role as a wife and In many of the articles that I have mother, has four adult children and two written in previous issues, I have still at primary school. A very true observation points out that none of us knows exactly what’s in store for us and a life-changing event two years ago has reminded Victoria Nicholson of just how pertinent that saying is. ‘In the past, I suppose that I have always taken life for granted, as one does when they are young. During 2016, I started to become unwell and this was unusual for me as I’m normally healthy,’ Victoria explained. ‘After a visit to the doctor and some tests, I was diagnosed as having a tumor on one of my kidneys and all I could think about was the fact that I have a business with quite a number of employees and a family at home and here I am stuck in a hospital. Fortunately, after them removing that kidney, I am doing okay now and I admit that I was so thankful
Illnesses such as the one which Victoria experienced are always bound to alter certain parts of our lifestyle and for her, it meant not being able to pursue her passion for CrossFit exercise so now Victoria just makes the most of the outdoors, enjoys visiting family and the occasional chance to go cycling. During the weeks leading up to Christmas last year and after thinking about how to make the season more enjoyable for those who are struggling, Victoria came up with a plan to give out Christmas hampers. ‘I promoted the idea on Facebook and also visited the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre to ask them to let people know about what I was doing. ON THE WATER REGULAR FEATURE
WI T H J O H N E NNIS
By Neil Wilson In any club or organisation, there are often fluctuations in membership numbers for various reasons which can be ill health, relocation or just loss of interest and whilst some people only remain as a member for a short time, there are also those who have joined in the very beginning or shortly after and continue to be active within the club for many years. For the August “On the Water” article, we take a look at someone who certainly fits the latter description when it comes to his membership of the Bribie Island Sailing Club. Keen sailor John Ennis has been a member of the local sailing club since moving to our beautiful island from

Melbourne in 2004. He told me that although he did spend a fair amount of time in power boating during his time in Victoria, he has enjoyed sailing from when, as a teen, he and a mate had small sailing dinghies and just went sailing whenever the time allowed. ‘We basically taught ourselves to sail and just sailed them around on our own,’ said John. ‘We were never members of a sailing club because there was always such a long waiting list to join,’ he added.
John, who has now retired from his career as an engineer in the resources sector, explained that he sold his sailing craft before he relocated to Bribie Island, but he did bring a 3.8 metre wooden runabout with him. ‘My dad was building that boat when he passed away and so I finished it off. It was a wooden hull with a fibreglass coating,’ John told me. ‘I have sold it now as the fibreglass was starting to come off the hull. I took it down to the Classic Boat Regatta one year and it was sold in about ten minutes,’ he said. When he first joined the Bribie Island Sailing Club, John bought a 4.3 metre sailing catamaran which he has now replaced with “Eclipse” which is a sleek mono-hull yacht. He remarked that he usually only sails it when the club has races, as his wife is not a very keen sailor. Members such as John Ennis are the backbone of the club which is now in

Earlier this year the MBRC finally allocated a site beside the Bribie VMR so that the sailing club and their sister club, Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club have their own premises. This followed a long period of using the VMR enclosure to store equipment and vessels. The Bribie Island Sailing Club and The Bribie Mahalo Canoe Club are both divisions of the Bribie Island Boat Club and new members are always

TENNIS
ANYONE FOR A GAME? By Neil Wilson
Within our island community, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of sporting associations which in turn means that those who wish to can participate in the sport of their choice and one of these sports is the ever popular game of tennis. The Bribie Island Tennis Club courts in Cosmos Park are a popular venue for many locals and club Vice-President/ Tournament Director Greg Beh told me recently that the club now has 144 members. ‘The club was founded in 1989 and from rather humble beginnings has now grown to become a reasonably strong organisation,’ said Greg. ‘There are six courts and these are used every day of the week as well as by the juniors on Saturday. There is also coaching available each afternoon during the week,’ he explained.
Ladies Doubles winners Heather Van Peperzeel and Terry Keily
During July, the Bribie Tennis Club held it’s annual Club Championship tournament and in perfect weather, five divisions were keenly contested by fifty-two players. Greg pointed out that the numbers for the tournament were up compared to the previous year and this was very encouraging. He said that some of the players played in three divisions and this meant that they had to play up to eight sets in one day with each match being the best of three sets with the third set (if required) played as a first to seven points tie-breaker. The winners on the day were presented with a shield that will have their name engraved on it and further awards will be given out at the club’s Christmas party.
Bill Quigley and Peter Marshall showing off the Men's Doubles award
In the Men’s Singles division, Brendon Clifford took out the award after defeating Greg Ohlson and Robyn Musgrove played a very strong match against Rhiannon Linsen-Perez to win the Ladies Singles title. Brendon Clifton and Greg Beh were runners-up to Bill Quigley and Peter Marshall in the Men’s Doubles and Heather Van Peperzeel teamed with Terry Keily to win the Ladies Doubles match against Mirella Parsons and Lyn Thistleton. The Mixed Doubles Championship was decided when Terry Keily and Peter Gehrman defeated Lyn Thistleton and Bill Quigley. Anyone who would like information about the Bribie Island Tennis Club should log-on to the club’s website www.bribieislandtennisclub.com.au for all the necessary details. The club will hold it’s Annual General Meeting
Proud Mixed Doubles winners Terry Keily and Peter Gehrman at the clubhouse on August 16 and members are asked to consider joining the committee. The meeting will commence at 7 pm and refreshments will be available from 6.30 pm.

LIVING WITH A FOUR LEGGED TEENAGER - PART TWO By Yvonne Bishop In the last issue I wrote about the two main periods dogs go through:

Most important is to understand it is a normal stage and that the dog is not naughty. Dogs are not aware of human house rules and so they have to be taught. So how do we survive the teen years and turn them from a rollercoaster ride to a merry go round?

ET COME HOME Many dogs bark when their owner is not home, and we can only speculate why. One good explanation is that they miss their significant human and are calling them home. Your dog’s barking is rewarded every time,
eventually, because you do come home. Your dog does not understand that you were coming home anyway. Dogs chasing the postie is part of our urban legend; the reasons for this may be similar, using “doggie logic”. Consider the following sequence of events: postie threatens to impinge the pack boundary and messes with pack property (i.e. the letterbox), dog produces a territorial display (hackles up, barking), postie leaves, and dog’s behaviour is rewarded. That silly postie comes AGAIN the next day and gets driven off by your dog’s ferocious display AGAIN… Will postie never learn???

HEMP
HENRY HAD THE RIGHT IDEA By Neil Wilson
From when the first automobile was produced, vehicle designers have experimented with various methods that will not only improve economy but will also have less impact on the environment and whilst one Canadian company has recently designed what is claimed to be the world’s most eco-friendly car with a body that is manufactured completely from hemp, few people are aware of a previous attempt to produce a similarly made vehicle by none other than Model T inventor, Henry Ford.
History reveals that Mr Ford spent something like twelve years researching the viability of such a vehicle and had even included the possibility of incorporating an engine that ran on a hemp based fuel. However, due to the restrictions placed on the industry during World War II, his plans failed to come to fruition and the idea was shelved in 1941, never to re-appear

Obviously having access to a much greater degree of technology than Henry Ford could have ever dreamed of, Calgary based Motive Industries Inc have come up with a design that is seen partly as the result of the Canadian Government’s pro-active support of the industrial use of hemp and with that, the farming of the product. The four passenger vehicle, the “Kestrel, is powered by an electric motor which is manufactured by TM4 Electrodynamic Systems of Quebec and produces a top speed of ninety km per hour with a arrange of approximately one hundred kilometres before the need to re-charge. Interestingly, the body of the Kestrel passed it’s crash testing admirably and unlike steel, the panels are not only lighter but have been reported to bounce back into shape after impact. As hemp is relatively easy to grow, requiring nothing but the sun, the retail price is said to be very affordable.
Hemp is a substance which complies with every eco-standard that exists in the world today, in fact, it actually exceeds those standards by an appreciable margin. The oldest recorded instance of hemp farming was five thousand years ago in China and for thousands of years, ninety percent of all ship’s sails and rope are made from hemp which is regarded as a forever lasting resource. It has uses in over 50,000 applications including medicines, fuel and clothing and is regarded as a large threat to the profitability of large corporations that control the supply of energy, health products and many more.
From when Motive Industries first revealed the Kestrel to the motoring world and predicted that it would be readily available within two years, all Seems to have gone quiet and one is left wondering if this is just another case of a product which is a threat to our current financial and economic system being stifled by the large companies which stand to be affected by it’s existence. Whilst the systems which we have in place are used to justify the reasons why products such as the Kestrel should not be mass marketed, we must work towards implementing new methods and technologies that are more harmonious with the planet.

KINDERGARTEN
A WALK WITH UNCLE RON By Neil Wilson
There is no doubt that the opportunity to take a walk through the natural environment of either the beaches or bushland can be of benefit in a number of ways which include the opportunity to be physically active as well as to develop a close connection with nature and a recent walk along the tracks at the rear of the Art Centre by the Bribie Island Community Kindergarten community has been described as a worthwhile experience by all who took part.
Kindy Director Narelle Dawson explained to me that this was part of a regular program of walks which are always accompanied by Uncle Ron who shares his indigenous knowledge about the area, wildlife, plants and trees. ‘Part of our beliefs and goals for the kindy community are to be connected to places and to each other which fosters a sense of belonging for all,’ said Narelle. ‘I believe that there is no better way to achieve this than by these regular outings which bring about a calming effect and a sense of peace. Walking among nature grounds the body whilst
Uncle Ron takes the time to share his knowledge also creating a sense of safety, comfort and belonging which in turn provides the opportunity to develop a close connection with nature,’ she added. During their excursion along what is known as the Banksia Walk and the Palm Grove Walk, the children, their parents and kindy staff learned from Uncle Ron about the Bungwall Fern and its Indigenous use as a flour for cooking “Johnny Cakes” and Narelle pointed out that as well as providing the young children with a chance to learn about the environment, the family bush and beach walks are designed as a way of inspiring

Following their walk, all who took part enjoyed morning tea on the lawn at the rear of the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre before taking the opportunity to inspect the children’s artwork which is on display at the centre. ‘Having their work displayed alongside the work of accomplished artists fosters a sense of worth and achievement for our little ones,’ Narelle told me. ‘The partnership with the Arts Centre has provided us with a worthwhile opportunity,’ she said.

LIONS CLUB
SPECIAL AWARDS AT THE RIVALRY GOES ON CHANGEOVER By Neil Wilson
When people give freely of their time and in some instances, their money, to be of help within their community, it is important that they receive due recognition for their efforts and at the recent Lions Club of Sandstone Point changeover, recognition of outstanding service to others was given to some well deserving locals. Lion Eric Banham was presented with a J.D. Richardson award for outstanding
District Governor, Engelbert Krampl, Lion Eric Banham and the Club President, Len Dawber.
The often fierce rivalry between sports men and women of Australia and our neighbours across the ditch in New Zealand is well documented and has been for many decades. It seems that there are dew sports which are excluded from this ambition to be the best and, as was witnessed at the Bongaree Bowls Club recently, bowls is no exception.
service to the community and the Lions Club by District Governor Englebert Krampl and club President Len Dawber. Melissa and Brendan Smith were recognised for being the founders of the Bribie Island – Sandstone Point Little Athletics Club and they were given a Lions Community Service Award by District Governor Krampl.
It seems that from 2006 until 2008, bowlers from both countries had entered into eager competition for the Jim Carr Trophy and following the rediscovery of the trophy at the back of a cupboard in the clubhouse in 2014, the rivalry began once more in 2015. In the previous three years, the visitors

have won the trophy and despite a very determined attempt to wrestle the prize back for Australia, the final result after twenty one ends was announced as a draw. Apparently, the greens at Bongaree were filled to capacity and there were a few who missed out on a game. With the competition over all present enjoyed a BBQ lunch which was followed by the presentations.
Bowlers who managed to get a “toucher” during a specific time frame were suitably rewarded and the raffle provided a range of great prizes. Special thanks must go to Brenda Hutchinson, Judy Hargreaves and Pat Clancy for doing such a wonderful job of organising the event.

REGATTA
A WEEKEND ON THE RIVER By Neil Wilson
‘It was an amazing couple of days and everything was so well organised,’ was how Dragons Abreast Bribie Island secretary Joie Scheinpflug described the International Dragons Abreast Regatta which was held in Florence recently. Twenty-nine members of the Bribie Island club attended the event and from what Joie has told me, they all thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and the opportunity to participate.
The regatta was held on the waters of the Arno River with teams of breast cancer survivors from across the globe competing in timed races over a distance of five hundred metres and Joie explained to me that whilst the local team enjoyed being able to win one of the trials in their section, just being able to be involved and be there to support each other was the important issue. As a much-anticipated part of the Dragons Abreast calendar, the International Regatta was attended by about four

thousand and, over the two days of the event, the venue was a mass of pink with all the competitors and supporters decked out in the special shirts that were issued to all that were there. Each of the paddlers also received a medal of participation which had been crafted out of the local Murano glass.
Towards the close of the regatta, representatives from each team joined to paddle in a special “Sandy Smith” paddle which was in honour of one of the early driving forces in the movement and Joie remarked that Sandy’s husband, daughter and sister were all present as the boats made their way through the water. The finale on the weekend was when over fifteen boats rafted up mid-stream for the traditional “Flowers on the Water” ceremony. This is a tribute to all those who are not with them anymore and involves everyone throwing a single flower into the water. The Dragons Abreast movement was founded in Australia twenty years ago and the Bribie Island club has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. I have been told that there are plans to conduct “come and try” days in the near

AUSTRALASIAN GREBE TACHYBAPTUS NOVAEHOLLANDIAE
By Marj Webber Last week I spent a couple of hours in the serenity of the hide at Buckley’s Hole. There were lots of birds scattered around the far banks but only a few
species were feeding in close proximity of the hide. Two Australasian Grebes came closer and closer, diving all the while to find food beneath the water. One was in breeding plumage and the other was not and I was able to take a few shots of each one. Australasian Grebes are very common breeding residents on Bribie Island working in pairs or in small groups.
They live in freshwater lakes and wetlands and are almost always able to be seen at Buckley’s Hole and Bibimulya Wetlands. They are found throughout Australia where there are lakes, rivers and dams and also inhabit the Pacific Islands. and have introduced themselves to New Zealand. Australasian Grebes are the smallest of the three species of Grebes in Australia with males and females being of similar in appearance. Males are usually a little larger than the females being 23 – 26 cm with a wingspan of about 39 cm, weigh 100 – 230 g and a lifespan of 11 – 12 years. Their plumage is waterproof and tail feathers are often fluffed and spread out when swimming to attract the warmth of the sun. When in

breeding plumage the feathers become much darker with a rufous stripe down the side of the head and neck and a yellow patch appears behind the bill. Hoary-headed Grebes are of similar appearance. Buckley’s Hole has had only three recorded visits from Hoaryheaded Grebes which not normally found in our area.

Australasian Grebes will sometimes eat their own feathers and feed them to the chicks. This is thought to prevent injury from sharp fish bones that have been eaten. If the food supply is sufficient the grebes will usually stay at their normal feeding grounds and only move if the water dries up and food becomes scarce. I have often observed the small grebes following other waterbirds such as Grey Teal and Hardheads and diving together when searching for food. The grebes eat some of the prey that has been disturbed by their host.
September to April is their most likely breeding season. They build a platform of aquatic vegetation on the water which is normally anchored to something under the water. Sometimes two females lay the 4 – 7 bluish eggs in the finished nest. After a time these eggs are stained a dark brown by the vegetation in the nest. Eggs are incubated by Chick riding on parent's back
Grebe on nest both male and female for 23 days and both parents care for the young when hatched. Chicks can swim as soon as they are hatched but often hitch a ride on their parents’ backs. Parents feed their chicks for about 10 weeks and when they start breeding again they are driven away. Up to three broods are produced in a season.
When in danger grebes usually dive under the water to escape their prey. Other times they will hide amongst the vegetation with only the head protruding. Conservation status is widespread and common. Artificial waterways created in parks and farmlands have been of benefit to their survival. There are no major predators threatening the species.

featured song and dance, a new artist and a new band. Once again, volunteers from Project Pink helped to make sure that it was a day to remember. Project Pink has been fundraising all through July to support breast cancer awareness and over the past few weeks, has managed to raise much-needed funds for this worthy cause. Thanks to Caz, Tracey, Chez and Jo for your wonderful and tireless help during the month. The show began with the Wham Bam Thank You Band with some lively tunes to set the mood for a fun afternoon. The first guest artists came in the form of the Step Up dance troupe, a local dance studio, who performed 2 sets of very colourful dance numbers. It was very enjoyable and showed the remarkable energy and talent of these young performers. It's very refreshing to see new artists at each of the shows, and this time, it came in the form of Tony Hirst
who quickly made himself popular with the Blueys audience and went on to receive one of the Performer of the Day prizes. The other prize was awarded to Frolly, a duo consisting of Frank Sover and Amanda Jones, making a long-awaited comeback to the Locals stage. A new band, Black Adder, formed only a couple of months ago, graced the beer garden with some really great music and showed the crowd how much fun that playing music can be. The show ended with host Dan Burns seeing out the day with a few friends for a long bracket of blues and rock 'n roll. Dan is proving to be a great master of ceremonies and is attacking his hosting role with relish. Thank you to all the artists, the audience and especially Malcolm Smith who lent us the PA system for the day. The next Locals Only Show begins at 1 pm on Sunday 26th August.

MAJOR EVENTS IN BRIBIE HISTORY By Barry Clark Bribie Island Historical Society People often ask me what to read to get an overview of the rich History of Bribie Island. There is no doubt that this small Island has a fascinating past, and has experienced many events that are significant in the history of both Queensland and Australia. A basic understanding of what has happened here over the years will enhance enjoyment for both residents and visitors.
The following quote from noted historian and author Stan Tutt, a man who had experienced a lot life and history, puts it all in perspective. “Pumicestone Passage and Bribie Island contains more History, written and unwritten, than any other place in Queensland.”
For this month’s History Page I thought it would be helpful if I provide readers with a chronological list of some of the major events that have happened on Bribie over the past 248 years since James Cook first sailed past this coastline back in 1770. What he saw through his telescope were the distinctive distant shape of what he named “The Glasshouses”, being reminiscent of Glass making factories back home.
He did not come near Bribie Island, it was Matthew Flinders who first set foot on the island with his aboriginal companion Bongaree, 29 years later in 1799.
Long before white man came to this land there had been thousands of years of occupation by the indigenous people. Within 100 years the last of the local aboriginal people were gone. The early white settlers saw the birth of an amazing tourist industry on Bribie from 1912, and although thousands came for weekends and holidays, there were still less than 200 residents in the 1930’s. Here is a list of some key events and old photos that have shaped this island community over the years..

BE Healthy BE Happy BE Free Salute to the sun for self-worth and sustenance Did you know that a primary yoga sequence called salute to the sun has many therapeutic benefits both physically and emotionally? This sequence invites us to reflect on the life giving solar energy, cultivating gratitude for life itself and through repetition of the flow, our daily dramas begin to dissolve into relative insignificance. The combination of poses also provides a full body workout for strength, stability and flexibility, whilst gently purifying the internal organs. It is a wonderful remedy for winter sluggishness, low motivation and mild congestion in the digestive system. Low self-worth and selfdoubt is a primary source of
unhappiness, unfulfilled dreams and low energy. Sun salutations encourage us to bow down to the life force within us, to recognise and appreciate our own unique expression of the divine. A daily practice of even a few sun salutations goes a long way to lifting spirits and maintaining a healthy body.
SALUTE TO THE SUN SEQUENCE
WHAT’S NEW? As the days begin to get longer I am adding a NEW YOGA CLASS to our timetable: MONDAYS 6.30 – 8AM From Mon 6th Aug @ Bribie Arts Centre Boardroom This is a fantastic way to start your week with the rising sun and fueled with positive intention. Along with the asana practice this class will have a 30 minute meditation component with some chanting to uplift, centre and inspire your week ahead. www.beksthompson.com www.facebook.com/ beks.thompson www.facebook.com/ zenphysiyoga
Before retirement, there are other ways to access your super including starting a transition to retirement pension or specific circumstances such as severe financial hardship, compassionate grounds, permanent incapacity or a terminal medical condition. These will be discussed in later articles.
If you withdraw part or all of your super benefits on or after the age of 60, you will pay no tax on the withdrawal except if you are a member of certain types of public sector super funds. Withdrawing before age 60 will incur a tax the rate of which will be dependent on several factors. See the ATO website for details. You can withdraw your super as a lump sum or pension or combination of both. To start a pension you will need to transfer all or part of your super balance into a retirement income account within the super fund. Prior to starting a pension, your money will be held in what is known as an accumulation account. Earnings on the accumulation account are taxed at 15% whereas earnings on the retirement income account are tax-free provided the balance in the account is below $1.6 million. This taxfree income is one of the significant benefits of maximising the money that you accumulate in your fund during your working life. Once you start a pension you must draw a minimum amount from your
pension account each year. There is no maximum amount other than the balance of your super account so you may withdraw the balance of your account. The minimum draw for a pension starts at 4% pa of your fund balance if you are under 65 and rises in steps to 14% pa if you make it to 95. The minimum draw requirement means that you must have sufficient liquidity in your fund to make the annual payments. This may be a problem for the likes of a self-managed fund that is heavily invested in property where the income from which is insufficient to meet the minimum draw requirement. Some property may have to be sold to enable the minimum annual pension payments to be made. Super needs to be considered as part of estate planning. Super death benefits are tax-free when paid to someone who was financially dependent on a deceased fund member but taxed when paid to a non-dependant. Your death benefit will be the sum of the balance of your super account plus any benefits payable under an insurance policy. If you die your super fund trustee normally pays your death benefit to one or more dependants of your estate. If you want to be sure that the benefit be paid in accordance with your wishes you need to make a binding nomination. A binding nomination needs to be renewed every 3 years unless you put a nonlapsing binding nomination in place.
In this article, I have covered some of the basics of accessing your super in retirement. Super is a complex and ever-changing topic and different funds have different rules. Do your own research and always check with your super fund before making any decisions. Comprehensive information is available at ato.gov.au, moneysmart.gov.au, and most major super fund’s websites.

Over recent months we have covered the winemaking skills with table wines and sparkling wines but there are two segments which were the heroes of the industry only forty years ago but now hardly get any coverage at all, and that is fortified wines and brandy which to some degree are linked. When I joined Kaiser Stuhl in 1980 the public drank sweet white wines, casks and flagons, cheap sparkling wines, sherries and port but only 3% of wine drinkers drank the excellent red wines we produced. In those days our wines carried names such as Minchinbury Champagne, Houghton White Burgundy, Moyston Claret and hock was still around and many brandies also had the word hospital on the label, also popular were cold and white duck and porphyry pearl, how marketing and labels have changed! It is sad that fortified wines and brandy have lost popularity as Australia makes these products that match any country in the world, it is unfortunate that our fortified wines have lost the words port and sherry as this could have helped the consumer leave the products on the shelves, let's try and set the records straight. Australia has been producing grape spirit for over 150 years from Sultana grapes which there was an abundance of, initially this was for the production of fortified wine, but in the 1920’s the production of true brandy began in South Australia where a coppersmith produced a pot still and the product took off. Fortunately the word Cognac was never used and here in Australia the brandy market is strictly regulated with the finished spirit having to spend a minimum of two years in barrels before being bottled and nowadays very few wineries even make brandy, the largest seller and best quality is St. Agnes from Angove’s where their three star is the most popular in the country and they make a V.S.O.P five-year-old, an X.O. 15-year-old, an X.O. Imperial 20-year-old and a magnificent 40-yearold Grand Reserve which retails at over $500 per bottle, the X.O. products can be a match for most Cognacs so
WINE
THE BRIBIE
WINELANDER with Philip Arlidge, arlidge@bigpond.com.au if looking to buy one don’t, buy a St. Agnes instead, no other brandy maker in Australia can come close to producing a quality product such as this because they don’t have the museum stock that Angove’s have been storing away since the 1920’s, and some of the other labels on the shelves probably contain brandy made by Angove’s anyway. Brandy can be made from any fermented fruit and are easy to manufacture and doesn’t need to use premium grapes. White wine is boiled in a small copper still for fine brandies or continuous still for commercial brandy at a temperature between the boiling point of ethyl alcohol and the boiling point of water, the resulting vapours are collected and cooled. The cooled vapours contain most of the alcohol from the original liquid along with some of its water, and then the process is then repeated (double distilled) which increases the alcohol level to around 72% which is then reduced to 40% using distilled water and it takes around 34 litres of wine to produce 3.8 litres of brandy. The first distillation takes around eight hours, 13,249 litres of wine have been converted to 4,542 litres of a concentrated alcoholic liquid at around 26-32% alcohol. After the second distillation the brandy is placed in oak casks and allowed to age which is where it develops its colour, the more commercial brands spend two years and as they age the quality increases and the product softens on the palate and absorbs the oak flavour of the barrel, and attracts a higher selling price. The brandy also loses around 1% of its alcohol per year for the first 50 years and is known as ‘on oak”.

A fortified wine is a delicious viscous wine-based treat that can be served before dinner as an aperitif with a bonedry fino sherry or an after dinner drink such as a fine port. The most common types of fortified wines are Port, Sherry, Madeira, Marsala, and Vermouth and are made from a variety of wine grapes then a neutral grape spirit or brandy is added to fortify the wine and the time the wine is allowed to ferment will determine whether the finished product will be sweet, medium or dry. Many fortified wines undergo aging in wooden casks with the cheaper the wine the less time it has spent aging in oak, but the more expensive wines can be a blend of different ages the wines have been kept in the barrels, sometimes even a small amount as old as fifty years or more can be blended into a port, tokay or muscat. Port, which originated in Portugal is the best known fortified wine and comes with names such as tawny, vintage, ruby and white port. Generally port is made using red wine and the two styles we are familiar with are tawny and vintage. Tawny is made by blending several vintages together from a system known as the solera aging system where the barrels of wine are stored on top of each other, the oldest at the bottom. The older the components determine the price the wine is sold for, Penfolds Club, for example, has an average age of five years whilst Grandfather contains material that has been aged for fifty years. Tawny Port is made from aged casks whereas vintage port is bottled using young fortified material and ages in the bottle in a similar fashion to a fine
red wine, when you open a vintage port it is normally necessary to decant it as a lot of sediment will have formed in the bottle which is quite unpleasant, it should also be consumed within days as it will deteriorate very quickly. Sherry originated in Southwest Spain and is made in a similar fashion to port but uses white grape varieties and ranges in styles from Fino (dry and light bodied ) Oloroso (dry but richer) to medium and sweet. Although in Australia we cannot use the terms such as Port or Sherry many fine examples of fortified wine styles still exist on the liquor store shelves such as Galway Pipe 12 Y.O Tawny, Penfolds Club Tawny, Penfolds Club Reserve Classic Tawny, Seppeltsfield Para 21 Y.O. Tawny, McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate 10 Y.O. Grand Tawny and Stanton and Killeen Vintage Fortified. With Sherry look for names such as Apera, Fino and Flor on the labels, brands such as Seppeltsfield DP 116 aged Flor or All Saints “The Keep” Golden Cream Apera. Although the names are now confusing it is well worth the effort to seek these wines out as there are bargains to be had with Australian fortified wines just look at the medals on the labels. I have noticed that Liquorland at Sylvan Beach has had some excellent deals on Rosemount Chardonnay and Rapaura New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. If you can't get away from the island, well worth a visit. Cheers, Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au I have changed this slightly from Forbes Magazine 1996. “She can have the holiday cottage and the Rolls, just give me the Grange” Joan Collins “Age is just a number, it is totally irrelevant, unless of course you just happen to be a bottle of wine”

Allan and Louise are thrilled to be opening Bribie’s newest restaurant, Serenity at the Waterways. The couple returned to Australia after almost 20 years in the UK, settled on Bribie, and took over Serenity Café in December. Since then they have been overwhelmed with the local support but were also looking for other opportunities on the island. When the restaurant at the Waterways came up, it was too good an opportunity to miss. Lou and Al ran a very successful restaurant in Poole, Dorset taking it to numbertwo on TripAdvisor out of almost 400 restaurants in the area - well ahead of Rick Stein at 11! Lou said ‘we were pretty pleased with that!”. Lou and Al will apply the same principles of casual dining; good service and good food, prepared from fresh local ingredients. We are very excited to announce we have employed a local Chef, Anne Caine to take charge of the kitchen.

BUSY START TO JULY
Red Sunday Crew had a very busy start to July, commencing with a training exercise in Pumicestone Passage with Bribie One and Bribie Two and their respective crews. This was interrupted at 1244pm with a call for assistance, Bribie One was dispatched to a becalmed 12m sailing yacht at the Wild Banks Artificial Reef Channel requiring a tow back to anchorage just South of the Bribie Bridge, Bribie One refuelled and returned to base at 1630pm.
Bribie Two continued training until dispatched at 1348pm to a drifting 10.6m sailing yacht near Bongaree boat ramp. Bribie Two established it was unattended, the owner was advised and was picked up at our base ramp, as the yachts motor was U/S requiring a tow to Scarborough Marina. Meanwhile, another call for assistance was received from a 6m centre console boat which had run out of fuel 2 km East of Skirmish Point, so Bribie Two anchored the sailing vessel near Red Beach and proceeded to the out of fuel vessel, and towed it back to Spinnaker Sound Marina, refuelled, then returned to the sailing vessel, completed the tow to Scarborough Marina and returned to base at 1758pm.
At 1758pm a MAYDAY call was heard, but there was no reply, Water Police advised that the vessel with 5POB, had hit a sand bank and was taking on water near Comboyuro Point (Moreton Island), but was in shallow depth, and there was no imminent danger to life. Water Police later received information that the persons were on the beach and the helicopter was stood down. At 1840pm Bribie One headed for Comboyuro Point and arrived with the stricken vessel on the beach with police and ambulance attending. Queensland Police transported the 4 Adult males and 1 child to the Tangalooma Jetty via 4WD Police Vehicle from where VMR Bribie One transported them to the Water Police Base at Whyte Island, Port of Brisbane. After a well-earned coffee Bribie One and Crew headed home arriving back at 2300pm.

CELEBRITY
HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
with Helly Kemp
THE NIGHT SAMMY DAVIS JNR LAUGHED AND CRIED It’s a September London night in 1969 I will never forget. But what I am not expecting is that I would write about it nearly 50 years later. Dating one of Sammy Davis Jnr’s Managers at the time and so being “one of the family” as Sammy describes it, I am privy to attend many of his private parties and functions. Having only recently relocated from Sydney to London, my first ever attempt at a celebrity profile interview moves me to tears, never imagining it could make cover story in the 1969 December ‘SHE MAGAZINE. ’ And yes, you guessed it, it’s on Sammy. But back to September. In tonight’s performance Sammy is introduced to the audience – not that the red-hot box office attraction needs an introduction – by his close friends, Richard Burton, Roger Moore and Richard Harris.
It’s the opening night and 10 years since ‘The Entertainer of the Year’ performed at London’s top Theatre Restaurant, creating such a magnetic response from the public, that the atmosphere is highly charged electricity. The audience go wild with applause, cheering, clanking their cutlery on the tables, stamping their feet and whistling endlessly, demanding more and more and more encores. Pow! The man also selected in America as ‘The Personality Of The Year’ and’ The Man Of The Year’ sings, dances, gives devilishly good impersonations, leaps around the stage like a yo-yo, joking, buffooning, teasing and pushing forward his chin farther and farther with each new burst of unpretentious laughter, till his lower teeth extend a good inch in front of his upper ones. Simply: Sammy is a ball of fire. And the 43-year-old New York born phenomenon not only gives the people everything they want, but loves every minute of it, performing an unprecedented two and a half hours straight, instead of the advertised scheduled 50 minutes. It is difficult to judge who is more elated, the public or Sammy himself, or as he put it earlier, “If this don’t turn you on, man, you ain’t got no switches!”

After the performance, the fun continues with the lithe comedian’s private party of some 30 people upstairs. This time, for the rest of the evening, Sammy’s teasing is directed straight at me, actually some relief after the shock of my upstairs entrance. Wanting to look smart for this special evening, I buy a fabulous designer evening slack suit just before the event. Made of white brocade with authentic silver thread embroidery throughout, it is the most stunning and expensive outfit I have ever bought. A two inch wide open slit from neck to navel, but demurely covered with crisscrossed rows of spaced out pearls, makes this suit very sexy without being provocative. So, like a proud peacock spreading his feathers I enter the party room and there she is – why oh why out of hundreds of people at the show, was she invited to this small party – an older woman, wearing my identical white brocade suit! Immediately the elated Sammy leaps towards me, twirling me around, whispering in my ear, “I know someone who is not going to wear an outfit again!” Yet as distraught as I am, I can see the funny side of it. But I never have a photograph taken in that suit. And then it happens. A show business writer from a daily London paper starts harassing Sammy, bombarding him with a barrage of accusations, claiming Sammy only gave such a long performance tonight because of religious, political and other ulterior business motives.
I have never seen Sammy like this before. Within minutes he is reduced from the triumphant success of the evening to a deflated balloon, head and shoulders drooping, his hands between his knees. And I am moved by the tears swelling in Sammy’s eyes. Sammy stays silent. But the man keeps on and on, until finally Sammy has had enough. He sits up straight and blasts out. “I’ll tell you unabashed. It was therapeutic. I was hungry for their approval and their fantastic applause. I’ve been making movies. It’s a long time since I‘ve worked with a live audience. I’m a performer. I need the audience. This was my party tonight. It was just for me. I didn’t do it for money or any of the other silly reasons you gave.” Sammy receives more money for one night in Las Vegas than he does here in London for 10 days. “Yes, I know,” he confirms, “I’m supposed to hate talking to my fans. I’m supposed to hate giving autographs. It’s supposed to be so boring. Well man, let me tell you, I love it, all and every bit of it.” The man leaves and Sammy soon returns to his joyous self, circling around me, whispering amusing suggestions of what to do with my fated white brocade suit.

BUSY FINGERS
By Sandra
F
irstly, the committee, staff and volunteers would like to sincerely thank the Volunteer Marine Rescue and their band of hard-working volunteers for the Christmas in July Party they gave us a few weeks ago. The dinner was beautiful and the entertainment was great and as usual, we were lucky enough to have a visit from our beloved Santa, who seems to spend a lot of his spare time at the VMR.
Over the years Busy Fingers has supported the VMR with Fuel and other items to help them raise the much need funds required for them to continue to keep us safe on the water. They have always supported us in times of need, including a band of merry VMR men arriving to move sheds and shop fittings when we were having the extension built and we thank them sincerely for all their hard work.
So please support the VMR whenever possible as they are a dedicated group working together with other groups such as SES, Police, Fire and Ambulance
to keep us safe while we enjoy life on the island. Once again thank you very much for our Christmas in July.
SOMETHING NEW AT BUSY’S
We are currently trialling a new pricing system as we have consistent problems with our price tagging guns and so often tags are being removed and the cashier has to reprice items going through the register which is quite time-consuming. There will be no tags on standard Ladies, Men’s, and Children’s clothes, instead, at the end of each of the clothing racks there will be a list of prices such as all men’s and ladies Jeans and Pants and Skirts are $4, all underwear $1, Bras $3, Blouses, tops, singlets $3, dresses $5, Men’s suits $10. Most of the children’s clothes $2 except dresses are $3 and PJ’s $4. So just look at the end of the racks when making your selection.
BRIBIE ISLAND JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE
SPONSORS NEEDED Bribie Island Junior Rugby League (Warrigals), was established in 1982. We are a non-profit organisation affiliated with the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League. In 2017, we had 4 Teams make it to the Grand Finals. One Team went on to win their Grand Final, the other 3 were gallant in defeat. In 2018, we have over 250 players registered at our Club, ranging in age from 6 to 15. We attempt to keep our fees at an affordable price for families, but costs continue to increase. Due to the number of Teams at our Club, we train 4 nights a week under lights, and games are played most Friday nights, again under lights. So, electricity is one of the many costs the Club incurs. We can tailor make a Sponsorship Package to suit your Budget and Business requirements. At Warrigals, we want to ensure that every Sponsor gets value for their Sponsorship Dollar. To discuss what we can do for you, contact... Alan (Vice President) on 0487368275 or Brooke (President) on 0414582779. KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE CLUB NEWS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE Search for... CHARITY
DESIGNER LABELS
DONATIONS GIVEN IN JULY
These items will still be priced and tagged individually, PLEASE do not remove the tags as the cashier does know the designer labels, if she finds one without a tag, it may end up being priced higher than it originally was. So PLEASE do the right thing and pay the correct amount, remember we are a charity and all funds are used for the benefit of the island residents. We have only been using this system for a few weeks and already some customers have done the incorrect thing. We pride ourselves in being very reasonably priced, some interstate and travelling Queensland visitors have often commented on the fact that we are cheaper than many other shops they have visited.
C&K Kindergarten Banksia Beach asked for the purchase and installation of a garden package including a veggie patch.
We have always been a shop of many bargains and we hope to continue to be priced within the range of everyone, so please pay the correct amount for all your purchases and help us to help the island.
FRIDAY 10TH AUGUST IS PYJAMA DAY AT BUSY FINGERS
Please keep in mind our PJ Day for Asthma Queensland – Our staff and volunteers have registered for the fundraiser and they are going to come to work in their PJ’s and we hope our customers will help them raise muchneeded funds for asthma research. There is a collection tin on the counter and there will also be a $2 sausage sizzle available so please come and join in the fun. If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance please let us know. We try to assist all not for profit associations and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@ bigpond.com if you wish to have a presentation or if you wish to apply for a grant of assistance.
Bribie District Little Athletes have been using equipment borrowed from the school and were in need of their own High Jump stands and also the large Flop Mat, these will now arrive shortly. Sergeant Samantha of the BI Police station asked for help in securing information bags for Road Safety Week this month. There will be a stand in the Woolworths shopping complex, the information is for pedestrian safety, a basic review of road rules and mobility scooter safety and any issues some of us mature aged drivers may have.
We also continued to support the VMR with fuel and the BI-Moreton Hospice for the Palliative Care unit at the Bribie Island Retirement village.
We thank all our donators and also our customers for their generosity, without you, we would not be able to grant the many wishes that we receive; we also thank our staff and many volunteers for all their hard work throughout the year too.
SHOP GATES We have been
very lucky in securing the help of our volunteer Vikki, who lives very close to Busy Fingers and she has volunteered to open the gates on Sunday mornings from 9 am, the gates will be open for a few hours each Sunday. So if you are unable to drop off goods on Saturday morning or through the week, Vikki will be able to help you on Sunday morning. If our gate closing has caused you some inconvenience we do apologize but the theft of donations and the dumping of rubbish became too big a problem. We still have our free pick up service; just call 3408 1014 between 8 am and 3 pm to arrange a house call. As always we wish to thank our dear friend Richard, and his merry group at the Bribie Islander for allowing us to let you know what is happening in Cotterill Ave. Hope to see you in the shop soon. LOVE YOUR PET
ADORING OUR ANIMALS By Nikita Chee
G’day to you beautiful Island folk! First and foremost, how cool is Neil the Seal rocking up on our shores and posing for all our photos? I’m so sad, I am yet to capture the handsome sea creature myself. I have tried to find him but gave up pretty quickly and relinquished to enjoying/ being jealous of it would make me very happy. Apart from that, I’m absolutely loving the Winter sun and its settings each evening. It is a little cool to be out 24/7 but I try to get out and about as much as I can to breathe in the fresh air. When the sky is this clear and the grass is actually green!! Aah, nothing a nice warm scarf and a little bit of movement of bod can’t fix. Speaking of animals bringing happiness…
So lately, because of recent personal pet situations, my mind has been on the role of animals in our day-to-day lives and how much we interact with them and sometimes, rely on them. Ever since The Beginning, animals have been an important part of creation and our existence. And we learnt early on in school that without each and every species, the cycle of life would be disrupted. How much more are they, though, then just another species? They are our friends. Just like that Michael Jackson song right? Good ol’ Ben.
There has never been a stage in my life so far where I haven’t had an animal to care for and love. When I was born we had a gorgeous and elegant black, Russian Blue. Her name was Sootie and she lived until she was 18. Cool huh? Then, out of the tender-heartedness of, well, my heart, I accepted a tiny black and white kitten with a little white dot on the very end of her tail. So cute! This was when I was in grade 4; I named her Lelo. She was going to be put down as her previous owners weren’t very good to her and I couldn’t handle that happening!! So I pleaded with my parents to keep her as kids do haha. Apparently Mum says we kept her because I, “Just wanted something to hold”. But I’m sure that was my sister that said that not me, and that was like, a decade earlier about another pet or baby or something! Anyway, I was so glad that we kept her because a year later she had two tiny little kittens: Tom and Eliza, respectively. Tom came out just like his mother, and Eliza came out just like her father – Maine Coon – which is like a tortoise shell kinda colour. I still remember the day of their birth. So many memories have been made with these cats and other animals along the way of my growing up like budgies and fish. Memories like mother and two kittens all up a Christmas tree at once. Or when they would all come out for a random midnight walk with the whole family. Or the time when Eliza followed me all the way to the beach and back. Love it!
Inset Top: Bella the Budgie Inset Bottom: Lelo – The Superior Mother
Eliza stretched out like ol’ Sphinxy. I guess she is royalty in my eyes! I guess the reason I’m saying all this is because they really bring us so much happiness. Especially when we are good fur-baby parents to them as they reflect trust and appreciation back to us. For some, animals are a much-needed companion/refuge for lonely/hurting people (what’s dog backwards??!) And for others, they are literally their eyes and senses. They protect, comfort, entertain and love us. I know my animals can’t read but shout out to Lelo, Eliza and my budgie Bella (who is still a little anti-social),

Especially if they are dogs with big hearts. Don’t work so hard that you’ve no time for them, make time!! They need you and get stressed without you. They are always there for us, let’s be there for them. And in saying that, how much more should we love and dote on our human companions.
xo Until next time, Nikita

TRAVEL
THE LONG WAY ROUND TO BRIBIE! with Sabine Van Graz
Episode12 - South Australia But this was not the only attraction, as the unbelievable local sinkhole was just as mind-boggling and stunning, all laid out as an amazing garden. I have never seen a sinkhole before, but it just felt so unreal with this sharp edge drop, the cooler air, the surrounding caves, dripping water, bees and bats not to mention those two huge palm trees which outgrew the hole!
say there was a bit of panic on my side, but all good when we finally found each other again.
Although the freezing summer weather still followed us, Victor Harbor did not disappoint, especially the bike ride to the village between the tall pine trees was a great calorie burner. The town harbour has a multi-function bridge, which leads to Granite Island. One can walk, ride or take a horse-drawn tram, which brings tourists to the island. Once there, you can walk a loop around the island, offering sunrise and sunset between stunning rock-formations.
“No Mummy that is not what I said. However, when you get older it’s normal that you get bigger and that is why you got stuck between the rocks!”
We wanted to stay longer, however, we had to get to Victor Harbor for Richard’s work.
H
i there, here is just a quick rehash in case you have missed the first episodes from ‘The Bribie Islander’. My short stories are all about our family, Richard my hubby, Ginger our daughter and myself, going on a 15 month trip of misadventure in a “big rig” around Australia, on a mission to find the place to call home. After travelling from Victoria via the Great Ocean Road to South Australia, we decided to pull up stumps at Mount Gambier for the night. The caravan park was right next to this amazing blue volcanic lake, which gets the colour from a unique chemical composition.
We made it onto Granite island twice, which was great as Ginger loves the rocks, where she decided to hide… and when I started to get a bit worried I decided to follow her and nearly got stuck between a couple of rocks!
Meanwhile, she was heading back to the spot I was originally at…no need to

I had to explain why it took me so long to follow her, upon which Ginger informed me, that I just was too big to fit between the rocks …time to stop the junk food was my reply… Ginger:” No Mummy that is not what I said – It’s just because you are old.” Ahhh! So I can’t fit between the rocks because I am old?
Well, that made me feel soooo much better, and ready to get off those rocks!
Next, we headed to Adelaide and stayed at Windsor Gardens, located once again right next to an adorable riverside bike path, which led right into the heart of the city. The timing was perfect, with the start of the WOMAD festival offering performances of popular bands, surrounded by trendy shopping and gourmet food stalls, followed by evening entertainment with more music, fire displays and light up art installations.
WOMAD art installation After the city experience, we were ready for a bit more quiet time by the sea and headed to Moonta Bay. Known for its copper mining history, and with its amazing sunsets over the water, it had a charm of its own.
Not the sort of swimming beach we are used to from Bribie Island, due to lots of seaweed and rocks all over the place, however, a sought after fishing spot and the perfect place to have a sunset picnic on the pier.

Ginger and Coco sharing an icy-pole Sinkhole at Mount Gambier But it's not a picnic for everyone living in Moonta Bay, as part of the old town had to deal with a natural disaster, leaving some beachfront houses as cliffhangers, with the water washing away the ground beneath them! Luckily, as it turned out, our windy caravan park site was booked, and we had to move an hour north to Port Broughton, which definitely had ‘the vibe’.
Our favourite hangout was the original old pub. The first time we went there, we could not believe our luck, with a delicious menu and the sun about to set over the pier, we had the choice of a whole empty verandah, while everyone else was crammed inside. Even the waiter asked: You really want to sit out here?
We thought why not, the best spot in town, why wouldn’t you?
Soon the caring waiter returned with a bottle of aeroguard…do I need to say more? This was a great opportunity to get close and personal with some fellow caravaners, squeezing onto their table inside the pub, followed by a dip in the heated pool, and if it were not for the huge amount of mosquitos we would probably still be there.
However it was time to move on and we decided to embark to Kangaroo Island, passing lots of windmill turbines on the way, which I think at most times enhances the rather barren landscape and was the inspiration for my logo painting to go with this episode.
I will leave you with this ‘windy’ thought and I hope you can join me in the next edition of ‘The Bribie Islander’, when we endanger the Kangaroo Island ferry by having to load on our rig in reverse!

GOLF
ALMOST A RECORD SPONSORED BY THE BRIBIE ISLANDER By Neil Wilson Under blue skies and in what can only be described as absolutely perfect weather for golf, a field of seventy keen golfers took part in the 2018 Ladies Foursomes Championship at the Bribie Island Golf Course recently and Ladies Captain Lyn Ball told me that this had almost set a record. ‘Unfortunately, four players withdrew due to ill health,’ said Lyn. ‘If they had not pulled out, it would have been a record field for the event,’ she said.
The Championship event, which was sponsored for the second time by Remax Advanced, was played over twenty seven holes and very keenly contested by all. This is a major day on the club’s golfing calendar and as such is an Honour Board event. At the end of play, Di Benghamy and Jess Knight were announced as 2018 Ladies Foursomes Champions with Leanne Gwyther and Cheryl Loimaranta as runners up. Nett winners were Lyn Ball and Kris Tomalin whilst Shirley
Milligan and Nadia Aylott were nett runners up.
‘Not only would I like to say thank you to Victoria for her continued support of women’s golf at the Bribie Island Golf Club, I also want to say a special thanks to Stephen Nicholson and Cate Thomas from Remax Advanced for taking the time out from their busy schedules to be here and present the prizes,’ Lyn remarked. She also pointed out that these events would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors and she urges club members to support all the businesses which support the club.

FISHING BRIBIE
By Vin Donovan
Well, what a beautiful month of weather we have just had - light winds and clear sunny skies throughout most of July. The current out off Moreton has been running quite slowly of late, and the last of the whales are moving north up to the Hervey Bay area. The visibility throughout the passage, the bay and Moreton has been spectacular. Over the next month, we should see similar
weather patterns continue. The fishing in the Bribie Island area over the last month has been great and will continue to fish well for the next couple of months. In the passage, the bream have really picked up with size and quantity. The bridge, the oyster leases, the Bongaree jetty and Tiger Rocks producing some nice catches. Fresh prawns, mullet fillets, chook gut and pilchard fillets working well. There has also been some nice tailor in the passage and they are fairly widespread at the moment. Tailor move quite quickly, so one day they may be there, the next day they're gone. Whole pillies unweighted is the best way to target the tailor. Keep an eye out for schools of tailor chopping at the big schools of hardy heads in the passage at the moment. Spinning metals, plastics, surface lures or hardbodys will usually get a few when they are chopping hard on the surface. The dusky flattys have been still on the chew. Fish the 1-2m deep flats or run off drains throughout the day well up the passage creeks. The flattys love sunbaking up on the flats during the winter months. Spin plastics and hardbodys slowly across the current lines or drop-offs.
There's been some nice big golden trevally getting taken around Bribie Island and catch a snapper or two. They tend to be pretty widespread but once you find the schools of better fish, generally there will be a few in the area. Anchoring up and starting a good berley trail will also help the snapper school move into the area. The winter whiting has also moved into the passage and bay, squid strips, peeled prawns or worms the go. Using light paternoster rigs and smaller hooks will help you catch a feed. Drift around until you start catching a few whiting, then keep drifting around that area until you find the bigger fish. The unbelievably great weather has made fishing the bay and offshore Moreton
Island a dream, with some days seeing wind gusts of no more than 8 knots and seas below .6 of a meter. Making it a great time to do those overnight trips out wide.Floatlining the 100m line around deep tempest producing plenty of quality snapper. There's also been some horse amberjack and kings patrolling the same area. The fish cages producing some nice snapper and jewies. Roberts, Brennans, Hutchies, Flinders, Smiths and the Caloundra Reefs holding some great mixed reefies also. So with all this great winter weather get out and grab the camping and fishing gear and get out and enjoy the great outdoors."And remember don't destroy what you come to enjoy "
There's also been some great squirey snapper coming from the passage with some fish over 4kg getting caught well upstream of the bridge. Drifting through the passage float lining whole pillies or diver whiting a good way to cover ground

SHELLFISH REEF TRIAL DOUBLES FISH POPULATIONS By Dr Ben Diggles Hello to all oyster gardeners, Thanks for your numerous questions and patience regarding the initial results from the shellfish reef restoration trials we are conducting in Pumicestone Passage. The University of the Sunshine Coast has now released their results from the first fish counting trial which forms part of the shellfish reef performance monitoring process. Using underwater cameras to count fish, results were compared against baseline fish counts that were done prior to the reefs going in. Overall, the number of fish in the area where the restoration activities occurred was double that seen prior to reef deployment. The number of fish species also doubled, showing the reefs had a positive effect on biodiversity as well as fish numbers.
After 6 months, around 20 different species of fish were observed inhabiting the trial reef area, including several species familiar
to recreational fishers, such as yellowfin bream, moses perch, ludrick, silver biddy, silver trevally, happy moments, butterbream, summer whiting and toadfish. A variety of other reef associated species were also observed, including beaked coralfish, Bengal sargentfish, blacksaddle goatfish, cardinalfish, Fanbelly leatherjacket, Gunthers wrasse Rainbow monocle bream bald spot monocle bream stripey, striped grunter Yellowfin tripodfish. Several reef designs are being trialled, with the results suggesting that on average most fish were aggregating around biodegradable potato starch reefs (BESE reefs), however similar abundances of fish were observed around some (but not all) of the patch reefs formed from recycled oyster shells topped with live shellfish from Bribie’s oyster gardening initiative. Results so far also suggest the highest fish species richness (greatest number of fish species) was also recorded over one of the patch reefs topped with live shellfish from oyster gardens. This is great news for oyster gardeners – nice to know all that effort that was put in to tend the live oysters has paid off!

PUMICESTONE PASSAGE
Surveys of invertebrates and settlement of baby oysters on the reefs are also planned to determine if the reefs can become selfsustaining over time and whether they are indeed boosting the supply of small fish, crabs and shrimp which act as food items for local fish stocks.
Thanks to University of the Sunshine Coast and Healthy Land and Water for supplying the survey results, and thanks to all oyster gardeners, OzFish Unlimited volunteers and local community supporters for their continued efforts in recycling even more oyster shells at Ningi Tip, which we hope will be placed into the water this coming summer to further boost fish numbers. Its a challenge the mind body and breath Leaning forward and back headstands and sweat But after the lesson and you let go of the stuff The mind and body are free and it makes your feel chuffed There will be a sense of calm after the Yoga Class The world is your oyster as you stroll out of class Written by Sharmayne Kurtz 28/5/18
SOLAR PANEL
LAUGH RIOT
Sitting by the window of her convent, Sister Barbara opened a letter from home one evening. Inside the letter was a $100 bill her parents had sent. Sister Barbara smiled at the gesture. As she read the letter by the window, she noticed a shabbily dressed stranger leaning against the lamp post below. Quickly, she wrote, “Don’t despair. Sister Barbara,” on a piece of paper, wrapped the $100 bill in it, got the man’s attention and tossed it out the window to him. The stranger picked it up, and with a puzzled expression and a tip of his hat, went off down the street. The next day, Sister Barbara was told that a man was at her door, insisting on seeing her. She went down, and found the stranger waiting. Without a word, he handed her a huge wad of $100 bills. “What’s this?” she asked. “That’s the $8,000 you have coming Sister,” he replied. “Don’t Despair paid 80-to-1.” An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy went to

the local church for confession. When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, the man said: “Father.. During World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighborhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic.” The priest replied: “That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that.” “There is more to tell, Father. She started to repay me with sexual favors. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays.” The priest said, “That was a long time ago and by doing what you did you placed the two of you in great danger, but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven.” “Thank you, Father. That’s a great load off my mind. I do have one more question.” “And what is that?” asked the priest. “Should I tell her the war is over?

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FOR AUGUST With OSCAR
CAINER
Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. How does the Man in the Moon cut his hair? Eclipse it! I'm starting with such a terrible joke because I'm looking forward to my trip to see comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, and the forthcoming partial Solar Eclipse in Leo. But those aren't the only highlights on August's impressive programme. Mars and Mercury turn direct, Jupiter creates its final trine with Neptune, and the Pisces Full Moon completes an Astrological 'kite' formation. I can't promise life will be a laugh a minute. But there'll be plenty worth smiling about! ARIES (March 21 - April 20)
Mars will finally end its retrograde period towards the end of August. Although this may feel like something in the distant future right now, it's a development that will have far-reaching implications in your life, and all for the good! I am telling you this to encourage you because I suspect that retrograde Mars is causing you more than enough stress. So, rather than allowing the current pressures to impact you negatively, you can focus on the future. The road may not be free of bumps and dips, but you'll like where it's leading you. In August, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21)
Teenage years are always a struggle - for teenagers and parents alike! That dizzying mix of hormones and the battle for independence is a tricky journey to navigate. It's hard not to take it personally when things hot up. As August begins with Mars making a tense alignment to Uranus, try to keep as calm as possible. Context is key. You're being asked to revise your situation, not abandon hope. Both Mercury and Mars will turn direct again later this month and when they do, you’ll be glad of the steadiness and strength you showed.
problems that could arise whenever we make a choice? Nothing's ever guaranteed. Mercury's retrograde period is making you aware of the ways things could go wrong. As it turns direct, prepare for things to start going reassuringly right again.
Four minutes on the phone can make August special. Call 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23)
No one likes feeling unsupported. Whether it's a someone, a something or a situation that we can't depend on, it's disconcerting to feel that there's nothing to catch us if we fall. We hope we won't need to use it, but we like to have a safety net to feel secure. Perhaps we need the appearance of security more than we need security itself. As Mercury turns direct this month, with Mars also changing direction, you can start to regain a little assuredness in life. And with a Full Moon 'kite' arriving, you can find enough faith to make bold advances. Inspiring times await you in August. Call your NEW forecast: 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23)
The annual Golden Bull awards are handed out to the writers of the most incomprehensible gibberish written over the past year. The authors of these meaningless masterpieces are often lawyers and academics who think that using convoluted language gives them more authority. This month, with Mercury retrograde in your sign, and Mars retrograde opposite it, there are self-appointed experts telling you that the solution to a problem is fiendishly difficult. But as long as you do what feels right to you, you won't go wrong. Be ready for the magic on offer to you in August. Call 1900 959 005.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) In places where the weather is less than hospitable for many months of the year, a blue sky can seem miraculous. Of course there are also many places on our planet where a raincloud is a reason for great celebration. But whichever meteorological climate we inhabit, we all know what it's like to emerge triumphant on the other side of a dark or difficult period. Overcoming the odds makes victory taste sweet. Mercury's retrograde period will end in August, just before the Sun enters your sign. A fair wind is starting to blow. August brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1900 959 005.
LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) It's been so long since you've had a lucky break that you're half-convinced fortune is avoiding you. But it could be as simple as making a change in your approach to cause it to alter its course and head in your direction. Mars may be retrograde, but its change of direction is imminent. You might have a host of justifications for why something's not worth the effort... but you just need a good reason to hold on. And as your ruler Venus enters your sign later this month, you've definitely got more than one of those. Don't miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for August. Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)
With Mars and Mercury retrograde, your mind is restless. You're fretting, yet no closer to finding an answer. The more you pick at the knot, the tighter and more complicated it seems to become. But, as Jupiter in your sign makes its final trine with Neptune this month, the unraveling of a complex scenario can begin. In truth, no matter how much time you spend thinking about this conundrum, you may never entirely solve it. But when Mercury and Mars turn direct, you'll be able to tie up the loose ends in a very satisfying way. Your in-depth forecast for August is ready. Call 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 December 21)
Since you're in the process of nourishing a seed sown in the fertile soil of your mind, don't be tempted to discard your dreams because they have yet to deliver on their promises. Be willing to play the long game. The final trine between Jupiter and Neptune heralds the last stage of Jupiter's journey towards its homecoming in Sagittarius. Keep a picture in your heart of what you're questing for and follow the instinctive knowledge of your soul. Then you won't stray from the path you're following towards your true destiny. Discover why August has so many opportunities. Call 1900 959 005.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20)
of a speeding roadster than the heavy goods vehicle of the zodiac. This is nevertheless an uncomfortable manoeuvre for it to make and for you to experience. But it's part of ensuring that the road ahead is clear so that you can profit from your ruler's Grand Trine later in August, which will see you shifting through the gears. There is inspiring news in your in-depth August forecast. Call 1900 959 005.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Much of August's celestial activity occurs opposite your sign, including a partial Solar Eclipse and Mercury turning direct. So, it might be easy to think that breakthroughs happen to other folk rather than you. This is especially the case with Mars reversing through Aquarius. But it's not the whole picture. Mars leaves your sign before turning direct, while your ruling planets form a powerful Astrological 'kite' at the Full Moon. Not only will you understand the relevance of your current learning, you'll appreciate the strength it's giving you. Your in-depth forecast for the whole of August can really help. Call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 - March 20)
When Romeo first saw Juliet, he wondered, 'Did my heart love till now?' There's always been a debate about love at first sight. Whether it's infatuation or physical attraction, we recognise that moment. Following the final trine between your rulers this month, the annual Full Moon in your sign forms a magnificent astrological 'kite'. It suggests that you should concentrate on what you can establish for certain. Lucky you! Because, when it comes to opportunities, the sooner you believe what's in front of your eyes, the better! August is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1900 959 005.

THIS MONTH’S MEETING OF BRIBIE MASONIC LODGE
This month’s meeting of Bribie Masonic Lodge was A Christmas in July function at which sitting Master Ron Leth took the opportunity of presenting several acknowledgments. The widow of the lodge founding master Mrs Eunice Dossell was given a memorial presentation case of her husband Keith’s Masonic decorations. The case having been made by long term member David Burey himself the recipient of an award marking his retirement from 14 years as volunteer
bus driver for the Masonic homes for the aged and infirm at Sandgate.
Worshipful Master Ron Leth also presented a cheque for $500. to the girls doing the catering for the night, the Masonic “Daughter” organisation “Job’s Daughters” to help with their forthcoming trip to America furthering their excellent charitable work.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY
Pumistone Passage Probus Club had a jolly time for their Christmas in July . Funny hats ,seasonal clothes and the traditional Christmas lunch. Up in Montville it felt suitably chilly but the view from Secrets on the Lake was beautiful. Turkey dinner with all the trimmings meant everyone enjoyed themselves. There was only one downside !! That
being the Santa didn’t show up however we had it on good authority that he was working overtime with the elves to make sure everyone has a great time with lots of presents in December.
All in all a very pleasant night characterised by much hilarity mirth and good companionship.
BELLARA NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Worshipful Master Ron Leth presented Eunice Dossel with a case that featured her husband Keith's Masonic Decorations
At the Bellara Neighbourhood Watch meeting in July, Superintendent Brady awarded three members with Neighbourhood Watch awards. Lee Martin and Rod Noakes received the Bronze Award for more than three years of volunteering and newsletter delivering for Neighbourhood Watch and Vonnie Barraclough received the
Gold award for more than 13 years of volunteering as newsletter deliverer as well as being treasurer for the community group. Brenda Allardyce, Bernie Murray and Pam Murray were also awarded the Bronze award but were unable to make the ceremony.
Councillor Brook Savige, Simone Wilson MP and Police Inspector Jeffries also congratulated the recipients on their awards. After the awards ceremony, the Bellara NHW AGM was held and the following people were appointed to the committee.

YOUR SAY
RANTS & RAVES
Dear Editor, The P.M. has promised $20,000,000 to perform miracles in the Longman electorate and they are all good. I spoke with both the federal and state LNP people about when will Bribie road at King John creek be raised so thousands of us don't have to use the Old Toorbul Point Road every time Bribie Road floods. I was told that planing may commence in 2020 and it is the responsibility of the State Government Main Roads Department to action, all it needs is a temporary deviation around the present site while it is raised, should only take about 6 months not 10 years, go to it Anna, do Susan a favour. Kev Breslin, Bongaree Dear Editor, As one of Bribie Island's Older residents, I was saddened to see the display of bad manners by our Prime Minister last Friday at Sandstone Point Hotel. As part of his tax-payer funded campaign for his candidate in Longman, he visited the hotel and was questioned by a local lady about various issues, which obviously were discomforting and which he did not want to address. His response was to slide away, grinning and exhorting his candidate to leave the contentious lady because there were "some young people wanting to have photos taken". The emphasis was on "young". Now, Mr Turnbull, it is becoming more and more apparent that you are quite content to pose for "selfies" and only be around people who agree with you. Younger people. Not the outspoken "oldies" who do not stand in awe of your position, but judge you as a man. Your response to the bi-election results
again falls short of displaying any character. Why put up a candidate if you expected that the previous sitting member would be re-elected? Why subject us to months of campaigning, expenditure and tiresome spite if you "knew" that the so-called 98 year old tradition would be upheld. I am at a loss to pinpoint just when our parliament became such an illmannered slanging match between elected members. Call me old-fashioned (or even just "Old") but when I was at Primary school (many many years ago) we were taught in "Civics and Morals" that the majority ruled and respected the minority in our government system. In this current day and age we are constantly celebrating the values of courage, sacrifice and mateship of the fallen in war. You are happy to praise our staunch, brave national character, but gosh, you are the last person I would hope was looking after my back in a tight situation. Perhaps a few snide words and a selfie are the newly accepted marks of manhood? Being old, I am a little out of touch. I look at photos of my family members who fought in the wars, raised families, worked hard all their lives and were good mates to all around them They might not have had the education, privilege and sarcastic wit of you and your "mates", but they were the solid and loveable foundation of this country's values. Their innate decency and respect for others would never have permitted behaviour such as yours. Grace and dignity are the words that spring to mind.
