BRIBIE ISLAND SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Steven Zmuda told me that during that week, and especially on the 20th and 21st, our Bribie Lifesavers will be out with their collection tins and as well as at the Bribie Island Shopping Centre, they will be at a number of other businesses in the area and at the Burpengary Railway Station. They will also be doing a door knock throughout the residential areas.
Both Jenny and Steven stressed the fact that all funds raised by our lifesavers will go directly to the Bribie club. ‘The money stays on the island,’ said Steven. He also happened to mention that the club is keen to hear from anyone who would be interested in a sponsorship and for information on that, he can be contacted on 0439 543 316. s a community, we must consider ourselves very fortunate to live in an area which provides us access to the beautiful serene waters of the Pumicestone Passage and also the golden surf beaches at Woorim. With this in mind, we must take the time to think about the dedicated lifesavers of the Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club who give freely of their time to keep locals and visitors safe whenever they visit those beaches.
Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club VicePresident Jenny Sunner told me recently that the club spends approximately $180,000 annually to keep the patrols on the beach. ‘As well as the expense
of keeping our patrol members up to date with awards and so on, equipment needs to be replaced from time to time,’ said Jenny. ‘To purchase a new defibrillator costs about $2,000 and to replace each of our communications hand-held radios we spend $1,200,’ she explained. Jenny said that at the moment, the club is desperately in need of a new four-wheel drive which will cost about $40,000 so it is easy to understand why the approaching collection week is so vital. In order to raise the funding that is essential to keep our lifesavers on patrol, the Surf Lifesaving movement’s annual collection will run from 15th until 21st October and has the theme, “SOS – Support Our Savers.” Bribie Island SLSC Fundraising Co-Ordinator
Each year, the lifesavers at the Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club dedicate an average of ninety patrol hours each and this should be seen as a reason for their local community to dig deep during this fundraising week which celebrates, supports and raises vitally important funds that help to ensure our lifesaving heroes are always there to help.
For those who wish, donations can be made to the club’s bank account – Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club Gift Account; Westpac, BSB 034119, Account 263583.

REUNION
A CHANCE TO CATCH UP
By Neil Wilson
T
here is quite a lot of evidence which indicates the presence of a number of local residents who have previously spent some years in Papua New Guinea and with this in mind, one ex-pat from the Milne Bay Province is calling for anyone who was in that area in the middle of the last century to contact her in preparation for the next reunion which will be held on September 12th in 2020. The first of these biennial reunions was organised by ex-pat Mike Walke
A 1950's aerial view of the beautiful Samarai Island
and held in Sydney at the Kirribilly RSL in 1997. Mike told me that his family has a very long connection with PNG, especially Samarai Island and Alotau. ‘My grandfather was a shipwright on Samarai Island and he was kept busy repairing the local wooden boats whenever they ran onto one of the reefs,’ said Mike. ‘My father went up there on a two-year assignment with the Bank of New South Wales and, after the two years were up, he liked the place so much that he quit the bank and stayed there,’ he explained. Over the years since the first reunion, the venues have been in various places and although Mike continued on as the organiser for some time, he has passed the job on to others. As someone who was born in PNG and has a long association with Milne Bay Province, Ethel Hayden, nee Morley, has taken on the role of organiser of the 2020 reunion and believes that there are people in our community who would

THIS SOUP IS TWO GOOD A

s an organisation which is arguably one of the most proactive in providing support to the needy within our community, the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre regularly distributes food to many
people each week and therefore is always in need of top-ups for both their pantry and fridges/freezers so when a delivery of soup from the Two Good Company arrived recently, the centre volunteers and management were overjoyed. The Two Good Company is a revolutionary organisation which was founded ten years ago with the mission of being the national provider of beautiful food to domestic violence refuges and soup kitchens in Australia. Founders Rob Caslick and Cathal Flaherty, who are both working engineers, came to realise that one of the most debilitating issues with domestic violence is that it strips victims of their self-worth so the pair made a commitment to show the victims that they are worthy by doing something special. In their operation, they employ

After the delivery truck had left, volunteers Kay Brennan and Jacqui Jackson helped centre manager Cecelia Taylor and counsellor Lindy McAndrew to fill the fridges and freezers with the packages from the many cartons. The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre is at 9 Verdoni

The centre offers a diverse range of services including emergency relief and counselling as well as several courses throughout the year. RALLY
GRANDI’S BACK
I
By Neil Wilson
n a recent issue, I wrote about a local great-grandmother who was about to join her son and his partner on a seven-day car rally to help raise funds for the Starlight Foundation and now I am pleased to let everyone know that she has returned safe and sound but with a very determined comment. ‘It was fun and I’m glad that I went but I certainly don’t want to do it again,’ Lyn Auger (Rally Name “Grandi”) told me. The TREK 4 KIDZ rally that took Lyn, Stewart and Val through much of New South Wales and a part of Queensland
in their old but trusty Lexus began in Port Macquarie on August 17th and after heading north to Toowoomba through many out of the way tracks, made its way down to Goulburn, arriving there on August 24th. Lyn described how, with Stewart and Val in the front for the whole journey, she had a very comfortable ride despite the rough roads. ‘Stewart drove all the way during the rally and I occupied my time taking photos,’ said Lyn. ‘I was constantly calling for Stewart to stop hitting bumps so I could hold the camera still but I guess that was probably not going to happen on some of those roads,’ she added.
2 Tues 21st driving over the Dividing Range the drought is evident.
5 Thursday 23rd outside repco Toowoomba putting in new radiator The intrepid “Grandi” told me that the Lexus did suffer some problems along the way including needing a radiator replacement in Toowoomba and a couple of sets of springs and shockies. ‘When we needed to replace the radiator, Stewart did the job while we were parked in the main street of Toowoomba. It was a bit amusing for anyone who saw us,’ Lyn pointed out. ‘Another particularly funny incident was to do with the rule about having to have lights on when driving through the dusty roads. We got a call from another competitor telling us that our lights weren’t on so Stewart stopped and got out for a look but the lights were working just fine. It didn’t take us long to realise that it was a way of getting ahead of us,’ recalled Lyn. As is always the case with these types of events, the camaraderie which Lyn mentioned was the usual mix of fun and
practical jokes combined with the more serious business of getting from one point to another while obeying the rules and always looking out for one another. Lyn commented that she was devastated by the conditions, both to the land and livestock, that had been caused by the drought. When I spoke to “Grandi” after her return, she told me that at last count, the event had raised about $170,000 and still counting. She made a point of expressing her thanks to sponsors Harcourts, Remax, Nobel and Davis and others such as the Watercolour Working Together Group and her garden club who had helped her team to raise over their initial target of $3,000. Before I left this intrepid adventurer to plan her next adventure, she asked me to make sure that I let everyone know that, “Grandi Lyn says that anyone over seventy has to go on a rally.”

henever I hear the word DREAM, I automatically think about that famous reply by Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) in the movie, “The Castle” when he says, “Tell ‘em they’re dreaming” and the fact that we all dream about things from time to time
will be the theme for the next Bribie Gleemen concert on October 20th.
The Gleemen have entitled their upcoming outing, “Men Can Dream” and Publicity Officer John Gaffy has told me that as a fundraiser to support the Drought Relief campaign, the concert will feature songs that
encourage gentlemanly optimism, wistfulness, valour and regret along with the occasional (but quite appropriate) amorous thoughts. If past performances are any indication, this Saturday afternoon show will be one that should not be missed and seats are expected to
As a band of men with good voices who take pleasure in being able to sing and entertain, the Bribie Gleemen have been performing throughout the district for many years now and it seems that they are becoming more popular each year. After this concert, they will be planning for their Christmas show which will be held at the Uniting Church Hall in December.
The venue for the “Men Can Dream” concert is the Bribie Island Recreation hall in First Avenue and the start time on October 20th is 1.30 pm. Tickets will be sold at the door and admission cost of fifteen dollars will include light refreshments. For anyone who wishes to make a further donation to the Drought Appeal, there will be a collection bucket at the door.

PROFILE
ISLANDER EXTRAORDINAIRE CATHERINE BILSON
W
hilst making beautiful hand-crafted jewellery and writing romance novels certainly requires quite a considerable amount of talent, it is highly unlikely that anyone could regard either of the two as falling into the category of rocket science but, even if that was the case, local author and jewellery maker Catherine Bilson would have the necessary qualifications.
Catherine, the youngest of four children, grew up in a rather remote part of North Wales on her parents’ sheep farm and she explained to me that as well as being a farmer, her father was also a builder. ‘As a child, I learned to do things such as lay bricks and tiles,’ said Catherine. ‘Other than the plumbing and electrical work, my father believed in doing the work himself and I learned a number of skills because of that,’ she said. Catherine told me that while still living on the farm, she was particularly
fond of horse riding and although never serious about competition events, she did ride in gymkhanas from time to time and worked at the riding school that was across the road from her home. ‘It was a good way to earn some money and as well as that, I worked as a waitress at my sister’s hotel in the evenings,’ she said. Identified by the school as being very adept at mathematics and science,
a trait that she believes that was inherited from her father, Catherine was steered away from the arts in favour of a career in a science and, following her years at school, she commenced a three year university course at Southampton, graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering. ‘There were three girls and forty guys on the course but, even though we were the minority, the guys all respected our right to be there,’ Catherine recalled. ‘After three weeks they were treating me like their sister and after five weeks, they were even vetting my dates. That actually made it hard to get a date sometimes,’ she added. Immediately after graduating, Catherine’s skills were quickly enlisted by British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) and she went to work as a rocket scientist, involved in projects such as the Mars Rover and integrating missiles into the new Eurofighter. She also worked on missiles that were to be used during the Desert Storm conflict. As one of very few girls that were employed as engineers by a defence
contractor, Catherine’s ability to convert technical jargon into easy to understand language was called upon many times and this meant working extra hours on top of her normal duties. ‘The result of working so hard was an eventual burnout and I was left with no choice but to resign early in 2001,’ said Catherine. ‘My boyfriend (now husband) Nick is Australian and we decided to move to the land down under, eventually settling on Bribie Island after spending a period of time travelling around. I found work with a local building company and Nick went to work in the hospitality industry,’ she told me. Some years on, and with the desire to work for themselves, the couple bought the Retravision Store in Kilcoy which they operated for seven years until the effect of the Global Financial Crisis forced them to close the doors. ‘The hardest thing that I’ve ever done was to put our staff out of work but we had no choice,’ Catherine said regretfully. Following this obviously hard time in her life, Catherine made the decision to concentrate on her longtime

By Neil Wilson passion for writing and this is now one of her two main sources of income. ‘My mum taught me to read when I was only three years old and she would leave me alone with a big pile of books. I would stay there and amuse myself for hours but I was never happy about how the stories ended, I wanted to write my own endings,’ Catherine remarked. ‘I have been writing forever and, like most writers, I have all these characters running around in my head. After I decided to re-commence writing, I discovered that there are some works by authors such as Jane Austin which are now out of copywrite and this means that people like me are able to write books which are based on their work. I wrote a book called “Mrs Gardner Knows” which I self-published on Amazon and, to my absolute surprise, it made about $3,000 in the first month so that was a great encouragement to keep going,’ she explained. When someone is as super talented as the extraordinary Catherine Bilson, it comes as little surprise to learn that she is adept at a lot more than just
writing a good romance novel and, when she said that she has been making jewellery from not long after moving to our beautiful island, somehow it just seemed to be what one would naturally expect. ‘On one of my days off from running display homes, I wandered into the Gem and Fossicking Club and I guess the rest is history. After learning the basics, I taught myself a lot more from books and ended up with a diverse set of skills,’ said Catherine. ‘As well as now having a long-standing amount of loyal customers, I sell some jewellery at the markets, mainly the Bribie Vibe Markets at the Arts Centre, and I do a
lot of repair work for customers such as re-stringing beads and so on, working from home. I also volunteer as a tutor for the Gem Club,’ she pointed out. Although he does work as a sales representative, Catherine’s husband Nick also runs an online business from home, selling Leggo parts and apparently, people will pay quite a lot of dollars for the right piece. The couple has two boys, Kieran who is twelve and also nine years old Connor. Catherine tells me that they are both very sporty like their dad.
I am not usually lost for the right words when describing someone but in this instance, I have been tossing up between gifted, dedicated and talented but I think that the appropriate description for Catherine Bilson is,

spent more time on the water than anyone who has previously featured in this series, considering his nine years of service in the Royal Australian Navy.
Having joined the RAN in 1964, Barry served some of his time on board the anti-submarine frigate “Paramatta” and he explained to me that during that time, the vessel was tasked with escorting the HMAS Sydney in and out of Vietnamese waters. ‘Although we were involved in the Vietnam War, I really don’t regard myself as a veteran,’ said Barry. ‘Those blokes who were on the ground getting shot at, they are the real veterans,’ he added. As well as his time on the “Paramatta,” Barry also served on a survey ship before returning to civilian life in 1973.

The next chapter of Barry’s life saw him rise to middle management ranks as a Senior Lines Officer with Telecom and, after accepting a redundancy package, he spent the following seven years as a taxi operator. ‘You can only drive a taxi for a certain amount of time before you need to quit,’ Barry pointed out. ‘After I sold my taxi business, my wife and I made the decision to move to Bribie Island in 1998. I had visited the island many times when I was young,’ he said. As someone who has a passion for fitness and the water, Barry soon became a member of the Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club and from that time, he has been involved with many

facets of the club’s activities over the last sixteen years. He was Club Captain for two years, the Surf lifesaving Club President for two years and also President of the Supporters’ Club for another two year period. Barry described his love of rowing surf boats and explained that he has only recently given that away due to a problem with one of his knees. In recognition of his service to the club, Barry was made a Life Member in 2017. After the onset of his knee problems, Barry began to consider other ways to continue his passion for water activities as well as to maintain his level of fitness and, as luck would have it, the Bribie Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club had recently been founded, providing him with the ideal solution. Barry has now attained the necessary qualifications to act as one of the

Mahalo Club coaches and he told me that he regards outrigger canoeing as a great low impact sport which is suitable for all age groups.
The Bribie Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club operates from their premises next to the Bribie VMR and their club days are on Sundays from 9 am. Anyone who would like to discover the enjoyment of outrigger canoeing is welcome to attend on the club days and for further information, those interested can call Mahalo Club President CC Wilson on 0418 450 701.

FIT FOR A BARON MUSEUM
W
By Neil Wilson
hilst Baron Manfred Von Richthofen (the Red Baron) met his death over one hundred years ago when his famous red Fokker Tri-Plane was shot down over France and even after so long, his reputation and that of the red Fokker live on and images appear, sometimes unexpectedly, from time to time in various documentaries and other media.
As a matter of fact, there is even a brand of pure honey that bears that image on the label and, surprise, surprise, that product can be bought at the TAVAS (The Australian Vintage Aviation Society) Museum at the Caboolture Airfield where
there is also a true replica of the Baron’s aircraft.
The honey is produced and packaged by aviator and TAVAS member Kevin and his assistants who guarantee that the honey is absolutely 100% pure and I have been told that after the extraction process, the honey is again filtered to remove any left-over wax. Andrew Carter of TAVAS pointed out that if someone wants to buy the honey, which by the way tastes fantastic and has revitalised my love of the stuff, they can do so without having to pay an entry fee for the museum. With recent reports that some of the major honey producers may have inadvertently selling honey that has been mixed with other substances, boutique apiarists across the country
Honey fit for a (Red) Baron are seeing an increasing demand for a honey that has not been heated or processed in any other way. From what I have been told by the TAVAS team, the ever-increasing sales of the “Honey with the Red Baron Label” are proof of that. The TAVAS Museum is on McNaught
Road at Caboolture Airfield and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am until 3 pm. Anyone who really appreciates the taste of pure honey should definitely head to the museum to pick up a bottle. I reckon it’s so good that it’s fit for a (Red) baron.

STRONGER COMMUNITIES
A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN Many of you will receive my newsletter in the mail soon, thanking you for your support in the recent election. But it’s important you know how humbled I am to be chosen by you again to represent the people in this wonderful community. Since my re-election, some things have changed and some things have stayed the same. Scott Morrison is our new Prime Minister, although, we’ve got the same old Liberal policies. The cuts to our local schools and Caboolture Hospital are still being swept through and the Liberals are still fighting with each other. Meanwhile, I’m getting on with the job that you elected me to do. I’m continuing on, working with people in our community to improve our healthcare and education system, local services and jobs. Your Electorate Office has hit the ground running, working on lots of important things like the Stronger
Communities Programme. With help from a team of local community leaders, we’re working to identify funding for projects that will make our great area an even better place to live. We’ve also planned some upcoming mobile offices – you can find the details below. My team and I regularly get out and do community outreach, knocking on doors and helping people with issues. If you see us out-andabout, please stop by and say hi!

STANDING WITH OUR VETERANS – LABOR’S COMMITMENT TO SIGN A MILITARY COVENANT
Over time, Governments have provided a system of Veterans Affairs and support, which I think we can agree, has let our veteran community down at times. Whenever I hear of a veteran being let down by the system, it frustrates me. It frustrates me because I know about the sacrifices our veterans have made,
and the physical and psychological trauma they’ve undergone to keep our country safe. It should be government’s responsibility to stand behind and look after our defence force personnel. Our veteran community desperately needs a solution, which is why I’ve made it a priority to work with a

Shorten-Labor Government to sign a military covenant. This is a formal pact entered into by the Prime Minister and the Chief of Defence which promises to look after personnel who are currently serving, and those who have left. Part of Labor’s plan is to put in place a reporting and accountability mechanism which will require governments to report annually to parliament on how they are meeting their responsibilities under the covenant. I’ll be working hard to make sure Labor is elected, so that we can put this important agreement in place and make sure that our defence personnel are getting the support they need.
I know it’s hard trying to make it into the office during the week. So, we’re coming to you! Feel free to come along to any of the mobile offices below and raise any issues – we’re here to help!

PET CARE
SENIOR DOGS - PART ONE -
By Yvonne Bishop
The last few issues
have been written about adolescent dogs. Congratulations you have survived! Then for the next few years your dog is an adult and his behaviour is predictable and life is normal. The last stage is the senior years. This can be the best time of your life with them. A lot of dogs seem to be more loving and cuddly at this stage. When does old age starts? It differs with size of breeds – giant and large breeds can start from 7 years old whereas small and medium size breeds from 8 to 9 years old. How do you know your dog is ageing? It helps to identify the signs and this will help you to manage any health problems from any early stage. Some of the common signs are reluctant to go
for walks, changes in their eating habits, consumption of water intake, even changes in their behaviour for eg starting to toilet in inappropriate places. First call is to have a full vet check because if there are signs of illness or beginning of arthritis it can be treated. Your vet will be able to advice on treatment. They can also check to see if the dog has cataracts or loss of hearing. Another and the most obvious sign is loss of hair and the hair becoming grey and dull. Any behavioural changes as some dogs start to become upset about things that may have never worried them in the past, such as separation anxiety and noise phobias. I always suggest to take the dog to the vet first to make sure any changes is not caused by a health problem before seeing me or any dog behavioural trainer. Happy Training, Yvonne

FINALLY, A GOOD TICK TREATMENT With paralysis tick season upon us, please treat your dogs and cats preventatively. There is no excuse
not to, as Bravecto is now available for cats as a dab-on giving paralysis tick and flea cover for 3 months, and also as a dab-on for dogs giving paralysis tick and flea cover for 6 months. One tick episode could cost as much as a lifetime’s worth of tick preventative for your pet, if they survive. Tick paralysis is a terrible way to die, causing heart failure and the breathing muscles to seize, leading to death by slow suffocation and drowning. Native animals are unaffected as they co-evolved with the Australian paralysis tick and have adapted accordingly.

uring the era of the mid1900’s, the lives of many people around the world were impacted by the crusades of Dr Billy Graham, and he became someone who was not only extremely well known but also loved by all who heard his message. Sadly, Dr Graham passed away earlier this year and, as a special tribute to him, there will be a
concert on October 22st at the Church of Christ in Foley Street.
During the concert which is expected to run for approximately one hour, the members of the church choir will sing songs that were made famous through Dr Graham’s crusades and there will also be a guest performance by a saxophone and vocal duo. Whilst the concert is free, there will be a
Dr Billy Graham chance for those who wish to donate toward the School Chaplaincy.
Event organisers have told me that everyone is welcome to attend and afternoon tea will be provided at the conclusion of the concert. Anyone who would like to find out more should call Marilyn on 5497 7570 or Margaret on 3408 9497.

t is a fact that more than 70 percent of businesses in Australia are family owned and on Bribie Island that figure is probably much higher. There’s a certain understanding and trust that comes when working with a family business.
When family works together and share their wins and achievements, it’s not just a job, but they have the future of their family invested. This is often reflected in their business practices and how they relate to their clients and customers, which benefits from that investment and trust. Husband and wife team Robert and Yvette Barns, owners of Interlock Screen & Door Services, is proud to be a Bribie Island owned and operated family business, servicing Bribie Islanders and the the Moreton Bay Region.
Robert said that window screens and screen doors are common features of construction in most parts of Australia. They allow the circulation of air in hot weather whilst preventing insects from entering a premises. However effective they are in keeping insects out, fly
screens offer very little security and can be easily broken through.
“Security screen doors and window grilles on the other hand are strong enough to withstand most attempts at forced entry while retaining the advantages of flyscreens. They can also be installed on all types of windows and doors, including hinged and sliding,” said Robert.
Their business provides and installs high quality stainless steel and aluminium security screens and doors into homes and commercial premises. As well as installing new Prowler Proof security screens and doors the business also offers a mobile repair service on existing screens and doors, including a very popular pet door installation service.
“We are different to many other security companies in that our customers deal directly with us, the owners of the business from the first point of contact through to quoting, measuring and installing,” said Robert. “We both work hard to meet our customers needs. Yvette is the first point of contact and takes care of all the enquiries and job bookings while I
“The Prowler Proof products are manufactured in a fully automated world-class factory in Brisbane which I have visited and seen first hand. They invest a lot in research and development and manufacture a fantastic product,” he said.
visit the customers homes or business premises to measure, quote and install,” he said.
According to Robert the business was established three and half years ago and he has been in the security screen and door industry for the past seven years.
Robert also proudly points to being a member of the National Security Screens Association and says he and Yvette both invest significant time in keeping up with the latest trends in developments affecting the industry.
“As a small family business we depend on referrals from our customers. That’s why we always offer honest advice, personal service and high quality madeto-measure security doors and screens with an after-service second to none,” he said.
He said their business slogan “We Don’t Just Screen It, We Secure It, Because Your Protection Is Our Priority” pretty much sums up the business.
Being actively engaged with the Bribie community is also very important to the owners according to Yvette.
“We are part of the local community and having a young family we are proud to be a major sponsor of the Bribie Island Little Athletics,” said Yvette. “Of course providing security measures for the home also sees us sponsor the Bellara Neighbourhood Watch.” Robert said that being an authorised dealer with Prowler Proof means they can supply their customers with Australian made, high quality products.

and How to Train your Dragon 3. Don’t you just love the momentum of hero-films and the undercurrents of underdogs rising to the challenge, beating the enemy, saving the world and winning their love? Yes! We all either look up to or fall in love with the hero, don’t we? But, have you ever thought that we identify with that character because, in some way, we want to be the hero? If you think about it, our lives are like a movie. There are twists and turns, struggles and triumphs, love and beauty. And we are the main physical character. With each decision we make, we write the stories of our lives that are being read by others every day. With that in mind, and without being morbid, don’t you think that at the end of this life you want to leave a legacy? To have someone read the story of your life and just think, ‘wow’. Or simply smile. Everyone wants the hero to win. They want the enemy to be utterly defeated, smashed, conquered, obliterated and our protagonist to shine in glory. Well, it’s no different in our own lives. Each to our own are personal battles, and the time to give up is never. No one would go to a film where the hero just decides to give up
Kerry’s
and walk away in the heat of war. What is that!!? No, we want to see you fight and we want to see you win. And when you win, it gives us the hope that we too are victors. See in the 21st century, the modernfamily life that gets broadcasted daily makes this world out to be so suburban. But isn’t there something deep within you that longs for more? That feels that the rhythm in great films cannot be just fiction. That there is a heartbeat out there in the universe much bigger than we think or know. And that we are meant to be connected to a greater purpose? The magic of life comes alive when you believe. When you trust that whatever is going around you isn’t the be all and end all. That there is more than just earth and space and planets. That your life has purpose and meaning and destiny. Moreover, that there is a love more satisfying, deeper, more securing then any love we’ve ever known out there for us. So leave your legacy, be the hero people look up to. Because we are all watching each other and keeping each other accountable. At the end of it, if we don’t give up and keep our hope, faith and love alive there will be much celebrating and joy! The end. Just kidding, it’s just the beginning…

If you sleep with a partner, does his or her turning disturb your sleep?
Modern mattress technology will help you sleep through the night, especially when the motion transfer from your partner wakes you. Consider pocketed coil mattresses with quality layers of memory foam to dampen the movement you feel in bed.

MATTRESS BUYER’S CHECKLIST
O
ur years of helping to solve people's sleep issues have left us with some great tips and tricks to help you get the best night's sleep possible. Finding the perfect mattress is tricky, but we've nailed the process and are here to provide all the advice you need to start sleeping better. Use the list of articles below, and spend time researching which mattress features fit your sleep needs. Jot down your sleep details and come into any Bedshed store to find a mattress that will help you get a restful night’s sleep. Our helpful staff are ready and waiting to find your perfect mattress.
How old is your current mattress?
If your mattress is more than eight years old, sagging, lumpy or keeping you awake at night, it’s time to invest in a new mattress. Foam and ticking break down over time, may build up allergens like dust, pollen and spores, becoming unhealthy for you at night.
What size mattress is right for you?
Consider the height of the people sleeping on the mattress and how much room there is in the bedroom.
Should you get an adjustable bed, a mattress for a slat base or a mattress and base (an ensemble)? Look at what kind of support you and your mattress need to get a good night’s sleep. An adjustable mattress can make you more comfortable, especially if you find you need to elevate your feet or your torso while in bed. If you prefer a traditional mattress, the proper bed base is an important part of supporting your mattress and your body. These two articles explain the reasons behind adjustable beds, slat base beds and mattress bases.
Do you have a bad back or difficulty getting into and out of bed?
Consider the height of your mattress and bed. In addition to the size of the mattress, decide if your current bed is too high or too low. Try out the bed heights on display and purchase a new bed and mattress together to get the proper bed height.
Talk to your local Bedshed staff about delivery. If you have friends or family helping you move your new mattress into your bedroom, don’t fold or bend your mattress. When moving house, don’t stack furniture on top of your mattress, because the furniture will damage the ticking, foam and edges. Our Bedshed stores carry a wide range of mattress brands such as Sealy, Sleepmaker, Kingsdown, Tempur, Dreamsense and Insignia. Need that bed right now? We offer flexible financing. Find the feel, size and quality you are looking for at the price you can afford.

BLACKNECKED STORK
EPHIPPIORHYNCHUS ASIATICS
COMMON NAME – JABIRU
Bath time for this female from the hide and a little too far away to get a good photograph but I enjoyed watching it for about an hour when it wandered off into the bush and out of sight. I have seen Jabirus at Buckley’s Hole before but it is always a thrill when one appears.

I
t was a Thursday morning when I received a call from a friend to say that a Jabiru was feeding at Buckley’s Hole. Such a visitor was not a very common occurrence. Unfortunately I had prior commitments on both Thursday and Friday and was unable to investigate. Saturday
Jabirus are fairly uncommon breeding residents on Bribie Island and are Australia’s largest wading bird. The name Jabiru is a Brazilian name for a stork which inhabits Central and South America Female, note beautiful colours and has little resemblance to our one and on head and neck only Australian stork. The rather boring name Black-necked Stork replaced Jabiru was a free morning so I took myself down several years ago, but most people still to Buckley’s with not much hope of the refer to it as “Jabiru”. After about half an hour a Jabiru flew in and landed at the far end of the lagoon and began feeding. It was a good distance
Black-necked Storks do not have black necks. They look black from a distance but are actually blueish green in colour. With a huge black bill and long neck, black and white plumage, long red legs the Jabirus are large, stately birds. Males and females have similar plumage but can be distinguished by their eyes. Males have brown eyes whereas females have distinctive yellow eyes. Juveniles are like adults with brown plumage instead of black and off white instead of white feathers. They stand 129150 cm tall with a 230 cm wingspan and weigh approximately 4 kg. Jabirus have a lifespan of about 30 years. In flight they are stretched out with head and neck extended and their long legs trailing straight out behind. Movement of their wings is slow, and they are able to reach high altitudes to soar and make use of the thermals. They do not have voice boxes so are usually silent but can communicate by clapping their bills particularly at nesting time. Other

In flight - note outstretched neck and legs birds normally have two voice boxes which enable some birds to make two calls at the one time. When feeding, Jabirus move slowly and purposefully while stalking their prey such as fish, eels, frogs, baby turtles and turtle eggs, small crabs, snakes and insects. Large prey such as snakes etc are beaten and prodded until they become manageable enough to be eaten. They hunt alone in water from 5-30 cm deep.
Breeding can take place by the mostly monogamous parents at almost any time but from March to May seems to be the most favoured time. Their untidy nests high up in a tree and usually near water are huge and made of sticks being 1.2 m – 1.6 m across and up to 1 m deep. 2-4 white eggs are laid and incubated by both parents
for about 30 days. Both parents also help tend to the young. Adult birds fly out for food which they swallow and regurgitate to feed the chicks. Sometimes water is carried to the chicks in the adults’ bills. Young birds remain in the nest for about 100-115 days and are fed by both parents. When they are ready to fly they are taught by their parents to leave the nest. I once watched a patient parent trying to coax a recalcitrant youngster to leave the nest. I watched for hours but the youngster kept refusing to take the final step. I had to leave in the end but believe the youngster flew off the next day. From a clutch of chicks usually only one will survive so their population expansion is understandably slow. John Gould while studying the Jabiru noted that the meat had a fishy taste and not very palatable. To some of the Aboriginal tribes the meat was taboo. They believed that by eating the meat an unborn baby could cause the death of the mother. Early Aborigines have several stories relating to the Jabiru. The bill is described as a spear that went through the head of the bird. As we know the Jabiru has no voice box and an early Aboriginal story is that Jabirus once had a beautiful singing voice. The Kookaburra was envious as he could not sing at all. One night the Kookaburra waited for the Jabiru to fall asleep then crept up on the unsuspecting

Juvenile feeding at Buckley's Hole bird and cut out its voice box. After that the Jabiru couldn’t sing at all. When it heard the loud cackling laughter of the Kookaburra it then knew that the Kookaburra had stolen its voice.
Jabirus were also part of Indian folk lore. In one area the young men were expected to capture a Jabiru alive before they could marry. Jabirus when threatened can become quite ferocious and after a youth was killed by an angry bird in the 1920’s
the practice was discontinued.
The most significant threats facing Jabirus are the loss of habitat through development, pollution of waterways, disappearing wetlands, and powerlines. With their huge wingspan powerlines can be a problem during flight. Conservation status in Qld, NT, WA is secure but in NSW the species is endangered. They are not found in the other states of Australia.

eather White of the Bribie Island Orchestra has just announced that the upcoming Spring Concert on October 14th will feature a performance by classical guitarist Liam Doyle who will be playing the works of Heitor Villa-Lobos.
Those who are aware of the Bribie Island Orchestra concerts already know just how enjoyable these events are so
when a musician such as Doyle is added to the program, what already promises to be a “must attend” for music lovers now becomes an “if you miss it you’ll be sorry”. Heather has told me that the evening will also feature a special performance from the wind section.
The concert will be held in the Bribie Island Retirement Village Hall on Foley Street and commences at 6.30 pm. These shows are always very well attended so bookings are essential. Call Heather on 5497 5818 to secure tickets.

VACCINATION
WORLD POLIO DAY 24 OCTOBER 2018 By by Anne Matthews, Public Relations Director, Bribie Rotary
I
n 1988 Polio was a disease that paralysed more than 350,000 children every year. At the beginning of this 2018, just 30 years after Rotary started its “End Polio” campaign, that number had reduced to 22 cases worldwide. This statistic does not include the very recent cases in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
In the year 2000, PNG was declared Poliofree but as at 18 September 2018 there are now 12 confirmed cases of the disease. These cases are vaccine-derived cases, not
“wild” polio cases. This means it is a mutated version of the weaker polio virus used in vaccinations. Vaccine-derived polio viruses are rare, and usually happen in populations with very low vaccination rates. They develop when children who have not been vaccinated come into contact with the faeces of vaccinated children.
In response to this recent outbreak the PNG government commenced an emergency vaccination campaign in Port Moresby on 24 September, with a nationwide campaign on 1 October. The Rotary Clubs of PNG who form part Rotary District 9600, which includes Bribie Island, are playing an import part in mobilising the vaccination programs.
Most of our older readers will indeed remember a friend or school mate who suffered from polio. Those who are fans of "Call the Midwife" will remember the distress for Dr Turner and Shelagh when Timothy is diagnosed with disease. The 2017 film "Breathe" is the true story of Robin Cavandish who contracts Polio at age 28 and then devotes his life to

been achieved and am very sad to instead have to write about this setback in PNG.
Rotarian Susanne Rea OAM, a Polio survivor and founder of the World's Greatest Meal giving the oral vaccination to a young boy in India las year
There is still NO cure for polio, it can only be prevented by immunisation. The first polio vaccine was the inactivated polio vaccine. It was developed by Jonas Salk and came into use in the 1950s. The oral polio vaccine was developed by Albert Sabin and came into commercial use in 1961. While many who contract polio will survive to live their lives well, some will die from the disease – especially those living in remote areas of countries like PNG. Polio is not just a disease of the poor or third world. It was prevalent in countries such as the USA, England and Australia – where the rich and famous also suffered - but is now confined to a very few a countries around the world. Last year my predecessor, Barry Clark, wrote that Polio was on the brink of eradication and told of the one Billion Dollar commitment from Rotary International to finish the fight and end this disease forever. This year, I was hoping I would be able to report that this goal had
However, the PNG cases highlight the importance of continuing the vaccination program. Smallpox is the only human disease ever eradicated. Let’s make polio the second. Join the fight on World Polio Day 24 October 2018. Join the Rotary Club of Bribie Island who have registered their webinar as a World's Greatest Meal to help End Polio and know that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will add $2 to every dollar that you raise towards Rotary's End Polio Campaign.
WGM is a program in which people host meals, anything from two people having lunch to elaborate gourmet dinners, or a BBQ or morning or afternoon tea and ask for donations to Rotary's End Polio Campaign. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had numerous events registered across Bribie Island on 24 October. Details on how to organise a meal can be found at http://wgmeal.com/ . Please register your event in the name of the Rotary Club of Bribie Island and make sure you also report the event and that your donation is a minimum of US$10. If you don't have access to the Internet then ring me on 0409 244 005 and I will arrange the registration. Keep in mind that EVERY DOLLAR you raise will mean $3 to the Campaign.

MONEY
Access your Super Transition to Retirement Pension -TTRP
MONEY TALK with Peter Dallimore Peter Dallimore is a volunteer Financial Counsellor at the Bribie Island Neighbourhood Centre
I
f you are still working and have reached preservation age that is between 55 and 60 depending on when you were born, a transitionto-retirement pension enables you to access your super in the form of a pension without retiring. A TTRP lets you ease into retirement, top up your income, continue to receive employer contributions and reduce tax on your income. TTRPs were introduced in July 2005 to help those who wanted to transition to retirement via part-time work. By starting a TTRP, you don’t have to retire to withdraw your super benefits. You can work part-time, fulltime or even casually. TTRPs became less attractive in July 2017 when the government changed the tax rules on super monies used to fund a TTRP. Pre July 2017 the income on these monies was tax-free. Since July 2017 these monies are now taxed at 15% as are other earnings in the fund so the tax savings are now less than they were but TTRP’s still have the other benefits mentioned above and detailed below.
If your income is not sufficient to cover your costs you can use a TTRP to top it up. The maximum amount that you can draw in a year is limited to 10% of your fund balance. You must also meet the minimum draw requirement that is 4% of your fund balance if you are under 65. By continuing to work you will continue to receive employer contributions that Present this voucher to receive...

will help balance out the amount you take out in pension payments. If you are aged 60 or older, in most cases, your pension payments will be tax-free. If you are aged 55-59 then the taxable portion of your pension payments will be taxed at your marginal tax rate, however you will receive a 15% tax offset.
A TTRP used in conjunction with salary sacrifice lets you increase your super nest egg by an amount dependant on your marginal tax rate. The TTRP can replace the income sacrificed into your super fund so that you can cover your living costs and the amount of income sacrificed can exceed the TTRP amount because of the lower rate of tax payable on salary sacrificed contributions. You need to ensure that the sum of your employer super contributions and the amount that you salary sacrifice does not exceed the maximum allowable concessional

Finally a relatively unknown loophole in the Superannuation Guarantee Contribution (SGC) rules enables an employer to cut an individual’s SGC entitlements when an employee reduces their taxable salary via a salary sacrificing arrangement. So check with your employer whether or not salary sacrificing will reduce your employer’s contribution to your super.

y friend Philip certainly leans to the left in life, it is rumoured he even has a Gough Whitlam tattoo on his right buttock but it is unlikely this will ever be proved. With this in mind, I doubt whether he is a regular reader of Des Houghton in the week-end Courier Mail with his political views but Houghton also writes a wine and food section in The Weekend Courier Mail which I enjoy reading. Each week he reviews a selection of wines from various vineyards with a bit of a story on each then opposite is usually a photo with the price, often well out of the average wine drinkers range as in the case of this week when he reviewed The House of Arras sparkling wines from Tasmania the prices were $60 for the 2007 Rose, $250 for the 2007 Grand Vintage and $350 for the 2001 Blanc de Blanc. Having been in the situation to try to get reviews for wines that I represented in Western Australia the wines you want the reviewer to look at would have been delivered to the writer either to his office or their home address. They don’t pop into the local bottle shop and buy anything, the wine company hopes the reviewer will be suitably impressed to write an article as it could mean extra sales. Likewise, when the time of the year comes when the top 100 reds and whites are announced you will drop off your sample wines and will be confronted with cartons of wine from other wineries which all have to be tasted, it’s a hard job but someone has to do it! I once picked up the number one pick with Richard Hamilton Burtons Vineyard Bush Vines Grenache from McLaren Vale and promptly sold hundreds of cases on the article in the paper. Even better about ten years ago one of my agencies, Witchmount from Victoria, won a trophy at the Syrah du Monde tasting in France for the best Shiraz in the world, it was mentioned on the television, the radio and in the newspapers and I had just taken a delivery of nearly 400 cases in Western Australia, within days it had sold out and when you work on a commission
THE BRIBIE
WINELANDER with Philip Arlidge, arlidge@bigpond.com.au basis it is like winning Lotto.
In the restaurant article Mr Houghton enquired of the Grand Crus Restaurant in The Fortitude Valley why they didn’t have any Queensland wines on their wine list and the sommelier replied that they were all mediocre, which was a big mistake, it never pays to use words like this especially when the person you are speaking to is about to review your business. Although the quality of Queensland wines have certainly improved in recent times they still carry an image of wines being made in a State that is known for its climate rather than its winemaking prowess and if you are not familiar with The Granite Belt it is an image that is difficult to overcome and as in other regional winemaking areas overpriced.
Wines on a wine list are always marked up be at least three-fold or more which covers the cost of glass breakage, service, wages, rent etc. in fact I once read that one premium restaurant spending $17,000 replacing broken glass wear one year, so purchasing a local wine that would probably cost around $60 or more for a bottle of unknown wine would be a difficult decision for most diners to make which is why a lot of restaurants don’t stock them. Also most Queensland wineries do not have representation being relatively small and rely on cellar door sales and visitors to the Granite Belt region, apart from Sirromet Wines who have built a magnificent cellar door on Mt. Cotton Road Mt. Cotton and they have good coverage all over Queensland, if you are ever in the vicinity pay a visit to this winery which would match any in Australia.

There has been a steady growth over recent years in organic wines, especially with more and more people suffering from various allergies. To qualify for organic certification a winery has to show that for at least three years they have followed a strict path of not using man-made fertilizers, sprays or some preservatives. Although the market has risen by huge increases in recent years the starting base figure was very small and you still have to search out where the liquor outlet keep their range, basically making these wines means following practices that every winery used in times past before chemical companies became involved. A couple of the wineries that produce very good quality organic wines are Angove’s the leading organic wine producer with their McLaren Vale selection and Temple Brewer, but many more are converting their winemaking operation which should improve the enjoyment of wine drinking to more consumers. Preservative-free wines are different, there have been many attempts to market these wines over the years but it hasn’t proved too successful as they don’t develop well and have to be drunk pretty quickly and as many wine drinkers enjoy a bit of bottle age this doesn’t work.
It may surprise readers who only drink Australian wine that the biggest brand in the world currently is a label called Barefoot which is owned by E and J Gallo of America. Sales last year globally were a staggering 22.5 million cases, Concha Y Toro came in number two with 16.5 million cases and Yellow Tail was the largest Australian brand at 11.5 million cases with Hardy’s the next Australian
As Summer approaches it’s time to ditch Sauvignon Blanc and your perception of Rose wines, this style has grown in sales year upon year and the old memories of pink lolly water is a thing of the past. There is now a style to suit everyone, from sweeter style to bone dry and are a perfect accompaniment to most dishes and refreshingly cold out of the fridge. Most red wine varieties can be used to make rose as it involves crushing the grapes and then just a modest time with the skins which will impart a pink hue to the wine. If you enjoy a dryer style try one of these Jacobs Creek, Turkey Flat (the largest selling wine) Jacobs Creek Le Petit, Deepwoods Harmony, Shingleback Red Knot, Woodstock Grenache and Angove’s Nine Vines the prices will vary from around $6 to $20. For sweeter tooths the ever popular Mateus and Brown Brothers Moscato.

ABOUT SALT ART
For the Second Time The Capricorn Coast by Colin Van Kruining
Mignon Philpot's acrylic - Knowing the Way
I
By Neil Wilson
n some of the early issues of The Mini Bribie Islander, I wrote a series of articles which explained the good and bad qualities of a number of foods and additives to which I seem to be addicted and one of these was salt. Now, more than one year on from that article, I am again writing about salt but this
time, it is not related to something that is known to be a frequently used flavour enhancer. Until September 23rd, the Mathew Flinders Gallery at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre was the venue for an exhibition by twenty invited artists from the area which has been on display from September 10th and officially opened on September 14th. The exhibition is
Pumicestone Passage Sunset by Mignon Philpot entitled, yes, you guessed it, “SALT,” and a spokesperson for the group has pointed out that, “As salt is essential for life – it is also the stimulus for the artwork in the display.” All the pieces in the exhibition which include pottery and mosaics as well as both large and small

WHO'S IDEA WAS IT TO BUY A CAFE?
O
By Richard Whetlor
ne sunny morning in the land of Bribie my wife Selina said to me that she was going to look for some work on Bribie. That's a tricky one, to find a job on the island I thought to myself. Well not long before that the owner of By The Sea Cafe (Rina) situated next door to The Bribie Islander news office, asked me if I wanted to buy her Cafe, which, she had up for sale at the time, and I thought not a chance! What do I know about running a Cafe? Nothing...so we bought a Cafe.
Selina's By The Sea Cafe (which was the first name we thought of) is now called "The Bribie Islander Cafe" which overlooks the beautiful Pumicestone Passage, situated a couple of doors up from Bongaree Hot Bread, next door to Kellie's Straight Edge Barbers and La Vera Restaurant, situated in the Bongaree Arcade where the

As the new owners, we welcome you to come on down and give us a go. Sample our fine food and yummy MIO Coffee, freshly ground. A group of customers who were here on holiday kept coming back and ordering 2 or 3 coffees with their meals. So I asked them if they would write a review for our new cafe and tell their story and experiences that they have had and obviously enjoyed! Here it is via an email: "Having just spent a week on the idyllic Bribie Island, we optimised our stay with the best coffee on the island at “The Bribie Islander Cafe”. Excellent coffee, varied choices of light healthy food, nice caring staff. Sipping coffee whilst outside looking over the beautiful Pumicestone Passage” on beautiful Bribie! HEALTH
LIVING WITH CHRONIC PAIN By VERONICA MERCER Mental Health Accredited Social Worker
“Without pain, there would be no suffering, without suffering we would never learn from our mistakes. To make it right, pain and suffering is the key to all windows, without it, there is no way of life. - Angelina Jolie Definition:
Pain is hard to define because it's a subjective sensation. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as an "unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage." Pain is the most common reason that people seek medical attention. Pain. that persists over a long period of time – usually 3 months or longer; beyond the healing period of tissue damage, is deemed chronic pain. The causes of chronic pain can be complex and varied. For most people with chronic pain, there is an initial injury, trauma or underlying disease. For some chronic pain can exist without any obvious cause. The pain system is a sensible and necessary part of the human body. Its
function is to protect our bodies from possible threats. Pain changes; how we move, think and behave, to allow for healing and safety. It involves all our body systems. Each individual pain system is wired in a unique way, which means that we all experience pain in different ways. There are times when the pain system also works in unusual ways. People with amputated limbs can experience “phantom pain”, despite no longer having the limb. The brain is still getting messages that the limb is damaged, and it continues to activate the pain message. There are also incidents of people being badly injured, but not the brain assesses that is safer to not feel the pain in certain situations. But later when the brain determines things are safe, pain is registered. (THISWAYUP.ORG.AU)
Chronic Pain impacts on mental wellbeing: The cycle of pain (below)
shows how inactivity, low mood, deconditioning and unhelpful thoughts all feed into each other and maintain the cycle. This is how chronic debilitating pain syndromes develop. Both a person’s mind and body react to pain and it is essential that treatment approaches address both. Self-management plays a huge part in pain management. Having chronic pain is not a simple thing, it impacts many areas of an individual’s life including their happiness. In fact, many people with chronic pain end up
feeling frustrated and angry, because no-one can tell them what is wrong, or no-one is able to fix the problem. Fear can set in and result in sleepless nights, increased worrying, which can lead to depression and anxiety. Quality of life maybe impaired, not able to work, relationships can deteriorate, and you may feel useless.
Self-Managing Chronic Pain
Effectively managing pain will look different for everyone, however there are principles that can guide everyone toward living effectively with pain. It involves learning new skills and changing bad habits, where you will need to have an open mind to learning new ways of viewing and doing things. The approach should be twofold:
Direct Pain Reduction – with skills for reducing pain directly or reducing the amount the pain bothers the person. Indirect Reduction – To assist in
restoring normal lifestyle by increasing activity levels through; • resolving conflict or grief • overcoming fears • education about pain • providing support and encouragement • learning self-management skills, and • developing a positive attitude
Education
To be able to manage the “beast” we must first learn and understand it. Arm yourself with information, ask health professions and seek support. Learn about your pain, the triggers and the things that give relief.
Lifestyle
36
| thebribieislander.com.au |
The Bribie Islander
Consider your lifestyle? Diet: What we eat, and drink contributes to our weight, and excess weight can
make pain worse. Exercise: This is a way of moving out of pain. It does not cause pain when you move with awareness. Sleep: A good diet and exercise can benefit sleep. Learning how to relax; breathing, mindfulness, and meditation are important things to learn and practice. Attitude: Need to let go of pessimist, letting go of this can be the most important part of healing. Beliefs: Need to include; more involvement in all aspects of life, more mobility, strength, fitness and ease of movement, more physical and mental relaxation. A better balance between activity and rest – pacing yourself. Improved understanding of pain, being less reactive to pain, developing more self- awareness and self-acceptance. There needs to be less worry, fear, frustration and depression. Decreased medication, visits to Doctors and other health professionals. Aim for more peace, joy, happiness, play, pleasure and purpose in life (www.pathoutofpain. com.au) The pathway out of pain is hard. It requires a strong commitment to a self-management approach and willingness to be honest about motives and behaviours that maintain pain. Self-management is about CHANGE, in habits, attitudes and beliefs. Belief in reversibility of the pain, and/or your ability to self-manage the pain Speak to your General Practitioner or other health practitioner today about self-management.
“Remember pain is universal but suffering need not be. "Wishing you all good mental wellbeing" - Veronica

TRAVEL
THE LONG WAY ROUND TO BRIBIE! with Sabine Van Graz
H
i there, here is just a quick rehash in case you have missed the latest episodes from ‘The Bribie Islander’. My short stories are all about our family, Richard my hubby, Ginger our daughter and myself, going on a 15 month trip of misadventure in a “big rig” around Australia, on a mission to find the place to call home. After nearly seven months on the road, we were finally on our way to Uluru. I expected a totally overrated brick brown rock and was worried that I would struggle to see the point. On top of that I envisaged a run down, under supplied, caravan park full of flies and heat to kill you. Well thankfully nothing of that set in … With the tail end of a cyclone the heat was replaced by amazing thunder and
Episode 16 - Uluru rain, revealing a rare sight of the rock with wild waterfalls crashing down the sides and rapidly filling up the surrounding waterholes. However this mind boggling spectacle only lasted a couple of days and the clouds soon gave way to beautiful blue autumn sky. Now the true colours of the rock started to shine and once the sun began to set … just like clockwork ‘the rock turned red’ … At that time of the day everyone at Uluru knows that you have to stop whatever you are doing, ignore your worn out body, find your cameras, hop into your car, and follow the urge you did not know you had…to join the pilgrimage to the sun set car park. Its your duty as a tourist to turn up religiously around 5.30 pm with drinks

and nibbles, while being social and enjoying the transformation of the brown rock into a unreal red glowing masterpiece of art. There is a certain bonding going on, as everyone is at this place for the same reason and heading back to camp once it gets dark in a convoy gives time for reflection and soothes the soul. It has the vibe all right and actually I think this is where the vibe came from in the first place! However even in sober day light hours, walking to the supermarket, you pass a lookout to remind you where you are, (at the rock), and that it’s not just the usual willy nilly trip to the IGA… But my favourite way to admire Uluru was our two hour bike ride around the base, with pit stops at water holes and painted caves. Camel tour
Ok …coming back down from cloud nine, even the caravan park was pretty special, with cold showers, an ice swimming pool, huge centipedes and wolf spiders at the laundry, making us feel part of the outback. Along with free activities like walking with rangers, learning about aboriginal tools, food, painting and traditional weapons, we were lucky to experience a four day festival. All this was shared with our friends we met in Coober Pedy and a gorgeous couple from Buderim, who were also travelling with a 5th wheeler and parked right next to us at the Uluru caravan park! We had no idea that we would meet up again a year and a bit later, at Bongaree, from where they were exploring fabulous Bribie Island while they were house sitting for a friend. It’s pretty special when you live on the road and catch up here and there at different destinations and caravan parks. And the kids are over the moon to see each other again, but the main feeling you get is that you reconnect with some dear old friends! ... although you might just have said good bye a week or so ago... Around that time there was a documentary on channel nine about families pulling up stumps and taking to life on the road. We however felt that there was so much more that could have been covered to paint a fuller picture of that experience. Topics like schooling, daily rituals, pets, food on the road and diets, van and car problems, needs for individual space within that compact living, time and weather changes, illness and finding doctors, missing family and friends and overall living on the road compared to holidaying… Getting the vibe when you are on a holiday is easy, however how do you get Sunset car park

the vibe if you still run a household, do schooling and maybe even work while travelling? Compared to retired Nomads…do families burn out from living on the road? (send me an email I would love to hear your experience) Last but not least, one of our favourite experiences at Uluru was the ‘Field of Lights’ installation. We decided to start this adventure with a camel ride, followed by pre dinner drinks and nibbles, while watching the sun set over Uluru. A few steps down the hill lead to a

HISTORY
REMEMBER TO SEND A POSTCARD By Barry Clark Bribie Island Historical Society
T
his was always a regular request to someone heading off on a holiday somewhere.
It is what lots of people did until about the 1970’s.
Today in an era of Text, Email, Facebook and Instagram with everyone having a mobile phone camera, the thought of buying a stamp and sending a picture Postcard is as old fashioned as Black & White TV and party line telephones. However, there is still a wonderful charm in receiving a picture Postcard
40
| thebribieislander.com.au |
from a distant place with a personal hand written message.
The very first commercially produced Post Cards were patented in America 157 years ago in 1861.
In 1861 the new Colony of Queensland had only been proclaimed just two years earlier, people were still searching for Burke & Wills lost expedition , and of course nobody lived on Bribie Island. The first Postcards to need a stamp, rather than being put in a stamped envelope, were Souvenir picture cards post cards produced in Austria around 1869. By 1873 the US Postal Department produced a pictorial “Postal Card” which was pre-stamped and became known as a “Penny Postcard”.
The Bribie Islander
The building of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 1889 was a major factor in worldwide picture postcard popularity , which was followed by other early French postcards of Nude women sent around the world, which became known as “French Postcards”.
Britain was initially slower than Europe in adopting the Postcard but after the Boer War they introduced a Picture Card with a divided back, for the address and stamp on the right, and the hand written message on the left. This provided a great opportunity for cheap and reliable messages to be sent by everyone around the world, and created great souvenirs of places to be collected. These postcards were indeed the emails of their day in the early 1900’s, when Sydney and Melbourne had four mail deliveries to every house each day.
It’s hard to believe that today.
In 1908 Australian postal records show that over 40 million post cards were mailed in Australia both nationally and internationally.
Pictorial Post cards from Australia with outback scenes, birds and wildlife were much in demand overseas. The period from 1900 to 1920 may have been the peak of worldwide postcard sending, which led to a hobby which is still active today, of collecting Postcards.
The study and collection of Postcards is termed DELTIOLOGY and was a term first coined in 1945.
A D VE RT I S I N G | 0448 448 457
The early 1930’s saw a new cartoonstyle “Saucy” postcard develop in UK with bawdy joke caricatures and smutty “Carry On” style humour.
These were mass produced at the rate of over 16 million per year and can still be seen today although the sexist humour is no longer seen as acceptable. The years of Depression in the 1930’s followed by the second World War in 1940’s had significant impact on family travel and holidays.
When things returned to normal after the War the spread of new technologies was felt around the world. Aeroplanes, Telephones, Radios, TV and Cameras were just a few of things that changed world behaviours.
The previous attraction and charm of a personalised Postcard slowly declined, and by the 1950’s was replaced with the unforgettable “Slide Night” to project holiday images of 35mm camera photo slides on the wall of a darkened room.
Who can forget those long evenings …….and the subsequent “Slide Burning Nights” of the 1970’s when each photo shown would be voted by the viewers to be either kept…….. or be thrown in the fire !!
Many of us still have boxes of old colour slides that may never see the light of day again. This is probably being repeated with today’s generation who have thousands of photos they carry on their mobile phone, which are rarely seen.
However, in today’s world, a personal and private photo of anything or anyone, anywhere, can be instantly sent to friends and family worldwide. So what?
It is certainly not the same as receiving a hand written message on a picture post card in your letter box weeks after somebody has thought about you. The Bribie Island Historical Society have a large collection of Bribie Island Postcards spanning more than 100 years.
There are two opportunities to see some of these Postcard views of Bribie, which reveal the fascinating ways in which this island has developed and changed over the years. A public presentation of “100 Years of Bribie Postcards” will be given at U3A on Friday 19th October at 1pm.
Some other postcards will be shown in a Bribie History presentation at the Bribie Library on Tuesday 30th October at 2pm.
You need to book at U3A or the Library for both of these presentations. (See Poster) If you should have any interesting old postcards to share with the Historical Society you can contact us on bribiehistoricalsociety@ gmail.com or view numerous articles and photos on our blog site http:// bribieislandhistory.blogspot.com

CELEBRITY
HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
with Helly Kemp
JOHN MILLS - NOT TO THE MANOR BORN
I
t’s 1946, when two struggling young actors, with their second daughter just being christened in a Buckinghamshire village, that the couple fall as much in love with the imposing manor house next to the chapel, as they are in love with each other. Little do they suspect that nearly 40 years later, as two of Britain’s most loved celebrities, Sir John and Lady Mills, they would own that 15th century dream house of their youth, just 25 minutes from London’s theatres. And that’s where Lady Mary excels. A mixture of furnishing styles everywhere in this grand house, not just in the spacious living room, is her special trademark. Her magic is that the furniture is not just beautiful to look at, but is terribly liveable and so comfortable. You always feel you can sprawl in any chair in any room. And it suits John down to the ground. There is a child like simplicity and frankness about this man. He is such a natural, uninhibited character. And except for the deep furrows in his face
his movements and the sprite, lithe figure belie his age. John looks like a younger man in a hurry, leading such an active life, that inactivity for him remains a dream. At the back of the two hectare garden is an isolated seat. “That is my escape seat,” laughs John. “I wrote most of my biography here. It’s too far from the house to be called to the phone.” The irrepressible veteran of more than 120 films over an acting career of 75 years, include GOODBYE MR CHIPS, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC, HOBSON’S CHOICE, ICE COLD IN ALEX, RYAN’S DAUGHTER, THE 39 STEPS, and SAHARA, just to name a few. And no matter whether it’s the musical CATS or the London Old Vic stage play OF MICE AND MEN, John’s performance is always unique and so memorable that many scenes reappear before your eyes even decades later. But it’s in 1971, while the Mills’s are still living in their Richmond Hill mansion, that I first interview John, 63, for the U.K. OBSERVER, celebrating ‘40

YEARS ABOVE THE TITLE’ of the films he has made. And out of all the celebrities I meet, interview or make friends with, John Mills CBE, remains my very favourite, because even 13 years after his death, aged 97 in 2005, the genuine warmth of his personality still encompasses me today. Radiating a warmth and enthusiasm that captures you, he proudly shows me the colourful waist coat he has been wearing for over three decades. His weight has not changed. The same applies to his riding gear. And I feel elated when John and Lady Mary invite me to come horse riding with them. John has just won three awards, including his first Oscar for the supporting role in RYAN’S DAUGHTER, portraying Michael, the mute village idiot. The screen’s hardy perennial enthuses, “It was like coming home after sports day at school. I was so excited. I couldn’t remember a single word I had said at the presentation. “And I didn’t realize what a difference it would make. Stage and film scripts keep flying in and I didn’t speak a single word in that film.” But John speaks many a word as he tells what happened just before the Oscar presentation. “Why did you have to take it off my bum,” he had asked the plastic surgeon. “Well, you’re very hirsute,” was the surgeon’s reply. “You wouldn’t like to shave your finger every morning, would you? Besides, you’re an actor and wherever I take off the skin, it will always show a scar.” The doorman from a London West End club, had slammed the cab door guillotine-fashion onto his hand, as John got into the taxi, chopping off the top half of his fourth finger.
Sir John and lady Mary in their 15th century dream house With a two-hour operation, a lengthy hospital stay, and his semi-new finger, John, arm in sling, only just made it in time to collect his Hollywood Oscar. Surrounded by a household of award winning, talented and famous females, (wife, Mary, having written 23 plays, several novels and many poems, daughters Hayley and Juliet, as well as son Jonathan, having all carved out successful acting careers for themselves,) has John ever thought it might be better if they were a little less famous, a little less talented? He shakes his head in amazement. “Oh, no! It’s so exciting. Yes, I know. A lot of people suggested that I was upset when Haley stole the show in TIGER BAY. I’ve never been able to understand that feeling of being capable of jealousy and frustration at your own kids’ success. “It’s like rearing a highly bred stallion, seeing him come out well and then getting depressed when he wins a race.” And a very cheeky ear to ear grin lights up John’s face, teasing. “Besides, there is always that sneaking feeling in the back of your head, that they might be able to keep you one day!”

REPORT
FISHING BRIBIE
By Brett Millard
O
ver the next few months, as the water temperature starts to rise, most species will really start to become more active and feed more aggressively. September is usually a great time to start heading out offshore and do some trolling. Over the last few years, I've nearly converted all my troll gear to braid and big wind on leaders. Whether on a spin combo or overhead combo I've found this combination to be absolutely deadly when trolling hardbodys, skirts or livies.Using braid when trolling means there's no stretch like monofilament, having ten or so metres of wind on gives you that little bit of extra play. There's nothing better than that initial strike of a solid wahoo, tuna, mackerel, marlin or dolphin fish on the troll. The worst part usually is the bigger the fish, the harder you have to try and pull him away from
the sharks. Sometimes in some areas, you might hook up to ten fish and possibly only land 2 to 4 fish. The other half a dozen get nailed by the sharks. They can generally show up in most areas and sometimes will make you have to move to another area. When I'm fishing real sharky areas I usually run a lot heavier tackle to really try and get the fish to the boat as quick as possible. Downrigging livies or slow trolling livies is a deadly way to target most pelagics. Sometimes when the schools are feeding deep, downrigging your baits down to the depth they are feeding will produce great results. Reefies will certainly hit a live bait slowly trolled a few meters from the structure also. Downriggers vary in costs and models, Cannon or the Scotty brand are the ones to go for.

When using hardbodys or skirts, change colours throughout the day, or run 2 or 3 different colours to see what is working on the day. The same rule pretty much works the same for any style of lure or plastics fishing. That change of colour can and usually will make a big difference. When you know what colours are working best then switch other lures to similar colours. In the passage Brett Millard with a nice bay grassy sweeties
and creeks expect the summer whiting, flathead, cod, jacks and muddies to start really firing over the next few months. The whiting and flattys are already on the chew around the surf beach and pretty much widespread throughout the entire passage.Live worms, yabbies and peeled prawns for the whiting. Pilchards, livies, plastics and hardbodys for the flattys.Theres also been some

cracker snapper coming from the passage. Although they are more prolific in the passage than most think, these fish can be quite challenging to target and catch. Using live baits, fresh baits and plastics is the best way to target them. Some great jew still coming from the bridge area, once again persistence and patience the key. Live baits, cuttlefish heads and fresh tailor or bonito fillets working well. Also, some great fish coming from the stop sign area up on the ocean beach.
There's still quite a few tailor turning up around the passage and the ocean beach, try pilchards and metal lures. The tuna have finally shown up, and there have been some pretty solid schools of fish around. The tuna move and feed super quickly and can shut down very quickly if you approach them downwind or to fast . knowing how to read the gulls and the water movement on the surface can get you to the next feeding frenzy on the surface. Depending on the size of fish, I usually carry a 20 and 30lb combo. When the fish are 10 kg or less I'll use the lighter 3-6kg rod 4000 size reel and 20lb braid 30lb leader setup. When the fish are over the 10kg mark I'll opt for a 5-8kg rod,5000 size reel,30lb braid 50lb leader setup. High speed spinning the top
Summer days with the kids
with slugs and topwater is an exciting way to target these fish, especially when that 15-20kg longtail crashes the lure metres within the boat. Usually, the first run is an absolute cracker as the hooked fish follows the school of fast moving fish. The second and third runs are usually
DON’T WAIT TILL SUMMER TO GET YOUR NEW POOL
the same, but generally, you will turn the fish away from the school and he will go deep. Then the fish generally will circle the boat quite a while before doing a few more runs, then coming to the surface. Yellowfin tuna, longtail or northern bluefin tuna and mackerel tuna are the 3
most common species caught throughout the area. The mackerel should be starting to show up soon also. So as the weather warms up get out and enjoy the great outdoors and "don't destroy what you come to enjoy " and tight lines.

A woman went to the emergency room, where she was seen by a young new doctor.
After about 3 minutes in the examination room, the doctor told her she was pregnant. She burst out of the room and ran down the corridor screaming.
An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was. After listening to her story, he calmed her down and sat her in another room.
Then, the doctor marched down the hallway to the first doctor’s room. “What the hell’s wrong with you?” he demanded. “This woman is 68 years old, she has two grown children and several grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?!!”
The new doctor continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said. . . “Does she still have the hiccups?”
Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighbouring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur’s youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if, after a year,

he still had no answer, he would be put to death. The question?...What do women really want? Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man, and to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch’s proposition to have an answer by year’s end.
He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. Many people advised him to consult the old ugly woman, for only she would have the answer. But the price would be high, as the woman was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.
The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the old woman. She agreed to answer the question, but he would have to agree to her price first.
The old ugly woman wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur’s closest friend! Young Arthur was horrified. She was

hunchbacked and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc. He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life. He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden; but Lancelot, learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur.
He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur’s life and the preservation of the Round Table. Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the woman answered Arthur’s question thus: What a woman really wants, she answered....is to be in charge of her own life.
Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the woman had uttered a great truth and that Arthur’s life would be spared. And so it was, the neighbouring monarch granted Arthur his freedom and Lancelot and the ugly woman had a wonderful wedding.
The honeymoon hour approached and Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen lay before him on the bed. The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened. The young beauty replied that since

he had been so kind to her when she appeared ugly, she would henceforth, be her horrible deformed self only half the time and the beautiful maiden the other half.
Which would he prefer? Beautiful during the day....or night?
Lancelot pondered the predicament. During the day, a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his castle, an old ugly woman? Or, would he prefer having a hideous woman during the day, but by night, a beautiful woman for him to enjoy wondrous intimate moments? What would YOU do?
What Lancelot chose is below.
BUT....make YOUR choice before you scroll down below. OKAY?
Noble Lancelot said that he would allow HER to make the choice herself.
Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time because he had respected her enough to let her be in charge of her own life. Now....what is the moral to this story?
The moral is..... If you don’t let a woman have her own way.... Things are going to get ugly...

to participate. All joined in a yummy morning tea at the bakery after the outing. Several of our members have been attending photography classes at U3A conducted by Gail Goodair on technical aspects and Adrian Lowe on photography concepts. These classes have proved beneficial to pupils who are gaining more knowledge from their participation.
The Bribie Island Photography Club meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm in the boardroom at the back of the Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive. New members are always welcome. The first two meetings are free. If you wish to come along ring Gordon at 3408 2649 or Gail at 3408 9850.

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FOR OCTOBER By Oscar Cainer (AUSTRALIA LEGAL TEXT Must carry this legal text once on the page)
Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702.
Venus turns retrograde in October and retraces the steps she's taken since early September. But that doesn't mean that we'll lose the valuable gains we've made. Matters of the heart are never easy to control – and this month brings an opportunity to realise how resilient we've become. Jupiter's final month in Scorpio calls for faith in emotional investments and encourages an adventurous attitude as opportunities surface. It's good news… both for people in established relationships, and for those who seek to find one. ARIES (March 21 - April 20)
We all need secrets. There's a reason why our hearts are buried deep within our chests. If they were permanently located on our sleeves, it would be far too easy to cause them damage carelessly. There's something you know in your heart of hearts that you're wary of sharing with even your closest confidants. Don't feel obliged to reveal more than you need to. But make sure that if you do hold back, it's for the right reasons. Don't be motivated by fear. Clear communication will make all the difference this month. October brings great potential for change. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21)
Your ruler, Venus, turns retrograde opposite your sign this month, signalling that it's time to reassess a relationship and refocus on its value. That's certainly not an indication of the need to bring things to a close. But, with a Full Moon in your sign converging with the change-maker Uranus, a shake up (of some sort) is in the air. If you've been putting up with an unsatisfactory situation, this is the time to take action. You owe it to yourself
to make your voice heard and explain your own needs. It will be easier than you think. Four minutes on the phone can make October special. Call 1900 959 005. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22)
Mike Tyson once remarked that 'everybody has a plan until they get punched'. I'm certainly not advocating violence of any description. Nor am I endorsing a former heavyweight boxing champion as a self-help guru, but, as your ruler changes signs twice in October, even if it's not 'punches' that need to be rolled with, it's going to be helpful if you can stay quick on your feet and ready to adapt to anything that life throws at you. When you have developed robust strategies, they're well worth defending. Your ideas are worthy of respect. Inspiring times await you in October. Call your NEW forecast: 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23)
A while ago I was at an event hosted by the legendary producer Joe Boyd - the man who mixed the sound on the night Bob Dylan shocked his fans by playing electric music. Joe explained how the previous night, with great jazz pioneers on the bill, the cool kids in the crowd were dreaming about becoming jazz masters. Then, when Bob picked up an electric guitar, many of them wanted to become a rock star. In October, if you re-evaluate what you think it means to be creative, your influence can reinvigorate and inspire. Be ready for the magic on offer to you in October. Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23)
Space in our cities is at a premium. That's why subterranean building is on the increase. It's easier to add an underground swimming pool to your house than to add one on top. This isn't of course, the kind of development that most of us will have to oversee with this month! But, in October, work on your emotional foundations will be valuable. If you reassess a situation from your past creatively, you'll be able to appreciate what it brought into your life and see how to invest what you've learnt into creating a sustainable happier future. October brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23)
According to the legend, an imprisoned Irish Prince was told to kiss a stone by the Celtic goddess of
beauty Clíodhna. The next day, he left Blarney Castle and pleaded his case with such eloquence that he was granted his freedom. Ever since, people have travelled to kiss the Blarney Stone. The Roman goddess of beauty is Venus, and as she slips backwards this month, your ruler Mercury, who governs communication and intelligence, is on hand to receive her wisdom. You can find a way to achieve even things that seem impossible. Don't miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for October. Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)
Just because the Sun's in Libra doesn't mean you can have everything your own way. But then, when do you ever? And actually, when do you want that? Even when things are going well for you, you're uncomfortable when you see other people still struggling. But you don't need to sacrifice your own happiness just to make life fairer. As Venus turns retrograde, it brings an opportunity to take a look at your financial wellbeing. This is a valuable process as you may well find that your finances can stretch and enable others, as well as you. Your in-depth forecast for October is ready. Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)
When Venus enters a sign, she blesses its natives with increased creativity and improved love and financial prospects. So what happens when she takes a look around and decides to turn back on her heels and move backwards? Do we feel left in the lurch? Actually, Venus' movement through your sign this month won't resemble rejection. It brings an opportunity to use her resources with subtle skill, so that you can fix some mistakes and make some amends. It's a time to heal relationships and enjoy the fruits of good company. Discover why October has so many opportunities. Call 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21)
They say 'wake up and smell the coffee' as if we all need shaking out of blissful unconsciousness. As the parent of four-year-old early riser, I'd give a lot for a few more hours sleep each morning before the arrival of my human alarm clock! This month, as Venus turns retrograde, you may feel as if you're stuck in a repetitive dream, from which you need to wake up. Mercury's activity ensures
BEST PRICE PROM ISE!
There is inspiring news in your in-depth October forecast. Call 1900 959 005.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Does social media hold the key to the future of human relationships? Networking sites were thought to be the new coffee lounges, or pubs, where friends mingle and relationships blossom. But although a real life barista might remember how you take your tea, you don't expect your financial details to be kept. In October, if an aspect of your life seems more dystopian than utopian, it might be tempting to retreat back to the safety of the past. But if you draw on Venus' creativity, there's a lot to gain from moving forward. Your in-depth forecast for the whole of October can really help. Call 1900 959 005.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) In the movie, All The Money In The World, billionaire John Paul Getty is asked how much money would make him feel comfortable. His answer is simply 'more'. More recently, a chair designer was asked which of their creations was the most comfortable. 'The next one' was the reply. It seems that we humans are hard to satisfy and always looking for improvements. In October, you may feel unsatisfied with a recent success and seek ways to make adjustments. You won't achieve perfection, but you can make valuable improvements. October is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 - March 20)
Traversing mountainous regions by car is challenging. The twisting and turning of the roads can make you gasp. With the arrival of dynamite, we found ways to tunnel under the peaks allowing us speedier passage, but robbing us of the vistas. When we climb great heights, it's only when we turn backwards that we can see how far we've come and appreciate the view. As Venus turns retrograde this month, and Mercury converges with Jupiter, look for the value in the bigger picture. It makes it worth travelling an extra mile or two. In October, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1900 959 005.

SPORT COMMUNITY
IT WAS BRIBIE’S TURN By Neil Wilson
T
he Sunshine Coast, Burnett and District Senior Women’s Golf Championship tournament is an annual event which is hosted by a different club each year and this year, the Bribie Island Golf Club was the venue for the two day event that was keenly competed by seventy-three players from clubs as far away as Tin Can Bay, Murgon, Kingaroy and Noosa. Whilst event co-ordinator Gwen Nancarrow was slightly disappointed by the number of competitors, probably due to Father’s Day being on the first day, she did say that the good weather and the excellent condition of the course were conducive to good scores. She also paid tribute to the Bribie Island Club for a well-run competition. As most within the golfing community
are probably aware, there are some very good golfers in our local clubs and the results of this event served as further proof of that with Linda Urquhart from the Bribie Island Golf Club being named as the 2018 Senior Women’s Champion, Linda Harrison from the Pacific Harbour Golf Club as B Grade Champion and Judith L’Strange of Bribie Island Golf Club as C Grade Champion.
After the presentations, Ms Nancarrow thanked all who were involved over the two days and pointed out that it was very pleasing to know that everyone had a good time.

BRIBIE ISLAND JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE
Players and Coaches NEEDED
2018 has been a very successful season for the Warrigals Club, with 4 out of our 5 eligible Teams making their way into the Finals series. Unfortunately, both our U12 Teams were eliminated early in the Finals, but our U13’s and U14’s have progressed through to the Grand Finals which will be played at Cooroy on Saturday the 1st of September. Both these Teams finished the home and away season as Minor Premiers, after losing only one game each throughout the year. The U13’s take on Caloundra, and the U14’s meet Beachmere. Our U15’s performed reasonably well this year , with a limited playing roster. At some games, they had less than 13 players, which makes winning games difficult. At times, some of the U14’s played up in grade to help out. Even the U14’s at times relied on 3 or so players from the U13’s to
make up a team. While this is the spirit we enjoy at Warrigals, it does take its toll on the players. This why for 2019, we would like to see more Bribie and surrounds boys aged from 12 to 16, join our Club. Then we can continue on the good platform laid by our current crop of Juniors. Our Coaching Staff will again be led by Tim O’Connor, who has done a great job this year. There is no doubt that his involvement has contributed to the success the Club has enjoyed this year. Apart from Players, we will also need Coaching Staff to assist Tim move forward with his plans for B.I.J.R.L. So, any Players or Coaching Staff that want to get involved in our progressive Club, email your expression of interest to: bijrl@yahoo.com

RANTS & RAVES
Dear Editor, The past weekend marked the 90th Birthday of my Dad (NORM NEILL). We had a wonderful party at the Golf club in Woorim and it was the first time for many years that Norm's immediate family were all together. Family came from as far as N.T and W.A to celebrate with him. There were Nieces and Nephews from all over the land. Norm and his wife Jess have been married for 69 years this year and have 4 children, 8 Grand children and 12 Great children.
Here is a photo of all those that came to the party. Thank you , Deb Neil Dear Editor, For the past 2 months or more there has been an increase in nuisance phone calls. These calls include unsolicited calls from various including questions about products, various salespersons, callers who hang up when you say hello, and so on and son. It is predominately late afternoon or early evening.

I wonder just how many other people are receiving these calls and why the various companies that have our telephone accounts are doing nothing to prevent these nuisance calls happening. I am seriously considering changing my account with my current phone line provider as the problem has gone on for too long. Please print this complaint and enquire what the various companies are doing to provide secure lines and eliminate callers who are are not wanted. I registered with a company to prevent just so calls, but it seems a complete waste of time? Farley Dear Editor, Thank you Queensland communities It has been fantastic to see individuals, local communities and businesses united to tackle one of the worst droughts on record. There’s one thing that unites us when there’s a crisis. Australians want to dig in and help.
We would like to thank everyone across the state who has taken time to support farmers, their families and others in our local communities in this terrible drought. Recently in some areas of Queensland, there has been a little rain, though it has hardly wet the surface. It is going to be a long, hard road ahead for farmers and our rural communities, so it’s uplifting to see so many people sticking together and lending a hand through these tough times. While droughts place emotional strains on people who rely on the land to make a living, farmers have been telling our volunteers that it means the world to them that so many Australians want to help out. Drought-affected farmers are showing remarkable strength, coping with determination in the face of huge hardships. Financial assistance is available: farmers can go to the Country Women’s Association website and fill out a simple form: www.qcwa.org.au Judy Slatyer, CEO, Australian Red Cross Joy Coulson, President, Queensland Country Women’s Association

Testimonials
s I mentioned on the phone yesterday, I am really pleased with the 2 solar roof vents that you supplied and installed for us. You put them in this morning and we went out at about 12.10 and I didn't get back until 3.40 and I was really surprised at the difference in the house, it wasn't stuffy at all and for a minute I thought I had left the small back bedroom air conditioner on and the door was open. I didn't have to charge

Russ and Kay from Ningi had a quote for $12,000 to have air-con fitted in their large acerage home, after talking with us they decided to have 4 fans fitted to their house instead of air-con, 3 of the roof fans extract the heat and moisture from their roof space and the fourth fan is ducted down into 2 ceiling grills extracting from either end of their living area. The result has been excellent and their house is no longer hot!!
