brand new year. One that is shiny and new - one that has never been used.

For many of you, 2019 will be a year full of opportunity and promise. We wish you good health and positive outcomes for all that you attempt. For others, it may be a challenging year and we trust that you can draw upon your inner strength, faith and support from family and friends to help you through any tough periods you may experience. Change is a constant in life and it is no different for publishers. This issue #78 of The Bribie Islander represents another change in the publication’s progress. After months of field research conducted with our readers, the overwhelming printing preference is for the gloss magazine style of the publication. So here it is. A brand new redesigned Bribie Islander magazine that you can look forward to every two weeks in 2019. It is packed with community information that we trust you find useful along with our regular columnists and features that you have told us you enjoy. Sadly for us, Neil Wilson who has written for the Bribie Islander over the past two-plus years has retired. To Neil, we say a heartfelt thank you for your sterling efforts and wish you well in your retirement. Readers we trust you enjoy your new look Bribie Islander magazine and as always welcome your feedback and contributions. Happy 2019!

NEW YEAR’S ON BRIBIE

T

he only thing that tops Bribie’s New Year’s Eve fireworks party is a relaxing New Year’s day on the Bribie foreshore. The Bribie

Islander magazine was out and about catching up with those who were enjoying the island’s natural advantages.

Sandy Creek residents Bruce and Maxine Jones with their beautiful dog Dolly enjoying the Bongaree foreshore for New Year’s Day. They think Bribie Island is a little piece of paradise. We agree! Lachlan, Connor, Eva and Bianca bringing in the New Year with Glow Fun and Fireworks!

COMMUNITY EVENT

ccording to Stephen Khu The Bribie Island Baptist Church is running a free program of fun activities for children and youth at Brennan Park.

“In 2019, our program will run from Monday, 7th January until Friday, 11th January, and we’ll be doing something a little different. Rather than just running a program for primary-aged children in the morning and afternoon, we have condensed that program to fit into the morning session, and then we will be adding a high-school/ youth program in the afternoon/ evening,” Stephen said. “There will

be free dinner on offer to the youth Monday through to Thursday. Both programs will then come to a grand conclusion on the Friday evening with the band, the Smashing Bumpkins, joining us for

a bush dance, and there’ll be food for sale, a jumping castle, and other fun to be had. The whole community is invited to come and join us,” he said.

Your super may be your financial salvation so take every opportunity to top it up. MONEY TALK Contributions limit is $100,000 or $300,000 over a three-year period. You can contribute $300,000 at the start of a threeyear period using what is known as the “bring forward” rule.

that you can make, concessional and non-concessional. Concessional contributions are, as the name implies, pre-tax contributions usually made by your employer, you if you are selfemployed and/or through salary sacrifice. The “concession” you receive for such contributions is a 15% tax charge instead of your marginal tax rate that you would pay if you take the earnings in cash. The amount you can contribute pre-tax is currently capped at $25,000 per year and penalties apply if you exceed the cap. Non-Concessional contributions can be made from after tax income or savings and have more generous contribution ceilings. If you are under age 65 and you have less than $1.6m in super, the annual Non Concessional

In July 2019 the Government provided another opportunity to top up your super if you are over 65 and decide to downsize to a smaller property. You can contribute up to $300,000 ($300,000 each for a couple) from the proceeds of selling your home. To be eligible to make a downsizer contribution to super the amount you are contributing must be from the proceeds of selling your home where the contract of sale is exchanged on or after 1 July 2018. You or your spouse must have owned your home for 10 years or more prior to the sale. Your home

must be in Australia and not a caravan, houseboat or other mobile home. and you must not have previously made a downsizer contribution to your super from the sale of another home. You must make your downsizer contribution within 90 days of receiving the proceeds of sale, which is usually at the date of settlement. The downsizer contribution does not count towards your contributions cap and you do not have to purchase another property to qualify. If you are contemplating selling your home and making a contribution to your super from the sale proceeds it is important to consider the impact on any Centrelink benefits that you receive. Whereas the money tied up in your permanent place of living does not count towards the Centrelink assets

test, downsizer money transferred to super will be treated as an asset, which will reduce your benefits if the value of your assets exceeds the allowable maximum. As always, inform yourself before making any financial decisions. Check out moneysmart.gov.au

REGULAR FEATURE from being in a busy place where every day you saw your friends and interacted with a variety of personalities to be a total homebody. It was good for many reasons: learnt more about myself, spent time with Mum, developed life skills. But eventually my mood began to change and I felt

FAMILY

Everyone’s social capacity is different. Some people like to spend a lot of time by themselves, focusing on a hobby or working.

Others like to socialize every day in a variety of ways. And some like a nice balance in between. Of course, that can change over time depending on long moods.

I always like to use leaving school as a landmark in my history because a lot of things changed around that time. I went

lonely for more colour in life. It’s like I had a canvas with only but a sketch of life on it and now it was time to add all the beauty and flamboyance. This last year has been the beginning of the painting. Working in the hospitality field has seen me meet people from all over the world and it makes me so happy! I get to hear about where they come from and their cultures and why they come to this part of the world. They add colour to my life. But it’s not just the patrons, it’s the staff too! I work for a big company which has many employees and we’re all family really. I have made many friends whom I love and I’m excited to walk life day-by-day with them. It

makes me sad to think one day I might not see these people on a daily basis. But changing paths is part of what makes life so diverse and interesting. And sometimes paths change temporarily only to cross once again further down the track in a new way! How exciting! But the thing is, I think I’m becoming addicted. Once upon a time, I was the ‘balanced’, socialite who loved her friend time but then thoroughly enjoyed retreating to my space at home to recollect and reflect and reorganize. Now, it’s like, “What’s happening next?” “Whom am I meeting next?” “What adventure next!” I used to enjoy cleaning, now I’m like, “stuff the dishes, where’s the fun at?” I don’t really feel bad, maybe like a tad guilty when things don’t get done, but I feel it’s an important stage in maturation. Or at least, I’ll use that excuse… Overall what I’m discovering is that I honestly love people. You’re all so colourful and beautiful and diverse. You make me a better person by knowing you. This new year, make it important that you expand your friendship circle to people unusual to your clique. It could be race, gender, age. Especially I feel age. And watch your life bloom in unexpected ways. Nikita.

reetings and a happy New Year. Let’s make a New Year’s resolution and try some of the different white wine and red wine grape varieties out there and give Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz a rest for a while, you never know you could be pleasantly surprised and fall in love with something new. I have listed some of these varieties that have appeared on our shelves and have given some ideas on what to drink them with. Due to climate change many of our traditional varieties are being put under pressure so the winemakers are looking for more resilient varieties and with the climate of Australia we can plant many of these ‘old world’ grape varieties, the vines not only grow very well but the flavours can be so different to their European counterparts but in a nice way. 18

Viognier

This strictly isn’t a new variety, it has been out there for around twenty odd years but didn’t achieve the following it probably deserves, which could be because as the grape variety was being introduced so was Sauvignon Blanc and it can be confusing with its spelling and many consumers couldn’t pronounce the name, however now is the time to discover a wine with a wonderful sensory experience full of vast nuances of flavour. Yalumba have persevered with the variety since it caught their eye in the early 1970’s when their chief viticulturist visited the Rhone Valley in France and was captivated by the elusive, luscious and complex characters of this grape variety. Although many vineyards have Viognier planted a lot of it is actually blended with Shiraz and just 5% can soften out a full

However Yalumba produce six different wines with the Viognier grape, The Eden Valley Viognier, an Organic Viognier, The ‘Y’ series Viognier, The Virgilius Viognier, The FSW8B Botrytis Viognier (a dessert wine that also goes very well with blue cheese) and The Hand Picked Shiraz Viognier. When we had The Yalumba winemaker visit our wine club in Perth and introduce one of these Viognier wines the response was fantastic and the orders plentiful, enjoy with seafood, shellfish, chicken, veal, pork or a lightly spicy Asian dish.

Fiano There are expectations this could be the next big thing in white wines but that remains to be seen, I have heard this many times before but this wine is a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. The grape variety hails from the warmer

By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au Italian coastal regions including Campania and the island of Sicily where it was almost forgotten by local winegrowers due to its low yields. Here in Australia it has found a home all around the country but especially in McLaren Vale where the close proximity to the ocean suits the grape variety. Coriole who have a long history with Italian varieties planted the variety in 2005, also Angove, Geoff Hardy, Oliver’s Tarringa Vineyard, Serafino, Bremerton, Kangarilla Road and here in Queensland Ballandean Estate in The Granite Belt. Because the wine is quite acidic enjoy the wine with frito miso, fried or baked seafood, vegetables, or pasta with a creamy sauce.

Gruner Vetliner. An Austrian grape variety which is now finding favour in Australia especially wine from the

WINELANDER Adelaide Hills in South Australia where the wine combines freshness, minerality and good length of fruit character. Wineries that produce the wine include Nepenthe, Hahndorf, Tomich, O’Leary Walker and Longview. Enjoy this wine with all manner of Asian dishes from Chinese sweet and sour pork to Vietnamese spring rolls and Japanese tempura. Other dishes include salads with asparagus and artichokes, salty charcuterie, Bratwurst and other smoked or cured meats. Let’s not forget a few new red varieties that have suddenly emerged especially from grape varieties that make some of the finest wines from around the world.

Tempranillo Spain’s finest grape variety has a love of heat

and can partner other Australian grape varieties such as Grenache and there are now over 200 winegrowers producing Temranillo in all wine producing regions. Australian Tempranillo tends to make powerful wines with blackberry and spice overtones which despite being a big wine, retains a balanced acidity. A good alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz try one from Nepenthe, Tim Adams, Brown Brothers, All Saints, Amadio, Barossa Valley Estates (BVE), Chapel Hill, Mr Riggs, Yalumba or from Golden Grove from the the Granite Belt Queensland. As with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz this variety can handle any red meat or mature cheese and could be a talking point around the BBQ this summer.

Nebbiolo Why this breath taking grape variety has taken so long to arrive on our shores is any bodies business and it was only a matter of time before this was rectified. Success has already come from The Mornington peninsular, The Yarra Valley, The Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and The Clare Valley. Look for Blue Pyrenees, Pizzini (King Valley winery that has pioneered Italian varieties for years), Coriole and S.C. Pannel. (An Australian winemaker of the year) Another wine to try instead of a Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz, Nebbiolo is usually dark ruby red with cherry like characters and will accompany any red meat course.

that some of these are worth investigating over the next few months and don’t forget if you need any advice or help drop me a line. Cheers, Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au

As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold wine washed away leaving only the sea taste and succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with a crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.” Ernest Hemmingway My thoughts exactly!

Perhaps next time we will continue to look at other new varieties but I suggest

One such freebee was local artist Geoff Ginn’s Recycled Art class. Attendees, including myself, learnt how to put together works of art using Geoff’s boxes of scraps and junk most of us would lose no time sending to the tip or putting in the firewood pile. The wood from one of his boxes, Geoff told us, was washed up on the beach. The six hours on Monday and Thursday afternoons found us screwing, gluing, spraying, painting, matching, mismatching, and doing an awful lot of thinking our masterpieces through with Geoff’s skilled assistance and sage advice. Geoff Ginn was creating from rubbish steampunk guitars, towers, planes, cranes and automobiles before he even knew what steampunking was. In addition to the Recycled Art workshop, I enjoyed Craig Rohse’s Rembrandt Portrait Photography Workshop on Monday morning. You may know Craig as our 2018 Winner of the Matthew Flinders Art Prize. In the class, he taught us how to take a photo using special lighting, props, and positioning which

will, with Craig’s remarkable Photoshopping, morph into a dark, moody Rembrandt-like portrait. Be sure to catch Craig in 2019 when he will be The Arts Centre’s August Artist of the Month. Meanwhile, he can be found at his recently launched ‘Little Gallery Photography’ Studio in Deception Bay. Although BICAS anniversary week is now over, the regular weekly and new workshops and Working Together Groups will resume being held in the studios at BICAC at 191 Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach. FABULOUS FUNDING BOOST FOR THE ROTARY CLUB OF BRIBIE ISLAND By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary

T

he Rotary Club of Bribie Island will receive a $5,000 boost after successfully securing community grant funding from Moreton Bay Regional Council. The money will be used to continue restoration and planting in the area around Rotary Park at Woorim. This project - “Make a Difference Plant a Tree” - commenced in August 2017. However the restoration work around Rotary Park has been ongoing for many years. Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said a number of local organisations had been successful in the latest round of community grants funding. Mayor Sutherland said “Council’s community grants support local community, youth, senior citizen, sporting and cultural events and activities. Funding is available for initiatives that respond to community issues, enhance wellbeing and safety and encourage participation and partnerships. They’re a great way for council to support the community organisations, activities, events and initiatives that matter to our residents.” 22

www.thebribieislander.com.au

Bribie Rotary President John Oxenford thanked Moreton Bay Regional Council for their support. John said “the grant will be used for weed clearing and further planting in the area between Rotary Park and the sand dunes. We will plant tube stock which will stabilise the dunes.” The need for more trees and vegetation on Bribie is clear, and all who live on the Island, and love it, will appreciate such projects. We will be working in conjunction with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) who have also received a grant from Moreton Bay Regional

Like the Friendship Benches, mentioned in previous articles, that Rotary supplied to Bribie schools, this is another truly local project which will benefit both the Island and the people who live and visit here. The plants will be supplied by Wallum Action Group, the community nursery on Bribie Island and CREEC, the community nursery in Caboolture. As well as working with CVA, the Bribie Island Protection Association (BIEPA) will also assist. In addition, the students from our EarlyAct program at Bribie Island State School will provide their valuable assistance with the planting. We propose to undertake the planting at the end of March 2019. Anyone in the community that wants to help in the project can do so by contacting me on 0409 244 005. KINDNESS MATTERS

MENTAL HEALTH

By Veronica Mercer, Mental Health Accredited Social Worker

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness…” Dalai Lama

A

s I’ve gotten older and gained a bit more life experience and wisdom, I’ve discovered that kindness comes in many forms and they don’t always look “kind.” I’ve also discovered what counts as “right” and “good” to one person does not always count to everyone. Science has now shown that devoting resources to others, rather than having more and more for yourself, brings about a lasting sense of well-being. Kindness has been found to be the most important predictor of satisfaction and stability a marriage. Many Universities; including Harvard; are now emphasizing kindness on their applications for admission (Psychology Today). Kindness is not new. It’s old. Aristotle said: “It is the characteristic of the magnanimous man to ask no favour but to be ready to do kindness to others.” Kindness is mankind’s “greatest delight,” said Roman philosopheremperor Marcus Aurelius. Being “kind” is not the same as being “nice” 1. Being kind does not always look like being ‘nice.’ 2. Having a ‘pleasant disposition’ does not mean always making other people happy. 3. Sometimes kindness means disappointing other people, even making them angry. 32

The way I see the difference between being kind and being nice is this: • “Kindness” is based on your own ethics, your own values, and your own beliefs. • “Niceness” is based on how other people see you. Sometimes kindness means having to say: “No.” We see this in instances where there needs to be, a line between kindness and enabling. An example: Someone keeps asking you for money and they then spend it on drugs, and alcohol or some other negative behaviour. In this instance saying “No” maybe safer as well as kinder, and you could look for better ways to support them. It is important for us to remember that everyone gets to make their own choices; this is what being an adult is about and it is the skill we all need to learn in order to be able to function within the parameters of society. Kindness starts with yourself Kindness starts at home, with you. Being kind is about living with integrity, knowing what your principles and important “ethical characteristics” are, and what right and wrong means in your life. It is about treating yourself as you would anyone else you care about. We usually talk about and hear about kindness in relation other people, but kindness towards yourself is just as important.

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

I believe that how you treat and talk to yourself becomes the foundation from which you approach your other relationships. Therefore, kindness is not just about how you treat other people, it’s about extending the same intentions and behaviours to our yourself too. Kindness is rooted in empathy and acceptance Definition: Empathy is the ability to understand someone else’s situation, experience, feelings, and behaviours. Kindness is finding compassion and understanding for where the other person is in their life and their journey while maintaining your own boundaries and respecting your own needs. There are different ways to practice kindness. One way to be kind is to open your eyes and be active when you see people in need. Do you notice when people could use a helping hand? A sense of community is created when people are kind to those who need help. Kindness and Humans Kindness is fundamental to the human existence. We are thrust into the world as newborns and enriched with the kindness of our parents’ nurturing for the ensuing years. Therefore, kindness is sewn into the framework of our DNA. We are literally wired for kindness. Kindness is not something that demands hard work. It originates from the simple act of doing no harm to others. It involves; • Judging less, however compelled you might be to do so because the ego is quick to judge when it is victimised and hurt, so it retaliates in revenge.

• Kindness, however, bites its tongue. It does not seek to be right but to preserve peace of mind. You gain little by giving someone a piece of your mind, other than inciting conflict and separation (randomactsofkindness. org). Kindness has many benefits including; • Increased happiness, • a healthy heart, • energy levels, • it slows down the aging process, • improves relationships and connections, which indirectly boosts your health, • kindness broadens your life’s frame of reference and is a symbol of respect to value the receiver, and • it influences the giver more than the receiver and has correlations with enhanced mental, emotional and physical well-being. Kindness decreases; pain, stress, anxiety, depression and blood pressure. People believe kindness is particular to those of religious faith because of their moral vows. Kindness does not require you to be of religious faith or even spiritual. Demonstrations of kindness are observed in man’s best friend, the dog. Cats also show kindness and are treasured for their emotional connection. Kindness is a wonderful, beautiful and complex quality, try some on today… Wishing you all good mental well-being and kindness - Veronica. “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” —  Desmond Tutu

Care

Must Love Dogs! Those who actively dislike dogs are very much in the minority in Australia, yet there are some people who have misunderstandings about our furry friends. Generally, pet dogs are not responsible for the majority of attacks on native wildlife. 34

Relaxing on Holidays!

Responsible handling and ownership can go a long way to prevent the small number of incidents between owned dogs and wildlife. For instance, if one person is walking many dogs at once, the dogs should be let off-lead in turns so that no more than two dogs are off-lead at any time, to prevent packing behaviour. Sadly, there have been spates of baitings in the past locally, affecting dogs and killing native birds. Dog baiting episodes are sometimes followed by house break- ins, so always remain vigilant.

Summer FUN around the Pool!

SENIOR DOGS – Part four By Yvonne Bishop

There are things we can do to help our dogs live longer and healthier. First is keep up to date with vaccinations, worming, heartworm, tick and flea control. As they age it may pay to visit the vet twice a year for a checkup so if any health issues appear you can nail it in the early days. For instance, cancer is the most curable of all chronic conditions that affect our dogs. Fifty percent of dogs over 10 years old may develop some form of cancer. If your male or female dog is not desexed

now may be a good time to cut some of the risks of cancers. Another common problem in senior dogs is blindness caused by cataracts or glaucoma. We can help our four-legged friends by providing a good nutritional diet. Supplements may be helpful such as antioxidants – Omega 3 for overall good health. Exercise is crucial for dogs to maintain good health. It is better to go for slow, short walks frequently than one long walk and swimming is also great. Happy training

Yvonne.

NATURE

GREAT KNOT (CALIDRIS TENUIROSTRIS)

E

very year around September and October there is a huge migration of waders from the northern hemisphere to Australian coastal areas. One such species that makes the 11 000 km journey from the tundra regions of Siberia to our shores is the critically endangered Great Knot. They fly in large flocks down the Asia-Australian Flyway stopping on the way to refuel and rest a while along the coasts of China, Korea and other East Asian countries. This journey takes about two weeks and they lose about 70% of their body weight on the way. All is fine as long as there is adequate food and roosting spots for the exhausted birds to regain their strength but because of development along these shores their journey is becoming increasingly more difficult. One such obstruction was a 33km seawall built in South Korea in 2006. This was the sight of one of the world’s most important feeding grounds but the wall caused the area to become an unproductive desert with no food for the birds. 90 000 Great Knots were lost in that year alone. That was about a quarter of the world population. In 2017 – 2018 several environment organizations and volunteers banded together to make a food drop in an area where the tiny clams, one of their most important food sources, once in abundance are no longer to be found. 114 tonnes of commercially grown clams were purchased and Great Knot Resting with Bar-tailed Godwits.

By Marj Webber dropped at high tide over the area. When the tide went out the birds were able to feed on the clams and thus restore some of their strength needed to continue their journey. When the 37 different migratory species visit Australia they spend several months resting and feeding and gaining weight for their long journey back to Siberia to breed. It is important that they are left to rest as if they are disturbed too often by passing boats, dogs or people they may not gain sufficient weight to finish their journey. Just think, this ordinary, medium-sized white, grey and black streaked bird flies 22 000 km every year. The Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage area is one of the worlds most important feeding and resting places. Every year thousands of migratory birds converge on the area to spend the summer. On Bribie Island a good place to view these birds is at high tide at the Banksia Beach Hide and the beach at Buckley’s Hole. Toorbul also has a manmade roost where thousands of waders converge to rest. Great Knots are usually in the company of the vulnerable Bar-tailed Godwits and the critically endangered Eastern Curlews. We are so lucky to still have such birds visiting our beaches and mud flats. These wonderful birds have some dire threats to their existence such as development of our shorelines, climate change,

Above: Great Knot Resting at Toorbul Inset: Vulnerable Bar-tailed Godwits and Critically Endangered Eastern Curlew

severe weather and recreational activities such as boating and jet skis disturbing their rest. In 1999 the Great Knot’s conservation status was listed as “not threatened” and in 2018 their listing had changed to “critically endangered”. A threat close to home is the Toondah Harbour development in Cleveland if it goes ahead. The proposed development takes up 67 ha much of which is part of the Ramsar proclaimed, internationally protected wetlands. These wetlands harbour protected species and Ramsar is designed to keep them safe. The Ramsar Convention was established in 1971 to protect important wetlands around the world. 268 countries signed the agreement including Australia. The Toondah area has been protected by this agreement since 1993 so I am wondering how part of this important sight can be caught up in a development plan. Two critically endangered and one vulnerable bird plus many other species use this area to feed and rest not to mention the turtles, dugong and fish which rely on the seagrass in the water for their livelihood. It would be a catastrophic state of affairs for us and future generations if we do so much damage to our environment that the Great Knot and other migratory birds can no longer make it our shores.

Bedford home, when he is afflicted with dementia. But let’s go back some 50 years ago when I first meet the demure girl with the gorgeous brown eyes and high cheek bones. And as beautiful as Susan is, as charming and as funny, she exudes some aura of sadness, not visible to the general public. Maybe I can feel it straight off, as we seem to bond the first time we meet and become friends. Susan is the kindest and sweetest person I have ever met. She phones me in a great hurry one

day, asking me to lend her little son, Christopher (knee high to a grass hopper), my son’s goggles and flippers, as they are rushing off to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean, and she hasn’t got time to buy a set. The two boys are about the same age, so the gear fits perfectly. And as we live not far from each other, I deliver the requested goods immediately. Well, lo and behold! I can’t believe it! Just a few weeks later, a gigantic carton arrives with the postman. Susan is not just returning the goggles and flippers, but the box is filled to the brim with new toys for my son.

DO YOU WANT A COOLER HOME THIS SUMMER?

I have a bunch of Susan’s letters as thick as a sandwich, which I treasure. So I have decided not to give you a short celebrity interview today, but instead let you read some of them. They show you her pride in the development of her son, Chris, over the decades; her kindness; her appreciation; her caring; her sometimes dyslexic choice between hand writing and the printed word; and above all what a wonderful person and friend she is.

In the Projected Images categories Mono was taken out by John Cupper with his magical shot “On Painted Pond” which was of a Maned Wood Duck swimming in the water at the Roma Street Parklands. Gabby Shaw won the Open Colour with a clever time exposure shot titled “Chapel Lane”. This great shot was also awarded “Photo of the Month” by our visiting judge. Stan Bowles travelled from Redcliffe with an understudy judge, Darrel from Tin Can Bay who tried his hand at critiquing some of the images. Stan gave us lengthy and entertaining critiques on the rest. Our competition for the year was completed and John Cupper was the

winner pipping Marj Webber by just two points. Alain Chardon was third with Richard Speer in fourth place. Certificates were presented to each of the placegetters at our Xmas break-up lunch in the lovely home of Gordon and Val Bentzen. It was a great get together with an abundance of food, beverages and good company. Each year some of our members attend Camp Quality to photograph kids with cancer. These photographs are given to The Lions Club which distributes them to the children as mementos of their special day. Some really lovely shots were taken by John Cupper, Gordon Bentzen, Gabby Shaw and Alain Chardon. Our first meeting for 2019 will be held on 28th January at the Arts Centre John Cupper, ‘On Painted Pond’.

TRAVEL

THE LONG WAY ROUND TO BRIBIE! Episode 22 - Leaving Darwin with Sabine Van Graz

H

i there, my short stories are all about our family, Richard my hubby, Ginger our daughter and myself, going on a 15 month trip of misadventure in a “big rig” around Australia, on a mission to find the place to call home... After five glorious and relaxing weeks in Darwin, we were sad to leave but excited to get back on the road again. Heading South, we returned for a pit stop at Mataranka, once again immersing ourselves in the warm Springs and the life from the ‘We of the Never Never’. This was our current night time read, causing our imagination to go walkabout, and leaving us eager to have another good look at Jeannie Gunn’s original homestead. The small basic hut without water and electricity was a 40

total contrast to our next destination of Mount Isa, which as a huge mining town was lit up like a Christmas tree all year round. By now our rig was at bursting point from storing all our rock and shell collections, however that did not stop us having a ‘day out on town,’ acquiring a set of colourful bookshelves for Ginger, with no plan of where to put them in the rig... To be honest we could not wait to leave this part of civilization behind and return to our outback mode. With a couple of

options to get you out of town, we decided to take a more scenic route via Boulia to get to Winton. Little did we know that this road was narrower than any drive-way, and at best could be called a single lane road! It also came with its own road rules, namely …that the road trains have right of way and do not need to slow down for anyone or anything. Wings would have been handy, but nothing was big enough to wizz us out of the way when the huge dust cloud

Climbing Cawnpore lookout

was approaching! Veering into the bushes with Dodge, caravan and all was our only option! Not sure how we made it unscathed, however for the next 300 km we obeyed the rule of large comes first… and fogged in anything smaller than us. Now you are thinking, what mongrels! Honestly one could not help but bury any by passers with a dust cloud, because that was all there was… lots of dust. North Gregory Hotel

And the dusty Dodge was holding up through all those humps and bumps, however not without a couple of flashing warning lights going off! One constantly urging us to stop immediately as we were meant to have a ‘flat tire’! We obediently stopped and investigated multiple times, but could not find the flat tire… Ginger realizing our serious situation of possibly being stranded once again in no-mans land, told us to think outside the square, and to consider that may be we left the flat one behind … No wiser, we pushed on with our phantom flat tire and instead jumped on the brakes for a couple of wild camels and an emu crossing the road with its chicks. With all that excitement we missed our powered caravan site at Boulia, and instead ended up

right next to the gents toilet door, mistaking those mosquito zappers for the infamous Ming Ming lights during the night. Still on the way to the Queensland outback town of Winton, we came across a spectacular lookout called Cawnpore, reaching above the flat landscape like a red desert cupcake framed by the deep blue sky. To top it off we found a pub in the middle of nowhere, called the Middleton Hotel, which made history in 1862 when the first white men, John McKinlay and his Burke and Wills search party entered the area. I couldn’t resist a Baileys on ice, while studying the old photos and admiring the historic remnants of the ‘town’, which by now had shrunk to a population of three.

Glassed out days and great fishing

In comparison, Winton was a thriving town with multiple historical pubs, one of them being

performed in 1895. There was even a hairdressing salon called ‘Pinky’, made famous through the ABC show ‘Backroads’. Needless to say my hair was pink and perfect after my visit! But first we had to go on a search through the pubs to find the booking officer for the Tattersalls Hotel caravan park. As usual we had to pace out our spot, when helping Bob appeared from the neighbouring motorhome. He and his wife Noelene soon became our Winton

travelling buddies, and we decided to all go together in the Dodge to the dinosaur museum. This was especially exciting for Ginger as she could talk to her hearts content with our new friends about her favourite books. Ginger announced that she loves all sort of books except Mummy books, because they are sooo boring and send her to sleep…. always talking about how to be happy… And happy I was when this informative car trip ended, and we arrived at the most impressive Winton dinosaur

museum. It was a great combination of in-house information with a bones workshop, where experts and volunteers alike made bones emerge from dirt and rocks. The outdoor activities were just as exiting with a short trip on the shuttle bus to a designated area of dinosaur canyons and board walks, which made me feel like I was walking next to those ancient polished giants! By the end of our stay in Winton I was also in need of some polishing up, and was looking for a place to get my eyebrows waxed. Ginger was surprised

and remarked that she thought I wanted to have more hair not less? Leading to a deep and meaningful conversation of how one could implant their ‘plentiful eyebrow hair’ onto the top of ones head… Before I leave you with that hairy thought… I have to tell you that we have some very exciting news! Can you guess it? Send me an email! Although this is the end of this episode, I hope you can join me in the next edition of ‘The Bribie Islander’, when we try to strike it rich fossicking for gem stones.

CHARITY

BUSY FINGERS T

he staff and volunteers of Busy Fingers sincerely hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As the New Year begins so does the shop, with us re-opening this Monday 7th January at 8.30, the staff have had a well earned two week break and hopefully are ready to start back at work. Before we closed we had a raffle and as promised I have the numbers that won 1st Prize Lawn Mower and Shopping Gift Card Black B92, Matt 2nd Prize Gifts/Hamper and Shopping Gift Card Black F48, Vikki 3rd Prize Gifts/Hamper and Shopping Gift Card Orange E01, Colin 4th Prize Gifts/Hamper and Shopping Gift Card Black B80, Han We congratulate all the winners and thank all our supporters who participated.

The week before Christmas we had a few days of a shop wide sale of 50% off and we managed to please many shoppers who thought it was a great idea and found many bargains on the way. This will also allow us to fill the shelves with a lot of new stock that is currently sitting in the store room, making more room for any new donations. Our manager Sonia has reorganised the shop once again, I think she is beginning to like making changes, but all in a good cause, she is hoping to keep the shop looking open and fresh. She has also ordered a few more shelves to accommodate more stocks for display. There will be bargain days again this year and once we know what donations are arriving we will put the bargain items on the noticeboard as you come into the front door. Sonia has also advised me that she will be having $5 baskets of clothes during the last week of the month.

DONATIONS GIVEN IN DECEMBER During our final committee meeting of the year we were asked for several items and they included airconditioning in the male and female bunk houses of the Surf Lifesaving Club. Many use these bunk houses including visiting nippers on camps as well as the life guards, the design of the rooms include small windows that give little airflow and ventilation so air-conditioning will improve the situation greatly. We were also able to supply the Bribie Island primary school with volunteer T-shirts and also some new ipads to be used to help students with disabilities and learning difficulties to access the curriculum. The old ipads they are using cannot access the current learning apps the school uses. We continue to support the VMR with their monthly fuel needs and also the Bribie Hospice with the Palliative Care suite at the Bribie Island Retirement Village. Busy Fingers would not be able to continue to support the island residents both young and mature without

our customers continually coming to shop and also the wonderful residents who donate their preloved treasures. We thank you all.

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance please let us know. We try to assist all non for profit associations and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@bigpond.com if you wish to have a presentation or if you wish to apply for a grant of assistance. When applying for assistance please include a contact name and phone number and also a current equipment quote, tell us a bit about your association/ club and membership and why you need the equipment you are requesting. Please be aware we only deal with island associations and groups not individuals. In closing we would like to thank Mavis Howard for her hard work in supplying so many lucky dip bags for the children during the year, these sell quickly and give so much enjoyment to the kids. Also we must thank Richard and the gang at The Bribie Islander for our advertising and also allowing us to put an article in each month.

Hope to see you in the shop soon.

Dinner was served a little late, which was great for bar takings, and “added to the ambiance” of the wonderful evening.

FISHING W

By Vin Donovan

ouldn’t mind going back to the good old days when you could drive through most forestry, beaches or national parks around southeast Queensland without having to pay for permits or fees. Most camping or fishing spots were relatively quiet, and usually, you would be by yourself or have little to no traffic or people around. Camping at Fraser Island, Moreton Island, Double Island point or Bribie Island on the holidays was never

that busy. Camping was a great way to escape for a week or two and enjoy the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. Unfortunately, nowadays with the number of people camping and fishing, the costs of permits and fees, the number of restrictions being introduced and numerous other factors it’s no wonder why the good old days were so bloody good. Finding those beautiful quiet camping and fishing spots nowadays are

Usually, nowadays we try and get away midweek, off-peak or find some of those quiet hidden spots that haven’t been discovered yet. Having a boat is great, as it gets you away from the crowds and usually, you can find somewhere nice and quiet to set up camp. So yet again another year has gone by and the holiday period is in full swing. The fishing in the passage at present has been great with a wide variety of species being taken. Over the Christmas break try to fish early afternoon through to early morning as the passage gets SUN 6 Jan 3:02 am 0.38m 9:52 am 2.45m 4:15 pm 0.6m 9:53 pm 1.83m

pretty hectic during the day with boats, jet skis, and traffic. The duskys have been widespread throughout with some great size fish getting caught and also good numbers around. Plastics, hardbodys, and pillies the best bet. The summer whiting also has been around in good numbers and size. Live worms for the whiting. The jacks and cod also have really started to fire up with the warmer weather. Plastics, hardbodys and live baits the go. Look for snaggy, rocky deep sections of the river with plenty of cover and shade. Some WED 9 Jan 4:41 am 0.45m 11:32 am 2.37m 5:52 pm 0.63m 11:38 pm 1.81m

REGULAR FEATURE Nice duskys and cod from the passage

nice sweetlip, moses perch, parrot and squire coming from the coffee rock patches and ledges throughout the passage. It’s quite surprising how many patches of reefy rubbly patches are actually in the passage. There have been some great mixed reefies getting caught on the shallows around Cape Moreton and the Caloundra 2 to 12-mile areas. Sweetlip, cod, moses, perch, Maori cod, squire, parrot, nanagui and the odd legal red emperor or coral trout being caught. We generally floatline the shallows with 2030lb braid and 40-50lb

fluorocarbon leaders.610kg spin sticks and 5000 size reels. On the pelagic scene, there has been some nice wahoo, Spanish mackerel, dolphin fish and marlin being caught off the cape. In the bay, there have been some nice spotty and school mackerel around. There’s also been some big longtail tuna and cobia working around the schools also. Cod, snapper, sweetlip, jacks and big parrot getting caught in the bay. So hope you guys had a great Christmas and new years break. Tight lines and remember “don’t destroy what you came to enjoy “

OUR COMMUNITY

A TALE OF TWO TRADIES and paid a deposit via EFT. On Wednesday 12 our “builder” rocked up around 11 am to start the job.

Jonathon Huston our “Guardian Angel”

T

he following supplied article from John Boland offers a warning to our readers when sourcing their tradespeople from social media to adhere to the old adage Caveat emptor - “Let the buyer beware” and on a positive note that there are some really decent people in our community. Here’s John’s tale in his own words.... Recently we had to engage a tradesman to replace the dividing fence between the neighbour and us as it had past it used by date. (Some could say a bit like me). Taking responsibility to project manage I sought quotes through

a trades site on the Internet for fencers. Two trades persons made contact and times were set for a quotation. Neither turned up so I commented on Facebook of my disappointment. As a result, there were three responses within a short time frame and times were set for quotations. The first guy was way over the mark as I had a fair idea of costs as I replaced fencing last year. The second person arrived with his wife and three kids sleeping in the car. Being parents of four and grandparents to seven were decided to go with the young guy as it was just before Christmas

By 4 pm I’d paid him the remainder of the bill in cash not taking too much notice workmanship (or lack of). After he left I discovered that not only was it not on the boundary line but was as crooked as a seaman’s leg, not bedded, palings at all angles and generally shoddy work. (There are other major issues that can’t be mentioned however they are under police investigation). He decamped in such a hurry he even left his wheelbarrow behind. After running the issue on Facebook showing the “mess” left behind my faith in mankind has been restored. Jonathon Huston (QBCC License 15022051, ABN 20419979871) lobbed on our front door and informed that he would replace the fence the next day at cost. I don’t believe in “Fairy Godmothers” but my “Guardian Angel” is a bloody good bloke. If there were more people like Jonathan Huston in the world it would be a much better place. To my unregistered builder, I look forward to our date at QCAT. My lesson from this is to ensure that any tradesperson you engage is registered with the appropriate authorities and has an ABN as a business.

(AUSTRALIA LEGAL TEXT

Customer care: 1300 366 702. 2019 arrives with spring in its step. On the heels of the partial Solar Eclipse, Uranus, the last planet still moving backwards, changes direction, and imbues the sky with real momentum. Several fascinating celestial dramas treat us to their opening act in January, including the first of Jupiter and Neptune’s dynamic squares, which stoke the fires of faith in the furnaces of our imagination. Yet there’s no need to fear being lost in a fantasy world. Saturn’s grounding influence enables us to take advantage of the wealth of cosmic gifts.

AQUARIUS (January 21 February 19)

My young son was shocked when he found out my age. ‘So, next year you’ll be a million-thousand and you’ll explode!’ he gasped. As far as predictions go, it looks as if there’s work to do before he follows me into the family business! But with the arrival of a Supermoon Eclipse as we approach your birthday, things are primed and ready to go off! There’s no need to worry about spontaneous combustion, though. As Uranus begins to move in tandem with the rest of the cosmos, it launches progress that will set January alight. PISCES (February 20 March 20) 2019 will be quite a year for Pisceans. Your twin rulers, Jupiter and Neptune (both in their celestial homes) create a dynamic relationship which really gets going just as this month’s Supermoon Eclipse arrives. So, if you were thinking that you could take your foot off the gas now that Mars is leaving your sign, you might well be disappointed! Yet, what January lacks in relaxation,

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) According to the textbooks, Capricorns are realists… not prone to flights of fantasy or to chasing mirages. But don’t let anyone suggest that you’re unimaginative. You’re just as capable of being creative as impressionistic Pisces; and as empathetic as caring Cancerians. It’s just that you like your playfulness to have an end-product, and know that your investment will lead to an increase in good fortune. As January rolls by, you can afford to let your hair down. Your hard work begins to pay off, with surprisingly positive results. it will more than make up for in opportunity. Saturn’s presence assures that the effort you make now will create solid foundations for a successful year. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Are you feeling feisty?

Hungry? Ready to take on a sprint and be first over the line? If you’re not, then get ready! As Mars returns to Aries, it helps to ensure a continuation of the momentum created by Uranus’ change of direction in your sign. It’s

the promise of petrol in your tank and extra oomph in your batteries. With the road stretching so invitingly before you, you’ll need to slow down for corners and watch out for bumps. The coming eclipses bring you an invitation to excel. Every effort you expend should bring a noticeable gain. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Since Taurus is an earth sign, when the January Supermoon Eclipse arrives in the part of the sky that represents your roots and emotional foundations, it’s in comfortingly familiar territory. Your dilemma this month, stems from the creative link it forms to your ruler Venus, just as Venus converges with Jupiter and links with etherial Neptune. As you focus on creating some stability in your life, you’ll find yourself being pulled to explore a fantasy. Just bear in mind that the right opportunity asks only what you can afford to willingly give. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) Just because Mercury is leaving s opposite sign doesn’t mean that you should shift your focus away from key relationships. A sociable start to your new year bodes well for strengthening a rapport and sealing your reputation as someone who is both fun and reliable. With so much generous goodwill on offer, just make sure that you don’t

get carried away with enthusiasm and overlook the efforts made by someone whose opinion you value. If you recognise the faith you’re being shown this month, you’ll be rewarded in kind. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) Even though Cancerians are affected by lunar variations more than any other sign, it’s not quite as simple as ‘Super Moon: super you’. There’s no need to rush out into the sales shopping for undergarments to wear over your clothes and a superhero mask! Yet, as the January Eclipses take shape, with a swoop of activity you’ll be able to turn parts of your life around and reconfigure an important relationship. If that sounds a little more like the I.T. department than The Avengers, as you’ll soon prove, heroes don’t always wear capes! LEO (July 24 - August 23) With the Sun moving into your opposite sign, many of the celestial signposts indicate that this month is all about you. The Supermoon Eclipse takes place in Leo, and your ruler plays an important part in two major celestial events. So, although there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained, there’s little doubt who’s the star of the show! Being in the limelight means having to justify being the centre of attention. Yet your

creativity and charm suggest that you’ll rise to the occasion. You’re a natural, so let that shine through! VIRGO (August 24 September 23) The year starts as it means to go on, with the focus on creativity and friendship. Mercury, your ruling planet, moves into your fifth solar house, which is traditionally associated with the Leo theme of generosity. With the Sun being the focus of so much celestial attention as it forms two Eclipses, it creates several lovely aspect patterns with your ruler, emphasising the cosmic gifts on offer. You can mix creativity with precision, and playfulness with productivity. Use these gifts well, and January will be a blessing that takes you very far indeed. LIBRA (September 24 October 23) The Supermoon Eclipse isn’t the only star of the show in the celestial theatre this month. Venus and Jupiter are also staging a display. Even though they don’t have quite the same star-power, as your ruler and the planet of adventure converge, they put you at centre stage. Take any chance you can to share your feelings, and be generous with your trusting heart. As long as you act with consideration and generosity, you’ll find an appreciative audience, and reviews that will stand you

in good stead for the rest of the year. SCORPIO (October 24 November 22) This month, your traditional ruler Mars moves into a sector of the zodiac where its power is unfettered. Add this to the impact made as the Sun converges with your modern ruler Pluto, and the signs are good for any Scorpios looking to make an impact at the start of the year. Yet, no one will make you come off the bench and take control of the game. You can take your time, and watch a situation unfold. But when the cosmos gifts you with power, it’s hard to justify sitting on the sidelines. And this month, there’s plenty worth playing for. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) As Sagittarius prepares to host the first exact Venus-Jupiter conjunction since 1995, it’s time to consider how you’d like this significant moment to affect your life. Now I know that asking a Sagittarian to plan ahead is a little like asking a cat to swim. You can do it, but you’d rather use your reflexes on the fly to avoid choppy waters. But as 2019’s important JupiterNeptune journey sets sail this month, you can dream big and be inspired. The Supermoon Eclipse brings an opportunity to change an attractive idea into an enviable outcome.

Countries competing for medals came from Australia, China,

Guam, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan. Upwards of 300 bowlers were competing in the Championships. Australia was successful in 3 bronze medals. Of which we are all very proud. As a first international tournament for both Terry and Vivienne it was a very amazing experience. Nothing made me

prouder than to be selected to carry the Australian Flag during the opening ceremony. One I will never forget. We would both like to personally thank Bribie RSL, Caboolture Sports Club and Simone Wilson for their sponsorship towards our competition.--

YOUR SAY

RANTS & RAVES

Dear Editor,

but I can work on them further if you’d like. In the meantime here are the punchlines:

I cannot accept the need to send a weather presenter on a jolly to the Ski Fields in Canada when presenting Australian weather.

“A typical Liberal voter,” he said, “smug, selfish, uncaring and in the pockets of Big Business!”

So where are these places that are given as – “The Goldie, Tassie, the Alice, etc.”.

“Oh no! He’s a Labor voter!” she exclaimed “A hypocritical yobbo… in the pocket of Big Business!”

I’ve always preferred your paper over that “Other” Bribie giveaway – yours has usually been free of political input, whereas the other one is a shill for the Liberal Party conservatives and reptilian social conservatives.

“Just like a One Nation voter,” he groaned “An ignorant bigot… in the pockets of Big Business!”

So I was disappointed to see your “Laugh Riot” section take a spiteful whack at Greens voters (“no job, no plans…”). This is just another inaccurate caricature with no basis in actual fact. Still, I’m sure it raised a few guffaws in your readership, so in the interests of balance, I thought I’d submit a few more jokes for you. I haven’t got them all written yet, just the endings,

It seems to me that it is a total addon cost and unnecessary?

With possible showers, sunny with occasional rain, windy at times and hot. I ask with the millions spent on weather that more accuracy is given than possible weather, and keep our presenters in Australia rather than junket’s overseas. Come Home Stevie!

Let me know if you’d like more zingers like these – I got a million of ‘em.

A Happy 2019 to all. Farley

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY? WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR AND VOICE YOUR LOCAL OPINION!

Given that we are advised of forthcoming weather wouldn’t it be nice to have weather presenters do it properly?
