A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN

Early voting is well underway, and locals have begun having their say on the future of our Nation. After six years of Liberal cuts and chaos, people in our community have been telling me that it’s time for a change of Government. Wherever I go, I’m hearing that people want a Government that sticks up for a fair go for regular Australians – not the top end of town. People want their local schools to be properly

funded, they want hospital cuts to be reversed, and they want people to look after local pensioners. We’ve been let down by the LNP and their out-of-touch priorities which is why I’ve been fighting so hard for our community to get its fair share. Whether you are voting by post, at an early voting centre (like the Bribie Orchid Society at 156A First Avenue), or waiting for Election Day on May 18 – I’m sticking up for people like you.

When you cast your ballot, I hope that I can count on your support so I can deliver my positive plan for our community.

Susan Lamb MP Federal Member for Longman

Sticking up for our local healthcare system After six years of Liberal Government, our local healthcare has suffered through the cut after cut to the point that people are avoiding going to the doctor because they just can’t afford it. I’m determined to fix this. With a Shorten Labor Government I will reverse the LNP’s $2.9 million cut to our Caboolture Hospital, end the Liberals’ Medicare Freeze, and put a cap on skyrocketing private health insurance premiums. I will also deliver an Urgent Care Clinic for Bribie Island so locals don’t have to travel 30 minutes to Caboolture Hospital to receive the care that they need. On top of all this, Labor will also invest in a Pensioner Dental Plan - ensuring that up to three million Australians have access to free dental care. We all know that there’s nothing more important than our health, that’s why I’m committed to sticking up for the health of our healthcare system.

Listening to our community to deliver for our community I’ve always said that when you listen, you hear things. And, as your local representative, hearing what you have to say is what shapes and guides my plan – our plan – for the area. And after years of hard work, it’s now all starting to pay off. Conversations with Bribie locals is what made me fight for an Urgent Care Clinic for Bribe Island, and now a Shorten Labor Government will deliver it. A petition from Val – another local to the island – is what made me lobby the Shadow Minister to allocate 5 roaming Centrelink Support Workers to come to regional areas like Bribie, to help pensioners, veterans, and young families with their claims – and now a Shorten Labor Government will deliver it. And thanks to the many Bribie locals who called my office and expressed their views about Bribie Bridge’s pelicans – because of you, I reached out to State Minister Mark Bailey to Bring Back our Pelicans – and he’s now asked TMR to look at options to bring the pelicans back to the bridge. I’m proud to be your local representative, and I’ll always make sure that your voice gets heard. Authorised by Susan Lamb MP, Australian Labor Party, Level 1, 69 King Street Caboolture Qld 4510.

Labor’s Fair Go Plan

for our community [Special Education Edition]

Each issue I will be highlighting a part of Labor’s positive plan for our community. I’m proud of our comprehensive suite of policies that sticks up for a fair go for locals.

Giving local kids the best start at life

Ask anyone and they’ll agree that our kids deserve the best start in life – they’re the future of our Nation after all. That’s why I’m so proud to be working with Labor to deliver Australia’s biggest ever investment in Early Childhood Education. Under a Shorten Labor Government, working families will experience huge relief to their cost-of-living with a $4 billion investment in early education. Every single family in Australia earning up to $174,000 will get cheaper child care with Labor. This is on top of our National Preschool and Kindy program where every three and four year old child in Australia will be able to access 15 hours of kindy education each week. Having worked in the sector for a number of years, I know how important these early years are to a child’s development. Local parents (and grandparents!) aren’t the only ones who benefit from Labor’s plan – because this is an investment in the future of our country.

Reversing the LNP’s cuts to our local schools Before I became your local representative in Parliament, I used to work in a classroom – I spent a number of years working as a teacher aide at Dakabin State School. It was there that I experienced first-hand the importance of fair funding for local schools; how vital Government funding is to guide bright young minds. That’s why I’m committed to reversing the over $25 million that the Scott Morrison and the LNP cut from local schools. Kids at schools like Banksia Beach State School and Beachmere State School shouldn’t miss out because the LNP have their priorities all wrong. With Labor, I’m also committed to investing nearly $80,000 to upgrade the STEM facilities at Bribie Island State High School – ensuring that local kids have access to the resources they need to be Australia’s next generation of great minds. I’m proud to be a standing up with Labor to make sure that our local schools get a fair go.

Happy Mother’s Day BRIBIE MUMS

If you look beyond the commercial aspect of Mother’s Day it is fair to say that of all the special days that we set aside to recognise an important milestone or event, Mother’s Day is one of the more significant days celebrated in our Australian culture. Sure it can be argued that it is yet another commercial opportunity to sell stuff, but honestly, no one can deny that down the centuries motherhood has been one of the most important roles that women have taken on. So setting one day aside to recognise the important role of mothering is one of the more sensible suggestions to celebrate a cause with a special day. Of course, mums by and large are the ones that in our society make the big sacrifices to ensure stability in the family unit.

And today’s mums are really no different from mums in the past. Take for example our “Mums Too Cool for School” front cover story. It is a great example of a number of mothers of students attending Bribie Island State School who saw an overwhelming need to provide their children with a comfortable learning environment. And given the heat wave conditions from which we are now having a respite what better way than to provide air conditioning for the entire school. It’s a great story of how a positive approach to fundraising involving the whole Bribie community is seeing them fast achieving their goal to cool the school. Good on you mums (and dads).

MUMS TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL T he cooler weather is making for a pleasant change but have a think back a few months ago and remember when we had day after day of mid30-degree temperatures. Even our beautiful Island paradise wasn’t spared this last Summer’s blistering heatwave conditions. Well if you are a parent who sends their child or children to Bribie Island State School then you will be well aware of the committed folk on the Parents & Citizens Association who are madly fundraising by holding a Mother’s Day raffle that will see their efforts rewarded with yet another school block air conditioned. Speaking with their P&C president Leanne White it is clear that all these women have done a tremendous amount of work cajoling and persuading business owners to donate to such a worthy cause. GLEEMAN LEAVE THEM SMILING W

By John Gaffy

ith a rousing rendition of “If You’re Irish Come Into The Parlour” the Bribie Gleeman and Titanic Musical Company introduced their latest production, of the same name, to a capacity audience gathered to enjoy an afternoon of Irish music. Assembled on stage under the direction of their musical director, Trevor Vincent, was a company of around 30 male singers whose talent and love of singing was obvious from this first song. The enthusiasm of around thirty male voices performing such songs as “The Orange and The Green”, “Sweet Rosie O’Grady” and “An Irish Lullaby” was contagious, with the audience needing little encouragement to join in. Accompanied by Debbie Thorpe on keyboard and Tom Kimmet on Irish pipes, various solo artists entertained with a wide variety of songs ranging from the infamous “pub” songs such as “Whiskey in the Jar” and “Jug of Punch” to the romance of “The Rose of Tralee” and “I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen”.

$ Irish humour came to the fore in items such as “Who Put the Overalls in Mistress Murphy’s Chowder” and an energetic version of “Clancy Lowered the Boom”. The harmonising talent of the company was demonstrated by a group, laughingly referred to as the Wondering Minstrels, in their rendition of “Fields of Gold” and “Endearing Young Charms”. A moving version of “Danny Boy” followed by an upbeat humorous rendition of “Macnamara’s Band”, including kazoos, brought the concert to an end, but not before the audience demanded encores. The hall was filled with the sound of “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” and the smiles on the faces of the audience was surely evidence of a most entertaining concert and satisfying reward for the work of all involved. As a result, a $1000 donation was made the Neighbourhood Centre. The Irish would be proud!

DEMOCRACY IS ALIVE AND WELL ON BRIBIE ISLAND

O Media Release Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Mark Bailey MP 1 May 2019 Statement from Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey Bribie Island residents have shown how much they love the island’s pelicans, and we are listening to them. Transport and Main Roads (TMR) were constantly replacing lights on the bridge that were damaged by waste from the pelicans sitting on top of them. Workers replacing the lights also needed to partially close traffic lanes, so the frequent light changes were costly and inconvenientfor locals. During a recent lighting upgrade, TMR installed new LED lights and metal bars on top to stop pelicans damaging the lights and potentially getting injured from overheated light casings. The switch to energy efficient LED lights will provide better lighting on the bridge and reduce costs, but I want to make sure the pelicans have a safe place to rest that also allows people to continue enjoying them. Following representations from Longman MP Susan Lamb, I’ve asked TMR to look at options that might allow Bribie’s beloved pelicans to stay around the bridge.

r at least there are the tentative positive signs that a good protest march and some vigorous lobbying by our local politicians may have had an effect on our Mary Street Tower of Power political masters. A follow-up call to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads’ office from the Bribie Islander Magazine on Monday after the “Save the Pelicans bridge protest march” was greeted with a wary “Oh is it about the pelicans?”. So you could say that Mark Bailey’s staffers were certainly reading the mood of the people up here and were fast getting on top

of the issue that had so many on Bribie turning out to voice their concerns about our beloved pelicans’ roosting spots on the Bribie Bridge lamp posts. Anyway, suffice to say the fact that we had a Ministerial statement sent to us for publication in less than 24 hours gives you some idea of how important The Honourable Minister Mark Bailey sees the issue. It will take time to see a solution provided for our feathered friends but in the meantime, you can at least read the Minister’s statement and draw your own conclusions.

“The most influential experience of my Master degree was an internship in the Philippines last year, working for the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. “I also gained a lot from a student project where I took on the role of community engagement officer for a farming cooperative pilot project in the Mary Valley.”

“I am the first person in my family to attend university and I am grateful for their endless support during my time at USC,” she said.

LOCALS ONLY

By Alby Lincoln

W

hat an incredible day on the April Locals Only Show, with a few newcomers, some old friends and some very great music. Two more younger artists to appear for the first time and ‘Wow!’ the Locals community. First was a very young lad, Diezel, who played keyboards and delivered two really well-rehearsed numbers. Diezel is the grandson of Locals guitarist, Col Shields who watched proudly as he played. A delightful young lady, Bribie High School student, Kiani Jazz, took to the stage and the audience couldn’t get enough. We were told that she had been runner

up in a busking competition and it didn’t take long to find out why. Kiani played a couple of solo numbers and one with the WhamBam Thank You Band. She also won the Blueys Performer of the Day. We’re all so looking forward to seeing these two young performers in the future. Another highlight of the show was the appearance of Hayden Kirley after an absence of a few years. He’s become a really exceptional performer and songwriter. He said later, that watching the two younger performers brought back some memories of his first time at Locals. Hayden is the son of country music singer/ songwriter, Leigh Kirley, who has graced our stage several times. .......and the surprises kept coming, in the form of

We are very lucky to have regular performers like Col Shields, Jenine Williams, Mark Edwards and this bloke... Neil Downs. Kiwiborn entertainer, Neil often plays later in the day, performing a great many genres of music... Roy Orbison, Elvis, Johnny Cash but always throws some sort of different song into the mix. A really fine vocalist and guitarist. Another Shave for the World fundraiser saw a lovely young student say goodbye to her locks, for a great cause. Organisers said later that the event had been very successful and it was a really big thing for the young lady involved. A big Well Done to the Locals community for being so supportive of these events. A big Shoutout to Dan Burns, the host of the show,

singer/songwriter, Nathan Skinner, another regular from years ago. Nathan is an outstanding songwriter/wordsmith who played an excellent set. One of the crowd favourites, Frolly, have changed their name to Gonzo Zonk. A 3 piece outfit, they rocked the beer garden again. Amanda’s son, Ryan did a great job on the sound desk as well. Great music, folks. It was also a pleasure to having guitarist, Peter Orr back on our stage again. He’s become a bit of a jet setter of late, so hasn’t been available for recent shows. If you’re into great guitarists, come and see this man’s superb musicianship.

who is really relishing in his role and is a crowd favourite and Matterson ( No .. I can’t turn the volume up) Knyvett, the sound guy. Such is his commitment to Locals Only that he was in the middle of something important when he remembered that the Show was on and turned up to make the show problem free. Thanks to both of you for your support and input into presenting this Show. Next Locals Only Show is on the 26th May, beginning at 1 pm and featuring two more new performers, as well as the usual suspects. In other news.... Popular Locals Only performer, Jenine Williams, has just recorded her original song, ‘Festival’, and it’s going to be used in an episode of Landline, on the ABC. Well done. Endless Valley has been working very hard and appearing at many venues in Brisbane to wide acclaim. These folks play their own music, all original and always memorable. Brad and Cavell Schipp, both Bribie lads are the spine behind this very original band. Great to see them doing well with this project. Ryan Kennedy is doing very well at Uni and will return to the stage for Locals Only in the near future. Looking forward to that one. Mike Early made a surprise visit for a gig at Blueys with his good buddy, Billy on drums. It was a beautiful way to begin the Easter weekend and the crowd certainly felt the same. Sometimes it’s easy to forget what a wonderful entertainer Mike is. Having Billy along set the mood for a very successful evening.

Keep an eye out for them again. Finally, Blueys management has presented some really fine entertainment over the last few years, but lately, it’s been just exceptional. With Friday night entertainment of a standard you’d expect to have to pay to see, the venue is increasing in popularity...as dining venue, a live music and entertainment venue as well as being a principal fundraising venue. For about a year, Blueys beer garden has hosted some of the most jawdropping acts that are indescribable. These include the phenomenal Dave Lynch Jr, (the human jukebox), Grant Daniel, (man of a thousand voices), the delightful Sam Fall, Award winner Jack James, Ricky Taite... Mike Early’s Doodads, Cool Coda.. every one of these is just brilliant entertainment and musicianship and most enjoyable to see. Every now and again though, Blueys is witness to some entertainment which is heart-stoppingly good. At the beginning of April, the beer garden hosted Alexis Sawford, another fabulous musician and vocalist only this time he brought his duo partner, Susie, with him.. and what a show they put on. With so many different genres of music, the professionalism of both entertainers came very much to the fore... It’s been stated many times since that Alexis and Susie are the best act seen in a long time. Keep an eye out in this magazine for a heads up when they will return. Alexis will be playing on the third of May but it’s not certain whether Susie will be there. In any case, Alexis is just as formidable on his own.

hen thinking about many of the great wines Australian winemakers have made over the last two hundred years we tend to think of companies such as Penfolds, Yalumba, Orlando etc. but very little mention is made of some of the great wine writers who have affected our purchases of wines we may never otherwise have considered, in this article we shall look at how two such wine writers have made such an impact on the styles of wines we drink and their importance to our great industry. Firstly a Pom Leonard Paul Evans AO OBE arrived on our shores in 1955 arriving from New Zealand where he had emigrated to from England in 1953. Len Evans was born in Felixstowe of Welsh parents in 1930 and soon developed a passion for Australian wines which at this time mainly consisted of sweet fortified wines and sweet white wines. He felt it was

26

important that wine be demystified and the basic understanding of wines be available to everyone and not to the educated elite. He became the first wine columnist in Australia and started with a column in The Australian Women’s Weekly discussing various wines, especially those that were reasonably priced and in a language that everyone understood, perhaps there are some writers today that could learn a lesson here when I read of some descriptions given to the characters that wines are supposed to have! In 1965 he was the founding director of The Australian Wine Bureau and in 1973 wrote the first major Encyclopedia of Australian wine. He was one of the first leaders to recognise the value of Australian table wines and their future rather than sweet fortified wines. He also championed the pleasure of drinking wine with food and co-authored a book with the famous

cook Graham Kerr with whom they became known as The Galloping Gourmets a nickname they got from a 35-day worldwide trek visiting some of the finest restaurants around the world. He started the winery in The Hunter Valley known as Rothbury Estate in 1969 until it was sold in 1996, I wonder what his feeling would be today when his brainchild now appears on wine lists as a house wine basically exclusive to restaurants only or some wine clubs. He was also involved with Petaluma from 1978 until 1992 and these wines still excel to this day, he was also chairman of Evans Family Wines from 1980 and Tower Estate from 1998 which is now owned by Evans close friends Matthew Cowley and Ken Cowley. If you have ever attended a wine tasting only to be confronted by bottles of wines disguised in paper bags and you have to try to work out the variety, the

By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au age and where it comes from then blame Len Evans because he transformed blind tastings into a competition sport through his creating and developing the options game. For his dedication to the wine industry, he received many awards including the Epicurean Award for services to the Wine and Food Industry, The Charles Heidsieck Award for Wine Writing. He was appointed an Officer of The Order of The British Empire in 1982 and an Officer of The Order of Australia in 1999, after a history of heart disease dating back to 1976 Len Evans died of a heart attack in 2006. In 2014 The Len Evans Memorial Lookout was unveiled in the heart of The Hunter Valley at Constable Estate. James Halliday has been described as a protégé of Len Evans and his successor as “Australia’s leading wine writer”, which is a long way from being a partner at leading law firm Clayton Utz where he worked

from 1966 to 1988. James Halliday was born in 1938 and is a wine writer, critic, winemaker and senior competition judge. Since 1979 he has written and co-authored more than 40 books on wine and since 1986 has published an annual overview of Australian Wine vineyard by vineyard, since 2000 this book has become known as the James Halliday Annual Wine Companion and is available from newsagents and bookshops. He has received numerous awards for his writing including The Julia Child award for Best Wine, Spirits or Beer Book in 1994 and The Maurice O’Shea Award for Outstanding Contribution to The Australian wine industry in 1995. Mr Halliday was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2010 for his services to the industry

BUSINESS NEWS

WHOSE IDEA WAS IT TO BUY A CAFE? PART 3 - THE END A

By Richard Whetlor

fter my last article, I talked about the experiences of owning and running a cafe from scratch with zero experience in the hospitality industry. It has been a real eyeopener I can tell you! We have now sold the cafe to Aaron and his youtube star kids from Bellara!

Me and Selina (my wife) bought the Cafe in September last year and knew that it would be a bit tricky at the weekends what with 3 kids and all but we soldiered on and made it work as best we could. The experience we gained and the people we met were great! Not all of the people were great though. In the early days of operating we met a senior couple that came for breakfast on a busy Sunday morning, the lady ordered

an extra piece of bacon. After our young cafe hand came back in looking rather sheepish, I asked: “what’s wrong?” The lady had just abused him because she never got her extra piece of bacon. I went out and apologised several times offered to get the missing bacon, nope, offered her money back, nope, asked how I could make the situation right, nope! She said we had failed as a cafe and that she was going to tell everyone on Bribie that we are the worst cafe on the island!! Clearly, she was out to upset someone and no doubt unhappy, you know that sort of person I mean? So I simply responded in a polite voice “well that’s stupid, isn’t it? Because you don’t know everyone on Bribie do you?” And walked off. I don’t like to be rude but I also won’t take that kind of crap. She did not know what to say and was never seen at the cafe again, thank god. On this note I have to say that I will never complain again about waiting at a cafe or restaurant, not that I do anyway but I now know

why it takes an hour to get a tables food out and it’s not funny or pleasant to have the pressure on and a load of hungry customers or is it, hangry customers! Remember next time you’re out for a feed on a Sunday morning being the busiest day, remember to be patient or ask at the time of ordering how long it will be? I’m sure everyone working are trying as hard as they can to get it right but it is a tough gig I can tell you, so be gentle! Welcome Aaron, Alex and Aedan to the cafe industry but this is now a cafe with a difference its called “The Digital Cafe” and already has 2 massive screens at the front and Aaron has plans to add more digital features along the way so watch this space, and don’t forget to shop at The Digital Cafe and subscribe to their facebook page for free coffee and more super deals!!

Well done guys I wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing The Digital Cafe grow!

CADETS

CADETS UPHOLD PROUD ANZAC DAY TRADITION T

By Rozlynn Bierton

he 25th of April is held as a solemn day for all Australians, it is a day, we as a nation come together in formal ceremonies to remember, reflect and most of all never forget those who paid the absolute supreme sacrifice. It is a day that we as Maritime Safety Military Cadets hold with the utmost respect and appreciation and show this by attending three services within our region. The first dawn service at Toorbul followed by the Toorbul March and day service and ending with the Donnybrook late morning service. Our day began for most at 2.00am getting ready for a 3:30 am start, where 25 staff and cadets left Bribie Island bound for the Dawn service at Toorbul. All eyes were still weary, but all minds set on the task ahead - to pay our respects and do our small bit. We arrived at around 4 am where we then prepared the squad in formation and the guard

30

drew their weapons. A quick uniform check and re-dress, a few adjustments on our weapon slings and it was time to all fall in. The dawn service is always the most solemn, it marks the first light, firstly as a representation of that day some 104 years ago and secondly as a military tradition of commencing of the day at first light. Standing totally still, we reflected and thought in silence. When the Dawn service completed we had the pleasure of meeting a Royal Australian Naval Officer Commodore E. Rushbrook, a doctor and a senior naval officer, it was great for the cadets to speak with her. MSMC provided the guard (catafalque party) for all three services and they did a fantastic job. Bravo Zulu. Our second ceremony was the Toorbul March and day ceremony, we formed up after we had a couple of hours rest from the Dawn service and a few photos. The March paraded many of the Veterans of

the local area alongside the cadets. It’s great to see the connection still so strong between veteran and youth. We marched through Toorbul, along the waterfront and back up to the Toorbul Rural Fire Service building where we observed a moving ceremony. Following the ceremony, the Toorbul RFS put on an amazing breakfast, bacon and egg rolls, and drinks which was a muchappreciated break. We stowed our weapons, and helped tidy up before leaving for the Donnybrook Day service, we observed the ceremony and maintained a guard all held by the Donnybrook local community groups. Another very moving ceremony.

Thanks to Donnybrook progress association we had an awesome lunch, of sandwiches and wraps, a sausage sizzle, cakes and slices, and all sorts of soft drinks, tea & coffee- all supplied to us - a huge thank you to Donnybrook. After an extremely busy and long day, we were all looking forward to having a rest, everyone hopped on the truck - Kindly Donated for the day. By Gateway Bribie Adventures and we headed home, concluding our day around 1.30pm. “Lest We Forget” We parade Navy & Army Cadets on Friday nights 6-30pm to 9-30 pm during school term ages 10-18 years. The group meets each Thursday at the Indoor Bowls Hall on First Avenue

Sarah Dyer, a local Bribie Island resident, is a carer for her mother who suffers from Orbital Myositis. Sarah also happens to be a member of the local Lions Club and has organised a Trivia Fundraising afternoon at the Bribie Island Lions Club on Saturday 25 May from 2 pm to 6 pm in aid of the Brisbane Myositis Support Group. So if you feel you would enjoy an afternoon of fun and Trivia frivolity while supporting a worthy cause or if you are a local business owner who would like to help then Sarah would love to hear from you. “To raise funds we are selling 10 to 12 tables which will consist of five to six people per table. Cost per

person to enter is only $10. People can book a table and organise their friends or family to come along. Or if you like the fun of a Trivia afternoon you can take a single ticket and we will put you on a table with other trivia buffs,” said Sarah. “There will be a free lucky door prize, round prizes and overall winner prizes on offer along with raffle tickets available for purchase. As well there will be $3 plates of afternoon tea, as well as the usual beverages of coffee, tea, soft drinks for sale along with wine and beer on offer,” she said.

DO YOU LOVE A GOOD FOSSICK?

O

n May 18th, most of us will be fossicking for our next “national treasure” so if you are out and about already, you may like to continue to the Uniting Church in Webster Street, Bongaree and join us at the Annual “Trash and Treasure Trove” from 8am to 12 midday. This is a community event and there are many stalls from different service organisations and others such as sausage sizzle, art and crafts, freshly baked cakes and sweets, plants, morning tea and, inside the church hall, lots of different treasures that have been donated for sale. This allows many folk to raise funds for their particular organisation.

Audrey and Lynne exploring and organising a few of the donated treasures. This is a fun time of fossicking for treasures and sharing time with others. On sale will be furniture, jewellery, electrical items in working order, records, books, almost anything that one can imagine. It’s fun looking through such items to find “just the right thing” to suit our needs or desires.

Get along and find a bargain!

“Funds will go towards supporting Queenslanders affected by Myositis through providing information for patients and GP’s, ways to assist health and wellbeing, and support as the disease progresses.” To book your table or to find out a bit more about this worthy fundraising event contact Sarah on 0416 051 031 or Mary on 0438 804 560.

very resident on Bribie Island I am sure would be familiar with the Little Corella which populates the Island in large noisy flocks. They are mainly to be found in residential neighbourhoods and at Bongaree around the jetty area is a favourite haunt. Little Corellas are largish, white Cockatoos about 36-39 cm in length and weighing 300-400 g. They have small crests, blue skin around their eyes and

pink to red feathers around their bills. Their scientific name Cacatua sanguine which means blood-stained cockatoo. This refers to these markings. Both male and female are similar in plumage and size. It’s not so long ago that there were no Little Corellas in coastal areas as they were confined to arid outback areas where the conditions were mainly boom and bust. In good seasons the Little Corellas thrived but drought spelled disaster for their

population. Gradually during these dry periods, the Corellas began moving towards the coast. During the Millennium drought of 1996 to mid-2010, there was a sizable migration towards the cities where our living conditions suit them very well and where there is an abundance of food and water. Now they are widespread throughout Australia. Increased agriculture also played a part in their movement towards the coast in the late nineties.

Their main foods are grass seeds, grains and occasionally fruit. I have watched Corellas at Bongaree attacking a patch of grass, pulling out the plants and eating small bulbs from the root system. One of their habits is to strip leaves from trees, sometimes defoliating an entire tree in a few days. This habit makes them unpopular with gardeners and horticulturists, while their tendency to destroy whole grain crops exasperates the farmers. So Little Corellas are unpopular with a fairly large range of people. This is a pity as they are so entertaining and are sometimes referred to as “The Court Jesters of the Bird World”. I sometimes sit and watch them while they are frolicking on the ground or in trees performing the most extraordinary feats. I have seen them slippery-sliding down steep corrugated iron roofs and going back and repeating the act over and over. They sometimes hang upside down and swing from a tree branch and on the ground when they are feeding, they get up to all sorts of tricks and look as if they are really enjoying themselves. Of

course, there are lots of squabbles as well which adds to the entertainment. I don’t know if they breed on Bribie Island as I am yet to see them nesting. Little Corellas are thought to be monogamous. They make their nests in large almost vertical hollows in trees near water, in high river banks and sometimes in termite nests. Their nests are often used for many years. Clutches of 2-4 white eggs are laid on the wood chip lining of the nest and are incubated by both parents for about 24 days. Chicks are born completely naked and helpless. After a while, they develop a yellowish down before growing feathers. They fledge at about 6-8 weeks. Corellas nest in large colonies so require many suitable hollows. This can lead to displacing other species that also require

hollows which are fast dwindling with continued development. Other common names for Little Corellas are “Little Cockatoo” and “Blue-eyed Cockatoo”. “Birdirra” was the name given to them by an aboriginal tribe in Western Australia. They

were kept as pets, cooked for food and the feathers were used in ceremonies. There are two other species of Corella in Australia. Both are larger but we are unlikely to see them in the wild on Bribie Island unless there is a cage escapee. They are easy to tame and are sometimes kept as pets

Their range is widening with more land clearing and more water outlets being made available. To date, Corellas have overcome most threats and are thriving with the help of the human species.

COMMUNITY

POETRY Main Roads colours they did wear The pulled down all the lampposts And put up new instead They all had trays above With a very special tread There were light poles on the buildings And light poles in the street And the Bribie bridge had a hundred It really looked a treat

MAD Poets THE BATTLE FOR BRIBIE ISLAND (A WARNING TO GOVERNING BODIES) A Councillor eats more than a peli-can So which one would you keep The one makes you welcome to Bribie Or the one that makes you weep A councillor doesn’t sit on a lamppost Upon the Bribie Bridge All they know about pelicans Is that they won’t fit in the fridge The council they put in new light poles Made to keep the pelicans off With sharp wires and pointy bits That made the locals scoff

Well the locals didn’t like it This arrogant disregard, So they lined the bridge to show them That their path is gonna be hard

So they flew off to lake Eyre, Where the pelicans gather in flood, And had a desperate meeting Standing down there in the mud The Bribie ones related The disaster that had occurred And around the lake the wings did beat As the pelicans passed the word They came to a great decision “Retaliate” was the cry And the sky began to darken As the pelicans began to fly 46

www.thebribieislander.com.au

At the tip in Caboolture The pelicans dived en masse And their beaks they filled with rubbish And other filthy trash. They flew into the council As the councillors arrived at work And bombed them with the rubbish They even got the clerk Wave after wave they bombed them Till the street was full of dirt The rubbish piled higher Till the councillors were inert The bombing continued for hours Then came a second burst The message was yesterday’s breakfast The white long streaks came first

They didn’t do their research Into what would be the best They did whatever they felt like And bugger all the rest.

The pelicans flew from pole to pole No landing could be found Said “the humans aren’t happy With just taking over the ground”

The pelicans were happy And the locals mighty glad The Main Roads went away They looked a little sad

Then came storks with nappies The bombed them just as fast But the nappies had been used And they councillors were aghast A councillor struggled to his feet Yelled “Hey it wasn’t us! Main Roads was responsible So don’t kick up a fuss!” Now this was all unusual But two hundred thousand birds Gave great voice in a manner That became the envy of all nerds “We didn’t do our homework To show you what it’s like If you act without some research And then put in a spike” The councillors acted quickly As the chambers crashed under the weight “Quick contact the Main Roads now Before it’s too bloody late” And very soon on Bribie a new sound rent the air Twas the sound of heaps of trucks

The Bribie Islander

The mess left in Caboolture Was enough to break the back Of duplicating the M 1 Material they did not lack When they opened the new highway They said they didn’t use cement They wouldn’t say what it was made of But we know it’s excrement And now everyone’s happy Even the Main Roads For the pelicans paint the white lines And keep the road clear of toads The moral of this poem is simple They should have had a clue Check out the wants of the majority And not the thoughts of a few Peter Gibson

WHEN LIFE HAPPENS.

When life happens, are we ready? Does it catch us by surprise? Can we grab the opportunities That happen to arise? We just go along at first. Take life as it comes. Learn to grin and bear it As mothers clean our bums. Through school we struggle feebly To learn the golden rule. Study subjects mysterious And try not to look a fool. When life happens, are we ready To take on a challenging task. Marry, raise a family Do you struggle – dare I ask? And do we laugh along the way Enjoy our days and nights. Grab life by the throat And enjoy the glorious sights? And when life draws to an end Can we say that it was great. Did we make the most of it? Did we enjoy our fate? © Cay Ellem

HISTORY

WELCOME TO BRIBIE By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society

T

here has been some community discussion in recent weeks about replacement of the large “WELCOME to BRIBIE” mural, seen as you reach the island.

This is one of the longstanding iconic images of Bribie, along with the parade of Pelicans on the Bridge lights. The community express strong views about such things being removed or changed without appropriate discussion and understanding. This week’s History Page tells the full story about the “Welcome” Poster mural that may not be known to many.

WELCOME MURAL IDEA. This was conceived as a Community Project in 1988, the Bicentenary year of Australia, to mark the 25th anniversary of the 1963 opening of the Bribie Island Bridge.

the Chamber of Commerce, who then played a very active role in commercial aspects of the island. The idea was to erect something “Typically Bribie” to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Bridge. At that time there was a rather ugly metal framework beside the road in Bellara, that held a variety of advertising signs for local businesses. A plan was developed by the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary to replace the unsightly advertising hoarding with a large and unique painting. Advertisers were contacted and they agreed to forego the remainder of their display contracts in favour of a large and original “Welcome Mural Painting” in the same location. Local artist Dale Marsh was contacted and agreed on a voluntary basis to paint an original mural. He prepared a small modern colour composite drawing for approval, showing typical Bribie faces, and Council agreed for a large version to be created on the Council ground on which the old hoarding stood.

The new Rotary Club of Bribie Island raised the remarkable sum of $6000 to have the old billboard dismantled, de-rusted, zinc coated, re-erected and strengthened to withstand cyclonic winds. Many volunteers became involved with this significant Bribie project and the artist Dale Marsh later wrote; “The tireless and hard selling head of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr David Goode, managed to secure the services of a Brisbane based sign writer to work with me on the project. Dig Maher turned out to be just the man needed. He was experienced in mural work

That was the same year that Rotary International chartered the Rotary Club of Bribie Island in March 1988, and initiated by a few local Rotarians residents led by Roy Pierce. To mark the Bicentenary, residents had approached 48

Dale Marsh Original poster painting The Bribie Islander

Bribie Bridge Postcard 1970’s and had just completed some large projects for Brisbane’s World Expo 88. We got on well together” Dig Maher working in the studio, went about scaling up my detailed drawing using the grid system; scaling up by means of squares, and an overhead projector to produce a full-sized cartoon of the original on large overlapping sheets of white poster paper numbered in sequence. The lines of the drawing were then pricked using a spur wheel. When the paper was in position on the mural surface, we only had to rub lightly with a cloth bag of dry pigment or draw over it with soft charcoal to transfer the drawing onto the panel. It’s an old technique; Michelangelo and Leonardo used it, Working on a plank up in the sky, you cannot step back and see what you are doing and working on heads that size you need to. There is only one way: ... climb all the way down the scaffold, walk across the road, spot the errors, climb back up again, fix them, go back down for another look and so on”.

REGULAR FEATURE

FIRST MURAL UNVEILED Although slightly later than the actual 25th Anniversary of the Bridge in October 1988, the finished work was unveiled on 28th January 1989 and a plaque on a stone plinth reads; This Plaque unveiled by Shire Chairman Stan Muldoon commemorates the official unveiling of the Dale Marsh Mural depicting Bribie Islands lifestyle. A Place of Peace in a troubled world 28-1-89 The “Canvas” on which the artists painted the mural is 13.5 metres long and 6 metres high. Artists’ oil paints were used for the entire project and when completed, Dale said: “Bribie Island has a public mural, which I expect will last a long time - well at least until the Queensland afternoon sun fades it and I suppose I will have to touch it up!”

Regrettably, its longevity was underestimated, and with continual heating of the metal “canvas”, cooling at night, salt-air and weather, all combined to cause fading and deterioration. A couple of other things had been added to the Bridge since its original construction in 1963. The 13 lights on which the Pelicans have until recently been able to perch as another “Welcome” to Bribie were a later addition, as is the light blue painted guard rail between the footpath and road, which was added after a young boy slipped and was fatally run over by a car. After only five years the magnificent oil painting mural was at the end of its useful life and by 1994 it was evident that the much-loved mural would need to be replaced.

REPLACEMENT MURAL There was a strong community commitment to replace the mural and Dale Marsh very graciously offered to provide the community with another new one. His suggestion this time was for a classic scene of family fun on a Bribie beach, which he prepared as another small original painting for consideration. The skills of the artist and modern computerised technology were then combined to reproduce

Welcome Mural painted in 1989 Dale’s new oil painting as a large print on canvas that was erected on the existing structure. The replacement mural showing three children playing on the beach was unveiled on 11th October 1995. The small boy pictured with the two girls playing in the sand dunes was a young Timothy Gould who was featured on the front page of the last edition of this magazine. CONTINUES NEXT PAGE >>

This inspiring young man, now a 27-year-old former local resident, went on to become a Gold and multiple Medal winner for tennis and swimming at several special Olympics.

This came as a surprise to Bribie residents and visitors, many of whom had no real knowledge or appreciation of this remarkable if not unusual man.

Another Plaque was unveiled below the new mural with the almost identical words… This Plaque unveiled by MAYOR JOHN WHITE commemorates the official unveiling of the Dale Marsh Mural depicting Bribie Islands lifestyle.

Ian Fairweather was undoubtedly the most Internationally famous person ever to live on Bribie, albeit as a recluse hermit in a grass hut, for 21 years from 1953 to 1974.

A Place of Peace in a troubled world 11-10-95 The original small oil paintings for both of the murals can be viewed at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre where they are on permanent display.

WELCOME SOMETHING NEW The much-admired replacement “printed” mural continued to be the “Welcome” image to Bribie for a further 15 years, until 2010 when the Mural was temporarily replaced to advertise and promote a new Bribie attraction. The Seaside Museum at Bongaree opened in 2010 and the Welcome

HISTORY CONTINUED Poster was replaced with a Moreton Bay Regional Council poster, showing an Ian Fairweather abstract painting and details about the new Bribie Seaside Museum.

If you did not know or appreciate his artistic style, the Mural was a sharp contrast to the Bribie Island Lifestyle that had become an iconic image for residents and visitors. I certainly knew nothing of Ian Fairweather, or his life on Bribie Island, when I came to live here in 2004. However, it was one of my first Projects with Bribie Rotary when I found out that the original memorial plaque, at the site of his grass hut in Fairweather Park, had long since been vandalised. There was no signage or information to inform people about this historic site.

In 2005, to mark the Centenary of Rotary International, I proposed the installation of a Bronze replacement plaque. I arranged to have a new plaque made and organised an unveiling ceremony attended by a large crowd including the Mayor and Councillor, and many Bribie old-timers who had known Ian Fairweather personally. This was my first real exposure to Bribie History because before that I certainly had no knowledge or interest. At that time there was little documented information about local history, but I was amazed to discover how Bribie Island had played such an important role in the development of Australia and Queensland. Replacing the Ian Fairweather memorial plaque seemed to be a trigger for the growing interest in the man, which led to a Documentary film about his life and work to be made for the ABC. I was delighted to be involved in this project, selecting filming locations and conducting interviews with many long term Bribie characters.

When the new Seaside Museum opened in 2010 it includes a permanent display of Ian Fairweather’s international travels and unique artworks, and several of his original and

Ian Fairweather Plaque personal items passed to me, on permanent loan. The 60-minute documentary film (Fairweather Man) took several years to make and can be viewed at any time in the Seaside Museum Theatre. My knowledge and interest in Bribie History continued to expand and I soon became a Tutor at U3A and in 2008 formed the Bribie Island Historical Society. It seems that the Welcome mural will soon need replacement. It is certainly an integral part of the great feeling people have when they reach Bribie Island. With today’s technology and techniques, there may be opportunities for the community to be involved in creating the next lasting image.

MORE LOCAL HISTORY The Historical Society has monthly public meetings at the RSL Club on the second Wednesday of each month commencing at 6;30pm. with interesting guest speakers on a wide range of topics, and you can see many more photos and articles on our Blog Site at http://bribieislandhistory. blogspot.com or contact us on bribiehistoricalsociety@ gmail.com

CENT AUCTION A GREAT SUCCESS

S

easons Bribie Island recently hosted a Cent Auction which was enjoyed by residents and guests. According to a spokeswoman for Seasons the morning tea was loved by all, and the auction a big success.

“Hosting a Cent Auction is a fun way to raise money for charity, and it also allowed a few of our guests the opportunity to tour our beautiful community on Bribie,” she said.

They have been transformed from used bottles to formations of colourful beauty and grace, standing independently or connected together in support of each other, depicting the changing of lives, re-emerging through recovery and healing. HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

THE WISDOM OF STIRLING MOSS I have often wondered why. It certainly is not his driving ability. But Mossie, as I always call him, is a difficult, dominant man, who must always have his own way, and maybe his personality is partly responsible.

W

By Helly Kemp

idely described as the greatest Formula 1 racing driver of all time, Stirling Moss, in spite of winning 212 races, 16 of them being Grands Prix and being the 1st ever British F1 driver to win his home race, Stirling never wins the World Championship.

52

One of his greatest victories is the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix, where he wins in a Lotus against the much faster Ferraris, as well as setting a new track record in the famous 1,000 miles 1955 Mille Miglia race, right around Italy. Being very much interested in F1 racing, I attempt all the official channels to gain an interview with Moss on my arrival in London in 1968. No luck! So it’s five years later when I finally get his private phone number in London’s Mayfair. I not only introduce myself on the phone but make a daring suggestion, with which, surprisingly, he is delighted: A 3-day interview weekend attending the 1973 NUERBURGRING GERMAN GRAND PRIX. Quite a surprise, as I have never

The Bribie Islander

met the man and know he dislikes journalists! When I ask him later why he agreed so quickly, he simply states, “I liked your super-sounding voice on the phone.” So far so good! Or maybe he thinks we are going to have a romantic weekend??

But then everybody forewarns me not to let him drive my car, as apparently, the F1 icon is not the perfect driver on mortals’ roads, allegedly having been involved in some accidents.

DAY ONE: Mossie begins our weekend date in typical fashion when I arrive one minute before our agreed 5.45 am meeting time. There he stands, tapping his foot on the step outside his Mayfair home. He hates wasting time, opens the boot with one

hand, tosses his luggage in with the other and greets me with the third, (He has a third – I’ll swear it!)

He pales a little when I insist on driving my own car. So I hastily grab the driver’s seat, wave him into the one beside me and smile, hopefully in a very firm manner. “I hereby appoint you navigator for the trip, Mossie!” He does not favour nick-names, but grins at that and keeps grinning, no doubt having decided how quickly to remove me from the steering wheel. I immediately discover he is the worst back seat driver ever, so constant and irritating, that between London and the Dover Hovercraft to take us across the Channel, I already vacate the driver’s seat. But to his credit, during the 12 years I own my 280 SL Mercedes sports car, before bringing it back to Australia with me in 1980, no one ever achieves the low fuel consumption the 43-year-old Mossie masters on this trip. After all sorts of confrontations including officials at the dock and Mossie being convinced we are going to be left behind at the port, and then in Calais, a restaurant that he considers is overcharging…. Very hungry on our two hours drive to Germany we finally find a little snack-bar for lunch. It’s 11 years since Mossie’s retirement from racing,

REGULAR FEATURE but I get a perfect glimpse of how a true star never fades. He is immediately recognised by the owner who proudly announces his discovery, and the autograph hunters pounce, bubbling all sorts of German phrases Mossie doesn’t understand. Having, at last, arrived at Nuerburg, I’m thrilled to hear Jackie Stewart is scheduled in pole position for tomorrow’s race, as I like him very much, (you may remember the photo in my Keith Williams piece where Jackie was my observer when Keith took me water skiing). At last, Mossie relaxes and the blissful look on his face now reminds me of something Jackie once said about taking a fast bend being like an orgasm. So I raise the point. “I wouldn’t say it was a sexual thrill, Mossie replies, “but related to sex. The exhilaration, the satisfaction and the pleasure that one gets from flirting and having a relationship with a woman, is one of the few things that’s as satisfying as going around a corner at the very limit. “A motor race is a multiple climax, all the time, every corner, and therefore it’s on a lower plane than an orgasm, but equally satisfying. “I think women are like cars in this way: how far you can push a woman depends on how expert you are in

handling her, and how well you know her. “In the same way, if you get into a car that you don’t know, and you don’t have the expertise that particular car demands, you’ll get into a corner and oversteer. And wham! You’re in trouble. “If you know the car well and you understand the ‘feeling’ and the balance, you can take slight liberties and get away with it. “Women and cars are the same if you treat them well. It all depends on how compatible you are with each individual one of them. One woman will come alive with one guy

and be quite dowdy with another. Some women can definitely bring out the best in a man. And so can some cars.” I know Mossie and I will be friends, but nothing more. So just in case, he might consider me a possibility as the “some women,” from above, I let him know immediately that I not only have a boyfriend but a young baby as well. And for our whole weekend, Mossie is the perfect gentleman. (DAYS TWO and THREE to be continued in the Bribie Islander Issue 88)

am very happy to introduce Dr Pat Rozanski into our community. He has many years of experience in natural remedies in many different areas such as Chiropractic, Naturopathy, Osteopathy, Kinesiology, Acupuncture, Herbal medicine, Nutrition and Homoeopath. Below article is what Dr Pat says about Naturopathic medicine.

Naturopathic Medicine. Naturopathic Medicine – what is it all about? Why do people become sick? When people reach their ‘Golden years’ – should it be a sentence of pain and suffering or can it be a time of living a fulfilling life full of energy and activity?

Naturopathic Medicine is all about finding the cause of complaints and then organizing lifestyle changes and remedies to cause the body to heal itself. A quick fix’ such as a painkilling tablet, an antibiotic or drug to suppress a symptom is not a longterm solution. Illness may be caused by ‘poor eating habit, too much stress, inherited weaknesses in our bodies. Insufficient exercise. ‘too little water consumption and poison in our environment. 56

Our typical dispensary will contain homeopathic and herbal remedies; vitamins and minerals; other nutritional supplements as well as food supplements which are ‘living’ such as aloe vera, pollen, propolis, royal jelly and green barley powder. So, you see, there is more to ‘feeling good’ than doctoring only when a problem arises! A vital part of naturopathic treatment involves detoxification or cleaning accumulated poisons out of the body. Two easy examples are flushing the kidney or gallbladder and de-sludging arteries. EFT(Emotional Freedom technique) Therapy. BRIBIE ISLAND CHURCH TIMES

By Chris Connolly

BREAKTHROUGH

S

urvival against the odds; a medical miracle never before seen…Both have been used to describe the events depicted in this film. Based on a true story, this film tells the remarkable story of a fourteen-yearold boy named John Smith, played by Marcel Ruiz. It was 19 January in 2015 when John, on a day off from school with two of his friends, decided to have some fun on the icedover lake near his home. Unbeknown to them, the ice had begun to melt that fateful day and cracked beneath them. They all fell into its icy waters. Although John’s two friends surfaced, John did not. After 15 minutes submerged, John’s lifeless body was recovered. Despite every effort to revive John, there were no signs of life. That is until his mother, played by Chrissy Metz, arrived and prayed over her son. To the astonishment of John’s

KIDS

entire medical team, a faint heartbeat was detected. That, though, is not where the story ends. No one was prepared for what followed, including John’s father, played by Josh Lucus. Watch what unfolds as the story continues. Stay for the credits and meet the real Smith family. This is a moving story not to be missed.

e have finally had a few great days for fishing with the big tides however the Easter break was not as good as we all hoped. Camping on the Ocean beach saw all campsites booked over the school holidays and lots of fish being caught. The gutters along the surfside are seeing lots of Whiting and Dart at 1st, 2nd, Campsites and 4th Lagoons. The Whiting are loving preserved beach worms and for the Dart, Pippies. We are also hearing of some good catches of Mackerel at The Bird Cage and along the surfside of Bribie Island, they are using Pilchards as bait.

Whiting and Bream at Red Beach with Live Blood worms for bait. You can also try your luck at White Patch where we are seeing Flathead, Bream so you will need Mullet fillets for the Flathead, Live blood worms for the Bream.

Just remember if you are wanting to catch Snapper

It won’t be long now and the tailor will be biting again as our waters begin to get a little cooler they are already being caught in the mouth of the Brisbane River. I must say we cannot complain about the weather over the May Day long weekend with lots of people up the surfside fishing in the gutters that are all the way along our beach.

Ningi Creek has seen some good catches of Whiting, Grunter Bream and flathead just off the bank so grab a pack of Live Blood Worms. One angler said that he fished with one worm for 2 hrs and catching 4 fish. You can also get some good size mud crabs Ningi creek and Banksia canals grab some Mullet heads and you will be sure to get a feed. Grunter Bream caught in Ningi Creek by Elijah of Ningi

MEDIA RELEASE

Dear Stakeholder I am writing to advise you that the Queensland Government has implemented new management changes to protect gastropods and bivalve molluscs in Moreton Bay. Fishing pressure directed at gastropods and bivalve molluscs in Moreton Bay has increased significantly in recent years resulting in concern about sustainability of key species (mud ark, mud whelks and cockles). Public consultation on urgent management changes was undertaken in late 2018 given the vulnerability of key species to overharvesting and limited compliance with current possession limits.

Yours sincerely, Bernadette Ditchfield Deputy Director-General Fisheries and Forestry

he inland track is still firm but starting to get muddy in places. The wetlands are filling following recent rains and are looking fantastic, don’t forget the insect repellent there is lots of sand flies and Mozzies about. Bribie Island’s rich natural diversity has drawn people to its shores for thousands of years, Local aboriginal people (Gubbi Gubbi) used the plentiful seafood and coastal resources for many generations. Evidence of their traditional life is

present in many places on Bribie Island, today’s national park camping areas are located on sites traditionally used by aboriginal people for similar reasons—easy access, plentiful fishing, protected campsites and an uninterrupted view of the surrounding land and seascapes. Bribie Island formed over thousands of years from sand settling on top of a pumice stone plate that runs under the Island at a depth of 4 to 5 meters, sand accretion and erosion continue to shape our island, access is prohibited past the Fort Bribie’s

Northern searchlight, due to sections of dangerously soft sand. Our island has a maximum elevation of fewer than 10 metres it’s highest points being Whitepatch and Mt Bribie. The island’s western side or passage side including Gallagher Point, Poverty Creek and lighthouse reach, all comprise sand and mud mangrove covered tidal flats, great for catching a muddie.

On the dunes, you’ll find coastal she-oaks, acacias, banksias and beach spinifex to picnic under, don’t drive to close as these trees that stabilise the dune system by trapping sand and reducing erosion. The lagoons just behind ocean beach provide another ideal setting for a relaxing picnic, you’ll

worms, pipis and other small animals. Departing around April they are flying thousands of kilometres to breeding areas in Alaska, China and Siberia, the reason much of the Island is covered under a RAMSAR convention agreement. Other birds of prey including sea eagles, brahminy kites and whistling kites are often seen along the Ocean Beach. Bribie Island has accommodated varied uses including grazing, a lighthouse, native timber harvesting, exotic plantations, resource extraction, beekeeping, quarantining, sand mining and recreational pursuits.

Lagoon today As much as Fort Bribie has wartime significance so too does Sandstone Point. Previously called Pebble Beach and before that Toorbul Point, American troops trained here (RAN 5) alongside our Army and Navy amphibious forces under General Macarthur for an assault in New Guinea, the point sported mock ships for training. Rumour had it that US troops couldn’t pronounce “Toorbul”, it came out as “Terrible” Point. Troops were on rotation to RAN 3,4,5 and Fort Bribie (RAN 2). We have so much history to see - do some exploration!

YOUR SAY roundabout then indicate left as you exit.

RANTS & RAVES

Dear Editor

There recently have been a number of letters regarding the future development of building heights on the Island and The Sandstone Point Hotel and their entertainment packages. Regarding The Sandstone Point Hotel which not only is it there for good, like it or not, it probably gives several hundreds of local people jobs, gives thousands pleasure with entertainment most weekends and if nothing else by causing some traffic disruption will be a major factor in getting better access to the Island, probably more so and quicker than any politicians. Just think it is only half developed as there are plans for a hotel and a shopping centre yet, the problem is not the development but the lack of concern by the planners of infrastructure who wait for the problem to happen rather than plan for the likely problems in advance. With regards to the three extra days a year allowed for entertainment at the hotel as far I could tell over three hundred locals signed a petition demanding no increase in entertainment especially at the weekends, and it is likely that some probably were not even from Sandstone Point as in any petition there is a group who would object to anything, which I believe leaves around 20,000 local residents who didn’t object, a great number of which probably go there 76

regularly and have a good time, perhaps they should let themselves be heard as well. As far as height restrictions on buildings I cannot see any problems with a five or six story limit, we already have several including the one at The Bribie Golf Club which certainly doesn’t look out of place and at six stories I doubt whether we will ever have a ‘Gold Coast’ on our hands, there also has to be land available which is never likely to happen either except the odd block. The major looming crisis is going to involve the development at Spinnakers where there is a development of over a hundred units plus the finishing of the retirement village is underway which means around another three hundred vehicles using this junction daily and I haven’t seen any suggestions on any road changes here, this should be fun. Philip Arlidge, Banksia Beach Dear Editor We have many roundabouts on Bribie to facilitate traffic flow, motorists just need to use them correctly, particularly when indicating. 1. When turning left, use your left indicator as you approach and enter the roundabout and continue to use your left indicator as you exit. 2. When turning right, indicate right as you approach and enter the

www.thebribieislander.com.au

3. When going straight ahead there is no need to use your indicator as you approach and enter the roundabout but when you’re ready to exit, indicate left. If practicable, a driver driving in a roundabout must give a LEFT change of direction signal when leaving the roundabout. Obviously, once you’ve exited, cease indicating and observe all other rules for roundabout use. If we always used our indicators regardless of whether we think another vehicle is in the vicinity, roundabouts might have a better chance of fulfilling their purpose. Regards, D Burt Dear Editor Read with interest Barry Clarke’s article last week. There have been several accidents this year alone, and we are only in April, and each time the bridge has been closed for several hours. We all hope that we are not depending on the Bridge to be accessible should any of us have a heart attack or any other life-threatening issues when these accidents occur. The people of Redcliffe have been extremely lucky with the Mayor for Moreton Bay Council living in their area. They have not only had a railway line extended to their area but they have had a second bridge built in their area. A second Hornibrook Bridge when for all intents and purposes, there was/ is nothing wrong with the one they already had access to. To “fix” the Bribie Island road, as suggested by Simone Wilson, will not alleviate the traffic issues

we residents face as all that will do is move the problem up the road to the bridge area for crossing to the island. At weekends the traffic is at its worst. Two lanes into one lane cause a lot of angst and usually by the time the drivers get to the caravan park near the boat launching turnoff, patience is quite short and giving way to each other does not happen seamlessly. When a decision is finally made it will be years in the making and we all hope we live long enough to see a second bridge. Yours sincerely, Jillian Dingwall. Dear Editor Before we get a new bridge, we need to improve the infrastructure ON Bribie. The current main roads cannot handle the weekend traffic, and large numbers with all the diesel fumes they bring, (not to mention their plastic garbage) are polluting our beautiful home. We need a toll for visitors which is sufficiently high to deter most of them. H.Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Editor Your community involvement in providing the news always just gets better. So many visitors to our Island take great delight in taking the Bribie Islander home with them to demonstrate the value of our Island home. I am often posting the articles to Rotary, and forwarding to Rotarians around the world to enlighten them of the way in which the words of Anne Matthews (Rotarian and Wordsmith extraordinaire’) highlight the Rotary Calander for Bribie Island. the Polio

Survivors and Associates Rotary Action Group and the Worlds Greatest Meal gather momentum and Anne is leading the way in words and action. As a survivor of Polio and the facilitator for Bribie Island and Surround Spinal Life Australia network, I see that life can be traumatic as we live with our disability and give consideration to the diversity of our community. Thank you Bribie Islander for your commitment. William (Bill) Peacock OAM Dear Editor This is a version of an email sent today to Cr. Brooke Savage relating to the Verifact traffic control near the bridge. “I am a bit concerned about the waste of Council money on the Verifact crew providing traffic control for pedestrians near the Bribie Island bridge.

Dear Editor Regarding your story about the Warrigals in 1980 A side coached by Gary Waldon (waldo) won the B grade metropolitan presidents cup and the grand final the team only lost 1 game that year we were a mixture of young locals a few lower grade players from Brisbane that geld together and played some great footy. Thank you for your time. Graeme Brown Dear Editor Yesterday I rode down to Kakadu bird hide and was horrified to see there were no migratory birds there. Today day I read an article by Marjory Webber, saying that thousands of birds at Toorbul were feeding up before leaving on their long flight north.

Does this mean that the fireworks at Sandstone Point have already driven them away? Our council was bribed to allow this preserved bushland to be used for the hotel. Now they have driven our pelicans away too. When will this criminal activity cease? H.Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Editor In reference to Barry Clark’s article in the 26th.April issue. To my way of thinking, the real problem with The Bribie bridge and Bribie Road started with the opening of The Sandstone Point Tavern. Unfortunately, Bribie businesses do not benefit from the influx of visitors,

Where to Eat... What to Do...

I go for an early morning walk past the spot every day. Verifact has been there now for around eight weeks and is setting up each morning before 5 am. The daylight hours now are getting shorter and shorter. It is still dark at 5 am. Therefore Verifact’s daily hours of engagement should be reduced by an hour to reflect these changing circumstances. There is no reason for them to be sitting in the dark with no useful work to do.

especially at weekends. Some visitors who come to the Island simply come for a look after spending up big at the tavern. When there is a major event there the Bribie Road as we all know is a nightmare. The Bribie Road needs to be widened which should have been done before the Tavern was approved then we need to somehow find the money for a whole new wider bridge which would need to be higher in the centre than the existing one to allow for higher boats to pass under safely. As for a toll on the existing bridge I am all for it as long as it is affordable for Families.

This is set to continue another eight weeks or so. I have calculated a saving to the ratepayers of $36,960.00 if the cost of this Verifact service is indeed $660 an hour. Also, I think it is about time we had a lady mayor to straighten the place up a bit. :) Name witheld by request

BUILDING OUR ECONOMY. SECURING YOUR FUTURE. The Liberal National team has built a stronger economy and turned around Australia’s budget. A stronger economy is the reason we’re able to deliver on our plan to:

1

Create 1.25 million more jobs over the next five years.

2

Maintain budget surpluses and pay down Labor’s debt.

3

Deliver lower taxes for small businesses and families.

4

Guarantee increased investments for schools, hospitals and roads.

5

Keep Australians safe and our borders secure.

The Liberal Nationals are lowering taxes for families and making it easier for small businesses to create new jobs. We’ve guaranteed Medicare’s services, we’re investing billions in making new medicines available, and we’re fixing local roads. Funding for the Caboolture Hospital health service has gone up by 61% under the Liberal National Coalition. And funding for our local schools has never been higher. The Liberal National Government is guaranteeing the essential services that local families rely on. We’re on the path to an even stronger economy – now is not the time to turn

back. That’s why I’m asking for your support at this election. Yours sincerely,
