THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY AT PLAY

O

ur cover story this issue focuses on the great work carried out by our volunteers at the Bribie Island Surf Club and has been written by one of their club members, Bec Turner. Reading through Bec’s contribution I was struck by the importance and emphasis that she placed on the family involvement at the club. In Bec’s own words: “ Why I love this sport so much is because it is so family orientated. I race with my sister I drive the boat and she crews the boat. Mum comes down to watch and often helps out with the team managing. Not only do I get to race with her but I patrol with her too! It’s kind of forced time together but I love it.” Bec also touches on the wider family that she has come to know as her fellow club members. And when you have a look at the broader society today one of the most prevalent

concerns from family members—mainly parents, but also children—is that they don’t spend enough quality time together. One of the very best ways for family members to spend time with one another is by playing or being involved in a sport together. Furthermore, the benefits of playing sports— generally and compared to other ways of socializing— are remarkable. Just consider the benefits of playing sports with family members! For a low cost, working around any schedule, including every family member, and while getting extra exercise, families can spend valuable time together with sports. It’s hard to dispute the importance and impressiveness of these points. So if you are looking for closer family connections remember the importance of the family at play.

Issue #88 is significant in a number of ways. In Chinese culture, the number eight is traditionally associated with good fortune and the number 8 has long been regarded as the luckiest number in their culture. So how lucky is number 88 with two eights? Well for me personally it is a year since I joined owner and publisher Richard Whetlor at The THE BRIBIE ISLANDER (Magazine) IS DELIVERED TO HOMES AND BUSINESSES IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Bribie Island all suburbs, Sandstone Point, Sandstone Lakes, Spinnaker Marina, Godwin Beach, Ningi, Bribie Pines, Peel Rd and Beachmere. OUT AND ABOUT

WORKING BEE KEEPS TRAINS RUNNING ON TIME I t takes a fair amount of work to keep a rail network function at its optimum. Just ask the bosses at QR! So spare a thought for the fellas who made up the Melsa park working bee last Saturday which included mowing, blowing and general tidying up to make ready for the public running on the following day. These mini-train rides on the third Sunday of each month are always a popular attraction and operate from approximately 10am until early afternoon at MELSA Park on Toorbul Street in Bongaree. According to Col Farrell the boys did a really good job, all this and cleaning toilets too, its all got to be done. The photos say it all. Anyone who would like to find out more about becoming a member of the club is welcome to call Col Farrell on 0439 822059 or come along on running days.

COVER STORY

FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY

B

By Bec Turner

ribie Island Surf Club is located on the Eastern Side of the island and is the closest surf beach to Brisbane. Woorim beach is particularly well known for its well protected, safe, and very popular swimming environment. Like most other beaches in Queensland, Woorim can experience strong currents, inshore holes, and can be susceptible to blue bottle stings in strong north-easterly conditions. Our advice is always to swim between the flags and always when patrolled. Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club has a longstanding patrolling history at Woorim Beach that dates back to the 1920’s. The club has a large and very successful junior activities section, we like to call these our future lifesavers, that range from the age of 6-13 years old. These juniors spend their weekends

10

developing their confidence in the surf and on the sand. The senior side of club is equally as successful and you will find them mastering their skills in the water, on the sand, and in competition. When they aren’t perfecting their surf safety skills, you will find them on the beach yearly from September to the very last weekend of April. Surf Life Saving is a relatively inexpensive sport to participate in. However, we rely heavily on funding from the government and the public to keep our flags up and flying. My role at the club is an active patrolling member. I do help as an IRB coach alongside Matthew Bull who is the senior main coach of our team. I have been volunteering for 15 years now and I started my journey with Surf Life Saving in nippers. In that time, I have managed to gain 46 different nationally

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

recognised awards that I am able to use within and outside of the club. These opportunities that lifesaving have given me have taken me to some pretty incredible places outside of the surf club. The sport I participate in mainly is IRB racing (inflatable rescue boat racing). These are the orange inflatable boats that you see on the beach. The idea around the sport is to further perfect our rescue skills in often

high-pressure situations. It allows us to race against other surf clubs wanting to also further perfect their skills. It puts us in a similar high-pressure situation to one that we would experience in a rescue. The equipment we use is the exact same equipment that you see us use on the beach. Just to give you an example of the cost of keeping this kind of equipment operational; a boat costs roughly $13,000,

Wright’s Fruit Barn

OPEN 7 DAYS:

MON-SAT: 7am to 5:30pm, SUN: 7am to 4pm.

Next to Macdonald’s

1 Coolgarra Avenue, Bongaree. Ph (07) 3408-1179 a motor costs about $6000, $300 out of the box prop and a further $600 to fine tune them, $100+ for the fuel to run the boat for an entire weekend. So just to have one boat on the beach you are looking at an upfront cost of $20,000 and this money comes primarily from grants or donations to the surf club. We have a lot of equipment that we need on the beach to be operational we use, radios, ATV’s, 4wd’s, signs, flags, boards, tubes, uniforms, and the use and up-keep of the amenities. As you can imagine, if a single boat costs $20,000 to be operational, trying to keep everything mentioned operational is no small or cheap feat. I guess what I am trying to say, is that you get back from lifesaving what you put into it. I have spent 15 years of my life standing on the water’s edge voluntarily. In that time, I have performed more rescues than I have fingers to count and prevented even more than that from happening. I’ve met people that I would now call family and I’ve got a place I can go to that I can call home. I have gained skills and awards that I am able to use to help people on and off the beach that most people only dream of gaining. I give up my weekends every year to either help keep the beaches safe or continuing to perfect

my skills and there isn’t a thing in the world that would change that. Why I love this sport so much is because it is so family orientated. I race with my sister I drive the boat and she crews the boat. Mum comes down to watch and often helps out with the team managing. Not only do I get to race with her but I patrol with her too! It’s kind of forced time together but I love it. You’ll find many stories like this within our team. Our team manager, Greg Bulluss is a father to another one of our crewies Georgie Bulluss. Selene Wooton’s mum will often stay with the team and will help cook and keep the team healthy. Alexander Cybulski’s mum Rhonda Cybulski and sister Nadia Cybulski both official at our carnivals and his dad George Cybulski helps to set up and pack up all of the carnivals. Then we have the rest of the team’s parents that spend their entire day standing on the beach supporting us, It really is a family affair at our carnivals! To get involved you can contact the club by calling (07) 3408 1188 or email bribiesc@bigpond. com. For more information, you can visit our website www.bribieislandsurfclub. com.au or we’ve even set up a new instagram page that can keep the public up to date on what we are doing its handle is @bribie_irb.

RIDE FOR RED SUCCESS NOT DAMPENED BY RAIN

very wet Saturday did not deter the Gronks Social Riders club

from running their Third Annual Ride for Red raising much-needed funds to

support Cancer Council Queensland in their quest to cure cancer.

Whilst the rain tumbled down at lunchtime the ride to Toogoolawah was mostly dry for an overnight stay and fundraising auction and raffles. Funds raised combining raffles, auctions and donations along with donations made online through the Do-It-For-Cancer fundraising page totalled $7021.00, a mammoth achievement with having set the goal of $6,000.00.

Tara Evans (left) with Gronks Social Riders Club and event organisers Helen Weir (middle), Gary Blake (right). Mr Gary Blake of the Gronks Social Riders Club said: “Today was very gratifying to see the support from the community. We decided to hold an annual ride after a very good mate (Red) passed away from brain cancer to assist in some way towards the cure of cancer. Each year we have surpassed the previous year and the Ride for Red will continue for many years to come. The support from businesses and the community continues to grow and without their help, a successful event would not be possible, and for that, we thank each and every-one helping to find a cure for this insidious disease.”

One of the participants in the ride was Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke from the Somerset Regional Council. Cheryl thanked the organisers, Gary Blake and Helen Weir, “It was such a warm and personal ride to commemorate a dear departed friend. The ride provides Red’s family and friends with even more treasured memories and also funds to help combat brain cancer.” The Ride for Red is an annual event and is held on the same long weekend in May every year and the Gronks Social Riders Club extends the invitation to anyone who would like to get involved in supporting the Cancer Council in finding a cure for Cancer.

COMMUNITY

PEBBLE BEACH FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS FARMERS By Bev Young

O

ur small community at Pebble Beach Retirement Village at Sandstone Point held our once yearly Fundraiser on Thursday the 9th of May. This year we directed our support to ‘Queensland C.W.A. WINELANDER By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au

I

f you want to see the colour drain from a winemaker’s face just mention the word Phylloxera, this is an aphid-like root louse that destroys grapevines and devastated over 70% of Europe’s vineyards, notably France, towards the end of the 19th century. It was introduced to Europe by botanists in Victorian England who collected specimens of American vines in the 1850’s. Phylloxera is native to North America where the native grape varieties are partially resistant, by contrast, the European wine grape varieties were very susceptible to the louse and the vineyards in Britain then Europe were devastated almost wiping out nearly two-thirds of all of the European vineyards or around 6 million acres

22

of vines. In France one of the desperate measures by grape growers was to bury a live toad under each vine to draw out the ‘poison’, this sounds familiar, doesn’t it! The industry in Europe started again when resistant rootstock was brought from America and grafted onto the existing vines but it still rears its ugly head from time to time.

Here in Australia Phylloxera first appeared in Geelong in 1877, then New South Wales in 1884, and Queensland in 1910 destroying vineyards and devastating the industry. South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania had banned the movement of vine material and remained disease-free and this banning of the movement of cuttings and other materials remains in force today which is why some of the vines in South Australia are

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

claimed to be amongst the oldest wine producing vines in the world. Phylloxera infestation cannot be successfully cured and replanting is the only option and is very expensive. In 2017 Vinehealth Australia calculated the cost at $60,000 per hectare, the pest has not been entirely eradicated and there are several areas such as The Yarra Valley have been declared a Phylloxera infested Zone and great care has to be taken in these regions when growing grapes. Talking of Queensland it is not commonly known that after planting vines in Farm Cove New South Wales Captain Arthur Phillips chose the Granite Belt region as the second area to be planted with grape vines in 1820 preceding Victoria and South Australia by more than 15 years. One of the problems which hold

the region back is the large number of small wineries in the area without proper representation at the retail level and who survive by promoting their products at cellar door and mail order, which was a similar case in Western Australia some forty years ago, until the larger wineries became popular and then tourism took off, the rest they say is history and Margaret River now boasts some of the finest wineries in Australia and is responsible for over 30% of Australia’s premium wine production whilst accounting for only around 10% of the country’s total wine production. Queensland’s oldest working vineyard is Ballandean Estate Wines which has been in the Cardillo and Puglisi family for more than 80 years and they have high hopes for this year’s vintage despite climate challenges throwing up a warmer and

WINELANDER and is bottled without drier season, but the region filtering or fining as was was still cooler than other the case in the distant past, wine growing areas around allowing Scott’s winemaking the country. talents to shine through. The Granite Belt also excels in alternative styles and while it produces mainstream varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay it is also growing Fiano, Vermentino, Chenin Blanc, Savagnin, Barbera, Graciano, Durif, Nebbiolo and Tannant. Being at an altitude of over 750 metres the climate in Ballandean is both cool and continental which accounts for the successful growing of many European grape varieties.

For the last thirteen years, there has been a competition which recognises the talents of young winemakers and known as ‘The Young Gun” of wine. Andrew Scott of La Petit Mort Winery secured the first ever final 12 places for Queensland and he will compete for the title ‘Young Gun of the Year’ which will be held in Adelaide on June 3rd. La Petit Mort is a part of The Bent Road Wine Family in Ballandean and specialises in producing small batch experimental wines with minimal winemaking intervention

Due to the difficulties of the growing conditions around the country this year the grape crush in January is expected to be around 5% down which is quite significant given that the annual crush is around $4.4 billion dollars, Ballandean Estate is expecting a reduction of 30% but the quality looks like it could be amazing, however decisions will have to be made where the wines are going to go. This week we tried a couple of wines from Liquorland, a Devil’s Lair Fifth Leg 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot which at $10 instead of $18 was excellent drinking. Dan Murphy had the floor special Barwang Shiraz 2017 $15 for two bottles, which is half price, on the members’ card or available if you purchased 6 bottles of anything else, again outstanding value from The McWilliams Wine Company.

REGULAR FEATURE Photo Credit: Nikita Chee but just drove through some streets branching off Bribie Island road I’d not been down before. At the beginning of the drive, I didn’t even have the energy to look at mum when she spoke or look around at the beautiful scenery. I just stared blankly out the window looking at whatever fell into my direct view. Joyful eh?

THE PURSUIT OF PEACE A

few Wednesdays ago I woke up in a terrible mood. I can’t remember

the specific reason why, but I do remember feeling overall a dull shade of grey. My usual things that bring me happiness just weren’t

sparking as they would do normally so my mother being heaven sent - decided to take me on a drive. We didn’t reach a destination

Anyway by the time we reached home again I was feeling a tad lighter and seeing all the properties and their gardens made me want to spend time with my plants nurturing them. I have a collection of tropical and indoor plants which usually have big leaves. The leaves catch dirt, fluff and sometimes pests so I thought I’d spent the next little while cleaning each individual leaf with water and a Chux and applying

white oil for protection and sheen. I put on some calming nature music and away I went. As each hour went by I could feel my spirit lifting once again. The slow process of paying close attention to the leaves steadied my thoughts and the beauty of plants and their unique markings filled my soul with colour. Three hours went by and the process was complete. Not only were my babies looking healthy and clean but I felt back to normal and happy again! I’ve always loved plants and gardening but that little moment made me appreciate them just that little bit more. I suppose my dear Islanders, I’m realizing that pursuing peace doesn’t have to be some mega mission. It’s in the simple cost-free things that peace

can be found in plenty. Moreover, and maybe not so liked, it can be found in discipline. Repetitious, focused, diligent discipline. There is a necessary place where happiness can be found in fun. But it is in the everyday healthy hardworking simple habits of life that steady joy rests in. When we put our lives into balance (and we all know our areas we need to work on) then peace arrives into our hearts. Our breathing is steady and deep, thoughts align, eyes close with relief and a gentle smile emerges.

BUSINESS NEWS

LOCAL BUSINESS REALLY CLEANS UP

I

t’s easy to see why Allen Higgison, owner of AL’s Gutter Cleaning, has a growing fan base of customers who rave about him and his team’s great work.

You only have to spend a little time with Allen to discover that he is the real deal when it comes to someone who knows and understands what his business is all about. And Allen’s business is all about cleaning and not just any general cleaning work. As the company name suggests Allen’s business is about cleaning and clearing gutters but they have also successfully expanded their service offering into a number of specialist cleaning areas. These areas include solar panel cleaning, commercial and domestic window cleaning and even mirrors! Allen proudly points out that he has been a resident of Bribie along with his wife and four children for almost 30 years. His reputation as an honest, reliable, friendly and a very approachable person has seen Allen win work from local residents through to government and private businesses both on and off-Island. “Being a local, I know the area well and want to ensure every job is completed in a timely and safe manner,” says Allen. “For our customers’ peace of mind, we are fully insured, utilise safe working procedures, use pure H2O methods for cleaning of Solar Panels and Windows (Streak free) and have the 28

latest vacuum systems with NO mess,” he said.

much vegetation is growing nearby.

Allen says that the business is fully insured for Public Liability, Personal Injury, Vehicle and Equipment. He also says that he has a Queensland police check for all employees as well as a Construction white card and Building and Asset Services (BAS) Registration and Induction, for all employees.

Residential and Commercial Window Cleaning

A stickler for doing things properly Allen also says he has Working at Heights tickets, Cert IV Workplace Health and Safety, Safe work Methods and procedures and SDS for chemicals used. Gutter Cleaning Allen said from his long experience he has seen first hand that debris-clogged guttering can cause roof leaks and/or water damage to the interior or exterior of customers’ homes.

According to Allen windows are one of the first things that anyone notices when entering a home or business. “Whether you would like just the outside front windows cleaned or a full inside and out total clean Al’s Gutter Cleaning is here to assist our customers. All windows are cleaned from the ground up to 3 stories, so no need for the use of ladders,” said Allen. Solar Panel Cleaning Allen says that customers who have made a large investment in their solar system should make sure they look after it by having the panels cleaned at least once a year. He says the lower the tilt of the panels the more regular the cleaning should be. “Pollution, traffic dust, leaves and even bird droppings contribute to preventing sunlight from reaching the solar cells in your solar panels,” he said.

Cleaning debris from gutters “Gutters are an integral piece of your home’s plumbing. They serve to control the flow of rainwater to protect your roof, walls, foundation and landscaping. It is vital that gutters remain clear of such debris” he said. Allen said it is a good idea to get your gutters checked at least once if not twice a year depending on how

“The more dirt – the lower amount of electricity they will produce up to 25% 30% loss in output. While

Cleaning glass louver windows many factors affect how much electricity your solar panels will produce – dirty solar panels can be one of the biggest, and easiest to fix. “At Al’s Gutter Cleaning we use 100% De-Ionization Water Filtration and equipment to leave customers’ panels stain free. There are no harsh chemicals used in cleaning the panels and all of the equipment used is the latest unique environmentallyfriendly telescopic reachand-wash cleaning system.” Allen says that this means perfect cleaning results and scratch free brush ensuring a crystal clear result every time without the worry of any damage to the customers’ panels. He said most panels can be cleaned from the ground up to 3 stories, no need to climb on to roofs. If you are looking for a regular or once off solar panel or window cleaning service Al’s Gutter Cleaning will come to you from just $7.50 per panel. So if it’s cleaning you need contact Al’s Gutter Cleaning by calling Allen on 0438 909 120.

BUSY FINGERS By Sandra

RUBBISH DUMPING

I just can’t understand these lazy people who continue to use us as a dumping ground. At approximately 1.30 am, a person drove up on the footpath and proceeded to dump 2 filthy, urinesoaked mattresses, later that morning it rained and these mattresses became very heavy and disgusting to handle. Our volunteers should not have to deal with these problems, but they do it to help us and the community. As I have stated before when our gates are shut, the footpath area belongs to the council not Busy Fingers, so you are dumping illegally and the council can prosecute and fines will apply. Due to this final dump, the management will now report all out of hours dumping to the council and will supply them with security footage. PLEASE think of your fellow residents who give their time to support the island, helping us raise funds that are used to enhance the quality of life of island residents. PLEASE take your rubbish to the dump yourself, we already have two large green bins emptied every week at great expense, money that could be used more productively on the island. Our vehicle

BARGAINS

Please be aware that the last week of each month we will be having our “Fill a basket of clothing for $5”, this will continue until further notice. Any other bargains and discounted items will be written up daily on the Blackboard as you enter the shop. As the cooler months are approaching the clothing racks will have more winter clothes than summer clothes, but we will continue to have a wide variety of summer clothes available throughout the winter months. We have had problems selling on lounges and large wall units over the last few months, these items take up a lot of valuable floor space. Therefore, it has been decided to only accept a lounge or wall unit once the

CHANGES TO COUNTER

We wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused last week when we had to rope off part of the area around the front counter. The counter required muchneeded changes, allowing us to display a lot more jewellery and delicate items. We have moved the glass cabinet that used to be on the left as you entered the front door; this has opened up the entrance and made it easier to go straight to the electrical and kitchen areas.

DONATIONS GIVEN THIS MONTH Over the month we have given many donations across the island including the following:Croquet Club required 2 sun/ weather shelters. Diabetes Support can now send 20 children to the education camps. Toc H required several safety repairs including replacing the back stairs. Banksia Beach School now has new sensory equipment for their Special Education Project. A Play Centre for the Baptist Hall grounds for the use of all groups on the island and those who use the hall. Linen for Boronia Cottage Respite, and repairs to the old cottage in Renton Street used by the Amateur Fishing group, also medical equipment for the BI Aged Care to name a few. We could not support these groups without the support of all the island residents who donate their pre-loved items and our customers, we thank you all.

REQUEST FOR PRESENTATIONS AND DONATIONS

If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance please

let us know. We try to assist all not for profit associations and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@ bigpond.com if you wish to have a presentation or if you wish to apply for a grant of assistance. When applying for assistance please include a contact name and phone number and also a current equipment quote, tell us a bit about your association/ club and membership and why you need the equipment you are requesting. Please be aware we only deal with island associations and groups, not individuals.

THE LOSS OF A DEAR FRIEND

Over the last few years I have continually thanked our dear friend Mavis Howard who used to give up some of her valuable time to make up the children’s lucky dip bags. These bags were greatly received by the children, and Mavis used to ensure we had plenty on hand during the school holidays. Children staying with their grandparents used to come in for games and puzzles to keep them occupied and they used to also get a bag for the surprises inside. We were advised by Mavis’s family that Mavis had passed away recently, we send our condolences to her family and we sincerely thank Mavis for all her efforts and support over the years, she will be sadly missed by all at Busy Fingers. As usual, I wish to thank the Bribie Islander Family for all the support they have given us over the years. Hope to see you in the shop soon. Sandra

BUSINESS NEWS

NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR ESTABLISHED LOCAL BUSINESS

“W

hen one door closes another opens” is an appropriate way to introduce the formation of a new business partnership between longtime Bribie residents Robert Cazalet and John Clifford.

Robert Cazalet (R) welcomes John Clifford as equal partner in the business

Robert would be familiar to many residents on the Island as the driving force behind his business Robert’s Driveway Restoration since 2002 while John’s work history, spanning over many years on Bribie, has seen him in daily contact with people in a variety of roles at a number of local businesses including, until its abrupt closure, Banksia Beach Medical Centre. “When Robert, heard about my circumstances when the medical practice suddenly closed and offered me the chance to buy a fifty percent partnership in the business I jumped at the opportunity,” said John.

years and knew that he could work well with John on an equal partnership basis in the business. “We have renamed the business ‘Superior Driveway Restorations & More...’ which pretty much describes what we can offer homeowners and commercial businesses by way of driveway restoration, seamless polymer flake flooring for concrete floor surfaces plus other building and home restoration services, given all the specialist equipment we have at our disposal,” said Robert.

Robert said that he has known John and his family for the past twenty

Robert and John see a bright future in their business as more homeowners and business owners recognise that keeping up the presentation and protecting their building assets is a real return on their property investment. “John and I believe the future is very bright for our business as there is always a market for quality workmanship. John’s enthusiasm in the business and his genuine interest in customer satisfaction is something that cannot be taught. We work very well together which is important,” said Robert.

NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO SEAL YOUR DRIVEWAY

Between now and November is the best time to seal your driveway according to Robert Cazalet co-owner of ‘Superior Driveway Restorations & More...’. “Summer is just too hot for the concrete sealer to set to the standard that I like,” said Robert. With “way too many years to count” experience Robert’s expertise in the power cleaning and driveway sealing industry is second to none. Driveway restoration can add immediate value and streetscape appeal

From paints to concrete seal, Robert says they use the best possible grade products which enables them to provide a genuine warranty on the workmanship. “Preparation is everything. Prepping up right and putting down right is very important whereas a lot of DIYers put the seal on too fast, giving it a milky colour and it generally starts to crystalise and peel,” he said. That’s where DIY projects don’t match the expertise of ‘Superior Driveway Restorations & More...’

Seamless polymer flake flooring adds a real WOW effect to any room 36

NATURE In flight to try to obtain food and eventually through exhaustion and starvation hundreds of birds and their young perish in the harsh conditions.

WHERE ARE OUR PELICANS? R

By Marj Webber

ecently there has been quite a reduction in our Pelican population on Bribie Island. Where are they going? Will they come back? In central Australia there is a huge mass of water slowly making its way to the Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre Basin and from near the end of March the lake has been slowly filling with the waters dumped in the North from Cyclone Trevor. As the lake fills the waters fill with fish and aquatic life and vegetation becomes plentiful. Pelicans from all over Australia and as far away as PNG somehow get

the message and begin to fly to begin their breeding season. At the peak of the season there can be as many as 200 000 pelicans vying for nesting positions on the ground and on the islands on the lake. As they can breed at any time of the year the fact that winter is coming on should not be a deterrent. They don’t have a lot of time as Lake Eyre often does not stay full for long and the pelicans try to get as many broods as possible hatched and dispatched before the waters start drying up.

When they return it would be nice as a welcoming gesture to have new perches preferably over water installed on the bridge. Pelicans Resting

When the lake is full the water has the same salt content as the ocean but

Where the Pelican Builds. The horses were ready, the rails were down, But the riders lingered still,— One had a parting word to say, And one had his pipe to fill. Then they mounted, one with a granted prayer, And one with a grief unguessed. “We are going” they said, as they rode away— “Where the pelican builds her nest!” They had told us of pastures wide and green, To be sought past the sunset’s glow; Of rifts in the ranges by opal lit , And gold ‘neath the river’s flow. 38

as it dries up the salinity increases and the fish begin to die. Many Pelicans that have not flown back to their homes are caught out with young to care for and no food. The parents then have to fly long distances

The reason we don’t ever see baby pelicans on Bribie Island is because the pelicans breed so far away. I did see many juveniles some years ago after Pelicans had disappeared from the island for some time. When they came back they brought many almost fully grown juveniles with them. Maybe we will see more when they return this time.

And thirst and hunger were banished words When they spoke of that unknown West; No drought they dreaded, no flood they feared, Where the pelican builds her nest! The creek at the ford was but fetlock deep When we watched them crossing there; The rains have replenished it thrice since then And thrice has the rock lain bare. But the waters of Hope have flowed and fled, And never from blue hill’s breast Come back—by the sun and the sands devoured— Where the pelican builds her nest! Mary Hannay Foott (1846-1918)

NATURE Female Shoveller, Buckley’s Hole 56-67 mm long. When swimming they sit very low in the water so with the bright colours of the male they can be distinguished quite easily from other ducks. They are 45-54 cm in length and weigh 545-852g. Usually silent, Shovelers make soft sounds during the courting period. They are very cautious and tend to spend a lot of their time a distance from the shore. Shovelers are found from Cairns to Tasmania and inland, also in NZ mostly in areas where there is dense vegetation in the water. They are spread over a large area often in the company of other ducks but are mostly uncommon and nomadic.

AUSTRALASIAN SHOVELER – ANAS RHYNCHOTIS (RARE VISITOR) By Marj Webber

O

nly very occasionally will you see Australian Shovelers on Bribie Island but during the first few weeks of May two males and a female paid a visit to Buckley’s hole. I have only seen them twice during the time I have lived on Bribie Island. The last time was in March 2014 when

Shovelers stayed for several weeks and again at Buckley’s Hole. Males are quite colourful with blue, chestnut, black and white bodies and a grey-green head. Females are mottled brown with a little bit of blue on the wing. Probably their most noticeable feature is their large shovel shaped bill which is about

Their large shovel-shaped bills with grooves along the edges are used to filter insects, crustaceans and vegetation from the water. They swim in wide circles, upending every few metres to obtain their food using their bills in a dabbling action. Because of the shape and size of its bill they can only feed in water and are unable to source their food supply from the land.

Bottoms Up

Breeding takes place usually from August to November or at any time after rain. During courting hens are usually pursued by several drakes as there are more males than females in their population. Scuffles often break out amongst the pursuing males until a suitable one is eventually selected by the female. Nests which are lined with grass and down are usually on the ground and concealed in thick grass for safety. Nine to eleven creamy-white eggs are laid by the females which hatch after 25-26 days. Females are the sole incubators and carers for the young. Because of the females’ brownish colouring they are less likely to be spotted by predators. The young fledge after about 40-45 days and will begin their breeding life after 1-2 years.

Their main threat in Victoria, South Australia, ACT, and Tasmania is an open duck hunting season. As many as 8 species of duck are on the shoot list. Hundreds of thousands of ducks are killed and thousands injured in Victoria alone every year. In Victoria, Australian Shovelers are usually hunted every season but because of the extremely dry conditions for the past three years, they have been taken off the list for now. Males from a distance could be mistaken for Chestnut Teals which are on the list

and females could be mistaken for Pacific Black Ducks so they are still quite vulnerable. Not all shooters stick to the rules and many protected birds are shot. Duck hunting is banned in Queensland, NSW and W. Australia. John Latham first recorded the Australasian Shoveler in 1801. Australian Shovelers are quite rare throughout Australia but fairly common in SW Western Australia. Even so, they have been listed as not threatened. Shoveler, Buckley’s Hole

ROTARY

AT THE MOVIES! F

By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary

riends, Romans, Bribarians, lend me your ears. The great Shakespeare is coming to the Island. While some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them – he was the greatest of all time. He was the stuff that dreams are made on. As many may know, Bribie Rotary’s movie nights are legendary on our beautiful Island home. We hold them 3-4 times a year at Bribie Twin Cinemas and they are always a premier release. We usually fill both cinemas and our pre-movie “wine and cheese” is just so much more substantial. Club members provide sandwich platters, party pies, sausage rolls, sausages, cocktail frankfurters, devils on horseback, as well as wine - and Heather White’s marvellous punch. So you not only get to see a movie you can ‘Et Tu, Brute!’ Yes – our upcoming movie is about Shakespeare. Who among us has not studied a Shakespearean play or sonnet at some time in their lives? Four hundred years ago, the Bard wrote the original ‘blockbusters’ and today he is still considered to be the world’s greatest playwright. He wrote about life, death, love, revenge, jealousy, murder and grief. His plays fall into three categories: Histories - about the lives of kings and famous figures from history; Comedies - which end with marriage; and Tragedies - which end with the death of the main character. In fact, many words and phrases used for the first time in his plays are still in use today and are considered to be ‘invented’

42

by Shakespeare. For example amazement, unreal, zany, gossip, Olympian, champion, puking and fashionable to name a few. Dire Straits, Sting, Elton John, Taylor Swift and many other artists have used the Bards words, sayings and characters as a source of inspiration for their songs.

Wine and Cheese Prior to Screening, Lucky Door Prize Cost $20 Thursday 6th June, 2019

On 6 June 2019 our premier release movie is ‘All is True.’ Advertising describes it as a look at the final days of William Shakespeare’s life. The film stars Kenneth Branagh as Shakespeare, Judi Dench as Anne Hathaway and Ian McKellen as Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton. Shakespeare’s two narrative poems, ‘Venus and Adonis’ and ‘The Rape of Lucrece’ were dedicated to Southampton. Southampton was one of Shakespeare’s patrons and is identified as the ‘Fair Youth’ of his Sonnets. ‘All is True,’ which was the original title for ‘Henry VIII,’ begins in 1613, three years before Shakespeare’s death. After years of such creative, productive writing in London, the Globe Theatre, where his plays were performed, is destroyed by fire. Devastated over this loss, he retires to his home in Stratford-upon-Avon and to his neglected family. ‘The New York Times’

reviewer Jeanette Catsoulis wrote: ‘Yet while “All Is True” might not brim with excitement, it’s beautifully acted, richly photographed (by Zac Nicholson) and blessedly free of histrionics. Between them, Branagh and Elton [writer] have concocted a respectful story of loss, regret and wistful genius. Their Shakespeare is sad and a little weary, but far from beaten down, evidenced by the movie’s most pleasurable scene: An extended fireside chinwag between Will and his long-time crush, the Earl of Southampton (a wicked Ian McKellen). Whether all is true here is irrelevant: just watching these two old hands lovingly quote Sonnet 29 together feels right enough for me’ There is absolutely no obligation to do so, but if you would like to “Dress as your favourite Shakespearean character” there will be a prize for the best-dressed male and female. In Shakespearean times, women were not allowed to act on stage so all the female parts had to be played by boys. So if a boy comes dressed as

It is interesting to note that the surname Oxenford was first found in Oxfordshire UK where they held a family seat as ‘Lords of the Manor.’ Edward de Vere (no relation to Richard or Audrey), 17th Earl of Oxford, was a contemporary of Shakespeare and a patron of the arts. A poet and playwright in his own right. Edward has since become the strongest candidate in the Shakespearean authorship debate. But this debate is really just ‘much ado about nothing.’ So come - join us for an evening of Shakespearean delight. ‘The game’s afoot: follow your spirit, and upon this charge cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’ Seats are seldom empty nor given up. All members of the trio are classically trained, Beryl studying in Ipswich in the 50’s and Pam and Anne at the Qld Conservatorium of Music in the early 60’s. Pam then moved to Melbourne to follow a nursing career, and Anne moved to Sydney to follow an orchestral career and was a cellist in the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from 1973-1976. Pam and Anne met by sheer chance 20 years later in Nambour, and both gradually became part of the classical music circle in the Sunshine Coast. It was not long before Pam and Anne crossed paths with Beryl, who was the pianist for the Caloundra Chorale and Caloundra Theatre .... and our meeting was 33 years ago!!! “We love performing for our appreciative audiences,” said Anne. “The programmes consist mostly of popular light classics, with a well known serious classic popped here and there, along with violin and cello solos as well as

piano duets... and when appropriate, a humorous story or anecdote added which the audiences really love,” she said. Anne’s cello has a long history, as it was made in the year 1801 in the United Kingdom, Pam’s violin was bought here on the Sunshine Coast, for $5!!! discovered in an op shop in poor condition in an old violin case ...(the case looked better than the violin.) Pam took it along to a luthier who makes and repairs stringed instruments, and discovered the violin was a ‘Maggini’... so a few hundred dollars later, here it is ... what a find! The trio loves getting together to rehearse when required, with probably more chatting and peals of laughter going on than actual rehearsing. They really appreciate coming to play for the Bribie Island audience and they have gathered many fans here. Tickets are only $15 for adults and $5 for children which includes a light supper. POETRY control & abound, in ways that are not always sound. We look at them with a shake of our heads, for we have been there & still we are proud of the ways that they think & work as we did, to make life what it is, along the River of Life.

THE RIVER OF LIFE. A young Man & his wife strolled the banks of this River called LIFE. Just as this river started in a trickle, so did our lives form & mingle. The river twists & forms its way, just like this couple in every way. For life has its tricks as all of us know, the problems to be solved as their lives on go. I met my wife on a train in the rain, for it was wet as a flood in the city Domain. Both wet as a fish & cloaked up to suit, rain gear the disguise, it was not just a fluke. We talked all that trip & it went in a twice, she left at her stop. I had just met my Wife. We were young as is right & I awaited next night with great trepidation just for the sight of this young girl. I was sure would become my Wife. Would she be so kind to consider this young man to share the rest of her life? It turned out that way for she told me in time that this young man was the love of her life. The plans of the young are often astray & vary with time as life has its way. We married in time that was long to come, with lots of work that had to be done, for life is not simple no matter one tries, but sent to test us in ways that are trite, while we worked through these problems both day & by Night. Our Children did come as one would expect of love that had blossomed with work on both sides, our love to become our comfort in life. The joys of parent-hood are there to be found, as we mould the Life of our Children in ways that are sound. 46

MAD Poets

We are older than we were, that’s the way life works, wiser perhaps now that childhood has passed & hoping that life’s mistakes are well in the past.

We build on experiences both good & the bad to develop our off-springs to make one proud.

Our Love for each other is strong as ever, with family to tend to & guide without temper, with great memories that last as we go on together.

For that River of Life flows on as ways are found that one hopes will bear fruit in their space, just as ours has become the rock in its place! We grow old as life moves along, for we have done all for our Children, not always so sound. What we have done is less than the best, but we have done it our way so to hell with the rest. Our twilight is near & yet far away for we are that Family that goes on its way. The river of life is a thing of delight; its beauty is sublime just so is our life. Our Children themselves found our River of Life, their children in turn will experience the life that they chose, as is just & their right. For no Family itself can follow their Parents & do things their way, times change & Parents must know when to let things just lay. It has often been said that the young do not know how to raise their children these days, but think that years gone by, we to were those parents our self. We ambled our way with advice as required & made life our way! For families must work out the best that they can the ways to make life successful, never a Ban. These Children of our Children will grow with that River Of Life, just as we did & my God what a fright, those trials that we went through at times very rough. So our Children will have what many of us did not! Times change for good & for bad, but the river of Life goes on with the lives that flow along, as one is so proud of off- spring that delight & at times disappoint. Their lives are theirs to

The Bribie Islander

For Family life is important as ever, as one strives to be that person so clever, that in the folds of this Family that one holds secure are sound & forever the ones that are true. May the River of Life continue this way, for Families are life for ever & a day as we were once young & looking forward to a life that is shared with great love, our children & their Children, can now share this River, making it theirs to share & behold the wonders of life along this splendid river that I have called Life! LAUGH RIOT Never laugh at your wife’s choices..... you’re one of them! Life is short, smile while you still have teeth. Hearing voices in your head is normal. Listening to them is quite common. Arguing with them – acceptable. It is only when you lose that argument that you’re in real trouble. Of course, I have a talent. I’m really good in bed. Sometimes I sleep more than 9 hours in one go. A jellyfish has existed as a species for 500 million years, surviving just fine without a brain. That gives hope to quite a few people. I broke my finger last week, on the other hand, I’m OK. Someone stole my Microsoft Office and they’re gonna pay. You have my word.

e are a group of Christian Women representing the various churches on Bribie Island. We call ourselves “Focus on Fellowship” and basically that’s what we do. When we first came into being fifteen years ago now, we definitely decided that we did not wish for our group to be bogged down in fundraising, finances or money in any way. We don’t have have a President, Secretary or Treasurer. Our whole being is about collaborating and demonstrating ecumenicism and reaching out to the wider community of Bribie Island in peace and hope. We convene several functions a year and the Pre-loved Fashion Parade is an annual event attended

by more than three hundred people. The Parade which will be held on Friday 14th June at 10:30 am at the Church of the Little Flower, First Ave, Bongaree is not your normal Fashion Parade – as we endeavour to promote and showcase the “OP” shops on the Island. All funds raised through Op shops are generally spread throughout the community, with a variety of welfare and community programmes and services. The fashions are presented with a morning of fun, food, frivolity and fellowship. The models are from the different churches and are absolute amateurs. There is no charge to attend any of our functions all we ask is that folks bring along a small plate

These ladies showing their style on the catwalk at last year’s parade of food to share. Clothing is available for sale at the conclusion of the parade. We hold two morning teas a year in April and October and these are held in the different churches on a rotating basis. For further information contact Kay Benson Phone 3408 1058.

MORETON BAY HISTORY SEMINAR By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society

T

he Third annual Moreton Bay History Seminar was held at North Lakes last week attended by representatives of many regional History Societies and interest groups.

Bribie Island Historical Society was represented by President Graham Mills and Secretary Lynne Hooper, with other members assisting the display stall of historic Bribie items, photos, books and information. The material has been gathered in the Society’s comprehensive Database over the past 10 years and includes thousands of historic photos dating back 135 years. Some old photos in the Database collection were “tinted” or hand painted with very basic hand painting techniques many years ago. President Graham Mills has recently given presentations of old Bribie Postcards, some of which had been basically hand painted or coloured washed over 60 years ago,

The concept of seeing old Black and White Photos in a new light took the interest of Secretary Lynne Hooper, and the display included a small selection of comparative images, using modern Photoshop techniques.

GUEST SPEAKERS The History Seminar had three interesting guest speakers. Cara Downes from National Archives Australia presented the history of South Sea Islanders in Queensland. Often called “Sugar Slaves” these South Sea Islanders (Kanakas) were enticed or kidnapped (Blackbirding) to work on sugar plantations such as Morayfield Sugar Plantation at Caboolture and Day’s Sugar Mill and Plantation at Dayboro. Thom Blake gave a presentation on the history of Deception Bay and in particular about the prestigious Bancroft family. Dr Jennifer Harrison spoke about the upcoming bicentenary of the European discovery of the Brisbane River, which has a special connection with Bribie Island. It was three castaway convicts caught in a huge storm off Sydney in 1823 who drifted for weeks before eventually being washed ashore on Moreton Island. With the great help of the indigenous people, they made their way around the Bay and eventually crossed a “Big River” before

History Seminar coming to live with the natives on Bribie Island for many months. They believed they were south of Sydney and tried constantly to walk north in search of Sydney. It was John Oxley a year later in 1824, who had been sent to explore Moreton Bay, who made the surprise finding of “White” castaways on Bribie Island. It was they who led him to discover the Brisbane River and the subsequent establishment of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony. History is not always accurately and honestly recorded and Dr Harrison suggested it was time some Historical facts be checked. This is something the Bribie Historical Society is proud to say it regularly does, with improved access to National Library historical documents, first-hand accounts, and newspaper articles of the day.

BRIBIE IN A NEW LIGHT Some History group displayed current activities and Bribie’s exhibit was of enlarged black & white photos taken on Bribie between 1912 and 1949 with their newly coloured versions alongside. The trend to colouring vintage photos has been taken up by Bribie Historical Society Secretary, Lynne Hooper using Photoshop to bring colour to the black and white world of the last century. Pictured opposite are some examples of this technique. 48

MCKENZIE AGED CARE PET THERAPY By Jane Johnson

W

e have all felt the instant happiness when being greeted by our furry friends. Pets not only offer companionship but they have the ability to boost mental health and well-being. For the elderly, studies show that interacting with animals reduces feelings of anxiety, depression and can ease loneliness. Having regular social contact with animals provides a feeling of comfort, joy and can spark happy memories. Dogs and cats aren’t the only animals that provide these benefits for elderly residents. McKenzie regularly has visiting farm animals like horses and chickens and recently trialled PARO, a robotic baby harp seal with lifelike features

that responds to movement, touch and speech. For those living with dementia, it may mean experiencing some behavioural problems, mostly inability to deal with stress, the company of a pet can reduce overall stress but also help in calming a person down. For those residents with communication struggles, having an animal that senses emotions and also shows their own emotion, through body language, can be highly soothing. At McKenzie, we offer Pet Therapy across all of our homes and develop an individualised care plan for each resident in conjunction with family and carers. Together with our Lifestyle Team, we want to ensure you’re getting the best out of life in our communities. A DAY AT THE GRAND PRIX WITH STIRLING MOSS

By Helly Kemp

DAY TWO:

“Good afternoon,” I am greeted sharply as I come down to the breakfast room, just 7 minutes past our agreed meeting time of 9 am. However, Mossie does share his strawberry jam with me, so I assume I am forgiven. “Never eat breakfast at home,” he announces between mouthfuls. “I’m too afraid the night will come when a girl says ‘Switch off the light Darling before you undress.’ I couldn’t cope with that.” He is worrying about nothing. The way he sprints up and down steps should be enough to keep him trim. By the time I reach the car, he has the engine running and I am still in the middle of my bread and strawberry jam. We reach the Nuerburgring in record time, only to discover that the Ring has 52

REGULAR FEATURE mechanics – all part of an organized bedlam putting hasty last minute touches to their machines. Someone spots Mossie. Immediately it’s announced over the intercom that both Stirling Moss and Fangio are here. In a few hours, Jackie Stewart will have won the 1973 German Grand Prix. Yet the applause he receives then is equalled by what breaks out now. The crowd goes mad – hundreds of thousands clapping, yelling, stamping their feet. It is quite overpowering, bringing tears to my eyes and Mossie loves every minute of it. To get onto the track you need a special pass. I have one, but give it to my photographer for vital close-up shots. So stranded outside the barrier, oblivious that Mossie on the other side is trying to smuggle me his, I must look forlorn as the guard all of a sudden says, “Mitgehen lassen, das ist die Frau vom Moss,” and pushes me through. This isn’t the moment to deny I am Mrs Moss. So I’m on the track, officially sanctioned as ‘die Frau vom Moss.’ I still don’t know why, but at the end of the race, Mossie’s mood changes noticeably. He becomes silent (very rare) almost sullen. Nostalgia? Weariness? Frustration? Or perhaps even a little jealousy of Jackie Stewart in his laurels? I never find out. When I do try, for the first time he evades a direct answer. And I’m wondering just how important the limelight is to Mossie.

Excerpt of Letters from Stirling Moss Back in the car on the road to a dinner party with his friends, he again drives like a man who is afraid of nothing. But then I let out a blood-curdling scream and shakily point out that it seemed he was about to turn straight into the path of a car heading for us at 70 mph. “Goodness me,” he says looking guilty, then adding defensively, “Well, I was still going to look before turning.” And talking about that kind of speed, Mossie tells me:

“T

here is a place in Australia where there is a big notice up saying: ‘The speed limit is 45 mph. You are not Stirling Moss!’ “I’ve always wanted to go over there and let the police cop me doing sixty. Then watch their faces.” I hope I’m there when it happens.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES ARTIST I

By Debra Mieth

f you are a lover of landscapes like Nan Dingle enjoys painting them, the June Artist of the Month Exhibition at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre is a not to be missed event. There is a hard to describe enchanting quality to the paintings and drawings of this multi-award winning artist. It’s as if even the paintings are drawings. Sometimes they remind me of the works of van Gogh without being the least Impressionist. Apart from the beautiful scenes Nan captures on canvas, she also paints thoughtful abstracts with interesting names: Elegance of Eels, for instance, and Billabong with an egg-like geometric patterned sun in the abstract sky. Nan Dingle’s interest in landscape painting is inspired by travelling with her husband Barry Stone throughout New Zealand and Australia. With a feel for the Australian bush, a taste of the Outback, a balance of coastal scenes, rocks, mountains, shape, texture, line and colour, it’s all there

Nan Dingle in this former geography and ceramics teacher’s artwork. Her Artist of the Month exhibition—titled Rocks and High Places—is featuring images of Australian ranges, mesas and mountain tops, mostly in oils on canvas. Over 23 years, Nan has finished 1170 paintings, selling around half of them which migrated as far afield as the UK, USA, Canada, Singapore and Denmark. She has donated 100 works to charities, hospices and nursing homes; won a total of 44 awards and has exhibited in 26 Australian and New Zealand galleries, most recently the Redcliffe City Art Gallery, the Caboolture Hub Gallery and Redcliffe’s Old Fire Station Gallery.

Mt Wellington view over Bruny Island Born in western Brisbane, Nan always drew and painted as a child. Today she uses oils, acrylics and drawing media. Her creative process involves seeking out the natural repetitions in landforms and weather events which provide the prominent themes in her work. She now lives in bayside Scarborough, but continues to travel often

with Barry to reproduce their destinations as art. Nan will be giving her artist talk at the Gallery on Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach on Friday 14 June starting 10:30 am, with morning tea served afterwards. Warning about tax scams

According to Lyndal WIGGINS, Senior Sergeant Officer in Charge of Bribie Island Police Station there has been an increasing report of scams. She mentions that Tax scams seem to be prevalent at the moment. So be wary and read the following advice from the government’s scam watch website. Tax scams seem to be everywhere at the moment and Scamwatch is warning people not to engage with phone calls or emails they receive threatening arrest or jail over unpaid tax debts. Reports of these scams have jumped significantly during the past month. The scam is timed to coincide with the cut-off date for people needing to have their tax returns submitted to the Australian Tax Office. Most of these scams occur over the phone. People get

Traffic Infringement Notices: A total of thirty Traffic Infringement Notices were issued in Bribie Island Division. If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day. You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersqld.com.au 24hrs per day.

a call from an aggressive scammer directly or receive a robotic-sounding voice message informing them they need to contact a phone number in relation to an outstanding tax debt, or face imminent arrest and jail time. The scammer pretends to be from the Australian Tax Office or the police to scare people into believing the contact is real. They will tell people to buy gift cards like iTunes or Google Play to ‘pay’ the tax debt or a fine. They may also get people to send money by other methods like Bitcoin ATMs or pre-paid credit cards. This is a scam. The tax office will never threaten you with arrest, or demand immediate payment of a tax debt or fine with unusual payment methods like gift cards or Bitcoin. If you ever get a call or email claiming you will be arrested due to a tax debt, simply hang up the phone or delete the email. Do not call the number provided in the phone message or email you receive. If you’re concerned the contact may be legitimate, you can also call the ATO on 1800 008 540 to check its veracity. You can also report the scam at www.scamwatch. gov.au/report-a-scam.

REGULAR FEATURE standards and raising expectations. There’s nothing practical to be gained by that. Rather than concentrating too hard, over the course of this exciting month, by taking a steady approach you’ll find that your vision becomes clearer. You’ll have time to enjoy the benefits of your efforts too.

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FOR JUNE By Oscar Cainer

GEMINI (May 22 June 22)

June brings great potential for change. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21)

Should you be courageous or cautious this month? With such exciting astrological energies acting on you, innovation is in the air. You might even prefer to try an approach which resonates with a sense of how things ‘ought’ to be. A past experience is going to prove immensely valuable, as you embark on a new phase of your life’s journey. As your spirit of adventure is emboldened, you’ll find ways to develop old talents so that they fit new situations. Your ability to adapt is the key to your success. Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. The ancient gods of sea and sky combine this Solstice month. Adventurous thunder god Jupiter realigns with visionary Neptune for the second time this year. And with the Sun and Venus perfectly placed to create exciting astrological patterns, there’s a call for bold creativity in sensitive situations. As fiery Mars 62

and inquisitive Mercury combine opposite Pluto, the horizon is not without its storms. Yet, Saturn provides a willing anchor to ensure that progress can be made without drifting into difficult waters. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Although we don’t think of imagination as being a practical skill, pragmatic people understand that a lot can be gained by ‘idling’ time away. When we try too hard to make every second count, we end up setting impossible

We assume that in order to get on with people, we need to have lots in common. Yet, even harmonious relationships involve an element of struggle. In the best ones, the power ebbs and flows dynamically. When interpersonal associations run too smoothly, we often lose interest. We need challenges to keep us on our toes. This month, try to remember the positive effects which result from being in a position of tension. The more comfortable you are with being stretched, the greater the gains will be. Four minutes on the phone can make June special. Call 1900 959 005. Inspiring times await you in June. Call your NEW forecast: 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) You have a lot to be grateful for. Soon, though, you’ll have even more reasons to be thankful. That’s not to say that you won’t, over the course of June, have reasons to be infuriated too! Your problems aren’t all about to disappear over the horizon. Yet, in this Solstice month, any gathering clouds will have a shimmer of sunlight shining through. June brings hope, in the form of inspired ideas and promising news. There’s the potential for sincere

support too. Keep looking for the silver lining; it’s within easy reach. Be ready for the magic on offer to you in June. Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) It’s not easy to sit back and rest on your laurels when you know something needs to be done. But sometimes, inaction is better than action; and this month, there’s a lot to be gained from holding back rather than jump into the fray. To mange this, you’ll need to rise above criticism from those who’d prefer you to leap into action. You’ll also have to manage your own sense of guilt. Patience is not easy to find when there’s so much going on. Choose the right moment, act with confidence, and success is yours. June brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 September 23) Victory can be dangerous; it can affect us like an intoxicating drink. Failure is equally powerful; it can anaesthetise us to signs of hope. Fortunately, even though we try to hold on to the first of these, the effects of both are shortlived. When we hang on too tightly to success, we grow overconfident and lose touch with our emotions. Powerful astrological events this month will bring new perspective to recent disappointments. What you perceived to be a loss is going to turn out to be a delightful gain. Don’t miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for June. Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 October 23) Since the journey through life is full of crossroads and hairpin bends, it’s

not easy to spot a shortcut. Sometimes, what appears to be a timesaving manoeuvre turns out to involve so many complications that it ultimately ends up slowing you down. This month, as Jupiter and Neptune align, they draw your attention to an easier route to follow. With Venus, your ruler, acting as a catalyst, you’ll be enthused to stride out with confidence. Put your best foot forward and you’ll love the destination you’re heading to. Your in-depth forecast for June is ready. Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 November 22) If this month were a song, it would be playing at a late-night party, with the bass notes making your windows vibrate! After failing to block out the sound, you’d be on your way round to get the music turned off. But, as you approached the source you’d realise that you were moving to a new groove. Despite your best effort to stay annoyed, you’d find yourself joining the party and dancing the night away. Be ready to enjoy something you don’t think you like. If you listen carefully you’ll hear that June is playing your song! Discover why June has so many opportunities. Call 1900 959 005.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Ideas are everywhere: ‘Why don’t you try this?’ ‘Why don’t you do that?’ Yet, there are many people who are resistant to change. ‘That won’t work here.’ ‘That’s not what’s needed.’ That’s why it’s hard to be innovative. So what do you need to do in order to create a new dynamic approach which will allow you to show your flair this month? As your ruler aligns with Neptune, it brightens your vision and focuses your enthusiasm, leaving you with no choice. It might not be easy, but you must follow your dream. There is inspiring news in your in-depth June forecast. Call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 January 20) When you know you’re being deceived, you’re not being deceived. You can only be misled when you’re unaware of it. Sometimes, ridiculous things are done by people who think they’re being smart. This month, the powerful effect of your ruling planet, Saturn, indicates that you will find skilful ways to manage complex, changing situations which complicate your commitments. You’ll do very well in June, as long as you remember not to doubt the courage of your convictions. Aim as high as you dare.

AQUARIUS (January 21 February 19) When you look back, it’s hard to imagine other people living in houses you’ve inhabited, or driving cars you used to drive. These things were yours, and now they are not. You’ve moved on and you’re focused on other things. Nothing in our lives is permanent – which is why we need to cherish what we have, whilst holding on to a sense of perspective. That’s what you need to have in June. As you embrace a new perception of what matters to you most, you’ll find a new way of realising your potential. June is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1900 959 005.

PISCES (February 20 March 20) Just a glance at a newspaper or online newsfeed is enough to show what’s going on in the world. The news is rarely positive. Yet, is this a reflection of the truth, or could it be the way details are reported and shared with the ‘audience’? I mention this because your own ‘inner news desk’ has an agenda of its own this month. Although there will be exciting headlines and a few dramatic moments, there are also plenty of ‘good news’ stories developing. Just don’t let your nerves get in the way of your hopes. In June, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1900 959 005.

The northwestern point of Moreton at Comboyoro Point is a pressure point of currents and tides, and requires experience and caution when heading through after dark. In the estuaries, the bream, whiting, and flattys have been on the chew. With a few jewies, snapper, cod, morwong, sweetlip and grass parrot turning up in the passage. As the water temperature drops over the next few weeks expect the squid, winter whiting, bream and tailor to really fire up. With so many land-based options on Bribie, it’s easy to find a quiet little spot away from the crowds and enjoy the stunning beauty of the area. The area just north from white patch to Gallaghers makes a great area to wade the flats.

The muddies have still been thick as with quality crabs coming from all the passage creeks. The sandcrabs also have been widespread throughout the passage and bay. They should increase in size and numbers over the next few weeks.

Drive safely and remember to take your time to enjoy our wonderful Island. Historically Bribie Island was the home of the Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal group who used bark canoes, nets for fishing and catching birds while spears were used for killing the local kangaroos and wallabies. They used stone traps to catch fish, the remains can be seen at Sandstone point. There is evidence of middens (ancient stacks of shells) on the Island and Sandstone Point. Their tribal lands run between Pine River in the south to the Burrunan River in the north and the Conondale ranges in the west. The Island had an estimated number of 600 Aborigines on it at the time of Flinders exploration. An Aboriginal Reserve was established near White Patch in 1877, and it is understood that by 1879 the reserve was closed

deemed a failure. People were shifted to Peel Island temporarily awaiting the building to be moved from Bribie Island to Stradbroke Island while awaiting the Myora site set up. By 1897 most of the Island’s Aboriginal population had died. In 1897 a fish cannery was opened at the northern end of the Island but it was abandoned in 1901. Within ten years, most of the population were visitors, holiday-makers and campers. In 1924 at Bongaree, the Island’s main settlement. Bribie Island was described as a pleasure resort and Moreton Bay’s oyster ground. In Late 1950s Bongaree’s main street was a sandy esplanade dotted with holiday houses and a general store with Wallabies and wild ponies to be seen. The northern, threequarters of the island was a Recreation Area, including the World War II fort which is now on the Queensland heritage register. There are approximately 360 Aboriginal descendants live on Bribie Island today. Did you know the aboriginal people were so in touch with the environment that they didn’t catch the sea

Storm clouds in the distance whiting until the sea eagle took the first fish, and they only took the second sized fish and let the big ones go on to spawn, fish were abundant, they knew the sea whiting were coming because the golden wattle tree flowered, surprisingly the flower pods resemble the sea whiting roe.

ROCK SOLID DEFENCE KEY TO TIGRESS’S WIN By Coach Brad Litchfield Photo Credit: Brad Litchfield The Bribie Tigress’s were back in action on Friday night with a home game against 3rd place Woombye Taipans. After some recent good performances, Woombye came to Bribie with a lot of confidence and in a night of action the difference came down to the Bribie defence. The Tigress’s kept a clean sheet and at the other end of the park, our constant pressure on the Woombye defence led to 4 superb goals. It could have been more apart from some solid

defence from the Woombye backline. Strikers Hannah Bulley and Britney Bowden scored, whilst Chelsea Falzon scored a cracker of a shot from well outside the area. The Tigress’s player of the match goes to Courtney Johnson for a great performance between the posts. Her communication to the back line and some impressive saves against quality shooting was a joy to watch. The Tigress’s played a good expansive game, knocking the ball around and creating some good chances. A great team performance.

RANTS & RAVES

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Through your magazine, I would like to publicly thank the good Samaritans who came to our aid on Tuesday 23rd April. Our car developed a flat tyre near Ningi, on a rainy morning. A very kind gentleman pulled up and immediately came to help - umbrella in hand. A young man walking a dog also came to assist. Two other men pulled up to help but weren’t needed.

I first visited Bribie Island as a young girl on the Koopa, and when first married came across on the barge and camped, what an unspoiled paradise it was then. Early in the 1970’s, we bought a holiday shack right on the waterfront at Woorim and it was magic.

In no time the wheel was changed and we were on our way. It’s great to see that there is still folk willing to help strangers. We were truly appreciative of their kindness. Jean Ellis, Bongaree Dear Editor, Where has all the Music gone? Well, I found it on my morning walk on Monday along the waterfront at the jetty. Five or six people playing their ukuleles and singing, I must mention some were beautiful Island ladies. Several people joined in the singing, all were invited to come and play and sing, this happens each fortnight at 11.00AM. Oh, what a lovely surprise so all you Ukulele players and singers are invited to join in. How good is this to start the week. This could only happen on Bribie Island. Regards to all, Suzanne, Bongaree 78

I know we can’t stop progress and many good things have come to the Island. However, we came here because we don’t want a Gold Coast or a sunshine Coast environment. We don’t want high rise on the Island, four storeys is adequate. We need to retain our unique piece of paradise. Believe me, I come in contact with a lot of people of my age group who love this Island and while we are most thankful for the many amenities we have today, we do not want high rise over four storeys on this beautiful Island. Yours faithfully, Stephanie McLaughlin, Bellara Dear Editor, Just a quick response after reading the recently delivered magazine. I believe that most people are of the opinion that politicians are out of touch with everyday things. The comment in the minister’s media release referring to the birds being injured by ‘overheating light casings’ is maybe a case in

YOUR SAY point. LED light and heat generation is maybe an indication of straying from reality. The high efficiency of LED is down to the fact that this light production source wastes no energy in heat generation. Maybe just humour the Pollies as long as we quickly get the pelicans to return rather than find a new home. Cheers, David Horrocks. Dear Editor, Enough is Enough, time to step up and get onboard with the Sandstone Pt. Residents regarding their action with the Sandstone Pt. Hotel. The noise they had to endure on the weekend was incredible. We live on Bribie, 2 klms away and could hear the music and PA very well. Could someone put the Sandstone Pt. Residents Group contact details in the paper so those that want to join them, can. I’m thinking that we need a trusted person voted in as Mayor that will take some affirmative action against the noise pollution we all have to endure for the minority that visits our area. The minority that doesn’t pay rates here! Sincerely Deb, Bellara Dear Editor, Saturday night 5th May I was awoken by the fireworks noise at 9 pm (some of us are shift workers), so I thought “great, the show is over”. Stone the bloody crows, the music starts up again, louder than before.! I think someone had a fiddle with the amplifiers during the fireworks. :) House windows vibrating in sync with the music is an annoying sound. To all those MBRC elected council members who

shirked their responsibility by sidestepping recent Sandstone Point Hotel business are invited over to my house when the next concert is on. Nothing like first-hand experience before making decisions. Regards, Allan Blake, Bongaree Dear Editor, Every day we see more evidence that the rights of Bribie Island residents have to give way to the rights of tourists. We, the ratepaying residents have rights which should supersede those of visitors. Land on the island is worth more than the nearby mainland, and ratepayers are hit with higher rates. Yet the MBRC takes no notice of us. This island is a sanctuary for people who don’t want the “high life” of the Sunshine or Gold Coasts. It is an internationally renowned sanctuary for migratory birds. And yet MBRC permits the disturbing noise of fireworks almost every weekend, even during the season when these birds are preparing for migration. Barry Clark’s history column has pointed out that tourists demanded to change the island as soon as the bridge was built. They continue to demand changes which suit them and protest the changes that we residents want, such as banning 4WDs on the beach. What impression do we want to leave in the memories of visitors? Do we want it to be the one which my sister remembers about Frazer Island: a continuous stream of 4WDs on their beach is her most vivid memory of the place! Hazel Beneke, Banksia Beach

Dear Editor I would like to say thank you very much on behalf of the Banksia Garden Club for the excellent way our article & photo was presented in your gloss magazine. Judy Winstanley, Banksia Garden Club Dear Editor, We would be grateful if you would please publicise our fight against the Moreton Bay Regional Council which in our opinion has gone right off the rails and is completely neglecting its ratepayers and residents in favour of representing the interests of businessmen who have contributed to councillors’ election funds. Ken Park President PANAG inc RESIDENTS GEAR UP FOR A FIGHT. The fight is between, on the one side, residents of Sandstone Point and Bribie Island who have been adversely affected by objectionably loud rock concerts, fireworks displays, low-flying helicopters and traffic chaos whenever there is an “event” at Sandstone Point Hotel. On the other side are the Comiskey family, owners and operators of the hotel who are seeking approval to increase the number of concerts; plus the Moreton Bay Regional Council which has recently approved an increase from 9 to 12 days of concerts per year. Not satisfied with the increase granted by the council the hotel is now engaging with the council staff seeking a “negotiated agreement”, which may result in many more concerts. PANAG, the Pumicestone Area Noise Abatement Group [incorporated] has been formed to represent

the residents and the hundreds who objected formally to the recent increase. President of PANAG, Ken Park said that they have advised MBRC that they will be appealing against council’s decision in the Planning and Environment Court. Preliminary advice from an acoustics expert and legal consultants indicate that the council was in serious error back in 2017 when so-called major event concerts were first approved; and the latest approval is also seriously flawed. We are advised that our case for an appeal is sound and we have given those reasons to council in the hope that they can reconsider their position without wasting ratepayers’ money on litigation. We have offered to stage a noise demonstration in chambers and to meet with councillors and staff. We can’t be more cooperative than that, Mr Park said. The people of Moreton Bay are alarmed at the close relationship between a number of councillors and the Comiskey family; and also about the way in which the council made its decision when so many had a conflict of interest and a quorum of elected councillors could not be found. A number of individuals have privately taken those complaints to the relevant authorities, he said. PANAG is actively seeking pledges to help fight the case if the council elects to go to court. Pledges and donations can be made to Peter Dallimore, treasurer. panag@gmail.com phone 0409321779. Released and authorised by Kenneth E Park, President PANAG[inc] president.panag@gmail.com BANKSIA BEACH

Dear Editor, Is this Bribie’s future? Dear Editor, ‘The solution to the “Pelican Problem” is simple: Main Roads affix a ‘Pelican Platform’ at the top of each light pole opposite the light. C’mon Minister for Main Roads, you can do it.” Pelican Pleader (Tim Dufton) Dear Editor, Read P.Aldridge letter last issue. You are correct that infrastructure is never planned for any developments and yes the Sandstone Hotel is there for good. 3 Things - I am not a person who objects to everything and you talk about 20000 residents who didn’t object – face it many people complain but don’t put pen to paper. My problem is how did this huge development get approval without asking the community what they wanted-done and dusted before most of us knew. I have no objection to people having a good time but not on this scale for suburbia. Where else are so many concerts on that have houses backing onto the venue. I have asked many people and businesses about what the Hotel brings to them, answer—nothing really—and the Hotels owner has

Jill Banks

said (not in these words) he doesn’t spend his money on the island as Bribie is not his bread and butter. I believe the Hotels owner or his father’s company started the over 50’s development at Spinnaker and have now sold it off-I’m sure if I’m incorrect I’ll be told. However, I know from a personal event that this same company do what they want and seemed hand in hand with a council (this back then was the Gold Coast Council). Unless you have a lot of money its no use fighting them. Developers care nothing about people, any problems with traffic or any animals that are displaced by them it’s all the mighty dollar. Secondly, if we allow a 5 storey limit now it’ll be 6 or 7 storey limit over time and on it goes. Lastly, I hear pythons are being killed by some households near the hotel. Besides it being illegal they do keep the rats and mice populations down are really harmless so please get someone to move them to a safer place. M White
