GOING BACK IN TIME
W
ith July almost upon us and the weather turning that much cooler we could be cliche and say something like “Winter is Coming”, but I’ll leave that to fans of Game of Thrones and also the thousands of avid devotees who will be attending the 30th annual Abbey Medieval Festival next month.
Many of you may have visited the Abbey Museum in the past and enjoyed the experience of what this fantastic museum has to offer but nothing can quite prepare you for the time warp that will descend upon the venue as the Abbey Medieval festival takes over the grounds during July. The event will bring thousands of tourists into our region and if it is anything like past years the people on Bribie will be treated to glimpses
of the medieval look as visitors to the event take a break from all the jousting, feasting and other activities and head over to Bribie for some additional recreational activities. So please give these medieval knights, serfs and damsels in distress a cheery Bribie welcome and show them some of our own old fashioned hospitality should you meet any of these visitors in the street or on the beach. The organisers of the Abbey Medieval Festival should give themselves a pat on the back for creating and growing such a successful and long-running event. And of course, if you are so inclined you can always don your suit of armour and head on out to the event. But check out their website for full details www. abbeymedievalfestival.com

MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 30 YEARS STRONG
Step into a Medieval World and Cure Post-Game of Thrones Blues at Abbeystowe. This year marks the 30th anniversary for Caboolture’s Abbey Medieval Festival, which provides an authentic medieval experience for families and Westeros junkies alike. The most recognised element of the Abbey Medieval Festival is the Tournament Weekend Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July - with a variety of medieval battle-style tournaments including everything from archery
ADVENTURE, STYLE, COMFORT
and jousting to Turkish oil wrestling and sword fighting. Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology Director Edith Cuffe OAM said she is excited about the program for the festival’s 30th year. “The draw of the festival has only increased in the last few years, with television shows such as Game of Thrones and Vikings inviting a whole new crowd to experience the Middle Ages,” said Mrs Cuffe. “Authenticity is key at the Abbey Medieval Festival. While shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings may not be historically accurate, they’ve encouraged a whole new generation of medieval lovers who want to come

in shining armour and damsels in distress and helps children to understand the differences between fairytales and actual history.
“Another key element of our Festival is the food - all of our food vendors create amazing, historically inspired food, which is a key part to providing visitors with an authentic experience.
“In addition to our Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun week our Tournament Weekend program includes child-friendly activities from a variety of our reenactment groups, which will encourage children to get hands-on with medieval history” said Ms DeRegt.
“The history of the festival is also a huge draw. There are families who have been coming for decades, and we see children whose parents and grandparents have attended the festival since its inception” she said. In 2019 the Abbey Medieval Festival includes the Medieval Banquet Saturday 29th June and Saturday 6th July - with live entertainment and a grand medieval feast, in addition to the Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun week - Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July. Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology Education Manager Melanie DeRegt said the Kids Dig It! Family Fun weeks are a huge draw for local families. “Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun week is fun, educational, and cheaper than a family trip to the movies” she said. “It inspires curiosity into the world of knights
The Festival is the largest fund-raiser for the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, and is organised mostly by a coordinated team of volunteers. Festival Volunteer Wade Smoothy said, “I recall coming to the festival with my family and having the time of my life.” “I tried on armour too large, held a sword too heavy and made memories larger than life that I will treasure for the rest of my life,” Mr Smoothy said. The first Abbey Medieval Festival was held next to St Michael’s church and had only 300 re-enactors and attendees, while Abbey Medieval Festival 2018 was held in the dedicated Abbeystowe site and had almost 25 000 re-enactors and attendees.

COMMUNITY EVENT Colourful entertainment
This year, crowd favourites Sophie Thomson, Jerry Coleby-Williams, Paul West, Phil Dudman and Claire Bickle will return, offering visitors the opportunity to really interact with the who’s who of Australian gardening across a broad range of topics. New on the program is Dr Tim Heard, an entomologist, ex-CSIRO research scientist and long-term stingless bee keeper and promoter of native bees. He will be sharing his wealth of knowledge on stingless beekeeping, using stingless bees for pollination and sugarbag honey. “Keeping bees has become so popular over the years that we now have several experts sharing their tips on keeping bees and harvesting your own honey,” Ms Beazley said. “Earlier this year, former River Cottage Australia frontman Paul West hosted The Great Australian Bee Challenge on ABC where families were challenged to successfully keep a beehive, demonstrating that anyone who’s willing to learn a new skill can produce honey in their own backyard.”

full line up of speakers will keep the expected crowd of 40,000 busy according to the spokesperson for the show’s organisers.
Whether it is bees or bromeliads, composting or camellias, the Queensland Garden Expo will have something for everyone when it opens for its 35th year on 12 July 2019. In just one month the Nambour Showgrounds, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, will come alive with 40,000 plants, 360 exhibits and eight stages offering more than 120 lectures and demonstrations. Queensland Garden Expo Event Manager Marion Beazley said event organisers were looking forward to a packed program of 10

gardening delights, perfect for the most dedicated green thumb as well as gardening novices. “What makes this event unique is the access visitors have to the wealth of knowledge our presenters offer, which makes it perfect for those beginning to venture into the garden, as well as those seeking specific advice,” Ms Beazley said. “Visitors can learn ‘up close and personal’ from the very best in the business across a broad range of topics from keeping bees and planting a kitchen garden to sowing seeds and keeping chooks. No matter what they’re into, there really is something for everyone.”
The Bribie Islander
Sophie Thomson and Jerry Coleby-Williams Visitors looking for some great tips on growing their own produce and turning it into delicious gourmet meals will be delighted by the Cook’s Garden Stage. “Growing your own food can ensure the freshest and healthiest of produce and visitors will be spoiled for choice on learning how to produce a bountiful harvest in their own garden,” said Ms Beazley. “Last year, Paul West was a huge drawcard so we’re thrilled that he’ll be returning to the expo and taking to the stage. We’re sure his ‘Garden to Table’ presentations will be very popular.
“We’re excited that Phil Dudman will be here once again to share a bunch of simple, practical ideas that will help visitors make the most of their growing space and boost their backyard bounty. “Long time Expo attendee, Kevin Redd will introduce the crowd to some very unusual and versatile green vegetables that thrive in a subtropical garden, providing a year-round supply of healthy greens. He will also whip up some quick, tasty and easy recipes using these hardy and delicious plants.” If you’ve ever thought your backyard was too small for keeping chickens and growing food, think again. With our backyards tending to be smaller these days, Claire Bickle will advise on which chicken breeds are best
for small backyards and Jerry ColebyWilliams will show attendees how easy it is to grow food in small spaces. “The Queensland Garden Expo has continued to grow year after year but we want people to know the event is not just for the most dedicated green thumbs – everybody is welcome and will find something of interest,” said Marion Beazley. The 2019 Queensland Garden Expo will feature more than 120 free lectures and demonstrations and in excess of 360 exhibitors and displays. It will be held between 12 and 14 July at the Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour. free USC course is offering adults in the Moreton Bay region the chance to upgrade their academic skills, get a taste of university life and even start planning for a new career. USC will run Uni Skills for You at the North Lakes Library on 17-18 June. The two-day program is designed for adults of all ages who did not finish high school or may have not studied formally for some years. USC spokesperson Veronica Sanmarco said it was ideal for those thinking of taking the first step towards studying at TAFE or university. “There are no tests, assignments or exams to worry about, just an opportunity to sample higher education and explore the career and higher education options open to them,” she said.
“The program aims to demystify university for those who are unsure about what tertiary study involves. “It offers a supportive group environment to help people build their confidence and capacity for higher learning while developing new skills.” Facilitated by experienced USC advisers, participants will learn how to recognise and develop their skills gained from work and life experience and turn them into academic reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills. At the end of the course, they can arrange to have individual sessions with USC career advisers to help develop study and career plans. Register at www.usc.edu.au/ us4c or email pathways@ usc.edu.au.

HEALTH
What do I fancy? In such circumstances back in England, the first thing I would be offered by my mother would be a beaten up raw egg with a generous amount of sweet sherry. I can never remember being considered too young for this tipple so I guess I have been imbibing since an infant. It may sound less than inviting, but I loved it and felt far more privileged than many of my contemporaries who would be offered nothing more exciting than warm bread and milk. I might add that alcohol was strictly off limits unless one was feeling “poorly”. Another benefit of not being well was to be given a tablespoonful of a strange treacle-like substance that I think was called Virol. I have been known to help myself to this nectar when no adults were looking, carefully washing the spoon afterwards to hide the evidence of my wickedness.
FLU FOOD
By Elaine Lutton
Y
es, it is possible to succumb to the Flu even in the sunny mild winters we have in Queensland.
Having lingered at Death’s Door for two or three days, I gradually begin to believe I might make it back to health with the aid of a little sustenance.
To return to the present. Soup sounds kind and comforting to a constitution making a comeback. Not the chicken soup of my Jewish friends but the good hearty tomato soup that comes in a can. In the UK I am told one can still obtain Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup but here in Oz I used to have to make do with Big Red. Not the same at all; but now Australia has finally seen the light, and Cream of Tomato is available. This can be spiced up with ground black pepper and small cubes of strong cheddar cheese that melts in the heat of the soup. Serve in a large mug so one can alternately slurp and stir. Those long tendrils of melted elastic cheese deliver such unctuous joy! Finally, on the road to recovery comes the moment when I feel an actual hunger for solid food.
Only one thing will do. dine in / take away
Can any food be more delicious than poached eggs on buttery toast? There is a ritual that must be observed when partaking of this food of the Gods. Two eggs, white just set, but yolks still runny, must be placed on two toasted and generously buttered thick slices of bread. Accompanying these two further slices of buttered toast is required. Salt and ground black pepper are sprinkled over the eggs. The white of the eggs is eaten first with some of the ‘spare’ toast making sure the butter is truly appreciated. Sucking is encouraged.
This is followed by the final crowning moment. OPENING HOURS

The yolk of both eggs is pierced and the golden flow of lava covers the toast which is waiting to receive its anointing. Now, and only now, will I allow myself the orgasmic moment of consuming toast, butter, and yellow yolk melded together in this triumph of gastronomy. Total Bliss! And before you suggest that I should get out more, try a little of what I’m having. It is definitely worth a few trifling days of indisposition with the Flu.

A READER’S STORY
A PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF A HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE
I
f you’ve ever thought about going on a Hot Air Balloon, this is what it’s like: Phase One - Loiter in a deserted car park at 4:15am At that time of the morning, any ‘waiting’ you need to do just naturally appears very suspicious and unwholesome. So, I loitered suspiciously, astutely avoiding eye contact with a very sketchy looking van in said car park because I got there way too early because I kept waking up every half hour all night worried I was going to sleep through all six of my alarms. When the driver finally arrived to collect me, he was bursting with so much energy that I was concerned enough to check the back of the bus for the body of the real driver. Finding no corpse, I allowed myself to be chauffeured out to a friendly little field in Jimboomba where a few giant party balloons were waking up, reaching their bloated cheeks towards the sky. Fun Fact: these 18
particular party balloons were ten stories high - neat! Phase Two - Fall gracefully into the picnic basket Friendly staff organised the group around the balloons, and we were instructed to climb into the, no joke, actual wicker basket. My inner maniac was giggling pretty hard by this point. My outer maniac only giggled a little bit, trying valiantly not to make me look unstable. The picnic basket was a rectangle, and divided into 5 bits. The middle bit was its own section, then each side was further divided into 2. So each side of the basket had two sections for passengers (6 peeps in each section; 24 in the whole basket) and the pilot gets the middle with the fire and the highly, highly flammable and numerous gas bottles. I caught my foot and fell gracefully into the basket, and went to stand next to what we’ll call the cockpit, or the cockbasket, if you will. The cockbasket had just

enough room for the pilot to stand and was totally surrounded by BIG gas bottles on all sides. Very flammable. The instrument panel was an iPad and some hand-held GPS type gadgets that you can get a BCF, all duct taped to the side of basket. Inner maniac barks laughter. I looked around for the radio. I knew there had to be one, you know, to call Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! if needed (which I thought was a definite probability at that point). I spied only
By Kerrie Goodwin a lonely walkie talkie for this purpose. Above Ben the Pilot (nice guy) there was a square metal frame with a HUGH Bunsen burner on each corner. Each burner had HUGE trigger under it, so Ben could reach up and squeeze two triggers (one hand for each) like a HUUUGH flame thrower, pouring the power of Vesuvius into this officebuilding-sized happy yellow sack leering over us. Inner maniac falls to knees and slaps the ground whilst wheezing for air.
Now, there is no way balloon pilots aren’t maniacs. Come on, the kind of person who swings from a monstrous birthday balloon in a car-sized picnic basket, spraying a quadruple flame thrower in gleeful joy towards the sky every day must be totally nuts. I am not complaining, mind you. Ben the Maniac is an inspiration.
Quick tips for anyone wanting to go ballooning: You don’t need a jumper if it’s summer. A fire the size of your car is hot. Really f***ing hot actually. Fire is loud. It’s not windy and it won’t wreck your hair. Wear pants. You gotta climb into the basket, there’s no door. It’s a genuine giant’s picnic basket.
Phase Three - Float away, very, very gently
YOU SEE THE FFERENCE? We stood in the basket on the grass while Ben the Maniac Pilot burnt through a few more tanks of gas, and we started to float up. I was kind of expecting that a balloon ride would be a bit crazy...you know, like windy, cold, maybe feeling a bit like you’re strapped to the outside of the plane instead of cosy inside it. Well it isn’t. At all. It was much more like standing in a giant picnic basket, next to a friendly fire demon,
Getting up early sucks.
in your back yard, and the ground is actually a big iPad showing Google Earth and someone is just slowly pinching it to make it zoom out ever so slowly. My office chair at work is more unstable than that basket.
a trained professional n spot eye disease
Fun fact - you can’t steer a giant party balloon. Hubby says to me the day before
y we take the time to look carefully es. We have the latest technology to hat you have a thorough eye test
the ride, “So do you just float around in the wind?” and I’m like “Dude *scoffing arrogantly* of course they wouldn’t just do that. They must have some control otherwise you’d just end up crashing, duh”. Joke’s on me. Floating around in the wind is exactly what they do. The manic pilots
can spin the balloon slowly, and control the rising and descent using their hell fire and by popping the top off the balloon to release hot air in a hurry. But as far as direction is concerned, they pretty much just check the wind speed at different altitudes in the morning

A READER’S STORY CONTINUED waiting for the WHUMP, while others had already climbed out and ordered their Uber. We helped squish all the hot air from the flaccid balloon, and then headed to a Vineyard for breaky & bubbles. Life is hard. Inner maniac arrived at home heavy lidded, satisfied.
with nifty little toys before the float (I’m saying float instead of flight, because I’m right), so they know “OK at 1,000 feet we’re going east slowly and at 3,000 feet we’re gonna turn around and go that way real fast”. Wind changes all the time, so they use their highly technical walkie talkies to keep in touch with the other balloon maniacs to relay what one another
are experiencing at their respective heights and speeds. Totally bonkers, and very very cool. I mean, I have trouble crossing the road at the lights without hurting myself, and these guys are making magic happen with barely any equipment. It’s incredible. Phase Four - Float down We landed so gently I was still clenching the side
If you’re into adrenaline sports, ballooning probably isn’t for you. But for me, someone who’s done a little flight training as a youth and knows a little bit about how crazy it actually is to be doing such a thing (as well as having an inner maniac), I thought it was fantastic. I didn’t care about the scenery really, I just loved the experience of using basic high school science to take 25 people 6,000 feet in the air safely just

for something to do of a morning. I’ve heard of some people having not so pleasant balloon rides, but that wasn’t my experience. And considering how little control you have while you’re up there, I can totally see how it could get rough. I think if you’re considering a balloon ride, you need to accept that you might have gentle trip, or you might just smash into the side of a barn. Accept that you’re dealing with nature here, and the wind decides to do what it wants, when it wants. The pilots are incredible and use their judgment before taking off and at every step thereafter, but there will be a large element of randomness that just comes with the territory. It’s just the nature of the beast. Don’t like it? Stay home and sleep in.

ROTARY Raina Fox (centre) with the alumni from Peace Centres who attended the Convention Verkehrsverbund (HVV), the local public transit system, was the main mode of transportation during the convention. It is an extensive bus, rail, and ferry network that makes travel throughout Hamburg easy. Attendees were able to use their convention badges as substitutes for tickets.
A PARLIAMENT OF OWLS? A CONSPIRACY OF RAVENS? A RALLIÉR OF ROTARIANS?

P
eople meet all the time – at rallies and conventions all over the world. From the ‘Curia’ in ancient Rome to our very own Canberra (which is the word for ‘meeting place’ in the local Ngunnawal language) we’ve been getting together forever. Likewise, every year Rotarians from all around the globe meet in a designated city to learn, make new and lasting friendships, exchange new ideas and strategies, and simply experience what makes Rotary the World’s Number One Charity. This is Rotary’s big yearly event and the spirit and enthusiasm are contagious. It is where Rotarians take action to create true and lasting change in the world. As Rotary International President-Elect, Mark
22
Daniel Maloney said in his address to the Convention ‘when we come to a convention like this one here in Hamburg, we get the chance to live and experience the world of Rotary. We get to connect in a way that simply is not possible anywhere else. We sit down next to someone from the other side of the globe and call them by their first name — and because we are all Rotarians, none of us is strangers. Connections like these change the world.’ This year, between 1-5 June, the Convention was held in Hamburg, Germany. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is Europe’s second largest port and is the second largest city in Germany with a population of 1.8 million. It is located in the north

George and Mary Grant, from the Rotary Club of Bribie Island, not only attended the Convention but also exhibited our new ‘Hand Hygiene for Heath Project’ in the House of Friendship (HoF). The HoF is one of the main meeting areas at Rotary Conventions. Co-incidentally the word “Hof” in German means “court” or – as in “Banhhof” – a train station – again where people gather. Mary told me there was a lot of interest in our new project. As a result of this exhibition, we hope to obtain additional partners for our project and thus become eligible to apply for a global grant. Rotary’s global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in

Rotary’s areas of focus. By working together to respond to real community needs, clubs and districts strengthen their global partnerships and therefore can change the world. Our ‘Hand Hygiene for Heath Project’ which uses SpaTap, will bring clean drinking and hand washing water to remote areas, thus improving sanitation and eliminating disease. Bribie Rotary plays its part in this huge workload and all Briberians who help and/or contribute – from buying a sausage sandwich at our Market Van – to coming along to a function (eg Movie, Trivia or Scrabble nights) - assist in this vital work. Our Peace Fellow, Raina Fox, who is studying for her Master’s Degree at the University of Queensland also attended the Convention in Hamburg.
Raina presented a session at the Peace Synopsis which was part of the Convention. Following the theme of ‘sustaining peace through partnership’, the Synopsis explored how we can create peace in our communities and inspire others to take action. Raina’s session was titled ‘Starting from your why: innovation for project design’ which created lots of interest, conversations and connections. So, well done George and Mary Grant, and Raina Fox, for representing us at this global forum and shining a light on the Rotary Club of Bribie Island. As Sir Clement Renouf, the founder of our “End Polio” campaign said, “Rotary takes ordinary people and gives them extraordinary opportunities to do more with their lives than they ever dreamed possible.”

WINELANDER
W
hen I started in the industry with Kaiser Stuhl in the early 1980’s there were winds of change brewing it’s just that no-one was aware of what was coming.
For over 150 years the Australian wine industry had grown on the back of European tastes especially sweet wines and fortified wines with very little importance given to highquality table wines which were enjoyed by an elite few. Although mergers and takeovers had been around forever the joining together of two industry giants Penfold’s and Kaiser Stuhl signalled the beginning of an amazing run of amalgamations which would lead one to believe it would signal the end of the smaller producers but in fact what happened it diluted the market share of the larger companies and increased that of the smaller players. In fact, Deen DeBortoli when asked about the mergers was heard to say that every time two large wineries got together the market 24
share enjoyed by DeBortoli increased by 5 percent!
At the time of Penfold’s and Kaiser Stuhl getting together was a marriage that certainly worked, Penfold’s produced exceptional red wines and enjoyed a lot of success with Minchinbury Champagne, as it was then called, and a range of high quality fortified wines whilst Kaiser Stuhl had Summer Wine, Black Forest Moselle, Gold Medal Rose and massive sales in casks and table flagons. Kaiser Stuhl also enjoyed the privilege of having a chateau as their head office right next door to Penfold’s which as soon as the dust settled became the new tasting rooms of Penfolds and remains the main attraction in The Barossa today, all that was needed was to remove a fence. It was also a portfolio which fitted nicely and the retailers only had to see one representative instead of two, although when the merger was announced it could have been handled better. It was Christmas Eve when we were summoned to a meeting to make an announcement

which the rumour mill had been going strong for weeks, the State Manager made the announcement saying that in early January when we returned to work we would then employed by Penfold’s if indeed we still had a job, what a great Christmas present that turned out to be, worrying if you had a job to come back to!
In 1990 the wine division which by then included Seppelts and Woodley wines was sold to The South Australian Brewing Company which diversified its range of wines into a company called Southcorp Wines ( a company which under the name Southcorp made white goods) which was eventually taken over by The Fosters Group.
Within a couple of years, Wynns Seaview joined the ranks and yet everything worked because they had a good range of affordable table wines in both brands and a premium sparkling wine with the Seaview Champagne which was made in the traditional method whilst Minchinbury was tank produced and then bottled.
By now Fosters had acquired a range of companies which had in the past been the backbone of the Australian wine industry which not only owned the above brands but also Lindemans, Leo Buring, Tollana, Bailey’s of Glen Rowan, Mildara Blass, Rosemount, Rothbury Estate, St. Huberts and Yellowglen, along with Stags Leap and Chateau St. Jean from California and Matua Valley in New Zealand. In actual fact, this range alone should account for well over 60 percent of the total sales within The Australian wine industry but due to questionable decisions over the last thirty years the total market share is well below that and many labels which were once consumer favourites have disappeared.
During this period of takeovers, the company was part of Tooths Brewery which itself was part of the Adsteam Company along with David Jones and Woolworths. The Adelaide Steamship Company which had started life as an owner of Steamships in the 1800’s than building them, owning an aircraft business before becoming a corporate raider in the 1980’s before the bubble burst.
WINELANDER doubts, firstly because the Fosters eventually moved price of around $700 a bottle on the wine division takes the wine to a level renaming it Treasury where the average wine Wine Estates as it was drinker couldn’t possibly proving too hard to operate afford to pay $200 a glass both businesses, and to and a lot of the grapes that add to the woes in the make Grange don’t even industry a similar action have any connection with was happening to another the original wines. I am not family company –Thomas doubting the skills of the Hardy and Sons- had merged with Riverland giant winemaker Peter Gago or even the quality of the wine Berri Renmano to form BRL he makes just the way the Hardy in the early 1990’s company has turned a great which then was merged wine into an investment with Constellation Brands opportunity rather than to create the world’s largest international wine business. what Max intended, a wine to be enjoyed by all, and This also contained many that was how he enjoyed of our famous old names a bottle of Grange on a such as Hardy’s, Houghton, Sunday afternoon with a Stanley Leasingham, meat pie, as he told me Redman and Reynella and over dinner when he visited this company now trades Perth in the mid 1980’s. under the Accolade brand so between Treasury Wine A couple of specials at Dan Estates and Accolade Murphy’s that would be dozens of famous labels worth trying are St.Hugo have ceased to exist, and Cabernet Sauvignon $33.00 many famous vineyards per bottle and Tempus Two have been sold off which Verdelho $10.90 per bottle. leads on to question how Cheers, Philip Arlidge much difference is there in many of the labels from arlidge@bigpond.com.au these companies. After each take over the companies would insist that nothing would change and things would improve as costs would be lowered and more money would be available, a statement that has proved a disaster for so many historical wineries and the wines produced now in some cases are a sad copy of what was once made. Enough of the misery because many family wine companies have continued to survive and grow at the expense of these two giants, businesses such as Taylor’s, McWilliams, Brown Bros. Yalumba, Henschke, Angove and others are making outstanding individual wines. Would Max Schubert the founder of Grange be impressed with the current wine, I very much have my

FREE TRIP TO THE MOON By Barry Clark, U3A Public Relations

any readers of this article will remember exactly where they were when they heard the news of Man’s first landing on the Moon. That was 50 years ago in July 1969, but the images of the Lunar Landing and Neil Armstrong’s words “One small step for man…one giant leap for mankind” are so clearly remembered. To commemorate the fifty year anniversary of this remarkable achievement a unique 80-minute documentary film of the Moon Landing will be
shown at U3A on Friday 19th July at 1 pm. This U3A “Insight “ presentation is open to members and the general public and will be introduced by Juri Linins, an expert in Space exploration, and U3A Tutor on Flight and the Space Race. A coach load of interested members recently visited the NASA Exhibition at Queensland Museum in Brisbane, where an impressive display of significant items from the era of space exploration and moon landings were seen.
From unmanned orbits of the earth to the earliest walks in space, and the first moon landing and subsequent equipment and vehicles that the 12 people who have been there used to explore the surface. You can relive this exciting era of exploration, discovery and the First Moon Landing at U3A on Friday 19th July at 1pm. Bookings are essential by adding your name to the list at U3A or by a phone booking to 3408 1450 during office hours.
SAFARI in AFRICA In contrast to the Moon, a more down to earth “Insight” presentation will be given on Friday 26th July when author Jill Baker recounts aspects of her former years in “My Life in Africa”. Jill grew up in Southern Rhodesia where her father was a Headmaster, before studying Music in London and returning to Africa with her Tobacco Farmer husband. Then followed 15 years as a Journalist and news presenter on TV and Radio before she moved to Australia in 1983. Jill has since written several books about her family and her own personal life in Africa, including the Zambezi Trilogy, which has been promoted and sold throughout the world. Jill Baker will come to Bribie on Friday 26th July to entertain and amaze us with stories covered in her many books about her Life in Africa. This presentation is open to members and the general public but bookings are essential by adding your name to the list at U3A or phone booking to 3408 1450 during office hours.

ALL ABOUT THE MOON This is another informative “Insight” presentation in the following month on Friday 30th August, with some down to earth way of considering the Moon that orbits around our World. Tutors Philip and Jan Williams look in detail at our own special Moon, and the impact it has on our lives in so many ways. In addition to the obvious daily rise and fall of the tide, caused by the gravitational pull of the moon, the moon occupies a unique place in our human psyche and culture, as well as the profound effect it has on the lives of other plants and animals, and environmental factors on planet earth. We sing romantic songs about it, ancient ceremonies were based on its phases, we marvel when it is

eclipsed, and some people have been known to behave differently when it is full. This will be very different from the Moon Landing presentation, as this will reveal fascinating aspects of our own very special moon and its impact on us personally in ways that we had not perhaps appreciated before. This presentation on Friday 30th August is open to members and the general public, but bookings at U3A in person are required, or by phone to 3408 1450 during office hours.
U3A Information Each of these three very different “Insight” presentations will commence at 1 pm at the U3A Centre on First Avenue, and a nominal charge of $2 will be made for attendance, which includes afternoon tea.

We took the plunge to be able to live in a wonderful environment, close to all amenities, yet far enough away to feel as if you are on holidays every day. The caring and happy community on the island, the availability to pursue any interest you may have within the close proximity of your home, good transport options, with the lovely scenery to walk, ride your bike, peaceful environment close to water, what more could you ask for. My husband and I are retired and he is very much involved with lawn bowls and he very much enjoys being part of the Bribie Bowls Club who made us both feel very welcome from the first day. I then thought I better try to find something for myself, so I ventured out to U3A, joined a couple of things, did some volunteering for a while, but still wanted more to use the old brain cells and my life experience to contribute to the wider community. As we live in a manufactured home resort, I eventually found the Manufactured Home Owners Association Inc. (MHOA) website, became a member and then a member of the management committee. The Association is a nonprofit, volunteer, state-wide organization developed to help prevent unfair treatment of manufactured home owners. It is devoted to promote, advance, maintain and safeguard the combined and individual interests of manufactured home owners throughout Queensland. With a bit of mentoring, (which continues, from the president Errol) I have immersed myself in the Manufactured Home (Residential Parks) Act 2003, working on raising the

I hope for many years to contribute to the Queensland community and live in this amazing place we now call home. When it rains, most pets are more reluctant to go outside, even to toilet, which leads to a rash of bladder problems after bad weather. Our pets live side-by-side with us and suffer many of the same maladies… but that is the price of a soft, comfortable life! And we wouldn’t have it any other way…

The last few articles have been about what to feed your dog. If the dog has been fed cooked food and kibble here are some tips how to transition to a raw diet: • Introduce raw meat such as mince or muscle part in with his normal meal • In the beginning the ratio maybe 75% normal meal to 25% raw then over a few days decrease normal to 50/50 over a few days then the last part would be increase raw to 75%, normal meal 25% then 100%raw.
as kidney, heart to the raw meal maybe the ratio can be 5%. • After awhile when the dog is accepting his new meal then you can introduce other raw meats such as chicken, turkey, kangaroo. • It is important to check his faeces and to see if he has any reaction to the new food as some dogs can have an allergic reaction to one source of protein but not others. That’s why it is important to introduce one type of food at a time that way it helps to eliminate the culprit. Happy training, Yvonne

YELLOW-TAILED BLACK-COCKATOO – CALYPTORHYNCHUS FUNEREUS
N
By Marj Webber
ot long ago Yellowtailed Black-Cockatoos were quite uncommon on Bribie Island but recently they have been seen more frequently particularly in the state pine forests. Quite often while travelling on the Bribie Island Road near Ningi I have seen them flying overhead. So, keep watch and you might see them too. Yellow-tailed BlackCockatoos are large black birds 60-69 cm in length and weighing 620-900 g. They have yellow patches over their ears and large yellow feathers in their tails. On top of their heads are small black crests. Bills are large and strong designed for crushing and their feet have two toes in front and two toes at the back which allows for a strong grip. Males and females are slightly different with males having a pink eye ring and dark grey bill while females have a grey eye ring with a lighter coloured bill and a bigger yellow patch over their ears. In flight, their wings move in a slow,
44
floppy action. They keep contact during flight with mournful, screechy wails. Endemic to Australia, these Cockatoos are found from Rockhampton along a wide stretch of coast and slightly inland to the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and in Tasmania. Eucalypt forests, state forest plantations, and rain forests are favoured haunts. In some areas, they venture into suburbia and into parks and gardens. They are locally migratory in the search of food. Favourite foods are seeds mostly from native trees such as Banksia, Eucalypts, Casuarinas, Hakeas, Grass trees and Grevilleas. Insects are also eaten. It is common to see the Cockatoos holding their food with their feet while eating. Beetles and moth larvae are extracted from under the bark of wattle trees and with their strong bills they dig into the wood several centimetres to obtain this food. Over the years they have begun to feed on the exotic pinecones. In fact, in one area in South Australia, they have become quite reliant on these imported trees.

Their long breeding season begins in October and can extend through to May but is variable. Nests are built high up in large, old, tree hollows. Nest diameters are about 40cm and hollows from 1-2 m deep, so the hollows have to be very large indeed. The birds enter the hollows feet first. Two white eggs are laid on the woodchip nest floor and incubated by the female for about 28 days. During this time males feed the nesting females. One chick usually survives and is tended by the female for around 20 days. It is then cared for by both parents and remains in the nest for about 11 weeks and stays with them for about 6 months. After about 4 years the young
There are 6 species of Black-Cockatoos in Australia. It is believed that Black-Cockatoos evolved in Gondwanaland before it broke up. Naturalist George Shaw was the first to record the Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo in 1794. Their scientific name funereus means “dressed for a funeral” referring to their black coat. The genus name Calyptorhynchus is derived from two Greek words calyplos meaning “hidden” and rhynchos meaning “beak”. Black-Cockatoos are regarded as pests in some areas because they strip the young foliage and branches from the plantation Eucalypt and Pine trees. They also damage the bark on the trunks as they strip it off looking for larvae and beetles. Because of this, they were shot as pests in NSW until the 1940s. Because they need such large and mature trees to breed, usually over 200 years old, they are on the decline in some areas because of the clearing of old growth. This leaves them with less space to make their nests. Throughout their habitat areas, they are moderately common and listed as secure in most areas but in South Australia, they are recorded as vulnerable.

HISTORY
SHAPING BRIBIE’S FUTURE IN 1920’S By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society
I
In May 1904 a crowd of over 100 concerned people attended a meeting in Brisbane chaired by Queensland’s Deputy Governor Sir Hugh Nelson. The Vice President of Brisbane Snapper Club said “It had been apparent to Anglers that fishing was not what it used to be. Years ago anglers could go out with a certainty of catching fish, but this was not the case now”
Many large fish were caught off the recently constructed Jetty at Bongaree, including many huge Groper weighting many hundreds of kilos. But even in these early days, 100 years ago, there was evidence and concern about the depletion of fish stocks in Moreton Bay.
This led in the formation of the Amateur Fisherman’s Association of Qld.(AFA) In 1925 AFA purchased waterfront land on the recently subdivided Esplanade on Bribie Island and constructed a small Cottage and Clubroom. The building is still there today and although there have

Fishing boats towed to competition site been some renovations, it is still largely the same basic dormitory accommodation for AFA members. The building was named the J.Douglas Ogilby Cottage to honour the Ichthyologist and honorary curator of their extensive collection of Fishing memorabilia, books and specimen. Ogilby built up a large collection of fish specimens from the Bay which were preserved in glass spirit jars, and a selection of these can still be seen in the Seaside Museum today. In those years AFA Members were prominent politicians, public servants, and business men in Brisbane who came over on the Steamship Koopa most weekends and holidays to enjoy their shared sport. Travelling in three piece business suits, ties and hats, straight from their offices, they disembarked and walked up to the cottage where they changed into old fishing clothes and emerged as Tom, Dick and

Harry to merge with the holiday campers. Large Fishing Competitions were often conducted in the Bay and the Bribie AFA was regarded as the prime Fishing Club. On occasions up to 60 small boats, laden with up to 150 fishermen and all their gear, were towed together out to a nominated location in the Bay for a competition.
AFA Cottage 1925 Life continued during the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s but with the limitations brought by the Depression and WW2 , and by the 1960’s the population of Bribie island had grown to about 700 people, with many of these being Brisbane based with holiday homes on beautiful Bribie. The construction of the Bribie Bridge marked a significant change for
residents and visitors to Bribie, but the Fishing and relaxed lifestyle remained the unique attraction, despite the influx of motor vehicles and commercial development. In 1963 when Bridge was built Mr Joe Di Betta opened a new Café near the Jetty and offered to house the AFA fish collection to display for public viewing. This was enjoyed by many until the business was sold and collection of returned to AFA cottage to be stored in a garden shed. When I first viewed this extensive collection of bottled fish they had been virtually “boiling” in this shed for many years. When the new Seaside Museum opened a selection of the preserved Fish specimens in large glass jars was incorporated into the Museum display, and can still be seen today.
A ROAD to the OCEAN BEACH Bill Shirley served with the Australian Army Engineers in WW1 and after the war set up his own contracting business in Brisbane. In 1923 he was contracted to clear a bush track across Bribie Island from Bongaree Jetty to the Ocean beach for the first road to be constructed on the island.
When the track had been cleared the Developer, the Brisbane Tug & Steamship Co. contracted Blake Bros. to construct the first basis road, and Bill Shirley was appointed Construction Supervisor and when completed became the Tollkeeper and operated a basic bus service. Some Soldiers returning from overseas service in WW1 were allocated “Soldier settlement” blocks of land with a small cottage at Beerburrum, in the hope of scratching a living from the land trying to grow mostly Pineapples. First Road to Woorim 1924
This Government program proved to a nightmare for these families ,trying to cope with unpredictable climate ,rainfall and unproductive soil, and within a few years they were abandoned and the people moved elsewhere. Several of the soldier settlement cottages were then relocated to Bribie Island where new subdivisions were being created following the new road being built to Woorim. Bill Shirley was contracted to build another basic access road behind the beach and North Street was created in 1927. His payment for this work was to give him a few cottages. Bill Shirley and his wife and family moved to Bribie and became involved in several business opportunities in this increasingly popular destination. He operated the Bus Service, cut timber for public construction, became a House & Land Agent and full time representative of the Tug Co. His family then became proprietor of a large new timber Ocean Beach Guest House constructed behind the sand dunes near where the current Surf Club now stands.
Ocean Beach Guest House Advert It became a popular holiday destination and during WW2 was occupied by the Military. Within a few years the large sand dunes had started moving back and the beach erosion was significant, such that the complete two storey guest house building had to be moved back about 150 metres, and at the same time was extended and enlarged. The building was completely destroyed by fire in 1947. By the 1930’s Bill Shirley as regarded was the unofficial Mayor of Bribie and was appointed the first Honorary Councillor representing Bribie Island on the Caboolture Shire Council. To attend the monthly Council meeting in Caboolture was a three day trip in those days, before there were any roads anywhere near Bribie, and only access by water. HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
WHEN SOPHIA LOREN HOLDS COURT beautiful women of the 20th century and a major international sex symbol.
Promoting her book ‘WOMEN & BEAUTY’ – a book even making sense 35 years later in 2019 - Sophia sits tall and straight, her scarlet dress accentuating her rings, earrings, necklace and bracelets, worth a sheik’s ransom.

ehind a large semicircular glass table, at London’s Harvey Nichols department store, Sophia Loren is holding court. The Academy Award-winning 52-year-old actress, born in Rome, is still one of the most
The last of the classic screen’s goddesses shifts uneasily on her throne, as crowds have always frightened her. And crowds there are. Security guards for the dedicated fashion floor wing shuffle about, barely controlling the outer cordoned off area of fragile rope barriers as the crowds swell. And swell they do.
But the inner press barrier, allowing breathing space around the glass table soon topples, as 50 photographers shove and push, inching their way forward until they rest their elbows and cameras on the table itself, crouching between the knees of those still standing up, and shooting upward through the glass to get a closer shot. “Smile Sophia!” “Your hand on your chin, please.” “Throw your hair back Sophia!.” “Down here Miss Loren!” Puppet-like and a little tense she obeys each command, laughing, turning, smiling, catapulting her body from side to side and lashing her lower half, both ankles and knees constantly touching, fused like a mermaid’s fin. She is both the queen in control and the cornered tigress pushed against the wall. It’s only when the photographers finally leave, that Sophia’s shoulders drop and she visibly relaxes, while soft music plays in the background, interrupted only by the discordant till ringing out endlessly in staccato.
Are they going to run out of books?? People file past quietly and respectfully now, as if it were a state funeral, the endless queues clutching their hardbacks, approaching one by one, preening themselves for a private minute with their idol, and yet the atmosphere is warm Academy award for movie ‘Two Women’ 54

In London in the eighties when they actually chat with Sophia: teenagers, pensioners, young couples, middle-aged women, men on their own. For over two hours Sophia never stops writing - often lengthy messages - in hundreds of books. One girl has a second bite at the cherry with an extra three books. Sophia recognizes her, does not let on, smiles sincerely and genuinely with an aura of disciplined calm as she speaks to the girl at length and writes those extra three messages. Surveying Sophia at close quarters like this – millions around the world still think of her as the most beautiful woman of all (yours truly included) - is quite educational. The very long neck for which she was called ‘giraffe’ in school, is just a little wrinkled now. Small crease lines flash around the corners of the large mouth when she laughs. And Sophia Loren laughs a lot: To endorse a point? Embarrassment? Her overwhelming desire to please? Sometimes seemingly for no reason at all? The sweeping eyes too, show the odd line or two and the long nose is slightly hooked in profile. The grey in her hair is tinted out to a soft, deep auburn.
She flicks back her head, the long tresses of exceptionally fine hair falling casually and carelessly, but a look you darn well know takes many hours to create. Her nails are short and without coloured varnish, the hands and fingers slim and betraying a few sunspots. They are working hands. Her elegant makeup is barely visible except for heavy mascara enhancing those famous long lashes, and black eyeliner, softening to grey eye shadow. She seems exceptionally tall and slim, more than you would expect at 5’9”, but you can imagine the scrawny teenager who was nicknamed ‘stuzzi cadenti’ (toothpick) at school. As Sophia’s unorthodox beauty forms into the mosaic of the complete whole, not only does it outshine these individual
REGULAR FEATURE irregularities, but it exudes an aura of peace and tranquility that rises as much from within than without. The queues are now getting even longer instead if shorter and Sophia stretches her sore hand and fingers in between books, occasionally clenching her fist, obviously averting a cramp. There are now more and more fans depositing three and even five books on the glass table. And Sophia has the knack of anticipating the individuals’ moods and requests. So she just keeps writing and chatting with strangers she will never see again. The gentleness and calm with which she treats everyone around her including the fans, is not artificial. This proves to be her most outstanding quality, making her outward beauty so appealing and giving her a presence and charisma, time will not erode. But my time for an interview certainly has done so, as more and more copies are sold. Sophia’s entourage is hovering in the background. The publicity lady checks
her watch, making sure the star will not be late for the next of the 18 scheduled press, TV and radio appointments, neatly sandwiched into Sophia’s 48-hour stay in London. Her tall suave chauffeur is waiting for a wink of an
The beauty book of the eighties eye to rush her to the RollsRoyce waiting downstairs. So Sophia agrees to do my interview at Heathrow Airport the next day, while waiting for her plane to take her back home.

or the fourth year since its inception, the Contemporary Arts Practices Working Together Group at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre is presenting its annual Eclectica exhibition. Opening night, to which all are welcome, is Friday 28 June at 6 pm, but the display runs for almost three weeks from 25 June til 12 July.
In addition to the Eclectica art, this year’s showcase features monochrome landscapes, wearable art, encaustic work, revamped shoes and the promise of being unique, expressive, impressive and creative. Eclectica is the perfect name for the multimedia artistry of the CAP Group members. The word ‘eclectic’ describes
Membership in the Eclectica group is highly sought after due largely to the lively program and mandatory fun had by all. They have held two successful exhibitions at Vianta Espresso and Wine Bar in Beerwah during May this year and in 2018, the Wearable Art Fashion Parade in the Matthew Flinders Gallery in March, Island Fringe – a Bribie Perspective exhibition also in May at the Redcliffe Old Fire Station Gallery, and in September a joint exhibition called Both Ways with the Maleny Art Group.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH
THE ART OF RUNNING BY LORNA GROVES N
By Debra Mieth
o, not that sort of running, but making paint run onto a canvas in extraordinary ways. And I’m not giving too much away about the art of our Artist of the Month for July on the wall at the Bribie Community Arts Centre. Mostly because I don’t know much about it. However I did look it up to find there’s little more satisfying than using fluid art, liquid art, or acrylic pouring as it is variously called, to create abstract masterpieces by letting pigment run amok. This
form of abstract art uses acrylics with a runny consistency to create psychedelic paintings. There are endless possibilities and different ways, I learned, to combine the paint before spilling it across a surface. And it is why Lorna has called her exhibition Fluidity. Lorna Groves was very excited upon first seeing fluid art, and knew immediately it was the type of art she wanted to pursue, having always preferred abstractions. She can also be found lately enjoying another fluid medium – watercolours, with the U3A class. South African born and raised, Lorna has proudly called Bribie home for 30 years. Arriving on our continent in 1974 on a work visa and job transfer, she knew no one in Australia and was unimpressed at a job downgrade. But with an attitude change, she decided the world was her oyster and never looked back. Lorna Groves

Always having an appreciation for the creative arts, eight years ago Lorna joined a U3A art class ‘to give it a go’. A decision was made that her family would see as many travelling art exhibitions as possible. So as part of their education, Lorna ensured her children were thoroughly immersed in the art world as she enjoyed every exhibition they could visit. Lorna’s son lives in Oslo, Norway, but I am absolutely certain it is not to avoid being dragged to art shows by his mother! For Oslo has what must be the most inspiring sculpture garden in the world. there. Oh to have a mother who appreciates art as does this lady. The exhibition will be on the wall at the Arts Centre, 191 Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach, throughout the month with Lorna’s Artist of the Month talk on Friday 12 July. Morning tea will be served afterwards. Bookings for catering purposes can be made by ringing 3408 9288.

How and when to contact police
I
t has come to the attention of Police that community members are delaying in reporting crime through police channels and are instead taking to social media in the first instance. We would like to remind everyone to report crime through an appropriate police monitored avenue as soon as possible, in order to improve our ability to respond in a timely manner. Social media may let your friends and family know what happened, but it doesn’t help with police investigations. Knowing when to contact police and how to contact them has changed over the years, gone are the days of having only one number to call to report crimes occurring in your neighbourhood. Please read the below for a refresher on what sort of crime to report where.
Triple Zero: The most obvious of these is the traditional Triple Zero call. This number is to be used only if there is an emergency happening right now and you need urgent police attendance. Crime Stoppers and Policelink are suitable for any other non-urgent or emergency related crime or suspicious activity reporting. Other avenues: Whilst utilising social media forums to report suspicious behaviours can be seen to have its convenient advantages, this is not a correct avenue for reporting crime. Police do not benefit from any information outside of the above-listed avenues or by directly contacting your local police. By sticking to reporting tools and numbers as listed on the QPS website, the police can better serve the community and respond to incidents in a timely manner. If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day. You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersqld.com.au 24hrs per day.

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FOR J U L Y By Oscar Cainer
Discover why JULY has so many opportunities. Call 1900 959 005.
CANCER (June 23 July 23)
TAURUS (April 21 May 21)
No wonder so many ancient kings made themselves Sun Gods. It must be amazing to be the Sun; at the centre of everything, with all the other planets twirling as they circle around you at their varying speeds and distances. You’d be able to watch the patterns unfolding and repeating, knowing that you were the cause of this great cosmic dance. Yet you’d also be powerless to stop it. The drama evolving around you has an air of inevitability about it. Luckily, you can just allow it to happen. It will resolve itself. JULY is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1900 959 005 Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. Remember when albums used to be musical journeys, building crescendos and creating light and shade? These days, when most people only listen to the hits, musicians put their best songs first. Since July begins with a powerful Solar Eclipse, how can the rest of the month hope to compare? Actually, with a Lunar Eclipse 62
and an astrological ‘kite’ formation, and Mercury turning retrograde before converging with the Sun and Venus, the opening fanfare will grab our attention, but the whole playlist is worth listening to. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Life, as Macbeth tells us, is ‘a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing’. In a month packed full of astrological action, it’s worth remembering Shakespeare’s words. As you witness dramatic moves and questionable

With a Solar Eclipse heralding an action-packed astrological July, it’s time to break the rules, challenge tradition and question the norms. Well… some of them! This month, there are certain forces that you shouldn’t and mustn’t ignore or defy. Although you’re being gifted with strength and power, you’re not going to turn into an actual superhero. So, you need to assess what you can and can’t do; be respectful of boundaries that won’t shift, and focus on what’s possible. Then, success is guaranteed. There is inspiring news in your in-depth JULY forecast. Call 1900 959 005. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) Why consult your forecast for the month when you just could toss a coin? Surely, if the cosmos wants to guide you in a certain direction, it can send you hundreds of signs to point you the right way. Come to mention it… that’s exactly what it is doing! That’s something I can confidently tell you. I also know that you already know the answer to your most important question. You just need to find enough self-confidence to trust what your heart’s telling you and be guided by it. Do that and you won’t go wrong.
Your in-depth forecast for the whole of JULY can really help. Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) This month, which begins with a powerful Solar Eclipse, promises to take you on an adventure. Yet, you can’t set off on an escapade and then start to moan when your life starts to get challenging. So, make sure that you investigate before throwing yourself head first into a venture. You don’t want to trick yourself, or be misled by anyone into making the wrong choice. You don’t have to remain implicated in a drama that’s already started to unfold either. Look for something that looks positive. Then, enjoy it! In JULY, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 September 23) They tell us that ‘to err is human and to forgive’… well in order to do that we need to be superhuman. Don’t even think about the advantages of having super-strength, or the ability to fly. You already have the power you need to be able to turn July into a month that you’ll remember. It comes from the magical combination of your sensitivity and your compassion. Be encouraged by the energy of the Solar Eclipse. In order for miracles to happen, you just need to be prepared to go with the flow and let go. JULY brings great potential for change. Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 October 23) Success isn’t just about hard work. You can pedal as hard as you like on a bike, but if the chain has slipped off the wheel, you
won’t get anywhere. Yet, if this were to happen at the top of a hill, you’d be able to coast to your destination, without having to put in any effort at all. This month, you can be inspired by the energy of the Solar Eclipse, and easily work out a strategy to cope with an unsatisfactory scenario. And, when you apply your mind to matters of the heart, you’ll find an easy route to the destination you desire. Four minutes on the phone can make JULY special. Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 November 22) Ta-dah! Here’s a top hat. I’m going to wave my magic wand and produce a rabbit! Now, here’s a tiny seed. I’m going to plant it in the earth and it will become a tree! The first of these is a magic trick; an illusion, and the second is an oftrepeated miracle – just part of the repertoire of our planet’s greatest magician, Mother Nature. Her tricks aren’t always fast, but they’re very productive. July, which begins with a powerful Solar Eclipse, brings opportunities to set wonderful things in motion. Give them space to grow. Inspiring times await you in JULY. Call your NEW forecast: 1900 959 005.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) July brings clarity where there’s been uncertainty. The month kicks off with a powerful Solar Eclipse which brings new understanding and enables you to start putting down roots and building stronger foundations. The sense of having to rush is slipping away, and you can take your time to make key decisions. Rose-tinted spectacles have never been your style; you prefer to see things as they truly are. So the undeniable feeling of romance you’ll experience this month can be acted upon with confidence. Be ready for the magic on offer to you in JULY. Call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) We hear people declaring that great changes are about to happen in their lives and we watch new beginnings unfold. Yet you’re not impressed by announcements. You have much more faith in action than promises. Yet the Solar Eclipse at the start of July heralds an exciting suggestion which is worth paying attention to. A delightful surprise is coming into your life which will begin to turn the wheels of change. Even though everything
won’t be turned around, something wonderful is about to start afresh.
Don’t miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for JULY. Call 1900 959 005.
JULY brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1900 959 005.
PISCES (February 20 March 20)
AQUARIUS (January 21 February 19) If you’re worrying that you’ve been pushing your luck too far recently, July brings reassurance. You could sit back and stop pushing and you’d still find yourself heading in the right direction. You know where you want to be, and you know the best route to get there. You’re willing and able to do everything within your power to assure success. But, with such a powerful cosmic helping hand coming your way, there’s a chance that your efforts could slow the process down. Take time to relax this month.
Sheridan Blanchard
Over the course of July, you’ll re-establish control in an area of your life that’s been out of balance for a while. The Solar Eclipse at the start of the month brings the realisation that you can no longer pour your valuable energy into trying to maintain the status quo. It’s your sense of loyalty which has made you feel responsible for something, and you don’t want to let anyone down. Yet, as a wave of change reshapes the landscape, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Most things in your life are more right than you think. Your in-depth forecast for JULY is ready. Call 1900 959 005.

Coast Guard Mooloolaba received a MAYDAY call from a 5.2-metre vessel, rapidly taking on water at Caloundra 9 Mile, some 14km off the coast just after 1.30am Sunday morning and a major rescue operation was launched before dawn. Nine search vessels including VMR Bribie Island, Coast Guards Mooloolaba, Caloundra and Redcliffe, and the Water Police, Rescue helicopters and a search plane were scrambled. The search started off the coast of Caloundra before the sun came up and just before 8 am they were spotted by a tanker anchored off-shore and helped guide authorities to their location. The Rescue 500 Helicopter airlifted the young child and took him for medical assistance to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and transferred to Queensland Children’s Hospital, in an induced coma, for further treatment. The two men were taken to shore by vessel and subsequently to hospital and were treated for hypothermia and released on Monday. Paramedics say help arrived just in time, but that the boy’s helicopter rescue could have made his condition worse. “They were they’re all very lucky,” Queensland Ambulance Service supervisor Kristy MacAlister said.
The boy “was suffering from hypothermia because he had been in the water for quite some time. It is always a delicate operation when you’re winching a patient that’s potentially suffering from hypothermia because, as you winch them out of the water, the wind temperature can also decrease the body temperature further.” After their boat sank, the trio was forced to tread water for around six hours. Both adults took turns holding the boy out of the water in an attempt to save him from freezing conditions. It is understood that no one was wearing a life jacket and that they clung to buckets they grabbed as the vessel sank. There was also no EPIRB activated. Even though they had logged on with Coast Guard Mooloolaba, the area Caloundra 9 Mile is a very large area to search in an emergency.
Above and below search vessels comb the area searching for the missing trio.

Rescue 500 Helicopter winches the child aboard.
Lessons to be learnt from this tragedy • Always wear your life jackets, or, have them in a position where you can access them very quickly at the last minute. • In open water always have an EPIRB, which when activated shows your exact location – saving valuable time when a rescue is required. • When logging on give as accurate location as possible, and update location when moving to another area. • Always prepare for the unexpected, especially at night. All boats operating beyond smooth and partially smooth waters must carry a 406MHz digital EPIRB when more than 2nm from land or when they are more than 2nm from the limits of partially smooth waters.

plus safety and general boating information sessions; regular social events; reimbursement up to $100/per year for tows by other VMR or Coastguard units;
Lots of boaters still have their jackets still in their original packaging – this leads to lack of effective inspection and the deterioration of the straps. It also makes it difficult to fit in an emergency. The bottom line – life jackets should not be stowed and forgotten. They are difficult for a novice to put on in an emergency, and then it’s too late to realise they are inappropriate for the intended person in that emergency. Skippers should inspect each before each trip, show all passengers how to wear and have them easily accessible for use, preferably worn.

As the water temperature drops over winter, the sharks also become less of a problem with literally no fish getting taken by sharks. Where in summer you sometimes have to move a few times a day to escape the taxman. The whales also at the moment are making their annual trip up the east coast so always be aware of whales when fishing offshore overnight. Generally, we always keep an eye on whale migration movements as more than usual they will travel reasonably close to one another and travel up the east coast around certain depth and contour lines. Always keep a good eye out when anchoring up at night offshore, we try and

Try lightly weighted pillies on 2 or 3, 3/0 gang hooks with swivels in between. Drifting around floatlining pillies is a great way to catch a feed of tailor. Also, keep an eye on birds diving and feeding on bait as this generally is where the tailor are. The longtail tuna are heading back up north at present also, with a few schools coming into the passage to feed on the bait schools and the mullet. Yes, we do longtail tuna in the passage. Along with the longtail I have caught mack tuna, spotted mackerel and even an 8kg Spanish mackerel taken in the passage. Muddies quietening off a bit but still a couple hanging around.

Bogged SUV stuck in a rut The inland track is well packed down and relatively easy to travel as a result of the recent rain however with these great rains we come to another problem. As can be seen in the photo when lots of vehicles travel in the same tracks the rut gets deeper and deeper coupled with the fact that these rains have lifted the level of the water table, water breaks through the bottom of the track which soon turns to mud. Here is the simple fix, if you notice the tracks getting deep, make a new track before the water comes up. Members from the Bribie Island Historical Society (pictured) joined us on tour last week, extremely learned folk, it was great for us to share and to learn from them, one can never know everything, thanks, Barry and members.

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours.
The beach is a pleasure to drive, the washouts or scalloping is minimal, just watch your tide, only travel up to two hours before the top of the tide and don’t start until two hours after the top of the tide. Make sure you have an appropriate vehicle to tackle the tracks or you will need recovery, an SUV with low profile tyres is never going to do it.

TIGER PRIDE AS CUBS CONNECT IN ALDI MINIROOS ROUND By Wendy Ennor Photo Credits: Dan Clancy and Jacob Hernandez
O
n Friday 14 June, Bribie Island Tigers celebrated the inaugural ALDI MiniRoos Round by having some of their next generation take the pitch in curtain-raisers ahead of the club’s senior games. President Dan Clancy said, “this event not only showcases our players, but it shines a light on how great the ALDI Miniroos program is.” Focused on fun, games are played in a relaxed environment where the aim is to teach new skills in an enjoyable way, allowing players to develop at their
SPORT own pace. The smaller field size, modified rules and fewer players’ means there are more opportunities to touch the ball, increasing the likelihood of an overall positive experience. “That the Tigers continue to go from strength to strength and 2019 will not be any different to our last few seasons,” he said. The club’s competition teams are on track to reach the finals with the Senior Men poised to finish the season on top of the ladder. Dan said, “right now our Senior Men are undefeated in 2019 and we couldn’t be prouder. We’ve seen this team really come together under the guidance of Coach Craig Davey and I’m confident that this team will take it all the way to the Grand Final.” “Our Senior Women, under the leadership of Brad
Litchfield, keep their form from the last two seasons and are also on track to finish in the top two. I know that the whole club will be cheering on this team to be Grand Finalists in 2019,” he said. “I’m also excited about the strong season our under 15 and under 12 teams are having. With only about ten weeks of the season left, Bribie Tigers is certainly punching above their
U11 Black weight in the Sunshine Coast Football Competition. I would not be surprised if there were more entries in our hall of fame for 2019,” Dan said. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the teams at their home games. Just bring a chair and a blanket. Keep an eye on the Tigers Facebook Page for all the details.

SOCCER Match Report for Senior Women Game – written by Brad Litchfield Friday’s match against Cooroora FC at home was a great game. The ladies dug in deep, but a couple of injuries to key players opened the door for Cooroora who came away with a 4-1 win. The club is very proud of the Tigress’s efforts. Player of the match goes to our midfielder Chelsea Falzon for an outstanding effort and a cracking goal.

YOUR SAY Nineteen, Black Hole and Dear Editor, Deal the Crib”. I would like to that you All versions are played for publishing both my at U3A ’s Cribbage Class grandfather, Ron Patterson (Monday 8.30 – 10.30), and great Grandparents players are so keen many Kettlewell stories. attend as early as 8 am I am doing a large amount when U3A opens. of family research for my

If you are a Cribbage player and have not experienced the variations of the original game consider joining the class by becoming a member of U3A.
Charlie (Cribbage Tutor) Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
I am not an historian, nor am I particularly well educated, but I feel bound to suggest a correction ought to be made, not only to the article by Barry Clark in the recent Issue 89 of The Bribie Islander, but also to the Wikipedia information on the internet.
Like many people, he was told the wrong story by his school teachers.
My understanding of the naming of The Glasshouse Mountains by Captain Cook, learnt in primary school, grade three (1957), was, the mountains on the horizon, glinting in the early morning sun (from the evening frost) reminded him of the English countryside ‘Glasshouses’ (or what might commonly be referred to as hothouses or greenhouses). My sincere apologies if it can be shown I am mistaken with my recollection of that particular history lesson, but I do get concerned, on occasion, when incorrect historical detail is accidentally or intentionally published and correct historical detail is lost, quite possibly, forever. Kind regards, Les Oldmeadow. Editor’s Note: Thanks Les. I vaguely recall this myself so sought Barry’s clarification. Barry’s reply is below. 78
It is a common misconception that is often heard. James Cook named the distant horizon shape “THE GLASSHOUSES” …..he didn’t use the term “Mountains” …..because they reminded him of the distinct shape of the Glass Furnace Kilns in his homeland. Glass is made from sand, fired to melt the silica. This style of Glassmaking Kilns was common in James Cooks time.
Banksia Garden Club Inc. was recently included in a High Tea hosted by the Year 10 Hospitality students of Bribie High School. Eighteen club members were in attendance and were very impressed with the presentation by the students as well as the delicious food prepared for the occasion. It was wonderful to witness the efforts by all to welcome Banksia Garden Club Inc. to the school and as President may I take this opportunity to send a big Thank You to all concerned. Merrilyn Cullen - President, Banksia Garden Club
daughter and 10 nieces and their families. They have been so excited and proud to read about their family and also the amazing Bribie Island. I have wonderful memories as a child and visits to Bribie to see my Dad and Aunt Estelle over the years. Wonderful to have this information recorded for future generations. Many thanks Jan Chamberlain (Patterson) Dear Editor, Thank you so much for the article and photo that you included in this week’s edition of The Bribie Islander for the Australian Community Workers Association. Your coverage was very much appreciated. Kay Benson, Member - ACWA
Glass was an expensive commodity and was not used to construct large Hothouses or Greenhouses. This is what they look like. Barry Clark Dear Editor, I am a Tutor at U3A (University of the 3rd Age) and take a class that plays this entertaining card game. Whilst Cribbage has its roots back in the 16th Century it has remained a highly popular card game in England, Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Over the years many variations have developed including – “Pick up Winner, Pick up Loser,
