RENEWABLE ENERGY IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE? W

hen a sand mining executive looks you squarely in the eye and proclaims to you that “climate change is real” I think it is worth pausing and reflecting on how far we have come as a society. Clearly not enough space in this column or magazine in fact to debate the pros and cons of the climate change debate. For some, the debate is over and certainly, this seems to be the case for the key executives running one of the most successful local businesses in the region based at Ningi, Southern Pacific Sands (SPS). The company is currently going through the permissions process to develop up a significant solar PV power generation farm at Ningi. Will Harrison, SPS’s Chief Operating Officer, explains in our cover story on page 6

the business case for going solar powered by creating a state of the art utility scale Solar PV plant with a capacity of up to 50MW (DC) is more than just economic. The fact that when the plant, if approved, becomes operational at the end of 2020 will be able to supply up to 95GWh of green electricity per annum - equivalent to the consumption of approximately 14,000 households is hugely significant for the region. We will watch with interest the progress of this development and more widely the changing attitudes towards being a little kinder to the planet by harnessing renewable energy. Time will tell where Australia will feature on the world stage with this technology.

Well for many business owners the start of the new financial year holds much promise and an expectation of brighter times ahead. For many of us, it means a tax refund is in the wind if we have managed to keep all of our claimable receipts safely stored away to give to the taxman.

It is, however, appropriate timing to announce our own changes at The Bribie Islander. Good news and sad news. I am happy to announce that the founder and owner of this publication will be stepping back into the editor’s chair to oversee the next development phase of the magazine. Sadly we farewell our intrepid advertising manager Jodi Doe who is moving onto other opportunities while I will be relishing the challenge and new role of helping local business as I take up the reigns of the advertising manager position. Readers, as always enjoy this Issue #91.

COVER STORY far north as Townsville and south to Ballina.

BRIBIE’S SOLAR ENERGY REVOLUTION

T

here is a quiet renewable energy revolution taking place at Ningi being developed by a local company that is set to become another energy producer in Australia’s growing electricity grid.

It is little wonder then that large-scale solar electricity production is continuing to rapidly expand in Australia and is getting the interest of socially and environmentally responsible businesses.

To give this story some context, did you know that Australia has the highest average solar radiation per square metre of any continent in the world?

One such company that is embracing and developing this renewable solar electricity technology into a large scale solar PV plant is forward-thinking, Ningi

based company Southern Pacific Sands (SPS). According to the Chief Operating Officer of the local business, Will Harrison, SPS is a wholesale supplier of quality washed silica sands, bio-retention filtration medium and AS4419 soil products available in bulk, primarily servicing Brisbane and South East Queensland (SEQ) but with customers as

Sheridan Blanchard

Established in 1993 on a high-quality silica sands deposit, Will says Southern Pacific Sands has built a reputation of providing highquality silica sand, soil products and timely service, providing a truly independent supply source of wholesale washed and classified sands to relevant industry customers. In fact the company will soon be expanding its operation into concrete with the opening of their soon to be commissioned concrete batching plant. This very successful construction materials business is now looking to deliver for the greater Moreton Bay Region a state of the art utility scale Solar PV plant with a capacity of up to 50MW (DC).

DON’T DRIVE BY - CALL IN FOR SUPER SPECIALS!! According to The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) renewable energy is produced using natural resources that are constantly replaced and never run out. Solar energy is energy created by the heat and light of the sun. Solar power is produced when this energy is converted into electricity or used to heat air, water, or other substances. Will says that the business was looking to reduce the electricity costs and carbon footprint of their operations and, as they own a large tract of clear land, they thought a large solar project was worth pursuing. He says that SPS has commenced the public consultation as part of the Development Approval process with the Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) aiming to obtain approval in the coming months. “While many utility-scale solar projects are built in rural areas and far from where the electricity is needed, the SPS Ningi project is favourably located adjacent to an existing Energex powerline in between the load centres of Caboolture and Bribie Island,” said Will. “When operational the project will supply up to

95GWh of green electricity per annum - equivalent to the consumption of approximately 14,000 households,” he said. Will said that the construction of the project and the assembly of more than 100 000 solar modules will take about 10 months and will create up to 100 construction jobs. “If all the planning approvals and power applications, connection agreements and purchase power agreements happen as we anticipate and the construction gets underway end of the first quarter in 2020 we should be on track for commercial operation by late 2020,” he said. Will says that while the project stacks up economically, it is just as important for business leaders today to be ensuring that they take every opportunity that presents itself to be as environmentally and socially responsible as possible. This was also a big consideration when deciding to proceed. So by late 2020 the power you consume here on Bribie and the nearby mainland suburbs may just be being produced by this innovative and forward thinking local business.

headache for their Minister Mark Bailey by igniting such a passionate response among the good folk of Bribie? Well, when an engineering solution causes a political problem guess what happens next! That’s right - a political directive that orders said engineers to put matters right. The Bribie Islander magazine was given exclusive media access with Minister Bailey when he recently came up to Bribie to meet with a group of interested locals to announce his solution. Among those being told the news that morning were Ali King, Rod Moffatt, Adrienne Isnard and Fred and Sue Brown.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said Bribie Island residents had shown how much they love the island’s pelicans, and the new solution would ensure the pelicans could continue to roost on the bridge without damaging the lights.

“After residents told me concerns earlier this year, I asked the department to look at solutions. I’m pleased that crews will now install dedicated roosting platforms for the pelicans on the bridge so residents and visitors can continue to enjoy their presence as they drive along the bridge,” Mr Bailey said. “Unfortunately, road crews were constantly replacing lights on the bridge that were damaged by waste from the pelicans sitting on top of them. “It often meant workers replacing the lights also needed to partially close traffic lanes,

“It’s great that we’ve been able to come up with a solution that means the birds can continue to roost on the bridge, while retaining the energy efficient LED lights that are providing better, safer lighting and reducing ongoing maintenance costs.” If the reaction to our post that we immediately put up on the Bribie Islander website after being told the news is anything to go by, the people of Bribie are overwhelmingly positive on hearing the news. Yes, there is politics involved but at least this win can be chalked up to people power!

‘TEACH THE TEACHER’ FUNDING - ROTARY HELPS OUR SCHOOLS! By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary

T

he Rotary Club of Bribie Island has received a Rotary District Grant to assist with the training of teachers at the three Island schools and St Michael’s College, Caboolture. Rotary District grants are used to fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in local communities and communities abroad. Clubs apply to their District for funding by completing an application form and each district chooses which activities it will fund with these grants. Congratulations to immediate past President 20

John Oxenford who completed the 16-page application form! A mean feat all by itself. The funding will allow us to engage the services of ‘Coding Kids’ a Brisbane based organisation ‘passionate about shaping the next generation of innovators, creators, and change makers.’ Coding Kids will provide a series of professional development workshops for staff responsible for the delivery of the Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program. By providing this funding we will support the ongoing STEM Challenge program at Bribie Island State High School (BISHS) and its goal of raising

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

STEM literacy for all students. The funding will help build a team of STEM-capable teachers and thus increase the use of STEM technologies within curriculum units. The training will allow the teachers to make better use of STEM-related equipment which is presently under utilised. With trained confident teachers, interest in STEM-related subjects within BISHS and the other schools associated with the STEM Challenge will continue to grow. Students learn coding, programming and game and website development. The knowledge they develop through these studies will give them the IT skills required for future employment.

Both the Queensland Government and the Australian Government recognise that STEM proficiency is vital to ensuring the country’s economic wellbeing. ‘The Australian Government regards high-quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education as critically important for our current and future productivity, as well as for informed personal decision making and effective community, national and global citizenship’. A recent report from the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) emphasised the importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and said ‘One in two jobs in Australia will require high-level programming and IT skills within 15 years.’ It also suggested that ‘within the next two to five years 90 per cent of the workforce would need IT proficiency to stand any chance of landing a new job.’ So, STEM isn’t just a thing for students in classrooms, it has become important not only to job seekers, but to everyone as we develop into a more technological and innovation dependent world. A world where information and knowledge flows and is shared like never before. Notwithstanding STEM, however, as a student of the humanities, I have to ask that studies of this equally important field not be overlooked to advance our understanding of STEM. The question of morals and ethics must also play a role

with STEM. The debate has gone on for thousands of years regarding moral and ethical behaviour - from the times of Socrates and Plato 2,500 years ago through Immanuel Kant, who 300 years ago asked ‘What can we know?’ and answered that our knowledge is constrained to mathematics and the science of the natural, actual world, to today. ‘Morality’ generally relates to how we might live our life; while ‘ethics’ tends to refer to the codes of conduct governing social interactions. Morals, ethics, and law overlap, to a degree, and help instruct how our lives are lived today. Richard Lachman from Ryerson University, perhaps said it best in his article in ‘The Conversation’, ‘I believe we need our educational system to engage students with issues of ethics and

Bribie High School student Kiani Jazz was definitely one of the highlights but when she was joined onstage for her final number by former Bribie High student Jay Bushby, now a recording artist, it was really perfect. Kiani is a talented young lady and she has plans for her future, much like Jay was, 8-9 years ago. Both Kiani and Jay have music up on YouTube if you would like to see what we mean. Jay went on after school to Music College and the rest is history. Kiani Jazz is the next born star of Bribie

LOCALS ONLY Last Sunday of the Month 1PM-5PM

It was a day for Bands with Gonzo Zonk, under a flu-ey cloud, showed you can’t keep a good band down. For those who were looking forward to one certain song, next month. Good work, guys. Every now and again, organisers receive a phone call out of the blue, from Mick Hearn, to let them know that he’s back in town, so arrangements are made to get his mates together for Locals. The band, 4 on the Floor are a very tight bunch of musos who filled the dancefloor almost immediately... and left the crowd anticipating the next time.

The sun came out and so did the crowd, Bluey’s beer garden was at maximum capacity. A new band, The Mangroves, will be regulars on the show, after their debut yesterday. A highly skilled band of musicians, they also kept the crowd rocking. The day was rounded out just on sunset, by the 3pce Kevin Dutton Band who have to be seen to be believed. Kevin, Jamie on drums and Lonesome Dave Moore on bass had the dancefloor screaming for another song... these guys were just perfect and we’ll be seeing more of them in the coming months. The next Locals Only Show is on the 28th July beginning at 1 pm. Bring a blanket in case there are no more chairs as was the case yesterday.

WINELANDER

A

few weeks ago we noted the contribution that Mr Tom Angove made to the Australian wine industry when he invented the first wine cask in 1965 which after some improvements went on to introduce thousands of consumers to the pleasures of wine drinking Australians, if you have Foxtel and have access to the history channel keep your eyes open for a programme on this invention in one of the segments ‘Australian inventions that changed the world’ where his son John Angove discusses how it all came about. I received an email from a reader enquiring about serving an aged wine and it had me thinking about whether to let a wine breath just remove the cap or cork or decant a red wine or not and does age matter? A friend has an aerator, which after removing the cap you stick the aerator in the top and simply pour the wine into your glass. He carries out this manoeuvre regardless of age and swears the wine is

always improved and this is certainly a process which you need to adopt with wines that are older than 5 years and only red wines because as they age they often develop sediment, which isn’t the case with white wines.

sediment isn’t very pleasant if left in the wine. You have just aerated the wine so you don’t really need to leave it for very long and the older the wine the quicker it will start to spoil, now is the time to enjoy your purchase or cellaring.

Just removing a cap or cork really isn’t a successful way of letting a wine breath because of the size of the neck of the bottle so If you don’t possess an aerator don’t despair simply use an empty clean glass container which holds more liquid than the bottle or a decanter should you have one. Stand the bottle up for a couple of hours still sealed with the cork or screw top, this will allow any sediment to sink to the bottom of the bottle, then remove the enclosure being very careful if it is a cork as there is a good chance an old cork will break up if you attack it too aggressively. Very carefully and slowly pour the wine into your glass container and if there is any sediment in the bottle it will show as a vein towards the end of pouring, stop pouring as the

Another friend who always enjoyed a rum and coke after work to relax after his days’ labours decided to try and develop a taste for wine so Shiraz was his choice, which I think was a very brave way to start your journey of wine enjoyment. As a Rule I wouldn’t mention Nick by name but I think a more gentle introduction to the pleasures of wine drinking would have been the way, maybe a Merlot, a Rose, even something either fruitier or even sweeter for a while then move up the scale to a Cabernet Merlot or even a Pinot Noir from The Great Southern of Western Australia which tend to have overtones of strawberries. Anyway, Nick went full throttle and tells me he is getting to grips with his new found joy but

By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au I have suggested that he should track down a Shiraz/ Viognier as they tend to be a little softer than a straight Shiraz. Actually Viognier is a white wine grape variety but a small amount of around 5% has a softening effect on Shiraz and for a time was on almost every label but I think many wine drinkers were put off with this addition to the label so it has started to disappear off the labels but I think it probably is still in the wine. Australia probably has the most flexible rules when it comes to winemaking because unlike the French and Italians who in certain areas try to protect their appellations with very strict rules about what is actually planted in the vineyards and control which grapes go into the bottles. Here in Australia as long as one grape variety amounts to 85% of the wine in the bottle winemakers can blend the other 15% with whatever grape varieties they want without showing them on the label, or even where the grapes came from and still name it after one region.

WINELANDER opened a vineyard in the Each country that produces late 1990’s. wine has varieties that suit the climate more than The Napa Valley California: others and tend to be the I love this region as it has wines which are promoted the ability to produce many more than others. Here are outstanding wines including a few examples if you want Chardonnay, Cabernet to experiment a bit. Sauvignon and Merlot Argentina: Malbec is the primary grape variety grown here and Mendoza is the region to look for if you want to try the best red wines.

however to experience something different go for a Zinfandel which is a grape variety that stands out from this region but go for the red variety.

Spain: Tempranillo grapes are grown throughout Spain but the best red wines to look for are named Rioja and have several classifications.

This week I found a fabulous Jim Barry Watervale 2018 Riesling at BWS which had a cost of $20. I suppose I was impressed with the medals on the label and the history of Jim Barry Rieslings which have always been top draw. Unlike red wines which are submitted to shows often from the best barrel in the winery white wines come out of large stainless steel tanks so you should be buying a wine that is the same as the medal-winning wine which has won a swag of awards from all over the country. The wine is bone dry, has citrus aromas of lemons and limes which would certainly suit seafood or spicy Asian dishes, give it a try.

Reserva: The period of aging in oak barrels and bottles must be a minimum of three years with a minimum of twelve months in the barrel. Gran Reserva: These wines must spend a minimum of 2 years in oak barrels supplemented with an aging in the bottle for at least three years. South Africa: The local red grape variety is Pinotage which can be a bit hit and miss either making superb wines or pretty ordinary wines. Since the removal of apartheid winemakers have been free to plant whatever varieties they want, whereas before many restrictions were in place, and there are very good Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons and Shiraz being made. South Africa has some of the oldest planted vineyards in the world and many of our grape varieties, especially in Western Australia, came from this region. South Africa is well regarded for producing very good Chenin Blanc although again it is buyer beware as many vineyards produce a sweet style of this variety. The main wine growing district is Stellenbosch, look out for wines from Ernie Ells who

y name is Heenam Kim, I am an EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) therapist. I have a had health store in Bribie Island since 2017. It is called ‘Bribie Simply Healthy’. EFT is a form of ‘energy psychology’. The EFT technique can be used to treat a wide variety of physical and psychological disorders and used as a simple form of selfadministered therapy. By stimulating acupuncture meridian points significant improvement in psychological problems may occur. EFT tapping is an effective combination of mind-body medicine and acupressure techniques. The underlying principle of EFT is that all emotions and thoughts are forms of energy; this energy, whether positive or negative has a very real physical manifestation that affects all functions of the body. While the human body possesses a natural healing potential, stress and emotional problems can stand in the way, which is where EFT comes in. People who experience benefits from practising tapping techniques find that it helps clear their mind focus their attention on the present moment, and improve their attitude so they have a better chance of overcoming challenges they may face. EFT can help with chronic pain relief. There are various symptoms of chronic pain, including mild to severe sensations

Our human DNA is the same but each individual person expresses this differently. Our emotional imbalances and stress are factors of illness if not dealt with in the right manner. Those unsolved trapped emotions stay in our energy system and eventually will manifest into mental and physical symptoms. Through our lives, we experience emotional blows and traumas. Then these negative emotions are injected into the subconscious level of our energy system and stored in cells. Whenever we are stressed the traumatic experience may be relived. Then the emotional virus is activated in our program and after many years they often cause various forms of health problems.

NATURE Micro Bat have two more as a bonus with their extraordinary navigation skills and echolocation expertise being added assets. They use their eyesight and their echolocation skills to detect their prey and find their way in the dark. Each night they consume about 50% of their body weight eating many of our insect pests. Bats are the only flying mammals in the world. They sleep during the day and can be found hanging upside down in caves, tunnels, hollow trees, under tree bark or anywhere it is dark and safe and in this case under a garden umbrella. They are unable to stand and must hang either upside down or hang from their thumbs. Most of their calls are so high pitched that they cannot be detected by the human ear. Wings are hairless and transparent.

MICRO BATS

Being a mammal, they give birth to a single baby and hang by their thumbs

while birthing and toileting. The young feed on their mother’s milk. Generally, they live in colonies. The smallest Bat in the world is found in Thailand and weighs only two grams. There are about 1000 species of bats in the world with around 77 species in Australia and 43 of these are listed as threatened with many of the Micro Bat species on the list. In Australia, there are around 60 different species of Micro Bats with SE Queensland hosting about 30 species. Feral cats, pythons and owls are their main predators. Loss of habitat and disruption of roosting sites are added factors to the decline of some species. It is unwise to touch any Bat as some of them carry a virus which is very harmful to humans. If you find an injured Bat ring Wildcare Australia SEQ at 07 5527 2444 or Bat Conservation and Rescue Qld at 0488 228 134.

here are two types of bats - Mega Bats and Micro Bats. Mega Bats are large and Micro Bats are small being 4-16 cm in length and weighing 3-150 grams and make up about 70% of all bats. Just recently I was alerted to the fact that two Micro Bats had made their daytime home under a friend’s garden umbrella. I carefully photographed them trying not to disturb them too much. They had brown fur and were about 9.5 cm in length which is rather large for a Micro Bat. They have been making their daily visits to the umbrella for about six weeks. We were unable to identify the Micro Bats from the

photographs, so I sent the images to the Queensland Museum. They confirmed that these mammals were difficult to identify from photographs alone but thought they were Broadnosed Bats and what we thought was a tick on the neck was actually a Batfly which is a blind, wingless species of fly looking much like a spider. Micro Bats are small warm-blooded, nocturnal mammals and may travel quite long distances and spend up to seven hours at night looking for food. Insects are their main source of food and these are caught on the wing. They are blessed with the normal six senses but Note the Batfly behind the ear.

REMEMBER AUSTRALIA? Sydney Harbour Bridge 1930

Aussie Rules, Rabbits & Sport In 1824 the Moreton Bay Penal Colony was established on the Brisbane River, but it was 35 years later in 1859 before Queensland was established as a separate Colony from NSW.

By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society

his month the world remembers the day 50 years ago when man first landed on the moon in 1969. A few special “Senior” readers may be able to remember things that happened more than 80 years ago, such as the

opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, or the fateful introduction of Cane Toads into northern Australia in 1935. Beyond that, many of the significant things that happened in Australia are simply part of “History”, forgotten long ago, if they ever were remembered after leaving the school classroom.

Historical dates are not very interesting, or easy to remember, but we need to be reminded now and again about how long ago, or indeed how recently, some key events that shaped Australia actually happened. Here are a few things that are part of all our heritage, that put the years and events in perspective.

A year before that in 1858 the first Australian Rules Football match was played in Melbourne between Scotts College and St. Kilda Grammar School. The next year in 1859 wild European Rabbits were introduced into Australia for “Sport”. They soon started breeding, as Rabbits do, and reached plague proportions before the Myxomatosis virus was introduced in 1950 to control the population. Any readers who lived on the land will clearly remember those shocking images. In 1860 the first Cameleers came from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey and played a key role in opening up the outback with their Ships of the Desert.

Plague of Rabbits

In that same year Burke, Wills, King and Gray became the first Europeans to cross Australia from South to North, and all but Gray perished on the fateful return journey. A year later in 1861, that’s 158 years ago, the first Melbourne Cup was run at Flemington racecourse. That same year Australia’s first Mosque was built in South Australia by Afghan cameleers. A few years later the first Australian Cricket team went to England to play a series of “Entertaining” matches in 1868. The team was made up entirely of Aboriginal men. It was 9 years later in 1877 before the first cricket Test Match was played between Australia and England at Melbourne Cricket ground. After 80 continuous years of Convict transportation from England to Australia, convicted felons finally stopped being shipped out here in 1868, just 151 years ago. By about 1900 the once populace indigenous inhabitants of the Moreton Bay area been almost wiped out.

Australia on world stage In today’s era of smartphones and instant communication, it is worth remembering that it was only 147 years ago in 1872 that the final leg of submarine telegraph cable was laid between Java and Darwin to link Australia with Europe, reducing communication time from months to hours.

Aboriginal Cricket Team 1868 Jackie Howe hand shearing 321 sheep in a single day, a record that remains unbeaten. In 1896 the first Australian Olympian Edwin Flack won Gold in the 800 and 1500 metres, took part in the Marathon, and also won a Bronze medal in the doubles Tennis at Athens in Greece.

Pollies, Pictures & Products The world’s first Labour Government was sworn into Queensland Parliament in 1899 with Anderson Dawson as Premier. A couple of years later the White Australia Policy was introduced to limit Non-British migration into Australia. CONTINUES OVER PAGE >>

The Royal National Park was the first to be established in Australia in 1879 and in 1885 BHP was founded and went on to become the world’s largest mining company, expanding into Steel and Coal. Banjo Patterson had his now famous poem “The man from Snowy River” published in the Bulletin magazine in 1890 at a time when Australia was developing into a distinct national identity. It was the First World War of 1914/18 that provided that lasting opportunity. In the final years of the 1890’s some Aussie legends were established with

HISTORY CONTINUED Opening the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1933 may be remembered by some, but the opening of the Bribie Island Bridge in 1963 will be remembered by many more readers, and that makes our bridge 30 years younger. This is an appropriate point to end these historical reminders!!.

More Bribie History... It might surprise some people to learn that the world’s first multi-reel feature-length film titled “The Story of the Kelly Gang” was made in Australia and first shown in Melbourne in 1906, just 113 years ago. Fifty years later in 1956, the first Television broadcast took place to transmit the Olympic Games from Melbourne to the world.

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY With Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra in the ‘Pride and the Passion’. trying to find a balance in your life. Only by finding that balance can you feel accomplished within yourself and feel fulfilled.” The all-consuming, passionate love that flows from Sophia’s lips accentuates her Italian accent more and more the quieter she speaks.

SOPHIA LOREN FIERY MOTHER HEN be found anywhere. “ No, Madam, Miss Loren is not in the V.I.P lounge yet.” “No, I’m sorry, she has not arrived in the C.I.P. lounge.” 45 minutes later the Swiss Air supervisor in a far-off upstairs office tracks her down, when she arrives late.

s Sophia Loren is whisked away from the department store to a BBC radio interview and a meeting with Terry Wogan for the evening’s show, she shakes my hand firmly with “See you at the airport tomorrow morning.” No break for her. No going out tonight. Just a quiet dinner at her hotel, the Ritz. Next morning the confusion at Heathrow Airport reigns supreme. In the hustle and bustle Sophia is not to

“She’ll see you for 15 minutes downstairs at the First Class counter.” Scampering down several flights of stairs and endless corridors at the opposite end of Terminal Two, I find her queuing at the baggage check-in counter for her flight to Geneva. Her dark brown mink coat and matching leather gloves make her look a little fuller than yesterday, her black and red stiletto heels and tinted prescription glasses adding extra allure. And just as the helpful official tries to usher us into a cabinet-sized office behind the baggage counter, a group of teenagers having recognized the star, rush up to her, asking if they might

photograph her. Sophia’s flight has been called by now, but like a clucky mother hen, both arms outstretched, encompassing the brood, she lets them snap her. Alone at last! But there can only be time for one question now, while the official assures Sophia that he won’t let her miss the flight.

What is the most important thing in Sophia’s life? With her 40 years close family relationship: iconic Italian film producer husband of 140 films, Carlo Ponti, (he will live till 2007) and sons, Carlo, 17, and Eduardo,13, whom, because of miscarriages, Sophia had late, at 34 and 38, her answer is no surprise. “Motherhood. Absolutely. More than anything. But the work is important too. Your inner peace and tranquility comes through your experiences living your life day by day and

“Motherhood has played such an important part in my life because I have always wanted children since I was a little girl. That’s why I live my life for my children. I try to be a good mother, but I don’t know what makes a good mother. It depends so much on different circumstances and the characters of your children. It’s impossible to make a hard and fast rule on it. Like all mothers from the south of Italy, I am a little overprotective. But we do it in good faith, wanting to protect our children from risks and this violent world. “I want my children to believe in honesty, sincerity and kindness. Not lies. I hate lies. And I try to nourish a strong relationship between the two brothers, like I had with my sister, Maria. That is absolutely wonderful.” Are the boys being brought up religiously?

Sophia’s alluring charisma “They are Roman Catholics, but are not surrounded by organized religion. There will come a time, when they need to have much faith in God and when they will need to go to church. But it is something that has to come from them. A mystic crisis that you have sometimes in puberty or between 12 and 18, is something that still has not happened in our family. “I hope it does happen because when you really believe in something, it means that you have faith in God, faith in yourself and faith in life. I think these moral qualities are extremely important in the world we live in today. “I try to bring the boys up with those good principles, with their feet on the ground. But it is very hard, being such a different situation: “I was hungry. They are not. My mother never had enough food for us. Meat

As World War 2 mother protecting her child in ‘Two Women’ was the greatest luxury. We had it maybe once a month. I even made my own sandals by putting ribbons on soles. They never lasted.” Sophia pauses, becomes pensive, then continues: “But I do get fulfillment from my work as well as the family, especially when it really pleases me, like something creative and work I really want to do, a step forward in my career, playing older women and mothers, rather than the love or glamour interest.” I notice a little slight grey having been tinted out as Sophia flicks back those tresses, observing me admiring her glistening auburn hair. “I’ve always dyed my hair, not just now that I’m getting older, because my hair is very, very dark. Age has never bothered me

Above: With Gregory Peck in ‘Arabesque’ Right: ‘A Countess in Hong Kong’ with Marlon Brando and always living with the children you even like to age, to watch them grow up. I was never unhappy about becoming older. Maybe I have to thank my boys for that, anticipating the future rather than longing for the past. “Oh, I have to go…….” Through an open slit in the door, the airline official is motioning for her to

leave. And happy in the realization that in a couple of hours she will rejoin the children she so loves talking about, Sophia Loren makes her hasty exit.

TELL YOUR STORY WITH AN ENCAUSTIC ART WORKSHOP THIS WEEKEND By Deb Mieth

ncaustic gypsy Mo Godbeer promises to unleash your creative potential at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre this Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July. In her two-day encaustic collage class, artists will be paper rusting, dyeing, bleaching, mono printing, image transferring, and much more. They will learn how

to combine objects, images and words with encaustic to capture a mood, tell a story, or express a feeling in order to bring their artworks to life. Encaustic medium is the perfect partner for collage. Glue that binds the parts together can also be painted, scratched, textured and have materials embedded into it. Unique objects, vintage images and handmade

papers can be added to the collages. All materials are provided. With her husband Mark, Mo travels around Australia, living in a caravan, teaching her amazing, adaptable encaustic techniques. And not even the sky is the limit with her art form having so many different combinations to explore. The workshops are open to all from complete novices to experienced artists. Everyone has a wonderful time making new friends and heading off at the end to work more encaustic magic at home.

Workshop cost is $120 for BICAS members, $130 for non-members, with $30 for materials, and start promptly at a 9.30am start until 3.30pm. The Arts Centre is at 191 Sunderland Drive Banksia Beach. MATTHEW FLINDERS ART PRIZE 2019

E

xcitement is building for the opening of this year’s Matthew Flinders Art Prize. Now in its 21st year, the Matthew Flinders Art Prize honours artists of all mediums and showcases the wonderful Bribie Island Community Arts Centre where it is housed. The Arts Centre, built in 1988 in Banksia Beach, had the splendid Matthew Flinders Gallery addedin 1999. The same year, in tribute to Bribie Island’s intrepid discoverer/ explorer, an annual art competition/exhibition began in his namesake gallery. The MFAP has been a focal point for creatives and the art-loving community on Bribie Island and surrounding region, eagerly anticipated and joined and a launch point for several successful artists over the years. Initially drawing local Bribie artists who worked, shared and honed their craft at the Arts Centre, it has grown and spread its range to artists from all over south-east Queensland and

beyond. This expansion has been helped significantly by generous local sponsors and supporters. This year, the sponsors are; Hans Electrical, Bribie RSL, Waterways Motel, Gem Life, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Traditional Funerals, Ireland Flooring, Victory Press, Mitre 10 Bribie, italkTravel & Cruise, Simone Wilson MP for Pumicestone. In keeping with the event’s growth and enhanced status within the arts community, it has done away with categories and is

now an open competition. In recent years, major prize winners have been a painter – and also a sculptor and photographers.

Bribie Island Community Arts Society members and friends look forward to the 2019 event with excitement to the opening on July 19.

Prize money totals $8500. First prize is $5000, second prize $2000 and there are two $500 Highly Commended awards. There is also a $500 People’s Choice prize.

The MFAP runs July 20 until August 9 at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre 191 Sunderland Drive Banksia Beach. Hours Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 4pm.

This year’s entries which will be judged and hung on July 15 -18 promise an outstanding exhibition, says organising committee chairman, Stephanie White.

DID YOU TELL THE PELICANS? I think you might have noticed That the pelicans have gone. You have wired their lampposts, And we think that that was wrong. The ground’s not safe for pelicans, There are humans everywhere To roost upon the shore or beach No pelican would dare.

MAD Poets

So they roosted on the lamp-posts On the bridge where they could see The food in the blue water Not seen by you or me. Well you changed all the lampposts The locals were not pleased You knew they weren’t happy in fact they felt deceived. The locals made a protest Lined the bridge from end to end But no results so far, Just what do you intend? So the pelicans have nowhere, And seem to have no say Did you tell the pelicans That they have had their day? Did you tell the pelicans That their goose was cooked Did you tell the pelicans

That their roost was hooked? Did you tell the pelicans That they had to go away? Did you tell the pelicans They could no longer stay. Did you tell the pelicans You were considering their plight Did you tell the pelicans Where they could settle from their flight? You said that you would consider this And make some studies too And while you’re making promises What do the pelicans do? We are waiting patiently What will our votes produce? Quite some time has passed now So what is your excuse? Peter Gibson

LAUGH RIOT Doctor: “I’m sorry but you suffer from a terminal illness and have only 10 to live.” Patient: “What do you mean, 10? 10 what? Months? Weeks?!” Doctor: “Nine.” Farting in a lift is wrong on so many levels! I hate Russian dolls, they’re so full of themselves.

howers were predicted and the weather was quite chilly. Even so, 15 intrepid persons met at the Mt Mee Dahmongah Park lookout where many photos were taken of the beautiful farmlands and mountains surrounding the area. Two of our keen bird photographers, Greg and Sue were on site at 6 am to photograph the early

‘Lookout Pano Photo’ by Rodney Augusten birds. A coffee outlet was operating at the lookout and some members had a hot coffee before moving onto the picnic area in the national park about 6 km further on. There were many motorcyclists out on the road making use of the mountainous terrain. Some of our photographers took interesting action shots of the riders as they zoomed past. Luckily the weather remained fine and many interesting photos were taken during the morning.

‘Through a Crystal Ball’ by Alain Chardon Most members brought their morning tea which they enjoyed at the Gantry Picnic area in the fresh mountain air while viewing the lovely rainforest scenery. Most remained in the vicinity taking more photos and socialising. At lunchtime some went out looking for more photo opportunities, some remained in the park area and had a picnic under the trees while others met at the Woodford Hotel for lunch. There is no location shoot as such for July as we are organizing a Master Portrait Workshop which is now fully booked. This will be

MOVIE REVIEW YESTERDAY

By Chris Connolly

B

izarre or imaginative; far-fetched or creative… You will be on one side or the other as a viewer of Yesterday by filmmaker, Daniel Boyle. Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel is a struggling British musician hoping for fame and fortune in the industry. Close to abandoning his dream, the unexpected happens. For mere seconds through a global blackout, the world loses power and everyone we meet, excluding Jack who was accidentally spared, is completely unaware that the Beatles and their music ever existed. Seizing this opportunity, Jack introduces the Beatles music as his own and is proclaimed an industry genius. The story then changes gears as we follow Jack’s journey from this point forward. Patel, with an earnest and light-hearted touch, portrays not only Jack’s torment and guilt over his dishonesty but also the emotional costs attached to his newly found fame.

Patel is well supported by both Jack’s love interest and unwavering supporter Ellie, played by Lily James and by Jack’s industry facilitator, Ed Sheeran, playing himself in a film that remarkably parallels Sheeran’s own story of discovery. See the story unfold in the dilemmas tackled dotted with the delights of hearing selections from the Beatles own musical gold mine. The film’s pace is slow. The genre is mixed. The British accent is challenging but the music, played and sang by Patel tell himself, will be worth your while.

OPERATION COLD SNAP Between June 29, and July 19, the QPS will coordinate a state-wide traffic policing operation designed to improve road safety and reduce the number of fatal or serious injury traffic crashes. This operation coincides with the June/July school holidays and a period in which there is an increase in vehicles using Queensland roads. The operation will include strategies such as a highly visible police presence If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day. You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and

on Queensland roads and roadside drug and alcohol testing for police to detect offences and enforce the road rules. Assistant Commissioner Keating said Operation Cold Snap would reinforce the fatal five factors: • Speeding; • Drink/drug driving; • Seat belts; • Fatigue; and • Distraction. “Drivers who fail to comply with traffic laws and regulations place road users across Queensland at a high risk of being involved in a serious or fatal traffic crash,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said. “Research supports the fact that the fatal five are contributing factors in reducing the amount of fatal and injury traffic crashes. “Between June 29 and July 19, anyone travelling on the state’s highways can expect to encounter police.” community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersqld.com.au 24hrs per day. This was a field exercise involving the deployment of personnel and resources to establish and operate an evacuation network between coastal settlements and Bribie Island VMR, namely the area of Toorbul, Donnybrook, Meldale and Bellara, incorporating the Pumicestone Passage. The exercise involved key lead and support agencies as well as role players acting as evacuees from within the local community.

FISHING REPORT

FISHING By Rick Williams The rain has certainly played a big hand in our fishing over the past two weeks, but we have still managed to see some big catches along our Surfside and in the passage. But with the school holidays here the fishing looks good no matter where you decide to take the kids as there are lots about. Well, we always are waiting for this time of the year when the Chopper Tailor start to run and yes, they have finally put their heads up on the surfside at 1st, 3rd, and 4th Lagoon biting well on Pilchards. REGULAR FEATURE We have been seeing a few Yellow Fin Tuna being caught along the Surfside as well as the Bird Cage so grab yourself some pilchards and will be sure to catch a feed. The Whiting and Dart are also out in droves on the surfside at 2nd, 3rd and 4th Lagoons, campsites, ocean beach and 8th Avenue Car Park. Best bait is preserved beach worms for the Whiting and Pippies for the Dart. There has been a lot of Flathead caught about the Surfside, try using some mullet fillets for bait.

Bream caught the mouth to Ningi Creek by Neville

With Holiday season on us, why not head over to our Surfside and try your luck at fishing. We are still seeing plenty of good size catches about the passage. One of my avid anglers caught two good size bream in Ningi Creek. He was using mullet fillets for bait as well as catching a couple of mud crabs on his fishing line.

BEACH REPORT

By Michael & Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours

W

elcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick of Gateway Discovery Tours. It’s school holidays so watch for kids playing and if you see our Park Rangers go up and say “Hi”, they are great people, they don’t bite, they may know special things for you to see, right there where you are. The recent rain continued with approximately 100mm falling on parts of the Island. This rainfall has resulted in the inland track turning to mud in places, so be cautious. The island’s sand characteristic of one minute being dry, powdery sand and the next mud, both require different driving techniques. The trackside going into Poverty Creek has a lot of

water lying. The puddles are deep so unfortunately keep an eye for petrol heads that like to speed through puddles covering their vehicles in mud in a troglodyte manifestation in our modern day youth. Please note that the Rangers would love a rego number or photograph. The water table is high and water is running along the left side of the Northern Access Track just south of Mt Bribie, heading north, please avoid it. As for the rest of the inland track, it is muddy but drivable, but again remember when the tracks get deep, start a new track before the water comes up. Last week we recovered a 4x4 bogged 90 metres into the Freshwater Creek

When driving on the beach the natural winter sand erosion is in full swing, causing drop-offs. Some drop-offs can be up to an 800mm drop and if you hit them at speed you may roll over or damage your front end. Be aware

keep an eye out day and night. The track from the beach to 8 Avenue car park is chopped up and will get worse over the holidays so take care. A WW2 communication cable has surfaced on the beach adjacent to the mine control huts, have a look but don’t tamper with it. We are hoping to lay to rest all arguments, about the underground hospital very soon.

SPORT

WOMEN VS NOOSA T

Match Report - Senior By Brad Litchfield

he Bribie Tigress’s made their way up to a soggy Noosa on Friday night. The rest of the Sunshine Coast games had been cancelled (except Bribie) and with just 10 players we took on the challenge of Noosa on the back of a twomatch losing streak. The pitch was wet and muddy underfoot, but the Bribie players stood tall, knocked the ball around and played the game on the break. The ladies defence was superb in the first half

and we caught the Noosa team napping out wide and Jear Cochrane coolly slotted the only goal of the game late in the first half. The second half was a tough challenge for the Bribie ladies, but they dug in deep and with determination held their line and kept the opposition out. Each side had their chances to score but the Bribie ladies held on to secure a much-needed win. Our player of the match goes to centre back Jean Dee for an exceptional defensive effort. The Tigress’s next game is against the third-placed Woombye Taipans, at Bribie on Friday the 12th July, 6:45 pm kick off. Come on down

for an entertaining night of football!

YOUR to stop this long process and free up hospital beds and ambulances that taxi from one hospital to another. Y. Crowley Sandstone Point.

RANTS & RAVES

Dear Editor,

Recently admitted to Emergency at the Caboolture Hospital with a heart condition. I was advised that I would need to be transferred to Royal Brisbane Hospital or Prince Charles for an Angiogram as there is no Cath Lab at Caboolture. I had to wait seven days in the Cardio

Ward at Caboolture until a bed became available at R.B.H. This long wait shows a huge discrepancy in the system. The Minister has promised to update Caboolture boasting a double storey carpark (free parking for nurses would be appreciated), but surely a Cath Lab must be a priority

From Bribie Islander’s Facebook about the Pelican Roost story Dave Cox: Yes great news but why only 5? Can only imagine a token effort to appease locals. Still a great photo op for the minister. Sorry to sound negative but there are more than 5 lights.

SAY Aileen Rinaldo: Aileen Rinaldo Probably looking at cost. Not the best result but 5 is better than none. Amanda Lincoln: Should’ve been done in the first place. And on every light. I bet it’ll take months to make happen to. Karen Wilson: Great News!! well done to the action group and community member interested enough to be part of finding the right solution / a win win

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY? WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR AND VOICE YOUR LOCAL OPINION! thebribieislander@gmail.com PO Box 1160, Bongaree Q 4507

ary Tsalacopoulos has been a local for 8 years and took this photo whilst out fishing in her tinnie with her friend Jacqueline Standfield. Her friends call her “Mermaid Mary” as she loves to fish, swim and enjoy the beach life and loves living on the island. She has volunteered for 10 years to Brisbane and Bribie Island SES (State Emergency Service) and received a national medal and meritorious medal for her service. Mary currently works as a cleaner at Banksia primary and Bribie high. Mary’s way of living on Bribie is that she is “on a working holiday”
