TECHNOLOGY

SEEING IS BELIEVING! HARVEY NORMAN ROTHWELL HAS THE AMAZING SAMSUNG 8K TV... AND YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT.

A

ccording to John Manning, Electrical Proprietor of Harvey Norman Rothwell, Harvey Norman as a brand, is always the first choice retailer by all suppliers when releasing new technology products into the Australian market. “What this means for Bribie Islanders is that they get the opportunity to visit our Harvey Norman Rothwell store and experience something that may not be available anywhere else in the local market,” said John. And John Manning is very excited right now to tell the people of Bribie about the cutting edge in Television technology with the launch of the Samsung QLED 900 SERIES 8K TV.

John says even if you haven’t heard of 8K TV, seeing the Samsung QLED 900 SERIES 8K TV in real life will absolutely change the way you think about television. “I welcome the people of Bribie to pop on down to my store at Rothwell and check out this incredible television. We have it in-store now for your perusal. Most importantly we have our friendly team who are able to give you the knowledge you need to make an informed decision and of course at a reasonable price and with our exceptional service,” said John. He said that Samsung is “First to Market” in Australia with this new

Technology of 8K Television and are partnering with Harvey Norman to launch it onto the Australian market. “Because Harvey Norman is a tremendous business partner with Samsung they have chosen Harvey Norman to be a ‘Launch Partner’. With this in mind, I would like the opportunity to make readers aware of some of the features and benefits that this new product can bring to your viewing experience,” he said. “Firstly, the Samsung QLED 900 SERIES 8K TV is an LED TV with Quantum Dot Technology which will enhance the colour and contrast available. This, in turn, makes the TV great for any environment whether

it be a well-lit room or dark media room. It has a massive 33million pixels which are all but invisible to the naked eye.” He says Samsung claim 8K TVs can use advanced processing to upscale HD and 4K images to 8K, inventing detail and removing noise to make vision look clearer and sharper on the big screen. “For anyone that views a lot of free to air television, Netflix, Foxtel, Stan or any of the other streaming services, or spends any time gaming then this will be a real game-changer in your viewing experience. We would like to invite you to come and see this amazing technology instore,” he says.

THE CHANGING FACE OF TELEVISION F

or many readers, we are the generation that grew up with television as the primary entertainment and social medium for the era. Mum, Dad and the kids gathering around a fuzzy black and white cathode ray tube TV set and watching first-run British or American TV shows along with a smattering of Australian homegrown content. While our southern cousins in Sydney and Melbourne enjoyed the launch of television in 1956 it wasn’t until August 1959 that Brisbane enjoyed this groundbreaking technology. Back then television, for those who could afford it, was truly a family entertainment medium. TV programming schedules meant that favourite programs needed to be watched when they were broadcast. No luxury of being able to record programs or take advantage of time-shifting technology. Those families that couldn’t afford this luxury consumer item quite often managed

to visit a friend or relative who owned this marvellous new medium at the most convenient time when their favourite program just happened to be being broadcast. Television literally brought families and friends together. Fast forward to 2019 and marvel at the technology that allows us to not only to watch what we want where and when we want to but also to create content that can be uploaded and shared on global video streaming platforms. While the change in broadcasting and how we consume that programming has radically changed the desire to see the absolute best picture and sound quality has not. This is why Harvey Norman Rothwell has sponsored the cover for this Issue #93 as part of their launch of the next generation SAMSUNG QLED 8 K television. If you enjoy your television viewing then do yourself a favour and check out this amazing technology for yourself.

WHY NOT JOIN US... WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE?

T

he Healthy Slimmers Fellowship Support Group was founded by Gwen Clayton in 1972 with clubs meeting around the Brisbane district. Bribie Island had two clubs which were established in 1982. The two clubs merged in 2014 and now have a membership of 77 members who meet weekly. The Bribie Island Healthy Slimmers Fellowship celebrate their successful efforts annually at a graduation lunch where weight loss efforts throughout the year are awarded and encouraged. This year the event was held at the Bribie Island

Golf Club in Woorim on Saturday 20th July. The graduation event is held as a way of recognising the efforts of all who had lost weight and also for those who had reached their goal weight to graduate. The overall net weight loss within the club this year was a staggering 207.1kgs. The aim is not just to lose weight, but to achieve a goal weight which is set by the member’s doctor, not the club. Once the member’s goal weight has been reached there is ongoing commitment toward maintaining that goal by remaining within a range of 2kgs above and 4 kgs below.

BRIBIE BOWLS BOTTLE CAP CAMPAIGN B ottle caps are fully recyclable. Unfortunately, as reported on ABC’s ‘War on Waste’, they aren’t being recycled. They get sent to landfill, they fall through machinery, and in worst case scenarios, if attached to a bottle, they can explode and force expensive re packing issues.

This overlooked waste product is almost entirely made from HDPE 2 (High Density Polyethylene). After considerable experimentation Envision Hands have successfully taken this plastic and extruded it to create functioning filament for 3D printers. Once they have the filament, they 3D print all the components that make up prosthetic hands and support people in need of these aids. The Bribie Island Bowls Club consider this to be such an innovative mission

and has recently signed up to become a collection point for Vision Hands. “We are in the perfect position to help” said Kerry Muller, Treasurer, “If we can save the environment and aid in helping this amazing charity, then it’s an easy solution to become a collection point.” The Bribie Island Bowls Club are asking all the locals to get behind the campaign. Simply keep all your bottle caps such as water bottle, milk bottle, soft drink bottle lids and caps and drop them into the collection container set up in Reception area of the Club. The Bribie Bowls Club will then ensure they are sent to Envision Hands located in Victoria. waterfront, has shown the writer both the beauty and the beast of burglary by uncaring individuals who often cause havoc in the lives of the innocents. Whether on water or not we all need to be watchful both day and night, but particularly in the dark hours when our homes are more vulnerable. The police have always done their best to round up these offenders, and having “Neighbourhood Watch” in our area is a bonus. It is up to the residents either singularly or in community groups to help us. Bribie and its nearby areas like Beachmere, Toorbul and Donnybrook and the homes in Ningi and beyond need to look seriously at their security making sure that their homes are securely locked is a good start. Lighting is the best security available. Almost all waterfront properties have lighting available on their pontoons or waterfront gardens but very few take advantage of the effects that lights have on would-be intruders and the beauty that the lights

create. Locals have told me that electricity is too expensive or lights are just not necessary until they suffer the trauma of a break-in or even an assault. Many have lost their cars and household valuables and some have been hospitalised. Many homes have auto day/night switches fitted on their pontoon lights and others have beautiful rock garden and wall lights. The present low voltage high output and cost-efficient globes have a long life. These globes help keep electricity prices down and security up. Solar security lights are also very affective. Irrespective of where we live thieves could be watching – double check your locks and turn on your lights. The writer has seen evidence of the trauma foisted on innocent residents by break-ins and everyone should be watchful. Many locals are retired and enjoying the quieter life whilst others have young families…. our area has a wonderful smorgasbord of newly arrived and longstanding residents who need protection. Pontoons and front gardens often hold a multitude of toys – tinnies, kayaks, canoes and jet skis, bikes and toys are left lying outside to be easily scooped up on the road front by quick-thinking opportunists. We are so fortunate to live in such beautiful areas so we need to do our best to be safe, happy and secure. Let us help ourselves and aid the police with their overstretched workload.

A good slogan could be, “lights on and lock up for security.”

LATEST CONTACT LENSES NOW AVAILABLE FOR SENSITIVE EYES

wner of Eye Envy Optometrist, Justin Gribbin says his Morayfield shopping centre store is one of the first optometrists to stock the latest range of ACUVUE Oasys with Transitions, the contact lens that seamlessly adapts to light. Justin says that anyone who is glare sensitive may benefit from the newly launched product and is welcome to make an appointment to discuss the benefits of this new contact lens product range.

Justin said that customers who have tried the ACUVUE Oasis with Transitions contact lenses have reported extremely positive results. “People are telling me that they are surprised at how seamlessly the lenses change when moving from outdoor daylight to an indoor artificial lit environment. They are also reporting that they have stopped

squinting in bright sunlight and also find their night vision driving better with less glare from oncoming cars’ headlights,” he said. So if you are bothered by light why not book now to try ACUVUE Oasys with Transitions by calling the friendly Eye Envy team on 5432 3077.

At Eye Envy, we are independent + local. We spend the extra time to genuinely listen and give you the best possible service.

“Transitions’ lenses are embedded with photochromic molecules that react and change their molecular structure when exposed to ultraviolet light. As a result of the structural change, they’re able to absorb more light as it tries to pass through, shielding the wearer’s eyes and darkening the lenses,” said Justin.

The two-week disposable contacts work similarly to how Transitions glasses do, slowly darkening when you step outside and are exposed to ultraviolet light. Because most windows filter out UV light, when you come back indoors the lenses will slowly lighten again. Although the technology has been around since 1962, Transitions glasses still seem like space-age technology given they don’t rely on electronics or batteries to work.

As many might know, the Rotary Club of Bribie Island is part of District 9600 which has 66 individual Clubs, including 12 in Papua New Guinea, two in the Solomon Islands and one in Nauru. Each of the 529 Districts has a District Governor (DG) who, during their term of service, strengthens existing

18

Rotary clubs, organises new clubs, and promotes membership growth. This position is vital to the success of Rotary and the people selected to fill the position of DG have proven decision making and strong leadership skills. According to (former US President) Dwight D. Eisenhower ‘The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.’ He also said, ‘Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you

Before his visit, Darryl told me his goal is to ‘ensure that we promote the great work of Rotary to a wider audience. From this, we enhance our membership with a wider representation of our Communities in our Clubs and we establish more new Clubs with new ways of interaction. We need to enhance the opportunities for members of the public to be formal ‘Friends of Rotary’ if membership is not an option though we

need to look at change to ensure that these people become Rotarians of our future Rotary. Family, work and lifestyle balances with Rotary must be enhanced and we must change how we operate to bring Family back to Rotary. Projects on a local and International basis must be maintained and grow. An example of this is the doubling of our tree planting cooperation with our local councils this year. Finally, we need to celebrate our 75-year partnership with the United Nations (UN) and Our Internationality. To do this there will be a major celebration in Brisbane on 13-15 March 2020. Overall I want Rotarians and their families to have fun.’ Listening to Darryl talk reminded me of another Governor/President’s words - Ronald Reagan who said, ‘The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.’ During his talk, Darryl took the opportunity to present a special Paul Harris 5 Sapphire pin to Barry Clark for his ongoing commitment and service to Rotary.

Darryl presenting Barry Clark with a special Sapphire recognition for his commitment to Rotary.

In recognition of Darryl’s desire to celebrate the 75year partnership with the UN, we arranged to have local Bribie identity Dakoda Titmus to be our guest speaker. Dakoda is the President of United Nations (UN) Youth Queensland, a Not for Profit Organisation that engages with over 1,500 young Queenslanders every year and educates them on International Relations focused topics which are hidden from mainstream schooling. Dakoda, who was our Team Leader for Model United National Assembly (MUNA) in 2016 and 2017, gave an informative presentation about his volunteer work in UN Youth and the importance of MUNA. Readers will remember, Bribie Rotary has been sending young Briberians from Bribie High School to Canberra for several years

to attend the National MUNA competition. This not only furthers their education, but it also allows them to see their national capital and come home with knowledge to pass on to friends and fellow students. In his presentation, Dakoda talked about the debating competitions held by UN Youth, of his two trips to Europe and the USA, which examined democracy in several countries, and his two trips to Canberra where he visited the Egyptian and Jordanian Embassies. Two of our newer Rotarians commented to me on how wonderful the evening was, and how excellent both speakers were. I wish Darryl a very successful year as District Governor but know he will be successful due to

Lexie Waddell-Bajor and Dakoda Titmus at MUNA his strong belief in Rotary, and because of his desire to encourage his Club Presidents to be innovative, inclusive and give credit where credit is due.

To Darryl and all of my readers, I offer the Roman poet Horace’s homage, something we might all do - “Carpe Diem” (Seize the Day).

WINELANDER

T

he merry go round of the judging of wines around Australia has begun with the Royal Queensland Wine Show and it was a $15 Shiraz from Deep Woods Estate near Yallingup in Western Australia that took out the trophy and gold medal for Best Shiraz/Cabernet blend with its 2017 ‘Ebony’ Cabernet Shiraz. The wine scored 95 points out of a possible 100 and also won a gold medal with The Deep Woods Estate 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot which also scored 95 points which retails for around $35 per bottle. 20

Deep Woods Estate is a part of The Fogarty Wine Group, a Western Australian family-controlled wine group which also owns Evans and Tate in Margaret River and The Millbrook Winery in the Perth Hills, which if you are visiting Perth is well worth the 40 minute drive, it is a fabulous winery and restaurant overlooking a lake. Evans and Tate took out the gold medal for the Redbrook Reserve Chardonnay along with the Evans and Tate 2016 and 2017 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Millbrook Wines won gold medals for the 2018 Single Vineyard Chardonnay which will be released in September. The show wasn’t without controversy this year

though as no Queensland wine was awarded many gold medals with winemaker and show medal sponsor Angelo Puglisi blaming the prohibiting costs of entry fees for wines to the show being the major reason. The entry fees range from $110 to $130 for each wine entered plus 6 bottles of each wine as well which is ridiculous as with the advent of Stelvin caps having made most wines pretty well taint free there is no need for more than two bottles of each, which used to be the norm, obviously the extra bottles are going somewhere else! If you have for example 6 wines to submit the cost would be at least $660 plus three dozen samples

By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au which for a small producer will come at too high a cost, it is about time the RNA took a good look at themselves if they want the wine industry to develop in Queensland. Ironically the wine that was judged to be the grand champion trophy this year was the Giant Steps Nocton Vineyard 2018 Pinot Noir from Victoria’s Yarra Valley from fruit sourced from Tasmania which was made by winemaker Steve Flamstead a Queenslander! Other trophy winners were Pewsey Vale ‘The Contours’ Riesling, McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon 2013, Miles from Nowhere 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, Capel Vale Black Label 2018 Chardonnay,

Jacobs Creek 2019 Classic Pinot Grigio, Nepenthe Winemakers Select 2018 Gewurztraminer, Brown Bros Patricia 2015 Noble Riesling. The Jacobs Creek Classic Reserve Classic Reserve Pinot Grigio currently sells at Dan Murphy’s for $8.50 a bottle in a six-pack. The Italians are once again trying to get the term ‘Prosecco’ off the labels of Australian wines comparing its use to that of Champagne. Prosecco is currently enjoying a massive boom probably at the expense of Champagne and other sparkling wine styles with the Australian grape crush surging 42% this year with the Prosecco grape crush volume increasing by an average of 50% each year since 2015. Producers predict a catastrophic effect on the industry if the name is removed and which may have contributed to the decline of Australian fortified wines when terms such as ‘Port’ and ‘Sherry’ were removed as we discussed in the last issue of ‘The Bribie Islander’. The Italian undersecretary of state for economic development Michele Geraci expects Australia to give up the name as part of the latest round of EU trade negotiations and expected he was prepared to look at a ‘sunset clause’ for anxious winemakers which would probably be for around 4 years to allow for Australian winemakers to adapt or adjust but this could jeopardise a market that could be worth $200 million within four years. The European Commission tried to register Prosecco as a geographic indicator or GI in Australia in 2013 meaning it was confined to a region in Italy in the same way as Champagne

and they changed the grape name from Prosecco to Glera in 2009 but the bid failed as Australia argued it was a generic variety like Chardonnay, however I don’t think we have heard the end of the argument and with the strength of the EU behind them I feel it is only a matter of time before the Italians get their way. As a matter of interest Feta cheese and several other food products are also being targeted in the same way. This week I opened a 2012 Wynn’s Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and as usual, the wine lived up to expectations. The wine which has aromas of blackcurrants was supported by a smooth full-bodied palate and was an absolute delight. Also, two wines from Angove, the first a Long Row 2018 Pinot Grigio which was a pleasant dry white with citrus aromas and flavours of apples and the other being a full-bodied red from McLaren Vale a 2018 Family Crest Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre which had aromas of spice and berries, two very good wines.

Cheers, Philip Arlidge

THE DUNNY DOOR By Elaine Lutton

G

enerally speaking, I am not one for collecting material washed up on the beach. I left that to my husband who could not wander along the strand without bringing home a selection of hooks, lines and sinkers, along with a variety of other objects that “might come in useful.”

However, when I saw a whole timber door washed up on the beach in front of us, I knew that all those lifestyle programmes that I had watched over the years, were about to pay off.

Not so. I think he realised that this represented work for him. Still, he had to admit that I had supplied the inspiration and all that was required of him was a little perspiration.

With great excitement, and much huffing and puffing, I dragged my booty home, expecting the husband to be equally delighted.

The top and bottom of the door were sawn off, which removed most of the dry rot. A little sanding and some puttying were followed by a generous splash of

The table was set up at the bottom of the yard, overlooking the ocean. Our garden bench, also painted in fashionable mission brown, provided seating. It is to this little bit of Heaven that we would retreat in the late afternoon. A bottle of Merlot and two glasses, and all was right in our world. Here we could catch up on each other’s day and relax before dinner. From our vantage point over the Bay, we frequently saw dolphins chasing baitfish. It is hard to say which was the more beautiful, the graceful movements of the dolphins or the silver ripple of the baitfish in their anxiety

LOCALS ONLY By Alby Lincoln

t sometimes overwhelms me just how very involved and generous that the Locals music and music lovers community can be and it was no different last Locals Only Show. Project Pink was the designated charity this time and, with the help of Joanne and Tara, Blueys staff members,as well as a couple of volunteers, managed to raise a tidy sum for the breast cancer awareness charity. Well done, volunteers and audience alike. It was another beautiful day in the beer garden for the Show. Hosted by yours truly, featured some very amazing musicians and artists. It was very pleasing to see a long set from both Mark Edwards and Neal Downes, who normally only get to perform short sets due to time restrictions. Both artists are very good and very pleasurable to watch. Mark will be appearing at Blueys on Friday night 30th August. Neal Downes is a very versatile Kiwi singer and guitarist who has been a regular over the past year. His Elvis

REGULAR FEATURE Presley and Roy Orbison style of vocals has made him a crowd favourite. Another great artist, Jenine Williams has released her CD and is appearing at a music festival, named after the title track of her recording. She is so very talented and experienced and it showed in the set that she performed..More details on the music festival next month. In the last four months or so,an act has appeared who have totally demonstrated what the music side of Locals Only is about. The show began about 12 years ago to give talented young people a vehicle where they could perform to show off their music and to gain experience, but mainly to better their musical talents. Last Sunday,we saw all that in Gonzo Zonk,a 3piece band featuring Frank Sover, Amanda (Molly) Jones and the incredible Jarrod,an 18 year old drummer, playing in his first band. With a set list including a fabulous version of the Zoot’s cover of Eleanor Rigby, the Link’s Sunny Afternoon and The Stones’ Paint It Black,we all got to see where rehearsal and commitment can bring something special to our stage. What an amazing performance.I can’t wait to see what’s next for these folks.

Consisting of Peter Orr on lead guitar, Gentleman John Girgenti on drums and Lonesome Dave Moore on bass, they are the most versatile and talented musicians, who, apart from Locals, don’t play in a band together. Sometimes they’ve never heard the song that the performers know but you can’t tell, once they get going. Cheers to you guys, you’re the best. It’s been very cold on the Friday night gigs but it hasn’t stopped the Locals crowd from coming to see the fine music on offer but thankfully, the cold nights will soon end. As always, Thanks again for your loyalty, commitment and passion for live local entertainment. Next Locals Only Show is on August 25th from 1pm-5pm. 25th August.1pm-5pm The Locals Only Show. Carolyn’s Tax Tips with Carolyn Wheeler CM Wheeler & Associates

Low-income tax offset/low and middle-income tax offset The new offset has come into play for the 2019 tax year joining the low-income tax offset. No data is required to claim these offsets, they are automatically calculated via your tax assessment. Tax offsets reduce the amount of tax payable on taxable income but are not refundable. Nor do they reduce the Medicare Levy. The full low-income tax offset is applied to earnings below $37000 and phases out when your income reaches $66,667. The low and middle-income tax offset applies differently to various levels of income. Income less than $37,000 will be entitled to $255. Greater than $37000 and less than $48000 you could receive up to $1080 offset. Income between $48000 and $90,000 receives the full offset of $1080. Income between $90000 and $126,000 will receive a reduction of the offset based on the income. Greater than $126,000 you miss out entirely. Asset write off Please ensure that any assets that are to be claimed for immediate write off for the 18/19 year have a purchase date available. Since the rules changed from $20,000 to $25,000 to $30,000 throughout the financial year, the date and time are very important. Bribie Office Opens Carolyn, the Principal of CM Wheeler & Associates has had an affinity with Bribie Island for over 20 years from the first time she brought her young children over to the beach. Joint Health, Arborvitae

O

ne of the best sellers from Bribie Simply Healthy is a product called Arborvitae of which I have received a lot of positive feedback from customers. Arborvitae seems to do wonders for arthritis/ osteoarthritis, joint pain, soreness and stiffness. It supports joint mobility, flexibility and helps enhance healthy joint function. The main ingredient of Arborvitae is Pychogenol, which is Pine Bark Extract. Arborvitae comes from French Maritime Pine trees in South-West of France, where the forest is unspoiled and natural with no pesticides or herbicides. It’s a powerful antioxidant It acts as a natural antiinflammatory, which helps generate collagen and helps to dilate and purify blood vessels. The researchers found that Pycnogenol is good for cardiovascular health; oral and topical skincare, joint health and eye health among many other benefits. If you want to find more information please visit www.arborvitae.com.au Arborvitae testimonial video is available on Bribie Simply Healthy Facebook. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Therapy. A woman came for EFT therapy a few weeks ago. She was hoping to release the emotional scars she had received from a recent relationship. Even though

she is no longer involved with her ex-boyfriend, she found that she was still suffering from the trauma of that relationship. She is in her early 60s and had been married twice prior. The last marriage lasted 33 years until her husband passed. She seemed to have had a wonderful marriage. She was then in this recent relationship for three years which has just ended. She said he had brought so much grief into her life to the extent that she no longer wished to do anything, nor go anywhere. She even had a lifelong dream trip planned to go overseas, but the only thing she really wanted to do was, to curl up in her bed because she had lost all interest in life. He was very possessive, manipulative, controlling and emotionally abusive to her. He also was suffering from Bipolar and had tried to commit suicide three times and had one affair during their relationship. Unfortunately, we often repeat our past and continue to go around in a cycle. What I do as an EFT Therapist is to help clear up and expose people’s trauma by identifying “Trapped Emotions”. Often trapped Emotions are created by traumatic childhood experiences embedded in our subconscious mind and eventually manifest into many emotional and physical symptoms. Some common emotional symptoms can include fear, depression, anxiety,

Her major trauma was that she was taken by a man who claimed to be her biological father. He took her from her lovely foster home at the age of 6 and raised her until she was 16. This man was using her as a pawn to get back with the girl’s mother. Strangely her fake father’s characteristics were very similar to her ex-boyfriend even the spelling of their names were similar. When traumas are so deep we tend to block them out or bury them within ourselves. The problem is these stay in our subconscious mind and cause many problems later in life. When she faced with her hatred, resentment, fear, hurt and

betrayal issues caused by her fake father and released the trapped emotions she finally had her smile back and she was able to move forward. She now was able to travel as she had planned. She was extremely happy with the results of therapy.

BROTHER BEARS – SUPPORTING SIBLINGS AFTER LOSS

COMMUNITY the stillbirth of their son Shay in 2016, local couple Katie and Michael Dowling created the not for profit organisation Brother Bears after realising there were no support services for their older son. Brother Bears provides bereaved siblings with packages designed to help the child understand what has happened and provide parents and caregivers with resources to guide them. The packages contain specially written children’s books, a bear to cuddle and items such as handmade keepsake blankets, journals, photo frames & flower seeds. With the support of the community, Brother Bears has also donated Cuddle Cots and memory boxes to Beaudesert Hospital & Calvary Hospital in Canberra.

LOSS AND GRIEF PEER SUPPORT GROUPS By Lorice Keith

M

any who have attended a “Seasons” Loss and Grief Support Group have attested to this feeling …… of being angry, disheartened and discouraged by lack of understanding of the grief experience from those around them. “Seasons” Group participants have also discovered the truth in the following quote – “The healing power of even the most microscopic exchange with someone who knows in a flash precisely what you’re talking about because they’ve experienced that thing too cannot be overestimated.” (Cheryl Strayed) “Grief has to be worked through. It is like walking through water. Sometimes there are little waves lapping about my feet. Sometimes there is an enormous breaker that knocks me down. Sometimes there is a sudden and fierce squall. But I know that many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. We are not good

about admitting grief, it is embarrassing. We turn away, afraid that it might happen to us. But it is part of life, and it has to be gone through.” The “Seasons” Loss and Grief Peer Support Groups assist people in this process of coping with grief. They are sponsored by St Peter’s Anglican Church and have been conducted on Bribie Island for over 15 years. The Companions (those who conduct the group) have been trained in the program which was originally put together by Centacare. Although the program is sponsored by the Anglican Church, it is non-denominational and is open to all, and is not centred on religious faith. Three groups are usually conducted each year. Groups have been conducted this year in February/March and May/ June. The third group for 2019 is now open for registration. It will be conducted during August/September.

NATURE Little Bronze-Cuckoo PNG. In Australia they are found in east and southern parts and in the south of Western Australia. They are also found in NZ and some Pacific Islands. Insects and caterpillars are their main food which they take from leaves and from the ground. They sit on a perch waiting for their prey to appear. Hairy caterpillars are on the menu and the sharp spines are caught up in the soft lining of their stomachs. These eventually are spat out.

BRONZE CUCKOOS By Marj Webber

B

ronze-Cuckoos are the smallest of the Cuckoo species in Australia. They have iridescent bronze green plumage and are barred on their underparts. Their calls are similar. All are parasitic and lay their eggs in other bird’s nests and expect the host birds to raise their chicks. There are four species of BronzeCuckoos in Australia. Shining, Little, and Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoos have all been recorded on Bribie Island with the Little and Horsfield’s being very rare visitors. Shining Bronze-Cuckoos (Chrysococcyx lucidus) are the species most likely to be seen on Bribie Island as they are fairly common in the woodlands and eucalyptus forests. 34

They are small birds, just 17-18 cm in length with iridescent green plumage on their backs and heads and with black almost complete bars across their throat, chest and tail. Their call from a perch is a high-pitched whistle which sounds a little like someone whistling a dog. Usually they are reasonably quiet birds but become quite vocal during the breeding season. They are not easy to spot as they are small and are mostly in the mid to upper branches of the trees in rainforests, eucalyptus forests and woodlands. Some are migratory while others prefer to stay in the same area. From our area some of the Shining Bronze-Cuckoos migrate to

August to January is usually the breeding time in our area. Being parasitic the females usually select domed host nests belonging to Thornbills, Gerygones, Scrubwrens and some other small species. One egg is laid in each nest and up to 16 greenish brown eggs may be laid in one season. Even though Cuckoo eggs are slightly different the host birds don’t seem to notice in the darkness of the domed nests. Eggs are incubated by the host birds. When the baby Cuckoos hatch, they get rid of any chicks or eggs which are in the nest. Host parents are left with just one baby bird to raise. Young Cuckoos leave the nests and are ready to fly after about 1822 days.

bronze-green on wings and head, with broken black bars on neck, underparts and tail. Their eyes are red which makes them easy to distinguish from the other Bronze-Cuckoos if you can get close enough to see them. Their call is a descending whistling trill. Open forests, mangroves, rainforest edges and melaleuca swamps are the habitats which they mostly prefer. In Australia they are found in a strip from around Broome along the northern coastline to northern NSW. Other countries where they are found are Indonesia, Malaysia and PNG. Insects and their larva are their preferred food which are mostly hunted from a perch and taken from foliage and on the ground. Insects are often caught on the wing. Breeding is usually from September to February. Little Bronze-Cuckoos are parasitic and lay one brown, small egg in each of their preferred host bird’s nests. They use the nests of Gerygones and other small birds that build domed nests. The main threats to Bronze-Cuckoos are cats, loss of habitat and flying into windows.

Shining Bronze-Cuckoos are sometimes called Golden Bronze Cuckoos and are similar to other Bronze-Cuckoo species. They were first recorded in NSW in 1801. Little Bronze-Cuckoos (Chrysococcyx minutillus) are very rarely seen on Bribie Island but there has been the odd sighting mostly in October. HISTORY

BRIBIE TRANSPORT 1950’S SHIP to ROAD TRANSPORT Stan and Alma Marquardt ran a small trucking operation at Mondure in Wondai Shire. They decided to submit a tender and in July 1951 travelled down to visit Bribie Island and speak with residents and businesses, measure distances, estimate volumes and evaluate the prospect of business success. Initial reactions from Bribie merchants were mixed, as they had relied on twice-weekly steamship deliveries for a long time.

Koopa leaving Bribie motor cars became popular, despite the long rough bumpy dirt road trip from Caboolture.

or 40 years after the Jetty was constructed at Bongaree in 1912, everything and everyone coming to and from Bribie Island were by ship. After WW2 in 1947, an intermittent barge service started operating from Toorbul Point (now Sandstone Point) when 36

For 40 years all goods, food, materials, fuel, water and equipment were brought over by steamship from Brisbane and unloaded at the Jetty. In the early 1950s the Tug Co. sold the declining

Steamship KOOPA to a private Bribie syndicate who attempted to maintain the service. It did not last very long and was soon abandoned, as the future of road transport took hold. In mid-1951, the Government called tenders for a new Goods Transport service to operate between Brisbane and Bribie Island.

Stan Marquardt decided to submit a tender based on current railway charges, which were 2 pounds 10 shillings ($5) per ton and 2 shillings and 6 pence (25 cents) per parcel. His first customers were likely to the few Bribie Shops (Vines, Campbell’s, Brennan, Winston, Renton) Milk vendor (Christoferson) Hotel (Dudley) Pies (Young) Butcher (Camp) and Baker (Kling). It was several months before being advised by the Government that he had won the Tender, and Marquardt was then required to commence the service immediately in March 1952.

First Transport Truck 1952 – Brisbane to Bribie Island via Toorbul Point

MARQUARDT TRANSPORT They sold their house and business in Mondure, and with Alma pregnant with their second daughter, rented a house on Bribie for 12 shillings and 6 pence a week ($1.25) and moved here. They kept their 5-ton truck, which required suitable signage to comply with requirements. They had it painted and launched the “Brisbane to Bribie Island via Toorbul Point goods transport service. This was a big step for the whole family with just 50 Pounds in the Bank, a toddler and pregnant wife and starting a new business from scratch.

There were also many large loads of Bottles and Cans, which remarkably survived the noisy bumpy road trips and the empties on return. Reversing fully laden trucks on to the rocking barge in rough weather provided many exciting moments.

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS SOLD

BUSINESS GREW QUICKLY

The first truck road service was on 10 March 1952 with a drum of Tallow from the Butcher and 200 loaves of bread from the Baker.

Businesses and shops on Bribie soon recognised the benefits of more frequent and timely deliveries both to and from Brisbane markets, and this contributed to the termination of the Steamship Koopa service within a few months.

The new service had been initially approved for three days a week, and with no phone, unreliable barge service, dreadful road surfaces, and hygiene controls that were hard to enforce.

Marquardt Transport had the sole rights to service Bribie from Brisbane and it was soon carrying soft drinks and ice cream in dry ice containers, small and large Parcels, Furniture, Beer and Groceries.

Mullet Fish Catch Within months, the service was extended to every day on demand, and the workload, paperwork and communications soon became too demanding and complex to operate from Bribie. The Marquardt family bought a house in Zillmere where they continued to live for the next 43 years. A second truck was required as the variety of good grew to include Meat, Milk, Fuel, Fruit, Vegetables and even huge loads of fresh Mullet from the beach fishermen.

The business was a big success but the workload was hard and demanding on a family with two small children and growing health problems. Stan Marquardt had done very well, working hard to establish and build a business from nothing. As far back as 1953, the Government had even started talking about building a bridge to Bribie, which offered even greater opportunities. They decided to sell their successful Transport business to Braithwaite and the family took a long and well-deserved holiday. Of course, it was 12 years later in 1963 before a Bribie Bridge would be constructed. Marquardt Park proud family 2002

ur Master Class Portrait Workshop run by John Lomas and held at the Arts Centre, Sunderland Drive was a huge success with a full house of 30 photographers from Noosa, Peninsula, Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Aspley, Beaudesert and Bribie Island clubs participating. John brought along helpers to assist with the 4 groups and 5 beautiful models spent their time dressing and posing for the full day.

It was a perfect winter’s day, a little bit chilly but with no wind. The day began with a most enlightening talk on light and portraiture by John Lomas, a master in his craft. This was followed by a delicious morning tea. After learning “how to” we then put into practice the skills suggested in the talk. With the help of various lights, deflectors, diffusers and cameras of all makes we set to work to photograph our lovely models with the guidance of an experienced portrait

photographer assigned to each group. The models had brought a wardrobe of fascinating costumes and props and were able to keep the photographers involved and busy for the whole day. Groups were working in the boardroom, in the courtyard and in the grounds outside using many of the interesting backgrounds that were already in place.

SOCIAL CONCERNS AND ABSTRACT TAKE HONOURS IN MATTHEW FLINDERS ART PRIZE 2019 A sculpture of melted plastic bottles resembling coral, tied together with fishing line has won local artist Christine Miles the 2019 Matthew Flinders Art prize. “Morning Catch ‘’ by Christine, from Bongaree, was announced the winner of the first prize of $5000 at the Friday night opening of the MFAP by judges Lyne Marshall and Michael Brennan.

Point, for his soulful depiction “On Being 2”’ and also to Craig Rohse, from Deception Bay, for his startling and confronting photograph of a troubled veteran titled “Why War: 2”. Commended awards went to glass artist Lyn Storey, for her classically simple work “Davida’’ and to Molly Galpil, for “ In My Grandmother’s Garden’’, a boldly coloured reversepainted urn.

The judges praised the work’s ingenuity, composition and loud message that spoke to them of the artist’s concern for her beautiful Bribie Island waterways and the threat posed by littering of plastic into them. Second prize of $2000 went to Glenda Charles, also from Bribie, for her diptych “Border Ranges’’, a subtly hued abstract, denoting the autumnal and warm colours, textures and shapes of landscape beloved by her.

The judges praised the exhibition, which will show in the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre Matthew Flinders Gallery until August 9, for reflecting a high standard of artistic expression and technique. They said the works showed a pronounced concern, pride and love for the Bribie Island environment.

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Boy Arnie’s Vision: Stay Hungry ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER

W

By Helly Kemp

ho would have ever thought that an unhappy little boy, born in 1947 in Thal, the tiniest of villages in the Austrian Steiermark, would become an international icon with a life more interesting than even he himself could have dreamt of? But that is Arnie Schwarzenegger all the way! And why unhappy?

Well, his father, a policeman, noncommissioned army officer and member of the Nazi Party, (unlike Arnie, a lifelong member of “Friends

of Israel”) displays a strong and blatant favouritism for Arnie’s older brother Meinhard, because of an unfounded suspicion that Arnie is not his biological child. But Arnie loves Meinhard and looks up to him for everything, yet does not attend his funeral, when Meinhard is killed in a car accident in 1971, as he cannot bear to see his father. The father would never listen to or understand young Arnie, lavishing him with corporal punishment for the slightest thing. But at 14 Arnie wins the battle with his father of taking up bodybuilding instead of soccer. Besides, I so sympathize with Arnie’s regimented parental upbringing, as I too, also Austrian born and close to Arnie’s age, suffered the identical problems, all of which makes you strive for the impossible and by persisting you do achieve it. My favorite song ‘CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN’ beautifully portrayed in ‘THE SOUND OF MUSIC,’ summarizes it perfectly and has been my life-long motto.

Conan Arnie is already a savvy, self-made millionaire before even starting his first major movie to be released in 1982, ‘CONAN THE BARBARIAN.’ But the name of his first film ‘STAY HUNGRY’ last year (1976), means more than just a movie title to Arnie. Stay hungry is his motto for the rest of his life, hungry to achieve, hungry to be the best at everything he touches, hungry to win, hungry for accolade, fame and fortune and accomplished friends in every walk of life. It is something very Austrian. My father too, always encouraged me to find friends who were smarter and more intelligent than I, so I would learn from them. But with his innate ability to succeed, Arnie does not have to learn too much. From his bodybuilding career and winning the Mr Universe, Mr World,

Mr International and Mr Olympia contests many times and, having been the youngest man ever at 20 to do so, he never spends his winnings. Instead, he invests them in an apartment building, world-wide real estate, privately controlled companies, stocks, bonds, sporting events, business ventures and even achieves a business degree from the Los Angeles U.C.L.A. I first meet the 30-year-old prolific goal setter for a most unusual luncheon in the most exclusive French restaurant in London’s Piccadilly. After my urgent veterinary consultation at Regents Park Zoo that morning, there is no time to take my tiny Squirrel Monkey, Kya and her baby back home to Middlesex. I can’t leave her in my soft-top 280SL Mercedes, as the risk of someone stealing this precious little

creature with even just a pocket knife through the roof is far too great. I feel embarrassed, but turn up with Kya on my arm, asking the maitre d’ of the restaurant, if they might have a storage room where she could stay while Schwarzenegger and I have lunch. But instead, Kya is served delicious food on a silver platter under our table. “I didn’t get any more satisfaction out of competing and winning by 1975,” Arnie’s gruff voice is quite distinctive as he explains. “Bodybuilding was a stepping stone, a means to an end, and as I finished my competitive years, I was using it more and more as a vehicle. It helped me a lot in business and in other areas, because if you have a ‘name,’ you do much better. You can get loans from the bank for business. Subconsciously people are just impressed with size and winners.”

REGULAR FEATURE At this point, Arnie forgets his food in his earnestness to touch on a subject very interesting to him. “Through all the different civilizations it’s been proved that the presentation of the body is always very important. Whatever it was, Hercules, the Greek statues or the Roman soldiers, they were all muscular. Look at the way Michelangelo painted his male figures and the way Rodin sculpted muscular ones. It was always a presentation of power.” You don’t necessarily agree with every word Arnie says, to appreciate that he has studied his subject and thought about it at length. And you’d be made of asbestos not to succumb to the boyish charm that robs the words of pomposity and keeps them just the right side of comic. Looking across the restaurant table I find Arnie slimmer and slighter than expected, and apart from the biceps that thrust

1970’s

Kya and Baby

outwards against his sleeves, he is not bulging in any unusual places. Only the excessive ratio of his shoulders to his waist, two to one, gives away that this man does not make his living sitting behind an office desk. “I have been really fascinated by the people I have met in the last few years,” he continues in a wondering tone, “people I would otherwise have had no chance to meet, like political leaders, Presidents, Prime Ministers, the Kennedy’s. The

1960’s Kennedy family invited me to Hyannisport and Rose Kennedy gave me two copies of her book, inscribed in German, one for me and one for my mother.” If occasionally Arnie gives the impression of having approached his dream-come-true position with just a shade of too much calculation he will mitigate it by revealing the side of himself that is still as breathless and starstruck as a school-boy, his nose pressed against the windowpane.

AUGUST EVENTS & ACTIVITIES BEACHMERE

By Chris Connolly

THE WHITE CROW

This “slice of life” film, based on the early life of the renowned Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, was directed by Ralph Fiennes and inspired by J. Kavanaugh’s book on Nureyev. Played by Ukrainian dancer Oleg Ivenko, “The White Crow” not only gives us an inkling into what influenced Nureyev’s quest for artistic freedom but also gives us a taste of his stunning talent. Through a series of flashbacks, we become acquainted with the young, impoverished Nureyev whose kindly mother gives him a glimpse of the arts and provides him with dance instruction. Nureyev’s eventual acceptance into Leningrad’s Vaganova Ballet Academy is where the story unfolds. Dissatisfied with the initial instruction focussed on form, Nureyev enters the class of Alexander Pushkin, played by Fiennes. Pushkin’s approach allows Nureyev to move beyond pure technique to perfect his talent.

The opportunity to perform in Paris with his dance Company serves to change the course of Nureyev’s life. He becomes mesmerised by the artistic expression found in Paris and immerses himself in the freedom of its nightlife. Defying his Soviet minders, he strives to develop, at times with vulnerability, his identity in the relationships he subsequently forms. The story climaxes with the ultimate choice Nureyev must make to ensure a future imbued with professional and personal freedom. Oleg Ivenko is remarkable as Nureyev. Interestingly, he needed to learn English in order to play this role. Be moved by his dancing and by the dancers of the Soviet Kirov Ballet Company as you enjoy this portrayal of Nureyev’s early life.

How good is your vehicle security? Most car thefts, and theft from cars, are opportunistic in nature however, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of having your car stolen or broken into. What you can do: • Park in well-lit and highly visibly areas whenever possible, utilising off street and secured parking. • When parking in a garage, ensure both the garage and vehicle are locked and the garage door remotes are secured. • Avoid marking your keys with personal or vehicle details including name, phone number or registration details. • Consider installing a car alarm or steering wheel lock to help protect your vehicle. • Use lockable devices to help keep your vehicle secure including lockable fuel caps, wheel nuts, spare tyre covers and roof racks. • Consider installing a remote engine immobiliser which meets Australian Standards. • Consider installing a GPS tracker to your vehicle. Queensland Police Service encourages the use of anti-theft screws on number plates, to deter thieves. By using antitheft screws, you can help reduce your risk of number plate theft.

MAD POETS THE HEALING GARDEN

The breeze is wafting through the trees The wrens and finches are at my knees The flowers are open with dew on their face And I realize how healing it is in this place The bird bath is a quiet retreat For all of the birds who like to meet The leaves are scattered over the ground As the sunshine glistens from the canopy crown Small lizards dart here and there As I sit and ponder this world I share Not very often do we sit and be open To natures call no words are spoken The touch of the breeze as it caresses your face The smell of the fragrance that floats through the place The mulch on the floor of this forest knell Puts you in a time of natures spell All those who come and visit this place Are touched by the garden and its healing embrace by Sharmayne Kurtz 10/11/08

CURLY HAIR

Hair can be blonde and red or just plain black Mousy brown and kind of flat Straight and long mid length or short You just wash it comb it and you’re out the door Now my curly hair starts to kink Moist air just brings it to the brink You can use a curling iron and make it flat But in a minute it starts to curl back The cupboard is full of miracle hair products From gel to lotion and spray bottle muck ups Even the hairdresser can give it a go But the moist air will create its own show Wake up in the morning and the curls are out The need of an afro comb to control the bout Of unruly curls that have no place They sit where they sit not nice and straight Now I inherited this curl from Dads Mum She wore her hair short not in a bun It was frizzy when dry but looked better when it was wet She never complained about it and yet My hair is never the same from one day to the next

BEACH REPORT

By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours.

T

he track from Woorim to the beach is very rough and soft, we are experiencing a spate of people who are not letting their tyres down to 20 psi. Some drivers think 28 or 30 will do, then end up bogged. To ensure you minimise the potential of bogging make sure you let your tyres down to 20 psi and be careful when you drive off, you don’t want wheel spin.

Saturday morning at 1:00 am saw us recovering some Korean Nationals driving a front-wheel-drive vehicle from the National Park. They had been lost and then bogged for 10 hours before a 000 call got them to us. One hour later they were on their way. Unfortunately, good old Google maps took them to the spot where they had their misadventure, as it has done to several people lately. If you happen to see vehicles going places they should not, please get their rego, phone the Rangers, let them work out why they were there. We even had a motorbike at Gallagher Point, everyone should know motorbikes and dune buggies have never been allowed in the national park, why! I’ve been asked this question many times. Put simply and arguably motorbikes and dune buggies generally spin their rear wheels continually in order to gain traction.

Driver says he followed online map directions Remember if you don’t want to expose your 4x4 to potential salt damage (Ocean Beach) let us do the driving, we offer a 5 hour tour for just $75 which includes a chicken/salad lunch, soft drink, bottled water, visiting our ww2 bunkers, fort Bribie, a 3 hour tour is also available. The inland track has dried out but it is still quite soft in places. The track to Gallagher Point is soft in one spot about 50 metres from the start of the track. DRIVING TIP: If you don’t have a lot of clutch pedal left (travel before it engages) don’t go in the sand you’ll burn it out as a lot more is required of your clutch in soft sand.

Last week’s loss still in the back of our mind we took it to the Maleny team and smashed in 3 great goals against our full team opponents in the first half. Unfortunately, we picked up another injury, with defender Cassidy Buckman going down late in the first half. The Bribie midfield controlled the game, key performers being Brit Bowden and Chelsea Falzon with Jear Cochrane deadly coming out of defence. With only 9 players the Bribie ladies held out the game for a good 3 nil win. We will be hoping to get a couple of our injured players back in the next few weeks, just before the finals. The Tigress’s next game is against Noosa, at home on Friday the 26th July, 7 pm kick off. Would love to hear your support down at the club.

We would also like to thank all our volunteer coaching staff (Assistant Coaches, Managers, First Aid Officers & League Safe) who will be assisting these awesome people this year.

BOWLS Bribie Bowls results week ending 26.07.19 SATURDAY BOWLS

Winners: Linda Williams, Heather Groves, Jessica Parolin, Mary Geddes

MBDLBA Champion of Champion Fours winners results Zone C of Champion playoff at Coolum Beach on 4th August.

Runners Up: Skip Linda Mitchell from Pine Rivers

AFL Bulldogs Back on Top The Bribie Island Bulldogs AFL side returned to the top of the ladder after a convincing win over Marcellin Old Boys on Friday night in what was near perfect conditions. Right from the first bounce, the Bulldogs controlled the centre clearances giving star forwards Joshua Bear and Jack Bentley plenty of scoring opportunities. Tate Gilmore and Jake Hedley once again were at their brilliant best through the midfield as were Lachie Glew through his ruck work. Even though it was a great result senior coach Matt Hartup is not getting too carried away the win, it was a vastly different Marcellin team we played on Friday night than we played a few weeks ago, we still have areas to improve on but I believe we are heading in the right direction heading towards the finals. Bribie takes on Ipswich Cats this Saturday at 2.00 PM at home in what should be another cracking match. Get down and support the Mighty Doggies. (Free Entry). Final Score, Bribie Island 26.13.169 Marcellin Old Boys 1.3.9 - Goal Kickers: J. Bear 5, J. Bentley 4, D. Scott 3, J. Macgregor 3, H. Crombie 2, R. Dobson Munday 2, T. Gilmore 2, S. Molloy 2, L. YOUR SAY

RANTS & RAVES Dear Editor, Back to the Future! I read with interest your story on the proposed Emergency facility on the Island and thought – “what an awesome idea”! Then I got to “Rants and Raves” and read Susan Kopittke’s letter seemingly decrying the idea. I thought, WHY? While we all agree that more money should indeed be given to supporting the many activities Susan raised, I could not, in all honesty, understand why she felt the Emergency facility should not proceed. This facility would be for the Island, and surrounding areas – e.g. Ningi and Sandstone Point. Hardly a small area as she suggested. There would seem no real evidence to support her claims the facility would “overservice” these areas – just anecdotal comments. In fact, it would provide a much-needed service for our ever-ageing population. A real plan for Bribie’s future! Yes – dementia, cerebral palsy, youth disability, drug addiction, etc are all worthy of help – but all could be helped via the proposed facility – i.e. in providing a centre where people could meet and a central point for advice. Perhaps a meeting room could be provided for community 62

groups at the new facility, with an area set aside for information pamphlets – and coffee/tea and biscuits provided. But the facility would certainly not prevent the elderly from mixing with the community. Its plans suggest specific ideas to combat this (e.g. the childcare centre). A 24/7 Emergency centre is one thing we do lack on the Island and could be lifesaving for many of us in the coming years. Day surgery carried out here is via Caboolture or Northlakes – via visiting specialists would surely be preferable by the majority of patients – saving them time and money. A five-minute trip at 2 am for a life-saving action would surely be preferable to a 35-minute trip to Caboolture plus the wait for the ambulance. A centralised point for doctors, dentists, radiology and pathology, would be welcomed by many – especially those who lack ready transport. The proposed cafe and store would also assist in this. The point is made that the facility will specifically also look at “services” that are not currently available on Bribie. Surely, again, a benefit to us all. We all know how long things take to “get going”. I feel this idea should be given all the help it needs

and praise the Vaid’s for their forethought and care. Ms Kopittke’s suggestion for help in many areas are worthy of thought and support, but surely not at the expense of something that is clearly needed and would benefit us all – now and in the future! Or – like the road and bridge – we leave it until it becomes critical! Cheers, Michael Matthews. Bribie Island.

Dear Editor, If you ever moan about the parking on Bribie then I suggest you think again! I went to Spring Hill and parked for 1 hour and 9 minutes and it cost me a whopping $40.92!!! What a joke. I could have bought several outfits at Busy Fingers for that amount of money!

Dear Editor, It seems that if one does not have your dog off the leash you have to pay a penalty. Picture taken at Woorim Off leash Beach Section! Jan Van-Arnhem, Bribie.

Dear Editor, Back when recycling bottles etc was worth 10c each, the local Scouts, Guides and so on used to have collection points where you could donate your empties. Good money for them, more drop-off options for you. Now that the scheme has been brought back (why was it ever stopped?) is this practice being revived? If so, perhaps your readers may know who’s doing it, and where? Regards, Diana Grey, Bribie.

Dear Editor,

Pat Simpson, Bongaree.

I wanted to say I love your magazine, it’s well laid out and full of local and interesting, informative information. Keep up the good work Paul Taylor, Bellara.

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

It’s sad to think we only care when our precious wildlife isn’t sitting in an aesthetically pleasing position. When are we going to see action to actually protect our local wildlife?

This one is beautiful.

Justin Foster, Bongaree.
