The Bribie Islander
RECYCLING PLANT COMES TO BRIBIE
R
ecycling is certainly not a new term in today’s “throwaway” world. Many everyday items end up as landfill when much more can be done to use them in future production. As a society we have become used to separating our household rubbish in different coloured bins, hoping that the recyclable rubbish can find a new life, sometimes as an entirely different product. The Bribie Islander offers a big welcome to the general manager Paul Mullen and his team at the recently opened Express Recycling at 21 Armitage Street, Bongaree (opposite the Bus Depot). Paul explained to our reporter that the company has had many years of experience in this industry in other states. The staff are all locals and they aim to give top customer service and assistance with advice for future collections and to make the experience a pleasure to return again and recycle the next batch of containers. Every “single-use” beverage container from aluminium cans, beer bottles to flavoured milk and drink bottles (up to 3-litre size) attracts a 10c refund but wine bottles, straight spirit bottles and plain milk containers are not acceptable as yet. Bottle caps will need to be removed but Express Recycling are happy to take them as they will be recycled too. Local businesses are also encouraged to bring their containers to support this locally owned and operated
business. What a great way to earn some extra cash or top up the family budget. Only 10 eligible items bring a $1 refund so start collecting them rather than throwing them away, $2.40 for every slab of empty beer bottles! Besides offering a cash refund for collecting, Express Recycling is playing a major part in helping our environment. So many bottles, cans and poppers are dumped by the roadside or left in our parks and on our beaches –help keep Australia cleaner and safer by recycling. As we now have our recycling plant on Bribie Island it will service all nearby areas so begin collecting your single-use cans and bottles now and get paid for them on the spot in cash or into your bank account and support one of our local businesses. “Let’s Keep It Local!” TRADING HOURS Mon - Fri 8:00am - 4:30pm Saturday 9:00am - 2:00pm

Did you know we are 5 years old this issue? I started The Bribie Islander from an idea back in August 2014 as a monthly newspaper, wow how time flies. Realising the need for more frequency, from our readers and advertisers, 3 years later I added a monthly gloss magazine for good measure, so we were twice a month in newsprint and magazine and here we are now 5 years later every 2 weeks in a gloss! Newsprint is declining and gloss magazines are the way forward! It’s great to hear from our readers of Bribie’s most loved community magazine, the lovely positive feedback, thank you!
Until next time, I hope you enjoy issue #94 and remember to smile and be happy! Living the dream on Bribie and nearby areas, what a great place to be :0) Richard.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said that choosing a healthy diet, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, provides many health benefits, including reducing your risk of cancer.
PREVENTATIVE HEALTH: FRUITS AND VEGGIES TO KEEP YOU WELL THIS WINTER
W
hat’s a key part of a nutritious diet? Most of us can automatically recite the answer: fruits and vegetables.
While winter may not feel like the best time to be tucking into a tropical fruit salad, there are loads of healthy fruits
“Research has shown that around 1800 cases of cancer in Australia per year are attributed to not eating enough fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre. “Sufficient intake of fruit and vegetables also gives both adults and children an abundance of vitamins
“So next time you reach for a snack, pack your lunch, or do the shopping, think about how many serves of fruit and vegetables you can incorporate into your diet.” Here are some tips to inspire your shopping basket and increase your winter fruit and vegetable intake. Bone-chilling Berries. They might be small, but berries pack a punch when it comes to fighting off colds. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries all contain high levels of antioxidants, which help strengthen your immune system. An easy way to incorporate these berry-licious foods into your daily winter warmers is by sprinkling them over your morning

of vegetables per day, while 27 per cent are eating the recommended two serves of fruit a day.*

oats to naturally sweeten up your breakfast. Brrrr Bananas. While bananas can be found yearround on the supermarket shelves, winter is the perfect time to get a banana boost – and by boost we mean the rich potassium goodness found in the fruit that aids muscle and bone strength. Get your winter baking sorted with a batch of healthy banana bread or muffins that can easily be warmed up for a toasty snack. Chilly Citrus. Achoo! Don’t let the notorious winter cold catch you. Keep the germs at bay by stocking up on Vitamin C – aka – citrus fruits such as oranges, mandarins, lemons, and limes. For a tropical taste that will convince you summer has stuck around, pack a snack box with orange slices, fill your water bottle with lime slices, and drizzle lemon juice over a green salad.
Artic Apples. There’s a reason they say ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ - apart from their nutritious aspects, you can get a delicious (red or green) apple 365 days of the year. While they’re the perfect snack-on-the-go, if you’re looking for new ways to sink your teeth into a pink lady, why not stew them to have with Greek yoghurt or low-fat custard. Polar Pumpkins. What do you get when you mix winter and pumpkins? Pumpkin soup of course! Cook up a batch of pumpkin, sweet potato, garlic, onion, and leek and puree to produce a creamy soup.

REHABILITATION – A JOURNEY FOR PATIENT AND FAMILY

build independence and maximizing quality of life across a range of activities and environments.
It can mean increased time in hospital, being away from family or friends and the familiar comforts of home.
“We believe family are the people that matter the most and knowing you the best, can play a great role in the recovery process,” Lara said.
At Peninsula Private Hospital, the rehabilitation team acknowledges these challenges and aim to provide a reassuring, supportive environment where each patient is treated within the context of their individual social, cultural and family background. Peninsula Private’s Allied Health Manager Lara Paech said the hospital’s rehabilitation programs aim to restore function,
“With the patients’ consent, we encourage and support involving families or carers in creating goals for rehab, determining priorities, implementing treatment strategies and planning for discharge and life after rehab.” Being in hospital can be an overwhelming experience. However, Lara said knowing that your family are included in the process

“It also eases the stressors involved with transitioning back home after a hospital stay.
“An ability to use all these factors together enables care that addresses specific outcomes and helps shape a truly individual and personal rehab experience.
“Our multi-disciplinary team strive to develop therapeutic relationships beyond just the clinical patient interaction and instead provide a holistic service looking at things like lifestyle, support network, interests and obstacles.” Lara said Peninsula Private Hospital’s inclusive approach results in numerous benefits, particularly if family helping contribute to therapy time and encourage following on home exercise programs, assistance with developing realistic, meaningful goals or ensuring open communication and understanding. A READER’S STORY one fan which lived on the floor, but this did not do much to keep me from suffering from the heat, so I took to the bath where I lay in cold water. “Where is Don’s new wife?” I would hear people ask. “Having a cold bath” would come the reply. I was hardly fit for visitors, so I would dive deeper into my aqueous refuge. I soon learned about mosquitoes. Why would they bother biting anyone else when they had delicious fresh flesh to feast upon? Those enormous Scotch Greys made straight for any part of my anatomy that was exposed.
ARRIVAL PART 1 H
After a few weeks, Don decided to introduce me to Bribie, tales of which he had used to encourage me to accompany him to his homeland.
By Elaine Lutton
ow well do I remember that November evening when I first stepped out of the plane that had brought me and my Australian husband to Brisbane International airport, only to be met by a blast of oven-hot air. It was 1969, I was about three months pregnant, and it was just beginning to dawn on me the enormity of the step I had taken in leaving family and friends behind in England. We were to begin our Australian life living with my mother-in-law whose last words to my husband Don had been, “Have a good time in the UK but for goodness sake do not come home with a Pommie wife.” I was understandably nervous, but Elvie turned out to be kind and understanding of the delicate flower that her son had transplanted to such foreign climes. The house at Windsor was an oldstyle Queenslander with a central living-room and bedrooms leading off the living room on to a closed-in veranda. There were no doors but that made it cool if somewhat lacking in privacy I thought. There was a bathroom upstairs, but downstairs, the wonder of wonders, was a giant shower and an automatic washing machine, something I had never seen before in my entire life. I was still suffering from morning sickness but could enjoy pineapples and strawberries, on which I lived until my nausea abated. There was

We travelled by bus as we had not yet acquired a car. Dwelpine, the beach house I was to learn to love so much, was, at first sight, a bit of a shock. Yes, it did have electricity, and water from a rainwater tank. I turned the tap and water gushed forth, but what were all those wrigglers in the glass? Don gently explained that for a while, at least, we would need to boil the water before drinking it! A further horror was to follow almost immediately. My legs began to itch. I looked down and found them covered in fleas. This did not seem to worry my husband who quickly grabbed a kind of pump which contained some form of insecticide, and pumped away until the floor was covered with tiny corpses. Since the house had not been used for some time, flea eggs had lain dormant until our footsteps had woken them from their slumber and convinced them it was time for breakfast. We were staying the night and so two beds were pushed together. Don found a large mosquito net and a sheet and we settled down for the night, waking to a glorious sunny morning. We put on our bathers and rushed down to the beach where we found an old wooden boat, not in the best condition, but it stayed afloat as long as I bailed and Don rowed. We were at some distance from the shore when I heard a strange blowing sound and a head appeared beside us. It was a large turtle. I was beside myself with excitement but my husband had decided it was time for my next lesson.
The Bribie Islander
We headed for the beach and Don decided that if we were to eat that night, we had better catch some fish. He rigged up the rods and demonstrated how to cast using an Alvey reel, always my favourite, and being an amazingly quick learner, I followed suit. Imagine my joy, and perhaps amazement, when I felt a tug on the line and following instructions, hauled in a sizable fish which I took off the line feeling very pleased with myself. Husband, not so impressed, could not stop laughing and said I had a lot to learn. Apparently, one does not catch mullet with a hook and sinker. All was not lost and later that day I was showing him that my zoology degree was not in vain, and I was catching winter whiting like a professional. I might also add that I learned how to catch, scale and fillet as well as any man, plus packet fish ready for freezing. And I could cook the fish in a delicious beer batter, not such a useless Pom after all! I gave up attempts at baking bread when I discovered Kling’s Bakery, which did the job more efficiently and with less effort on my part. Tomatoes came from Sister Ursula at St Michael’s. They were five cents a pound if I remember correctly. Meanwhile, Don kept missing out on better and better employment, but I look back on those days together as pure bliss. Even the rat that landed on my face in the middle of the night had its humour. My “Hero” grabbed a broom and chased the rodent into what was laughingly called the washroom, one cold tap and an enamel basin, from whence I heard thumps and bangs until there was silence. The victorious hero entered the bedroom holding the bloodied rodent by the tail. It was a wonder that the daughter did not arrive before the expected date, but again, my previous experience in handling rats, came in useful, and we were able to see the funny side of the experience. Eventually, Don did obtain a job, and I did my bit by giving birth to a baby girl and so the next episode will be called Post-Partum. *All articles can be found on our website: thebribieislander.com.au (subscribe for updates on local stuff)

ROTARY Polio victims in the 1950’s neck and pain in the limbs. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually in the legs). Among those paralysed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilised.’ There is no cure for polio! However, it can be prevented by vaccination. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, can protect a child for life.

PREVENTION AND PERILS! By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary

n a marathon race, many competitors say the last part of the run is always the most difficult and many a runner has ‘Hit the Wall’ in the final stages. So it is with Polio eradication. Michael Zaffran, Head of Polio eradication at the World Health Organisation, expressed it well when he said ‘The last mile has proven to be the toughest phase of the polio eradication.’ On Saturday 13 July 2019, the Courier-Mail ran a front-page article titled ‘Polio Peril.’ The article talked about the plunging vaccination rates across southeast Queensland. It also gave statistics showing areas where vaccination rates had fallen and informed readers of the fact that Polio is just a plane ride away from Australia. It is hard to believe that, in Australia today, we still have people who decry

vaccination and claim it is harmful. However, the reality is that vaccinations save many millions of lives – and lifestyles - every year. We, therefore, must educate people to realise the benefits of vaccination – especially against polio. It was Nelson Mandela who said ‘education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It mainly affects children under 5. The World Health Organisation says that the ‘virus invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. The virus is transmitted by personto-person spread mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (for example, contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine. Initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness of the

Over the last 30 years, Rotary has made the eradication of Polio it’s Number One Priority. By the end of 2018 over 99.9% of cases had been eradicated with only 33 cases reported that year. We were on a count down to complete eradication and a Polio free world. Unfortunately, the latest figures show that the wild polio virus remains entrenched in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and in Africa, the vaccine itself is generating virulent strains (see ‘vaccine derived Polio’ below). In Pakistan, polio health workers are often met with hostility and violence. In April 2019, fuelled by rumours on social media that children were being poisoned by the polio vaccinations, people rioted killing one polio worker and the two police officers guarding her. Likewise, the eradication program in Afghanistan is complicated due to the violence across much of the country and by the refusal of some communities to accept the vaccination programs.
Last year’s vaccinederived polio outbreak in Papua New Guinea is now under control following a massive vaccination program. Vaccine-derived polio virus (VDPV) is a mutated version of the weaker polio virus used in vaccinations. VDPVs are rare and happen in populations with very low vaccination rates. They develop when children who have not been vaccinated come into contact with the faeces of vaccinated children. This video provides an excellent explanation of VDPV: http:// polioeradication.org/poliotoday/polio-prevention/ the-virus/vaccine-derivedpolio-viruses/ A massive vaccination program is the only way to stop VDPVs. Africa can bring this outbreak under control and thus finally realise Nelson Mandala’s edict of ‘kicking Polio out of Africa.’ So reports that polio is just a plane flight away from Australia, and indeed, Bribie, are not scaremongering. The reality is that low immunisation rates are a recipe for an outbreak and no place on earth is safe from polio until the disease is eradicated everywhere. Bill Gates (who contributes US$2 for every $1 Rotary raises to End Polio) puts it this way - ‘As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children — wherever they live — remain at risk. The stakes are that high.’

What can you do to help?
US$100 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio. Of this Afghanistan will receive $16.3 million, Nigeria $10.2 million and Pakistan $25.2million. Additional funding will support efforts to keep vulnerable countries polio-free. Michael McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee, said that he was ‘optimistic that the end of polio is within our grasp, but we must remain vigilant in rallying global political and financial support as we push towards a poliofree world.’
1. If you know an antivaxxer show them photos of children with polio and urge them to have their children vaccinated immediately. Just because you live in Australia does not mean you are immune or that Polio won’t affect your loved ones. 2. Hold a Worlds Greatest Meal to End Polio (WGM). See: https://wgmeal.com/ 3. Donate directly to Rotary https://www.rotary.org/ en/donate One crucial step in this quest is the need to Stop Complacency! Even some Rotarians are saying they have grown tired of the Polio campaign and are considering sending their funds elsewhere. Many have become desensitised to the campaign. We are so close to a Polio free world now is not

had this horrid disease, or who have friends suffering post-polio syndrome, they will understand why we must ensure it never returns. Robert de Castella – the great marathon runner - perhaps said it best, ‘There are no shortcuts!’ We must vaccinate every child.
We clearly have it in our hands to finish this marathon – and not “hit the wall”. We can ensure that no child will ever be paralysed by any form of poliovirus – be it wild or vaccine-derived. If readers like me remember children from their childhood who

WINELANDER I always start off the weekend having a look at Des Houghton’s Quaff column in the Courier Mail and his recommendations which often would require something of a bank loan to try, however this week he showcased a couple of reasonably priced award winners from the recent Royal Queensland Wine Show. If you missed the article it mentioned the Jacobs Creek Le Petit Rose 2018 vintage made from Pinot Noir, Grenache and Mataro grapes and sells for around $15, A Wolf Blass Yellow Label 2017 Chardonnay selling for around $14 and A Windance Estate 2018 Margaret River Shiraz at $26 With a couple of friends arriving on Bribie for a few days from Perth via Cairns, 20
we knew it was going to be a fairly damp weekend eating hearty homemade food and drinking plenty of outstanding wines. On Thursday we started the evening with pea and ham soup with which we served a Rapaura Springs 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, this was followed by spaghetti bolognese and served with a Joel Gott 2017 Californian Zinfandel and a Sister’s Run 2017 McLaren Vale Shiraz. The Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc and The Sister’s Run both were bought at Liquorland and both wines were very good, as I have commented on before I believe when the Rapaura Springs, which has heaps of grassy overtones and finishes fresh and crisp, is on special it is one of the best buys around,

I paid $10 for the wine. I have bought The Sister’s Run before and again when on special for $12 which is around $8 off the normal price it represents very good value, being from McLaren Vale the wine has plenty of spicy aromas, it is a full-bodied style and fully recommended when the price is right again. When you take friends around you realise what jewels we have around us within a very short drive and Friday involved a trip up to Mooloolaba with a visit for lunch to the surf club and fish and chips with which we enjoyed a very acceptable Angove Long Row Riesling. Friday night began with some more pea and ham soup followed by a butter curry and this time one of the big
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au guns I have been saving for a rainy day came out of the wine fridge. To begin with, we started with an Angove Alternatus Small Batch Rose 2018 McLaren Vale Grenache, Tempranillo, Vermentino and Carignan which was crisp, pale pink, with dry light berry fruit and made a refreshing change from Sauvignon Blanc. This was a very well made wine with interesting grape components but McLaren Vale Grenache makes for some outstanding wines. This was followed by the wine of the week-end a Penfold’s 2012 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz which I bought from Dan Murphy’s vintage wine section several years ago, the wine had spicy peppery aromas and was probably wasted alongside the curry
but sometimes you just have to indulge! On Saturday after a mornings visit to The Eumundi market we had lunch at The Noosa Surf Club where garlic prawns was washed down with a Jim Barrie ‘W’ Riesling which is a fantastic bone dry white with lovely citrus aromas and is available from BWS for $20 then back home to try a couple of interesting fruit wines from our far north. Our visitors had brought with them a bottle of Golden Drop Sparkling Mango from Mareeba North Queensland and a bottle of Jaboticaba Tropical Dry Red from the Shannonvale tropical fruit winery which was a Brazilian Tree Grape which was said to be medium-bodied with plum-like aromas. The sparkling Mango lived up to its title and was served
with a cheese platter including a very pleasant Stilton and the wine went surprisingly well with this selection. However the second wine had aromas more in keeping with cough medicine and was quite disappointing, but the overall experience was very interesting as a change from everyday grape wines. Sunday evening was relatively light as the weekend came to a close and platters of assorted meat, cheese and olives were enjoyed with Taylor’s 2017 Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon which had aromas of black currents and an Angove Long Row 2018 Pinot Grigio which has aromas of apples and pears with a crisp and a fresh clean finish, a great weekend enjoyed by all. If you are interested in matching food with wine take a close look at the
back label and consider what the winemaker explains about the wine and what the characteristics of the wine are. For instance, if the wine has aromas of apples it almost certainly suits pork, look for a Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris, an unwooded Chardonnay or even a Viognier from Yalumba. Wines such as Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc with citrus characters will suit prawns, lobster and light seafood especially with a squeeze of lemon. Steak with a pepper sauce would suit a full-bodied Shiraz and if winter has brought out the lamb shanks or Osso Bucco enjoy with a cabernet sauvignon but use the wine as part of the gravy as well and never skimp on the quality used in the cooking serve the same wine with the finished course.
The friends have continued on their journey and everything is back to normal, Liquorland has Vin Vale Shiraz from Shingleback on special this week, everything that comes from this winery is always top draw including the Red Knot range from BWS or Dan Murphy’s. Cheers, Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au “Exercise makes you look good naked, so does wine, it’s your choice.” Anon “The secret of enjoying a good red wine: Open the bottle and let it breathe. TURNING PLASTIC INTO PROSTHETICS! By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary
This initiative is the brainchild of Sean Teer who is a Director of Envision Hands, a not-for-profit community organisation that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for kids. Envision Hands has partnered with the Rotary Club of Wyndham to deliver the Helping Hands project. CEO of Envision Hands, Steve Murphy, said that his team can custom-make a hand that allows the wearer to undertake basic tasks such as picking up a cup or holding a fork. The team also produce many other
June Sturges, Bec Bray and the Interact Students items that aid people with disabilities e.g. a device to open tin cans and another to help people more easily open doors with their keys. Pretty handy? This project is a win/win one because Envision Hands are also training and mentoring longterm unemployed job seekers and helping the environment by removing plastic waste. There are 2 1/2 times more bottle caps in the ocean than plastic bags and animals can choke on bottle caps. So, save your plastic bottle
Interact students preparing collection boxes tops and drop them off at BISHS or BISS. The Schools will then pass the bottle tops onto The Bribie Island Bowls Club who are an official collection point for Envision Hands. We often hear the expression – “I’d give a hand or a limb for that”. Here’s your chance to actually do it! It takes 100,000 (plastic) bottle tops to make one hand. So come on Briberians – Don’t bin make a limb!
FR Ca EE ll f o Q ra uo te
You’ve got to hand it to the Rotary Club of Bribie Island. They have just started an Interact Club at Bribie Island State High School (BISHS). For their first project Rotary’s Youth Director, June Sturges, and teacher Bec Bray have started the Club members collecting plastic bottle tops. The recycled plastic
bottle tops are then turned into prosthetic hands and arms. June has also managed to get the EarlyAct Club at Bribie Island State School (BISS) involved.

NATURE
NOISY FRIARBIRD –
Noisy Friarbird on Calistemon bush branches and up to 17 m above ground. Nests are lined with soft grass and wool if available. Clutches of 2-4 pinkish, mottled eggs are laid and incubated by females. Both parents defend the nests and feed the chicks for up to 21 days after fledging.
PHILEMON CORNICULATUS
Noisy Friarbirds were first recorded in 1790 by John Latham. They were called Friarbirds because their heads resembled the shaven heads Friars.
By Marj Webber
N
oisy Friarbirds are one of the two very common honeyeaters found on Bribie Island and surrounds. Little Friarbirds are also found here but are in smaller numbers. Noisy Friarbirds are large passerines 30-35 cm in length and weigh about 85-130g. Their heads and part of their necks are completely naked of feathers and covered with black skin. Because of this, they are often referred to as “Leatherheads”. They have the barest head of any of the four Australian species of Friarbirds. Another of their prominent features is
a knob on the top of their beak. Upper feathers are a dark brownish colour while the underparts are light grey with a tuft of whitish feathers under the chin. Eyes are red. Their calls are harsh and loud with “Tobacco” and “Four O’clock” being two of their many sounds. Their name implies their noisiness. Most of Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the Murray River region in SA are where they are most likely to be seen in woodlands, swampy forests, heathlands and parks and gardens in suburban areas. They are also found in PNG. Nectar, pollen, insects and fruit such as berries are
their favoured foods. Their behaviour becomes quite aggressive and noisy when feeding, often fighting among themselves and harassing other bird species and chasing them away. In our area, the Friarbirds are locally nomadic following the flowering trees for their nectar. In southern areas, they are mostly migratory flying north in the winter months. In some areas where farmers grow grapes and berries, they are considered a pest as they can be very destructive to crops. July to February is their favoured time for breeding. Females build open cup-like nests of bark and woven with cobwebs between thin

Common Koels are parasitic cuckoos which favour Friarbird nests. They push the existing eggs from the nest and lay their own which when hatched are parented by the Friarbirds causing the loss of a seasons breeding for them. Their conservation status is secure for now. Feral cats are always a worry. Land clearing decreases habitat but they have adapted well to suburbia and do well on the planted native trees in towns and cities. Next Issue – Little Friarbird

HISTORY
BRIBIE NEWS 130 YEARS AGO
1880’s there was seldom any News to be reported.
By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society
T
he first Bribie specific newspaper was the “Bribie Star” which was first published in 1962 and ran for more than a decade. Before that, any “News” about Bribie was reported in other Queensland newspapers. With nobody actually living on Bribie Island back in the
However, from time to time “The Brisbane Courier” newspaper ran a story that concerned Bribie Island, so it is interesting to see what odd things did happen that made the news. Here are a few examples of articles published in “The Brisbane Courier” and “The Queenslander” over 130 years ago, from 1887 when Bribie was considered as a rubbish dump, to 1922 when people came here to buy land and use the services. As with all newspaper articles, especially those from long ago, these need to be read in the context of the time.

T
he members of the Sanitary Conference met again yesterday afternoon at the Town Hall, Mr. Birkbeck pointed out that there was a place on Bribie Island where the refuse could be deposited on the surface. The additional cost might cover the cost of steaming out to Cape Moreton. The Mayor said that matter had been fully considered, and they found the cost of landing on Bribie Island would be greater than carrying it out to sea. Mr. John Watson, though admitting the committee had done their best, was satisfied that the refuse would yet be used on the farms or put on an island in the Bay. Kangaroo Island, opposite Doughboy, which was offered them by the Government, would be well suited for an experiment to show the farmers what could be done. He was strongly of opinion that depositing the refuse on Bribie Island was the best scheme. Mr. Hocker said that if they adopted the report it did not bind them to take the stuff to sea. When the bad weather came in they would have plenty of opportunities of depositing it on Bribie Island.

he Queensland Turf Club’s Spring Meeting at Eagle Farm did not pass off without one serious accident occurring. In the Flying Welter Handicap, which was the second event on Saturday’s programme. There was a field of seventeen starters, and after the horses had raced about a furlong Mr. T. Higgins’s horse, Idol, tripped and fell, bring Bribie down over him. Idol was killed instantly, having broken his neck, and his rider, a lad named Wheelehan, had his right arm badly smashed above the elbow. Bribie was also unfortunate, receiving injuries, which will prevent him from racing again, but his rider, F. Holmes, escaped with nothing more serious than some bruises and a shaking.

ribie Island Telephone Service has been advised by the Deputy Postmaster-General that it has now been decided to construct as early as possible a telephone line following the Caboolture River and the coast of Deception Bay to Bribie Island. The financial aspect of the work held the proposal up for a considerable time, but the Brisbane Tug Company has now offered to provide assistance in labour, supply of poles, &c., by way of contribution towards the cost of construction. The office at Bribie Island will be at the existing receiving office, and the present hours (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) will be observed. At Toorbul Point the office will be at the residence of Mr. Joe Campbell, and the hours will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Telegrams are to be called for at both places.

Water available on Bongaree.
T
he hon. secretary of the Bribie Progress Association (Mr. A.T. Hall) writes:- I would like to point out that the articles appearing in this (Tuesday) morning’s “Courier” might suggest that no water is available at Bribie Island, except that supplied by the Brisbane Tug Co. This is not so. For the benefit of those who intend visiting the island during the coming Christmas holidays I wish to point out that there is a very plentiful supply of water not only from the tanks which have been so generously supplied by the Brisbane Tug Co. free of cost, but from several wells on the island, which have pumps attached, giving always a bountiful quantity of water, which is not only free from any discolouration or disagreeable smell, but quite good for either drinking or cooking purposes, and compares most favourably with the tap water supplied in Brisbane. The charges of 1d. per kerosene tin, which has been recently made, is not owing to any shortage, but to stop people from deliberately wasting the water the company has taken the trouble to supply. At 1d. per kerosene tin, to equal my water rates in Brisbane I would have to consume 5376 gallons per annum, which I do not. Water Tanks at Bongaree

Committee members Lynne Smith ( left) and Sarah Cave
STILL SCRATCHING I f you have seen a group of strange people immersed in the trees and the mudflats along the shores of our beautiful island, you have probably seen the artists of a new exhibition on a “PAINT OUT”. Following on from their successful “Scratch the Surface” exhibition in 2018, four contemporary Bribie artists are having another scratch this year. The original members, Deidre Nelson, John Stegeman, Helen Hall and Cheryl Mortimer have been joined this year by well-known Bribie artist, Sue Gardner. All of these artists have an interest in the surface quality of the art, an
essence of place and people, and a passion for innovation. They have been out and about at Whitepatch, Solander, Sylvan and Woorim beaches letting the sand, sunshine, water, wind and shadows interplay with their surfaces. You are invited to come along to the Matthew Flinders gallery at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach to view these completed visual statements. The exhibition opening is at 2pm on Sunday 11th August and the exhibition runs from 11th August to 1 pm Sunday 25th August.

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER HARD-HEADED BUSINESS ACHIEVER But winning will always be at the forefront of Arnie’s life.
“To be the best in the world makes you feel unique and special. You gain a lot of confidence from winning,” he waxes lyrical about the joys of ‘being top.’ “You put in the effort and you can see what you’re getting out of it. That experience carries you to other areas and you gain financial benefits as well as great psychological impact you didn’t plan when you were 15 years old.”
By Helly Kemp (Continued from Issue 93 August 2nd)
A
s we continue our lunch in London’s top French Restaurant in 1977, Arnold Schwarzenegger is sufficiently vain (or professional) to refuse alcohol with his meal and sugar in his coffee. He even goes to the extent of pursuing a dot of cream right around the cup till he has located and exterminated it with the air of destroying vermin. But he is sufficiently un-vain to leave grey hair untinted at his temples in that brownish-blonde thatch, topping the 30-year-old’s head.
But young Arnie, in Thal’s Austrian family flat with a pit toilet, no electricity or running water, always hated the very idea of an ordinary life, and did plan in his childhood dream-world, since the age of 10 to live in America – a lure of freedom, opportunity and absence of the regimented and controlling Austrian way. He moves to London at 19, to California at 21 receiving American citizenship in 1983.
And whatever else this musclebound giant is, he is no dumb blonde, planning every detail of his varied careers over the next four decades after retiring from his bodybuilding championships in 1975: Actor, author, producer, director, narrator, philanthropist, husband to President Kennedy’s niece, Maria Shriver, father of 5 children (one out of wedlock), Governor of California (won’t accept his $175,000 yearly salary), Red Cross Ambassador, Founder R20 Region Of Climate Action to develop a sustainable, low carbon economy and Chairman of the Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy, which he defines as “THE ISSUE OF OUR TIME.”
And after his first major worldwide movie CONAN in 1982 there will be no stopping him, becoming a household name in every single country in the world with TV series, science fiction thrillers, action and comedy movies, including THE TERMINATOR, PREDATOR, TOTAL RECALL, THE 6TH DAY, ERASER, TWINS, my very favourite TRUE LIES and Arnie’s most loved film from some 50 movies he makes: KINDERGARTEN COP. Schwarzenegger will be the biggest movie star in the nineties, and literally within weeks after finishing his seven-year stint as Governor in 2011, will restart his successful movie career. By 2019 Arnie will have 12 million followers on Instagram and over 4 million on Twitter. His films to 2019 will have grossed some $4.5 billion worldwide and his personal wealth is estimated between $400 to $800 million. Do watch out for his latest movie: TERMINATOR DARK FATE, Release November 2019, quite amazing after Arnie’s divorce in 2017, motorbike and skiing accidents this century, emergency open-heart surgery in 2018 and being drop-kick attacked from behind in 2019.

1970’S Shot I don’t normally write much about the future times of my celebrities. But his humanitarian has had such an incredibly diverse life, which he even risked once to save a man from drowning, that I just could not help write about it. But let’s get back to the present, our 1977 London luncheon. Although it’s two years past Schwarzenegger’s bodybuilding days, he keeps exercising a lot, explaining, “Exercising in a way is a kind of yoga and meditation, because you have to concentrate enormously when you exercise. I do more running now than weight training, about 4 miles a day, and weight training four times a week for just an hour. It is so relaxing. You get this peace of mind. All your aggression is gone and your negative energies are released. There are a lot of benefits you did not plan when you were 15 years old.” His tone and those laughing hazel eyes suggest elevation to the moon - or over it – and he has a delightful,

REGULAR FEATURE self-deprecating sense of humour poking fun at himself. He is impossible to dislike. Renaissance societies would have appreciated Schwarzenegger. He is the ‘all-round’ man they considered the ideal, talented both physically and mentally, able to extend himself in any direction but always preserving the perfect balance. Who would believe that beneath that photogenic profile and bulging pectorals beats the heart of an astute businessman? “I’ve always been more interested in business than in anything else,” he declares with total conviction. “All the time I was doing bodybuilding, I was studying international economics and business administration at the U.C.L.A. I have my own mail-order business selling just about anything you can send through the mail: sporting goods, books and brochures on physical fitness, food supplements, vitamins, proteins, magazines. I find it all tying in together. And now that I’m no longer in Mr Olympia, I will produce it for ABC Television as well as the live auditorium. I like
Twins With Danny Devito 1988 to work in many areas at once, and am publishing a book, ARNOLD’S EDUCATION OF THE BODYBUILDER.’ I like to be involved in everything, but basically, it all comes back to just one thing I am interested in: business.”
And women? “I love women, but so many won’t admit that they like me for my body. They will say ‘I like you very much, Arnie because you’re very sweet, very kind, very gentle, but it’s not at all because of your physical development.’ “I like women a little older than myself in their middle to late 30’s. Girls who are young have certain mannerisms like giggling, which I find very irritating. It is hard for me to communicate with very young women. I don’t have a particular kind of girl I like, because I’ve dated so many different types of women:
Kindergarten Cop - His Favourite Movie Of All Time 1990 they have been short, tall, slim, overweight, with black hair, blonde hair, red hair. It might be a sweet face, a sexy one, a kind one – but it’s always the face I look at first. I love girls, sometimes for a one night stand, sometimes for longer. Those I stay with longer always have a sense of humour and intelligence, so there is communication and excitement, not just now, but in a year from now.” Sorry readers, but I’m jumping back to the future again! I absolutely love the reply Arnie will give on a 21st century televised platform when asked about bad sexual behaviour, where he allegedly put his hand up a woman’s skirt. Standing there, casually raising his shoulders up and down, he replies with total sincerity and honesty, “I really can’t remember this incident. But it sounds like me.”

MOVIE REVIEW
UPCOMING BEACHMERE EVENTS
AUGUST EVENTS & ACTIVITIES BEACHMERE
By Chris Connolly
THE PUBLIC “The Public” is a surprisingly timely and inspirational film. The film is written and directed by Emilio Estevez who also stars as its central character, Stuart Goodson. We meet Stuart, at Cincinnati Ohio’s Public Library working as their Managing Librarian. He and his staff, we learn, have adapted to the library being used by many of its patrons for more than their intellectual pursuits. Stuart and his staff impressively manage any resulting disquiet with understanding and acceptance. The film then takes an unexpected turn when Stuart is compelled to make an extraordinary decision. It’s closing time and Cincinnati is suffering its worst night of freezing weather. With the city’s shelters at capacity, a group of patrons with no alternative refuge are represented by fellow patron, Jackson, played compellingly by Michael K Williams. On their behalf, he asks Stuart for refuge rather than risk freezing to death if forced to leave. Allowing the patrons to remain at the library overnight places Stuart not only at odds with his superior and with the city’s District Attorney but also with their entire police force.
Watch the story unfold as the film confronts the viewer with the realities of homelessness and its accompanying complexities. Watch as the film presents the competing interests of those who choose to respond to such issues by exerting force under the guise of law and order in contrast to those who provide understanding and compassion. Although thwarting the opportunity to make erudite proclamations about the complexities of this social issue, Estevez’s Stuart chooses a literary recitation instead and is convincing as the film’s “accidental activist.” The film’s impressive array of support cast includes Christian Slater, the District Attorney; Alec Baldwin, the Negotiator; Jena Malone, a fellow librarian; Jeffrey Wright, their Head Librarian and Taylor Shilling, Stuart’s apartment manager. Estevez chooses an ending that challenges and leaves you, the viewer, to manage.

Make sure you scream at a forest, At a mountain, At the moon. Dance till sweat descends From your mind, And your body becomes the ocean.
If you can stay calm while all around you is chaos, then you probably haven’t completely understood the situation.
Make each sunset yours, By giving them names. For the love in this life, they will make you weep.
Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

I’ve been repeating the same mistakes in life for so long now, I think I’ll start calling them traditions.

SAFETY DAVE’S MESSAGE In recent light of the fire on board the whale watching boat on the Gold Coast, now would be a good time to check your fire extinguisher if you have one on your boat. MSQ Advises: All Queensland regulated ships and boats over 5m in length MUST carry firefighting equipment that can extinguish a fire quickly and effectively. You should buy all firefighting equipment, like fire blankets and extinguishers, from an authorised dealer who can work out the best type for your needs. Fire extinguishers must be serviced by the manufacturer or an authorised agent before the expiry dates. If any firefighting equipment is unusable, you must replace it. A portable fire extinguisher (PFE) which has a manufacture stamp of more than 5 years prior, under Australian Standards must be hydrostatic pressure tested by an approved tester. Due to the cost and time associated with this process most commonly, the PFE would be simply replaced. https://www.msq.qld.gov.au/Safety/Firefightingequipment

in the boat fishing offshore or relaxing around the campsite somewhere in the great outdoors. In the passage, the bream has been thick as with the Caloundra bar area producing big fish and good numbers. We caught over 60 breams for a half a night session on light line. Anchoring up in a nice eddy, berleying up and fishing into the moonrise is the go. We used 1-3kg graphite spin sticks 8lb braid and 1000-2000 size reels. Pilly fillets, mullet and prawns are a good bait choice. Tailor has been on the bite with cooks’ rocks, the passage and ocean beach producing some nice choppers. Head up the northern tip of Bribie and fish the beach in the west south-westerly for big Greenbacks and Jew. It’s a great spot to spend the night fishing up around
REGULAR the bunkers and is a great land-based location. In the passage there’s been some cracker snapper landed with the bridge right the way up to mission point ledge holding fish. People always get shocked at the size and numbers of snapper actually landed throughout the passage. We sat on the mission point ledge one night and landed 10 squire snappers to 60cm. Which we are happy catching in 50m of water 50km offshore, let alone in the river 5 mins away from the ramp. Light lines, fresh big baits and berley are a good way to target the passage snapper. Out on the reefs off Moreton, there have been some quality mixed reefies getting taken. In the bay snapper, kingies, cod and parrot getting caught on the reefs and ledges. The muddies have been almost shut down of late. Although if you know

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours. The inland track is drying out, it is a little powdery in places so take your time. We have seen tracks where people have driven
into restricted areas in the national park. So please stop, as this gives the people who do the right thing a bad name so let’s all do the right thing. The track from Eighth avenue car park to the beach is quite rough about 30 meters from the entrance is really soft so take care. Along the beach at Woorim up
to the third lagoon, is like a roller coaster ride then smooths out all the way to the bunkers. The weather will soon be warming, up this means more campers so looking out for them walking across the beach. There are still some silly people out there doing donuts on the beach, however, if you see this

Asset write off
The inland track can be soft in places
Please ensure that any assets that are to be claimed for immediate write off for the 18/19 year has a purchase date available. Since the rules changed from $20,000 to $25,000 to $30,000 throughout the financial year, the date and time are very important.
Rental properties
Tracks on the beach from 4x4’s
The ATO is doubling the number of audits on claims for rentals. The interest must be allocated between rental and private if the loan was for both uses and capital works must not be claimed as repairs. Incorrect apportionment of expenses for holiday homes are some of the areas being scrutinised. Make sure you have a diary or notation of times spent at the holiday rental as during these periods there are no deductions allowed. If you have recently bought a rental property, a Quantity Surveyors report could provide for property depreciation. If your rental is through an agent, you will receive an Annual Rental Statement summarising the income and expenses. Expenses paid out of private funds such as rates, body corporate and insurance are expenses to claim. Recently purchased property will possibly have adjustments at settlement for water and rates and these are included as expenses. Interest on property loan for 18/19 year can be claimed but not the repayments.

YOUR SAY
Dear Editor,
RANTS & RAVES
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
I was most upset and annoyed that someone had let their dog attack and kill Eric the Emu on Woorim Beach.
Love your magazine The Bribie Islander 1st edition August 2019. I am not a prolific newspaper reader but Love the stories you publish especially those on Bribie history. However, I would like to express my disappointment there being no FIND THE WORD and no MAZE Edition 93. Why is it always Sudoku and Crosswords? Looking forward to your next edition. Hoping Find the Word and Maze find their way back. Thank you. Diane, Bribie Island.
Eric had been a regular visitor to our Anchor Court and seen many a day strolling down Avon avenue and up to the Art Centre strolling around the roundabout there. I am disappointed that some one has not been made accountable; we are privileged to have such wildlife to live amongst. A couple of photos of Eric. Farley, Bribie Island.
I will cut straight to the chase. I have been a Bribie local for 15 yrs. I write a lot of poetry. It is mostly words about what I call > love, life and the pursuit of happiness. I thought you may be able to shoehorn one of my pearls into your mad poet’s section. I still connect with my ex of some 20yrs and I wrote this poem for her 59th birthday. If you think it worthy please feel free to include in your newspaper. Indiana Firestone (See Page 49, This Life)
Dear Editor, Another wonderful issue last Friday - thank you. Carol, Bribie.
Dear Editor, I discovered your delightful magazine while visiting my parents on Bribie and felt I just had to write and add my voice of approval to what a beautiful island community you have.
During my stay, the weather was glorious, the people I met were very friendly and the island itself seems an ideal paradise in which to live. My parents along with everyone else residing on Bribie are very lucky indeed to be living in such a beautiful location.
