BRIBIE’S DINING AND DESTINATION EXPERIENCE

here’s a lot to love about Bribie and if you are a food lover there is certainly a lot to love about -@- THE JETTY, Bribie’s premier dining establishment. While food and service are important it is the overall exceptional dining experience that the

local Bribie owners want customers to enjoy most. “We are local and we want to create something memorable for our local market - but also be a surprise destination for SE Queensland tourism,” says Business Manager Jess Alexander. And what a dining and destination experience -@- THE JETTY offers. As a venue, its unique waterfront position gives

diners stunning, everchanging panoramas over the beautiful Pumicestone Passage and the iconic Bongaree Jetty. However, Jess is quick to point out that while they have an enviable position and a first-class establishment it is the people on her team that make the business such a success and give customers that much sought after memorable experience.
From the moment you are greeted warmly by Tarryn Ransley and her front of house team to the superb culinary delights that are prepared by Head Chef, Jai Freeman and ably assisted by Sous Chef, Nick Bateman you cannot help but wonder if this is one of Queensland’s best-kept dining experience secrets. With a preference of sourcing local suppliers, customers can be assured
that the menu offers the best and freshest regional fare that is seasonally available. And while the ingredients are first class it is the skill and love of food prepared by the chefs that ensure a great dining experience. So we thought you’d like to know more about the chefs who prepare your food experience.
Jai Freeman – Head Chef Well-travelled chef – travelling through Japan, Vietnam then working in London and across England learning everything he could from a range of restaurants including French, Mediterranean, Greek and Italian, and traditional English. Came home and continued to travel and work across Australia including the Whitsundays (1 Hat restaurant), Melbourne and King Island where he has developed a taste for specialising in seafood. He is keen to settle down now and make a name for himself and the restaurant he leads. Jai brings a relaxed leadership style and would rather have a laugh in the kitchen whilst retaining an eye on the attention to detail needed to create memorable menus – modern Australian with a Seafood focus is our food. You can look forward to having new experiences
at your table ranging from aromas to “Fire and Ice”.
Nick Bateman: Sous Chef Nick Bateman has worked in the hospitality industry for the last 16 years. Nick understands the energy, focus and attention to detail required to make a successful business as the original joint owner of La Vera restaurant on Bribie. He brings a coastal relaxed style to the kitchen with his love of seafood, fresh seasonal produce, and creativity including our homemade chocolates (keep an eye out). His love of travel which regularly takes him across Australia and into Asia ensures he brings new flavours and ideas back into our kitchen. Jai and Nick are both homegrown Bribie locals - attending Bribie Island State High School and being apprenticed here on the island. The experience that Jai and Nick bring from industry, together with their regular love of Asian inspired flavours, knowledge of the palate of Bribie Islanders, our greater South East Queensland and our tourism guests, we aim to create something special – a destination coupled with an experience to remember - and be proud to call our own on Bribie.
Weddings, Parties, Anything... The Jetty team are mindful of the fact that when customers want to celebrate an event or milestone they want it to be a memorable affair. “If a customer wants to hold an event we can assist them right from the start,” says Jess. “We can arrange a unique waterfront service under the magnificent Bribie Fig Tree or guide their guests to a private waterfront service on the absolute beachfront.” -@- THE JETTY has three distinct areas within the venue offering their clients the perfect place to share memorable moments with their guests after the service. Details of the venues as follows:
“Our experienced event team led by Tarryn will help you plan your special event with attention to detail, enthusiasm, and the end goal to ensure your day is about YOU, Choose from our delicious set menus, or customise your own, and we will help you match beer, wines and cocktails.” So if you have an event coming up and want to ensure it is a memorable affair contact -@- THE JETTY event reservations and secure your booking.

DINING OUT CAN BE A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE I ssue #95’s cover story on page 2 and 3 about one of Bribie’s most popular waterfront restaurants -@- THE JETTY located just in front of the iconic Scoopy’s Cafe at Bongaree is a timely reminder to us all about the value that can be had from a great out of home dining experience.
flexibility with your kids or grandkids to try new food experiences that they might not try at home. Eating out can also help to build social skills and manners for children. This can be anywhere from interacting with the wait staff, to waiting patiently for the food to come out.
For many of us, even retirees, our lives are extremely busy these days. With everyone caught up on different activities or with work, it can be hard to carve out time to be together, particularly extended families.
And the experience of dining out means that you can build and improve on your own communication skills. The meals you eat at restaurants usually last longer than the ones you have at home. This means conversations last longer as well. This gives you and everyone at the table the chance to work on their conversation skills and learn new things.
Eating out in a restaurant can slow things down for everyone, especially for families with kids being way too distracted by technology at the family dining table. Out of home dining can also become the start of a family tradition. Whether it be a weekly trip to get pizza or a birthday celebration at a fine waterfront restaurant such as -@- THE JETTY.
So if you are looking for the perfect opportunity to bring your family together and start bringing in traditions and making memories with your loved ones why not do yourself a favour and book a dining experience.

ribie Island is fast becoming a new home for many people, some that have visited the island as a tourist and fell in love with the place! Friends or family visiting and appreciating the natural beauty this little haven we call home has to offer.
This is no exception to the new owners of the longestablished Wrights Fruit Barn situated next door to Maccas at Bongaree.
Michael and Kristy Taddio came to Bribie for a 3-week holiday with their children Kayden and Havanna and they too were caught by the Bribie love net! Michael told me “We were gobsmacked by the sheer elegance of the island and the people are so friendly it’s like going back in time.” The original owners Jackie, Jan and Kerry Wright, who started the business back in 1978 would like to congratulate Michael, Kristy, Kayden and Havanna Taddio on the purchase of Wrights Fruit Barn. “After 41 years of business on Bribie Island, the tough decision

wanted bigger, beefier pies so that’s what we gave them,” says Mark, “and we haven’t stopped since!” Beefy’s Pies aren’t just bigger and beefier, they are award-winning. “We’ve been lucky enough to win some awards for our pies over the years – in fact, our awards tally is sitting at 87 and still counting and includes Australia’s Best Gluten-Free Pie.” Beefy’s also received the honour of being awarded Best Meat Pie on the Sunshine Coast as voted by Sunshine Coast locals. “We’re very grateful for all the awards, but it’s the ones where customers have voted that mean the most to us, as do the daily rewards and thanks we receive when customers visit our stores,” adds Mark. Customers were certainly very thankful when Beefy’s
introduced Gluten Free Signature Steak Pies to their range in 2013. It was something Mark decided to do in response to his son Michael being diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and the growing requests that were being received from customers for pies that suited a gluten-free diet. Sunshine Coast locals not only embraced the Beefy’s gluten free-range, as word got out pie lovers from around Australia wanted them too. In 2017, Beefy’s introduced Beefy’s GlutenFree Home Delivery, and now delivers their gluten-free range of pies and sausage rolls Australia wide. So, as the extended Hobbs and Beefy’s families pause to celebrate Beefy’s 22nd birthday, they do it with great anticipation for what the future holds.

Carolyn’s Tax Tips with Carolyn Wheeler CM Wheeler & Associates
TRADESMEN TAX TIP Being a tradesman and using your ABN, you have many different expenses to those working as employees. Income from all contracting invoices must be shown as your contract income. Remember that the contractors you are working for are required to submit the Taxable Payments Report to the ATO, so ensure you have included all those in your income. Your expenses would cover items such as; • Material purchases • Protective clothing • Telephone • Tools of trade (remember the <$20,000 deductible rule?) • Registration fee e.g. BSA • MV expenses including fuel, registration, insurance, repairs and interest on an associated loan. If not claiming 100% business use, then your log book will be required • tolls
INVESTMENTS Investment income statements covering interest received on money invested, dividend statements and share portfolio tax statements are required as they are all part of assessable income. Some of these portfolio statements are not completed until September each year, some even later. If you have these investments it would be wise to wait until you receive the tax statement. Your tax return must include all income from sources in and out of Australia. Expenses relating to any income can be claimed such as share investment guides or membership to an investor newsletter. Remember, the more receipts and data you collect, the higher the possible expenses and maybe even a higher refund. Then if you are in the quarterly instalment system the rate would be adjusted reflecting the newly lodged return. A FITTING TRIBUTE
COMMUNITY
By Neil Wilson
A small group of people recently gathered in the Bibimulya Wetlands to witness the unveiling of a sign erected to announce that the paths which meander through the area have been named as “The John Ward Walk” and, due to John having been heavily involved in both the growing and planting the plants which grow throughout the Wetlands, there could be no more fitting to a man who was dedicated to preserving the local flora.
John Ward was President of the Wallum Action Group which operates the Bribie Community Nursery and, along with his wife Ann, spent many hours collecting seeds and growing plants to ensure that our native plant life continued to flourish. He received recognition for his work when he was announced as a “Queensland champion of the Environment” in 2013. Sadly, John passed away in March 2018 following a short battle with a serious illness and the naming
Ann Ward and daughter Sue unveiled the sign which will ensure that John is permanently remembered for his dedication to conservation of the environment.
Brisbane Sea-Doo & Can-Am
Councillor Brooke Savige and Simone Wilson MP joined with John’s wife and daughter for a photo to commemorate the unveiling. application was submitted to Council as a way of ensuring that there is a permanent and fitting tribute which recognises the work that John did within the local community. As well as members of the Wallum Action Group including his wife (and WAG Treasurer for many years) Ann, the unveiling was attended by John’s daughter Sue who was visiting from England, Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP and Division One Councillor Brooke Savige who, during a short address to those present, mentioned that whilst the work in the Wetlands was one of John’s very first projects, it was but one of the countless tasks that he successfully
achieved as a member of the group. Following the unveiling of the sign by Ann and Sue, Ann and WAG President David Wearne planted a small Callisteman Pachypachyllus behind the sign. Ann said that the seed for this bush had been collected by John and grown by herself at the nursery. When speaking about the lengthy process and final approval for the naming of the “John Ward Walk,” President David paid tribute to former Bribie Islander journalist Neil Wilson for his involvement. ‘I would like to thank Neil for not only submitting the application but also for organising and presenting the unveiling here today,’ said David.

nother great afternoon of music and laughter in the beer garden with three new artists and some surprising performances.
Kiani Jazz was definitely the crowd favourite with her amazing vocal ability, ending her set with a rocking rendition of ‘ Hit the Road Jack’ accompanied by the WhamBam Thankyou Band and Mike Early. It was really good to see Col Shields back onstage again, after a break due to illness, playing up a storm on guitar. Two new performers, Paul Lake and JD Wynn graced the stage and quickly became a hit with the audience. Both artists were well received and will be back on the show next month. Mike Early and the WhamBam Thankyou Band saw out the end of the show with a batch of oldies but goodies, featuring Peter Orr on lead guitar and Paul Lake sitting in on the other guitar. The next Locals Only Show is on the 29th September commencing at 1pm. The Friday night gigs at Blueys are going strong and now that the nights are
REGULAR FEATURE getting warmer, it’ll be the place to be. I was lucky enough to meet one of the Sunday afternoon artists in the beer garden after his performance. His name is Patch Brown and he will be performing on the 8th September from 1pm. A very talented singer/ guitarist and really worth going to see. Blueys have live entertainment every Sunday afternoon and Patch is one of the really entertaining ones. Lately, the Beach Bar and Cafe have been hosting Saturday night entertainment and is fast becoming a very popular venue. Fine food, good coffee and nice surroundings make it a great evening of music with the likes of Mike Early and Billy, Dreadfully Bald, The All Ordinaries Band, Corey Conway appearing regularly. The cafe is
situated in Jacana Avenue in Woorim and open until late. A wonderful place to go and really worth seeing.
Mike and Billy, Mitchell Creek Hayden Kirley has been working hard on his new recording and film clip which will be available soon.

BRIBIE UNITES NATIONS! By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary
A
s avid readers will have gathered from previous media articles, Bribie Rotary takes young Briberians from Bribie High to Canberra each year to participate in a Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). MUNA is a Rotary project designed to create an awareness of the role of the United Nations in mediating international issues. The project comes under Rotary’s Youth and Peace causes. MUNA is actually a United Nations initiative and there are a variety of MUNAs held throughout the world. Bribie Rotary has been doing this now for some years and all of our participants come back the better for their participation. MUNA competitions have been held in many Rotary Districts around
Australia since 1980 and the first National MUNA took place in August 1997. For 74 years Rotary has worked alongside the United Nations to address humanitarian issues around the world. Today, Rotary holds the highest consultative status that the UN offers to nongovernmental organisations. The purpose of MUNA is to encourage young people to learn about other nations and to understand and appreciate the workings of the United Nations (UN). The event provides an excellent setting for students to develop and practice their public speaking skills whilst debating current world issues. The debates, on selected Resolutions, duplicate actual UN

The teams then research their countries history, politics, economics, peoples, international alignment and policies in current world affairs. Then at National MUNA , they debate selected resolutions from each country’s point of view in a simulated United Nations Assembly. As you can imagine, things can get quite heated and participants really do take sides and argue strongly for their position.

WINELANDER A
s readers of these articles will gather I am a fan of French Champagnes and sometimes splash out on a Tattinger, a Mumm, a Charles Heidsieck or even the odd Bollinger if the price is right and it wasn’t long ago descriptions of wines were simple and easy to understand, words such as yeasty aromas tended to be a giveaway to a good Champagne. If you attended a good wine appreciation course the lecturer would often bring in certain spices, fruits and citrus then if the wine was said to have spicy peppery overtones, for example, he would pass around the pepper and you could compare the smell of the wine with the real thing. This is how many of our wine judges and wine writers started to learn the trade and how they can pick out the variety and even the region the wine has come from because 22
the soil and climate in certain regions can impart different characteristics to the wine such as a good quality Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra will have distinctive blackcurrant and minty aromas, a Shiraz from McLaren Vale or The Barossa may have aromas of black or white pepper. If you read my article a couple of issues ago I mentioned that Treasury Wine Estates, the owner of Penfold’s Wines had it in mind to develop some Penfold’s products from The Napa Valley in California to be released in 2022 and a range of Penfold’s Champagnes in collaboration with the Theinot Champagne House of Champagne. The Thienot/Penfold’s Vintage Champagne trio selection is sourced from Grand Cru and Premium Cru vineyards are being released in time for their 175th anniversary

this year, and here are the following tasting notes from winemaker Peter Gago and Des Houghton of the Saturday Courier-Mail on each individual wine. The 2012 Blanc de Noirs (white wine from red grapes such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) RRP $280 has wispy dried fruit fragrances and a nuttiness that leads to a lingering palate of crème anglaise, dried apricot and raspberry. Peter Gago adds there is also a faint suggestion of coffee bean and desirable phenolics that lead to a defined finish with grip and panache. The 2102 Chardonnay Pinot Cuvee RRP $280 has scents of crème brulee, honeysuckle and tobacco leaf with nutty fruit flavours and a bright acidity. However I have noticed recently many winemakers are waxing very lyrical, The Blanc de Blanc (made from
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au Chardonnay) 2012 vintage displays attractive barley sugar, stone fruit and lemon zest citrus fragrances, Peter Gago adds the palate as being linear and defined, with an ethereal, softened and an almost fairy floss caress, he had obviously spent too much time at this year’s Ekka. It certainly is a million miles from the famous Penfold’s Minchinbury ‘Champagne’ which was sold in past for around $3.99 in the 1980’s before the Champagne title was removed from the label and if you have a spare $300 or perhaps a win on The Melbourne Cup in a few weeks this could be just the tonic for you. and available from Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores. A very interesting Pinot Gris is The Ned from New Zealand, the wine is salmon pink which at first glance gave the impression of being a fault, however, this wasn’t the case, it was excellent. This wine was on special from Liquorland at $12 which is $8 off the normal price, if you enjoy peaches you will enjoy this wine as this is the aroma that comes out of the glass straight away. Dan Murphy’s has Hollick 2017 Tannery Block Cabernet Merlot buy one get one free for $22 which is a very good price for a good Coonawarra red. Liquorland has a Saltram B1859 Barossa Shiraz and a Pepperjack Shiraz double buy which also saves around $15 if you are looking for something special, if these specials have finished then keep a lookout as they come around fairly regularly. Raising Grandchildren I
n an ideal world, every child would have a loving environment in which to grow and thrive, built by parents who are capable, available and willing to care for them. Sometimes this is simply not the case, and increasingly grandparents are providing a soft place to land for their grandchildren when their parents are not able to do so. Parenting capacity can be impacted by things like mental health, drug or alcohol abuse, lifestyle and circumstance, or a myriad of other factors. More often than not parents recognise their challenges and willingly call on grandparents to assist with the care of the children. In other situations children are removed and placed in the full time care of the grandparents (or others). Unfortunately at other times grandparents sit on the sidelines worrying about things like: are they safe, are they being fed, will they get to school tomorrow, should I do something? If you find yourself in a situation like this there are steps you can take to support your grandchildren. It could be as simple as short term care from time to time to allow parents an opportunity to rejuvenate, especially during significant life events such as separation and divorce. In some unfortunate circumstances grandparents may need to intervene to protect their grandchildren from potential harm. Often this involves an initial informal discussion regarding your concerns for your grandchildren. If this is unsuccessful mediation may be a good avenue to attempt to resolve the issues with the assistance of a trained third party. Government funded programs also support mediation in this context through agencies such as Relationships Australia. If these approaches are unsuccessful, grandparents can make an application to the court seeking orders in regards to the children’s care arrangements. Naturally this is a last resort and the best outcomes for children are generally achieved by all of the important people in their world working together.

MENTAL HEALTH IN RETIREMENT:
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO STAY HEALTHY AND HAPPY
R
etirement can be exciting –coming to the end of your working career with a calendar now open for relaxation and enjoyment is a time many people look forward to during younger years but the prospect of retirement can also be daunting. Some new retirees worry that their days will have less purpose now that they’re not at work, that they’ll be bored, or that they’ll miss the social connection they had with their co-workers or clients. These concerns are just as legitimate as 24
the excitement of winding up work. Below are some pointers for maintaining mental wellness during retirement and information on why it’s important to proactively look after yourself during this time.
1.
Focus on your physical health: During retirement, you might find there is more time to improve taking care of your body. This is good news because your physical health and your mental wellbeing is connected. The Federal Government’s Head

Explore what gives you purpose: Having purpose is really important for mental wellbeing. It gives you a reason to get up in the morning and makes your days feel meaningful. There are a lot of ways to feel you have a purpose. Just because you’re not going to your day job any more does not mean you can’t have a purpose in your life. You may feel like you have a purpose when you’re engaging in ‘purposeful activities’ which. help you feel like you’re contributing something to the world, whether that contribution is just for you, your family, friends, community or the broader population. What counts as a purposeful activity will be different for everyone. Finding your purpose can be fun! If you’re not sure what gives you purpose now that you’re not at work, try something new and see how it makes you feel. If you’re a member of a social group like Probus, you’ll find that new ideas and activities within your Club may inspire you to find a new purpose and enjoy life.
3.
Connect with the outside world: Connection with others, including your family and friends, a Probus Club,
with pets, or with nature, is a vital part of the human experience. Developing healthy relationships with others can decrease levels of anxiety and depression and improve self-esteem. When you retire from work, you might feel like you’ve lost a lot of connection all at once. Finding ways to connect with others beyond work can be an effective way to promote your mental wellbeing. 4. Consider your sense of safety: Feeling safe, stable and secure is really important for your mental wellbeing. This can include feeling safe at home, in your neighbourhood, feeling financially secure and feeling supported within your close relationships and your community. When you feel safe, it is easier to relax and feel free to live your life as you want. Talk to other retirees about what they’ve done to make their lives safe and secure. 5. Seek support Mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression can affect anyone at any time. It’s important to know that these conditions are health conditions, like catching a cold, it is not a weakness or character flaw. The good news is they can be managed and treated by health professionals. If you’ve been feeling sad, worried, stressed, angry, numb or just ‘not yourself’ for two weeks or more, or if you would like extra support managing your mental wellbeing, speak to your GP about how you’re feeling. Sometimes just telling someone about how you’re feeling is the first step towards feeling better. A READER’S STORY This was possibly due to the fact that Don had told her, that since we were poor, we would have to wait until babies came on special, and this might explain her less than perfect nature. On the other hand, it could have been due to the tick in her head that she had acquired at four weeks. We rang our G.P. as soon as we noticed this, and asked if it was something that was of concern. He suggested we bring her down to his surgery immediately, regardless of the fact, it was 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning.
POSTPARTUM By Elaine Lutton
D
on finally obtained a job with Pioneer Concrete by the simple expedient of calling himself a Materials Technologist. A rose by any other name... This meant we were able to obtain a flat in Annerley just before the baby was due. I was alone when I first went into labour but ran to the corner shop where the lovely Italian shopkeeper rang my husband and suggested he better get home quickly. We had arranged to have the birth at Bootheville Hospital as this was one hospital of only two in Brisbane that allowed fathers at the birth. How things have changed! It was a Salvation Army Hospital and whilst I was labouring upstairs the Salvation Army choir was rehearsing downstairs.
My baby girl, Tamara, was delivered to the strains of YESSSS, (push) Jesus loves you; YESSSSS (push) Jesus loves you” A strange way of showing His affection, but nevertheless I got the giggles along with the midwives. I would not have allowed a new mother to leave the hospital with a kitten with the know-how that I possessed of how to look after a human infant, but never- the- less, a week later, I was on my way home. I won’t go into the details of how I managed, suffice it to say it was not all plain sailing, and that I was very grateful for the help of my mother-in-law Elvie. Six weeks later we were back at Bribie and showing off our offspring. The three-yearold who lived next door was not overly impressed. She gave Tamara a quick I.Q. test at the end of which she shook her head sadly, and told us our infant did not know her colours yet!
I suspect his experience with ticks in infant’s heads was somewhat limited. He told us to hold her down whilst he injected her scalp with an anaesthetic. He followed this up by using a scalpel to cut out the offending beastie which was put into a kidney bowl. Tamara did not appreciate his ministrations. Blood poured everywhere accompanied by piercing screams. Then it was time to look for the tick which had meanwhile done a disappearing act. This panicked the doctor, who kept saying that it must be found. He could not have a live tick running around his surgery! Eventually, the tick was discovered, racing around the underside of the lip of the kidney dish, and promptly squashed. The doctor did not consider the beastie a sentient being. Four months later or so I began to feel familiar symptoms and without wishing to alarm Don I took myself to the Tick Doctor. He confirmed my suspicions. Yes, I was pregnant again. The doctor was very kind and asked how I felt about this pregnancy. Relief flooded his face when I said that both my husband and I would be delighted.
I suspect that back in the UK my parents would be muttering about what can you expect when she insists on marrying a Catholic? The day before Tamara turned one, I gave birth to a baby boy, Simon, thus achieving my pigeon pair. Don visited me the next day, bringing Tamara with him, and gravely saying to her, “Look, what you’ve got for your First Birthday.” Since that day they have been as close as it is possible for a brother and sister to be. On the other hand, Don and I worked out what was causing it, and there were no more pregnancies. The two-year-old boy from next door gazed at Simon, sighed, but hoped he would improve as a friend with the passing of time. This was indeed the case, being each other’s best man at their respective weddings. Simon looked upon Tamara as an extra mother. We lost both of them when she took it into her head to take him for a lengthy walk to show him the big boats without telling us first. On the other hand, we were grateful when Simon told us that, although Tamara had made him promise not to tell us about the huge oyster cut in her foot, he said, “I think you ought to know”. We taught them to dig yabbies’, use a hand line and rods to catch fish, start the motor of the tinnie we had acquired, swim, and surf. They both joined Nippers and with the boys we fostered became members of the “Jetty Rats”, a group of youngsters who hung out together. They will know who they are. I was touched when my son, whilst giving his Father’s Eulogy, said we had provided them with an idyllic childhood.

LASER TATTOO REMOVAL -
IS IT FOR YOU? By Kerrie Goodwin
D
o you have a tattoo that you’ve considered removing? Is there someone in your life that you’ve nagged to go get their horrible tattoo removed? Have you seen ads around the place for Laser Tattoo Removal, and wondered about how effective it is and if it’s true that it doesn’t even hurt that much with the super excellent technology these days? I mean we’re about launch commercial flights into space, surely we can fix our skin of a bit of poorly chosen ink right? Well, get comfortable with a tea and I’ll tell you all about
30
my experience with Laser Tattoo Removal in 2019.
If you can’t be bothered reading all of this, I’ll give you the Cliffs Notes version now – it’s very painful. It’s very expensive. And it might just take a couple of years. I won’t go into too much detail about the tattoo that I want to remove, other than to say that it’s about the size of my hand. It’s only about seven years old, and I wanted it gone pretty much right after I got it. I know I’m not the only idiot who’s felt like that (the very long line at the Laser Clinic is all the proof I need that I have a lot of dumb friends in this regard). Let’s just say that “draw something kinda like this but make it look awesome!” isn’t really a clear instruction to an artist. I can see where I went wrong now. But, I didn’t really know what I wanted at the time so I got something that I didn’t really want. Serves me right; I made my bed and I’m lying in it.

The Bribie Islander
Anyway. Enough about my poor choices. I had a consultation with a very respected and awardwinning tattoo artist to discuss cover-up options, and he told me straight up that it’s simply too dark and too big, and any cover-up would not work until it was basically just a big black rectangle. He suggested I go have a few laser tattoo removal sessions to lighten it up, and then come back and talk cover-up options.
So I thought, ok, he’s the expert. I’ll give it a go. I watched a lot of videos and looked at lots of scary pictures. The place I decided on had videos of the guy lasering himself for god’s sake. How bad could it be? I made an appointment. I get there and sign the standard ‘If I’m horribly maimed/die it’s not your fault’ form. I go down the hall. I go into the room. I was a little disturbed by the doctor’s table with the clinical green plastic covering and absorbent rectangle section, which I can only assume is there to
catch the blood. I lie down. He cools the area with cold air for a bit (picture a reverse vacuum – this is supposed to help with the burning sensation..lies!), then tells me he’s about to start and to tell him to stop at any time. I suck it up and give him a tough nod to go ahead like the bad-ass I’m pretending to be. I read beforehand that it feels like a rubber band snapping against your skin. Yes, I’d agree with that - if the rubber band we’re talking about is 10 centimetres thick, covered in barbed wire and stretched out the door and down the hall before being flung at your bare hide, and oh also the rubber band is on FIRE. And that happens again and again and again and again and again and again in very quick succession until every inch of your tattoo has been ‘snapped’. I didn’t tell him to stop, but I definitely stopped breathing during it and there was a decent amount of internal screaming going on. At least I think it was internal. It was over in probably 40 seconds, but when you’re being burnt, 40 seconds feels plenty damn long. As soon as it was over I took a huge shuddering gulp of air and he goes to me, “How was it? Pretty brutal hey!”.
I just lay rigid for a bit before squeaking ‘yep!’ which came out more like ‘eeeeeeep!’ much higher than I meant to. So much for being a bad-ass. He told me that he’d effectively just burnt me, and as such my tattoo would act like a burn for the next week or so while it healed. Itching, swelling, blistering etc would all be normal. Goody. So I stumbled out of there, stumbled home, and stumbled into a corner to sulk and consider what I’m doing to myself. Not only was I feeling very sore and abused, but I was $200 poorer for it. My tattoo was swollen, a little weepy, and looking rather bloodshot. It took me about 6 months to get the guts to make another appointment. You know how you build up a bad experience in your mind, and it’s not actually that bad when you go to do it again? Well, this isn’t like that. The next time was
somehow even worse. Now I’m no chicken. Women are generally pretty tough with higher pain thresholds than men (come on, it’s true, you all know it). But I’m telling you – I’m hanging on by my fingernails through this process. My tattoo is on my ribs, which apparently is one of the most painful parts on the body to get a tattoo or remove one. Yay for me. Considering that I’ve been told that I’d need at least 8 sessions at $200 a pop, I’m not sure what’s worse – the cost or the pain (actually that’s a lie, it’s definitely the pain). And on top of that, it’s not even a quick fix. You need to wait at least 8 weeks between appointments, meaning I’ve got around a year and a half of this to go and $1,600 to pay to remove a thing that cost about $120. At my last session, I was told about a girl who waited 3 years between her first and
second session because she hated it that much. I’ve had four sessions so far, and I’m certain I’ll need more than 8 sessions in total. I’m managing the pain by chanting to myself during my sessions ‘I AM A WARRIOR!!!’. Hey, whatever works. And lots of people live with a lot of pain every day; I’ve got nothing to complain about. I’m committed to this course now, and I want this tattoo gone. And yes, I still love tattoos and want another one. I just don’t want that one. You will need to decide for yourself if Laser Tattoo removal is for you. Depending on where your tattoo is and how faded it is already, your experience may be cheaper and less painful than mine. I’ve been to two different clinics and have found them both excellent and very caring. You should be able to send a photo of
your tattoo to any clinic and they’ll give you a quote without having to make an appointment. However, I will leave you with this - a parting gift. I haven’t told you the most horrific part of the process.
The smell. During the session, there is a wrongness that assaults you…a smell…and a creeping horror as you realise you’re smelling your own burning skin. What’s it smell like, you wonder? You know when you’re at the sushi train and you get them to make you a fresh seared salmon nigiri? They get the raw salmon and blast the top of it with a tiny flame thrower and it goes a little black but the rest is still pink, and as you eat it you get that seared flesh smell in your nose? It’s just like that, only 87% less delicious and 120% more horrifying.

LITTLE FRIARBIRD –
NATURE
PHILEMON CITREOGULARIS
By Marj Webber
I
n recent years Little Friarbirds have become more common on Bribie Island in open forests, heathlands, parks and gardens. Little Friarbirds are the smallest of the 4 species of Australian Friarbirds being only 25-30 cm in length and weighing 50-80 g. They are quite boisterous but have a more musical voice than the Noisy Friarbird which is the only other Friarbird species we are likely to see in our area. There are several features which makes it easy to distinguish
them from Noisy Friarbirds. Their facial skin is blue, upper parts of the body are brown-grey and their underparts are pale. Unlike the Noisy Friarbird they have no bump on their beaks and eyes are brown while the Noisy Friarbird’s eyes are red. Males and females are similar in appearance with the male being a little larger. They are more widespread than the Noisy Friarbird being found in most of Queensland, NSW and Victoria as well in the north of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. They are likely to be found
anywhere in these areas where there are flowering trees and water. While feeding alone, in pairs or in small flocks they can be quite aggressive towards other birds often chasing them away. They are honeyeaters and form nomadic flocks and fly to places where there are flowering trees seeking the pollen and nectar. Insects which are sought in the outer foliage and often caught on the wing are also on the menu. Little Friarbirds bathe and drink every day. Breeding is usually carried out by monogamous pairs

in the months between July and March. Cuplike nests of stripped bark, grass and leaves are built nearly always close to water. Nests are built by both parents then clutches of 2-3 pinkish eggs are laid and incubated by the female for about 13 days. Both parents feed and defend their nests from predators. Common Koels are Cuckoos which arrive in our area from PNG in about October and often use the Friarbirds nests to lay their eggs after destroying any existing eggs. Other threats are Magpies, Crows, Raptors, Reptiles and Cats taking eggs and babies. Eating insects that have been poisoned by insecticides can also have a drastic effect. Little Friarbirds sometimes known as Little Leatherheads have adapted well to human habitation and frequent the many native flowering trees which have been planted in our parks and gardens. For now, their conservation status is secure.

Could a change in lifestyle and diet reduce your pain? Did you know that one in five Australians live with chronic pain, this includes teenagers and children? Pain is the most common reason that people seek medical help. Pain remains one of the most misunderstood areas of health care. Could lifestyle and diet be the main contributing factor. How can your diet influence your pain levels?
W
hen you feel pain, it can be increased or decreased by the foods that you put into your body. Omega 3 fatty acids can greatly help to reduce inflammation in the body. This is where food as medicine can work its wonders. Foods high in Omega 3 fatty acids include; wild caught fish such as salmon, pumpkin seeds, almonds, hemp seeds and hemp seed oil, walnuts and sesame seeds. The quality of foods that contain these omega 3 fatty acids is also important. You see oils and nuts can oxidize and turn rancid if they are not fresh. These oils that have become rancid are actually inflammatory to the body. As a Naturopath I love to use food
as medicine as well as the power of herbs for chronic pain. One of the first ones that come to mind is Turmeric. Turmeric is one of the most extensively researched herbs and has been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurveda medicine. Recent studies show that the active component in Turmeric – Curcumin – was found to be more effective for pain than Ibuprofen. Dosing for turmeric depends on a person’s individual situation. The dose is different for someone who suffers with arthritis as opposed to someone who is suffering with post-surgical pain. Unfortunately, regardless of the cause, the reality for many chronic pain sufferers is that they also experience psychological distress sometimes in the form of anxiety and depression. Serotonin the happy hormone is highly involved in signaling pain in the body.

This feeds back to the psychological distress, as low serotonin levels equally lower pain tolerance. Essentially when your serotonin levels are low you will feel pain more. With continual high stress comes a surge in stress hormones. Part of this stress can cause you to hold muscular tension and the long-term effect of this can be pain. Therefore, is would be beneficial to deal with any stress or lifestyle factors that could be affecting your serotonin levels. When addressing persistent pain, I believe it is crucial to work with a team of practitioners reviewing all areas of pain rather than simply addressing the symptoms. Here at Bribie Family Naturopath Clinic we can work alongside with your GP to find the best outcome for you. Sheridan.

Prostate enlargement - Natural remedy ProstaLobium
M
any people who visit the health shop try to find natural remedies for their problems instead of relying on the medication, as often the side effects of taking medications cause many other problems and sometimes the side effects are worse than the actual problem. Some time ago a man came and searched for natural remedies for his prostate problem. He wanted to fix the problem before he saw a doctor and he didn’t want to take medication for his problem. His prostate was inflamed and he was in so much pain. I suggested ProstaLobium and the result was wonderful and he couldn’t thank me enough for suggesting ProstaLobium to him. The testimonial video is available on Bribie Simply Healthy Facebook page. The main ingredient of ProstaLobium is a herb called Epilobium, this herb seems to be working well with prostate problems. ‘The prostate gland is found in men only around the urethra at the point where the urethra exits the bladder. The prostate produces the seminal fluid that facilitates the ejaculation of sperm and, for reasons that seemed to have escaped everyone, the prostate begins to act up in men past the age of
50. It enlarges and presses against the urethra causing men to feel the urge to urinate. But when they make the trip to the toilet all they can manage is a few drops and, within a very short while, the urge to urinate returns. As you can imagine, such a condition would be considered intolerable, but it is much more than just uncomfortable, because after prostate enlargement (the simple form of prostate disorder), comes prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and then prostate cancer, which can prove fatal. While the primary function of Epilobium is as a Prostatelium, the fact is that it is good for a variety of urinary tract infections – in men and women.
About 20 odd years ago when she was reversing her vehicle down her driveway she heard a massive scream and instantly she thought she might have run over her young daughter who was playing nearby. Even though she could see her daughter, looking at her laughing standing next to her car, she was still in shock. She said it took her awhile to realize that she didn’t run over her daughter. Ever since that incident
she slowly started to have panic attacks whenever she is in the car and it has worsened to the point that she couldn’t drive anymore. After the EFT session with me, she actually drove her car home. Her trauma was released.

Often, when we are trying to “measure up” to something or someone, the measuring stick we are using just is not realistic.
Try to avoid “should” thinking. Telling yourself that you should be a certain way, achieve a certain goal, have certain things, can set you up for failure. Usually, if you are thinking “should” thoughts, they are not truly self-directed goals and values but instead have been given to you by someone else. Valuing yourself means valuing the inner compass that tells you what is important to you. Celebrate the things you are good at - even the small accomplishments. Try to avoid looking down on yourself, instead, talk positively about yourself as if you were talking to someone that you care deeply about.
When you talk to others, you often value them above yourself are less likely to say something to upset them. By talking to yourself the same way, you will be less likely to use thoughts or words that bring you down. Be realistic about your limits; if you are feeling overwhelmed, lower your expectations a little. Taking supportive actions for yourself is not failing, it is merely giving yourself a chance to be successful in the long run. When you have reached a goal, celebrate it. Acknowledge compliments. Recognize that one thing you “should” do is treat yourself with care (https:// www.psychologytoday.com) “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles…but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly” Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, The Teaching of Buddha. n Sunday 22nd September the Bribie Island Orchestra is giving a concert of popular music from Verdi to Joplin - from Dvorak to Offenbach with guest artists the Dexterous Digits Duo. The Spring Concert will be held at the Bribie Island Retirement Village Hall, Foley Street and will commence at 6:30 pm. Special guest artists Dexterous Digits Duo comprises the talents of Cassandra D’Arcy on mandolin and violin and James Lloyd on classical guitar. The pair met while playing in the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra where Cassandra plays the cello and James plays guitar and percussion instruments. Both artists are teachers Cassandra at her Dexterous
Digits Music School, teaching all the stringed instruments, whereas James has directed the Brisbane Spanish Guitar Centre since 1976. Casandra also plays in the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra and with the Bribie Island Orchestra, founded and conducted by her father, Martin White. James has an interest in arranging music for guitar groups and ensembles and this has led to the formation of the Dexterous Digits Duo as a vehicle for exploring music of all styles and periods. We will be welcoming back our two expert trumpeters Ruth and Jennifer Grant for this concert and they will ensure that you toe-tap along and if you don’t feel like getting up to do the Can Can it will be because you can’t can’t.

hen I retired to the peace and quiet of Bribie Island, after a worldwide career as a Project Management Consultant, I had no idea how my life would be changed. I had lived and worked for over 40 years on projects in Libya, Denmark, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and more recently on the Sydney Olympic Games and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

As a member of Rotary International, I had organised a huge fundraising walk through the new Sydney Harbour Tunnel. On moving to Bribie in 2003 I noted that it was the 40th Anniversary of the Bribie Bridge, so I organised a Bridge walk as my first fundraiser for Bribie Rotary. With absolutely no knowledge or interest in Bribie Island history this simple event launched me into an amazing retirement hobby. I happened to meet a delightful old lady who had been involved in the opening celebrations for the Bribie Bridge on 19th October 1963. I had travelled around the world more than 50 times and lived in 20 different countries. She had lived on Bribie Island for almost 60 years, and the furthest she had been in her entire life was to Bundaberg to a wedding for a day. We were two totally different people, but we made a great connection with each other. This remarkable old lady, Stella Ray, sparked my interest in the fascinating history of this unique island, and helped me to interview many old-timers, and appreciate how remarkable life on Bribie was long ago. Stella had lived a challenging life of hard work with little reward. She worked in many of the cafes, fish 50

shops and take always on Bribie from 1950 to 1980, serving residents and visitors, listening to their stories and gossip, and had some remarkable stories to tell. She died at the age of 95 in 2014 having lived on the same small block of land in Bongaree for 70 years. My subsequent 14 years fascination with Bribie History is all due to meeting her.
Showcase Bribie History When I became interested there were few books or information telling any historical stories of this small island, so I set about gaining knowledge, raising awareness and interest. Over the next few years, I had plaques and signage installed around Bongaree to provide interesting historical insights for residents and visitors. I had informative brochures printed and made available free, commemorative plaques installed at Ian Fairweather Park and Coungeau House, and worked with the late Warwick Outram as he produced numerous books and started me teaching local history at U3A. I did record interviews with over 140 long term residents, many of whom showed me old photos and documents going back more than 100 years I was surprised and delighted to learn some of the fascinating histories of this small island. Not simply in terms of the History of Queensland, but the

Barry Clark, Graham Mills, Donna Holmes and Lynne Hooper, all of whom have made significant contributions to the growth and achievements of the Society. All continued to serve on Committees in various roles over many years, and a tribute was paid to the outgoing 2018/19 Committee at the AGM.
2018-2019 Committee At the recent Annual General Meeting, Shauna Hicks was nominated and elected as the new President for 2019/20. Shauna had been on the Committee previously, but her many other interests in History and Genealogy had kept her busy in recent years. Shauna Hicks has a long association with the area’s history and moved to live here in 2012. Her great great great grandparents settled at Toorbul 150 years ago in the 1870s. Shauna has a 40-year interest in local and family history and worked in government libraries and archives in Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne. Since retiring, she has written 11 family history guides and is a regular speaker at genealogy cruises, conferences and seminars. She now operates her part-time research and consultancy business. Shauna currently tutors two Bribie Island U3A courses - Advanced Family History
and Writing Family History, and is co-convenor of the Bribie Island Library DNA for Genealogists Group which meets monthly.

and Ellen Beechey as Treasurer. Remaining on the Committee are former Presidents Graham Mills, Barry Clark and Donna Holmes, together with Viv Tucker from Deception Bay who has extended the range and connections to local History. Over the last 10 years, Bribie Island Historical Society has visited and hosted many other Historical Groups in the area including Peachester, Redcliffe, Woodford, Buderim, Windsor, Caboolture, Deception Bay, Dayboro, Landsborough and Pine Rivers, together with history exhibits at Miegunyah, Bankfoot House and Maritime Museum.
Some special History moments
BIHS Committee 2019-20 very special occasion as her niece is a teacher on Bribie, and several of her School children sang her “Happy Birthday”. In July 2019 May Newton celebrated her 100th Birthday at her home in Tewantin, but was unfortunately too frail to consider another trip to Bribie. Another special moment for me was to recognize the huge contribution that Warwick Outram had made to Bribie Island over more than 30 years of writing and self-publishing more than 30 books about the island’s history and its people. It was a great pleasure to invite Warwick to be the inaugural Patron of the Society.
The Historical Society has organized and hosted many special functions over the last 10 years to commemorate key events in Bribie’s past. A couple are worth remembering in this article.
Graham Mills & Lynne Hooper Also joining the Committee is Trevor Sutton who has recently moved to live on Bribie, but has a long family connection with the Island. He is related to the Moyle family who ran the Guest House and Restaurant by the Jetty at Bribie back in the 1920s. Former President Lynne Hooper will continue as Secretary

Members brought along props, deflectors and diffusers which were used while each member had their portraits taken on the boardwalk making use of the attractive background. Alain brought along his crystal ball and several people had fun taking photos through this.

hotographer Jennifere Thompson’s role models are natural historian David Attenborough, anthropologist Jane Goodall and primatologist Dian Fossey. Because, like these
famous conservationists, her burden is for creatures such as orangutans of Borneo, Rwandan mountain gorillas, African chimpanzees and Asian sun bears. Jennifere has the enviable task of flying off to these places to photograph her animal friends in zoos, enclosures, sanctuaries and the wild. The photos are then turned into works of art for the altruistic purpose of drawing our attention to the plight of these critically endangered species. Jennifere specializes in wild animal portraiture with a distinctive style. Her predominantly black and white photographs are devoid of backgrounds and use dark space to highlight her subjects. Viewers are therefore able to become intimately involved with an animal’s facial features and behaviour. In addition,

Orangutan by studying the creatures’ faces, Jennifere is often able to predict the animals’ movements and behaviour when in their habitats. Initially naming her project ICU at the Zoo, this changed to ICU Too with Jennifere’s desire to introduce her audience to animals living in the wild. By doing so she hoped to promote a deeper connection between viewer and subject. In 2015 therefore, our adventurous photographer embarked upon a trip to Africa during the worst Ebola outbreak in history. By then this virulent disease had taken 11,000 Africans, with more dying daily. But the rewards of Jennifere’s courageous journey outshone the enormous risks when she

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
FIGHT OF A MICROCELEBRITY this issue, when it hits me that we are near the end of the 2019 Australian flu season, with six times more people affected than in 2018, when the global death rate was in excess of 79,000. No total 2019 figures have as yet been released. By Helly Kemp
F
irst of all, let me apologize for calling myself a micro-celebrity. But as I write ‘HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY,’ the above title is the only excuse I can think of for featuring today’s gross topic. Besides, in last year’s article John Nettles of ‘MIDSOMER MURDERS’ TV Series, calling himself a MINICELEBRITY, amused me, and I figured reducing that above title by some 1000 digits, might let me get away with micro-CELEBRITY. (Please notice the ‘micro’ in lower case to diminish it further!) So here I am just starting to write about the beautiful Joan Collins for
Contented that my April 2019 trivalent (or maybe quadrivalent) flu vaccine is active in my body, I’m totally relaxed, but feel sad for all the people in the world who decided against the vaccine or could not afford it overseas.
Above: Volcano-like lava streams Left: Flu virus under microscope don’t really think about the above and say, “Oh, it’s just a cold.” You buy some cold and flu tabs, antihistamines, anesthetic throat lozenges and enjoy the hot milk with honey or a drop of scotch your loving husband brings you. But your condition does not improve and worsens over the next fortnight. Within a day or two things already change. Added little pleasures arrive: you feel nauseous and dizzy, chilled one minute and overheated the next. And when your muscles and joints ache more than usual and you’re continuously overtired and get headaches which you never normally have, it finally rips you out of that lulling security dream world, believing that this is just a cold.
Only once in the 1990’s did John and I have a bad flu, keeping both of us in bed for several days. And only once in 2009 in the swine flu season did we make the decision not to have the vaccine, when we discovered that Germany distributed two different flu vaccines: one for the populace, one for the government and army. If that does not tell a story nothing will! Fully aware that a flu vaccine is not 100% protection, as each year only the most dangerous and most prevalent viruses of that particular season will be covered, you seem to forget about it until a different flu virus comes and gets you. And when it gets you, it gets you! So, having a runny and blocked nose and sore throat this August, you

REGULAR FEATURE You stay in bed for a day, totally pampered by your husband. Now your eyes don’t stop watering and your ears are painfully pulsating in rhythm with each heartbeat. While lying in bed, and being so weak, when you squeeze the hard-plastic eye drop bottle, you accidentally squeeze too hard and a waterfall of dry eye syndrome drops fills your ears. And if you sit up and aren’t quick enough to put your little cotton wool ball in your ear when inserting your Auralgan ear drops, you have the pleasure of ending up with a wet and somewhat oily neck. But after a day in bed, the inner rebel does stir. You shake your head decisively and proclaim, “I’m not giving in to this!” So up you get, into the home office and you stop feeling sorry for yourself. This time, overenthusiastically using those eye drops again, they’re running down your cheek and it’s definitely advisable to have your mouth shut. But the major problem is controlling both runny and much-blocked nose. Yes, but just think of how much money you can save by using the softest, 3 ply toilet tissue instead of conventional tissue: As 3 full rolls of paper are needed daily, you buy a 24 family pack for $7.99, each roll containing 190, 11 cm x 10 x cm
Above: Influenza Virus sheets @ 4.2 cents, so you use 570 sheets daily, two at a time. And as you can see, a six-hour office stint fills a complete paper basket. The calibre of the coloured tip of your very sore nose competes successfully with Rudolph’s, The Red-Nosed Reindeer, while your inflamed eyes map a crisscross pattern of volcano lava streams. So, in spite of trying to be brave, you are actually quite helpless, like swimming in the backpackers’ Bondi rift, pushed further and further out to sea. And it takes your dim-witted brain well over a week to see your G.P. by which time it’s too late for proper flu virus ID and all the lovely Dr Blanco can do is prescribe a mild antibiotic, shortly to be increased to a stronger one. But then you have a brilliant thought: why not cut a little sheet of those tissues in half, roll it into two tubes and push them gently into the nostrils to avert the pain of hundreds of daily blows and nose bleeds. Done! What a short-term relief!
Good morning Walrus
And when your home office window faces the courtyard and you’re clicking
the keyboard writing this feature, you’re somewhat unaware of your surroundings until your regular courier arrives, knocking on the windowpane, greeting you, “Good Morning, Walrus.” So you decide to conclude this episode with part of Lewis Carroll’s famous poem, Through The Looking Glass, also used in the Alice in Wonderland movie: ‘The time has come,’ the Walrus said, ‘To talk of many things: Of shoes — and ships — and sealingwax — Of cabbages — and kings — And why the sea is boiling hot — And whether pigs have wings.’ P.S. The missed Joan Collins feature will appear in the next issue.

MOVIE REVIEW
UPCOMING BEACHMERE EVENTS
SEPTEMBER EVENTS & ACTIVITIES BEACHMERE
By Chris Connolly
THE KEEPER
“The Keeper” is based on a true story and is a multilayered coproduction of both Germany and Northern Ireland. On the surface, the film tells a story about the sporting prowess of Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Bernhard Trautmann (known as “Bert”) during the postWWII era. Bert, played by David Kross, was a German war prisoner interned in Lancashire, England where the film’s real story begins. Although a POW, Bert’s exceptional goalkeeping ability is discovered by the local soccer team manager, Jack Friar, played so very well by John Henshaw. Bert is soon noticed by the English Football League and signed for Manchester City’s First Division. Positioning Bert as their goalkeeper, the film highlights the team’s 1956 FA Cup win -a victory strongly attributed to Bert’s unwavering skill despite the risks posed to his health and future during the game. The film’s backstory, however, is about so much more. It is a film about the unifying force of competitive sport as opposed to the contagion of hatred and rejection. It is a film about the depths of grief carried
by the friends and families of wartime casualties. It is a film about the enduring love between Bert and his bride, Margaret, played by Freya Mavor. Most powerfully, it is a film about the power of forgiveness. Although there are a series of flashbacks woven into the storyline, scant detail is provided about Bert’s early years or about whether he recognised the atrocities of the Nazi regime during his war service as a Luftwaffe paratrooper. Despite this, the film delivers a moving version of Bernhard Trautmann’s multilayered story and is well worth watching. Be sure to stay until all the credits roll to catch a glimpse of the real Bernhard Trautmann.

Moreton Road Safety Week
Sgt Sarah Grayson on Aug 26, 2019 @ 3:11pm A united front… today saw the emergency services standing strongly together to launch Queensland Road Safety Week. Local police and emergency services gathered at the BP Service Station on the M1 North Bound to officially launch Queensland Road Safety Week in Moreton. QPS Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit, QPS Road Policing, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Ambulance Service, State Emergency Service and the Coast Guard were all in attendance. Together, we are all asking all motorists and those using our Queensland roads in any way, to make road safety a priority. A special thanks to the wonderful team at the BP for looking after everyone and giving out free coffee to members of the community who were keen to support Queensland Road Safety Week. Thank you to all who came along, we look forward to seeing more community members throughout the week as well all make road safety our priority. YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FOR SEPTEMBER By Oscar Cainer
VIRGO (August 24 September 23) You and I are complex creatures full of contradictory ideas and feelings. While we love innovation, we’re also creatures of habit who value our traditions. Although we treasure individuality, we also love commitment. Without this confusing medley of emotions, life would be very dull. So, just because something you’re tempted to embark on doesn’t seem to make much sense doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do it. Starting September with Mercury, Venus and the Sun in Virgo, you need to make room for fun and spontaneity too! Take advantage of September’s exciting cosmic climate. Call 1900 959 005. Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. There’s adventure in the air as the month of September begins with a ‘Stellium’, a cluster of planets, forming in Virgo. This forms one point of a magnificent Grand Trine - a 62

REGULAR FEATURE powerful source of support that will enable us to explore any challenges that come our way. A series of Neptunian oppositions will provide some of those; but, armed with cosmic enthusiasm, creativity and determination, we can find practical ways to harness this energy and find ourselves sailing into the Equinox with style. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) You’ve learned a great deal recently about the value of your friendships and what works best for you in life. As you enter into September, a time in which new projects are possible, you’re making new discoveries – all of which can be of great benefit. You’ve been considering making a significant change to the way you conduct your day-to-day life, but have found yourself hesitating in an uncharacteristic way. Any doubts are about to be replaced by a certainty that will make the month surprisingly pleasing. September holds great potential for positive change. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Although it might feel as if doing nothing gets you nowhere, there are times when it’s the best option. Sometimes, we intervene in situations that are best left to run their natural course, and interrupt a natural process; getting in the way of forces that ultimately have our best interests at heart. Whilst it’s true that you may need to take action eventually, for the moment, your wisest move is to leave things as they are. Let the dust settle. When you know what you need to do, you’ll have the tools necessary to achieve it. Find out how to make this a month to remember! Call 1900 959 005. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) There’s something delightful about ‘feeling at home’. As we enter September, astrological forces encourage you to consider the whole planet as a place where you feel comfortable. In order to maximise the effects of a kindly sky, your ideas about life need to be even more open than usual; then, you’ll be able to act with more freedom. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, you’ll find your vision becomes clearer as the month progresses. Then, as you appreciate your life, you’ll find more reasons to be grateful. Your powerful prediction for September is ready. Call 1900 959 005.

CANCER (June 23 - July 23) September offers you the potential to make several important realisations. The work you’ve recently done on yourself has altered the impact of an emotive situation so that what once felt like a big obstacle is now almost paper-thin. As the month progresses you’ll see your way towards achieving something that once seemed impossible. These are powerful times for you; so use your influence with wisdom. If you take hold of each opportunity with care, you’ll make progress and find happiness in the process. Your September forecast will be very rewarding. Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) The last thing we want to hear in the midst of a stressful situation is someone telling us to ‘take it easy’. It’s not an easy thing to do! The more we feel as if we ‘should’ be doing it, the harder it becomes and the more stressed we feel. Yet, you don’t want to be taking it too easy this month. Not when September brings you the energy to achieve so much. Being busy and being under pressure are very different experiences. As long as you’re enjoying responding to life’s challenges, keep going. All is going to be well. For great news on the exciting opportunities in September, call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) This can be a tense time of year for you. With your birthday looming on the horizon, it’s tempting to look back and judge yourself and your decisions. Fortunately, you’ll be in a state of mind where you can suddenly see ways to fix persistent problems. You may even discover the way out of a situation that has seemed to have backed you up against a wall. Rather than causing stress, you may even find yourself enjoying the process of making a life-changing choice or two! Enjoy the clarity that September brings. A new month! A forecast that could transform your life! Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) ‘We interrupt this astrological forecast with an announcement. The month of August is being prolonged. A unilateral agreement has been reached across the globe in which
all of it’s inhabitants are invited to sit back and take it easy for a couple of weeks. Although this will obviously affect those people who are expecting to carry on as usual… etc.’ Sadly, there’s no chance of such an amazing decree being announced. Neverthless, September brings you plenty of chances to relax and enjoy yourself. Don’t miss them! September is due to be amazing! For four minutes of news, call 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 December 21) The heavier the load you’re carrying, the more likely you are to drop something. No wonder some folk choose to live their lives carrying very little. If they have empty hands, there’s no chance of them letting an opportunity slip through their fingers. Every time you pick up a project or run with an idea, you take a risk. Yet you’re not able to sit back and watch other people struggle. Although you don’t want to take needless action this month, you don’t want to miss the opportunity that arises either. So be
decisive in all that you do. For encouraging news about what September, call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) One of the good things about feeling as if other people are talking about you is that you don’t have to pay attention to what they’re saying. That’s not to suggest you need to be concerned about anyone’s opinions. In fact, the more you’re able to banish any worries about what other people might be saying, and focus on what’s important to you, the more successful the month will be. Don’t allow yourself to become overly serious either. With a subtle change of attitude you can both deepen an emotional bond and overcome a fear. There’s so much to tell you about September! Call 1900 959 005. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Just as the oceans are filled with water, and the skies are filled with air, the minds of human beings are filled with ideas and opinions. It seems that we find it easy to focus on what’s wrong with our planet rather than what’s right. Yet just as we can’t
swim in the sky, or fly in the sea, there’s nothing to be gained from such negativity. Watch out, this month, for a feeling of condemnation which creates a separation between you and someone else. Focus instead on the world’s infinite resource; the love within all of our hearts. Make your dreams come true in September! Call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) You seem to be desperately lacking something. Or, could it be that you’ve somehow managed to convince yourself that everything would be improved by something you don’t seem to be able to get hold of? It’s worth being clear about this… because, with Venus in your opposite sign as we start September, you may find that you receive what you desire. Nature abhors a vacuum and fills up space when it senses a need. So if you’re uncertain about what you want, embrace and enjoy the sense of spaciousness. There’s excellent news in your September prediction. Call 1900 959 005.

The broken bow sprit of the 10-metre yacht near IGA on the evening 13th August 2019, the mooring ropes and chains (below water line) were hopelessly tangled and hence dragging the front of the boat down as the tide came in. Our callout crew, skippered by Coxswain Nigel Cleminson assisted by Coxswain Simon Middap and crewmen Jon Brice and Peter Paschke with the help of the owner (onboard) managed to cut the rope and reattach another as a temporary fix.

SAFETY DAVE’S MESSAGE In light of the missing fishermen from the Southern end of Moreton bay recently – if you have a life jacket, WEAR IT, it can’t save you whilst it is stowed away! Life jacket rules and regulations for Queensland: Life jackets are a vital piece of safety equipment that could save your life in Queensland. The best idea is to make sure you wear it. Put the life jacket on as part of your pre-trip preparation. It is a lot harder to put a life jacket on in the water during an emergency. Life jacket rules: It is compulsory in Queensland to wear a life jacket: • •

when crossing a designated coastal bar in an open boat that is less than 4.8m in length if you are under 12 years old (from 12 months old and up to, but not including, 12 years old) in an open boat that is less than 4.8m in length and underway. Legislation also requires that: boat owners or skippers must give each person on board information about where safety equipment is kept and clearly sign where life jackets are stowed. The labels must have the word ‘life jacket’ in red text on a white background or white text on a red background life jackets must comply and display information about which Australian Standard (AS) applies. The lifejacket must comply with this standard. The current standard is AS 4758, which has replaced AS 1512-1996, AS 1499-1996 and AS 2260-1996. Life jackets that meet these previous standards are still acceptable to use if they are in good condition.

BEACH REPORT
By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
Welcome to another Beach report from Gateway Discovery Tours.
T
he beach is currently closed to the public but will reopen Wednesday 4th September 2019, however it will only open as far up as 3rd or Mermaid lagoon, the rest will remain closed until further notice, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by authorities. Following this bushfire contained in the Bribie Island National Park last week, Rangers advise arborists (tree specialists) have been brought in and are busy ensuring that trees are safe for vehicles or people to be around. There are 70 or so campsites on Ocean Beach which are directly next to where the bush-fire tore through, any damage by the fire is unknown at this time. Our National Parks Wildlife Rangers have been extremely busy finding and saving injured animals and birds. As the northern part of the island was burnt some wildlife requires relocation to the southern end. You may have seen media coverage about the loss of kangaroos and other wildlife on Ocean beach,
this is devastating, but sadly once the fire moved in along the beach no one could get to animals and many fell victim to this fire. We are disappointed that the firebreak which was to be constructed adjacent to the campsites, although approved and announced by Government 3 years ago, it was never cleared for the fire break, it most certainly would have saved one fifth or 10 square kilometres of the total area of our National Park from being burnt and that’s not to mention the poor wildlife that would have suffered. This firebreak was also to allow campers to escape in safety, not having to go through big old trees at lighthouse reach that are prone to dropping branches in strong winds. When you get up the beach next week while enjoying yourselves please keep an eye out for injured wildlife and phone the Rangers. Please respect the islands natural beauty and habitat, taking all your rubbish with you as there are no public bins in these areas, so please keep our island clean and tidy.

YOUR SAY
RANTS & RAVES Dear Editor, Our magazine The Bribie Islander just seems to get better with every issue and while I constantly voice my approval of the exceptional content which celebrates our community in the most positive way I feel once again I must congratulate you on the variety of articles allowing us to keep it local. From rehabilitation to the joy of Elaine Lutton’s arrival part 1, A tree for all seasons turning plastics into prosthetics, busy fingers, Barry Clark’s history taking us on a journey to visit the past, Anne Matthews (PR Rotary) enlightening article on polio to Helly Kemps, Celebrities of the 20 century and each article takes us on a journey of information, knowledge and entertainment. Another great magazine to distribute to visitors and friends. Thank you, Richard, the Team and regular contributors for making Bribie Island a real community. William Peacock OAM
Dear Editor, We met in Brennan Park one day when you were taking a break, and I was with my granddaughter. Enjoying the magazine as always. I was the chap doing the cryptic crossword. I have a 78
query about a bird if you pass it on to Marj for me. When I lived in Salisbury, Brisbane, besides Toohey Forest there was a bird that would start up at 4 a.m and go quiet at dawning. Seems to be a mating call from Mid August – through September. It is exceptionally LOUD and has a repeating call that seemed to vary year after year in its note arrangement. Piercing is another word I’d use. And when I say repeating, the exact same note arrangement, eight times a minute. It has followed me to Bribie, it seems. Some people say it is a butcher bird. Butcher birds never seem this loud to me during their daytime song. So any advice would be appreciated. Regards, John Martin, Bribie.

Dear Editor, I was standing at the taxi rank at the Bribie Shopping Centre when a young woman approached me and asked if I had phoned for a cab. When I replied that no, I was living in hope, this woman offered to drive me home. Don’t know if it was the white hair, mature age or bags of shopping, but this thoughtful young woman put my shopping in her boot and drove me home. It transpired during the journey that the woman lived at White Patch, and

she was driving me to the other end of the island. My offer of a contribution toward fuel was politely declined. How wonderful it is to find that kindness, courtesy and decency lives on our beautiful island home. Thank you to this lovely young woman. Many thanks from Carol Gillam of Bribie.
