ABOUT US

welcome...

#98 October 11th 2019

Hello Readers, Here we are again, it was two weeks since we last published, hope YOU’RE all going well. The days are getting longer and the temperature is rising as we draw nearer to the summer months, what a cracker of a long weekend and Bribie has been a hot spot once again with visitors and tourists, flooding to the island seeking the natural beauty it offers. I was lucky enough to have a break over the weekend, where else would you want to go camping with the family other than Bribie... the Island of paradise, just east of that big place we call the mainland. We enjoyed time with friends sitting by the beach, I met up with our fishing Guru Vin Donovan and we took the kids crabbing in Moreton Bay. We enjoyed a swim in the sea and had fun on the kayaks. We had a barbeque and cooked up some Woorim snags, we ate the freshest sand crabs possible and us adults also enjoyed a few beers and a glass of wine or two. Where else would you want to live, work and play? As always, I hope you enjoy issue #98 and continue “Living the dream on Bribie!” “Don’t forget to utilise the businesses in this community magazine, without them we are not printing.” Stay safe and enjoy ‘our’ beautiful island paradise. Take Care,

Living the Dream on Bribie

By Richard Whetlor

Part 2

I

met David and Julie at their house in the gated development of Solana Lifestyle Resort at Bongaree. I noticed the house inside is nice and spacious, open plan with a stunning kitchen and living room, very fresh looking, we decide to chat outside at the table in the garden.

8

David and Julie moved in on the 10th May 2019 after putting a deposit down on another place then changing their minds upon finding Solana. They are enjoying their new dwelling and surroundings with lots to do or not to do, it’s up to you. When I asked them, what made them choose Solana it was a case of homework.

www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

The fact that Solana is a gated development helped them choose, as well as ample storage for resident’s caravans and a caravan storage facility planned, they can shoot off in the van and know that the place is all locked up and the neighbours are their security guards too. If you feel a bit anti-social or just want time to yourself, simply shut your front door! There’s plenty to do with a tennis court, indoor heated and outdoor swimming pools, full size lawn bowls, gymnasium, craft room, snooker table, bar, cinema and wellness centre which offers even more.

The location was an important part of the choice being able to walk to the shops, walk to the bus station and walk to the beach means all the services you need are on your doorstep. Location, location, location. You are more than welcome to have a sticky beak at available properties and see for yourself what this place really has to offer and why they chose to live here. Simply call Solana on 1300 967 060 and maybe, just maybe you could be “Living the Dream on Bribie!”

zFish Unlimited is partnering with RMIT, a leading Australian tertiary institution and global university of technology and design, on their Pesticides Detectives programme. This is a national Citizen Science research project investigating the occurrences and concentration of pesticides in Australian waterways. It is funded by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Business and undertaken by the Aquatic Environmental Stress Research Group (AQUEST) based at RMIT University. The goal of the project is to provide communities across Australia an opportunity for involvement in a simple, yet meaningful monitoring program where they can learn about the health of their local waterways and have an awareness of the pressures placed on them, while also providing valuable data on the quality of Australia’s waterways in respect to pesticides. Of primary concern is the everincreasing use of chemicals in our everyday life, and the risks they pose to the health and beneficial uses of waterways. Pesticides are one group of contaminants increasingly being detected in waterways across Australia and worldwide. They are chemical

Ozfish members will collect samples from very fine muddy sediment to send for testing. compounds that are used to control, prevent, kill, suppress, or repel pests. “Pesticide” is a broad term that includes insecticides (insect killers), herbicides (weed or plant killers), fungicides (fungus killers), rodenticides (rodent killers), growth regulators, and other materials like miticides, which are used for mite control, or products that kill snails and slugs (molluscicides). There are thousands of different pesticides in use today in and around houses, shops, offices, storerooms, sheds, gardens, farms, pastoral stations and many other places. The project will advance our knowledge base on the state of Australian aquatic environments, providing data to inform on priority pesticides of concern at local, regional and national levels. Our local Ozfish Pumicestone Passage Chapter is assisting in the programme in conjunction with their reef building and improving the oyster presence in our passage. The origin of yodel Just over 700 years old, Switzerland is 20 times

smaller than Queensland. Two thirds of this tiny country consists of snow capped mountains, glaciers, torrents, forests and alpine pastures. Imagine Switzerland long before radio and cars. For farmers and herders, life in such an environment was difficult and lonely. Often they found themselves in the mountains for up to three months alone with their cows.

What is a yodel? To communicate with other herders and their families, the mountain folk developed yodelling. This singing without words is characterised by constant alternating between chest and head voices. Yodel echoes greatly throughout the mountains, giving comfort and fellowship to the isolated herders.

Watering the new green

EXCITEMENT IS RISING! By Kathy Vincent

B

ribie Island Croquet Club are having a very exciting time as we almost have a fifth court to play on. Work has been continuing for months now, preparing the area, levelling the ground, treating the soil to try to prevent weed growth, laying the turf, regular cutting, and that is just the court. Then a fence needed to be put in place and a new shelter seat erected. Busy Fingers kindly supplied the shelter shed to protect any players sitting out from the Queensland sun. We are almost there. The grass was cut again this week but it is not very green. You can see in the photograph Dick Byres the President appealingly to the skies for some rain! At the moment we are watering it in the hopes that it will be ready for the Official Opening on 9th October. This will be a fantastic help to the club because with membership growing sometimes there are too many people to play on the existing 4 courts on Wednesday’s and Fridays.

Soon we will be able to utilise all five courts with the possibility of playing different disciplines playing at any one time. We play Golf Croquet, Association Croquet, Ricochet and Gate ball. Why not come and have a go?

ROTARY also members of the Local Ambulance Committee (LAC). I must admit that I was hesitant about using an AED, however after watching the demonstration, I realised the devices are designed to be easy to use and no “formal” training is needed. As soon as you turn the AED on it starts talking and takes you step by step through what to do. Remove all clothing between the neck and waistline, get rid of any water on the person and if necessary shave a small patch on the chest so the pads have direct contact with the skin. Place one pad below the right shoulder and one under the heart (left ribcage). The AED will then deliver a shock which interrupts the erratic rhythm of the heart, giving it a chance to return Bernie Wilson demonstrates to its normal rhythm. You how to use AED should then continue CPR. The device will continue to It is also important to know monitor the person’s heart if an AED is available for and if it stops again the use, and is close by. It is different things. A heart used when someone has an attack is when an artery SCA. This is when the heart in the heart gets blocked suddenly stops pumping. or becomes too narrow The defibrillator analyses for blood to flow through the heart rhythm and normally. This prevents decides whether an electric blood from getting to some shock is needed. AEDs can be used by almost anybody in an emergency. They guide you through each step of the process. They won’t give the person an electric shock unless it’s necessary, so you can’t harm someone by using an AED.

We have a Defibrillator! By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary

T

he Scene: You see a person clutch their chest, lose all colour in their face, and suddenly fall to the ground, unconscious, displaying no signs of life. No – it’s not a TV show or play – its real-life, occurring in front of you. It happens everywhere, every day, across Australia. These signs can indicate that the person is suffering from a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). According to the National Heart Foundation, each year, more than 20,000 Australians suffer an SCA. A cardiac arrest is usually fatal and Australian medical authorities say only about 10% of those 20,000 people survive. Thus 18,000 die! St John Ambulance Australia said its figures showed the survival rate was more like 5% (19,000 deaths). No matter which statistic is correct, that is far too many lives being lost each year. Calling 000 and giving the person immediate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) are the most important things to do. But if you can also quickly locate, and use a Defibrillator, this can increase their chances of survival by 70%. Saving someone’s life comes down to an issue of response time. In the interests of all Briberians, Bribie Rotary has recently purchased an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), with grant money received from “The Gambling Community Benefit Fund”, for use on the Island. It is most important, however, to know when an AED should be used and when you should use CPR.

Last month, Bribie Rotary dedicated one of their weekly meetings to watch a demonstration on how to use a Defibrillator. The demonstration was conducted by two of our members Rae Guyder and Bernie Wilson who are

parts of the heart muscle. This damages the heart, sometimes permanently. On the other hand, a cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating. This means that the blood stops flowing to all parts of the body including the heart and brain. As soon as this happens the process of death starts. At some point, usually within 10 minutes, the damage to the heart and brain will become so great that it can’t be reversed. The chance of survival drops by around 10% every minute after the heart stops. With a cardiac arrest, urgent treatment is required to keep the blood moving around the body and to try to ‘restart’ the heart. When CPR and AED are provided within the first few minutes the chances of survival are the greatest. AEDs are usually found in shopping centres, workplaces, sports grounds, hospitals and gyms. This year, Woolworths is rolling them out to all its stores across Australia for the use of both workers and customers. Our Bribie Rotary AED will be located in our Rotary Market Van and will be available to anyone in need on Rotary Market Day - the second Sunday of each month. you know where the AED is – get it. Helping early is the key to life! Remember: If a defibrillator and/or CPR is used correctly within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest/ heart attack, survival rates jump from 5 per cent to 70 per cent. Perhaps 10,000+ lives can be saved. A READER’S STORY It began harmlessly enough, giving no indication of the traumas to come. I looked out of the window and noted it was pouring with rain. In fact, most people were calling out how good it was to see the rain again. This was a sentiment with which I concurred as it would put out our recent bushfire and settle the smoke.

Arrival

By Elaine Lutton

PART 5

I am so relieved to wake up this morning and start a new day! Yesterday was a complete disaster; a domestic version of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

I was so buoyed with optimism, I decided to use the three rotting bananas eyeing me reproachfully from the fruit bowl, and make a banana and sultana fruit loaf. There was no need to consult the recipe as I had made it many times before. However, I did note that the creaming of the butter and sugar was not going quite as smoothly as usual, but no worry, this was my fool-proof recipe, apart from the time I had inadvertently added arrowroot instead of bicarbonate of soda to the mix. I continued merrily on my Nigellaway, and placed it lovingly in the oven, checking after twenty minutes or so.... very brown but enthusiastically risen!

Perhaps I should have consulted the recipe. I had doubled the amount of sugar and been far too liberal with the raising agents. Well, it was too late now. I watched as the mixture dribbled down the side of the cake tin. I decided not to watch. Next, I tackled the washing. Due to the inclement weather, I decided to put the first load of washing into the dryer, while the second load of washing went into the machine. At first, there were lots of re-assuring whirring noises, but then a sudden loud clunk, followed by an eerie silence. I shouted for the husband to examine the neighbour’s lights and our trip switch. This necessitated him going outside and drowning. Both lights and trip switch seemed fine, (husband less so!). By this time, I am imagining huge bills for repairs on white goods. Then I had the bright idea of checking the power surge protector board to which the dryer, dishwasher and machine were all plugged into. I discovered this was the cause of the problem, and after pushing the red button, they all started up again.

A few minutes later, piercing beeps shattered my nerves, as the steam from the dryer sent off the smoke detector. I climbed upon a very wobbly chair, and, after performing delicate twisting manoeuvres, removed the battery, making mental notes to reverse the procedure when the drying of washing was completed. Next, I must put the dishwasher on, as there were yesterday’s dishes and the clutter from the abortive cake cooking to deal with. I loaded the machine, turned the appropriate dial, and “answer came there none”. Panic set in. I ran around in circles making chook noises with a rubber glove on my head. In a last desperate attempt, I moved the dial half a degree to the left and off it went. I retired shaking. A little later, I remembered the cake and “Mirabile dictus”, I successfully extricated it from the tin. Not burned, but deeply browned, as my grandmother would have said. In a moment of over-confidence, I decided that the dish-washer should be cleaned before it began to smell.

I emptied the dishwasher without breaking anything so my confidence was almost fully restored. I read the instructions on the dishwasher cleaner and they looked straight forward and easy.

They lied. After a full cycle, although I had followed the instructions to the letter, I discovered that the top had not automatically opened, so I decided to help things along by piercing the top. A big mistake! The machine made noises for ages and ages but the dial did not turn. When I investigated, I found the washer full of foam which flooded all over the floor when I opened the door, necessitating much mopping. This happened twice more. My general equilibrium was not helped by the sound of heavy snoring coming from the bedroom! My soulmate had gone to have a little snooze. I tried to spin the wet towels in the washing machine forgetting, that due to the eccentricities of the plumbing, (son in law), you cannot have the

dishwasher and the washing machine on together. I eventually managed to clear up the mess, trying not to think about water and electricity. The dishwasher was still full of foam but after gentle playing with the dial, I managed to get it to pump out. It was time for the evening meal preparation, something simple I thought, but I could not even manage to cook sausages without (a) burning them, (b) dropping them on the floor, whilst (c) making very lumpy gravy. I told fellow inmates that they had better not complain, as they were very fortunate to get fed at all. Soul-mate, either in spirit of selfpreservation, or genuine pity for the blubbering wreck before him, took me into the garage and we shared a bottle of wine, had a laugh, and my shakes began to settle. The sausages were consumed, and I retreated to bed to watch the latest mind-numbing episode of Midsummer Murders. I soon drifted off to sleep, having survived the day. Just!

Permanent Pain Relief Through Postural Correction by Dion Argent, PES-NASM

Is Permanent Pain Relief Possible for the over 50’s?

again my over 50’s clients experience permanent pain relief, and dramatically increase their quality of life. Talking to many people in pain, I have found that the real reason for peoples limited belief, is that they have only ever experienced ongoing therapeutic pain relief. Eventually, the pain returns, no matter how many practitioners they try and in return, resort to the belief that their pain must be because of old age!

Could this be You? Honestly, there are some structural and degenerative diseases and disorders where temporary pain relief is the only option, but not many. After a pain relief analysis, you can determine whether a person’s pain is able to be reversed permanently or not. Very rarely do you find pain that needs constant treatment over a long time for relief.

Can Postural Correction help my Pain? More than often postural correction doesn’t just bring temporary relief, but permanent relief of pain, because it uncovers the underlying and hidden causes. For postural correction to be effective, the whole skeletal system (joints and ligaments) and muscular system (muscles

Soon after postural correction takes place, pain begins to slowly reduce, until it fully disappears. At this point, another analysis is taken to see how the postural correction has affected the rest of the body. If the whole body has not been corrected by the change, even if the pain has disappeared, it will reoccur later, and the issue has not been corrected permanently. This process is continued until the whole posture has been aligned and balanced. Permanent relief is not possible until each joint is in alignment and each muscle is balanced through postural correction exercises.

WINELANDER H

ere’s a question that I get asked almost on a daily basis, or maybe weekly, or maybe monthly actually I never get asked at all and that is what is ‘Icewine” or to give it its original title Eiswein. Last time we were in Canada I bought a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc Icewine and am yet to open it as it only comes in 200ml bottles and you have the right occasion and the right food, any more than four of you and each would get a thimble full, anyway here is the answer to the question what nobody ever asks. The first Eiswein is believed to have been made in Germany in the late 1700’s when freezing weather struck before the grape crop could be harvested. However the winemaker persisted, harvesting and pressing the frozen grapes and fermenting the juice into a sweet wine. Germany and Austria continue

30

to produce Eiswein but sometime their moderate European winters do not always provide the cold weather needed to freeze the grapes. When German immigrants arrived in Canada they carried on the tradition of making what is now called Icewine mainly in British Columbia and Ontario starting in the 1970’s. There are usually ideal conditions for reliable production, warm summers to ripen the grapes and cold winters, Ontario is now the leading Icewine producer and has earned global acclaim for its Icewine. Icewine is made from grapes that have been left to freeze naturally on the vine. It produces a luscious intensely flavoured wine with rich aromas and flavours of ripe tropical fruits such as lychee, papaya and pineapple. Made from white wine

grapes and red wine grapes all the varietals are sweet but have a firm backbone of acidity making them firmly balanced. As it is a desert wine it needs to be chilled and as with sauternes and botrytis affected wines they not only compliment deserts but also aged blue cheese and foie gras. Icewine must be made from approved grape varieties such as Vidal, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet sauvignon. In Canada the season starts in the autumn with the netting of the grape vines to protect the grapes from the birds, the grapes are then left on the vine until the temperature reaches a sustained -8 degrees centigrade or lower sometime between December and February when during the time between the end of the

By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au

growing season and the harvest the grapes dehydrate concentrating the juices and creating the characteristic complexities of Icewine. Typically a period of at least six hours is needed to harvest the grapes, most being picked by hand, while still frozen the grapes are pressed leaving most of the water behind as ice. Because only a small amount of concentrated juice is extracted, it takes about 3-4 kilograms of grapes to produce a 200ml bottle about 15% as against the expected yield of normal table wine and it can actually get too cold to pick the grapes because at -14 degrees the grapes yield too little juice, one year Inniskillin started pressing the grapes at midnight and didn’t see a dribble of juice until 8.00am and during the night the frozen grapes broke two wine presses! The juice is very sweet

REGULAR and can be fairly difficult to ferment and what is left is relatively low in alcohol with high sugar levels but the result is liquid gold and some of the finest desert wine in the world, the most expensive Icewine ever sold was Royal DeMaria 2006 Chardonnay Icewine which was sold for $30,000 and they now list the award winning 2000 vintage Chardonnay Icewine for a cool (sorry) $250,000 per bottle. The market is very important to Canada as they are now the largest producer of Icewine in the world producing 2.5 million bottles last year which was worth $70 million retail and Canada was recognised in International competition for its Icewine when a wine from the Inniskillin Estates Winery in Niagara won the coveted Grand Prix d’Honneur in 1991 at Bordeaux VinExpo. Unfortunately everywhere seems to be out of stock at the moment of the Canadian wines however it appears that Frogmore Creeks Iced Riesling made in Tasmania and which uses a tank freezing process is available at Dan Murphy’s for around $23 for a 375ml bottle. I had an email from Lissa this week who buys her wine on line and asked why I mention BWS, Dan Murphy’s and Liquorland so much which is a fair observation. I would like to expand my purchasing options and should include the BottleMart over at the Sandstone Point Hotel but apart from the clubs we are pretty starved for choice. I still feel it is a pity that The Comisky Group didn’t invest in a small version of Harry Browns similar to their outlet at the Eatons Hill Hotel but whether we would have given it the support necessary to make it viable is probably

FEATURE doubtful but looking at the number that turn up for their shows who knows? I had a Ned Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand this week from Liquorland which was very good and Liquorland also promoted their VinVale Shiraz again from Shingleback in McLaren Vale, but a great buy was from Dan Murphy’s which was The Serafino Shiraz which normally retails at $22 a bottle but during September if you bought one bottle you got another free. Serafino Winery is owned by The Maglieri Family who have been making outstanding wines for many years initially under their own name until the winery was purchased some years ago and is now part of The Treasury Estates Wine Group. Cheers, Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au

Carolyn’s Tax Tips with Carolyn Wheeler CM Wheeler & Associates

It’s time for everyone to prepare their documentation in readiness for their Accountant (or Tax Agent). Are you able to find what you need to bring to your appointment? One of the most important aspects of preparation is your filing system. Buy some folders, name them and use them. As a salary and wage earner you need an Annual Tax Folder in which to place any work-related expenses including uniform purchases, tools, telephone bills, donations and any other expense you may or may not be sure of claiming. That can always be reviewed at the end of the year by us when preparing your return. As a sole trader or partnership, records of your income and expenses need to be kept annually, monthly, or 3 if preparing a quarterly BAS. Larger businesses will have a full filing system. An annual file for a Rental Property file would include Real Estate monthly and annual statement and expenses paid such as rates, water, body corporate, insurance and repairs to name a few. More permanent files could include a bank loan file, an insurance file with the current policy documents, purchase records of a rental property and include any capital improvements, individual files for each share investment with contracts for purchase price, dividends received or dividend reinvestments, and a file for assets purchased over $30,000. The annual files must be kept for 5 years. The last year now required to be kept is 2015 tax year end. So, throw out those old records, but check carefully first. Should you require assistance and planning for your record keeping, please contact the office for an appointment. Regards Carolyn Wheeler of C M Wheeler & Assoc. TAKE A PHOTO OF ROADKILL FOR SCIENCE New citizen science project documents numbers of animals killed on the road

A

ustralians are being urged to slow down, stop the car and take a photo of any dead animals they see on the road or by the side of the road, as part of a citizen science project documenting roadkill during the month of

October. (Please take care on the roads, stay safe at all times.) Roadkill impacts the Australian environment by wiping out more than four million mammals and six million birds, reptiles and other creatures a year. It can contribute to species such as koalas, wedge-tailed eagles and Tasmanian devils becoming extinct in the wild.

“Vehicles are the new predator on the block,” said Bruce Englefield, a PhD student and researcher in the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney. “Animals have no innate survival behaviour to protect themselves. Vehicles give little warning, travel at a speed unknown in any other predator and kill indiscriminately, a recipe for extinction.”

The Arts Centre was constructed on a large tract of Crown Land, enough to harbour a multi-faceted arts and craft precinct fronting Sunderland Drive. A few years later, a number of Bribie Islanders met to investigate the feasibility of

a woodcraft centre to cater for wood enthusiasts from Bribie and surrounding districts. Their proposal for a Woodcraft Club met with approval and, following a period of planning and fundraising, a small industrial shed was erected to house the Woodcraft activities on a parcel of land at the rear of the precinct. From these humble beginnings, the Club has grown beyond the expectation of its founders,

Shirley Collyer Pyrographer, Specialist Box Maker and Furniture Constructor In 2002 I became a member of Bribie Woodcrafters, joining the pyrography (wood burning) class, which meets on Tuesday afternoons. With the help and support from members of the pyrography group, I soon learnt the art of burning on

wood and have spent the last 17 years perfecting this craft and I’m still learning. In 2016, when I retired from work, one of the Life Members took the time to show me how to make a small box. That was it, I was hooked and I wanted to make more. Now, thanks to the many talented members sharing their knowledge, expertise and time with me, I am making jewellery boxes, as well as making some small furniture items.

Woodies’ Humble Beginnings with Club facilities and equipment now servicing around 200 male and female woodcrafters and wood artists pursuing a multi-disciplinary range of activities. Current interests popular with members include wood turning, small box making, wood carving, furniture making, scroll saw work and pyrography. The Club is also mindful that it is part of the greater Bribie community and, to that end, carries out woodworking projects for other community organisations, as well as raising funds to donate to charitable organisations and causes.

Bribie Woodies encourages people from all backgrounds to join and enjoy the experience of working with wood, as well as the benefits of being part of an organisation providing a creative and safe environment for its members.

I enjoy interacting with and the company of the Club’s members, many of whom come from different countries/ cultures, walks of life and professional backgrounds. We really have our own United Nations here at Bribie Woodies.

O

riginally, I wanted to retire in Europe and spent 5 years studying where to retire in Europe prior to my retirement.

However, in 2005 my oldest daughter, Midori, decided to get married on Bribie Island, so my wife, Yoshiko, and I travelled from Japan to Bribie Island for her wedding and my plans to retire in Europe evaporated. I fell in love with Bribie Island. I retired in October 2006 and we moved to Bribie Island the following month. Despite the fact that we were very keen to live in Australia, we found it very difficult to obtain a permanent visa which, in retrospect, was probably for the better. In August 2008 we left Bribie Island and moved to

Penang, a good move as it located us geographically roughly halfway between our two daughters, Yukari, our youngest, who lives in Yokohama, Japan and Midori who lives in Brisbane - both are easily accessible. I have always had a keen interest in woodcraft and wood arts since I was 8 years old, so it was natural that I joined Bribie Woodcrafters in February 2007 and, despite moving to Penang to live, we have returned every year for the past 12 years to, obviously visit our daughter and her family, and for me to catch up with my friends at Woodcrafters, enjoy the camaraderie and work on improving my wood turning skills. I’ve been asked many times why I keep coming back to Bribie Woodies. My response always is that I’ve found the Club to be like a big family, where experienced members of

Susumu Tomiyama, International Member from Penang - Inside-Outside Turning the family are happy and willing to provide advice and guidance to those prepared to learn. There’s also the fact that the Club has extensive workshops and machinery, timber supplies for members and is very welcoming to new members. What do I do in Penang to pass the time between my Bribie visits? I joined the Penang Science Cluster at the request of its founder who asked me to become a volunteer mentor and

share my woodcrafting knowledge and expertise with young Malaysian students. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and observing students becoming enthralled with “The Wonder of Wood”. It is very rewarding and, I believe, I benefit more from the experience than my students. I know that this year’s exhibition will be a huge success.

COMMUNITY A small area of Lulu Land where kids can play to turn up as a hippy or a Gorillagram or Bo Peep? All you need to do is remember to call Lulu and ask what is it you require? Lulu will offer you a unique service with thousands of costumes available for hire as well.

Lulu’s Party Shop By Richard Whetlor

T

here is a little party shop that some of you may not even know existed, that has its roots firmly embedded into Bribie Island over decades, and carries many surprises... let me tell you more. I have known Lulu for quite some time through The Bribie Islander as a business and Lulu as a past advertiser, also an “Islander Extraordinaire” written by our local retired Journo, Mr Neil Wilson. This was back in a past issue, long ago, when we were a newspaper, not a glossy magazine. I love to help local business and enjoy seeing our customers getting results and growing from

their advertising. Lulu Drew has been a Bribie local for around 30 years and she is known to be a great contributor and entertainer to the island in many ways and a true local that cares about Bribie, her family and friends. There are a lot of people on the island that knows her or has hired a party costume or seen her party shop on the waterfront at Bongaree. Lulu has recently become one of our magazine deliverers to Banksia Beach, Woorim and Bongaree. You may have seen her party bus delivering the latest Bribie Islander magazine to you!? Now, for example, if her shop of wonders and magical stuff was not there,

where would you go for your party stuff? There are many bargain shops around but check this out, she offers many different services that the others don’t and you would be off to Brisbane to find a similar outfit, excuse the pun, and a 6 am delivery service too. Picture this... It’s the day before your sons or daughter’s birthday or Dads or Mums and you wish you had been more organised with plans in place to make their day extra special? But life is so busy. Knock knock. Lulu is outside your house, it’s 6 am in the morning, and she has balloons and birthday gifts to make your family members day super special. But that’s not all... Are you looking for a Buzz Lightyear or Superman or woman? Would you like her

Just like the Woodies article in the last issue, looking for logs, they had an enormous response, so, let’s get some action to Lulu’s Party Shop? Just up from the Museum at Bongaree, let’s make sure she is not history, but a special place to visit and support another Bribie local business as Lulu told me that business is really slow. Pop in and take a look there is a lot of novelties, gifts, treats, costumes, make up etc the list goes on and on. Lulu’s party shop also has Lulu’s Land out the back which is a magical garden for that extra special day to cater for adults too while the kids run riot and have lots of fun. Call Lulu to discuss your requirements and let her make your special occasion, one to remember, with a telegram that no other local business offers, this is a one of a kind service! Call Lulu now to say G’Day and have a chat to discuss your party or birthday needs on 0407 148 554. Support local business.

Eastern Osprey Note small crest

Eastern Osprey Pandion cristatus By Marj Webber

A familiar sight on Bribie Island is the Eastern Osprey flying over the Pumicestone Passage and along the coastline at Woorim searching for food. Several large nests are found on the island and there are also nests which can be viewed from the road to Caboolture. 44

www.thebribieislander.com.au

E

astern Ospreys are large bicoloured fishing hawks which are quite a distinctive sight in flight or on a perch. Females and males are similar to the females at 65 cm in length slightly larger than the males. Females weigh 1.2-1.6 kg with the males a little smaller. Inflight the wings with a span of 1.7 m move slowly with distinctive fingers showing at each wingtip. Short spiky crests are noticeable when they are perched usually in open areas. They have strong and hooked beaks which are used to tear their prey apart before eating. Nostrils can be shut to keep the water out. Feathers are oily so that they do not become saturated while fishing. The mostly silent Ospreys are quite noisy during the breeding time making mournful whistling sounds. Lifespan is 7-10 years and occasionally a little longer. Their habitat is somewhere near the water in coastal areas, beaches and large waterholes. They do not venture far out to sea but will travel

sometimes a few hundred kilometres inland if the feeding grounds are suitable. They are mostly sedentary and not usually migratory. Eastern Ospreys are also found in the Philippines, Indonesia and PNG. 99% of their diet is fish. When hunting they soar at about 10-40 m in the air looking for food. Their eyesight is exceptionally good, and they can spot a fish from a great distance. They drop feet first with wings folded into the water and grab their prey in their strong, sharp claws then rise vertically from the surface with the fish firmly held. Two of their toes are reversible which allows them to grip slippery fish with two claws in front and two behind. Usually, the fish are caught close to the surface, but Ospreys have been known to plunge as deep as a metre for their food. With the catch held firmly, they fly to a nearby perch to rip apart and pick mouth-sized bites and slowly devour the meal looking up for danger after almost CONTINUES NEXT PAGE 46

NATURE CONTINUED every bite. It is important that their prey is not too large which would make it difficult to lift from the water. Sea snakes are sometimes eaten, and in the north, an occasional flying fox is on the menu. Ospreys are monogamous and mostly stay together for life. Breeding depends a lot on climatic conditions and in SE Queensland it is usually around June-August. Nests are built in high trees, manmade structures and on cliff faces. Sticks, bark and other debris found in the vicinity make up an untidy nest. Both parent birds collect the materials, but it is the female that builds the nest. Nests are usually used year after year and each season more sticks added until in

some cases the nest measures up to 2 m high and 2 m across. New nests are usually quite small. 2-3 brownish motley eggs are laid and incubated by the female for about 33 days. Males are the hunters and bring the fish to the female on the nest who breaks it up to feed the young. Chicks can eat 3-5 fish a day. When food is in short supply the first hatched and the strongest chick is most likely to survive. After about 50-60 days the babies are ready to leave the nest and then stay with their parents for 3-5 months. They then disperse and begin their breeding life at 3-4 years. Their scientific name cristatus is derived from the Latin meaning “Crested.

Ospreys have been on earth for at least 11 million years and have evolved differently in some ways from other raptors. Unique to Ospreys are the reversible back toes and the closable nostrils. Conservation status of Eastern Ospreys is federally secure, vulnerable in NSW, rare in SA and not present in Victoria and Tasmania. Ospreys have adapted somewhat to the human population in that they build on manmade structures and fish around populated areas. Rubbish in our waterways and abandoned fishing lines and hooks can be a problem for their wellbeing.

MENTAL HEALTH

UNDERSTANDING WORTHLESSNESS By Veronica Mercer -Mental Health Accredited Social Worke

T

he noun worthlessness can describe an object’s lack of value, but it’s more often used to describe people —specifically in relation to how we feel about our self. If we experience multiple setbacks in our lives like job loss, financial struggle, divorce, or not like our looks, we can end up feeling like our lives have no meaning. “Why Do I feel Worthless?”: When Nothing Helps Often, feelings of worthlessness can be a symptom of depression. Many depressive disorders leave patients feeling alone, unworthy of social interaction, and unworthy of help. The trouble is, this is a vicious circle and those feelings often foster greater depression. In cases of clinical depression, it is recommended that you seek help from a professional. I believe it’s mostly related to how we view life itself. • Feeling worthless is one of the deepest and darkest emotions we can encounter. • Unfortunately, life isn’t fair, and we will find our self-feeling worthless without warning. 48

www.thebribieislander.com.au

• We are dependent on so many things in order to feel our worth. • Feeling worthless derives from different areas and reasons. Why we feel the way we do A good look into our own thoughts, feelings, and emotions will help reveal the culprit. Our character can help us squash feeling worthless and highlight the truth. 1. Comparisons • When we compare ourselves to others and feel ugly in these comparisons, we find ourselves feeling worthless. 2. Losing identity • We start feeling worthless when we lose our identity. • During life, we go through different phases and chapters. • Within these chapters, we take on various roles, e.g. daughters, wives, mother. 3. Criticism • Early in life, you may have encountered a huge amount of criticism. • As an adult, you may have carried this criticism with you and all the healthy critique you receive is met with bitterness. • Sometimes worthlessness does

The Bribie Islander

come from past criticisms. • It can grow and accumulate in insults over the depreciation that’s hard to heal. 4. Negativity • After encountering so many bad situations and people, we become programmed to think everything will go wrong. • We find it pointless to try and do better because everything will turn out negatively anyway. 5. Mental illness • If you suffer from a mental health disorder such as depression, feelings of worthlessness will come often. • You also won’t be able to pinpoint a specific action which causes this…because there is none. • There can be triggers, but these triggers may be random and hard to discover. • This is one thing that makes mental illness so deadly. 6. Health issues • Believe it or not, your physical health can make you feel worthless. • If you’ve lost your ability to walk, eat certain foods, or do otherwise enjoyable activities, you may start to feel like nothing matters anymore. • Your health can also play a more direct role in feeling worthless as well when chemicals and hormones are out of balance. I think we all feel worthless sometimes… Maybe you don’t know why you feel worthless, but you just do. Whatever is causing these feelings cannot stop you from trying to eliminate them. Despite what’s happening in your life or what has happened, you can choose to do better and be better. We must understand that no one is perfect, and the perfection we may see in others is not real. Beneath the attractive details that you feel you don’t have, lies the faults and imperfections. Just like you, everyone else is full of doubts and faults. Remember “Your value is the product of your thoughts. Do not miscalculate your self-worth by multiplying your insecurities”. - Dodinsky The most important thing is… Never give up! – Wishing you all good mental well-being – Cheers Veronica.

HISTORY

DUNDALLI -

Bribie Freedom Fighter By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society

The last OFFICIAL PUBLIC HANGING in QUEENSLAND took place in Brisbane on 5th January 1855. This was an indigenous resistance fighter named DUNDALLI who lived on Bribie Island. It was not the last execution in Queensland, but it was the last public hanging carried out in front of the general public.

FRONTIER WARS The Moreton Bay Penal Colony was established on the Brisbane river in1824. By the early 1840’s European free settlers were beginning to look for land beyond the 50 mile limit of the Penal settlement. They simply searched out and settled on any suitable land with little regard for native

tribal territory, destruction of native food sources, traditional aboriginal pathways or sacred sites. There was little understanding or recognition that these lands had been occupied for tens of thousands of years. It was a “Clash of Cultures” that was taking place all over Australia which resulted in long running “Frontier Wars”. There were many clashes between the white invaders and the black indigenous people, with deaths on both sides. With such differences between the weapons being used, far more blacks were shot or in some cases poisoned. Within a few decades the once significant number of indigenous peoples of South East Queensland had been virtually wiped out.

RESISTANCE FIGHTERS There were a number of indigenous people who actively led resistance to this invasion and sought ways to negotiate settlement. Once such was a man named “DUNDALLI” who had been born in the Blackall Mountains, north east of Moreton Bay around 1820. In 1841, at the age of 21 he was part of a delegation who met with German Missionaries who had settled at Nundah a few years earlier. They sought ways to overcome conflicts and seek peaceable solutions, without success. Some 3,000 aboriginal people, from many different areas, gathered at the Bora Ground near Ningi, which is still there today.

The Bribie Islander

This was a very large gathering, indicating the

Dundalli Poster desperate concern of these people, but no effective outcome was resolved. Resistance fighting continued, and Dundalli established his base among the people of Bribie Island where he would be safer.

MORE KILLINGS As resistance fighting continued, in 1842 several indigenous people were killed with poisoned flour at a property in Kilcoy. In 1843 a shepherd was speared at the remote Durundur property of the Archer brothers at Woodford. Dundalli was already well known as an indigenous resistance fighter, and always became the suspect. There was no evidence to link him to the crimes and he evaded capture on Bribie Island, despite German Missionaries testifying as having seen him.

REGULAR COMMUNITY FEATURE

In 1846 there was a mass attack on a station at Pine river resulting in the death of Andrew Grigor and his pregnant servant. In 1847 three sawyers were killed. In 1849 fisherman Charles Gray was killed and in 1852 the robbery and death of a another shepherd.

DUNDALLI CAPTURED The legend of Dundalli, the resistance leader and ruthless killer, had developed over a period of 10 years. He was simply repaying violence with violence to defend his people.

He was a very large and distinctive man, over 6 feet tall (183cm), and a Court Judge later described him as “The largest man I have ever looked upon”. The police were closing in and eventually captured and killed three of Dundallis companions, including his brother.

Frontier Wars Despite any actual evidence, just being a well-known suspect, he was eventually captured at Fortitude Valley in 1854 and brought to trial. It was reported that he brazenly tried to bribe the judge. Based on questionable evidence, he was found guilty of the murder of Andrew Grigor in 1846, eight years earlier. He was committed to death by hanging, and the Gallows were erected in Queens Street outside the jail. On 5th January 1855 a large crowd of indigenous people assembled on Wickham Terrace, overlooking the scene. A loud cry went up when the trap door was opened and his body fell. The official executioner, who had come from Sydney, had misjudged his height and weight, and Dundalli’s feet rested on the coffin placed below. The executioner had to quickly drag down on his legs until he finally died.

THE LAST PUBLIC HANGING IN QUEENSLAND.

After many years of vengeance and retribution for white man’s land occupation and crimes, Dundalli has passed into history along with thousands of years of aboriginal culture and values that have been lost or destroyed.

Dundalli was married and quite likely had children, and a great book has been written by Dr. Libby Connors that covers much more of his personal story, and those of other resistance fighters.

that Corporal Punishment was abolished and death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. I decided to write about this topic because there is little understanding of the “Frontier Wars” between the indigenous people, and the early settlers, and this interesting connection with Bribie Island. There was a thought some years ago that Dundalli could be remembered on a Bank note….

At the Historical Society monthly public meeting this week, Fiona McGill and Peter Lopez gave an excellent presentation about Dundalli’s life and times.

Bribie Island Community Arts Centre

October 5 - 13

“P

rint.ed 2019” shows the original prints of a dedicated group of Bribie printmakers working out of the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, Banksia Beach, Bribie Island. This year’s exhibition has collagraphs, drypoint etchings, linoprints, eco prints, monoprints and gelli plate prints. Printmaking creates original images from a matrix so multiple exact images can be created. The matrix may be a woodblock, linoprint, etching, screenprint or one of many other techniques and combinations of processes. The exhibition will also feature a tribute with

prints from the lino blocks of reknowned printmaker, Jim Aitkenhead, who passed away this year and who bequeathed many of his beautifully cut blocks to the group.

Printmaker/Artist Cheryl Mortimer and some of her prints

Group members will give printmaking demonstrations on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the exhibition. The exhibition will open for viewing from Tuesday 8th October until Sunday 2pm 13th October. The official opening will be in the Matthew Flinders Gallery at 1pm on Saturday 12th October. All are invited to attend.

Busy Fingers SHOPPING BASKETS We often have a bargain known as “fill a basket/bag with clothes”, which is very popular with our customers, but over the last month, some of our customers have taken the basket to their car and have not returned it. We are now down to 7 baskets from the original number of about 28, so if you have one of our baskets can you please return it on your next visit to the shop; the baskets are situated just inside the front door. In future, the cashier will remove all purchases from the basket before you leave the shop. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. BRING YOUR OWN BAG Since the government stopped the use of plastic bags, we no longer receive bags to use in our shop, so in future can you please bring your own bags when visiting us. WASTE LEVY Busy Fingers now has to pay when we go to the Caboolture Refuse Station, these fees mount up and we are required to make sure that we segregate the items into the categories which are also time-consuming. We need to be even more vigilant when we are accepting donations from now on, so please do not bring any mattresses or furniture that are soiled and unable to be sold. We do not like turning people away but from now on, we will have to ask you to dispose of it yourself. Households do not have to pay for some items they take to the dump, whereas businesses including some charities do. VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE We have a very good relationship with the

CHARITY CHRISTMAS BREAK

VMR who do an excellent job of keeping us all safe when out on the water. The volunteers give as much of their spare time as they can and enjoy making lifetime friends while giving back to the community, this is how we also see Busy Fingers, making friends while giving back to our island community. Recently, we were invited to the VMR for a celebration which was arranged by the Commodore Liz Radajewski and others to acknowledge the commitment of one of their volunteers, Peter McNamara. Peter has been involved for quite some time now and is also a member of the committee. Busy Fingers know him as the best Santa on the island as he has been visiting us each December with his Christmas Cheer; he is also a great photographer and has used his skills on many occasions to promote the VMR. As humble as ever, Peter, once he realised Liz was talking about him, acknowledged everyone else in his thank-you speech, claiming that there were many more deserving than him. Congratulations Peter for a job well done and continuing your commitment to VMR with your fellow volunteers who all do a great job. There are many residents on the island who volunteer at one or more of the many associations on the island that give assistance, companionship or just try to enhance the quality of life on the island; it is great to be part of that group. If you have a few hours to give and you want to make friends as well as help the community, check out the many not for profit associations on the island, we could all do with the help.

As Christmas is fast approaching, I thought I would start advising our customers of our Christmas Break this year. We will remain open until 3 pm Tuesday 24th December and will reopen again on Monday 6th January at 8.30 am. During this period our gates will be locked and we will not be accepting any donations over the 12 days. Please remember that the footpath belongs to the council not Busy Fingers, so please do not leave anything on the footpath as this is regarded as dumping rubbish and the council can prosecute those who do. Our security cameras do take in the footpath area, and we wouldn’t like to see any of our customers prosecuted. Our volunteers and staff work very hard throughout the year and we like to allow them to spend quality time with their families over the festive season. We thank you for your cooperation during this time. DONATIONS Recently we have been able to assist several associations on the island including BI Police with awareness promotional items, The Bribie Island Community Kindy with Hats and T-shirts for next year’s students. Surf Club needed to replace two roller doors in their storage area and the High School P&C requested help in installing a new Point of Sale System in the canteen. The Art Centre requires air conditioning for the reception and gallery areas, with a hot summer predicted it will make it more comfortable for the volunteers and visitors. The swim club needed assistance in setting up new swim kits for their young members and we will be supporting the Lions

Camp Quality Picnic with Ice creams. We also continue to support the VMR with fuel and assist the BI Hospice with the Palliative Care Unit and most recently we have set up a support package for the BI Global Care. Without our supporters namely, staff, volunteers, customers and of course the many residents who donate their preloved items to us we would not be able to continue with our support of the island, so we sincerely thank you all. If you require assistanceIf you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance please let us know. We try to assist all not for profit associations and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@ bigpond.com if you wish to have a presentation or if you wish to apply for a grant of assistance. When applying for assistance please include a contact name and phone number and also a current equipment quote, tell us a bit about your association/club and membership and why you need the equipment you are requesting. Please be aware we only deal with island associations and groups, not individuals. Once again, we wish to thank Richard and his family for their continued support, not only of us but also the community, through this great community magazine. Hope to see you in the shop soon. Sandra.

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

THE NOTORIOUS DUCHESS OF ARGYLL

“I don’t exercise or go to the gym, because it’s too boring. But I do believe in another very boring thing - discipline. You don’t go out and eat five cream cakes. I think your stomach knows what you’re going to give it and stays put.” By Helly Kemp

W

ho could have ever believed that a minute celebrity comment in 1986 from the most notorious British Duchess of the 20th Century, Margaret Duchess of Argyll, would affect me to the extent that for decades to come, it will ring with guilt in my ears every single time I treat myself to yet another slice of tiramisu or a third portion of my favourite hazelnut cream dark chocolate. “You know, I’ve always been this slim and I’ve always weighed the same,” explains Her Grace, now in her midseventies, as we enjoy afternoon tea in the silk-lined drawing room of her elegant Grosvenor House apartment in London’s Park Lane.

It is such an unexpected, down to earth comment from the lady who, for several years in the 60’s was dragged through the divorce courts in the most unfavourable ways, when her husband, Ian, 11th Duke of Argyll accused the Duchess of having had 88 lovers. He produced many pornographic photos in evidence, including two famous polaroids at a time when Polaroid cameras were not as yet sold in the 50’s. What of her Grace’s discipline then? And so the fable of the naked headless man and the naked Duchess, except for wearing her pearl necklace, was created and although the headless man was never truly identified, he was rumoured to be either a government minister or Douglas Fairbanks Jr

Margaret Duchess of Argyll in the Argyll v Argyll shots. But all this happening roughly around the time of the infamous Profumo affair with Christine Keeler and also her Russian diplomat lover, catapulted the British Government into the greatest embarrassment ever.

I

n three years time the movie SCANDAL, the fictionalized version of the Profumo affair starring John Hurt will be released in 1989. But for now, I am still getting to terms with the Duchess’ welcoming friendliness, as I have been forewarned that she is quite an ogre. She has been labelled anything from imperious and arrogant, to icy and frosty, from promiscuous and oversexed, to flamboyant and eccentric, from witty and quick-tongued to tough and hard, a gutsy survivor full of airs and graces, who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Surprisingly, the least derogatory of those labels draws her fiercest fire, and yet Margaret’s charisma is all-encompassing, even when anger reddens those alabaster cheeks, her penetrating blue eyes flashing: “The one word I’m not is flamboyant! I am never flamboyant. Never! Not even in my early days did I dance on tables or get drunk. Would you call this dress flamboyant? Of course not. It’s plain and elegant.” The Duchess is still one of the most beautiful and lively women of her age, who can easily pass for a lady 15 years her junior. But I provoke more of the

her wrath, when I mention age, as it is “terribly rude” to discuss it. “Age is unimportant,” she insists. “You can be extremely boring at 19 and great fun at 90. Take Joan Collins – I’ve never met her and I don’t care what age she is. She is fabulous looking. She’s exciting. I hate being bored. I hate to waste time. Time - not age - is so very important. So valuable! Actually, I’m quite hard to bore because I try to dig away and get something from the person, but there are people who are just bores. No, I’m not going to mention names. But spending time with a boring person is such a waste, as you could be doing a million other things.” Tea parties, usually associated with the upper echelon are also anathema. “I hate tea parties – people going out for tea- Ugh! I can’t understand it.

REGULAR FEATURE They take the trouble to get a taxi to go right across London for tea. Why?” Her Grace shudders at the thought, and we discuss what started her bitter image of arrogance and harshness. “Oh, I know,” she confirms. “The newspapers have certainly made me out to be just that. But I don’t mean to give an impression of being snooty or arrogant. I like people. I suppose I’m an extrovert. That is the answer.” Numbered among the world’s best dressed women, ever since she became the toast of London as the most beautiful of debutantes of her ritzy generation more than 55 years ago, and at 19, when the crowds at her first wedding to the most handsome Charles Sweeney were so great that they had to close the roads from Brompton Oratory to Hyde Park corner, Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, has always shown a keen interest in fashion and jewellery. What are her favourites and does she mind what they cost?

It should enhance the wearer and not be admired for itself.” A bouquet of flowers from an admirer arrives at the doorstep and Her Grace excuses herself with “We’ll talk again tomorrow,” to attend to a personal phone call in the library. Looking around the apartment as I leave, I know how Aladdin must have felt when he entered the cave, for the Duchess’ home is like a jewellery box, each exquisite item chosen with care and deliberation, nothing cluttered, nothing overdone – and all in the classical sense that is Margaret Duchess of Argyll’s signature. To be continued in Issue 99, October 25th 2019 Edition. “Of course I mind. I’m a Scot. Suits and coats are worth spending on because they have to fit properly. But often the cheapest off-the-peg dress is the one I love best and wear off my back. I like very classical things, which may sound dull, but they are awfully smart and last forever.”

At the 1960’s court case

With a dramatic thrust of her hand above and behind her head, her spectacular coral ring and matching bracelet accentuating the point, she shows off her immaculately manicured, long, red nails as she continues. “The more classical you are the better. Clothes should frame the woman. You shouldn’t look at the dress. I feel the same about jewellery.

MOVIE REVIEW

RIDE LIKE A GIRL

By Chris Connolly

I

f you thought this was a movie just for female viewers, think again. This is a film about courage and resilience. It is a film about patience and determination. It is a film about an extraordinary family. Played impressively by Teresa Palmer, “Ride Like A Girl” is the story of Michelle Payne who was the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup in 2015. The film is the brainchild of a first-time director,

Rachel Griffiths. Despite her star power, she needed to convince Payne as well as her family that Michelle’s story was one well worth telling and that she would do it justice. The film opens with actual footage of a very young Payne who, even then, aspired to win the Melbourne Cup, a race considered by some commentators, to be the most difficult two-mile race in the world. Despite Payne’s litany of racing fractures, including a near-fatal accident, on a horse given 100-1 odds, she won the race that stops the nation and proved her critics so very wrong. The story, however, is not just about that win. It is also about the influence of Payne’s family; the very special bond Payne formed with her brother, Stevie (played by Steven Payne, himself) and the complicated relationship Payne had with her father, played by Sam Neil. Watch the film and be impressed. Enjoy the actual footage of Payne after her win. Listen to the message she sends to all her critics.

VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE

THANKS PETER MCNAMARA FAREWELL FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2019 5:30PM – A private function was put on by VMRBI Committee Members for Peter McNamara in recognition for his dedication, commitment and willingness to tackle any task required. Wayne Sclater conducted a clandestine operation to keep Peter in the dark about the function, even though Peter was asked to pick up John and Sheryl Traill and have them at the base by 1730pm. Peter’s wife Gwen was in on the arrangements, and contributed information for the evening. Peter and Gwen’s niece Kylie and her husband Kelvin also contributed to the “roast” in providing stories about Peter. Wayne also reiterated that this was a private function funded personally by those present! Apologies to those not invited as it had to be small to ensure secrecy! Peter joined VMRBI some 14 years ago, the last 9 of those on the Management

Committee, he has fulfilled the positions of Radio Operator, Callout radio Operator, Assistant Radio Officer, Unit Radio Officer, Bar Staff, Assistant Baywatch Editor and of course Photographer Extraordinaire! Many of these functions were performed concurrently. Although Peter said of his involvement with Baywatch, “it was different to the TV Series!”

onday 30th September 2019 was Trevor McCormack’s last day on the radio after 16 years volunteering at VMR Bribie Island. Trevor has answered thousands of calls during his time in the Radio room but, says working with the other operators has been the best part. Commodore Liz Radajewski and Vice Commodore Ces Luscombe along with fellow radio operators Peter Morton, Peter McNamara, John Traill and Radio Officer John Bodycombe shared some cake and a few laughs. A HUGE THANK YOU for all your years of service and friendship.

Commodore Liz presents Trevor with his cake and plaque in recognition of his dedicated service.

VISIT FROM RNLI SATURDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2019

Red Saturday had a special visitor yesterday from the UK, Colin Stone who has been a long-time supporter of our Facebook page had mentioned he was visiting so we arranged for him to have a crew day with us here at VMR Bribie Island. Colin is a Governor with the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) and was fascinated to see how we do things this side of the world. Colin didn’t get much rest, the day started with fire pump training and testing, a plan and navigate exercise, towing and be towed exercise, rope skills, radio room, emergency drills but we did stop for a BBQ on the beach thanks to the 66

Fishing REPORT By Vin Donovan

Nothing else comes close to enjoying the beauty of mother nature and her wonderful creatures big or small.

rom the land or in the ocean, from the desolate dry deserts to the islands of the Great Barrier Reef and all those places in between. There are so many unbelievably pristine locations in Australia that need to be looked after and protected to ensure that these areas continue to support life and help the earth cleanse itself of the damage we have caused. Gradually over time with more mining, tree clearing, underground gas/oil extraction,

I mean all these factors affect the instability in the earth’s natural rotation thus increasing the severity and numbers of severe natural weather events that we are seeing at present. The only problem is that it’s going to be near on impossible to get the rest of the world to become more environmentally friendly and to consider the dire consequences that will certainly be felt by all if mother nature isn’t protected on a global level. When you attack mother nature she will come back tenfold and it’s great to see nowadays that more and more people are becoming aware of the problems facing the next generations to come, by standing up and attending the many climate change rally’s happening at present around the world. By joining this movement hopefully, it will bring a lot more people together and realize the problems facing us all.

As the water temperature starts to warm up, so do the summer species. There’s been some beautiful big whiting up in the passage with most sandbanks

Glassed out days at Tangas holding some nice fish. Whiting will feed mainly on the riding tides where they forage the bottom for worms, yabbies’ and small molluscs. Fishing the incoming tide in the passage with live worms, light lines, small whippy light rods should get you a few tasty whiting. Look for sandbanks with deeper gulley’s and tidal eddies where fish will feed. Like most fish whiting respond well with berley. There are hundreds of spots in the passage to chase whiting. Move around every half an hour If the spots aren’t holding fish. Once you find one generally, they will be with other fish. The big duskies are well and truly in spawning mode with most fish over 55cm full of roe. Like Barra and a few other species flathead change sex at a certain stage in life. All fish over 60cm will be female. There’s been a few good mud crabs getting caught and generally, if you get a few muddies at this time of year they are usually always full and big crabs. Sand crabs have also been around, and finally, the weed has almost gone. Anywhere though out the passage

and bay are good places to set your crab pots. Good quality pro pots, fresh bait and a good 24hour soak is the go. Ensure crab pots and floats are correctly marked. The limit is 4 pots per person. If your child can pull a crab pot in then legally, they can run 4 pots as well. Out off the cape the marlin and pelagic’s have just started to turn on, with some great marlin, dollies, hoo, mack’s and tuna showing up. Hopefully, the next couple of months should see the little blacks heading down.

the current forecast for the future of the reef and environment is not looking great.

So, remember “Don’t destroy what you come to enjoy!” September and October means big duskies

Out offshore the close reefs to the cape and Caloundra are holding some nice reefies. So, as we get closer to the best part of the year, get out and enjoy the beautiful great outdoors and discover what a great little patch of the world in which we live. With the current impacts facing mother nature and on a whole these impacts are affecting every person on this earth and it’s about time that you also stood up for her. It will take an extraordinary effort for her to recover from the devastation that humans have caused. And in reality,

Bribie Car Care is a family owned and run mechanical workshop that has been servicing Bribie Island for many years. They also have many specials that offer discounted rates and more deals to keep you happy. They can provide you with a courtesy car available free of charge as one of their customers. They even offer a free local pick up of your vehicle from work or home to enable your servicing experience to be ‘too easy’.

‘Our business is based on customer satisfaction along with all the up to date high

to take care as the track is soft and dry in places and although recent rain has helped, please be VERY fire conscious as it is still tinder dry in areas not burned, there is a total fire ban, a

cigarette butt or even a glass bottle can cause a devastating fire. We are happy that the temperate rain forest area near lighthouse reach remained untouched by the recent fire and the wildlife is teaming. The track from Woorim to the beach is rough and soft as usual so take your time, unfortunately, some do get bogged, the old enemy tyre pressure above 20psi rears its head up far too often, so please be patient and wait until they are out, don’t try to go around them we’ve seen it before, 3 or 4 vehicles wide all bogged, no one is getting out in a hurry and frustration is rampant. The beach has developed a small drop off at high tide so drive careful, on our last tour just up from the northern searchlight there

When driving in the soft sand please allow plenty of time to change track if an oncoming vehicle approaches, you’ll often find your vehicle will not be responsive to changing tracks causing anxious moments avoiding a collision. The second lagoon is very popular and if you want a spot go early, respect the dunes as we are entering the turtle egg-laying season and if you see turtle tracks on the beach please mark the spot (with a ribbon or the like in a tree) and let us or the rangers know ASAP. Enjoy our wonderful national park it’s a privilege, not a right. QPWS Rangers: Bribie Island: 3408 8451. Gateway Discovery Tours 0439 083 868.

ooking towards the 2020 season we need your help. Aside of our fantastic volunteer coaches and team managers, we need volunteers in other areas to keep the show on the road. During the last two Seasons, paid staff have had to be used to do ground maintenance as well as serve in the canteen and bar due to a shortage of volunteers (money that could be used elsewhere). Even if you can only offer a few hours in the whole Season your contribution would be highly valued. We can’t give you a great club without your help. YOUR SAY ‘and YOU ARE INVITED!’ or ‘and YOU’RE INVITED!’

to arrive. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations to the Bribie Island Bowls Club and I found reading their history was very interesting.

Dear Editor,

Tricia Drexel, Godwin Beach.

Rants & Raves Dear Editor, Thank you, Richard and The Bribie Islander, for telling everyone about our need for logs. The response has been great. People have been very generous and through your article we have received a large quantity of dressed timber which will become fine furniture for many people to enjoy. Thank you from Bribie Woodies.

Dear Editor, I can’t understand why there is still is a temporary crossing manned by traffic controllers that have been there for so many months while the underpass is being fixed from the storm, that is costing us taxpayers, hundreds of thousands of dollars? When a normal Zebra crossing which is just up the road works very well without being manned by anyone? Why is this money being wasted? Surely if a crossing like the one 50 metres up the road, was

put there in the first place (and removed when works completed) the cost would be a small percentage of what the temporary one is costing, simply wasting huge amounts of dollars? I estimate the traffic controllers are supplied to Council at around $75 per hour and there has been usually 4 at least (now 2) times this by 12 hours each per person at 7 days a week times the months they have been there, you do the math, it’s a terrible waste of money that could be put to far better use. Larry Godson, Bribie.

Dear Editor, I always enjoy reading the interesting articles and reading about what is happening in our community in the Bribie Islander but I was so surprised to see a spelling mistake in large capitol letters on the front page: ‘and YOUR INVITED!’ should read:

Dear Editor, The old teacher in me must draw your attention to two mistakes – both on your front cover of issue 97. Bowls Club is singular so it is celebrating its 90th Anniversary (not ‘their’) and “your” invited – surely you’re for ‘you are’ invited. Congratulations in your use of the word ‘who’ in the magazine – so far, I have not found the horrible word “that” which is becoming so common especially from those who are lazy with their speech or writing – unfortunately many of these people being in politics and in TV presentation. Cheers, Brian Johnson. Bribie.

Dear Editor, I must admit I chuckled to myself when I read the front page of issue 97 “YOUR INVITED” and thought you must be kicking yourself to miss that one! Sorry! Overall the magazine has come a long way and I thoroughly enjoy reading it, I actually look forward, waiting for the next one

Regards, Sonia Calvo, Banksia Beach.

Just want to thank you for publishing the article in your last publication about the “Moyle Family” on Bribie all those years ago. I have sent copies of your great glossy publication to many of my relations throughout Australia, they are impressed, particularly Peter Phillips from Trebonne in North Queensland who was completely surprised with information on his mother Doris Phillips (Moyle) that he was unaware of. I have recently retired from a career in Television News and Current Affairs in Tasmania, WA, NSW and Queensland to live here on Bribie and I have been very impressed with the work of the Historical Society and the regular articles you publish written by Barry Clark. These are always so different and informative, and I am sure much appreciated by both longterm residents and recent arrivals, such as Myself. The last article was the first time any recognition has ever been given to the Moyles who contributed to so much to the early years of Bribie Island tourism. Thank you, Trevor Sutton.

The kids had a ball sand crabbing in Moreton Bay by Richard Whetlor

Dear Editor, Thank you for producing “The Bribie Islander” magazine which is evolving into the “go to” publication for all things pertaining to Bribie Island. Would your team or readers have any knowledge of the “Blessing of the Surf” event at Woorim this year? The event was NOT held in 2018 but it had been well attended in previous years. I personally would like to see the event return to the Bribie Island events calendar. Unfortunately, I do not know who organised it previously but it was by a retired personality from 4KQ, and some entertainment was provided by the Town Crier, our local Elvis

Parsley and Keith and his ukulele strummers. Hope you can organise some interest. Cheers, Janette Youens, Woorim.

Turmeric

Latte Recipe by Selina Whetlor

Serves 2

1cm root ginger (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger) 2cm root Turmeric (or 1 tsp ground turmeric) 400ml almond or coconut milk (from a carton, not a tin, I like the ones from the fridge dept as they are more nutritious!) Seeds from 2-3 cardamom pods 1 tsp local honey 2 tsp coconut oil 1 pinch ground cinnamon

Peel and grate the fresh ginger and turmeric, (if using ground add this to the milk over ingredients). Gently heat the nut milk in a small pan, then add the cardamom seeds, honey and coconut oil, whisking constantly so the milk heats through and is foamy. Pour the mixture into a cup and sprinkle over the cinnamon and enjoy

Demo Trailblazer LTZ MY19 sold by 30/09/19 and delivered before 31/10/19 unless extended, changed or while stocks last at participating Holden dealers. Includes dealer delivery, stamp duty, 12 months registration and CTP insurance. Excludes prestige paint. Private and ABN buyers only. Not available with other offers. + The Holden Guaranteed Value product (HGV) consists of a loan with a final balloon payment, with an option to return your vehicle to Holden Financial Services (HFS) at the end of the loan term, requiring HFS to purchase the vehicle for an agreed amount as determined by HFS (the guaranteed value amount) equivalent to the final balloon payment. This amount will be applied towards your final balloon payment. At the end of your loan term you can decide to: (A) Return the vehicle to HFS who will purchase your vehicle for the guaranteed value amount (which may be reduced, and you will be liable for any loan contract deficit, if you exceed the nominated kilometre allowance and/or the vehicle is not in an acceptable condition in accordance with the Fair Wear and Tear Guidelines); (B) trade in the vehicle; or (C) keep the vehicle by paying the guaranteed value amount. The guaranteed value amount is not a representation by HFS as to the likely market value of the vehicle as at the end of your loan contract. The option is available on new and approved demonstrator Holden vehicles.
