Sandstone Point will play host to the eighth annual Carols by Candlelight this month with an expected attendance of 2,000 -3,000 people. The event will be held on Saturday December 12 at Sandstone Point Sporting and Community complex, Bestmann Rd. Family fun activities start at 5:30pm with traditional carols starting at 7:00pm. Publicity Co-ordinator, Brooke Savige said it is a free community event that is sponsored by local businesses and organised by volunteers who work tirelessly to provide a fun family day. “We also have a number of performers, Ruby Gilbert, Tammy Mathieson and Stephanie Ross,” Mrs Savige said.

Peebo and Dagwood the clowns will also be keeping locals entertained. Jamie Dunn and Argo will co-host with John Knox and the Uke Dukes will provide musical entertainment while locals wait for a surprise visit from the man in red. “And we have plenty of free entertainers before the carols start with face painting, train rides, roaming entertainers and food stalls,” she said. Carols by Candlelight is organised by Sandstone Point Community Association in conjunction with Bribie Baptist Church. It is also hugely sponsored by Sandstone Point Lions Club and Lions Australia.

PAULWHYTEFORDIVISION1

Division 1 represents - Banksia Beach, Bellara, Bongaree, Donnybrook, Goodwin Beach, Meldale, Ningi, Sandstone Point, Toorbul, White Patch, Woorim and parts of Caboolture and Elimbah.

Hi I’m Paul Whyte and I want to represent you as Councillor for Division One Having lived in division one for 15 years and with over 18 years’ experience in operational management roles with Caboolture Shire and Moreton Bay Regional councils and working with Councillors John Bateman and Gary Parsons I understand what is required to provide quality community infrastructure while maintaining current Council assets. Having gained the experience knowledge and know how to achieve great results for the community. Master planning of suburbs and local areas allows for controlled, sustainable and programmed development and

Construction Area Causing Crashes management and variable message signage were in place to assist motorists during the upgrade. Ms Iselin said “there should have been a traffic controller from the first day”. “At the moment there is only a Give Way sign, I think there should be a Stop sign if there isn’t going to be a traffic controller.” Ms Iselin advises for drivers to take care and avoid the area if possible. A Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesperson said the construction is expected to finish by mid-December, weather permitting. “The upgrade will create a pedestrian and motor vehicle environment that’s similar to many other foreshore areas up and down the Queensland coast,” a spokesperson said. “Like many foreshore areas, particularly during summer, this is a high traffic area for pedestrians - many of whom are visitors to the island, most of whom spend money with local businesses.” “The upgrade will deliver more pedestrian crossing options and a safer traffic environment for all road users.” Have you experienced an accident on this detour route? Do you have something to say about this topic? Write a letter to our editor! (Details pg. 2).

I am committed to a responsive, fair and transparent council that works for and with the community to maintain and improve its lifestyle and services. With your support in the March 2016 Local government elections we can keep Division One a great place to live work and play where lifestyle really counts. If you elect Paul Whyte as your fresh, committed local voice in Council you can be assured of having a person with the skills and expertise necessary to continue providing the community with the facilities they deserve.

As construction in Bongaree along Welsby Parade and Kangaroo Avenue comes close to an end one local is shocked at the rate of accidents she has experienced. Mavis Iselin, who lives along the detour on Bestman Avenue, said she has seen one crash a week on average. But a Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesperson said there has only been two traffic crashes recorded at the intersection of Bestman and Kangaroo Avenue. “The intersection is outside of the construction area,” the spokesperson said. “Investigations indicate the two crashes were unrelated to the construction works and were caused by vehicles ignoring the exsisting give way signage.” “However, Division One Councillor Gary Parsons has asked traffic engineers to investigate if any further temporary safety improvements can be made to the traffic environment in the detour area.” A Project Notice issued by Moreton Bay Regional Council prior to the development said “Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists”. But Ms Iselin said she is yet to see them. A Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesperson confirmed traffic

upgrades. Identifying needs of the community and scoping of intended works by community engagement and consultation is fundamental to good planning and development of council facilities, infrastructure and services

Help for Children of Alcoholics

ALATEEN IS NOW IN CABOOLTURE Al-Anon Family Groups is for families affected by alcohol abuse. It is a refuge from the destructive dependency of alcoholism on family and friends.

The local Caboolture Thursday Night Al-Anon Family Group has now started an Alateen meeting alongside the Al-Anon meeting. Alateen works on the same principles as the 12 Step program of Al-Anon except it is for the children. Isabelle, a young girl affected by alcoholism and a member of the Alateen meetings shares her story:

didn’t say a word. I was scared that I would be judged on what I said during the meeting and would never be able to say what was happening to me at home. I eventually started talking to the other two girls in the group and realised that there dad was exactly the same as mine. I now knew that two other girls were going through the same problem as me at home.

“My dad suffers from a disease which many of others have been affected by; alcoholism. He was an active drinker for as long as I can remember, but with the help of A.A, he became sober in 2010. “I got very scared when he drank and never wanted to invite my friends over. I was worried that when we came home he would be drinking and would scare my friends. I was only young when my dad started drinking, so I didn’t know what he was doing, why he was doing it and if other dad’s acted this way as well. I wasn’t sure if my family was normal or not, until my first Alateen meeting.

I felt so relieved and safe in the meetings. I knew that what was said in the room stayed in the room, so then I started talking about my home and school problems and was so happy to get everything off my chest. “Some of the activities we do in the meetings include reading the steps, good week bad week, Alateen board games, sharing on the daily readings and contributing our ideas. I love sharing my thoughts during the meetings, but most importantly I love listening to other people’s stories and what they think. That is what we learn in Alateen. Not just getting the confidence for us to learn to speak to an audience, but also how to listen to other people speaking to

“It was very nerve wracking and at first when I came to Alateen, I

an audience. We also learn that it is not our fault that the alcoholic is drinking and it is possible for us to find contentment and even happiness weather the alcoholic is still drinking or not. “I am very happy to say that my sister and I attend the weekly Alateen meetings every week, my mum goes to an Alanon meeting once a week and my dad goes to an A.A. meeting at least four times a week to keep his sobriety up. “Alateen has had a great significance in my life and I wouldn’t be the same willing, caring and positive person I am today without the help of the program.” The Alateen meeting is every 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at the Caboolture Community Health Centre, 120 McKean St, Caboolture from 6.15pm to 7.15pm. They also have the AlAnon Meeting at the same venue from 6pm to 7.30pm. Contacts: Tracey: 54976169 Susan: 0428 650 355

Free community event has Moreton Bay wrapped up this Christmas On Saturday the 19th December Sandstone Point Hotel’s Christmas Carnival will come to life and be a great family event not to be missed. Kicking off at 12noon and running until late, there is plenty to get excited about with headlining act MENTAL AS ANYTHING performing live. With Fireworks and the Great Toy Giveaway all scheduled to take place during the event, Sandstone Point Hotel Director Robert Comiskey says he is looking forward to the festive season. “It is a great time to celebrate with family and friends, and throwing a free community event is something we are passionate about. We want to be known as destination rather than just a “pub” and we want to offer our patrons unique experiences. Everything from the Toy Giveaway to the fireworks is our way of putting something special on for families and punters” says Robert. The Christmas Carnival will have market stalls, kids rides, entertainment, food stalls and of course, it wouldn’t be a Christmas Party without the man himself Santa who will be coming along for a visit. T’is the season to be jolly, and what is a Christmas Carnival without carols! All your favourite Christmas carols will be performed by a 30 piece choir and band on stage.

Historic Oyster Farm Re-Opens its Doors

Comiskey says that between the lands great story and amazing location it was a natural progression to bring The Oyster Shed Fish and Chippery to life. “When we bought the land from the Clark Family we wanted to pay homage to its past,” Mr Comiskey said.

The Oyster Shed Fish and Chippery has recently

opened its doors at the iconic Sandstone Point Hotel.

From 1875, the land Sandstone Point Hotel occupies was owned by James Clark who was known as the “Oyster King”. Clark also formed an oyster company farming in Pumicestone

Passage. It was complete with a jetty and oyster shed. Today, the original jetty and oyster shed have been renovated by the Comiskey Family who bought the land off the Clarke family and saw an opportunity to pay homage to the land’s history. The Oyster Shed Fish and Chippery Director, Robert

“As the land was previously occupied as a successful Oyster Farm, we thought it would be fitting to incorporate the original oyster shed and jetty into our plans. “Opening the Oyster Shed Fish and Chippery not only gives us a chance to showcase fresh, local produce and offer something that really compliments the beautiful surroundings and lifestyle of Bribie

Island, but also to bring the history of the land to life. “We also have plans for a floating jetty to make the Oyster Shed Fish and Chippery more accessible for boats in the Harbour out on day trips.” The Oyster Shed Fish and Chippery will be open 7 days from 11am – 8pm.

RICK’S MONTHLY TIP “Enduring Powers of Attorney”

Under Enduring Powers of Attorney there are two distinct parts. One is granting someone Medical Attorney which means they can make decision over things pertaining to your health. The other allows your representative to make decisions pertaining to your financial affairs. This may include the sale or purchase of property, control of bank accounts and the like. A Power of Attorney is highly necessary these days, as Wills are an effective vehicle to deal with your desires once you have departed this life, but if you are unfortunate enough to be in a coma, or become of unsound mind, you need an Enduring Power of Attorney in the hands of a people you trust. Charles Darwin made an extensive study of these plants and described them as being like animals in disguise. There are more than 180 drosera species found all over the world in wet areas. Four varieties grow on Bribie Island. You will almost certainly see Drosera spatulata along the edges of Hornsby Rd on Bribie. At the moment there are no conservation threats to the sundew.

Drosera

Drosera spatulata are very common, perennial plants on Bribie Island. They are carnivorous and grow in poor soil. The plants can be red or green and the flowers are pink and sometimes white, Each spoon-shaped leaf is attached to a central rosette. On each leaf there are numerous tentacles. At the end of each tentacle is a coloured globule which contains nectar, an adhesive

mixture and digestive enzymes. These are attractive to insects and when the insect lands on the leaf it becomes stuck. When it becomes stuck the tentacles very slowly curl over and enfold it. Smaller insects usually drown in the sticky substance while larger ones either suffocate or die trying to escape. The digestion period then begins. The nutrients they obtain from the insects are absorbed into the roots and help the plants grow in poor soil.

Whistling Ducks

By Marj Webber

Plumed Whistling-Duck Wandering Whistling-Duck There are two species of Whistling-Ducks in Australia – the Plumed Whistling- Duck and the Wandering Whistling Duck. Both species are found on Bribie Island. Plumed Whistling-Ducks used to be rare visitors but in the past few years quite large numbers have been congregating at Bellara. Wandering Whistling Ducks appear from time to time at Buckley’s Hole and Bellara but only in very small numbers. In Australia both species are found in Northern and Eastern Australia. In the past they were only found in Northern Australia but since the 1950’s floods they began to migrate south and are now found all along the East coast. Wandering Whistling ducks are not present in Victoria. Plumed Whistling-Ducks are long necked with light brown and chestnut feathers and long cream plumes along their flanks. It is easy to distinguish between the two species as the Wandering Whistling-Duck is darker with less conspicuous flank feathers and has a black stripe on the top of the head. During the day Plumed WhistlingDucks stay close to water, usually

in large numbers but at night fly out to feed on grasslands. They also include water plants in their menu. Wandering Whistling-Ducks feed mainly in the water and fly great distances to find deep wetlands where they can feed on water plants and insects. One duck which was banded in Townsville was found to have flown as far as Leeton in NSW. They will also feed on irrigated lands and pastures. Both species are monogamous. Both help to build their nests, incubate their white oval eggs and look after their broods. They breed in the wet season. While they are roosting, flying or feeding there is a continuous whistling sound. Both species have a similar call. Conservation status is secure.

XMAS WITH YOUR DOG

By Yvonne Bishop

HOW TO HAVE AN ENJOYABLE CHRISTMAS WITH YOUR DOG

Christmas is nearly upon us. For most it is a busy time of year and our usual routine with dogs goes out the window.

Spare a thought for your pet. Try to keep to a routine as much as possible, as it helps to keep him calm. You may have visitors staying and going out more often, and, or the dog may be spending more time outside. It would help to teach him before they arrive. You may be putting up a Christmas tree. If your dog is still in puppy chewing stage then location of the tree is important. Putting it in a room where doors can be shut or even placing the tree in a playpen can be a safe option otherwise the puppy may have a great time getting into the tinsels and baubles etc. This also goes with Christmas gifts, your puppy may think all those gifts are for him. Be even more vigilant if some of the gifts are chocolates because they can be fatal to a dog if eaten. Page 14

Buy gifts that are appropriate for your dog as they are less likely to be destroyed or cause harm. There are now so many home alone toys on the market to choose from. If you do choose human type toys then check label if it’s not safe for a child under three then it won’t be safe for your dog. Christmas lunch – most of the food we eat at this time of year is not suitable and can be fatal to your dog. I’ve already mentioned chocolates, but also Christmas Cakes with sultanas and raisins is toxic. Dogs can choke on nuts and lollies. Christmas ham and bone can cause Pancreatitis in dogs which can be fatal. Never give cooked bones to a dog. Please tell your dog not to attack Santa Claus when he comes during the night as he is not a thief!! Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Happy training Yvonne

Pet Care

by Dr Jackie the Vet

Yikes! That’s a BIG snake…and it’s got my CAT!!!! a “battle rope”, forcing it to let go. Alex was dazed and terrified, with multiple bites to the belly. Rachel literally saved the life of her cat with her quick, targeted moves. Rachel phoned the local snake catcher who removed the snake. Being a native animal it is not lawful to kill it. Alex the cat was likely to develop brain swelling due to being deprived of oxygen for a time, and I treated him for this, and for the bites.

Cats and small dogs are at risk of becoming the next meal for a python. That nearly happened to poor Alex, the cute Devon cat who made a narrow escape because of his “Mum”, Rachel of Bootcamps personal trainers Bribie. (see picture of Alex, Kirah & Dr Jackie) Rachel was working out in her backyard in Sandstone Point, when her daughter Kirah noticed that a 2-3M long python was constricting their beloved cat Alex!!! A few more moments and Alex would be a bump inside the snake’s belly!! There were not many seconds to act to save Alex, and Rachel confided to me that she is phobic of snakes! Still in work-out mode and psyched, Rachel grabbed the snake by the tail and swung it like

What an amazing and true story about how love for a pet and physical fitness can overcome even a deep fear of snakes. Contact Bootcamps Bribie on 0418 772 081 for personal training and to learn that handy “battle rope” move!

Painfree & Healthy in 2016 In 2009, Leanne Halpin was living in Central Queensland with her young family. She was already a qualified Remedial Massage and Bowen Therapist, running a clinic from home providing professional treatment to the small population of Tieri. Leanne had been drawn to Oncology Massage after reading an article in a massage newsletter. Until this point, massaging people with cancer was contra indicated because it was thought that the treatment would spread the cancer. Thankfully, due to research undertaken in America we now know this is not the case. Oncology Massage provided by a qualified Oncology Massage Therapist is safe, gentle and nurturing. Assisting in the reduction in symptoms such as pain, anxiety, depression, nausea and fatigue. “We make cancer suck less” Leanne travelled from Tieri, to Frankston in Victoria, Canberra and Sydney to complete her training which culminated in working as part of the medical team , at the Sydney Adventist Hospital Oncology Ward and Chemotherapy infusion unit.

“I remember one particular gentleman who had tumours in his stomach, his abdomen was distended and he was in a lot of discomfort. I spent 20 minutes gently applying the Oncology massage techniques that I had been taught to his back and gentle holds on his abdomen. After a very honest conversation , he fell asleep and to my surprise his wife did also. A lot of times, the carers are forgotten. A cancer diagnosis doesn’t just affect the patient, it takes a huge hold on the family, especially the primary carer.” Oncology massage can be administered at any time from diagnosis, a treatment contract is made with the client each visit, taking into account their general wellness, stage of treatment, surgical sites and medical devices such as ports, colostomy bags and stomas. Oncology massage is beneficial for those who are living with any life limiting illness, it doesn’t have to be cancer. Conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and lupus also respond well. Leanne now operates a home based clinic at Banksia Beach, Wellness on Kakadu. Monday to Friday by appointment

This is where Leanne saw the true benefit of Oncology Massage.

SWAY AND INNER ROOM

Following their last successful venture, Sway and Inner Room are recombining for a pre Christmas Fashion Parade. The feedback from customers after their last parade was very positive said Lisa “Seeing the clothes actually worn by the models gives the customers a better idea of how the clothing looks and what will suit them”. With all the new summer ranges now in store the timing couldn’t be better! Fashion highlights by Sway include Mosaic in 100% comfort cotton, Clarity, Sunnygirl and La Strada in gorgeous colours and fabrics, and fabulous Brisbane designed Louenhide handbags. Complement these with a great range of jewellery and colourful beads and you have the complete outfit! Inner Room will show the ever popular, ultra soft Wyse Holiday range and Tani basics made from recycled beechwood.

An exciting range of clothing called Tonle from Cambodia also features - these are hand made from recycled remnants and off cuts destined for waste. The two shops definitely complement each other! To top it off, the fabulous Village Deli are having a Food Tasting day from 10am with many suppliers offering delectable goodies and gourmet foods to sample including curries, dressings and gluten free products - yum!

Mon: 10am -2.30pm Tues - Fri: 9.30 am - 3pm Sat: 9.30 am - 1pm Closed Sundays and public holidays, except during holiday season.

0413 069 160

The Fashion Parade will commence at approximately 11 am and attendance is open to all. Included are clothing discounts, free refreshments, door prizes and lucky give aways. This promises to be a fun day out and we hope to see you there!

“Pattern and Texture”, was the theme for October’s meeting and was won by John Cupper with an upward looking shot of “Balconies”. Ron leHuray’s lovely waterlily titled “Blossom” was the winner in the open colour projected image section. Gordon Bentzen took out the mono print with an action shot of “Brolga in Flight” “Little Rock Island” was Vince Bowser’s winning shot in the mono projected images. Marj Webber’s photo of an 8 mm “Long Legged Fly” won the open colour print category. At the meeting this month Ron leHuray conducted a very instructive workshop on aperture and depth field. Members brought their cameras along and participated in experimenting with different aperture settings. It’s pleasing to see new members coming along to our meetings. New members are always welcome. We meet in the Board Room at the Arts Centre, Sunderland Drive on the fourth Monday of each month from January to November at 7 pm. There is no meeting in December. The first two meetings are free. Just come along or ring Gordon or Gail. Gordon – 3410 1279, Gail – 3408 – 9850 bribiephotographyclub@gmail.com

Continues to provide choice and variety in it’s program

The Centre hosts a variety of theme days, entertainers and social activities every month of the year but November and December are particularly busy and packed with a wide range of choice for our clients. Our Melbourne Cup luncheon was a great day enjoyed by the many who attended. In December we are hosting a range of Xmas activities commencing with our annual Xmas party to be held at the Bribie RSL and the month will finish off with our Centre Xmas Lunch. Our regular events on the calendar continue through-out November and December including Bingo, Wii Nintendo, Knitting and craft Groups, Floor golf, bowls and darts, card games and computer games. Each Tuesday an exercise class is held for our older guests while our young people have

music, drama and dance classes twice each week. Our Carer Support Group meets on the Third Wednesday of every month and is a great opportunity for carers to meet up with others and have a well-earned break from their role as Carer. The Centre provides group social activities for those over 65 years, those who have dementia specific needs and younger people with a disability aged between 18 & 65 years. Transport is available to and from the Centre if you live in Ningi, Sandstone Point, Godwin Beach or on Bribie Island. We welcome your enquiries by phoning 3408 2112 Mon-Thur 8.30am - 4.30pm and speak to Coordinator Jo Allison-Schouw to discuss our program.

If you would like to enquire about the services provided by the Centre please contact the Co-ordinator on 3408 2112 Page 18

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN Greetings to all the Bribie Islanders and our wonderful visitors. Have you been feeling the Summer tropics of late? Aye, ‘tis a good thing we’re surrounded by boundless ocean extravaganza. May all who come to sit amidst the beauty of this special part of the earth this holiday season be filled with hope and wonder for the new year. So last month we pondered upon the topic of virtue: holding yourself and the company you are in with honour. It has certainly been on my heart lately to go deeper into this topic, especially for young men and women, as we embark on the journey of life. I believe understanding self-worth is integral to escaping a few battle wounds and well, embarrassments, along the way... particularly when it comes to love. Young love is a fascinating thing. It is simply wonderful and frankly, quite scary. Scary that is however when one does not know how to guard their hearts with virtue. So how does it work? When someone believes in honouring themselves and the company they are in, a certain standard of morale is set. I suppose you could call it a ‘code of conduct’. In last month’s issue I used the diamond ring example to explain the significance of this. Summarised the analogy was: that it would be only right for a weighty diamond ring, in all its value and beauty, to be set in a metal complimenting of its worth. When you have something of high worth, you treat it the best way possible. Therefore honouring not only your heart but the other person’s heart in a relationship of any kind is the key to keeping yourself

safe from many kinds of emotional ouchies. No achy-breaky hearts here please! So let’s get practical. You want love? You want somebody to call your own? Amen to that sister! But it isn’t just anybody who gets to have your heart. The person for you is the person who understands your heart so much that they hold it in such a way as to protect it. They are forever to be your heart guardian. What a privilege. Indeed such a blessed union comes at a price that both parties must pay. A price of time, both in vigorous training and self-control but all the while worth it. Let’s begin. Number one. You must understand

By Nikita Chee that you are worth the best. How you think of yourself will draw like-minded people to you. Number two. Surround yourself with and seek advice from wise people who are experienced in the realm of good relationships and ask lots of questions! Number three. Keep accountable. Let people who are close to you and that you trust in on what’s going on. Their honesty and genuine care can save you those ouchies later on. Number four. Remember that less is more (that’s for pretty much everything apart from clothing). Number five. No is the new yes! Boundaries have always been there for our own protection, not for stealing fun. Number six. Time is

Being a lady or gentlemen, that is being a person of virtue, in a modern world has become something of an art form, though however much the cost it is to strive for such a thing is overcome by the prize of such a thing. The prize of a guarded heart. Too little do we know about how to protect this vital organ, henceforth my endeavour to increase my own personal understanding of this matter and share it with as many as I can. There is a code of conduct for courting and its way is the way of success. And love. Until next time. Stay classy!

Nikita

Men Can Survive Menopause

Menopause is a hormonal condition that give women Superpowers , so here are a few pointers to men so they can live safer and happier lives when they find they are suddenly living with MENOWOMAN.

The room is NOT too cold! One minute Menowoman is sitting next to you wearing five layers of clothes, sipping her latte and laughing, the next her lips curl back into a snarl as she produces enough thermal energy to melt both polar icecaps. As she rips layers of clothing off, her skin drips and her face flushes. This removal of clothing is not an invitation, any man attempting an amorous movement now will have limbs ripped from his body and put somewhere requiring a search to find. Any mention of her redness, as she sweats like a sumo in a sauna, are guaranteed

to reduce your lifespan. Menowoman becomes even hotter at night! Seemingly storing the suns energy to release it in bed. As ice caps melt, she is awake wondering why a few months ago she could joyfully go to sleep, but now she hears every noise and sleep is something only vaguely remembered. Unfortunately for the man asleep next to her, sleeping is seen as being done purely out of spite, to make matters worse he is breathing as loud as a jumbo jet, obviously on purpose.

as everything she eats stays attached to her middle! Food once loved is now the enemy and mirrors are an object of terror. Menowoman will expand just by dreaming of bread and if you are foolish enough to buy her chocolate it will be your fault that her clothes no longer fit. For this you will be punished with the answerless question “does this outfit make me look fat?” Never, Ever, answer this question with “no more than any of your other outfits.“

Breathing out by him is particularly annoying and she may attempt to hinder this process with pillows or pegs. To survive the night it is best to remember he now sleeps next to someone with anger management control issues akin to the incredible hulk and the ability to heat the room to 1000o, in the end he must ask himself is breathing out necessary?

But do not despair men, you can survive this period of having a superheated short tempered sumo wrestler with attitude as a loving partner. Yes! The answer is right there in Menopause! PAUSE before you speak! PAUSE before you ask a question! Do you really want the answer? And finally Pause before you breathe, stop and consider is breathing something that you really need to be doing…….

Never offer food as a sacrifice to Menowoman,

Conscious Living

SURVIVE MENOPAUSE

Saucha & Santosha : Clean & Content This month as Christmas draws rapidly nearer we take a look at the first 2 of 5 Niyamas or observances on the yogic path – Saucha and Santosha. Saucha can be translated as cleanliness and Santosha as contentment, so how can we relate their deeper meanings to our life at this time, a time when many of us might be feeling very ‘end of year-ish’ and perhaps starting to think about preparations for family or friends gathering over the holidays? Sadly, all too often I hear people talking about the dread they feel with the upcoming festive season, the pressure of expectations to be met. Keeping things clean can also mean keeping things simple, to create space for what we really want to feel or experience. Clutter or mess in any form…physical or mental can give us the feeling of being overwhelmed and not knowing where to start. Each of our life situations are different, but we can cultivate Santosha even in busy or trying circumstances by creating a gratitude practice, taking a step back and giving thanks for what we have right NOW - the opportunity to BE in nature, living in peace rather than a war zone, having shelter, loved ones ….take some time each day to be sincerely grateful for 3 things in your life and watch the feeling of contentment blossom within you. Ask yourself what your perfect Christmas holiday experience would be if you didn’t fulfil all the ‘shoulds’ in your head, what vision of Christmas creates a feeling of calm and contentment…and does this version differ from what you may have planned? Life is certainly a balancing act, but if we don’t attempt to honour our own needs first then we are unable to truly be there for others without diminishing ourselves. As the self-realised yogi Sri Yukteswar once said “If you think you are enlightened, go and spend the weekend with your family” …it can be true that those dearest to us are the ones capable of pushing all our buttons! So with that

your friend, getting to know someone over a long period of time and over different circumstances is a sure fire way of maintaining good friendships. Number seven. Be strong and stay true to yourself!

After 40, women lose up to 5% of muscle mass per decade, and the decline increases to 2% per year after age 50. Muscle keeps you strong, it burns calories and helps you remain toned and healthy, and it contributes to balance and bone strength. Without it, independence and mobility can be lost.

Then it’s the Papyrus cards which are a very fine selection of hand crafted cards for most occasions, beautiful to touch and look at, you are really spoiling someone if you purchase one of these, they are top of the range and retail around $8-10 bucks, which I thought is cheap considering the work and detail that goes into them. There are lots of gifts on the shelves too for the festive season.

Then there are folders and binders, coloured arts and crafts papers, round to the left you come to the massive selection of magazines, seriously?? Come and have a look at this selection, it’s amazing to know that there are this many magazines in one place to choose from!

Beautiful handmade cards, top notch! Cheapest printer cartridges around!

Then another row of magazines! Wheels, Motors, Motorcyclists, planes, cars, rodding, extreme engine, utes, custom trucks, 4 wheel drive, caravan and trader, guns and game, they have got every single magazine you could ever wish to read!

A fine selection of gourmet choccies mmmmm yum! More and more!! Ross said ‘When out shopping you want to go into somewhere where its nice and clean, bright, not where the lights are turned off and its dull. So we have invested back into the shop again for the next 5 years to achieve this’ He also said ‘The problem we had Richard was the counter was oval and if you stood in line, someone could walk to to the other side and get served, it wasn’t right. Now everyone gets served in turn and quickly, we have 3 or 4 counter staff to achieve this and we now serve over a 1000 customers a day! We are also ranked in the top 10 of newsagents in Queensland’

Ross maintains that to keep in the top 10 he focuses on great customer service and thanks his loyal customer base.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS

Then you come round to the far left wall where there are more Christmas gifts, again, you must come in and see the range of big and small presents, crystal and glassware, there seems to be a very big selection of everything!

now looking at expanding the boundaries to produce more wine. Champagne was initially produced as a still wine and a Benedictine monk named Dom Pierre Perignon was at the forefront of making the wine. He was a strong advocate of using only Pinot Noir grapes and worked very hard to produce a wine without the bubbles that formed when some residual sugar and dormant yeast in the bottles was exposed to warmth when the wines were being exported to England in the summer. It was The English who saw the bubbles as desirable and it was an English scientist Christopher Merret who worked out that the presence of sugar and yeast in a wine before bottling it would lead to it become sparkling which suggests that British merchants were producing sparkling Champagne before the French did it deliberately. Once The French aristocracy developed a taste for this sparkling wine Champagne houses opened up to satisfy this new craze in Paris restaurants and Champagne producers switched from making still wine to the sparkling version and in the 1850’s production was around 20 million bottles per year. In 1854 the French national railroad system was linked to Rheims in the Champagne region which led to the French ports and sales grew out of sight. Champagne is synonymous with any form of celebration, weddings, funerals, winning wars, a successful flutter at the races, car races and even breakfasts, it is truly wine for all occasions. First the wine should be served cold at around 5 to 8 degrees centigrade and although shaking the bottle and allowing the cork to project into the air looks fun it is very dangerous and worse still a waste of good wine. To prevent the cork from exploding from the bottle hold the bottle firmly in one hand whilst turning the cork slowly with the other, the gas will start to force the cork out and when you hear the sigh of bubbles you know you have achieved opening the bottle properly. Serve the wine in flutes and only ¾ full to allow the lovely aroma of yeast to escape from the tiny stream of bubbles and the experience will begin. I notice Mercier Champagne is now available in

Australia, it is a beautiful wine which we came across some years ago in Epernay. The House of Mercier is situated at the end of The road of Champagne Houses and is quite a superb building. Inside the foyer is a massive barrel made for The Paris Exhibition of 1889 which held 200,000 bottles and took 24 bullocks to drag it across reinforced bridges to the exhibition. It came in 2nd place at the judging to another remarkable French creation The Eiffel Tower. Under the winery are 18 kms of tunnels in which the Champagne is stored and access is by a glass lift, if you are ever in the region make sure this is on the list of visits. Currently expect to pay between $30 for house brands and $300 plus per bottle for Krug or Dom, however look at the deals around and a good quality Piper Heidsieck, Mumm, Veuve, or Moet can be found for under $50. Recommendations. Mercier Perrier Jouet Veuve Cliquot Moet Chandon Piper Heidsieck A good alternative is Domaine Chandon an Australian Sparkling wine which is part of The Moet Group. Cheers Philip Arlidge Mark Twain is quoted as saying: Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right.

FISHING BRIBIE

By Vin Donovan

So Christmas is almost here once again. That means a couple of things, warm water and quick changing weather patterns. If heading out over the next couple of weeks make sure you monitor the weather patterns and storm fronts that will be most certainly coming through. Also, make sure your vessel is in a seaworthy condition and complies with all current marine park regulations and restrictions. As the authorities will be and should be policing the waterways and canals. Anyway, now back to the fish. There are some good summer whiting showing up in the usual spots. Woorim beach, the passage and Godwin beach would be a good place to start. The jacks have well and truly started smashing lures and live baits in the Ningi, Elimbah, Meldale and Coochin creeks. The Bribie Bridge is

holding a number of species at the moment. The main problem is the strong run. Bottom or top of the tides work best. Flatties getting caught throughout the entire passage, with some absolute monsters among them. If over 75 cm take a photo and release them back safely. Lures pillys and live baits are the pick, a nice run of early muddies for Christmas found in all the local creeks and passage keeping in mind size and bag limits. Plenty of bait fish in the bay which means tuna and mackerel, jigging the beacons and sight casting at schools would be the bet. Kingfish, dolphin fish, Spanish mackerel, Wahoo, Marlin and the odd sailfish will be making their way down the coastline as we speak. Trolling lures, skirts and live/skip baits will be the best. Also consider live bait drift fishing out between the 40m to 100m line off the coast.

pelagic most days. The current will be a problem, coral trout red emperor, nannagi and red throats have also been a lot more common down this way. Slow drifting along contour lines and reef edges should be a definite option over the next couple of months. Anchoring up on a nice patch of reef and berley hard, floating down pillies, cut baits and livies will produce quality fish. Inside of the bay is holding some really nice snapper ( pictured below ) Cobia and big reef jacks. The ledges, wrecks. Quality GT, kings and Spanish Mackeral from the reefs, headlands and shoals. Anyway keep an eye on the weather , stay safe and alert out at sea, follow all marine park restrictions and have a great safe Christmas and new year.

Tight lines to all, keep a bend in them rods over the break.

The offshore reefs will be holding plenty of quality table fish and
