What’s happening In the Budget April 2016, the government proposed a new levy on soft drinks that contain added sugar. This levy applies to the production and importation of soft drinks containing added sugar. The proposals will be implemented in April 2018. It’s purpose is to encourage consumers to change behaviour through a broader range of low sugar choices & RSP differentials.

Free-to-use ATMs could be under threat THERE ARE proposals currently being considered meaning access to free-to-use ATMs is under threat. Under the proposals, the level of an interchange fee, which is paid by card issuers to fund free-to-use cash machines, may be reduced from 25p to 20p per cash withdrawal. “Free-to-use cash machines support not just the businesses that house them, but also other shops, markets and small businesses that still rely on cash for payment. Reducing interchange fees, payable by

banks for their customers to use these facilities, could lead to some cash machines being removed from local shops,” said ACS Chief Executive James Lowman. “We urge Link to think carefully about the consequences of the ATM network shrinking.” To highlight the issue, Chair of the Treasury Committee Nicky Morgan MP has written to the chair of the UK’s largest cash machine network Link, to seek assurances on the accessibility of cash machines across the UK.

Retailers facing rising wage costs Following the chancellor’s decision in November’s budget to increase the National Living Wage to £7.83 next April, retailers are being advised to consider how they will absorb rising wage costs. He also accepted the Low Pay Commission’s advice for other minimum wage rates to apply from April 2018. This announcement serves as the largest increase in youth rates in 10 years.

Changes to Lottery lead to more chances to win Camelot will launch EuroMillions HotPicks and introduce a Tuesday Thunderball draw in January, creating extra opportunities for retailers every week. To support the launch, Camelot is giving independent retailers the chance to win a

share of £50,000: 20 retailers will walk away with £1,000 while two retailers will win £5,000 and one lucky retailer will scoop £20,000. EuroMillions Hot Picks is a variation on the existing Lotto HotPicks game, played on the same days as EuroMillions. It

Scottish convenience shopping on the rise A new report has found that convenience shopping has increased across both cities and towns in Scotland year-on-year since 2013. The report on Scottish retail and leisure, released by Local

Data Company and the Institute for Retail Studies – University of Stirling, also found that independent retail in cities has grown from 54% to 57% since 2013 while towns have grown from 53% to 55% over the

same period. Edinburgh and Perth are the cities with the highest percentage of independent retail at 69% and 67% respectively, according to the report.

Food-to-go In the know fund for retailers The Scottish government has announced a new £150,000 capital investment programme to help independent retailers to introduce food-to-go stations. The fund will provide small grants to retailers, covering 50% of the cost of new equipment and displays in order to help retailers remain competitive. Rural economy secretary Fergus Ewing said, “Stores are having to adapt and innovate to continue to meet changing consumer behaviours. One such way of doing this is through the introduction of food-to-go stations which entices customers into the store and

or as long as I can remember, politicians have looked for new ways to regulate tobacco and alcohol, and more recently sugar and other foods. Some of my friends in the industry argue that government shouldn’t concern itself with these products and the retailers who sell them. Actually, I don’t agree. We should expect governments to think about regulatory interventions to limit the harm caused by these substances and, setting aside the jobs we do and shops we run, don’t we as citizens expect our leaders to think about how to reduce this harm? To me, the question is about how it is regulated. What works and how is it properly targeted and proportionate to the specific problems?

I was pleased to see that the UK Government has concluded that some measures they’ve recently considered aren’t actually warranted at this time. Specifically I’m talking about the proposals to restrict in-store siting and promotions of alcohol, and to introduce a licensing system for tobacco, both of which have been priorities for ACS in our lobbying work. The promotional restrictions on alcoholic drinks are already in place in Scotland but the impact of these measures has been limited because they don’t target problem drinkers who trade down to cheaper brands and who know full well where alcohol is available. I’m pleased that the Home Office isn’t going down this route in England, allowing retailers to offer and promote good deals to customers. HMRC’s decision not to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers is also welcome. We know that the alcohol licensing system brings costs and bureaucracy for retailers and there are already measures in place to stop retailers who sell illicit products, or who serve underage customers, from selling tobacco. A licensing system wouldn’t have achieved anything for society or public health, it would just have brought more regulatory costs for local shops. The ongoing debate about how to balance the regulation of the products we sell will continue to be high on our agenda as ACS, and these two decisions are important achievements.

Promotional bays are the ideal platform to showcase the great offers and discounts you have on products. Make them eye-catching with bold signage so it’s easy for customers to see your value and to shop quickly. In addition, use clear markers to highlight products on promotion on your shelves.

There’s more to value than price alone. Are you serving every customer with a smile? Are you creating in-store theatre around key seasonal events to give customers a fun shopping experience? Are you offering additional services, such as home delivery, PayPoint, dry cleaning, or parcel drop-off and collection? Do you always provide good availability of products, especially the key items your shoppers visit your store for? Do you offer in-store tastings of new products or seasonal items? Does your store have permanent promotional bays? These are all things to think about and are easy to implement, if you’re not already doing them. A sure-fire way to offer value is to provide a service that shoppers can’t get elsewhere.

of shoppers claim they’d be more likely to buy a new product if it was sold as a PMP It may sound simple, obvious maybe, but the fact is that shoppers appreciate high standards of service and are much more likely to shop with you again if you offer a better experience than your competitors. Treat every customer as if they are the most important person. It’s vital to encourage your staff to follow your lead and provide the same great service. As well as providing excellent service you could consider rewarding customers’ loyalty and encourage repeat purchases through a loyalty programme – it only needs to be as simple as stamping a card every time a customer spends above a set limit and then rewarding them with a free item or voucher when they reach 10 stamps. Or look at a digital offering such as Zapper, which offers mobile payment with a built-in loyalty card. Also consider what to do and the service to offer when things don’t go according to plan. For example, if a product that a customer wants is out of stock you could offer to contact them to let them know when it’s back in stock or, at the very least, talk to a customer about an alternative product so they know you care about their

shopping experience. Always ask for your customers’ feedback and then show them you’ve acted on it. Customers really value retailers offering them expert advice on topics such as healthy eating or vaping. This can transform your relationship from just being an efficient transaction to a friendly, one-stop-shop service.

think differently

Think beyond the in-store experience to providing value online too, in the form of a website or Facebook page that shouts about your promotions and prices but also offers content such as how-to guides on issues customers will find useful and interesting. You could go so far as to involve your customers by asking them to share their favourite recipes or advice. Make your store an invaluable part of the community by sharing updates on local events, fundraising, family activities, or even the weather forecast (and link it to products such as a BBQ line on a hot day). If you can implement some if not all of these, then you will get the new year off to a flying start.

‘I’ve been in retail for more than 40 years – it runs through my blood’ For store manager Rose Rickett, going above and beyond for customers is the very least she can do to ensure her store stands out from the rest

I

t wasn’t long after Rose Rickett moved back to the UK after spending 20 years owning a mini-market and restaurant in The Gambia, Africa, that she stumbled across a florist in the midst of being transformed into a brand-new Lifestyle Express in Walsall, Birmingham. One phone call to the store owner later and, just like that, her second retail adventure was born. Four months later, the new Lifestyle Express store on Birmingham Road in Walsall is open for business, and store manager Rose is enjoying every step of the process: “I was just getting off the bus one day when I happened to see that my local florist was being renovated and an advert was stuck to the window. I contacted Salah Sedawi, the shop owner, and I’ve been on board

with the team ever since. I absolutely love it!” When Salah was planning the store, Lifestyle Express was the immediate choice. “Lifestyle Express is very well known in the area,” said Rose. “It’s a very good, reputable company and we’ve had a great experience with them and the team has been hugely supportive. I’m not great with technology, and so it’s great to have them on the end of a phone whenever I have a problem or a question about the till, for example. They were also on hand to help us with the setting up of the store and the layout. often with fantastic deals.” After Salah opened the store, he handed over the day-to-day management to Rose and the third member of the team, Joe (pictured below right), as he spends a lot of time out of the country: “Salah spotted an opportunity to open a store, but as he is often based abroad and doesn’t have much retail experience himself, he thought it was best to leave the everyday running of the shop to Joe and myself. It’s great to have that level of trust, and he’s always on the end of a phone should we have any questions. “I’ve been in retail for more than 40 years – it runs through my blood. I really enjoyed running my own mini-market and restaurant in The Gambia, but I’ve really embraced the challenge of helping to open a brand-new store. “We’re not completely up and running yet and some things take a little while to get going when you first open a store, such as our off-licence approval from the local council, which we’re expecting to receive just before Christmas. This is exciting, as we hope that once we get this we’ll also take on an extra member of staff which will help us grow as a company.”

Rose enjoys finding the niche in the local market and always looks for new and innovative ways to improve the store’s offering to best suit the local community – such as preparing freshly baked bread to order: “There are a couple of small convenience stores nearby, so we constantly make sure we offer something slightly different to them. We’re the only store in the area that serves hot food and baked products. “We spotted an opportunity for a bakery about a month after we opened, and so we converted part of our store room to make space. There’s nothing quite like the scent of freshly baked bread to greet customers as they walk through the door, and we now have a system where people can make orders each day. For example, staff from local offices may ask for freshly baked bread at 11am, so I will make it in the morning ready for them to collect. We do the same for

lunch orders on our pastries and it’s really taking off. Nowhere else in the area offers this service, and we always get great feedback from customers.” She doesn’t just stop at freshly made bread, either. Rose also spotted a gap in the market for freshly prepared fruit trays, and put her mind to the task: “We have a lot of elderly customers who don’t necessarily want to buy huge bags of fruit from the local supermarket, so every couple of days I prepare small fruit trays with an individual selection, which are selling really well.”

GO THE DISTANCE

For Rose, it’s all about helping the customer every step of the way: “We’re blessed for every customer that walks in that door, and I just want to make the experience as pleasant and helpful for them as possible. We keep a pad by the counter, and I make sure to write down every request I receive. “When we first opened, a few customers commented that they wished we had an ATM machine as the closest one was a 20-minute walk away. To combat this and help them out, we installed a

So, it’s a win-win solution for both the customer and us!” When she was visited recently by a local schoolchild who wanted to buy a birthday cake but found that Rose didn’t stock any that were big enough, Rose went the extra mile and told the boy to come back at 1pm. In the meantime, she popped out and bought the perfect cake for his friend from her local wholesaler: “It wasn’t much for me to do it, and it really meant a great deal to him. He was so grateful and said that he would tell all of his friends to visit the store. ➥

top tip Nothing beats great customer service. Be grateful for every single customer that walks through your door and show them that you value their custom and that you want to make their shopping experience as good as can be.

“It all comes down to delivering the sort of customer service you would hope to receive yourself. I always say that I like to treat the customers how I like to be treated when I go shopping, so I keep this in mind every day. I also think there is something beautiful about the old-fashioned way of doing things, so I try to always say good morning or afternoon to people as they come in and thank them for visiting. It’s about not only giving the customer what they want, but also what they don’t expect.” Unsurprisingly, taking part in the local community is really important to Rose: “Supporting the community is definitely something I want to get more involved in as the store finds its feet. We sponsored a local school who hosted a pensioners party at Christmas and provided them with a hamper from the store as a raffle prize. We also have a charity pot on our till which customers tend to put their pare change in. This has already raised almost £100 in the short time we’ve been open which is amazing.” So what are Rose’s plans for the future? “We are looking forward to kick starting our delivery service, which we have already had great interest in. We just want to find our feet and keep growing – the sky is the limit.”

t age 13, a young Kiefer Shae-Godden was inspired to one day open his own shop by the local man he delivered newspapers for. So inspired, in fact, that eight years later at the age of just 21, Kiefer bought his very first Lifestyle Express store from the same man that inspired him. Three years down the line, 24-year-old Kiefer now owns two Lifestyle Express stores and has huge plans for the future. “It was the way he ran the store,” Kiefer explained when asked why the retailer who owned the local convenience store was such an inspiration. “He ran three shops, had a family and yet still took the time to be polite and friendly to every single customer that walked through the door. I remember admiring how under control everything was and how comfortable he made everyone feel. I just really looked up to him, I guess. I thought that maybe one day I could do that and from then on I dreamt of being my own boss. own business. He was just 21 years old when he saw that the same store he delivered newspapers for as a teenager was up for sale. He spoke to the retailer who supported him every step of the way. “I saw the store up for sale and immediately knew it was the opportunity I’d been waiting for. I always thought buying my own newsagents would be far too expensive, but I spoke to the bank who gave me a loan and here we are. My dad owns a car garage, so I knew that being your own boss is tough and the hours are often long, but I’ve never looked back. “The retailer I bought it from is still incredibly supportive. When we were going through the process, he was constantly on hand to give me tips and advice. He told me that if you work hard, put the hours in, and put your customers first then you’ll be successful. I still speak to him on a regular basis, and if I ever have a question he’s just at the end of a phone. It’s great to know he’s always there should I ever need him.”

Taking a risk

Three years later, Kiefer saw an opportunity to open a second Lifestyle Express store half a mile down the road. Spotting that both stores would target completely different people, Kiefer decided to take a chance: “There had been a shop there a long time ago and I knew the spot gets a lot of passing trade so I thought what’s the worst that can happen? I’ve been taught to not think about these things for too long as you’ll talk yourself out of it, so I just decided to go for it. It felt right. “My first store is close to offices and people travelling into town needing to grab a bite to eat on their way, whereas my second is in a residential area and is great for people wanting food to take home. It’s really interesting how different a customer base can be for stores based just half a mile apart.” The first store Kiefer bought was already with Lifestyle Express when he took it on, as Kiefer explains: “I inherited Lifestyle Express

the first time around, and I’ve had a great experience with them so I decided to choose Lifestyle Express for my second store too. They offer such a fantastic level of support and it’s reassuring to know that they’re always there. Nothing is too much for them, and everything they do for you makes all the hard work worth it. “I decided to check out other symbol groups, just to see what else was out there, but I found the process with all other companies incredibly difficult. Often they wouldn’t even return your calls, whereas Lifestyle Express just couldn’t do enough for you so I knew I had made the right decision.”

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS

It all boils down to customer service for Kiefer, who tries to inject the same level of top-notch service as the retailer he bought the store from. “We have customers who consciously choose to come to our store over the local competition because they know that here they will receive a friendly smile and conversation. “I know how much customers value great service. I teach my staff that it’s important to spend a bit of time with every customer by actually engaging with them and not just hurry them through the process in the way that larger stores do. It’s also important to listen to what the customers are asking for. I always make sure to try and stock a product if it’s been asked for.” Community support is also high on the agenda for Kiefer, who has recently sponsored a local girls football team and is constantly on the look-out for ways he can support his community. “We want to give something back to those who give us so much loyalty. We also home deliver to customers who can’t get into the store easily. It’s just about keeping your eye open for ways you can make life easier for your customers.”

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Kiefer has big plans for his stores and he is currently in discussions with Post Office and DPD to add these services to his shop: “I want to become a one-stop shop so I can offer customers everything they need right here. I don’t want them to go anywhere else.” Kiefer’s entrepreneurial trait is showing no signs of slowing down, as he intends to open three more shops in the next two years. “I probably won’t stay purely in the convenience sector. I’m hoping to be able to hand over these stores to dedicated store managers which will allow me time to explore other retail avenues. It’s a really exciting time.”
