2018/19 SEASON
SANTA MONICA COLLEGE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
EXPERIENCE THE ARTISTS YOU LOVE AND DISCOVER NEW FAVORITES WITH A CURATED SERIES
WELCOME TO THE 2018/19 SEASON AT THE BROAD STAGE. On September 20, 2008, the vision for a center on the West Side of Los Angeles, where the best in performing arts would have a home, became a reality. As we step into our next season, we hope that you, too, consider this place home. You will often hear me speak about truth and how, without art, we have no truth. It is the artists and the art presented that have a voice and a life of their own, and that voice can speak to each of us in very personal, and sometimes unexpected, ways. The Broad Stage continues a proud tradition of providing a space for both the most established talent and artists on the cusp of major careers. We stand together in our commitment to uplifting the human spirit through music, dance and storytelling. We aspire to be a voice for what is possible in our world when beauty and truth are honored. Join us as we usher in our 2018/19 Season. We look forward to seeing you.

Acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist Madeleine Peyroux returns to The Broad Stage, touring in support of her latest album, Anthem. With songs balancing humor, pathos and irony, while weaving a topical thread throughout, Peyroux paints a picture of the challenges that our times present for someone trying to hold on to their hope, heart and optimism in the world that we now confront.
Pianist/composer/arranger John Beasley brings the smashing, four-time GRAMMY®-nominated big-band MONK’estra to The Broad Stage for the first time. Capturing the spirit of Thelonious Monk’s singular music in fresh arrangements flavored with contemporary sounds that range from Afro-Cuban rhythms to hip-hop, critics have called it “some of the most mesmerizing big-band music of recent memory.”
One of the foremost American composers of his era, pianist Billy Childs brings his unique blend of jazz and classical music to our stage. Don’t miss the multi-GRAMMY® Award winner’s groundbreaking project merging improvisation and jazz rhythms with the orchestration and instrumentation of a traditional chamber ensemble.
After a rollicking, sold-out Broad Stage debut last season, acoustic and electric bass legend Stanley Clarke returns. Performing a stellar program including selections from his latest album, The Message, Clarke and his exuberant band of young musicians continue to dazzle with impeccable musicianship.

Hailed by The New York Times as “an auteur” and by Jazz Times as “a daring improviser who delivers with heart-wrenching lyricism,” trumpeter Etienne Charles returns to his roots to celebrate the traditions that best exemplify Trinidadian culture. Inspired by the noises heard throughout Carnival festivities, Etienne’s Carnival: The Sound of a People brings the celebration to the stage.
The legendary, three-time GRAMMY®-nominated pianist/singer Freddy Cole pays a can’t-miss tribute to Nat King Cole on the eve of his brother’s 100th birthday. Don’t miss the musician The New York Times calls “the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.”
Corey Harris and Guy Davis, two leading ambassadors of acoustic blues, will each perform a set of their own before coming together onstage to celebrate the extraordinary music that has shaped their multifaceted careers.

Link Link Circus Isabella Rossellini Co-Directed by Guido Torlonia

APR 5 & 6, 2019
The Reduced Shakespeare Company® in
William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged)
Link Link Circus is at once comic and scientifically informed arguing Darwin’s theory of evolution which links us humans to animals. The show is illustrated with legendary Isabella Rossellini’s short comic films, home movies and animation. She transforms herself into philosophers of the past like Aristotle, René Descartes and a medieval theologian while her dog Pan plays various animals, assisted by puppeteer and animal handler Schuyler Beeman.
In this “tale told by idiots,” The Reduced Shakespeare Company weaves all of The Bard’s famous characters, greatest lines and magnificent speeches into a brand new Shakespearean smorgasbord. William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged) is a comic misadventure that will feel strangely familiar yet excitingly new. Contains occasional bawdy language and mild innuendo. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
Written and Directed by Reed Martin & Austin Tichenor

All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 By Peter Rothstein
With musical arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach
Mementos Mori is a dynamic, beguiling meditation on death and dying. In Manual Cinema’s most ambitious show to date, a cast of six puppeteers use hundreds of paper puppets, seven overhead projectors, two cameras and three screens to create a live “movie” in front of the audience. Accompanied by four musicians and live sound effects, the result is a rich mosaic of cinematic storytelling, all performed live with puppets.
A beloved Broad Stage tradition, Impro Theatre’s Jane Austen UnScripted features completely improvised, full-length plays in the style of one of the world’s greatest writers. Experience the company’s razor-sharp wit as the performers start with audience suggestions and deftly create a world of love-struck girls, brooding noblemen and charming cads.
All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 recounts an astounding moment in history when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas together, sharing food and drink, playing soccer, singing carols and burying each other’s dead. In some places along the Western Front the truce lasted a single night, and in others it endured until New Year’s Day. This dramatic re-telling weaves together firsthand accounts by 30 World War I soldiers with music including patriotic tunes, trench songs and Christmas carols.
