HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

2019/20 SEASON SANTA MONICA COLLEGE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

HOME IS...

BODY, MEMORY, MUSE, ANCESTRY AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, A PLACE TO CALL YOUR OWN.

WELCOME TO THE 2019/20 SEASON AT THE BROAD STAGE. The desire for a place to call one’s own has been inspiring artists for thousands of years, in every culture, in every era. Home seems like a simple concept. Yet, it is actually quite complex. It embodies endless meanings and conjures different kinds of emotions and memories for each of us. Whether it represents the American dream or a place from which one escapes, home encompasses family, safety, shelter, nostalgia and much, much more. In the coming season at The Broad Stage, we are pleased to reflect with you on the idea of home from a multitude of perspectives. Through thought-provoking theatre, dance, spoken word, music and more, we explore what it means to feel at home, what it means to leave home and what will always connect us to home. This season at The Broad Stage, home is where the art is.

THERE’S NO SHOW LIKE HOME Actor, creator and illusionist Geoff Sobelle explores the everyday drama of what makes a house a home in this breathtaking and tender spectacle of illusion, choreography and storytelling. MAR 4-8, 2020

HOME Created by Geoff Sobelle Scenic Design by Steven Dufala Directed by Lee Sunday Evans Original Songs by Elvis Perkins Produced by Beth Morrison TICKETS FROM $39

A house party where the whole audience is invited, HOME is an enchanting visual and immersive spectacle that asks what it means to make a house a home. On an empty stage, a house rises before your eyes. Residents past, present and future rollick through its rooms in an impromptu dance that defies time and space, magically transforming our mundane everyday tasks into a glorious, intimate and profound celebration.

“a magical, meditative piece on what a home can be” —The Stage

Impro Theatre’s

Jane Austen UnScripted TICKETS FROM $39

Inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone and origin stories from the American frontier, Our Country is set in California’s marijuana country, our still-Wild West. Based on recorded conversations between the artist and her younger brother, this autobiographical creation is a genrebending work, steeped in childhood memories and mythologies from Ancient Greece, recalling a time when we were young—as siblings, as a nation and as a democratic system.

Jane Austen wrote only six novels, but her wit and wisdom left readers pining for more. Impro Theatre’s Jane Austen UnScripted gives audiences a chance to imagine the other books she might have written. Inspired by audience suggestions, Impro Theatre deftly creates a world of love-struck girls, brooding noblemen and charming cads, and although hearts are sure to be broken, true love will win out in the end. You’ve seen them in the intimate space of The Edye—now witness the grandeur of Jane Austen come to fully realized life on our Main Stage for a limited run of two performances just in time for the holidays.
