ANSLEY PARK 9 ANSLEY DRIVE, NE Atlanta, GA 30309
A HOME WITH A
HISTORY Ansley Park is no stranger to “born again” homes, and 9 Ansley Drive is a prominent member of this noteworthy club. The park-like neighborhood, which was once the home of Georgia’s governor’s mansion, is also the birthplace of the Atlanta Ballet. Dorothy Alexander, the Ballet’s founder, purchased the home in 1936. She was inspired both by its resting place atop one of Ansley Park’s highest vistas (thus preventing the studio’s piano player from disturbing the neighbors) and its beautiful grounds, which would go on to set the stage for many a dance lesson and performance alike. Since it was built in 1916, this home has undergone several notable transformations and its most recent involved some names with whom you may be familiar… Prominent Atlanta architect, Bill Litchfield, and contractor, Mike Hammersmith, are responsible for modernizing this classic home and they took care to preserve the home’s tenor without sacrificing modern day functionality. John Howard of Howard Design Studio LLC was brought in to make sure the home’s lush landscaping history was honored in a way that would make the original proud. In its modern capacity, the home offers over 7,000sqft of beautifully finished living space. Of note, and true to the home’s original intention, is the emphasis placed on outdoor living. In addition to the expansive, flat back yard, the home boasts two large decks and two screened-in porches. The formal entrance foyer is flanked on one side by a porch while nestled on the other is the home’s sunroom and one of many work-from-home options 9 Ansley Drive provides.

The whole house is rich in sunlight and soaring ceilings. The main level hosts an elegant kitchen with views to the breakfast and family rooms. High, nickel gap wood panel ceilings and sky lights illuminate these living spaces which adjoin the screened-in porch and outdoor, wood burning fireplace. The oversized master on main boasts its own private sitting room and sleeping porch as well as a luxurious en-suite bath with shiplap and marble finishes. The third level provides three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bath and walk-in closet (custom and some integrated with automated light systems) as well as a laundry closet. A truly special feature is the midtown view from the front facing bedroom - particularly eye catching as the Autumn leaves start to fall! The finished terrace level provides two additional bedrooms, a full-bath, laundry closet, kitchen, mudroom and additional laundry room combo that connects the two car garage, and an enormous, light-filled bonus space that was the home of the ballet’s original dance studio. From here, floor-to-ceiling black iron doors open to the generous flat and fenced-in backyard.

To quote Ms. Alexander in praise of her home “I was so pleased when we bought it, and I have never felt any differently. I don’t think whenever a Spring comes that my spirits don’t soar when I see the tender green leaves that drape themselves on the trees”
