Welcome
Dear Licensing Industry,
We are excited to now be here, at the first ever LIMA Australian & New Zealand Licensing Awards Evening in Melbourne. For the licensing industry to grow and develop here in Australia & New Zealand, it is so important that we all support the industry, each other, and most importantly continue to offer customers in Australia & New Zealand the best products and services possible across all categories. Firstly I would like to congratulate Fred Gaffney on his induction into the LIMA Australia Hall of Fame this year. Fred was one of the founding figures for licensing here in Australia and is our first inductee; we look forward to recognising more incredible people into our Hall of Fame in the future.
The response to the awards this year was exceptional, with over 200 submissions received and engagement from all sectors. Some highlights included over 140 companies, over 75 license brands and over 40 different retailers being represented in the submissions. For those who have been nominated for an award tonight I wish you success and for those who were not nominated in this years’ awards, I encourage you to continue to develop amazing products and services so that you can be recognised for them in the future.
Thank you to everyone who has booked a ticket or a table tonight, to all the award entrants, our sponsors and all the people who have worked on this awards evening; without you this would not be possible. We also appreciate the support of our current LIMA Australia members and we hope that those companies who are not currently LIMA Members consider joining us and becoming even more involved in the licensing industry in Australia & New Zealand.
LIMA Australia has adopted Autism relating to children and their families in collaboration with Sesame Workshop, stay tuned for more on this! Our goal for next year is to increase the reach and recognition of companies who excel in delivering licensed products and services across Australia & New Zealand and we really hope that you all get involved again next year. Until then please enjoy the evening and thank you again.

The Awards Process
In April this year the team at LIMA Australia began the task of finalising the Awards categories which would make up the first ever Australian & New Zealand Licensing Awards set for November, 2018.
Our key objective in the process has been to recognise excellence in our industry from all key players involved, namely retailers, licensees and Licensors/Agents. The 17 Awards categories were then decided on and in early June submissions were requested from the industry.
On Friday the 10th of August, submissions were closed and LIMA Australia was very excited to receive over 200 submissions across all awards categories. This was a fantastic response from the industry and testament to the pride we all have in our brands, products and licensing. One week later our expert industry panel met at Huntingdale Golf Club to review and analyse the many submissions and finally agree on those to be nominated for each award across the many categories.
Each industry expert was responsible for scoring each submission out of 10 for both “creativity, originality & innovation” and “marketplace acceptance”.
The nominees were then announced to the industry and Australian & New Zealand based LIMA members were invited to vote for their winners.
The final judging to decide the overall winner in each award category comprises 50% from the industry panel and 50% from the LIMA ANZ member base. On the 2nd of October the voting was closed and the winner’s votes were tallied.
If you’re nominated tonight, we wish you the best of luck and encourage everyone to submit more great nominations for next years awards!

2018 LIMA ANZ HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Congratulatons Fred Gaffney
LIMA Australia is proud to induct Ian Fred Gaffney as the first member of the LIMA Australia Licensing Hall of Fame. Fred has been a trailblazer for the Licensing Industry not only in Australia but around the world.
He began his business in 1977 with Sesame Street being his very first client. From there, Star Wars was to be another franchise which Fred would bring to the Australian public. Fred’s inimitable style won him more brands and his business expanded rapidly. International brand owners knew that if they wanted their properties licensed in Australia, then you worked with Fred. Fred was constantly travelling and was famous for his business cards with multiple international mobile numbers so anyone could reach him, anywhere in the world, any time.
He lived by the motto of “you go, you get” and Fred continued to bring the world’s leading licensed brands into his portfolio. Whilst also bringing great international brands to Australia & New Zealand, Fred was also proud to take key Australian brands to the world including Bananas In Pyjamas, The Wiggles and The Crocodile Hunter. Fred’s success was not by chance. He’s always been meticulous in his research and being ahead of the curve on the next trends in licensing. His passion and drive for the brands he worked with is unparalleled and his sheer will would often create licensed opportunities for many licensees and brand owners. Our industry in Australia and New Zealand would not be what it is today if it was not for Fred Gaffney. His influence has, and will continue to, shape our industry and for this we are grateful.
Congratulations Fred from all at LIMA Australia!
I am personally thrilled to Congratulate Fred Gaffney as the inaugural inductee into the LIMA Australia Hall of Fame.
This is an exciting and tting tribute to the man who single-handedly pioneered the Australian Licensing scene.
Australians have spent tens of billions of dollars over Fred’s career, on Brands that he was the custodian for.
Whilst most were focused on the Brands and Characters that Gaffney’s were licensing in Australia, I was witness to the making of the Biggest single Brand of all – Fred Gaffney himself! There has been no Bigger character in the Global Licensing Industry.
So many Brands have Fred to thank for their enduring success. So many fortunes were made thanks to Fred.
Now 25 years on, I am proud to call Fred a friend, and I am thrilled for this great honour bestowed upon him. There is nobody more deserving of this esteemed induction into the Hall of Fame. Fred Gaffney is a Living Legend.
Congratulations Fred and Irene, and we wish you much prosperity from all your friends at PlayCorp.

CONGRATULATIONS FRED GAFFNEY ON YOUR INDUCTION INTO THE LIMA AUSTRALIA HALL OF FAME. FROM YOUR FRIENDS...
Dan Romanelli. Former President. WBCP
Before I ever visited Australia, I had a great impression of that country. That came from virtually two sources, Crocodile Dundee, and, yes, Fred Gaffney. Both charming and knowledgeable celebrities, one as a movie star and the other as an icon for representing Australia in the world of licensing. However, Fred has far more energy than Dundee, and you couldn’t help but be charmed by his accent, enthusiasm and knowledge. Whenever he came to visit me at Warner or moving on to a role as a consultant, I always look forward to getting together and hearing his great stories and enjoying Brekky! Congratulations Fred, and very well deserved.
Dan Kletzky,President.Entertainment Licensing Associates
I guess my stories with Fred are highlighted by a trip I made to Brisbane Australia with my son Jason (he was about 10 years old) when I was involved with making the Street Fighter film. Fred and Irene visited the set for a few days, and every day was special. But, the story Jason and I will never forget is when I went with Jason and Fred “toy” shopping. The three of us went into one of the department stores, and Fred, in his own style, could not stop buying toys… anything and everything went into Fred’s shopping cart. Jason’s eyes were popping out of his head. Anyway, like most Fred stories, that hour or so was larger than life, and to this very day, Jason remembers that shopping spree as a highlight of knowing Fred. Enough said. To know Fred is to love him! And don’t forget to give honorable mention to Irene!
Bob Stein, Owner. The Grove Licensing and Design Group
Whether it was the bar at the Rihga Royal, the Four Seasons/Peninsula the party and entourage were there. But seeing through all the fun, Fred was one of the most knowledgeable people I ever met in licensing. Always keeping a feverish pace on top of every property. Who can forget his biz card with every hotel and address with the corresponding dates he would be there. And what about the miniature biz card Fred created for his boy Luke. When Fred came to town, Julia and I wanted to do something special for him, as he was always so generous to others. We told him to invite all of his LA friends. What a party it was!!! In spite of telling Fred not to bring anything, he still brought a case of Dom and the most beautiful flower arrangement from the BH Hotel and as Australia’s goodwill ambassador, always handing out boomerangs, Aussie hats and samples of the latest Aussie licensed properties. Julia and I had the joy of spending New Years Eve with Fred and Irene at the Sydney Opera House. Wherever we went in Australia, everyone knew Fred. After all, he is a national treasure.
Rich Collins. CEO Big Tent Entertainment
You could say to almost anyone in our business, anywhere in the world, “I saw Fred last week”, and they’d know exactly who you were talking about. Fred was his own brand long before that became a thing. And what a brand! Showman, entrepreneur, globetrotter, and thought leader are just a few of the descriptors that come to mind when someone mentions Fred. Behind all that, however, was the man Fred was and is. You see, Fred was a genius at networking. He was always happy to share his knowledge and his contacts. Countless numbers of licensing professionals will tell you that education and introductions from Fred had a profound impact on their career and successes. I count myself in that group. His unselfish and ceaseless dedication to advancing both Australian brands and the licensing industry is the reason he has finally been so justly recognized. I am proud to call him my friend and colleague.
Henry Unger. Licensing Consultant
As I think back on my 40+ years of friendship with Fred, I can say, with all honesty, that he was the single most positive influence on my career as a licensing consultant. He is most definitely, a first round “Global Hall of Famer” not just for Australia, but also for the whole licensing world. He introduced me to the “Who’s Who” in our industry. His knowledge, prodigious memory and personal relationships with the best of the best were unparalleled! I’ve never met anyone with his energy, enthusiasm and love of life. I feel truly blessed to have experienced this force of nature in major meetings held at hotels, coffee shops, backs of planes, cars, boats, you name it. It felt like a full-on learning seminar every time! Fred was truly in his day, larger than life. There are no words to express my appreciation for all his help in introducing me to so many terrific people and amazing experiences, but most of all, for his enduring friendship. He played an indelible part in my life, and I am forever grateful. So, thank you, my hat is off to you. Cheers Mate!
Jay Foreman.CEO Basic Fun
The first time I ever saw Fred, I heard him first! It was at the old home of the licensing show, the NY Hilton and believe he was promoting Bananas in Pyjamas. There was a big commotion in front of me coming down the aisle with press, costumed characters and loads of people in the aisle. I heard this booming voice from behind the crowd introducing his client to everyone within earshot and extolling the excitement and impact it would make on the business. Then he appeared, his persona as big as his voice! Huge smile and outstretched hand. Fred was a real presence in the licensing business as big as Australia is vast. My first interaction directly was with The Wiggles when Play Along became a licensee and not only did I work with Fred but we and our families became friends. I always remember seeing Fred at the departures area of JFK Airport in New York where he was followed by a train of at least three sky caps hauling boxes and bags of toys he’d purchased from various big box retailers around the New York City area to bring back to study at home. Fred was big, and did everything big! A true icon of our business

First was Life. Be in it. Then came The Smurfs, Phar Lap, The Man from Snowy River and many more thereafter. But you were the craziest character of all, even in 1978 when we signed our first deal forty years ago! Crazy or not we enjoyed, respected, admired, and loved working with you (mostly). Thanks for the opportunity and congratulations on the Hall of Fame induction,

THE HISTORY OF LICENSING IN AUSTRALIA
Licensing in Australia dates back to 1947 when Disney appointed Walt Granger to operate Disney Enterprises here in Australia out of Sydney. The Granger family were heavily invested in the Disney Comic business in those days.
Licensing as a serious commercial opportunity began in 1974 when Fred Gaffney travelled to the US. He noticed that a property called Sesame Street was prominent in many retail outlets and catalogues. Fred negotiated a deal with Sesame to represent the brand in Australia and licensing was born.
IFG was founded and later became Gaffney International Licensing. Fred controlled licensing in this country for 30 years. His passion and work ethic was witnessed and respected on a global scale. Fred represented and managed brands including Thomas, Raggedy Anne, Snake, The Man From Snowy River, The Smurfs, Thomas and The Phantom to mention just a few. Fred was responsible for the global expansion of the hit ABC series Bananas in
Pyjamas along with Graeme Grassby, who is also an industry stalwart. Fred Gaffney promoted and drove the licensing business in Australia and used his profile to promote the industry all over the world.
Many of the most successful licensing professionals who work in our industry today worked and learnt the business from Fred. John Moore ran Warner Brothers and John Cookson took over the Disney operations from Walter Granger. In the 80’s Barry Jones ran the Milton Bradley business in Australia and appointed Hugh Harris to license his properties including Transformers, My Little Pony and Playschool. John Walsh and Bob Lee are also two industry veterans who for many years ran Copyright Licensing in Australia. Importantly Newman
Fred Gaffney promoted and drove the licensing business in Australia and used his profile to promote the industry all over the world. Many of the most successful licensing professionals who work in our industry today worked and learnt the business from Fred.
Licensing was also an active partner of Gaffney International. Tony Newman ran the licensing business in New Zealand for many years before he developed his own licensing business in Australia.
Some other iconic brands which have featured significant licensing programs in Australia include The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teletubbies, Toy Story and the original Jurassic Park.
Our industry has always been heavily focussed on character and entertainment brands, particularly pre-school brands. During the 70’s and 80’s Gaffney represented most of these high profile properties and therefore the market followed his lead. GIL also included a sporting division. In those early days Fred represented the NFL and NHL in Australia. Later on James Ashworth, who was a former IMG executive, began his own business called Velocity
Brand Management. His organisation commercially represents the NRL, Cricket, Soccer, Tennis and Rugby in our market. 25 years ago Haven Licensing was born. Tom Punch and Yvonne King began their business by representing brands such as Ren and Stimpy and South Park. Over the years they have also represented brands of the calibre of Star Wars, Marvel, The Simpsons, Nickelodeon, Sanrio and Mr Men. They have become an important part of our fabric in this market.
Sharing this space has been Merchantwise, Wild Pumpkin Licensing, now known as WP Brands and The Fusion Agency, now known as Centa IP.
Things have changed dramatically since those early days, and competition and more limited retail shelf space has meant that fewer brands have been able to gain traction in the marketplace.
LICENSING TODAY
The market has changed and evolved significantly over the last 30 plus years. The industry today is very different and requires alternative methods and techniques to enter the market and launch new brands. Consolidation of brand owners and representation is a key factor in how brands are managed in today’s market.
Over recent years we have seen many global brand owners re-evaluate their businesses and move away from the agency model and open their own offices in Australia. Consolidation has meant that Disney has purchased Marvel and Lucas, and is soon to own 20th Century Fox. All of these properties were formally managed and represented by agencies and we have seen eOne Licensing and NBCUniversal open their own offices here. Today The Wiggles is managed in-house and has seen a significant reinvention in recent times.
As mentioned earlier, our market has traditionally been very character and entertainment centric. As conditions have changed we are seeing more emphasis being focused on other categories including Celebrity, Sport, Corporate and Art Brands. This has dictated different methods of distribution and marketing techniques. The apparel business, which includes licensed underwear, t-shirts, inner and outerwear has always been a high profile category for licensing programs. Preschool, tween and teen licensing programs are regularly seen in our market. Alternatively adult merchandise activations are also often seen where the property permits.
Some examples of recent pre-school programs include Paw Patrol and PJ Masks. Some examples of Tween programs include Jo Jo Siwa and L.O.L! Surprise! An example of an Adult Licensing program is our local realty cooking show MKR. Australians are regularly influenced by global trends originating out of the US more than the UK or Europe.
THE RETAIL LANDSCAPE
The Australian retail landscape consists of specialty, department stores, mass retailers, fashion chains, supermarkets, convenience and now online. Pop-up stores have also become an important part of the distribution model.
Traditionally much of the consumer licensing activity has taken place in the mass segment. This tier sees Target, Kmart and Big W as the main combatants. In the early days the specialty market and department store segment included Lindsay’s who later became Target, Venture Stores, John Martins and Grace Brothers. Myer and David Jones was the place where you would launch a licensing program and build the platform to take it to mass once fully established.
The supermarket segment, which now consists of Coles, Woolworths, ALDI Supermarkets, IGA Supermarkets and more recently Kaufland, offers a general merchandise opportunity for brands. The sheer number of stores offering in excess of 2,000 outlets provides a genuine volume opportunity.
More recently the convenience route has offered an alternative solution for the distribution of consumer licensed programs providing the retail pricing is generally under AUD $10. Online is an ever-emerging platform which will continue to grow and become a more significant percentage of the overall
marketing mix. The launch of Amazon and Alibaba in Australia will no doubt create further change to the distribution models in our market. It would appear that as the industry evolves the data shows that retailers probably need both bricks and mortar coverage coupled with a strong online presence to gain ultimate success.
Australia is a huge continent and many international operators who have chosen to come to Australia have under-estimated the cost of shipping and delivery from overseas. One advantage that many of the larger mass-market retailers possess is their national stores network. This provides a bricks and mortar solution for consumers to buy online and pick up from their local store.
There is no doubt that we will see further change and consolidation in the market over the coming months and years. This will provide new challenges for us to find solutions to reach the consumer in different ways and it has become clear that bricks and mortar stores must focus on experience.
