The Bullroarer: actively and creatively leading the way in cultural communications & engagement
Based in Townsville, The Bullroarer is an exciting mobile consulting business that specialises in media, art, design and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural engagement. The Bullroarer is a 100% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned and run small business. Michelle Tyhuis, of Torres Strait Islander descent, and Andrew Perkins of the Darug tribe of Greater Western Sydney are behind the concept. They share five sons ranging in age from 5 to 17 years of age. Michelle and Andrew launched The Bullroarer earlier this year as a way of openly engaging with businesses in need of ‘cutural mentoring’ - i.e. practical assistance and strategies for embedding cultural perspectives across everyday practice as well as support in effectively engaging with Indigenous clients.

Yarning Circle workshop helps local child care educators embed cultural perspectives The Bullroare recently faciliated a cultural diversity inclusion Yarning Circle workshop with the entire staff of a local child care centre in Townsville. Twenty-three My Little Feet Child Care Centre educators from both Aitkenvale and Pimlicobased services attended 2 x 3-hour sessions run on a Wednesday night in May and July 2018. The Yarning Circle workshop provided useful information, advice and practical activities for child care educators to use in the classroom and across the organisation. There was a great response from the staff involved, who were each provided with a Cultural Engagement Learning Kit containing all the workshop resources (PPT, Activity Book, Handouts, Pens and Pencils) as well as a unique ‘Story Stone’ gift from The Bullroarer. As part of working with The Bullroarer for the Yarning Circle workshop, My Little Feet Child Care engaged in our Cultural Mentoring service - which led to the creation of the playground Wall Mural at Pimlico (pictured right), and assistance with preparing for NAIDOC Week 2018.

The Bullroarer Snapshot Urgent call for more foster and kinship carers supported by creative, meaningful marketing Late last year, The Bullroarer graphic artist and designer Michelle Tyhuis worked closely with local community organisation Althea Projects on their foster and kinship carer recruitment campaign. As part of the campaign preparation, The Bullroarer combined journalism, artistic and graphic design skills to create & produce a number of marketing items for the project. These items included a 40page information booklet, a tri-fold brochure, a postcard and media release. The marketing materials incorporated a hand-drawn and painted artwork by artist Michelle Tyhuis that was commissioned as an original artwork about foster and kinship care and the Althea Projects vision of support. The artwork was converted into a digital illustration, and recreated into six unique page spread designs (as well as motifs) which was incorporated into the 40 page booklet.

Foster carer Leann Pascoe opens home for Media Release As part of our work with Althea Projects’ Foster and Kinship Carer recruitment campaign, The Bullroarer had the rare and wonderful opportunity to interview foster mum Leann Pascoe for a Media Release. With her husband Bruce, Leann has fostered over 35 children in the past 11 years. She currently has 7 children in her care. Leann intrinsically feels the strain of wanting to take more children due to the urgent need. The at-home interview formed the basis of a Media Release and Feature Article from Althea Projects that was released during national Foster and Kinship Carers Week in April 2018.

The Bullroarer Snapshot New Melbourne Coffee & Dining business kicks off with logo by The Bullroarer Proud new business owner Michael Galluzzo has sought creative inspiration from Far North Queensland for his innovative coffee and global dining experience shop in Melbourne. Michael’s new business logo is now splashed across staff uniforms, aprons and coffee mugs. However, his creative adventure didn’t stop there! Article continues below
Cultural pride with brekky and a hot cuppa in Melbourne Kito’s Coffee and Dining in Melbourne are proudly embracing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage by taking bold steps to embed cultural atworks across their business. In early April, The Bullroarer worked with business owner Michael Galluzzo to develop his vision of a rose-gold K for Kito’s logo, as well as a Platypus artwork that could be applied to work shirts, aprons and coffee cups. Both graphics went through an intensive creative process which involved Michael each step of the way. The result was a a logo that could move its colours into the waters of the artwork as the platypus himself. After printing the work uniforms (shirts, shorts and aprons) and the platypus coffee mug, Michael returned to the Bullroarer to develop an earthy-toned Lizard inspired by Michael’s totem which is tattooed on his arm. The response to Kito’s creative artworks have been overwelmingly positive. Michael says it has helped set his business apart from the rest, and he loves the positive impact it is having on his staff and customers.

The Bullroarer Snapshot Culture Class with primary school kids an energetic success For a short period in March, The Bullroarer engaged with Cranbrook State School to offer grade 5/6 students a special ‘Culture Class’ as part of their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural studies program.
Bright interpretative artwork created for the upcoming Strategic Plan of Create Foundation In June this year, Michelle Tyhuis from the Bullroarer created a special Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander graphic artwork and digital elements for Create Foundation’s upcoming Strategic Plan document. The artwork started as a hand-drawn sketch and evolved into a full colour graphic artwork, with the symbols and colours chosen to represent the story of Create Foundation and their important role in helping to improve the lives of vulnerable children in care. The digital elements that were produced as part of the Strategic Plan artwork project included six icons, eight strip designs and three photo frames all inspired by, and drawn from the original artwork. The graphic artwork and digital elements were given to Create Foundation’s graphic designer, who will produce the publication for release at a later date. The Create Foundation is a national consumer body representing the voices of children and young people with an out-of-home care experience (including foster/kinship care, and residential care).
During a split 2-hour study period, The Bullroarer shared cultural knowledge and insight with 30 enthusiastic young learners. Through lively discussions, educational videos on country, and creative art activities like making an Aboriginal symbols memory tiles game, the grade 5/6 students developed a strong understanding of what it means to identify as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person in Australia today. The Bullroarer are offering these classes to school-based and community groups across Townsville. Uniquely, The Bullroarer offers a range of topics that can be packaged into your own culturally appropriate learning program. Class topics include Traditional Custodian Tribal Boundaries Mapping, Torres Strait Islander Cultural Appreciation, Traditional Indigenous Games and much more.
