About t he Ar t is t Michelle Tyhuis

Michelle Tyhuis, 38, is an accomplished Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary visual artist who has also built a successful career as a journalist and graphic designer. She identifies as Meriam Mer from Mer and Erub Islands in the Torres Strait and Dutch from Rijssen in the Nederlands, with kinship ties to the Barkindji and Darug peoples of New South Wales. Michelle’s artworks are inspired by her deep spirituality and connection with culture and creation (the natural world). She has a passion for growing her understanding of her own cultural identity and for sharing a strong sense of belonging through her artworks and their stories. Michelle’s artworks are vibrant, happy representations of culture & spirit that are strong in symbolism & culturally significant meaning & values.
