Being the Son of a Black Belt . . .

Being the son of a black belt is no cakewalk. You may think, "Awww, it would be so easy to get a black belt. Just show up and kick and punch." Now you would be partially right, but that is an understatement. You must have focus and discipline.....You should definitely try Martial Arts at some time in your life. . . . I do it every day and it is actually a very rewarding experience. Ryder Wayne 15, Eustis, FL 1st Degree Black Belt See Ryderʼs full article on page 19.

Erik’s Think Tank

Summer vacation is coming to a close and I’ve had a great time doing so many fun things. Lots of things are starting up now for me like orchestra, swim team, more school and my LSAT prep class. (This fall I plan to apply to law schools.)

16 Erik Slaby ra, FL o D t n u o M hief Editor-in-C

My great adventure this summer was attending a two-week mock trial camp at Patrick Henry College in Virginia. I learned so much about trials and the preparation that goes into them. We also took field trips to Washington, D.C. and Harper’s Ferry and I met loads of great people and had a fantastic time!

Taking the LSAT prep class has also been a great adventure for me...of the cerebral kind! By the end of the day, my brain is drained! I’ve spent a month and a half in Orlando, four days a week for the whole day. When not in my class, I would do my homework at Wendy’s and it’s gotten to the point where everybody there knows what I order! Before I even get to the register they’ve started pulling down my hash browns! On a slightly related note, in the April 2012 edition of The Bunk Room, I wrote about my experiences attending a hearing at the Civil Appeals Court in Alabama. Recently I learned the outcome of that case. In the case, a homeowner’s association was suing a homeowner over renting their home in the subdivision. The homeowners ended up winning the case in the appellate court, but the association appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court. Just last week, I learned that the association’s appeal was struck down and the homeowners have won the case once and for all! It’s so cool that I was able to watch this trial and see this win for the homeowners! The neat part is that this decision is being used as precedent in many other states as well!

Well my dear friends and readers of The Bunk Room, I’m sure you will all enjoy reading this issue with all the great articles we have this go around! Have fun reading and keep on writing! Adios!

Duct Tape ! y t Par By Brianna 11, Cocoa, FL Everyone has at least one creative thing or project that they like to do, right? Well mine is creating duct tape things. There are so many colors, shapes, and designs of duck tape! It’s awesome!! Maybe you can even try making creations up. What can you make?

By Shaiann 12, Port St John, FL Last weekend I had a duct tape slumber party with three of my friends. The party was really fun and at the same time very interesting to learn how to make things out of duct tape. We made duct tape wallets, flowers and mostly anything you could think of making out of duct tape. It was a fun party so I recommend if you ever need an idea of something to do at a slumber party, the duct tape party is a great idea.

9-11Remembered By Maria Chester 18, Eustis, FL Bunk Roomie A-Team

September 11th, 2001...that fateful morning...there is an entire generation of children too young to remember what happened that day. But it is something that should not be forgotten so easily. I was only eight years old, and there is much I don’t remember, but some memories never fade. My mother and I were in Santiago, Chile spending the summer with our Spanish relatives. I had just come

some madmen had pierced though our every defense, destroying our sense of security, our feeling of invulnerability. The airport security was tight, far tighter than it had been on the flight to Chile. I remember having to put my stuffed animal “Puppy” through the x-ray machine as a waiting security officer looked on gravely. There was a tension in the air, a thinly veiled fear among the populace. Even the Chileans were afraid; they had just seen the great America brought to her knees.

downstairs for breakfast, but no one was around. The house seemed empty. I walked into the living room and found my aunt and uncle clustered around the television with my mom. On the screen I watched as a plane flew into a tall, grey tower. The grownups were speaking in hushed, worried tones. I looked back at the TV. I didn’t understand what was going on, but I knew something terrible had happened.

I turned to my mother and asked her a question—in English. Everyone in the room looked at me. They didn’t want an American on their plane. To be an American, was to be a target. We boarded the plane and after a tense all-night flight we arrived back home. I could sense the relief from the other passengers as we touched down without incident.

My mother waited nearly a month before we tried to fly back to the States. Everyone was afraid of

By Maria Chester 18, Eustis, FL Bunk Roomie A-Team

Cha lle ngi Wri ng ter Wit The hin

I began writing for The Bunk Room over a year ago. I had been a reader of the magazine since the very first issue in 2008 and enjoyed reading the articles submitted by other kids. Though I enjoyed writing, I was hesitant to submit a piece because I did not think my composition was good enough. Had it not been for the urging of a teacher, I never would have tried. Much to my surprise, my article was accepted and I was invited to become a member of the “Bunk Roomies,” a group of writers who contributed to the magazine regularly.

In November it was announced that a new group was being formed for especially dedicated writers in the “Bunk Roomies.” It was to be called the A-Team. Members of this “Assignment Team” would focus on feature writing and interviewing. I loved writing for The Bunk Room, and the opportunity to learn feature writing was more than I could resist. I did have one problem though. I considered myself to be something of a shy person. If not shy, then at least soft spoken in the extreme. Suffice it to say, I dreaded the very idea of conducting interviews. However, desire overcame fear and I became the first member of the A-Team! Despite all my fears and misgivings, I soon discovered that I enjoyed interviewing people and began looking forward to receiving new assignments. Still, I often found myself nervous beforehand, because I felt that my interviewing skills were not all they should be. My questions seemed a bit mechanical, and I would occasionally “freeze up” in the middle of an interview.

For Christmas, my mom gave me a scrapbook, but this was no ordinary scrapbook. This was to be my “Book of Possibilities” into which I could put all my dreams, and hopes, and wishes. I found it gratifying to see my dreams begin to take shape on the pages and they become almost tangible to me. Into this book I put a list of people who I wished to interview. Some of them were authors, some of them actors or actresses, and some of them people or organizations that had impressed me. Anyone and anything that interested me I put into my book.

Later, as I gained more confidence I was able to loosen up and really enjoy my interviews.

My editor, Margo, encouraged me to try to make my dreams a reality. She showed me how to find contact information for the people I wanted to interview, and how to send out interview requests. I sent out just one single email to a favorite author of mine, to see what would happen. To my surprise, she said yes! Excited, I sent out more emails and within hours had received positive responses from many of them. I simply couldn’t believe the response!

I learned much from these experiences, but one of the things I will remember best is this: Your dreams can come true, if only you take the first step. -30-

-30-

Editor’s Note: The designation “-30-” has traditionally been added by journalists to the end of their articles to indicate “end of story.” Journalists would type this symbol at the end of a story to signal the typesetter of the early hot metal linecasting machines to set 30 "em" dashes. An em dash is a dash equal to the width of the letter M. All these dashes put together would create a visual line, the width of a column of text that would mark the end of a story. This was necessary in early print shops where long, backward-reading masses of body type would tumble out of the linecasting machines, making it easier on the eyes.

Non-Stop Excitement As Far As The Eye Could See!

By Lucas 13, Leesburg, FL

My family recently went on a cruise for seven days. I went with my family, my aunt and uncle, and my grandparents. Now, this was no ordinary cruise, oh-no. This was the biggest ship in the world. There were three stops. We went to Labadee, Haiti where the beach is rocky on one side and deep on the other.

CRUISING Editor’s Note: This is the second of a two-part series on cruising. See our July 2012 edition.

Lucas

The second stop was Jamaica “MON.” There was a lot to look at, and a lot to buy. Number three was Mexico. There, we went to see the Mayan ruins. We saw some temples right on the cliff overlooking the ocean. There were iguanas out sunning themselves everywhere. In Florida, we usually see green anoles, little lizards, running around everywhere. This was like that, only they were gigantic. There was a donut shop on the boat with complementary donuts. I visited there at least once a day. There was also a cupcake shop (the cupcakes were not free so we only went there once).

There was a Flowrider, which is basically a machine that shoots out waves so that you can surf or boogie board. I got pretty good at boogie boarding, but didn’t dare try the stand up surfing. My dad did, though. Only once. The boat also had several big pools. Our room was more bed than room (most of the time). There was a zip line on the boat that was about 87 ft in the air over the carousel, donut shop and some stores. They had some shows: Hairspray (which was boring somewhat), an a-cappella singing group called Mosaic, Come Fly with Me an acrobatics show, and an ice show called Frozen in Time. Also, we saw an actor, Jim J. Bullock who was in Alf and Spaceballs, and a singer, Jerome Bell, a semi-finalist of season 10 of American Idol. They were both starring in Hairspray.

We ate dinner the same place every night, but who’s complaining? The food was amazing. There was a lot to do, for example: tasting all the food. The mini putt-putt was too easy. What they need is more ice cream flavors. The promenade had a parade (a childish one). It had all the Dreamworks characters. In fact, all week long they had Dreamworks characters all over the boat. We even had breakfast with them twice. Friday morning, we even got to have chocolate milkshakes with our breakfast.

The ship we were on was called The Liberty of The Seas. I really loved spending quality time with my family as well as going on an amazing vacation.

Erik B

enj It was remarkable how big the ship was. There were 14 stories tall. Every one on the ship was very nice. My favorite activity on the ship was the Flowrider. The Flowrider is an artificial wave. The purpose is to give people the feeling of actually surfing. Throughout the whole cruise, I felt like a million bucks. When my family and I went to dinner we were served in a beautiful restaurant with amazing service. It was nice because we wouldn't normally go to a restaurant that nice. Every day I was amazed at the size of the ship. It was amazingly huge! I couldn't believe that there was an ice rink on a boat. During a typical week long cruise, the ship goes though: 69,000 steaks; 12,000 pounds of chicken; 1,400 pounds of lobster; 65,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and 35,000 pounds of fresh fruits 5,800 pounds (2,600 kg) of cheese 28,000 fresh eggs

All of the employes were so nice. I always felt really welcome and every one on board was really helpful. I loved watching the entertaining acts that they would have every day at the theater. One day Kenny James sang. There was also an amazing juggler as well as some other great acts. Over all, I love cruising and can’t wait to go on an other Caribbean cruise.

One is going to be named Vanessa and the other is Esther. If that doesn’t work out though, I want to adopt some girls from China. When they turn about 10, I want to get a yorky-terrier puppy.

When I get older I plan on attending Harvard or Yale. There I will study for a career in Math or Science. Before I go there, I think I may go to Pensacola Christian College, but that’s only because they have a rock climbing wall, a skating rink, and a swimming pool for student use (Yippee!). I plan to become a civil engineer, or a pharmacist (A dancer would be ok too!).

Then, when I get old I plan on retiring, and living in a condo in Miami, Florida. Before I get that old though I am going to live in Beverly Hills! That’s where I want to be!! This is my life pretty much planned-out!

My first day at Milwaukee County Zoo By Khadeja 11, Hillsboro, WI

Jaguar Hangout. 16 | TheBunkRoom.com | Fall 2012 | Be published! See page 6.

When I was 5 my mom and I went to Milwaukee County Zoo and we saw many animals but the one that fascinated me the most was the jaguar. At the time I didn’t know the difference between a leopard and a jaguar but now I know that jaguars have small spots in their bigger ones and leopards don’t. When we got to the cats, I sat on the ledge near the jaguar. When I did that the jaguar came by and sat by me! Nobody was expecting that.

The next time I went to the zoo we went to the gift shop and found out her name was Sandra. But when we went to see her there were ropes so I couldn’t sit by her. I guess it was a once in a lifetime experience.

A Mid-Summer Night Storm

PRINCIPE ORTHODONTICS

(A quatrain poem)

One late summer night, I awoke with a start, For I heard such a noise that stirred even my heart.

$300 OFF

As I looked out my window, wondering what it could be, I found the answer to my question – a storm in full fury! While I gazed out in awe, my eyes opened wide, For I had never seen such a storm; I was glad to be inside! The wind shook everything, from the twigs to the trees. This wind, I assure you, was much more than a breeze! The wild wind wailed, shrieking hysterically; It was throwing a fit, like an unhappy baby! It raged and it surged, blowing this way and that, Dismantling everything, from trash cans to doormats!

And the rain, oh the rain! My how it fell! Within just a minute, it could’ve filled a thousand wells. It ran down the roofs, leaked in through the shutters, Streaked across windows, and flooded all the gutters. As I watched the rain torrents being blown left and right, I saw then a flash, so piercing and bright. One single bolt of lightning shot down through the sky.

It lit up the whole world right in front of my eyes. After I saw the bolt of lightning flash, I heard not a sound, then a deafening crash! BOOM! went the thunder as it rolled and rumbled. CRACK! went more lightning, while the thunder again grumbled. While I stared in amazement at the tumultuous squall, I heard a soft whimper from out in the hall. I crept quietly across the room and opened the door, And there lay my puppy, who was trembling on the floor. He lay there shaking, staring up into my eyes, And when a clap of thunder sounded, he began to yelp and cry. I knelt down beside him and stroked his ears, Hoping that somehow I could calm his fears.

Journey To

By Tori 12, Holmen, WI Six years have passed since I made the decision to become a leader – without even realizing it. When I was six I didn’t really have any thoughts about becoming a black belt or even a World Champion in karate. I was simply in karate to have fun.

By Coen 5, Titusville, FL

Over the years I continued to have fun being in karate, and with each new belt achieved, I began to change not only physically, but also as a person too. I found I had many new opportunities to do new things along the way. These opportunities included me learning how to meet new people and introduce myself to an adult in a confident manner. I also learned how to handle bullies with respect.

I have been in Tae Kwon Do classes for a year. I train at Space Coast Martial Arts in Titusville with my instructors Mr. and Mrs. Penton. I have a camouflage belt. I joined the leadership program last week and I am working very hard to get my black belt and to become an instructor very quickly because I want to lead everyone very soon.

When I became a purple belt, my karate instructor told my parents that I could join the leadership program at the school. I was a natural go-getter, so they signed me up. On the first day of the leadership program I was hooked and I knew I had to continue on this path.

In class, I practice my forms called “In Wha 1,” that means Broken Glory. I exercise to stay fit, break boards, spar, and learn how to use weapons.

In the karate leadership program I learned how to become a more confident person in situations inside and outside of karate. I also learned how to become a teacher of karate and how to pass this confidence training onto other students that were just getting started out.

I have learned a lot of things in class like self-defense, getting away from bad guys, blocks, kicks, being respectful, honor for your parents, instructors, and your juniors and seniors, having courtesy, helping others, and never giving up. Always try again even if you feel like you can’t do something. You just get up and keep going and try again until you feel like you can do it. I really like my instructors. I have learned a lot of cool things from them. Everything that they teach me makes me feel super awesome because I have the power to do stuff that I never thought I could, like a split!

18 | TheBunkRoom.com | Fall 2012 | Be published! See page 6.

I eventually earned my black belt and continue to not only take karate but teach other students to this day. Along this journey I also started to compete in karate tournaments. This required hundreds of hours of additional practice over the years, but it’s been really worth it. Last fall I took first place in my age division at the Diamond Nationals Karate Tournament in Minneapolis. This made me a World Champion Black Belt at 11 years old. Now that I’m twelve I’ve nearly achieved my second degree black belt and still on the “Road of Excellence.”

Black Belt By Ryder 14, Eustis, FL Bunk Roomie Writer You may think that being the son of a 6th degree black belt and the grandson of a 4th degree black belt is cool. And actually... it is! But there is a lot of hard work involved as well. Being the son of a black belt is no cake-walk. You may think, "Ahww, it would be so easy to get a black belt. Just show up and kick and punch." Now you would be partially right, but that is an understatement. You must have focus and discipline. There are five tenets we abide by: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. I think the most important one is Self-Control. To be successful in Tae-Kwon-Do you must control you body and not just hit everything as hard as you can. Now you might be thinking, "Isn't that the point of Martial Arts? To be able to knock people out?" Well, not quite. Tae-Kwon-Do teaches you that you need to always try to walk away before you fight. Only use your training when you really need to and when you are really in danger. Tae-Kwon-Do allows you to walk with confidence so it would be very rare for someone to want to challenge you in the first place. My dad, Master Gary Wayne, got his first black belt when he was fourteen. He was skinny kid tired of getting beat up for his lunch money. The cool thing is my grandpa took Tae-Kwon-Do with him and got a black belt when he was forty-two. They trained together for many years and it was a great bonding experience for them. Now, I am following in their footsteps as a 1st degree black belt and teaching Tae-Kwon-Do in my dads' busy Marital Arts school. Can you imagine teaching twenty elementary school kids all by yourself? Well I do it every day and it is actually a very rewarding experience. I earn a lot of respect and I have fun too! You should definitely try martial arts some time.

Bunk Roomies write Camp Adventures By Eddie 17, Orlando, FL Bunk Roomie Writer

Last summer, I had the amazing opportunity to attend camp at Florida Southern College String Workshop. A normal camp day would consist of getting up at 7 am and taking a shower in the dorm showers. They were heated by propane, so you had an infinite amount of hot water. Awesome! After, we would walk over to the cafeteria for breakfast. I usually had biscuits and gravy, or a bowl of fruit. Oh, and bacon. Lots and lots of bacon. After we finished breakfast, we would walk over to where we would have rehearsal. I rehearsed with Author Pranno, the camp director, on the stage of the college's performance hall. After a threehour morning rehearsal, we went into our chamber groups. My chamber group name was Mr.T's Red Headed Stepchild, in honor of our red headed principal violinist. Once chamber group was done, we walked back to the cafeteria for lunch. After lunch, back to rehearsal, and back onto the stage. After another three-hour string of rehearsals, we would go back to the dorms for afternoon activities. The activities were usually an outdoor activity like field games or swimming. After afternoon activities, we would go for dinner in the dorms. We usually got pizza, or ordered deli sandwiches. After dinner, we had an evening activity. My favorite evening activity was a toss up of the movie night, where we watched Nightmare Before Christmas and Up, or kickball. Once we were finished with evening activities, we went back to the dorms to clean up and go to bed for the routine to start up again at 7:00 the next morning.

Slice-O-Life Stories

The Bunk Roomies take their first steps into the reporting world by interviewing someone they know and turning it into an interesting article.

Fun-filled Childhood Memories By Becca 10, Concord, NC Bunk Roomie A-Team Writer

One of my favorite neighbors, Mrs. Robinson, lives next door to my house. She always has a big smile on her face and welcomes me to come and visit with her while petting her two dogs. The mother of two college-aged girls, Ashley and Alyssa, Mrs. Robinson lives in her house with her husband and her dogs, Beau and Belle. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Diane Robinson spent much of her childhood growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. Her favorite memories include playing instruments, riding her bike, cuddling with her dogs, and going to an amusement park with a best friend. As a kid, she learned to play many different instruments. The clarinet was the first one she tried, and later she learned to play the flute, the piccolo, and the piano. As a child, she enjoyed playing all of these instruments, and she remembers this with fondness. Mrs. Robinson’s light blue bicycle, with the word ‘Wildcat’ on the side and a long, white banana seat, is another favorite childhood memory. She recalls learning to ride the bike for the first time without training wheels. Feeling both scared and excited, she thought, “I’m going to ride my bike without training wheels!” Her father held the seat and said, “Keep on pedaling and you won’t fall!” Pushing her fast, her dad then let go, and off she went, with cheers from her family! Besides liking to ride her bike, Mrs. Robinson also adores dogs. As a child, her dream to have a dog of her own came true. Her dad, who was a great fan of a breed of dog called St. Bernard, bought one of their own that they named Sebastian. Later, she had another dog, Peewee, a gift her father received at work. As a puppy, she looked like a tiny golden doodle, but Peewee grew up to be big. These were the only dogs in her childhood, but as an adult, she had a dog named “Peaches” and in the last few years, a brother and sister, named Beau and Belle. Having a fun-filled and active childhood kept Mrs. Robinson happy and busy. Looking back on those years, she is happy for all those wonderful memories. Surrounded by a loving family and good friends, Mrs. Robinson was lucky to enjoy a fun, carefree, and memorable childhood.
