I would have to pick the future to see how far technology has advanced and improved. I would miss my family though!
WOW, that is hard... I would have to say "FUTURE!” Because I can see how much the world has progressed. Like the ride at Disney, Carousel of Progress. I like that one a lot. Plus I have so many dreams written down and I would love to see them all come true!
Megan 10, Apopka, FL I would go 200 years into the future because I would want to know what my kids’, kids,’ kids’ would look like. Samantha 10, Melbourne Beach, FL Neither! Why can't I stay here? Ha-ha! Well, I would have to say the future. So many people know about the past, but nobody TRULY knows what’s going to happen in the future...right? I will be able to see what people have accomplished and look back at my life to see MY personal accomplishments. Heaven 11, Melbourne, FL I would rather go 200 years into the future because I would want to see how my generation takes care of the world for the future generations. The Smarty Panthers program has really started to pick up steam. My mom and I started the program almost a year ago as a way for high school students to help elementary school students while earning volunteer hours in the process. It has greatly spread by word of mouth and through recognition from receiving The Jefferson

So, I encourage all high school students looking for volunteer hours, or just wanting to make a difference to take part in this and volunteer, even for just an hour and see if you don’t fall in love with the idea of helping someone as sweet as the kids that I have had the privilege of working with.
Day Ever
By Timmy 11, Apopka, FL Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic School
........................
My worst day ever was the day my daddy went away from home for a long time. My daddy is in the United States Air Force Reserves. When they say Reserves it means that he’s only in the military part-time. For me it sure doesn’t feel like part-time. On my worst day ever my daddy left to go to Afghanistan. He missed almost all of my first grade year!
My worst day started early. We got up early to go to the base. We all sat in a big room that was sort of like a movie theater. I just wanted to be home playing with my daddy because we only had a little time left before he had to leave. There were lots of families in the big room with us, but no one really felt like playing. We were sad and scared that our dads and even some moms were leaving again. I listened to the grown-ups talk about all of the shots my daddy needed to get to protect him from the terrible diseases they have in Afghanistan. It was scary to think about. My mommy told me that I shouldn’t be scared about that because the shots would protect him from the diseases, but I don’t know how they know that for sure. People get flu shots and still get the flu.
When we went outside the news reporters were there with a big line of trucks and buses. I watched my daddy load up all of his bags onto a big truck. I could tell his bags from everyone else’s because I used markers to draw pictures and messages on the outside of his duffle bags. The news reporter asked if she could interview me with my daddy. That means she wanted to talk to us to ask us how we felt about my daddy going to Afghanistan. I wanted to tell her the truth that I was sad and didn’t want him to go. But my mommy said that I had to be brave and tell the reporter that I am proud of my daddy and grateful that people like my daddy are willing to go to war to protect me and other Americans we don’t even know.
8 | TheBunkRoom.com | Nov/Dec 2012 | Be published! See page 5.
After the interview I hugged my daddy one last time and watched him leave on the bus. I was brave until I got in the car and then I cried all the way home because I knew that it was going to be a long time before I could see my daddy again. Some dads die over there and never get to come home.
I am proud of my daddy. I am grateful that people like my daddy are willing to go to war to protect us. I don’t know if strangers know how hard it is for kids like me to say good-bye to their dads when they leave. When my daddy left it was my worst day ever.

“Wake up! Wake up! It's Thanksgiving!” six year old Henry screams into my ear like a bullhorn in the middle of the night. As it's only five thirty in the morning and he
What a regular day is like.
was interrupting my sweet dreams, I grumbled, “Go away! Get back to bed! I don't want to get up. Go away!”
“But it's Thanksgiving!” the bullhorn sounds again. “I don't care,” I mumble. “Oh well,” he sighs as he stalks off. Then this same scene is repeated by my oldest brother, Jack, age nine, and my youngest brother, Benjamin, who is two, coming into my room to try to wake me. Finally, after much groaning, I get up, unprepared to do anything except eat breakfast. My mother is already up, ready to do the billion chores that “must be done” before the 30 or so guests arrive for our Thanksgiving feast. My opinion is that our family who arrive for lunch really do not care if there is dust underneath the chairs or the dishwasher is empty, but that is definitely not my mother's opinion.

Anyways, after a morning of chores, we get to my favorite part, which is setting the table. I just love creating pretty patterns with the beautiful china and napkins. Since the guests will be arriving any minute, I change out of my work clothes and go out to greet them. Forty-five minutes later, everyone is present and ready to consume the abundance of food. Roasted turkey. Baked ham. Tart cranberry sauce. Pecan, apple, and pumpkin pie. Deviled eggs. We definitely have a feast spread on the table! After lunch, my cousins, brothers, and I run out to play for the next five hours. We help my father build the biggest bonfire you have ever seen out in our sand pit. Eventually we eat a quick dinner of leftovers from lunch before lighting the bonfire. Slowly neighbors, friends, and family begin to arrive, carrying desserts to share and looking forward to sitting around the fire and going on a hayride. My brothers and I grab all the children who arrive for an attack on the dessert table. We also like to play jokes by snatching our parents' cups and switch their apple cider for cups of sand.
After an evening filled with play, hayrides, and marshmallow roasting the evening ends with people gradually leaving to return to their houses to go to bed. I always think, as I drift off to sleep, “This has been the best day of fall.” Tell us what your day is like! Submit your Day-to-Day article to us through our InBox at TheBunkRoom.com. the parks were about our ancestors that lived there before it became a state or county park, and all of the animals that lived at each one.
Things you put importance in somehow change.
By Gavin 12 & Sophie 7, White Cloud, MI Homeschooled Our mom and dad are artists. They travel all around Michigan selling their art at art shows. This was the year they decided to homeschool us so we could travel to Florida for the winter and sell art. Our time in Florida was not easy. Overall, it was very rewarding, but there were some challenges.
When we kayaked at Ft. De Soto we saw stingrays, sharks, dolphins and Lightning Whelks. While staying at Oscar Scherer, we saw the Florida Scrub Jay, and the Gopher Tortoise. The Scrub Jay is only located in a very small area. Wekiva Springs was the best mountain and street biking I’ve ever done. Snorkeling in the cool springs felt wonderful! The most unusual place that we stayed at was downtown South Miami, on the side of the road just behind Sunset Drive. It was like having a Condo in Downtown Miami! Driving in Miami, pulling our trailer was quite an adventure for my dad. The corners are sharp and the streets are tight. We parked behind the Winn Dixie, went to eat, saw a movie, and went to a candy store that had a five pound gummy bear. All only a two-minute walk away! Plus our spot in the art show was just out our door. The rough part was we didn't have air conditioning. It was 90 degrees outside and sleeping was sweaty.
We left Michigan the first week of October and headed south. The lessons that we learned started immediately. My dad has never pulled a travel trailer before. He learned that when the truck starts whining, and makes high pitched screaming noises while driving up the West Virginia Mountains, you need to down shift! As a family that homeschools, we stayed in as many parks as we could. Such as Ft. DeSoto, Oscar Scherer and Wekiva Springs.
From North to South Florida we looped the state three times meeting some of the greatest people at art shows and RV parks. Some of my experiences living in a 26 foot travel trailer started in my bedroom. It is 4 ½ feet wide and 6 feet long with bunk beds. We have a full kitchen and full bathroom. School is difficult for me in general because I have A.D.D. so it is very hard to focus while doing my work. I would take a break and eat every 2 hours. Learning independence on this trip was time well spent for me. My bedroom made for a cozy learning spot. The best times were after we would get our work done. We were usually only a few minutes from a beach. The best part about living in Florida was being by the water. Almost every day we went to the beach at low tide to walk in the shallows. It was so pleasurable swimming, walking and finding treasures. We would find beach glass and tiles that washed up. My mom and dad would use those found pieces in their art. I also very much liked staying at the Florida parks. Some of the things that I liked to learn at
During the shows Sophie and I taught ourselves to make balloon animals. We would walk around the art shows giving the balloon animals away. It made us feel so good! Sometimes we would make tips. One time we did so well we were able to pay for an air boat ride through the Everglades for the family with one and five dollar bills! If you have never been to an art show, you should go!
The five month trip went by fast; we do miss it. We have been home back for a month now. We like being back, but we like to travel too. My mom says, "We were immersed in the college of life.” Things you put importance in somehow change. Selling art was wonderful, but the opportunity of spending time together, on a learning adventure, was priceless!
Wonder where we will go next?

The peacefulness of fall is here; the leaves are turning and there’s a chill in the air. But there’s one day this season when it’s not too peaceful and quiet. That day is Sunday. That’s right, it’s football season! For five months the 32 teams in the NFL will face each other and battle for a chance to go to the Super Bowl and hold the storied Lombardi Trophy.
There is no rivalry in football that even comes close to this rivalry in passion and longevity. The Packers and Bears are in the same division so they play twice a year; these two games are circled on the calendar and anticipated by both teams and their fans.
On game day, the emotions of the teams and their fans are high, but none are nearly as high as when the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears face each other. The Packers vs. Bears is the NFL’s longest running rivalry. The teams have played an astounding 185 times, the most in NFL history since the two teams first squared off in 1921. According to a Green Bay Packers spokesperson, “They have played a total of 183 times (plus 2 playoff games) with the Packers winning 86, the Bears winning 91 and 6 ties being
The Packers / Bears rivalry is underscorded by games in which fans have felt “cheated” of victory. In the 70s and 80s, the rivalry heated up when the Packers consistently found themselves on the losing side. Those games inspired disdain from Packer players and fans alike.
seconds Packers quarterback Don Majkowski scrambled around the field for a receiver and threw a touchdown to win the game. At first it appeared that Majkowski had crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing the pass. The officials reviewed the play and deemed it a Packers touchdown, which won the game. Bears fans today still believe they were cheated out of a victory.
The winning tradition of both teams proves them both to be stellar contenders. Bears owner George Halas, Packers founder Earl “Curly” Lambeau and legendary coach Vince Lombardi, won a combined 19 NFL championships. In total, the teams have won a combined 22 NFL championships. The Packers have won an On the flip side, the Packers NFL record of 13 championships. The Bears dominated in the 90s and 2000s. One of the more memorable games in this rivalry have won nine. The NFL has 32 teams competing with each other with dreams to the go to the Super Bowl. Almost all of the teams are owned by a single major owner. All except one team. The Green Bay Packers defy the ordinary and are owned by the fans.
Hundreds of thousands of shares have been sold to keep the team operational and most recently to fund stadium expansions. For a few short months in 2011, the Packers offered and sold 250,000 shares for sale. This was the first time shares had been offered in more than a decade.
The Packers are the only professional sports team in the U.S that is community owned. Fans have coveted

shareholder came true during this unique stock offering as well. On Christmas morning of 2011, I spied one particularly interesting shipping envelope on my pile of presents. What awaited me shocked me and was a fantastic surprise! In my hands was my very own certificate of ownership in The Green Bay Packers. I was shaking and full of emotion as I had just become an owner of my favorite team!
FSU’s Bowden Inspires By Carolyn 13, Eustis, FL Eustis Middle School I recently went to an Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) luncheon and let me say, it inspired me in more ways than one. The event was hosted by Mr. Sammie Smith, a retired NFL player, who was extremely generous and down to earth. Although there were many guest speakers, the main speaker was Mr. Bobby Bowden. For those of you who may not know who that is, Mr. Bowden was the FSU football coach for 34 years. He didn't just coach though, he inspired thousands of athletes. And that's what he came to talk to us about.
The luncheon was amazing! Bobby Bowden told stories that touched everyone’s heart. But it wasn't stories about heroic touchdowns, or amazing passes. He told stories that enlightened all of us. The whole experience definitely opened my eyes, and made me thank
God for all that I am blessed with. I will be forever inspired, just from that hour and a half. As an athlete myself, I am thankful that there is a great club like FCA that brings religion and sports together. It was an overall beautiful experience, and I am so glad that I went! Mr. Bowden was an excellent speaker, a great football coach, but an even better man. He has touched hundreds of thousands of hearts, and inspired hundreds of thousands of souls. And I just think it is great for Mr. Bowden to travel around the country talking to people. It was a great honor to be able to listen to the legend, and I hope that I may be able to hear Mr. Bowden speak again.

I plan to win the lottery as soon as I turn eighteen and then after I graduate from college, I will live in a house in the middle of nowhere probably two or three stories high, with a nice mustang or Lamborghini outside my house in the separate garage that
also has two stories. The first floor of the garage room there will be all my fancy cars and in the upstairs is like an attic for stuff that I don’t plan on using anytime soon so I will just put all the random things around the house that I don’t need inside of this attic for my children to find one day when they go exploring to find treasure in the attic.

He also said that they are aggressive when they are young but grow calmer as they age
By Javelyn 10, Umatilla, FL Bunk Roomie JAy-Team Writer Round Lake Elementary I went to the Repticon (Reptile convention) in Orlando, Florida recently. I was hoping to get a carpet python, because they are beautiful.
I researched them and found some sites that said that they range from 6 to 8 feet in length. Carpet pythons in general belong to the Morelia Spilota species and include a diverse group, such as Diamond Pythons, Coastal Carpet Pythons, Irian Jaya Pythons and Jungle Carpet Pythons. Jungle carpet pythons are growing in popularity, because with their pattern of vibrant yellow stripes against a deep, velvetblack background, they live up to their namesake and look like a fine Middle Eastern carpet; a piece of art. Eventually I did find a booth with a carpet python for only $75 dollars
It is 3 feet long, one year old and a beautiful snake. I named him Nagini after Voldemort’s giant and venomous snake Nagini from the Harry Potter movies/books. Pythons and boas are non-venomous. My Nagini was and is aggressive when not fed properly, but when he is fed he is very calm. He eats small rats about 2 inches not including the tail. That size is still a baby for rats.
A snake’s only weapon is its mouth so it has to feel completely safe before it eats anything. He eats once a week.

Overall, the experience changed me and reminded me why I want to attend the Academy after my senior year. After I flew home from the Academy, I switched gears to return to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar for Mid-Florida at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg.
My experience this year was even better than I could have imagined. The opportunity to help this year’s ambassadors grow into leaders and see the changes they went through during the weekend was a humbling experience. It’s hard to believe that that was me one year ago.

king. He is the rock of everything else. He is very strong. I obey and protect my mother and family like a knight for his king. When my family is upset or sad and going through rough times, I say ‘’it will be okay’’ and I take care of them.
In the future I think a knight would protect using a double laser sword and a mega speed hover craft, similar to a police man who is loyal and strong.
I would be the knight because the knight sounds like someone you would want to be one of your best friends and that is like me and I know that because when my best friend was having family troubles, I was the first one he called. I have awesome friends. I think I’m the knight because I like to help and defend people. I like to help the homeless and be generous. I love people and I have a good personality

A knight always tries his best. He just tries to bring his ‘’A’’ game to everything. I like to do that and I try my best at everything that I do and show what I’ve achieved. A knight does that exact thing. If I was a knight, I would take it head-on and take it seriously and I would be loving it and taking it in all the time. So, those are the cherishing reasons I would be a knight in real life.

SNAP!Lasting Beauty!
By Heaven 11, Melbourne, FL Homeschooled I find the perfect subject. A beautiful flower. I zoom in . . . let the camera focus. Then, Snap! Another beautiful picture. I’m in my garden with my camera searching for anything worth looking at. Ohhh… that’s really pretty. The sun is setting and the trees are silhouetted against the sky. I snap a pic.
I love taking pictures. It’s such a good feeling when you capture a lasting image for everyone to enjoy. The moment you see a hummingbird on your window sill or the sap seeping out of a log, shining in the sunlight. . .The second when the wind blows the trees just the right way, or when the sun hits the water while it sets in the distance . . . Wow, what a sight.
I hope everyone can get that feeling of accomplishment and pride at least once. Maybe you don’t like to take photos, maybe you like to draw or play football. Imagine the feeling when you execute a play JUST RIGHT or draw something better than ever before and someone you don’t know loves it. Isn’t that a great feeling? I sure think so. Every time I take one of those perfect pictures I get that feeling and that’s why I love photography.

Xylophone Mania! By Jackson 9, Mount Dora, FL Bunk Roomie JAy-Team Writer Round Lake Elementary
This year in the 4th grade, I joined a music ensemble group called the “Orfffins.” “Orff” is the name of the company that makes our school’s musical instruments and “fins” is a reminder that our school’s mascot is the dolphin. My music teacher’s name is Mrs. Frasier. Everyone in the group plays the xylophone.
We are learning multiple songs for a concert that we are going to play in December. The latest song that we learned is called the “Long Legged Sailor.” The words go like this: “Have you ever, ever, ever, ever in your long-legged life met a long-legged sailor with a longlegged wife?” I think it’s a strange song! It’s hard to play on the xylophone, too! Our group meets every Tuesday and Thursday morning before school. Each class is 45 minutes long. Mrs. Frasier taught us how to hold the xylophone mallets by telling us to remember, “Pinch, Grasp, Ride the Bike.” First we should pinch the mallets one inch from their base. Then, we close our hands around them and grasp them firmly so they will make a good sound when we hit the xylophone with them. Then, we move our hands into a position like we’re riding a bike to play. When we strike the xylophone, we should aim for the middle of the bars, not the bottom or top. That makes a better sound. I’m excited about the concert in December and hope that everyone remembers their part.

One of his favorite parts of The USA Cup is pin trading. “The pin trading is a hobby. When I come back home from the USA cup I like to show off my pins,” Drew said. The teams trade different pins from their countries. His team won against Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Australia and
When Drew gets older he wants to be in the Olympics and play in The World Cup. His advice to everyone is, “When you feel like giving up, keep on trying. Sometimes when we play against the second Mexican team and they are beating us, I feel like giving up, but I keep on trying no matter what happens.”
Habilis means “handyman” and dates back to the classification of early man, known as Homo Habilis. That’s when man started using tools and became pretty handy around the house. We have our own resident Habilis man, in boy size: Benjamin.
