Ahhhh (sigh of relief), I hear that a lot of people are enjoying the change of weather already. Fall is creeping in. What are your favorite things about fall? For me it is Michigan football, comfortable evenings on the pool deck, bon fires, Epcot Food & Wine Festival, and making memories with friends and family. There are lots of great things happening with The Bunk Room-North Lake. As we continue you grow, I am proud to say we are up to a 32 page edition!! Our local Bunk Roomies were in the Mount Dora 4th of July parade, and also helped out with the Empty Bowls Ice Cream Event. We had our first fundraising event for Deliver the Difference in August, and it was a success. Now we are gearing up for our Family Fashion Show fundraiser for Children With Hairloss and our Black Friday Vendor Event. With each new issue, it just gets more and more exciting. We have so many great kids sharing a part of them with us and we are working on some future events that I know the kids will LOVE!! Don’t forget to like us on Facebook at “The Bunk Room North Lake” so you can keep up with all the happenings.

Nervous determination blankets the room. The sound of pencils furiously scribbling prevail as one voice cuts powerFL fully through the , ra o D t by 18, M Erik Sla or In Chief tension-filled Edit room. We’re all listening on the edge of our seats, taking notes of the professor’s lecture. This is the typical scene in a law school class; not much different than any classroom I would guess. I’m in my first year as a law student at Florida A&M University College of Law. It’s been a big change for me because I don’t have much experience with being in a classroom as I’ve been homeschooled my whole life. Most of my classes I took for my undergraduate degree were online. This classroom thing is a whole new world for me. Every morning I get up around 5

Tank Erik's Think

am and by about 6:30 am, I’m out the door and on the way to Orlando. I get to school about two hours before class starts so I have time to review the reading and take notes on the chapter just so that I’m better prepared for class. Class is definitely very interesting and nerve-wracking because while the professors are lecturing, they can stop at any given moment and ask you a question so you have to be prepared. It’s nice to take a break from my piles of law book to read all our articles in The Bunk Room. This issue has some standouts for sure: Kathleen’s article about making gory cuts and bruises is perfect timing for Halloween and has given me some great ideas. And if anyone ever said you’re too young to do something, just read our cover feature on Jack Andraka. See how he’s blown through barriers at 15, creating a cheap and effective test for cancer. Keep on sending in articles! I need a break from all my legal reads! Over and out!

No, seriously. . . it’s just makeup! By Kathleen Parra 14, Leesburg, FL Smith Prep I have always loved makeup, but when I learned you could do creepy things with it, I got so excited! Working with those eyeshadow colors no one uses and making them into wounds was so neat. This summer I learned how to create bruises, cuts and burns. It was amazing. Bruises are so fun to create. Mine consist of four colors. They are a red-ish maroon, a dark green, yellow and black. All you really need is eyeshadow. You can use eyeshadow, or you can get something called a bruise wheel. It

Learn How-To!

is a special kind of makeup with the colors I just told you about and it helps make a bruise. Your creepy bruises will be a great way to freak out friends and family Bruises are not the only thing you can do with makeup though. Cuts happen to be my favorite. Whether it is a deep wound with glass sticking out, or ripped, infected skin, it is so much fun to create.

To make a cut, all you need is red lip liner, black eyeliner, petroleum jelly mixed with red food coloring and CD case pieces. All of these items are cheap and easy to find in most stores. I have not been able to get all the items to make the ripped, infected skin, but if you would like to try it, you will need liquid latex, black and green

Burns

•To make a burn you must fill a cup to your knuckle with water. • Then add a packet of unflavored gelatin. • After that, mix and mix until it becomes goopy. • When it reaches the right texture, add oats. • Rub that mixture on your skin. • Last, you add foundation and make a bruise around it.

Cuts

• To make a cut, draw a black line on your arm.

eyeshadows, your color foundation, toilet paper, and fake blood. It is easy to find tutorials to do this on YouTube. Cuts are a fun way to scare pretty much anyone! Another great way to creep out your friends is by making burns. I warn you that if you make your burn too thin it will hurt to take off. Burns are so fun and easy. All you need are oats, unflavored gelatin, foundation, green eyeshadow, and if you want to make it really gory you can make a bruise underneath. Sounds simple right? It’s quite fun too. Now you know a few ways to make bruises, cuts and burns. Now you can complete your Halloween costume or even just walk around the mall scaring everyone in sight. Below are the tutorials for these gory effects. Enjoy!

Bruises

• To make a bruise you must first gather your colors. Deep red, dark green, yellow, and black eyeshadows will work. • When you have your colors together, find a clean, clear spot on the part of your body you wish to make your bruise on. Use your finger to dab the red in a circle or oval making it look messy. Remember, you do not want it to look nice. Do not blend yet. • Next you take the green and dab around parts of the inside and outside of your red circle. Blend a little. • After that you dab some black all over and around the red and green, but do not overdo it. • Your next step is to dab yellow in the middle of the circle and around the edge. Lightly blend and ta-da! It is complete.

YouTube.com/TBRKids

• Trace around the black line with red lip liner. • Mix petroleum jelly with red food coloring and toilet paper chunks. • Then you place the jelly on the red on your arm. • In the middle where your black line is, you place CD case pieces.

During my older brother’s game Caleb, Cristal, and I all play at the bars. We would play in the woods but Caleb is too afraid and not allowed in the woods. We act like bats most of the time. Caleb is either Cristal’s or my baby. A ball makes it looks like we are really pregnant. With the bars it feels like we’re bats.

Jack featured here in an ad for Intel.

Determined To Innovate By Benjamin Slaby 15, Mount Dora, FL Bunk Roomie Writer / Homeschooled When you think of the word scientist the first image that pops into your head is usually a scary old guy with crazy hair in a lab coat. But Jack Andraka is no old man. At 15 years old, Jack has created a way to quickly and efficiently detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer. Inspired by the death of a close family friend from pancreatic cancer, Jack put on his lab coat and began to search for a better way to detect a cancer that kills 100 people every day. Jack has been interested in science since he was 11 years old when he entered in his first science fair. Jack and his family are science aficionados. Jack’s project to detect these cancers really got rolling when he finally got lab space at John Hopkins University after 199 other labs turned down his request. He immediately got to work. Jack spent many months at the lab, many times all night long.

14 | TheBunkRoom.com Oct / Nov 2013

Jack says that he could have never finished this project without the support of his family and especially his mother who drove to the lab and back and sat in the car while he did his research. Jack’s original goal was to see if he could make a simple, inexpensive sensor to detect pancreatic cancer, because too many people were dying. It wasn’t as easy as he thought it would be. Seven months later, after testing thousands of samples, Jack found the missing link! He was skeptical, so he tested it one more time and it worked again! It was the middle of the night and there Jack stood, alone and ecstatic in the lab, glowing in the joy that one of his scanners worked! He jumped around the lab in excitement and ran out to his mom and told her the news. “That is the best feeling for any scientist.” This device works by using carbon nanotube technology that only reacts to a certain protein in the blood that is only found in patients with certain cancers. When these proteins come in contact with the carbon nanotubes they create a small

enough charge to be read by a ohm reader. An ohm reader is a simple electrical tester that anyone can get at a home improvement store. Jack’s test is 168 times faster than what is currently available. It’s 26,000 times less expensive at only 3 cents. And, it’s potentially 100% accurate. Plus it’s very easy to make. “Making the sensor is as easy as making a batch of cookies, you boil some water. Throw in some nanotubes and some antibodies and then dip in the strip and shake it off and you are ready to go.” Jack said he hopes the product will be on the market within about 10 years but until then he is going to be working on other remarkable things. Since his discovery, a little more than a year ago, Jack has won the INTEL young scientist award of $75,000 and has been sharing his story all over the world in TED conferences as well as meeting with dignitaries both here at home and abroad. He’s met with President Obama, spoken at

I didn’t even know what a pancreas was.” 15 year old Jack Andraka, scientist and determined innovator ... Creator of a test that detects pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancers with pinpoint accuracy. And, it costs only 3 cents to make.

the United States Congress, met with the British Parliament and also the United Nations, to name a few. Jack encourages kids to get involved with science and has candidly remarked that if kids have the time to post duck face pictures on Instagram, then they have time to do something big. “I learned so much just from the internet. When I started my research I didn’t even know what a pancreas was.” This just shows how much you can learn if you just apply yourself. Jack said most of his research was through Google and Wikipedia.

School for any kid can be hard and time consuming and especially if you’re a cancer researcher that is traveling the world. Jack has struck a deal with the principal at his Maryland high school. The deal is that Jack’s grades are based completely on tests and quizzes. This means that he has to take many tests all at once to make up his grades.

Busy Jack!

Jack says that his work really hasn't changed his social life that dramatically. While doing his research he still makes time on the weekends to go see a movie with his

friends and have fun. Most of his friends didn't even know what he was doing.

Jack is now working on a new device for another competition. The device is about the size of an iPhone that you can scan over your wrist that will be capable of detecting almost any disease. This is an incredible journey that Jack has been on and he is definitely someone that has proved perseverance, curiosity and access to the internet can change the world!

Hearts, Hope and Hair Covering young heads to heal young hearts.

By Emma Gazdecki 13, Eustis, FL

Chemotherapy is a treatment for cancer. Regina said “people start to lose their hair 14 days after chemotherapy.”

Homeschooled / Bunk Roomie Writer For Regina Villemure, making a difference started when her niece was diagnosed with leukemia at three years old. Leukemia is cancer of the blood; her blood was 95% cancerous and had to undergo five years of treatment.

Regina spent a lot of time at The Children’s Hospital in Detroit, MI. Being there, she saw lots of kids with cancer. “If the kids had (a wig to wear,) it was something an older woman would wear. It was not pretty; they did not have flat pretty hair (like a child would have).” As a professional hair stylist, Regina was inspired to help. After her niece was done with chemotherapy, Regina started to take classes in hair replacement. “Seeing what my sister had to go through emotionally and financially, I wanted to make a difference.” Insurance does not pay for the hair replacements, as they call it cosmetic. Because of that, Regina wanted to give to kids what most families could not afford so she created Children With Hairloss (CWHL), a non-profit organization that gives hair replacements to children with hair loss at no charge to any family. The idea took off! When jobs were hard to find and the economy was bad, donations decreased so they had a waiting list of over seventy-five kids. Even though the hair replacements are free to every family, CWHL still has to pay for the hair replacements to be made which is about $1,000 per child. Regina is proud to say they have worked through all of the kids who were in need. “We give out over 300 hair replacements per year.” CWHL not only provides full-headed pieces, but they make custom hair pieces for burn victims. Once Regina got a call from a principal because there had been a really bad fight at the school and a girl had a chunk of hair pulled out. Regina had a hairpiece made

just for her. No child has ever been turned away. How many hair donations does it take to make a hair replacement? It depends on how thick the hair is. Thin hair takes about 12 to 13 hair donations while thick hair takes about two to three hair donations to make a hair replacement. CWHL gets a mail tub full of donations about twice a week. Volunteers sort the hair by length and color. “We need longer hair!” Regina said. Kids are asking for longer hair, but if people keep donating eight inches of hair, the hair on the wig is only eight inches long. If you are thinking or going to donate your hair or know someone who is going to donate her hair tell her to grow it out longer. CWHL even gets donations and recipients from beyond the United States. They have gotten donations and recipients from Iceland, Canada, China, Netherlands, Italy, Mexico, England, and Australia. And every day, they get at least one child that needs help.

One girl received a hair replacement from CWHL and at school, two girls walked up to her and ripped the hair piece off of her head and cut it up with a scissor. When the principal heard about it, he told the girl “to live with it.” Later that day, her mom called Regina crying and told her what happened. Regina wanted to call the principal, but the mom didn't let her. Regina then gave the girl another hair piece, even though she only qualifies for a new one yearly. Even though CWHL helps 10 or more kids per week, Regina wants to do more. One girl at St. Jude Hospital loves to braid her sister’s hair but she has no hair to braid herself. So when Regina was in Tennessee for a convention, she delivered the hair replacement to the girl personally. But St. Jude said that if Regina wanted to support St. Jude patients, she would have to provide 350 hair replacements twice a year! Right now, CWHL gives away 300 hair replacements per year. It is a big goal, but Regina knows that anything is possible.

DEBATE

We got involved in the Knoxville Guardian Debate Club.

Justin &

Jordan

By Jordan Brown 15, Knoxville, TN Homeschooled This past year, my brother Justin and I have been involved in speech and debate. We’re involved with the National Christian Forensics Communications Association (NCFCA).

This year was Justin’s second year of debate, while it was my first. At the beginning of the year when Justin asked me to be his partner, I said, “Absolutely not!” I used to HATE government policy. Speaking in front of a crowd terrified me as well. As time went on though, I began to think debate would be a beneficial skill to have. It would also look good on a college application. I reluctantly accepted Justin’s request.

Every year there is a resolution or a topic. This year the resolution for Team Policy debate surrounded the idea of the United Nations being reformed or abolished. All Team Policy teams chose a case that they would like to “run” for the whole year to reform or abolish the United Nations.

At tournaments, you don’t know if you will be selected to go affirmative, or negative. If you’re affirmative, you run your case to significantly reform the United Nations in some way, and the selected negative team has to tell the judge why it is not justified to pass the affirmative team’s plan.

This refuting goes over an hour in a debate “round.” Each team member has to give two speeches in a round; an 8-minute constructive and a 5-minute rebuttal. Both teams have essential evidence from intellectual scholars and advocates supporting their claims as to why voting negative or affirmative is justified.

22 | TheBunkRoom.com Oct / Nov 2013

The more I researched the United Nations, the more I became intimidated. Things became difficult. I begun to think I couldn’t effectively do my homework assignments. I started to doubt myself and even thought about quitting. I was surrounded by people who cared about me and encouraged me to keep on, so I did.

Unfortunately, we didn’t qualify for Nationals, but iIt was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

At the state tournament in Memphis, we won enough debate rounds to qualify for the regional tournament in Montgomery, AL. We were frantic with excitement. All our hard work had finally paid off.

I have learned countless things. I have learned the importance of teamwork. In team policy, it is essential to know how to work with your teammate. Although this was difficult at times, now I can effectively work with and communicate better with my brother and with others.

I never thought I’d meet so many awesome people. Though tournaments are stressful at times, you also get the opportunity to establish friendships and have a load of fun.

Most of all though, I believe the biggest benefit to being involved in debate this year, is that I learned the importance of never giving up. If you’re hesitant to get involved in something that intimidates you, but you want to be involved, don’t ever stop following your dreams! You never know what benefits you might receive after you’ve gone through the hardships. Difficult times are most often the times when you thrive, learn and grow.

Try It. You’ll Like It. By Jay Schuffenhauer 17, Apple Valley, MN Eastview High School “My parents made me do it.” This is what I used to say with a grimace, when asked why I joined the Eastview High School (EVHS) debate team in ninth grade. Now, when I’m asked the same question, I give the same reply – but with a smile. Why? This past season, my debate partner, Cara Desmond, and I took varsity second place at the Minnesota Classic Debate State Tournament.

varsity, and novice -- board a bus almost every Saturday at 7 a.m. and return to EVHS around 5 p.m. It’s a long but mentally stimulating day. Keeping track of every argument that your opponent makes during a round is no small task, not to mention quickly sorting through a personal file box to find credible evidence to refute your opponent’s points. This challenge brings out my competitive spirit -- a necessary trait to be a topnotch debater.

Each debate duo participates in four rounds and is expected to argue both the affirmative and negative positions in the same tournament. Being part of a debate team takes dedication and diligence. We are not allowed to use personal computers during rounds, so most debaters carry small file boxes filled with note cards representing 40+ hours of advance research.

EVHS Coach Todd Hering expects his debaters to make regular contributions to a major pool of shared evidence. The Classic Debate duos -- varsity, junior

Another necessary characteristic to be a successful debater is a love of current events. At the beginning of this past season, I knew next to nothing about the war on drugs. A month and a half later, I had acquired an in-depth knowledge of both domestic and international drug policy.

Over the past three years, I’ve gone from being an ambivalent freshman debater to a captain of the EVHS Classic Debate team. As team captain, I’ve had the opportunity to coach and mentor both novice and junior varsity debaters and see first-hand how an “all for one and one for all philosophy” has resulted in EVHS becoming a top-ranked forensics school in the country. My debate career to date isn’t at all what I anticipated at the beginning of ninth grade – a fact which makes me smile.

First, I should explain how Classic Debate works. During the season, which runs from September through December and is split in half, we debate two different controversial topics. These topics are called resolutions and typically center on current events, such as gun control and the war on drugs. Each duo must gather, in advance, extensive evidence to support both the affirmative and negative sides of the resolution. During a round, there are two opposing duos; one of which has been assigned the affirmative position, and the other, the negative position. At the end of a round, which lasts one hour, a judge determines the winner based on a point system.

Once in a Lifetime!

Road T

By Nic Quillin 14, Onalaska, WI Onalaska Middle School There it was, the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. After five hours of continuous driving from Onalaska, Wisconsin, my family was finally there. The first thing we did was go to the world’s tallest tower, the Sears Tower. It is now called the Willis Tower.

When we entered the Willis Tower, we had to get in a long windy line to take the elevator up to the Sky Deck floor. As we entered the elevator, the employees kept pushing us together like sardines. Thank goodness the elevator accelerated very fast, so fast that our ears popped. Once we got up to the Sky Deck, my heart sank like a submarine. There were so many people I thought we were never going to get to the Ledge. I pondered the thought we would just have to leave. After five minutes of pushing and shoving, we finally made it to the Ledge. The Ledge is a glass box that extends 4.3 feet from the actual tower. We could almost see all of Chicago! When I looked down, I just about threw up. We were so high I did not want to go on, but my mom said, “It is a once in a lifetime experience.” So, I went on. We were 1,353 feet up on the 103rd floor. When we were out on the Ledge, my mom, dad, sister and I put our feet together and snapped a picture of them.

Once we were off the Ledge, we stayed on the Sky Deck. There was a gift shop we went to. I bought a replica of the Willis Tower. I bought it to remember the experience. We saw many other attractions during our stay such as The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and the Museum of Science and Industry. I learned a lot of things during my trip to Chicago. One of the things I learned is that if you are provided an opportunity to do something that may never come along again- go for it! You might be glad you did.

“Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.” ― Theodore Roosevelt By Alyssa 10, Minneola, FL Minneola Elementary

I want to talk about bullying. I want to prevent bullying because I have been bullied and it is not fun. I mostly get bullied by my classmates and when that happens I feel heartbroken and I do not want that to happen with other kids.

So, if you see a kid getting bullied, don’t stand there and watch; go tell an adult or teacher. You should never see a fight or someone bulling another kid. A lot of older kids do that to younger kids because they are so small and it’s really sad. I hope that it does not happen by you. Bullying is a serious issue in schools across the nation. Visit StopBullying.gov for more information on standing up for what’s right.

Blog Excerpt . . . Ballet has finally started! It’s a little overwhelming, but, I think I can do it. My teacher was just showing us pictures of other girls. There was one picture of a girl and her leg was in the air and her leg was by her ear, 180 degrees turned out. Oh how much I would want that. My teacher thinks ALL of us can achieve that by the end of the year. Yikes! I think I can do it. I just have to work even harder. In my room, I have two walls covered in ballet pictures. I want more so I can see myself in everyone of them. I have to work harder.

My teacher asked us what our goals are… I have made six and told her. She said that is exactly what I need to work on. I suggest that at the beginning of the season, write all of your goals and review them every day. Good luck!

So, I made a Go to thebun kroom.com decision while sitting and click on BL OGS. in the lobby of my dad’s work one day. I decided that I was going to do a T5 conversion. A T5 conversion is where you convert the transmission from an automatic 3 speed to a manual 5 speed. The reason you do this is mostly for the fun factor of shifting gears. The other reason is for the highway cruise-ability. The T5 transmission allows you to shift up to a higher gear so that you can go faster at a lower engine RPM. This saves tons of gas and stress on the motor. I bought myself a 5 speed transmission out of an ‘85 Fox Body Mustang for $200. It had a Hurst shifter which is much better than the original shifter. When car guys see a Hurst shifter they think it’s cool. I was super excited! During this time, I have also gotten the 351W that I pulled from a FORD 250 pickup looking beautiful (See more about my other projects I’ve done to help fund this Mustang Restore in my blog.) I got the intake and waterpump all sand blasted and painted silver. I painted the Edelbrock logo red so it will look snazzy! I also painted the rest of the engine black and put it all together and it looks amazing! Read TheBunkRoom.com and click on Blogs.

Baby Brother Surprise!

By Camryn Lane 10, Maitland, FL One Saturday morning, Mom came into the room that my brother and I were in and told us that we were having a new baby brother! My brother and I did not believe her because Mom jokes a lot, so my brother and I chuckled.

“When is he going to be born?” my brother asked.

“Me neither!” Mom and my brother said as we all sat down on the couch.

“No,’’ we said with a grin on our faces.

Three weeks later… “Ahhhhhhhhhh!’’ Mom screamed. Dad, my brother, and I all ran into the room like a lightning bolt.

Mom chuckled. “Feel my stomach,” she said with a look on her face that said she was going to prove us wrong.

“What happened?” Dad asked.

“I’m having the baby!”

“Ok, breathe,” I told Mom.

So we did, and we felt something kicking. “Mom,” I said touching her shoulder, “You’re going to have a baby!’‘

Dad went to go get the car. My big brother grabbed the bags. I had to keep Mom comfortable and told her to keep breathing as if I was a doctor.

“So, what’s his name?’’ my brother asked.

“Chancellor,’’ Mom said.

26 | TheBunkRoom.com Oct / Nov 2013

They then put Mom on the bed with wheels. They were running fast but we kept up with them. When we got to the room we all waited outside. About one minute later, there was a “waaaaaaaaa’’ coming out of the room.

“So you don’t believe me?” Mom asked.

“In three weeks,” Mom answered. “Well, I can’t wait!’’ I said.

“I know, I just told you that,’’ replied Mom.

didn’t take a long time for us to get there. When we got to the hospital, Dad told the doctor that Mom was in labor.

Hmmmmm… I thought to myself, “That sounds like a long name. I’ll just call him Chance,” I replied.

Dad came back in the house and carried Mom out of the house and into the car as my brother and I ran behind them. We didn’t live far from the hospital so it

We all rushed into the room pushing and shoving... And there was my baby brother in Mom’s arms! Dad and my brother got to hold him, then it was my turn, and I got to hold him. “You’re so cute Chancellor, I mean, Chance.”

I whispered to my new baby brother. “I will never forget the time I gave you a nickname. And, I will never forget the time when you were born.” My baby brother was born on November 1, 2007. I will always remember that special day when my brother was born.

Mmm! Strawberries!

By Jackson Polk 10, Mount Dora, FL Bunk Roomie Writer / Round Lake Elementary

Have you ever been to Oak Haven Farms in Sorrento, Florida? Well, I have. It was started in 1996 and is open on the weekends from late December to late March. I went there with my family to pick strawberries. When we got there, we were handed cardboard boxes to fill with our berries. We were led to an area where the strawberries were ripe and ready for picking. The guy that gave us the boxes put a flag in the dirt to let us know which row we could pick in. My strategy was to pick the big ones. They were filled with juice and were very sweet! After we filled our boxes, we got hungry! We took our strawberries to be weighed, so we knew how much to pay for them. Then, we put them in the car. We were hungry so we decided to get hot dogs for lunch. At Oak Haven Farms, you can cook your own hot dog over an open fire. They gave us metal sticks with a wooden handle at the end to hold our hot dogs over the fire. My brother Clayton burned his, but it was still delicious.

For our drinks, we had strawberry milkshakes! They tasted very sweet and creamy. After lunch, we went to the farm’s playground and played on a big, black tire swing. After we played a little bit, we went on a hayride. We rode past the vineyard where the farm owners grow grapes to make wine. We didn’t drink any wine. After the hayride, we went on a zip-line where we went backwards and forwards. It was a thrilling air-pushing event! At the end of the day, my mom made us homemade whipped cream and we ate the freshly picked strawberries with it. Yum!

Slice-O-Life Stories

The Bunk Roomies take their first steps into the reporting world by interviewing someone they know and turning it into an interesting article.

It all started with some Milkweed... By Emma Gazdecki 13, Eustis, FL Bunk Roomie Writer / Homeschooled Orange, black, and white are the colors of the monarch butterfly... this is Lily Heath’s favorite kind of butterfly. Lily likes butterflies because they are pretty and she loves it when they fly. It started last year at Lily’s grandma’s house. Lily, her mom, and her little sister Ellie found 10-20 little white monarch eggs on their grandma’s milkweed plants in July. They thought it would be fun to raise the butterflies so they took the leaves with eggs on them and put them in containers which will then hatch in 2-3 days. Monarch season for Michigan is July through October.

Madi is one of their friends and she died of cancer last year. They raised about 50 butterflies last year. Lily says “The butterfly’s legs are pokey. They use their legs to climb.” When Lily holds butterflies she holds them by their wings. If the butterflies do not want to go they stay until they do. The butterfly that they had the longest hatched in July and they let it go around Thanksgiving. Lily also gave us a tip: “Do not shake the butterfly house when the butterflies are drying their wings.” Lily’s favorite part of raising butterflies is when they come out of their chrysalis and when she lets the butterflies go. Lily owns a FIVE STAR butterfly hotel!

After the eggs hatch, Lily puts the caterpillars in the butterfly house and she feeds them milkweed leaves. She has two milkweed plants at her house and two at her grandma’s house. Milkweed does not sound like a pretty plant but Lily says “It is pretty. I like the pretty white flowers.” When they are butterflies Lily feeds them fruit juice on a sponge. Lily and Ellie name most of their butterflies Madi.

Dreaming of Paris! By Larissa Foxx 9, Mount Dora, FL Bunk Roomie Writer Montessori at Roseborough

Ever since I was three, I had a dream: To go to Paris, France to see the Eiffel Tower. So one day, I suddenly decided to put my dream into action. I saved almost all my money for plane tickets and I can't wait to go in two years! That's right, only two years and I will be on the very top of the Eiffel tower! So how much do I like the Eiffel Tower anyway? Well so much that everything in my room has the Eiffel tower on it I mean everything; posters, jewelry and even my lamp! Speaking of jewelry, I have one very special Eiffel Tower necklace that I hardly ever take off. So I guess I have told you enough about my dream. Paris here I come!
