reaching more of you, our fantastic writers are enjoying even more exposure. Opportunities abound at The Bunk Room! And that’s not all! We are also expanding nationally! Every month we’re so humbled and amazed by the growth of The Bunk Room. Since created by our two sons in their bunk beds in the fall of 2007, our family has been taken in by the magic of The Bunk Room. One simple newsletter, created by kids, with the passion of Benjamin Franklin, has blossomed into magazine with a network of publishers in communities all over the country. For years we plugged away uploading issue after issue online, feeling the joy of showcasing kids from coast to coast, but never really knowing where it would lead. In all that time, an actual perfectly capable digital readers, the touch, feel and smell of that printed page transforms. Now tens of thousands of people nationwide are feeling that energy that only a printed piece can bring. For that I am wildly in awe and pinching myself for a dream come true. As one dream comes true, more dreams unfold. It’s never-ending. The magic of The Bunk Room will keep growing because of the one thing I’ve learned for sure. All dreams do come true. You just have to stick with them!

Oh my goodness gracious… it's November! This has to be my favorite month. Perfect weather, Swim Team (I'm Co-Captain this year!), Ballet, Orchestra and most importantly… Halloween! I'm super excited for Halloween. I'm planning to dress up as Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge (Helllooo… Kate Middleton!) I've already got the shoes, the ring and the hair. All I need to do is find a dress… hmmmm.
Our Bunk Roomies meetings have gotten bigger and bigger each time we get together. It's so exciting to see everything Editor-in-Chief come together! All of us at The Bunk Room would love for all our contributors to come to our meetings. We have so much fun and you can attend even if you don't live in the area… technology is so amazing! :)
We’ve got some great features this issue. From a trip to the Empire State building, to a trip to Malawi, Africa, we are sharing some great adventures. I absolutely love our Pop Survey feature. We’ve got a couple of funny questions and I love reading everyone’s answers... I always get some great laughs! Participating in our surveys are a great and easy way to get in the issue. Plus, there fun to do as well! :D
I’m so excited for the future of The Bunk Room. We’re getting many new publishers around the country. It’s so incredibly AwEsOmE! If you are reading this issue in print, Woo Hoo! If you’re interested in publishing in your area, or know someone who might, contact mark@thebunkroom.com. Smiles! ~Margo

15th Century Dessert: Fool By Sophia 11, Coral Gables, FL Fool is an elegant dessert made as far back as the 15th century. I have tried Fool and it is fit for kings and queens. It is said that the name comes from when children ate it, they went outside and ran in again to eat more, acting like a fool. Fool is made with berries, sugar and cream. It is a cold dessert and I will give you the recipe. Ingredients: 1 lb. of fresh berries (such as, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries) 2 tablespoon water ½ cup sugar ½ pint cream (whipped) Cook berries in water and push through a sieve. Whip cream. Add together. Place in fancy glasses. Chill.
That is how to make Fool. I think you should try it.

Pet Loss Then Happy Ending By Madison 12, Sorrento, FL I was so sad. It as one of the most horrible things that had ever happened to me. One day, a little while ago, my Mama went out to see our three bunnies. When she cam back into the house, she told me that she had a feeling that one of the bunnies was dead. She explained that there was a bad smell and flies all around the entrance to their burrow. Naturally, we both went back out so I could see for myself, and sure enough it was true. We had to go because Mama had to take me to ballet, so my brother Luke said that he would open up part of the burrow and see if he found anything. On our way to ballet I told the four other girls that were going with me about it, and they all thought it was really sad. When Mama picked me up later that day, I was dying to know what had happened. With great sadness, she informed me that Luke had found one of the three bunnies, and she didn't

have a head. We still don't know what happened, but we think it must have been a raccoon. Nobody ever found the other missing bunny, which happened to be my bunny. That made me even more sad. Mama was looking online for new bunnies and found out that a lady was giving away two female bunnies, which was what we wanted. A couple of days later, we met up with her and picked up the bunnies. Now we have a mama and a baby, and all three of them are getting along splendidly.
Pop Survey! What is your neighborhood like? Lots of little kids. Megan 16, Lakeville, MN My neighborhood has a family with kids across the street, and there are college kids who often party further down the street. Most other people keep to themselves, and so does my family.
All of my friends live either in or near my neighborhood. The only person that lives a long way away from me that is in my usual circle is Caitlin. She lives in a different neighborhood. My neighborhood is usually pretty quiet. Eddie 16, Orlando, FL
Carrie 17, Wheaton, IL
My neighborhood isn't that big, so there aren't a lot of kids, but the few kids there are keep to themselves.
Emelie 16, Kearney, NE They pretty much just keep to themselves! Sometimes I see a few kids just walking around though!
Everyone keeps to themselves, my street is pretty cool. We all have a giant barbecue every once in awhile.
Allison 17, Merrillville, IN
Kayla 12, Umatilla, FL
Chris 17, Orlando, FL
There aren't many kids in my neighborhood at all. Mostly older folks who keep to themselves.
Mostly grumpy old people. I have to ride my bike a few miles to friends’ houses.
I live on a lake and have a few friends my same age in the neighborhood. Everyone pretty much knows each other and we like to take walks around the lake, jump on the trampoline, go swimming, roller blade, and walk our dogs.
Jessica 16, Sorrento, FL
Cameron 13, Newburgh, IN
There's a huge range of people from little kids, to my age, recent grads, old people, etc.
There is a family that I babysit for and my little brother has a few friends that he plays with all the time. There are a few girls around my age but I don't know them very well.
Allison 17, Oregon, WI
Madison 13, Eustis, FL I live in an area with a lot of young Microsoft workers Ryan 17, Bellevue, WA
It's like high school. People mix as they please. Also, everyone pretty much knows everyone so it's not like you go out to meet people very often.
There are a couple of kids that live in my neighborhood that go to my school, but we don't really hang out with each other since we're all kind of different. Except for at neighborhood parties.
Mia 12, Apopka, FL We live in an old neighborhood in town and there are a few kids. It is mostly a quiet street to live on. Brian 14, Medford, OR

Day-To-Day
By Alison 17, Merrillville, IN
........................
What a regular day is like.
Every Wednesday morning I wake up at 5:30 a.m. so I can get ready for school. I run out the door at 6:20 with an apple or some other kind of fruit so I don't miss my bus.
By 6:45, I'm at school, so I go to my second home: the orchestra room. I stay in there and practice my cello until class starts. I LOVE cello! Once the school bell rings at 7:45 a.m., I dedicate the next seven hours to learning and studying orchestra, pre-calculus, AP biology, physics, and psychology. After school I usually spend half an hour at student government having fun organizing school activities and hanging out with my friends. Then I practically run to the other side of the school for an hour of academic decathlon practice. I love going to decathlon practice. We study something new at every practice and the coaches provide us with yummy snacks!
I finally get home at around 4:45 and I eat a snack. I usually take my dog, Peewee, on a walk. I love my little Peewee (even if he isn’t that little anymore). By the time I get back, I have to force myself to acknowledge the inevitable: I have to start my homework. After working on pre-cal or AP bio for nearly two hours, my mom tells me to get my butt to the kitchen table to eat dinner. I love it when my mom makes grilled chicken and mixed veggies for dinner.
After dinner I finish my seemingly unending homework. By the time I finish, it’s my favorite part of the day. I get to lie down in bed and read peacefully until my eyes can’t stand to stay open anymore (usually after only half an hour).

1-2-3-4-5-6 By Margo 17, Mount Dora, FL
to rise and Cheese Puffs and Twinkies seem to fall from the sky. Starvation, the most extreme form of malnutrition, isn’t something that’s apparent in our daily lives. The facts is, 6 million children die of hunger related issues every year, according to the World Health Organization. “I don’t see any reason why children have to be hungry. There are so many other issues in the world, but I think this is one we can tackle” said Nu Skin Enterprises Founding Partner, Sandie Tillotson.
"If you can spoon feed a small child a bowl of Vitameal, you are really impacted by the difference this is making. . . . Then you talk to the mother or the caretakers, and they tell you, 'Without this food, we don't know what we would do.' It's really touching,” Tillotson said.
Tillotson is not just talking the talk. She walks it as well. Nu Skin Enterprises, a $1.5 billion personal care company, initiated a program called Nourish The Children in 2002 to help address this staggering problem. So far, the Nourish The Children program has provided over 200 million meals to hungry children and disaster victims worldwide.
The success of Nourish The Children is two-fold. First there is the actual food. Nu Skin, along with leading scientists on malnutrition, formulated a product that will not only provide adequate caloric intake, it also contains 25 essential nutrients that a child needs on a daily basis. The second key to their success is in the distribution of the actual food product.
14 | TheBunkRoom.com | November 2011
Vitameal is manufactured in plants in Malawi, South Africa, China and the United States. Not only are these facilities stimulating the local
Tillotson travelled to Malawi, Africa recently with her 14-year-old daughter Sophia and again came away energized with passion for Nu Skin’s mission to be a “Force For Good” in the world. Nourish The Children has provided over 125 million meals to Malawi, Africa alone, a country where 5 million of its 13 million people have required emergency food aid.
Every six seconds, a child dies of hunger somewhere on our planet. That seems hard to believe for anyone living in the US, where obesity rates continue
economies by providing needed manufacturing jobs, but the nearly 800,000 distributors of Nu Skin products, in 52 countries, are also able to share the passion of stomping out world hunger as well. Suddenly the mission of being a “Force For Good” is multiplied. Distributors place orders for Vitameal donations worldwide. These donations are shipped to pockets of need all over the world. “It’s a way that our company can do business and help people socially and economically at the same time.” Tillotson said.
Tillotson knows how important it is to keep the distributors excited and enthusiastic about spreading the word about Nourish The Children, so she helps out in her own way by going to speaking events around the globe. “Personally, I can only donate so much, but if I can encourage our network of distributors around the world, in 52 countries, to do just a little bit, then the magic happens.”
Every 6 seconds a child dies from hunger “I don’t see any reason why children have to be hungry. There are so many other issues in this world, but I think this is one we can tackle.”
Sandie Tillotson, Founding Partner of Nu Skin Enterprises, the parent company of the Nourish The Children initiative that has provided over 200 million meals to starving children worldwide since 2002.

Hunger is the world's No. 1 health risk. One in seven people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight. Every year 6 million children die of hunger. One out of four children in developing countries are underweight. There are more hungry people in the world than the combined populations of USA, Canada and the European Union. *According to the World Food Programme of the United Nations.
Editor’s Note: The Bunk Room and all our publishing partners throughout the US, proudly participate in the Nourish The Children program. Each month every publisher of The Bunk Room, and participating advertisers donate meals to hungry children worldwide. Learn more at www.thebunkroom.com

By Margo 17, Mount Dora, FL When I first realized that I would have the lead in my ballet performance, I was totally excited. Finally, my hard work was paying off. Then, as quickly as that excitement came, it was dashed when I realized my final concert with the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra was that same day. I would have to miss out on my orchestra concert but I made up my mind that even though I couldn't perform, I would still go to the rehearsals. I figured I could learn more, have more fun and still be part of it all.
And learn I did! More than I ever imagined! I decided to chronicle a rehearsal minute to minute. It’s amazing what you learn simply by observing. Along with the amazing music I’ve learned to play, the amazing friends I’ve made and the incredible fun I’ve had with the orchestra, my experience with FSYO magnified by just watching. Enjoy my Snapshot...
Snapshot Youth Orchestra With sweeping bows, fingers flying, arms flailing and hearts pumping, members of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra rehearse the challenging repertoire that Maestro Andrew Lane has put in front of them. With the big movement in his arms and baton, the orchestra starts, stops and adjusts on their way to an exuberant sound for the Finale Concert of their 54th season. Welcome To Rehearsal. 2:00 - Concertmaster stands to tune. Starts with last movement of Shostakovich. Room fills with extreme sounds of drums, horns and strings. Clarinet players’ necks are bulging from lack of air. Mr. Lane continuously stomps his foot in place of the downbeat.... showing players when to rest. 2:04 - “The trickiest part of the piece, besides the technical aspects, is the acceleration.” Mr. Lane says. Apparently, speed needs to stay fast and not to slow down. He has horns play... Mr. Lane stops them after a somewhat “scratchy” note was played in the trumpet section. 2nd and 3rd chair trumpet players, Tyler and Seth, exchange glances, showing they noticed the noise as well. :) 2:07 - Strings are slowing down, “that’s where we need to move forward!!” Mr. Lane exclaims. He then spends time with the 1st violins and explains “Articulation is key.” 2:15 - Andrew, a 1st violinist comes in for rehearsal just in time for the violin sectional. 2:23 - Speed is really an issue with this piece. Mr. Lane keeps on bumping it up, so there is no chance the players will slow down.

2:24 - Stops violins “You have to be sure! Don’t fake it!” OPPOSITE DAY: Mr. Lane tells horns to not speed up! 2:26 - Percussionists quickly get up. Griffin starts playing very loudly on the xylophones while Barbara crashes the cymbals. “Rebecca will tell you if it’s loud enough,” Mr. Lane laughs, referring to a violinist in the back. Usually, that’s my job since my chair is right in front of the percussion section! 2:30 - Griffin, one of the percussionists, goes to the piano. Whaaat?! I didn’t know there was a piano part in Shostakovich! 2:34 - Mr. Lane takes a break, and explains how important this song was to Shostakovich and how the players need to play it with the same emotion as he did when he was writing the piece. “He wrote this piece to save his life,” he explains over and over. 2:45 - Now we’re pushing ahead! And, yes, Griffin is playing the piano. Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t realize that in our other rehearsals.... 2:53 - Taking a three minute break then going to rehearse the entire song all over. During that break, Mr. Lane plays the recording he made of the last run through that the orchestra played. He emphasizes what needs to be worked on. He lifts his baton, and the orchestra starts from the top. 3:00 - They are playing so, so fast. Relieved I’m not playing!
3:05 - Now Mr. Lane is frustrated. “This would be a disaster if this was the performance!” Tsk tsk.... people need to play out. 3:11- Mr. Lane plays back the most recent recording of the orchestra in the practice room. Tweaks 1st Chair Trumpeter Ben’s part. Sheepish grins erupt in the trumpet section.
the difficulty, everybody is sitting on the edge of their chair, alert. 4:15 - Barbara, a percussionist, asks questions about her part. She and Mr. Lane make changes to her part. “Yes, it’s awkward,” Mr. Lane explains “but it sounds so good.”

Green Thumb Gone Wild!
By Benjamin 13, Mount Dora, FL
The first thing you think of when you walk into Progressive Growers Inc. is -- WOW this is beautiful! The plants are all up on tables and in prefect rows which makes it look very majestic. Progressive Growers is an ornamental nursery run by Bryan Rice in Apopka, Florida. Apopka is considered the Indoor Foliage Capital of the World. More than likely, the plants you have in your house came from Apopka! When you see planters around the mall, that's where Progressive Growers provides the expertise. Most of Rice's customers are malls in the north that change their decorations for the seasons. "The pots you see in the malls get changed all the time," said Rice. For instance, he explained, in the summer they want flowers and in the fall they want plants with colored leaves and so on. Rice has been in the nursery business since he was a kid, working in his father's nurseries. Rice later built his own

nursery business as did his siblings and also his cousins. So now, that makes them competitors in this small Central Florida town. To get along, they try not to specialize in the same plant types, and they also agree not to talk business at family gatherings. For 17 years, Rice has operated Progressive Growers, improving and expanding the business along the way. There are a lot of things that go into running a successful nursery. "Everyone can grow plants, but not everyone can

sell them," said Rice. In the nursery business, for instance, Rice is now building a wood-fired, water-tubed water heater. This is an innovative system that will heat the roots of the plants during the winter.
For the past five years, Rice only heated the air of their
pipe into a water reservoir. From there the water goes two ways. One way goes back through the main drum and the other goes inside the nursery. Once in the nursery, the water travels through pipes on the plant tables. This heats the roots of the plants and the heat that comes off of the pipes will also heat the air a bit.

nursery just to keep the plants alive during the winter. Even in Florida, it gets cold enough to cause major damage to the plants. But now, the new boiler system will do even more. The new boiler system will heat the roots of the plants so that the plants will not only stay alive but also extend their growing season. "The plants will be tricked to thinking it's grow time," said Rice. "This way they will grow all year round." Here is how it works. First, there is a huge 10,000 gallon drum that heats the water that runs through pipes inside the drum. From there, the water travels through a
The main heating drum is heated with wood from local tree services. The tree services like this because they don't have to pay to drop off the wood at the dump and Rice gets free fuel. There is also a environmental upside to this arrangement; the trees aren't filling up a landfill.
Ahhh...Now the plants at the mall are much more interesting!
Rice plans on having the heating system done by October of this year and looks forward to an amazing growing season! So the next time you're at a mall, make sure you take some time to notice the plants!

An Empire State o By Erik 16, Mount Dora, FL This summer my family and I went to New York City. We saw many attractions but my favorite site was the Empire State Building.
At 102 stories, I couldn’t imagine what the view would look like on top. My family decided that my brother Benjamin and I would visit alone because my sisters had already gone the year before. I was so excited to be finally going to the Empire State Building because it is one of the most important buildings in not only New York history but world history. It had been the tallest building in the world from 1932 to 1971. As I entered the building, I was amazed at all of the detail that was put into the building. The inside was made primarily out of granite and marble and there were many carvings and designs on the walls and the floors. Everything in there was so detailed. The irony was that there were just everyday businesses on the ground floor of the building, like Walgreens. It seemed out of place for such an amazing historical building.
22 | TheBunkRoom.com | November 2011
As Benjamin and I made our way to the top of the building there were factoids all over the walls that we could read as you waited the hour or so to get through the line. Some interesting facts that I learned were that the building was named the Empire State Building because New York is known as the Empire State. In 1945 a US Army B-25 bomber crashed into the building due to the morning fog. In that incident, 14 people died. One person fell 75 stories in an elevator and survived. No one has ever survived an elevator fall that far and is still a Guinness Book of World Records.
When we reached the top I was so amazed by the view. I know that seems obvious, but really, it’s incredible. I could see the Statue of Liberty, New Jersey, the Freedom Tower and so much more. It was very exciting to see everything in New York from such a high view, as well as being where so many movies had been filmed. Some of the more notable ones are King Kong, Sleepless in Seattle and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
“When we reached the top I was so amazed by the view. I know that seems obvious, but really, it’s incredible.”

factoids • The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world from 1931 to 1972. First building with 100 floors. And it has its own zip code! • One of the Empire State Building’s original purposes was to be a docking station for blimps. (Zepplins) No airships ever docked there, however. • The Empire State Building is 1,250 ft without the spire and with the spire it is 1,454 ft. • The building was completed ahead of schedule at one year, 45 days. • Five people died in the building of the Empire State Building. • On Dec 2, 1979 a woman jumped from the 86th floor only to be blown back onto the 85th floor and left with a broken hip. • In 1947 a fence was put up around the observatory terrace after 5 people tried to jump in a 3 week time span. • There 17 million feet of telephone wire running though the building.

2 Trips To North Carolina
Action Packed Trip! By Christina 11, Orlando, FL
This June my mom, step-dad, sister, and I began the trip to North Carolina to see my granddad. We drove over 200 miles in one day. It was not fun. Thankfully we finally got to the place where we were staying and settled in.

The next day was our first hike. We hiked on the Triple Falls Trail. We also toured Carl Sandburg’s house. He was a famous poet. Tuesday was when we saw the Biltmore House. If you’ve never seen it, it’s SO cool! We toured the house, gardens, and the winery. Next we saw where my granddad used to live and some places he grow up around. Wednesday brought on another hike; this one was the Graveyard Fields. After the hiked, we went to Sliding Rock. I did it twice but I about froze my body because the water is ice cold! On Thursday we saw the sites in the town where my mom grew up and then my sister Victoria and I spent the night with our granddad. We had lots of fun! Our last day was Friday. We went tubing. It was a lot of fun, but we missed our exit and had to stay on the river for longer than we had expected. That night we had some good old country food. It was really good! We packed that night and got ready to go. The next day was more driving but I was glad to get home and see my animals. I had a lot of fun in North Carolina and I hope we can go back someday.
Oh no! No keys! By Kevin 12, Sorrento, FL
Every spring break my sister and I go to Lake Lure, NC to visit our grandparents at Stoney Creek Farm. Now we also visit my uncle at his coffee shop in nearby Chimney Rock. I was working at the coffee shop and after a long day my grandparents took me and my sister out to a restaurant. We enjoyed eating an amazing meal. With our bellies full we went back to the farm when we went to the door and later found out that we had no keys! We go around the house but all of the doors and windows are locked, all but one, the bathroom. Since I was the smallest in the family it was my job to get in the window hurry out the bathroom rush to the control panel and turn off the alarm as quick as my body would let me. I was glad I had my iPod for light in the pitch blackness of the house.

I climbed in the window and avoided my head going in the toilet then rushed to the control panel and go around the motion detectors and disarmed the system. Finally we were able to enjoy the rest of the night in peace. This is the first time breaking and entering was for a good cause. Another weird thing I had to do in North Carolina.

Life of an Artist! !"#$$%&'()*+%,(*#&-. /,(.0#!1%&'(./0+('20 By Hannah 11, Mount Dora, FL Heather +3+&(/!!#.%/&#""4 Renaux, of Mount Dora, FL is not just your everyday wife and mom. Renaux is an ./0+/&+(5%""(*206
artist and marketing illustrator. Being a marketing illustrator and being an artist are a little different from each other. "When I am being an artist then I am just creating paintings that I want to do without anyone's restrictions. When I am illustrating something I am just conveying an idea with a picture for commercial use," Renaux explained.
Most recently Renaux has been illustrating children's books such as Play Me a Song, World written by Jenn Mueller. "It is all about the music of daily life," Renaux said. She has also been at work illustrating, A Recipe for a Child's Success by Jason Beals. This is a book simplifying manners and virtues. Lastly, she is working on The Secret Queen, by Mark Miller. This is the sequel to The Lost Queen and both are illustrated with pen and ink drawings. That book was printed earlier this year. Each of these books is unique and different showing the wide range of Renaux’ talents as an artist. There are ups and downs to being an artist and a one of the ups are that combining the commercial side and the fine arts side allows her to combine her creative mind with her business mind. Another benefits is that it allows her to play a lot because, "You're making worlds that you dream up for others to see."
A third advantage is that she is able
to work at home and be with her family. For Renaux, being a wife and mother come before her art. She loves having her studio nice and organized such as keeping her paints color coordinated. Renaux says that one of the challenges of being an artist is that the voices in your head never stop giving you new ideas so she is almost always at work. Another weird thing I had to do in North Carolina.

The Tear Down
Habilis Boy
Habilis means “handyman” and dates back to the classification of early man, known as Homo habilis. That’s when man started using tools and becoming pretty handy around the house. We have our own resident Habilis man, in boy size: Benjamin.
By Benjamin 13, Mount Dora, FL Excerpt from Habilis Boy Blog. Restoring a ’77 VW Beetle. Day 10 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Today my sister and I went to a used tire shop to get some tires for my bug. The first place we went to didn’t have the right tires but they recommended another place that has the tires. I was looking for some taller tires because the bug is going to be lifted. I ended up paying $40 per tire. At first, I only bought two tires because I couldn't get the other two off. The bolts we so rusted on that my impact wrench could not take them off. The first two rims that I brought to the tire shop worked fine with the new tires. I later got my breaker bar and eventually got the last two tires off. When we got the wheels to the tire shop the guy pulled the old tires off of the rims to reveal a very rusty rim.....
