They say, “Every Englishman’s home is his Castle”. This connotes a certain kind of behaviour within this “Castle”. We have seen during the Pandemic, an increase in Domestic violence, an increase in misbehaviour. The idea of the home as the secure domain of the lineage is something which itself is being called into question by today’s experiences. Does the home have to be described as a container built for eternity, with all its self imposed anxieties of permanence? Or can it be considered a place of pause in a wayfarer life, or rest, a “Muqaam” as referred to in Classical North India music?
This is a documentation from a transcript of a conversation / lecture with Professor Neelkanth Chhaya, around ideas of Home and Domesticity. Curated by the Avani Insitutute of Design, moderated by Dr. Soumini Raja.
