FOREWORD
Writing sometimes feels lonely. When we sit at the desk, a blank sheet can get illed up with anxiousness and doubt. Will other people accept what I've written? This scary feeling of separateness is one reason so many people, kids and adults, say that they don't like writing, or worse, that their writing isn't good. During our poetry residencies at Seven Oaks this year, writing felt restored to its right place as something more joyful and communal, a very human activity at which everyone can play. With Cabin teaching-writer Cassie Angley and me, 4th and 5th grade students read model poems to igure out how writers build poetry that feels adventuresome and alive. Then, students took up poetic tools— form, image, igurative language—and set off to make their own new work. At the end of each writing session we came back together to share irst drafts and learn about revision. At Seven Oaks this year, I had the honor of experiencing reading and writing as a practice of creating community. This book represents just a sample of the wildly imaginative, startlingly true work that was written by the Seven Oaks community of writers. It’s good. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Cabin’s Writers in the Schools (WITS) programs are made possible through generous support from: Boise Cascade L.L.C., Bank of the Cascades, Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation, Idaho Commission on the Arts and TumbleWords, The Idaho Community Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The Whittenberger Foundation.
The foundation of our program is strong collaboration between Cabin teaching-writers and the teachers, students, and administrators who welcome us into in their schools. We are massively grateful to the visionary support of Lillian Folkner and the Seven Oaks PTO for making WITS possible at Seven Oaks, and to teachers Courtney McManus, Heather Stinemates, Jennifer deMarini, Noelle Friedrich, and Merrianne Cavazos for their willingness to collaborate throughout this residency. We learn so much from your gracious examples. We’re grateful also to the 4th and 5th grade students who have taught us a lot about writing and about being super-perceptive, super-alive. Thank you, thank you.

BOISE PHILHARMONIC Keara Thomas
The Boise Philharmonic felt like a war at the base of my seat. I felt the pounding in my body. It sounded like my dad hunting, aiming for the deer. It sounded like a sled hitting a rock. It sounded like my mother wearing high heels around the house. If I could taste it, it would taste like strawberries fresh from my back yard. It made me go through all my memories of life and the pounding music of dancing on the stage in front of people. I would go back in time to feel these all over again.
It felt like a war With lots of loud gunshots It made memories reappear

The lilies came at me, then they carried me away, then I was gone.

THE HANGING TREE Derek Mott
I see a tree, a very white tree. It looks like a giant snowman with the colors green and white. It gives me fresh air and smells like tree sap. It tastes like wood chips that are sticky. It feels rough as if four-wheeling in a truck. Every branch hangs there with it everyday. As if it has plenty of friends. It hangs there every day, watching people go by and listening to the wonders of nature. It watches the sun go up and down, same with the moon. The tree always talks to the birds. No power on Earth can beat a tree.

THE NICE WOLF Anna Dykas
I’m at the beach. Just me, the only one. Then dogs come running out here. It’s Harry and Ruger. Wait, there’s more, B.J. 2 and my ish, Spot and Goldy. (I never knew ish could walk!) Now I’m not alone, I have my pets. WAIT, THEY ARE SPEAKING. They are saying leave, leave! So I did and they followed, but they were right, because something was coming. It was dangerous. What was it? A wolf, dinosaur, or maybe, wait! it’s a wolf. It’s chasing me. I RAN INTO MY HOUSE. IT FOLLOWED. I TRIED TO STOP HIM BUT I
98
COULDN’T. I FINALLY STOPPED MY HEART RACING, BUT I calmed down. I sat on the couch. Where is he? He could be anywhere. Where is he? I FOUND HIM WALKING OVER TO ME. I GIVE UP, I TOLD HIM, BUT HE CAME OVER AND lied with me and he just wanted to lay with me.

THE OLD OAK TREE Gage Jones
I wake up in a place. Not my home, but a tree. The tree wants a friend. Just an ordinary friend. The leaves, the branches, the tree. What’s different about this tree? He is an old oak tree. His leaves leave, making him mad. The oak gives us life. He needs a friend. A friend can be anyone, I said. He didn’t listen. He is cold and weak. He keeps getting older. He hears kids screaming and hollering. The sky is blue and grey. The joy it brings to him when kids climb him. But not any more. He is just an old oak tree. He is in pain. Hello. Who was that? the tree thinks. Who would like me? I’m an old oak tree. Suddenly he hears a child laughing. I see him smiling, because he is an old oak tree.

THE PEBBLE Madden McGuinn
I am a pebble, a puny pebble. Getting blown around in the wind. I transform into a mountain, larger than the largest mountain. I see everything. I see over the world. Banks being robbed, murders. How can I stop this? I turn back into a pebble, then into a river of hate. I dislike crime, so all criminals come here to drink. But when they do I take them underwater. Wait. I am not this. I don’t like myself anymore. I turn into air, pure air. I die. I am no more. That is what I want. But I don’t die. I dance in the wind. I am good now. I throw lightning bolts down at criminals. I am rolling next to a black and blue fence. I freeze and I come out instantly. I am immortal. 100,000 years later I am still here. I sleep under a dead willow tree. I don’t like being a god. It is boring. I throw a lightning bolt at me and die. Only I can kill myself. I am happy now. I am dead, inally dead. Thank goodness.

THE WORLD Lauren Smith
I swim out two hours and jump and dive up and down. I swim out even farther and then a horse came out of nowhere and almost hit me. I look back. Shark, shark! I ly like an eagle to the stars. I see creatures even with wings. Dragons the color of black. Pegasus and unicorns. Then I fall back to Earth. No, no, no, don’t go. Hit the water like a bullet. Then I ly, ly, ly back up. The star where the creature is. I look up. I see one. It came to me. I never want to leave this place. No

THE STORY OF MY FRIEND Madison Meier
The person is my friend and also is a monkey. This friend of mine is brown and has a tail. At the zoo we say a super monkey.
What I want is a new lap top. Please let me stay up until ten. Oak trees smell like nothing but feel like wood and leaves.
I still do not know who stole my soap and bread. Evan, did you steal my soap and bread?
I need that color pink! I love December but not June. The dog is smelly so we don’t want to hug it!

THE UNFORGETTABLE WAR OF WEIRDNESS Ben Williams
In the peaceful land of the Marshmallows, the Gummy Bears declared a revolutionary war on the Marshmallows to be free. If they got caught, they would be thrown into the duckling and be engulfed. The Marshmallows got counteroffensive, but before that they had a nice lasagna. They got more condensed. They were so distracted by the lasagna that the Gummy Bears stole their cattle and livestock. This was a lethal attack because the Marshmallows didn’t have anything to eat. They couldn’t hunt because they are very condensed. The Gummy Bears developed quick. The next day the Gummy Bear hoodlums got crazy as the brethren stampeded Marshmallow City and won their freedom. Then a huge T-Rex ate them all. The T-Rex shrunk as a volcano rose up and exploded like a pimple getting popped. All of a sudden a meteorite with an atom bomb exploded onto the Earth and created the Atlantic Ocean.
Try forgetting this!
BOOM!

Fascinating Marbles
I build marble runs. Marbles rolling and dropping Sometimes falling, but not from very high.
Marble Roller Coasters
I build marble roller coasters. Marbles plunging off a steep drop Sometimes jumping off a ramp as a stunt.

THE WIND AND HIS TREE Brooke Patterson
The wind, a cold thing, always talking. The wind doesn’t blow all the time. It probably gets tired of talking ALL the time. When it has time and every ireplace is on it might say, I have a story to tell. But the only one who really take time to hear this is a tree. The tree might say, Do tell this story of yours. The wind says, You don’t know it yet but one day I will freeze one of your fallen leaves. Oh, well, do tell why? I will tell you my story. My story begins with the moon. The one moon that therefore is my best friend. I, the wind, will freeze you and your belongings. Oh wind, why would you do such a thing? I want to freeze time. I will spend time looking down at all the children coming out to play. I will become a low breeze. Then I will grow apples, said the tree. After all, I just sit here and watch you, the wind, go by. The moon, the wind says. My best friend! I will freeze you and your belongings. The moon told the wind. Oh, why is that? You are my friend, right? The moon said, No, not now, not ever! The moon did what he said. He froze the wind and said, Goodbye, friend.

TO A YOUNG POET ADVICE Gage Rudolph
My advice to you for writing a poem is, Do what ever you want to. Try to make a mini story. Use some metaphors, people, objects, and other things to describe your poem. That is all I can advise you on for poems.

YOUR VOICE Aris Neumann
Your voice sounds like Superman’s toe scraping the Empire State Building, Like Iron Man’s suit falling apart, Like nails to a chalkboard, Like a kitten’s claws scraping carpet, Bullet shells lying back on the wall, The tiles being scraped by a metal chair, Like hammering a bent nail, Like a tire exploding, A tree falling in the night.

CHEETAHS Jason Snyder
I am running from cheetahs. I get in my house. They’re clawing on the door. I am trying to get them away. I inally fall asleep. I wake up. They are gone but I notice I am in a different house. I am over ire. I try to run. There is a door but it is locked. I kick down the door but there is a talking cheetah. It is their chief! They notice I am there. I run but they are too fast. I dream up a magic bow. I shoot them down. There is the chief left. He knocks my bow out of my hands. I run him into the ire. Then lots of them leave and go to the jungle to their cheetah ways. I need to destroy their world. I’m ighting them. I am walking. The king’s back! Why are there two? I was ighting two, got one down. I was knocked back. I’d leap to the last one. They’re gone. I am a hero. The cheetah world is gone. Explosion! I go back to my home but an alien cheetah goes to knock me down. I run in the alien space ship. I break free then I get out. I go back to Earth. I keep on traveling to ice. I slip and fall. I hit ice loor. I die. My last word is, Earthquake.

DAY AT THE BEACH Bret Housel
I took a walk on the beach in Japan. There is a private jet. It’s for me. It smells like iron, hot iron. It feels hard and burns like the summer sun. I walk to the ocean tide. The beach, it smells like sunscreen and salt water. The tide in the background a small wave, getting bigger and bigger. I’m excited waiting for the wave to hit me. Then, I realize it’s not just a wave. It’s the mother wave I stand there shocked. I then run for the jet but as I run it gets farther and farther. The tide sinks back toward the wave. Then I run for the bridge. There’s no time. I jump, waiting for the plummet. I’m not hitting the ground. Then the wave hits
A giant panda rose out of the sand and with his laming sword cut the wave in half. The wave was defeated, then he spoke. The gods have sent me here to save you.

DREAMING OF THE STARS Megan Reeves
I walk along the beach thinking the world has no peace, no happiness at all. I hear the roar of the ocean, the crash of the waves, the seagulls’ cries. Then I feel the sand, the sky, the stars wrap around me, hearing the sounds. The sand tossing me over until I open my eyes again. I see light and dark and colors wrapped into a ball. The ball drags me until I touch it. I close my eyes again, wondering. Then I fall back to the ocean knowing I had been to the place where peace was kept; wrapped in the stars. The waves rock me until I sleep, dreaming of the stars.

I’M NOT TELLING YOU WHAT THIS IS ABOUT Alli Rapp-Koslosky
Nature sounds like a waterfall pounding on rocks, leaves brushing against the ground, wind howling like a wolf, glass breaking, animals growling like lions, pebbles falling off a cliff, a cat scratching your arm, water swirling like icicles, footsteps as loud as a dinosaur, lowers as small as a bug, nails scratching a chalkboard, splashing like waves against a beach, a mouse walking across the loor. Nature is a mystery.

THE LONG RIDE TO NOWHERE Sam Barbey
The shutters of the old house making cracking sounds as I enter The pillows are scattered all over the place! What? I hear horsemen run through the plains! I run to the bay that is right by it. I see a ball come to me. Then faster and faster it comes the more I slow down. Then it reaches me but I dodge it and run to the mountain peaks and I don’t stop. The mountains are no longer visible. Everything is gone! The world is white as fresh snow. I feel a weird scene, satin, then I wake up and see my Mom saying, Good morning. My room is rearranged then I ask myself Is this real? Was I dreaming for ten years? Is this the correct universe?

BAD DREAM Owen Sepulveda
I’m walking in Hawaii. The big palm trees growing over my head. The sand is pulling me down. It’s getting to my head. Now I’m in the sand. Then I hear a voice. Swim, swim, swim! Then I’m out, but I see snow and a snowman talking to another snowman. Then they start to follow me. I start running. But they start to catch up. I get scared. There are more of them. I trip, but it’s weird, like someone tripped me. Then it’s warm. I’m in the warm water. My mom is sitting in a chair. When I come out she says there is a big wave. It hits me. I get pushed to the dry sand. She asks me what I was doing. I say having a bad dream.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY Emma Russell
They’re eating their hair while it’s blowing in the air. Hopefully their dresses don’t tear. Their mouths are as big as a giant but they are not so silent. Her necklace could chop her neck off while she hops too high. She might kill herself. The bill of their noses are red. Before they go to bed the tent is yellow and white and they’re bending their arms. They all have matching tattoos. I hope they don’t get boo boos. Her hand is ombre with their bands suffocating their wrists. One has a large ist. Their eyes are squinted while they say their goodbyes. GOOD BYE!

COLD Sarah Clevenger
The cold was an awful place!
It was white, cold, freezing.
The snow was coming alive and raining terror on all who came out.
Jackets would dieÂ… of hypothermia.
The weather was harsh.
You felt like you were punched in the stomach by the air!
Your happiness was stolen by temperature.
Even with six sweaters.
Seven coats.
Twelve pairs of socks.
You would still freeze.

QUIET AS A MOUNTAIN Carter Castleberry
As I slowly close my eyes in bed, I slowly leave my home and turn into a great big mountain. as peaceful as if everyone on Earth was gone or disappeared. The mist hits my face as the trees sway side to side. I see people climb me all the way to my head. And then slide all the way down as the mist slowly rises. I ind myself back in bed, not a mountain in the forest.

WAVES AND EMOTIONS Dallyn L. Walton
I used to be a normal girl in a normal world. But now I’m an ocean illed with life and water. I ride to shore frightened but excited. What’s next to come? I ride to shore over and over again. My life is illed with waves of emotions leaving me. All I want is one thing Calm, no waves up or down. Is that so hard to ask?
I feel the sting of the sting ray. The poke of the sword ish. The splash of the dolphin. The sounds of the ocean aren’t calm aren’t joyful it’s just waves of emotions and feelings. The ride to shore with feelings. Come back with emotions.

MYSTERIOUS WEATHER Addie Clark
I saw a snowball. I picked it up, the color changed to red, green, pink, blue, yellow, all the colors you could imagine. The moment was so magical I felt like I was lying with birds, then suddenly it melted back to its original colorÂ… white. I looked around and asked myself, How does a snowball show up in the middle of summer? There was no snow at all and I dropped the snowball and when it touched the ground it froze back into a snowball and rolled away. I never found it again.

THE BLUR Lauren Sonne
I ran to the shore. The sun shines bright in my face. Suddenly everything closes up. The water is getting closer. So is the sun. Things are spinning faster and faster, so fast everything stops. I don’t see or hear the ocean. I can’t feel the warmth on my back. I see an object but it’s too blurry. I can not tell what it is. I turn around. It is right there when I turn around. I turn to my side. There it is again. I turn to my other side. It is there once again. It seems it is going everywhere I go or look. It says something but it is so far away all I hear is a mumble. Then everything turns blank. All I know is I’m lying down on the ground. It is very cold. I don’t see anything, but I hear that same exact mumble. I barely open my eyes and there he is. The same guy following me around on the beach. I don’t

know what he wants? He comes closer! He holds out his hand, pulls me up and Poof. He’s gone and I’m in my bed. No more water from the ocean. No more warm sun on my back. I’m just lying in my bed and really I don’t know how I got there and who that man was. I want to go back so I know who he was. I wanna know what he said. I wanna know why I was at the beach and then all of a sudden in the cold. But there are really no answers.

ONLY A DREAM Eddy Moorman
I was running in the future, when the monster mice roamed. Then I hid inside an alleyway where the ire burned above. But then, I see, in the corner of my eye, a sword and shield, my oh my! I fought and slashed and slashed and fought, but every time I slashed, more mice came out of the sword! So I broke the sword and
Ah! I said, sweating in
my bed. Oh, it was only a dream.

THE DIFFERENCE Josephine Beasley
I’m strong and brave. The icy blue eyes of the girls sparkled in the distance.
The sunset was magical with the clouds swaying past each other.
The deer was white as snow, and looked like a snow lake in the fog.
But, the differences between the friends got in the way.
Wait, when did you get here and when?

CHANGING Chloe Hopkins
The dog’s eyes are droopy and his ears are down
Please don’t cry, I’m still here but I’m still purple and I’ll never be blue
You now are my grandfather and you were my dog
Then you turn red with power and burn everything in sight
I am powerful but rude only to you
You are rude and mean You know my weakness and scream
I’m here for you Please don’t go, I need you People tell lies about me, I need you You’re my only friend

CRYSTALLINE WATERS Erik Garringer
Liquid green, unlike nothing you’ve ever seen. Dancing on the water like a disc shaped stone, skipping across the water, lung from well skilled hands. You’re not alone. You have your well spoken friend on your side. There’s no need to ight the tide. You’re in peaceful waters. It feels like you’re on a sacred water dish, it for the likes of the knights of the round table. No rapids No waves No tides Just the light of the warm summer breeze makes the crystalline water shimmer like Snow White’s mirror. Shimmer the water. Glisten like falling glass. Glisten like breaking diamonds. A kayak on the waters.
Waters, waters. Crystalline waters.

NO NAME Maddie Gorman
Once I lived happy now I live in a sea of misery.
All I feel is regret, and how one little mistake changed my life forever.
The only thing I hear is sorrow coming from deep inside of me,
asking me to cry but I don’t.
I can’t be happy without her.
