PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME
Dear Reader, Welcome back to Cambridge and to the Union for another term of speaking, watching and debating. Lent term can often feel like the slowest and longest term but we are here to fill your time with a jam-packed schedule of events. We hope to see you interrupting Jacob Rees-Mogg or Reverend Richard Coles with points of information in debates, asking James Blunt or Davina McCall about life in the public eye, and dancing your socks off at our famous Spring Ball. Union membership is more relevant now than ever before. Recent committees have upped their game to provide you with world-class speakers and thought-provoking debates. They have made sure there is something for everyone. Lent is going to be no different, and as we look beyond into the future, we are confident that the Union’s next few terms will keep getting better and better. It’s not just our famous speakers and debates that should entice you to come along to the Union - far from it! We are committed to making the Union a centre of Cambridge’s buzz. With weekly mindfulness, yoga, Zumba, debating workshops with some of the UK’s best young debaters, puppy therapy, and panels for all, there is no shortage of things happening here on Bridge Street. Beyond our
beautiful building, you can enjoy members’ discounts throughout Cambridge, from old favourites Fudge Kitchen to buzzy burritomasters Nanna Mexico. More than everything, the Union is here to defend free speech. We continue to live in an age where views and opinions are stamped out, blinded and left in the gutter. At the Union, we want to hear your voice. Come along to our debates, speakers and panels, and share your opinion. It’s just as important as ours, Katie Price’s, and even James Blunt’s. We look forward to you joining the debate. Jonah Surkes, Clare College

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? (And why should I?)
Stewarding:
Emergency Debates:
Stewarding remains a fantastic way to become involved here. Almost all events need stewards and it is very useful in finding out more about the Union’s work. The perks remain as usual: a guaranteed seat (even in our most popular events), a free panini from the 1815 Bar and £5 bar tab. If this is something in which you would be interested then please do join the ‘Cambridge Union Society Stewards’ Facebook group and sign up on the spreadsheet for next term or e-mail Gabriel and Amy on HoEM@cus. org.
Emergency debates happen on Thursdays at 7PM in advance of our Main Debate for the week. They are on a motion of current interest and each week we need four speakers. A new benefit of speaking in these is that the best speaker, as judged by the Chair, each week will receive a voucher for a haircut at either The Cambridge Barber Company or Stilo Hair and Beauty. If you would like to speak in an Emergency Debate the motions will be announced by Easter 2018’s Committee in the ‘Emergency Debaters’ Facebook group each week.
Points of Information:
Floor Speeches:
During our Main Debates Points of Information can be made at each speaker’s discretion. All those who make a POI should state their name and college as soon as they have been passed a microphone. These names will then be on a list at the door of the drinks reception which you will be able to attend after the debate. There will be free wine and non-alcoholic drinks and the opportunity to speak to the experts from that debate.
During each Main Debate we will do several rounds of short Floor Speeches which is your chance to share your view on the motion. These are announced by the President in proposition, opposition and abstention. This term there will be prizes for those judged to be the best of the term by the President and Vice President. 1st Prize is a free bike from The Bikeman on Market Square, 2nd Prize is a place in a speaker dinner of your choice next term and 3rd is a £20 bar tab at the 1815 Bar. Again, please remember to state your name and college as soon as you get the microphone.
These incentives were secured in last term’s Debates Committee by Sheriar Khan (Debates Deputy, Michaelmas 2017) and Rhianna Voice (Executive Officer) and we hope that this initiative will continue in future terms. Another new feature of our Main Debate nights is the inclusion of a student speaker who is either a student expert in the field or a renowned debater at the Union.

COMPETITIVE DEBATING Join Competitive Debating at Cambridge
Have you been interested in debating but never joined? Did you debate while at school and are keen to continue? Regardless of your level of experience, Cambridge Debating would be happy to have you. Even if you have never debated before, the various debate training sessions will equip you with all the skills you’ll need for excelling at a real tournament. It is possible to go far with merely an enjoyment of on-the-spot thinking and with a grasp of the format, which we discuss in workshops. Aside from this, we will be running workshops catering to all levels of experience. These workshop series will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, with socials in the bar afterwards. Similarly, Women’s Debate Workshops will be held every other week starting on Monday, January 29th.
What You’ll Get
There are plenty of benefits to debating for the Cambridge Union. At the recent European Universities Debating Championships ten of our speakers ranked within the top 50 debaters in Europe with one of our speakers being the joint best speaker in Europe and two of our judges reached the knockout rounds. We regularly send debate teams of many experience levels all around the world; India, Latvia, Hong Kong, Sweden, Ireland, France and more! Many of our debaters find they gain lifelong skills and friendships through the network of friendly and intellectually curious people who regularly meet at competitions at many UK universities. At the Union we deeply care about ensuring that as many people as possible are able to get involved in debating regardless of their previous experience
Giving Back
This term we will be hosting the Cambridge Schools Debating Competition. It is our largest charitable debating competition and we are eager to get as many people as possible involved. If you are passionate about debating and interested in volunteering or would like to know more about the competition, please email Alasdair and Imran (debating@cus.org).

Whether you’re a fresher or a Union member entering their final year at Cambridge, we hope that you will give debating a try and look forward to seeing you at one of our workshops!

As part of our constant objective to give you better value for your membership, we are happy to announce that we will be reviewing and improving the library over the next few terms to make it a better resource for you. Potential objectives include: •
•
Full stock check and update of the Union’s catalogue system, allowing access to our broad range of political, historical, and fictional reading. Dedicated times when the Librarian will be on duty to assist members.
•
Investigating reconfiguration into a more work friendly environment.
•
Ensuring preservation and if necessary restoration of our older books collection.
•
Ensuring that the library becomes a useful space for all its members.
If you have any ideas for how you think we can revamp the Library, if you want to join our library team and put ideas into action, or if you just want to learn more about the Union library, please contact Sam at librarian@cus.org.
UNION + Union+ is the new initiative we introduced in Michaelmas to make events more open and accessible to the wider student body. This has been an attempt to feature more diverse events and go beyond the debates and speaker events to feature panels, workshops, entertainment and much more. In the following pages, you will be able to find a wide range of events that we hope appeals to every taste. Moreover, many
64
of them will allow you to get involved in the discussions, speaking with other members of the university and experts passionate about these issues. Union+ events will be identifiable both in term cards and in social media by being coded with different colours and an identifiable symbol. We look forward to having you join our events and joining the conversation!
What science can do At AstraZeneca, we believe in the power of what science can do to transform serious diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, COPD and asthma. We also know that breakthrough science doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens through partnership.
We created the Open Innovation Platform to help us establish partnerships that will lead to the discovery and development of new medicines. These programmes are encouraging like-minded scientists from industry and academia to share their ideas and know-how to bring life-changing medicines to patients – together.
These collaborations could be at any stage of drug discovery – from the early idea through to early clinical development. To find out how to submit a proposal on your idea, visit openinnovation.astrazeneca. com
Biologics in the treatment of asthma Eosinophils are known to infiltrate the airways of some asthma patients and cause airway inflammation. AstraZeneca is developing a biologic that binds to the surface of osinophils
and recruits natural killer cells to remove them from circulation.

PRESIDENTS’ THANKS The Union is nothing without the enormously hard work of its committee and staff, and I am indebted to each and every one of you. Planning a strong Lent term is hard. Michaelmas flies by and is packed with work, and then when we can all breathe a sigh of relief on the way to Christmas, offices are closed and family time is more important. So to all the hard workers who have created a term card which, against all the odds, is wonderful - thank you. Sabine, Joe, Louise, Nathan, Katherine, Dave and Paddy - thank you for supporting us every step of the way with bookings, administration, technological wizardry, security, numbers and all inbetween. I’ll miss you! Sam, Bart, Andy, Leo and everyone who works behind the bar at 1815 - thank you for being a constant source of smiles and spirits. If I forget you, I know it’ll be your fault. Chris, Nigel, Nigel, Nick, Daniel, David, Araba, Rachel and David - your dedication and care for this building is unceasing, and it has been a pleasure to work alongside you. Please stay in touch! Bill - my advisor, security manager, expert and now friend… thank you for every meeting and recommendation you have given me. From planning Bernie Sanders’ security to meeting

Your ideas and calming techniques in times of intense stress have been invaluable. I wouldn’t be writing this without you. To my incredible team: Tom - thank you for being the best Vice-President, nagger, optimist and friend throughout this entire process. I will still be unable to understand quite how you manage to do all you do, and do it so well, but I am happy to just remain in admiration of you. Never stop asking how much something costs - it’ll get you far.
