President’s Welcome Welcome back to the Cambridge Union for Easter Term! Now, most of you are thinking more than anything about exams, but we have aimed to make the Union a great place to come when you need a few hours away from that mountain of textbooks and the library. Difficult issues surrounding racism and the legal status of prostitution will be debated; the effects of social media, Higher Education policy and the virtue of the Liberal Democrat Party will all be argued over by experienced and interesting people. We have aimed to set up some debates that have not been discussed in our chamber for a while and look forward to hearing students voices on these motions. However busy you are, it would be a shame to miss national treasure Sir Michael Parkinson, revered newsreader Sir Trevor Mcdonald, best-selling novelist Andy McNab, the President of Albania and former England International footballer John Barnes among others. We have some brilliant Ents, including fire and video games in Beltane and the Japanese festival, and the 2012 Union Garden Party when the stress is over and relaxation begins. As term starts, we will not stop working to bring highprofile speakers to the Union that will drag you away from revision.

Michael Black President, Easter 2012

Competitive Debating The Cambridge Union is one of the world’s most successful debating societies, offering a chance to improve your public speaking skills, learn how to engage with an audience, and represent Cambridge at national and international competitions. No previous experience is necessary, so if you’re interested, why not get involved? Our debaters take part in both domestic and international competitions, which are great fun and an excellent opportunity to improve your debating and visit other parts of the country and the world. If you think you might enjoy debating, why not come along to a workshop at the start of term and see what you think? Only Cambridge Union members can take part as our debaters benefit not only from incredible opportunities but also expert coaching and heavily subsidised travel to domestic and international competitions. The Union also runs the world’s largest schools’ debating competition, and you can help to spread debating to young students across the country by judging or helping to organise it. The Cambridge Inter-Varsity is one of the largest and most prestigious debating competitions on the calendar, attracting teams from the world’s best universities, and there are opportunities for you to adjudicate. If you have any questions, please email the Debating Officers, Joel Fenster and Tahleel Lateef, on debating@cus.org, or check out the website: www.cus.org/members/debating.
