CAMBRIDGE UNION SOCIETY EASTER MMXIV

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME From Michael Dunn Goekjian

W

ELCOME back to Cambridge and to another term at the Union. Exam term is immensely stressful at the best of times, and we hope that this programme of events can provide something of a counterpoint to the ceaseless slog of revision. The Union is not just about politics, and this term we’ve tried to offer something for everyone – from film buffs to sports enthusiasts – in the hope that as many of you as possible will be able to enjoy your membership in this challenging period.

will also host two award-winning authors, David Nicholls, who wrote One Day and Starter for Ten, and the inimitable Douglas Hofstadter, whose magnum opus, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is a must-read. Finally, and on a disparate note, the legendary economics blogger and populariser of NGDP targeting Scott Sumner will visit us in June, as well as the brilliant designer Cath Kidston. This term, the Union’s forums will focus on very important issues: on April 30th, we will hold a Feminism Forum, while on June 18th we will be putting on a panel discussion in collaboration with The Autism Research Trust, featuring Professors Erno Rubik (of the eponymous Cube) and Simon BaronCohen. We are also hosting several events in collaboration with other Cambridge organisations: Africa Day, the Hip-Hop Debate, the Women’s Public Speaking Workshop, the TEDxOxbridge Conference, the EU Debate, as well as a club night hosted by Cambridge favourites TURF. Finally, we will celebrate the world’s most political song contest with a Eurovision Party, and the end of exams with our traditional Garden Party, which promises to be better than ever.

Our debates this term reflect the full range of members’ interests. We begin with a timely discussion of the global impact of the Catholic Church, followed by a debate on the priotisation of the traditional in cultural education. We then move to an exposition of the controversial effects of money in sport, arranged in collaboration with our title sponsors, Deloitte LLP, before a debate on Scottish Independence, our last before the referendum. Finally, my Presidential Debate will explore whether feminism would be better off without people like me. Ted Loveday and the Speakers Committee have arranged a fantastic programme of speaker events. From geopolitics we will welcome the Russian and Ukrainian Ambassadors, as well as Nobel Peace Prize Winner Marti Ahtisaari. From film and television we have two former Doctors (reflecting members’ undying enthusiasm for the show), controversial TV personality Katy Hopkins, as well as the legendary David Hasselhoff, who needs no introduction. We

With best wishes for the coming term,

Michael DG President, Easter 2014

THE

CAMBRIDGE UNION SOCIETY EASTER MMXIV

PRESIDENT’S THANKS

M

UCH of the legwork for this term was done in the Easter break by a group of dedicated volunteers known euphemistically as Vacation Committee. In reality, these lovely people gave up a week of their lives to slave away in an email sweatshop in the company of a committee of borderline lunatics. To all of you: Oliver, Oli, James, Amy, Carlo, Ruby, William, Patrick, Louise, Shounok, Ariel, Raphael, E-Y, Huey, Jasper, Katherine, Ryan, Andrew, Beth and Fred etc. – a colossal thank you.

the Officer responsible for the Union’s longterm development, Alex Porter’s good grace in helping with yet another Union term is to be marvelled at. At its core, The Union is the world’s greatest debating society, and representing it in that capacity has been one of the greatest honours of my time here. To Matt and Tom, thank you for running the show so effectively. To Matt in particular, thank you for all the time you have put into Cambridge Schools, easily the most important thing we do. Cambridge Debating is more than just an administrative feat - it is a testament to the talent, dedication and panache of our top debaters. So to Kitty, Ben, Ashish, Anser, JW, Freddy, Simpy etc. thank you and congratulations.

Thank you to the fantastic Easter team for planning this term so calmly and professionally: to Nick, who has been an extraordinarily organised and focused Exec and will doubtless make one of the best VicePresidents the Union has ever seen; Amy, who has put me to shame with her fundraising and gone well beyond the call of duty in the runup to her finals; Ted, who has done a fabulous job at what is plausibly the Union’s toughest role, never compromising his disarmingly sunny disposition; and Rachel, the best Social Events Officer we’ve ever had, and one of the most conscientious people I’ve ever had the privilege to meet.

Finally, the personal bit: Imogen, you’ve been a fabulous friend and a great example – I’m honoured and terrified in equal measure to call you my predecessor; Forzani, I’m not quite sure what you’ve been, but it’s been great regardless. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I ought to thank everyone else – all the people who’ve been so generous to me temporally, intellectually, materially and physically outside of 9A Bridge Street: Mummy and Daddy, Lily, Grandma and Grandpa, Lucas and Lucy, Alex S, Raymond etc. – thank you once again.

Behind the scenes, the Union is kept on course by an outstanding team of longerterm staff, led by the indefatigable Bill Bailey, to whom we all owe so much. Working with dozens of vacillating and confused students every year to run a multimillion-pound charitable organisation is a challenge of nearheroic proportions, but one to which our staff rise on a daily basis with characteristic good humour – thank you all. Likewise, as
