Lent Term 2012 | Cambridge Union

President’s Welcome Welcome back to Cambridge for another term, and it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Lent 2012 at the Union. We’ve done everything we can to produce a termcard we hope you will find stimulating, exciting, fun and varied – from economics and politics through science to culture and the arts we have tried to offer the broadest spectrum of events yet to ensure that there is something for everyone. We’ll be debating some classic issues such as the legalisation of euthanasia, the place of the judiciary in society, and the life of women in the workplace, as well as some of the world’s frontpage topics like the Arab Spring and the future for the British economy. Be sure to come along in Week 5 to see a cast of ex-Footlights, all now professional comedians, take each other on in a bid to make you laugh as the stresses of term all get a bit much. For our individual speakers expect a range of famous, inspirational and fascinating people – have your politics questions answered by David Miliband, quiz Professor Lord Robert Winston on life, the universe and everything, hear Stephen Sondheim’s thoughts on theatre, ask Jerry Springer about just where he finds the people who feature on his shows and get Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s perspective on the global economic climate. Beyond speakers and debates, our forums will tackle same-sex marriage, this summer’s London riots and the War on Terror 10 years on, and we even have a film premiere, Acts of Godfrey, followed by a Q&A with the star, Simon Callow. Social events this term will be exceptional as always: we’ve overhauled the pub quiz; yoga, cocktail workshops and Zumba will continue; and with a regular Friday night slot for anything from Chinese New Year to DENIM to karaoke, the Union is the perfect place to relax or to party. Our cocktail menu remains excellent and our prices are still brilliantly cheap, so make sure you make the most of it! We will also be hosting a Masquerade Ball, so get yourself a ticket and find a mask for an incredible evening of the best food, drink and ents imaginable. If you’re not yet a member, do make the most of our Open Period (details on page 6) and remember to join before the price increase on the 1st of February! All the very best for a fabulous Lent term and I hope to see you soon,

Katie Lam President, Lent 2012 3
