Welcome from the President Welcome to the Cambridge Union, and to everyone who has come up for the first time, welcome to Cambridge! Michaelmas 2013 at the Union is a term packed with fantastic events nearly every day, as well as influential and inspiring speakers from all walks of life. The highlights of our speaker line-up this term include pioneering astronaut Buzz Aldrin and prolific American civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson. We are also hosting three of Britain’s most famous comedians, Reginald D. Hunter, Tim Vine and Ben Miller. Prominent public intellectuals Professor Jim Al-Khalili and Professor A. C. Grayling will address our members on science and philosophy. Two of the most eminent legal figures in the United Kingdom, Lady Justice Arden and Baroness Hale of Richmond will talk about the challenges facing the law in the 21st century, and from the world of elite sport, we have Beth Tweddle and Sir Clive Woodward who will discuss their successes at the Olympics and the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Topical issues are at the heart of this term’s debates. The Minister of State for Immigration, Mark Harper, will speak on this summer’s controversial Home Office measures, while David Davis and Peter Tatchell are visiting to debate institutional invasion of our private lives. Our debate on revoking President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize comes as tensions mount over the United States’ approach to the conflict in Syria. We will also be addressing more philosophical issues in our debates on the rise of New Atheism as well as the ethical implications of pre-natal gene selection. This term’s Ents will be the best yet, and include a four-day Gaelic festival featuring fire-dancing and a ceilidh, as well as our annual Oktoberfest celebrating the finest Bavarian bier and bratwursts. We also offer a packed programme of weekly Ents with live music and fantastic cocktails in our buzzing student bar. We look forward to seeing you at the Union later this term.

Joanna Mobed President, Michaelmas MMXIII

Competitive Debating The Cambridge Union Society runs one of the most successful and inclusive competitive debating programmes in the world. As the reigning European Champions and having won the English National Championships twice in the last four years and produced two of the thirteen best speakers at the World Debating Championships, Cambridge has sustained an unprecedented level of success in debating. You need no previous experience to start improving your public speaking skills and all our opportunities are available to all Union members. Why not give it a go? Why should I get involved? Debating for The Cambridge Union Society equips participants with an incredible set of skills which are extremely useful in a variety of contexts beyond the traditional British Parliamentary format of debating we use. There are lots of ways to get involved and we run many different programmes, so you’re sure to find something that will suit your interests. Debating Workshops Every Wednesday, from 7.00-9.00pm, we run beginner workshops for those who have never debated before, and practice debates for those who wish to hone their skills. World-class debaters from the Universities’ debating circuit volunteer to be our mentors, and whether or not you wish to compete for Cambridge, you will be trained into a formidable public speaker and debater. Competitions and Tours Universities across the United Kingdom host debating competitions on a weekly basis. We do not simply send our best speakers, but select from a wide range of abilities in order to give as many members as possible the chance to debate. Last year, we sent over 60 speakers to competitions, and next year we hope to send even more. These competitions provide a brilliant opportunity to socialise with students whilst visiting other parts of the country. We cover the registration fees and part of your travel costs; you only need to show up, ready to debate! We also offer members the chance to debate around the globe. In the last three years we have funded trips to Beijing, New York, Istanbul, Florida, Belgrade, Manila, Botswana, and Kolkata. Access The Cambridge Union Society hosts debating workshops for schools across the United Kingdom. Teaching in these workshops is a fun, rewarding way to pass on the art of debating and develop



M MMXIII teaching skills. Cambridge debaters also serve as judges for Cambridge Schools, the largest debating competition in the world, which saw over 1,200 participants last year. We offer schoolchildren from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to learn more about Cambridge and University-level debating. In Michaelmas Term, we run workshops for Union members on how to judge debates. How do I get involved? On Friday 11 October, we will be holding our Debating Launch Event at 7.00pm! We’ll have our best debaters to answer your questions about debating, sign-up forms for you to fill in and lots of free pizza, so be sure to come along. You can also turn up to our regular sessions every Wednesday at 7.00pm - all Union members are welcome! If you cannot attend, please feel free to email us at debating@cus.org. We also encourage you to subscribe to our mailing list (soc-cus-debatingworkshops) or join our Facebook group (Cambridge Debating) for regular updates. th

Thursday Debate Format The format used at the Cambridge Union is loosely based on the British Parliamentary style. Each team, consisting of three or four speakers, argues either for or against a set motion and are called the proposition and opposition respectively. The first proposition speaker starts each debate, and proposition and opposition speakers alternate throughout. Each speaker has eight minutes in which to present their case. Members on the floor are invited to give short speeches of their own after each pair of main speakers, again in proposition or opposition, but also in abstention. Members may also interrupt the main speeches, although only at the discretion of the speaker, to ask a question or give a brief point of information. To do so, they should stand and announce “on that point” or “point of information”. At the end of the debate, the President will invite the speakers to leave and then direct members of the floor to vote. Members vote, as in Parliament, by walking through a particular door as they leave the chamber. Those voting in favour of the motion exit through the door marked “Ayes” and those against through the door marked “Noes”. Unlike Parliament, members can also abstain by leaving through a third door. The results of the vote are announced in the members’ bar around fifteen minutes after the end of the debate.

Vacation Committee The calibre of the term lies in the strength of the whole team behind it, especially the Vacation Committee, for whom a single page isn’t enough. Particular credit goes to Nick’s cabinet minister trivia, Hugh’s unparalleled debate invites, Kate’s patience working alongside an unruly team of undergraduates and Faiza’s sponsorship efforts, Wesley’s working from 8.30am until 1.00am on his second day on the job, with no breaks and James’ ability to fool us into thinking he’s Oli. Chloe and Eloise were fantastic as the Murray Eds duo. Annika, Brendan and Liheng were fantastic assets on the Speakers Committee, securing numerous individual and debate speakers between them. Ted always had the biggest smile on his face and Simrun’s obsession with astronauts kept us all entertained. The Vacation Committee meets during the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays to send out invitations, help with termcard preparation, and plan the coming term. It is an ideal opportunity for any Union member who has seen the events we hold and wants to get involved in organising them. In return for a week or two of their time, they receive free accommodation, breakfast and lunch, as well as the satisfaction of seeing the people whom they’ve invited come to the Union to speak. If this sounds like something you’d want to do in the coming Christmas holidays or you’d like more information, please send an email to executiveelect@cus.org.

President’s Thanks Alon, Jono, Michael, Oli – I couldn’t have wished for a better team of Michaelmas officers. Alon – meticulously organised and an Excel expert, thank you for arranging the website launch, debate logistics, a brilliant barbecue and everything inbetween. Jono – judging by last term’s Garden Party, your Ents will be the best yet, and thank you for keeping me fuelled with Jelly Babies and silly YouTube videos to ease the tensions of the termcard deadline. Michael – thank you for the depth of knowledge you contribute to your role, both as a competitive debater and an aspiring financier. No other Treasurer has attended a budget meeting with a backissue of the HBR for reference. Oli – thank you for working tirelessly, for your amazing propensity for picking up the phone to people, and for bringing your enduring wit and optimism to every job that comes your way. Amy and Ian – you’ve worked round the clock planning Freshers Week and are never short of creative ways to get people involved in the Cambridge Union. Craig – you’ve put together two beautiful documents on too little sleep! Alex P. – we have been involved in the Union together since the start, and I am really excited to continue working together this term. Ali and Will – your commitment spearheading the Union’s core facet, competitive debating, is greatly appreciated by all of us, and so is your dry humour. Staff – Bill, thank you for keeping us all in line and for providing me with your guidance and wise words. Please keep space for me in your outside office after this term ends. Thank you to Michelle for always being there with an encouraging smile, and to Joe and James for your creative cocktails. The Lent Team – Good luck – not that you’ll need it! Between Tim’s contribution to just about every event in the termcard (thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it!), Jiameng’s Bob Dylan impressions and ability to tolerate my cooking, Leo’s brilliant skills in the art of surprise and Daniel’s ability to turn his hand at everything from AV to Ents, there is no doubt that Lent 2014 will be a term to remember. Imogen – thank you for being the best friend and President-Elect imaginable. Thank you for tea and biscuits, constant TLC and the tenacity you bring to everything you do. I have absolutely no clue what I’d do without you. Alex Forzani – you’ve organised the largest sponsorship deal in the Union’s history, written this termcard, and kept my spirits up while planning the term, from start to finish. Thank you; Richard Ottoway was right.
