PRESIDEN T ’S
TO THE CAMBRIDGE UNION SOCIETY To those of you who are returning to Cambridge after a long summer spent on a beach, gradually watching your soul ebb away at a corporate desk job, or simply crying softly in your room for twelve weeks, welcome back. You look nice. Did you do something with your hair?
The Union has had some pretty major work done this summer: we’ve upgraded our camera equipment so that our videos no longer look like they were shot in the early 1980s, and all of our major events will be livestreamed to members at www.cus.org/CUSlive. You’ll even be able to read the derogatory Twitter comments as they come in along the side of the page. This is part of our effort to continue to attract the biggest and best speakers of any university society in the world.
If you’re a fresher, just now arriving in Cambridge bright-eyed and bushy-tailed – hello. I envy you. For one, I envy your youthful naïvety and enthusiasm about the years ahead of you. However, I also envy you because you have the opportunity to join the Cambridge Union Society: it’s a choice you only get to make once, and I wish I had the chance to make it again. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
One other small but significant change I’d like to mention is the reintroduction of calculating swing in debates. For far too long we have only counted audience votes on the way out of debates. This term we’ll be implementing a system to measure what you think both before and after. Why is this important? Because it shows the ability of the people who speak here and the arguments they put across to change your mind on major issues. I think that’s something we should care about.
If you haven’t yet joined, make sure you do so before the end of the freshers’ discount on 17 October – or, if you want to come to our excellent Freshers’ Ball (and frankly why wouldn’t you, it’s free and there will be hog roast, sweets and alcohol, which is basically all of the food groups covered) then make sure you sign up and collect your membership card before 15 October.
The speaker list in this termcard is not complete. At the time of going to press, we’re still negotiating some incredibly exciting speakers who we hope to be able to announce soon.
I won’t list the entire contents of the termcard for you – you can read it for yourself. What I will say is that if you’re unsure about joining the Union, you don’t have to just yet: for the first two weeks of term, our Open Period means that you can attend any event for free. You can take a look at pages 13–23 to see what that entails.
Welcome to Cambridge, and welcome to the Union. I’m looking forward to meeting you. Tim Squirrell President, Michaelmas 2014

enhancing our access programmes, providing technical and professional services support and are currently working closely with us to open doors for the bicentenary celebrations this year which would otherwise have been closed to us. We hope to be able to announce details of these exciting developments in due course.
The Cambridge Union Society is delighted to be continuing its partnership with Deloitte, one of the world’s leading providers of professional services, this academic year. Over the past year the collaboration has allowed the Union to do things we could never have envisaged before it. Our new ‘CUS Live’ audio-visual system which will allow members to watch events at the Union from wherever they are in the world would not have been possible without their assistance. Equally, Deloitte have assisted with securing speakers for debates,
We are looking forward to working with them further in this fruitful collaboration to enhance the Union’s offering to members and its broader charitable objectives.

Debate Format the President will invite the speakers to leave and then direct members of the floor to vote. Members vote as they leave the chamber by walking through a particular door, as in Parliament. Those voting in favour of the motion exit through the door marked Ayes and those against through the door marked Noes. Unlike Parliament, members can also abstain by leaving through a third door.
The format used at the Cambridge Union is loosely based on the British Parliamentary style. Each team, consisting of three or four speakers, argues either for or against a set motion and are called the proposition and opposition respectively. The first proposition speaker starts each debate, and proposition and opposition speakers alternate throughout. Each speaker has eight minutes in which to present their case.
In a slight variation on previous terms, this term we will be attempting to calculate the swing in audience opinion from before to after the debate. Members will be given voting cards on the way in which will denote their ‘before’ vote.
Members on the floor are invited to give short speeches of their own after each pair of main speakers, again in proposition or opposition, but also in abstention. Members may also interrupt the main speeches, although only at the discretion of the speaker, to ask a question or give a brief point of information. To do so, they should stand and announce “on that point” or “point of information”. At the end of the debate,
The results of the vote are announced in the members’ bar around fifteen minutes after the end of the debate.
ME FROM THE A WELCO
Diversity & Women’s Officers Welcome to the Cambridge Union Society! As the Women’s and Diversity Officers, we want to give you a warm welcome to the home of free speech and debate in Cambridge.
From Women’s Public Speaking Workshops, to a forum on gender, there’s something for everyone. If you’d like to get involved with any of our events or work, have any questions or concerns about diversity at the Union, or if you just want to procrastinate – please us an email at women@cus.org or diversity@cus.org.
Our core value is the importance of free speech, and that’s free speech for everyone. We work to ensure that the Union is an inclusive and welcoming place for all, so this term we’ve put together a wide program of events to continue this work.

Debating Launch
The Cambridge Union is proud to run one of the most extensive and inclusive debating programmes in the UK. Debating teaches a fantastic range of skills that help you to think on your feet, persuade people and speak confidently. On Wednesday 8 October at 7:00 we are holding a launch event where we will explain more about how our debating programme works. Every Wednesday from 15 October onwards we will host workshops open to people of all levels of debating experience. This is a great way to learn from some of the world’s best speakers and have an opportunity to put this knowledge into practice. In addition we send teams to inter-varsity competitions most weeks. For the majority of these tournaments our aim is to develop newer speakers and allow anyone who is keen to give debating a go.
Women’s public Speaking Workshops Calling all female students! Ever wished you could be a more confident public speaker? Well, now is your chance to learn. On Tuesdays 7 October, 14 October and 21 October the Cambridge Union Society is holding a three-part Women’s Public Speaking Workshop run by Worlds finalist and John Smith Memorial Mace winner Kitty Parker Brooks, and Southampton IV and Kent IV winner and Euros breaking judge Ruby Holmes. So whether you’re a fresher, or you’ve wanted to get involved in public speaking at the Cambridge Union Society before but thought you had missed the boat, fear not! This is a great chance to get involved and to learn valuable lessons from two top debaters and public speakers. Tuesdays 7, 14, 21 October; 7.30

Chairman Mike Rogers Chairman Rogers is one of a handful of people at the forefront of US national security. As Chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence he oversees the House’s primary panel for authorising the funding for and overseeing the execution of the intelligence activities of the United States government. He has been extremely critical of Obama’s foreign policy, describing it as being “in absolute freefall”, and attacking the administration for failing to show international leadership. At a time of great international instability, particularly across Ukraine and the Middle East, the role of intelligence institutions is paramount and there are few people with the experience and authority of Chairman Rogers to offer insights into the challenges facing both the US and the world today. He has also been instrumental in the development of NSA’s data collection activities. Wednesday 22 October, 5.30

Natalie Bennett Cambridge University Women in Leadership Society (CUWL) is proud to host the Women in Leadership series in partnership with the Cambridge Union Society starting with Natalie Bennett. The society organises events and skills workshops to give members the contacts, knowledge and inspiration to pave the way for them to be future leader. After winning 8% of the UK vote in May’s European elections, and a third MEP, Leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, hopes to tap into voter disaffection in next year’s general election by offering a radical alternative, including higher income tax for the richest and renationalising the railways. A combination of redistributive policies with the Greens’ more traditional focus on issues of clean energy places them on the far left of the British political system.

Why should I get involved?
Universities across the United Kingdom host debating competitions on a weekly basis. We do not simply send our best speakers, but select from a wide range of abilities in order to give as many members as possible the chance to debate. Last year, we sent over 60 speakers to competitions, and next year we hope to send even more. These competitions provide a brilliant opportunity to socialise with students whilst visiting other parts of the country. We cover the registration fees and most of your travel costs; you only need to show up, ready to debate! We also offer
Debating for The Cambridge Union Society equips participants with an incredible set of skills which are extremely useful in a variety of contexts beyond the traditional British Parliamentary format of debating we use. There are lots of ways to get involved and we run many different programmes, so you’re sure to find something that will suit your interests.

Cambridge debaters also serve as judges for Cambridge Schools, the largest debating competition in the world, which saw over 1,200 participants last year. We offer schoolchildren from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to learn more about Cambridge and University-level debating. In Michaelmas Term, we run workshops for Union members on how to judge debates.

PRESIDEN T ’S
Thanks To my team – Christof, you are an absolute powerhouse, this term just would not have happened without you. Seriously, your dedication and sheer drive is as terrifying as it is productive. Freddie, you’ve managed to juggle the Union and academia like a pro. Eloise, your relentlessly positive outlook has made summer that much easier, and latterly you’ve put up with my Taylor Swift obsession. Ollie, you’ve managed to meet and exceed expectations on sponsorship. Nick, I’ve never met someone quite so efficient and professional. Thank you all.
would be completely ignored if the place were just left to a bunch of self–obsessed, narcissistic students. The Union would (probably literally) fall down without you. Thanks to the Trustees for your brilliant yet (mostly) thankless dedication to the Union and its aims; it’s always a comfort to know you have our backs. To all of my friends who’ve put up with ceaseless invitations to Union events on Facebook, countless events I’ve had to sack off to be here, and my general absenteeism and stress for nearly two years – thank you, you know who you are. I’ll try and be a better friend after December.
To the Lent team – Amy, Oliver, James, Róisín, Sachin – good luck. You’ll be in charge of the most prestigious term in recent memory, and I have every faith that you won’t screw it up. Sachin, you get a second mention – you and Ted together have made this year’s recruitment period likely to be one of the most successful ever, and I’m fairly sure you could sell contraceptives to nuns if you really put your mind to it.
Chloe, you’ve got me through one of the hardest periods in my life and somehow kept me comparatively sane over the long, rubbish summer. You’re in the background, calling the shots, and you’re brilliant. Mum and Dad, you are a constant source of support and love – I hope I’ve made you proud.
To the Union’s brilliant staff – Bill, Joe, Paddy, Dave, Bart, Kelly (and Charlene!) – thank you for doing the hard work that
Thank you all for being so wonderful and forgiving. Any errors and character flaws which remain are most assuredly my own.
