President's Thanks I want to use this section to capture a side of the term card which often goes unnoticed.

Rachel, Alycia, Luke, Max, Sahil and Daniel. I wish you the best of luck for next term and really look forward to it. It’ll be amazing working with you all this term!

The amazing events in the pages to follow come down to a single factor- a remarkable team that worked incredibly hard. Through this, I hope to capture my gratitude to them.

Thank you to Mo, Gabriel and Hattie for showing me the ropes at the Union, I found the experience crucial for working on this term card.

Whether it’s your constant support over the year I’ve been involved with the Union, or your scary ability to correctly guess any corporate speaker’s email, Imran you have truly earned yourself appointed title of ‘DSO’. Haneen, your sheer perseverance and ability to do everything have been an absolute lifesaver for me and this term card. By the way, thanks also for that Sprite! Adam, from your target breaking invites, to your constantly evolving (now perfect) template, to your hilarious pedanticism, you’ve earned the assurances of my highest consideration. Thank you, Jamie for putting up with my constant Facebook nagging and managing to balance the budget for all our crazy ideas. I hope you carry on your eternal love for bubble tea! Emma, thank you for being the best hype man the Union ever had…and the second best Ents officer. But jokes aside, I’m so excited to see the results of all the tons of creativity and effort you’ve put in. We love collaborations by the way!

A huge thank you to my biggest Union fans, Charles and Jali. Without either of you, I wouldn’t be involved with the society in the first place. Whether it’s Union advice or friendly motivation, you guys have been beyond amazing. Thank you to Adam, Owen, Maria, Jonas and Sam. All of you contributed so much to giving me a positive perception of the Union and for letting me work with you on the many things I had a chance to do here. Bill, Joe, Katherine, Louise, Sabine, Nathan, Bart, Sam and Leo. Thank you for making the Union the place it is and helping materialise the things we tried to do as a committee. We’d be very lost, literally in some cases, without you. Lastly, thank you to some of my friends outside the Union. Clare, Joe, Bex, Raphael, Saljuk and Ali. You’ve all not only put up with my Union talk but helped me in so so many ways. I’m very lucky to have you all.

Maha, I still can’t believe the insane number of vacation committee invites you sent and thank you above all for your persistence with our ‘in conversation’ event! Nia and Sarah, your new initiative is exactly what the Union needs and just one of the many wonderful things you’ve given this term. Eileen, you really took a new take on your role and the amazing events you’ve helped organise prove that. I’m looking forward to your characteristic enthusiasm through the coming term! A special thank you to some of my friends who have been beyond instrumental in my time at the Union and have taken their different paths now. Joy for always being my president and Vincent for joining in for one last exciting term. Nikki and Alex for helping this term in so many ways and now helping deliver it.

Above all, thank you to the members for taking a chance on me. I hope all of you enjoy Easter 2019 and find it worthwhile to have taken that chance. Abdullah Shah President, Easter 2019

The membership gets you discounts on pretty much anything, including food, soft drinks, beer and our delicious cocktails and exclusive member deals available. Redevelopment! Finally, after many years of careful planning and gathering funds, The Cambridge Union has started its multi-million renovation that is estimated to finish in early 2020. What does it mean exactly for 1815 The Union Bar? Over the summer, the bar will be serving straight into the garden by utilizing the room’s windows next to which we will put our new service area. You can expect the same amount of lively music events, now in the previously closed to the public main Debating Chamber. Even though the available space will visibly decrease when compared to the old bar, we will make sure it’s even more cosy, authentic, and focused. Our team is relatively small, but with big hearts and always willing to help, so you can chat to us anytime. The best way to stay updated is to follow us on Facebook and Instagram @1815Bar. Men’s Mental Health Why Are Young Men Struggling and What Can Be Done About It?

With suicide being the leading cause of death for young men, it is fundamental to have a discussion about mental health among men and what can be done about it. Described as a ’silent crisis’, men often find it difficult to speak openly about their emotions and are much less likely than women to act upon what may be symptoms of a mental health problem. The MeToo movement has raised interesting questions about toxic masculinity, and it is therefore important to reflect on societal gender norms more generally and how they may contribute to a lack of openness among men. In collaboration with Student Minds, this panel will seek to explore the pressures facing young men and what we can all do about them. Speakers: Nicholas Pinnock, British actor, writer and poet. Meet the Speakers Would you like the opportunity to meet one of the Union’s speakers this term? We want to give members greater access to meet the speakers than ever before. If you’ve been their biggest fan for as long as you can remember or wrote your dissertation on their works, let us know. It won’t be possible for every speaker, but we will try and arrange meetings where possible. Look out for the online form in your weekly emails and on the event’s Facebook page.

On a Debate Night If you haven’t been to one of our Thursday night debates, Easter is the perfect opportunity to come and see the spectacle, contribute to the discussion, and make the most of your Union membership. The format used at the Cambridge Union is loosely based on the British Parlimentary style. Each team, consisting of three or four speakers, argues either for or against a set motion and are called the proposition and opposition respectively. The first proposition speaker starts each debate and proposition and opposition speakers alternate throughout. Each speaker has eight minutes in which to present their case. Members on the floor are invited to give short speeches of their own after each pair of main speakers, again in proposition or opposition, but also in abstention. Members may also interrupt main speeches, although only at the discretion of the speaker; to ask a question or give a brief point of information. To do so, they should stand and announce ‘on that point’ or ‘point of information’. At the end of the debate, the President will invite the speakers to leave and then direct members to the floor to vote. Members vote as they leave the chamber by walking through particular doors, as in Parliment. Those voting in favour of the motion exit through the door marked Ayes and those against through the door marked Noes. Unlike Parliment, members can also abstain by leaving through a third door. The swing in audience opinion is calculated from before to after the debate. Members will be given voting cards on the way in which they will denote their initial thoughts on the motion. The results of the vote are announced in the 1815 Bar around 15 minutes after the end of the debate.

Getting Involved Stewarding One of the best ways to get involved with the Union is stewarding our events. Stewards wear a fetching neon jacket, get the best seats in the house, a £5 bar tab and a free grilled sandwich per event stewarded. So what are you waiting for? Join ‘Cambridge Union Society Stewards’ on Facebook or reach out to hoem@cus.org for more details. Suggest a Speaker The easiest way to suggest a speaker is to fill in the form that goes directly to the team at: cus.org/termcard/speaker-suggestions Running for Election Each term elections are held for the position of President, Executive Officer, Speakers Officer, Treasurer and Social Events Officer. To run for election, one must satisfy a few criteria that can be found in the Union’s constitution on our website. Most of these involve supporing the Union’s competitive debating programme in a varity of ways. Running for President requires that one has previously been head of a department at the Union. Being Appointed At the end of each term, the incoming team of officers interviews people for a variety of positions on Full Committee, all of which are advertises via email, and on the Union’s Facebook page. There are roles for anyone and everyone, regardless of experience, so do keep an eye out for the end of Easter when the Michaelmas team will start recruiting! Union experience is helpful but not required to apply for these roles. join ‘Cambridge Debating’ on Facebook.

Information

Debating The Union will continue to run Debating Workshops on a Wednesday from 7.15pm in the Chamber for the first four weeks of term. They will be taught by Cambridge's senior debaters and by guests amounting to the best British speakers of the last decade. Most of these workshops will link closely with the weekly main debate topic. These main debates will be moulded into the sorts of things that you can expect to find debated competitively around the country, so if you want a practice for the floor speech that you're dying to give on the Thursday, come to debate workshops on the Wednesday! We will also continue to have socials each week after workshops, culminating in our famous May Week Debates' Garden Party, so if you're looking to get involved more socially than competitively, Easter term debating is the one for you. Furthermore, in the run up to the summer, and into the vacation, we will be sending teams to high quality debating tournaments all over Europe. The Union is very generous with funding, so if you want to get involved with debating, and want to travel, then Easter really is the ideal time to start learning from some of the best debaters in the world, and also seeing why debating is such a fun activity. Alongside these opportunities, we will also be opening applications for convenors for the four debating competitions that Cambridge will be hosting in the coming academic year, two of which (Cambridge Schools and the International Competition for Young Debaters) are probably the largest Secondary level debating competitions in the world. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the Union, and make in some cases, a genuinely life changing impact on children all over the world, as you facilitate their voices being heard, and the development of their analytical skills. Roles range from being responsible for the smooth running of the whole competition, to smaller ones that oversee finance and logistics. It's a great way to build a CV, and to begin to get involved in the Union. Moreover, getting involved in this way is an excellent way to gain the sort of 'contribution points' that will give you amazing opportunities in the next academic year. Cambridge will once again be sending debaters on tour to both India and America, along with the Thailand and Greece for the World and European Championships. Not only are these trips some of the most fun you can have by getting involved in the Union, but especially for the tours you really don't have to be a world-champion to get involved, you just have to want to learn, speaker, and contribute to the world's oldest debating society. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesdays! If you want more information about debating email: debating@cus.org for more details and join 'Cambridge Debating' on Facebook. 64

Information

Outreach With education at the heart of the Union’s mission, we hope to get as many young people, particularly from state schools involved in debating and public speaking as possible. Children who have participated in Union workshops and competitions in the past have cited such experiences as the main reason they gained enough confidence to apply to university. In Easter Term we therefore plan to run a series of debating and public workshops for state school students aged 11-15. Members are invited to assist in the running and leading of these workshops which will involve following a lesson plan and judging practice debates. Members will also have the chance to contact their schools and establish new links with the Union by running workshops and inviting them to Chamber events. No prior experience in debating or mentoring is required. Contact access@cus.org if you are interested in supporting this exciting initiative or have any queries.
