The publication accompanies an exhibition that presents over 80 works of art by 35 artists. Beginning with Pop Art in the 1960’s, the exhibition explores the influence of cartoons and comics in contemporary art over three generations of contemporary art activity. The project traces the use of iconography and techniques borrowed from the comics and used by artists to point out and advance their own political, social, racial and cultural agendas. Artists whose work is included in the exhibition are: Laylah Ali, Michael Ray Charles, Roy Lichtenstein, Takashi Murakami, Elizabeth Murray, Sigmar Polke, Peter Saul, Kenny Scharf, Andy Warhol, and many others. Includes essays by Valerie Cassel, Roger Sabin, and Bernard Welt; a comics timeline by Jamie Colville; and documentation on the artists’ careers.
